Valentines from the Head and Heart By Dr. Lori Verderame Valentine’s Day falls on February 14th, and along with the Roman Goddess of Marriage Juno, the holiday honors the Christian martyr St. Valentine. Persecuted by the Roman Emperor in 273 AD, St. Valentine enjoys a legacy that has been carried on by lovers, young and old, for centuries. St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated by gifting flowers, sharing love symbols and sending romantic cards. While St. Valentine presented the flowers from his garden to young lovers in an effort to promote the Catholic sacrament of matrimony during his lifetime, the February holiday that bears his name has sparked the exchange of various artisan works. During the Victorian Era of the late 19th century, Valentine traditions existed that prompted loved ones to share homemade baked goods and handcrafted keepsakes. Since the way to someone’s heart is really via the stomach, Victorians on Valentine’s Day showed

loved by giving items that were useful in the kitchen. The Victorians said “I love you” with gifts of decorative ceramic rolling pins, pie plates, and hand painted, decorated china. From Heart to Hair. Although the Valentine card remains the most recognizable of the lover’s offerings, Victorian gifts from the heart—and the head—were the most desirable. One such gift was an item that would assist in making handicrafts: the hair receiver. Victorian women saved their hair in a small ceramic bowl with a hole in its top called a hair receiver. Today, antique hair receivers range in value from $15 to $500 for specialty examples. In the Victorian Era, a hair receiver was a common dresser accessory. After accumulating a good amount of locks, the hair would be used to make a hair object. These receivers would be used to save brushed hair for weaving hair pictures, hair bracelets, hair lockets, hair chains, hair watch fobs, etc. Today, the popular hair crafts made from all of this saved hair are hard to find. Blonde or Brunette? One of the most beloved Valentine antiques is the coveted hair picture. Hair pictures were devotional objects coveted by families for generations. Accompanied by a handwritten inscription, hair pictures are fascinating mementos. Some of the most common Victorian Valentines featured the symbolic lover’s rose or a bouquet of forget-me-not flowers to remember the dead, made from the hair locks of one’s beloved. With values in the $1,000 to $5,000 range, framed Victorian hair pictures grew from loving pictures to fine memorials. This Month in Sports Collecting History By Mike McLeod and Marla McLeod February 1, 1968: The legendary Vince Lombardi resigned from coaching the Green Bay Packers. In 2014, a gameworn West Point sweater belonging to Vince Lombardi was purchased for 58 cents at a Goodwill in North Carolina (packersnews.com, 2/21/15). The following year, it scored with $43,020 at Heritage Auctions. The sweater was donated to Goodwill by Vince Lombardi’s widow. Lombardi coached the West Point team before moving to the NFL. At Green Bay as head coach, his record was 105-35-6 (regular and post season). The Packers won Super Bowls I and II and five NFL championships under his leadership (packers. com, “Vince Lombardi”).

February 22, 2014: A 1923 New York Yankees World Championship watch presented to Babe Ruth gaveled for $717,000 at Heritage Auctions. Later, the Babe gave it to his friend Charlie Schwefel. Schwefel’s wife eventually passed it to their nephew Lewis Fern who had caddied for the Babe. In the auction description, Heritage reported the two were on a golf course and saw the Hindenburg pass over before it exploded while docking. A fourteen-karat gold Gruen Verithin watch, the back is engraved with a scene of a pitcher throwing a ball to a batter and, “BABE RUTH,” “YANKEES,” and “WORLD’S CHAMPIONS 1923.” Inside the cover is engraved, “PRESENTED BY BASEBALL COMMISSION TO GEORGE H. RUTH”. Babe added: “TO MY PAL, CHARLIE SCHWEFEL.”

In the 1980 Olympics, the US team of amateurs faced the Russian professionals. Mike Eruzione scored the game-winning goal in the miracle win of 4-3. The USA went on to defeat Finland to take the gold; the Russians took silver. Yes, the government actually experimented with making glass pennies to save copper during WWII. The only known intact and surviving example made in 1942 hit $70,500 in a public auction conducted in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and online by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions on Friday, January 6, 2017. The glass penny was estimated at $30,000. Made of tempered, yellowamber transparent glass by the Blue Ridge Glass Company of Kingsport, Tenn., the example offered was the only surviving example of two known to exist. The other one is broken in half—hence, the reason the experiment was a bad idea from the beginning.

Oscar Schindler was no saint—a heavy drinker, womanizer, war profiteer, and Nazi party member and spy. But it was these qualities that enabled him to save the lives of more than 1,200 Jews.1 His bribery of the Nazis and the SS, his binge drinking with them and giving them gifts, was how he kept his factories operating with Jewish laborers and kept them the workers from the death camps. When the Russian army began advancing toward his factory, Schindler used bribery and favors to get the whole operation moved to a safer location—and move the workers with him. This monumental feat accomplished with Nazi approval was beyond comprehension in those days of the iron hand of the SS. This literally saved the lives of his Jewish workers again; they would have all gone to death camps if left behind. True, Schindler became rich at the beginning with his war profiteering, but all of his money was spent protecting and providing for the Schindler Jews, as they called themselves. He was a pauper after the war and hated by his own people for helping Jews. Some say he used the Jews as slave labor, but he provided

them with more food than others received in the death camps and with good medical treatment as well. More importantly, he kept them alive and out of the gas chambers. Schindler’s factories and the sub-concentration camps that he set up by the factories kept families together (which never happened in other concentration camps), and he even slept every night at one factory in case the SS showed up. Louis Bülow has researched the Holocaust, the death camps and Oscar Schindler for many years and has created several websites publishing this information.2 On oskarschindler.com he writes: “When asked [why he did this], Schindler told that his metamorphosis during the war was sparked by the shocking immensity of the Final Solution. In his own words: ‘I hated the brutality, the sadism, and the insanity of Nazism. I just couldn’t stand by and see people destroyed. I did what I could, what I had to do, what my conscience told me I must do. That’s all there is to it. Really, nothing more.’” Schindler was not Jewish; he was of the Catholic religion. Doing the impossible during that time of insanity was Schindler’s talent. “Abraham Zuckerman recalled how Oscar Schindler got 300 Schindler-women released from the death camp Auschwitz during World War 2, the only shipment out of Auschwitz, where the Nazis murdered 2-3 million people. ‘What people don’t understand about Oscar is the power of the man, his strength, his determination. Everything he did, he did to save the Jews. Can you imagine what power it took for him to pull out from Auschwitz 300 people? At Auschwitz, there was only one way you got out, we used to say. This Martin Borenstein Challenge Series couch sold at auction for $5,500 in 2015. It’s February—the month of love—so, what better time to examine the intense love affair the public is having with MidCentury Modern furniture and art? True love or an infatuation? Either way, this obsession is driving auction prices up as bidders fight over couches, chairs, dining room tables, end tables, hutches, dressers, light fixtures, ottomans, paintings and more from the mid-20th century. Some say mid-modern architecture and design dates back to the early 1930s. Others say it started it 1940. Most agree the era ended in the late-1960s. At our auction house, in Scottsdale, Arizona, the pieces that I see do the best are from the 1950s and 1960s. They are classic, simple designs

Rather than ornamental pieces, the furniture from this era featured smooth, polished surfaces and was created with teak, oak, rosewood, beech, elm and walnut. Lucite, plastic and glass were also used to create minimalistic designs. TV shows like Mad Men helped increase the cool factor of mid-modern designs, and now you’ll find reproductions at big retail stores like West Elm, IKEA, Target and others. But serious collectors will search antique stores, estate sales and auction houses to find original pieces created by renowned designers like Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Ray Eames, Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, Milo Baughman, Harvey Probber,

The father of prairie-style architecture, Wright believed form was function, and his bold, architectural furnishings were designed to complement his prairie exteriors. In 1955 and 1956, he licensed Henredon to manufacture his designs. The firm’s sister company was Heritage,

and in total, I believe Heritage Henredon manufactured approximately 75 of Wright’s designs. The end table, simple in design, might not catch the eye of the average person, but because Wright had designed it, the piece did well, realizing $2,750. The same auction featured three other Frank Lloyd Wright pieces, all from the same consignor. and a slate top. One of the legs was marked as a Frank Lloyd Wright piece, and it, too, came with a copy of a Christie’s East 1991 letter. The pre-sale estimate back then was $1,000 to $1,500. A Heritage Henredon Frank Lloyd Wright sofa went to the highest bidder for $2,750. A Christie’s East letter from 1991 estimated its pre-sale value to be between $1,200 and $1,800. Another Heritage Henredon Frank Lloyd Wright coffee table didn’t do as well as we expected, realizing just $1,000. I attribute this to the condition of the piece. It was a long rectangular table with a Frank Lloyd Wright mark on a leg and a similar Greek Key pattern to the other pieces. A copy of the Christie’s East 1991 letter showed its pre-sale estimate to be between $2,000 and $3,000. Martin Borenstein is another mid-century architect who designed sleek furniture that appeals to current minimalistic tastes. Not much is written about him, though I did read that he lost his home in the 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm, just two days after remodeling it. Two years later, he rebuilt a contemporary home featuring large glass windows, and he used tall potted plants inside to separate rooms instead of walls. We’ve sold several Martin Borenstein pieces, and I think his style of furniture will continue to do well in 2017. I’ve included a photo of a Martin Borenstein Challenge Series couch that sold in our July 2015 auction for $5,500. Collectors also can’t get enough of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne. The New York-based father-and-son team created

Edgar Degas, the famous painter, was also a sculptor. The masterpiece featured here is his Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans (Little Dancer of Fourteen Years). Originally created in wax and standing about three feet high, more than two dozen bronzes were created from the original after Degas’ passing on September 27, 1917. One of those sold in 2015 for almost $25 million at Sotheby’s. This seemingly unassuming, straightforward sculpture created a firestorm when it was first exhibited in Paris in 1881. The critiques were across the spectrum. The harshest of which labeled the Little Dancer—the sculpture and the young model—as vulgar. Today, realistic sculpture is accepted and appreciated. Realism in art, which began in 1840, was still not widely accepted at the time of Degas in the latter 1800s. Why? The Art Story explains on its website: “Realist painters replaced the idealistic images and literary conceits of traditional art with real-life events, giving the margins of society similar weight to grand history paintings and allegories.”1 For many at that time, Degas’ sculpture was just too real. Degas shocked the art society not only by realistically portraying a young ballet dancer in training, but also by dressing the sculpture in real clothes. He placed a tutu, a bodice and even a wig on the work and then covered those pieces with wax. The use of wax as a medium for the sculpture itself was also radical and shocking for that time. Fine art was

supposed to be lofty in its subject matter. However, Degas chose to bring it down to earth. Young girls in training to be ballet dancers were referred to as “rats,” or “petite rats,” perhaps because many came from the working classes, the gutter-side of society, with hopes of clawing their way up to become famous and rich ballerinas. The ballet schools that trained them could be likened to the old school Marine Corps’ boot camp—extremely rigorous in discipline, strenuous exercises, insulting belittlement, and living with pain. Training to be a ballerina was not a tea party. At that time, ballet dancers were rock stars. Critiques of their performances and the trials of their profession were often published in newspapers and avidly followed by Parisian society, just as baseball, football and basketball players are scrutinized in today’s media.2 Degas chose young Marie Van Goethem as the model for his sculpture. Byron’s Muse Blog writes of her: “Certain critics compared the dancer to a monkey and to Aztecs. One critic, Paul Mantz, called her the ‘flower of precocious depravity,’ with a face

‘marked by the hateful promise of every vice’ and ‘bearing the signs of a profoundly heinous character.’ Degas had exhibited the sculpture inside a glass case, and the audience reported that it looked like a medical specimen.”3 Mantz also wrote that the sculpture “…is nearly terrifying….”4 To be fair, some critics were enthralled with his work, as are most collectors of art today. However, one must wonder how the negative reaction affected him; this was the only sculpture Degas ever exhibited in public during his lifetime.5 Edgar Degas was born in Paris on July 19, 1834. The subjects of more than half of his artwork were ballerinas and dancers. Degas never married, unless you count be married to his work as an artist. In addition to painting, sculpture and printmaking, he was also an early experimenter in photography. Unfortunately, Degas’ eyesight was poor, and toward

the end of his life, he was nearly blind—which could also be said of many of the critics of his Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans. $2,513 (22 bids, 8 bidders): 1910 Sector Watch—Retrograde Jumping Time Pocket Watch – running. A rare Art Nouveaudesign watch with retrograde jumping time indicator. The watch is very rare; in the Dr. Crott auction in May of this year (sale 93, lot 370), a similar watch was sold for 4,100 euros. The case is made of white metal. It’s in good condition; all hinges are good. Enamel dial has several minor repairs, most notable of the left edge and several hardly visible hairlines. Triangle-shaped movement is in good running condition; all functions as it should. It’s marked, “Record Watch Tramerlan” and “Brevet 27961”. Acrylic crystal. This type of watch is based on Swiss patent no. 27.961 which Giovanni Sgherlino of Turin received on April 9, 1903. A group of watchmakers and dealers from Tramelan and Tavannes took an interest in the unusual design and registered the “Record Watch Co. SA.” on December 16, 1903. DBA: A retrograde watch is any of the type that is not circular, so the indicator hand will “jump” from 12 to 0. There are several factors that make this a good deal for the buyer: the watch is running, the watch is in the Art Deco style, and the watch has an unusual (i.e., retrograde) function. That all adds value to this watch. The combination of all these traits adds significantly to the value. I would think that the rarity of this watch would make it hold value through the years. $406 (25 bids, 16 bidders): 19th C. Antique Wang Hing Chinese Export Silver Sedan Chair Condiment Set. This auction is for the second of two 19th century Chinese export silver condiment sets. Hallmarked by the 19th century Chinese silversmith Wang Hing, this figural set is finely handcrafted. You can find many examples of Wang Hing silver on the net, and he has been connected to Tiffany & Co., which sold examples of silver in their stores during the Victorian Period. It was common for 19th century Victorian families to have figural condiment sets with wheels. You can just roll this 8.75-inch long by 3.75-inch wide by 4-inch tall “Sedan Chair” across the table. Each of the figures measure just over 3 inches tall and are finely detailed. The three containers are removable, plus the open bucket is gold-lined and has a glass inset. There is another open compartment below the bucket, and in the back is a box with a lid. This set comes with only one original spoon. All of this fine, handmade set needs a polishing. There are no problems or any restorations. If you search for antique Wang Hing Silver online, you can find many tea sets and other fine crafted items. You will not find another example like this

The seal is chip-free. There are some scratches (it was a working float) and a bubble pop that I have tried to show in pictures. There are some impact chips, but this float is structurally sound and weighs almost a pound. It is large. Bigger than a softball, and not something I could securely hold in my hand. DBA: It is hard to say who got the best of this deal. The price paid is very low, but the main issue is the condition. Will this object look better after a good polish? Or is the finish essentially gone? If this object polishes up nicely, the buyer got an incredible deal. Wang Hing is a made-up name for the most prolific silver maker of the company’s generation. For such a prolific silver maker, the attention to detail was not lost, and this company’s products are sought after. Most of these objects sell for far more than this object. However, I have not seen one in this condition. Hopefully for the buyer, it is just tarnish! $1,740 (46 bids, 14 bidders): Janson Import European Glass Fishing Float. Very little is known about this extremely hard to find Janson Import float. Our Norwegian friend says that it isn’t Norwegian because Janson is not spelled that way in Norway. We do not know where it came from originally, and we do not know who made it (other than Janson!). Apparently, no one does. I believe this is the first and only time the Janson Import float has been offered on eBay. It is extremely rare.

DBA: Glass fishing floats originated in Norway, but many fishermen in different parts of the world used them to keep their fishing lines or droplines afloat. Large groups of fishnets strung together would be supported by these hollow glass balls containing air to keep them afloat. These glass floats are no longer used, but still can be found. I have not been able to find “Janson Glass,” “Janson Import,” etc. in any database. There is no glass maker showing up with this name that could be found. The earliest of these objects were blown pieces; this one is a molded piece. This is so rare that nothing can be found about the name Janson associated with this or any other product marked in such a way. However, there are many similar glass fishing globes selling on eBay. There are also many replica types selling for about $100, and it may be difficult to differentiate the replica from the original.

The Love Affair Continues with Mid-Century Modern Continued from Center Gloss artistic tables and cabinets that were distinctive in style and easily recognizable. In our April 2014 auction, we sold a Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Eternal Forest round table for $9,500. This rare piece from the mid-1970s was acid-etched and patinated bronze over pewter and wood with a molded signature on top. Measuring approximately 17.5 inches tall by 41.75 inches in diameter, it was in excellent condition with the original green felt on the bottom of the base. Even mid-century styles without big names attached to them do fairly well at auction. In our July 2016 auction, we sold a black leather settee for $1,100, several hundred dollars more than our estimate of $500 to $700. Similar to a loveseat, settees were designed as wide chairs. They’re retrocool, cozy and make for a great accent piece. Several artists from the mid-century are also selling well. I frequently see bidding frenzies over original pieces by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Harry Bertoia, Jackson Pollock, Jeff Koons, Frida Kahlo and many others. Even the reproductions are doing well. We’ve auctioned many mid-modern pieces of art, but two that stand out in my mind are a Harry Bertoia multi-plane construction sculptural piece that sold for $110,000 in our 2016 New Year’s Day auction and a Guillermo Wiedemann oil painting that sold for $30,000 in our July 2014 auction. As with any collectible, do your research and examine the condition before purchasing mid-century modern furniture or art. Because the style is so popular right now, the market is being flooded with reproductions, or inspirations, if you will. A few things to watch out for are makers’ marks, labels and even signatures. They are generally easy to find, but many pieces are not marked. A Google image search can be quite helpful. I’d like to think that America’s love affair with MidCentury Modern furniture and art will be long-lasting. Right now, from what I see, there are no signs of a cyclical change. So, if your heart flutters at the sight of a sofa, end table or other piece that will enhance your home’s décor, treat yourself this Valentine’s Day to a special gift. ---Josh Levine owns J. My father passed away two years ago, and I found this in a box in my closet when I was moving. It is a large pewter grapevine candlestick holder with an inscription saying, “Presented to Major Kerr by the officers and men of No. 4 Company 14th Battalion Volunteer Rifles as a mark of the high respect and esteem in which he was held by them while the company was under his command, Kingston March 1866.” Any idea if this is worth anything? JS: When I first viewed your photos, the quality and gilt details appeared as sterling, but your photos do prove it is pewter. This unit is a most interesting militia unit, first known as the “Princess of Wales Own Regiment.” I am not sure who Major Kerr was, but that is understandable since lots of militia records are sparse in that era. The regiment was created on 16 January 1863 as the “14th Battalion Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada” from the amalgamation of Kingston, Ontario’s seven independent rifle companies. On March 18, 1866, the company was called out in response to possible attacks by “Fenians” from America. The Fenians were a secret society of Irish patriots who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. Their goal was to capture Canada and trade it back to Britain for Irish independence. From 1866 to 1871, the Fenians launched a series of small, armed incursions into Canada; each of which was put down by government forces, including actions of militias like this one here—at the cost of dozens killed and wounded on both sides. Many of the Fenians were Civil War veterans who were battle-hardened. Much has been published on this fringe group. The Canadians were well prepared for them so little action happened toward their goal. Your presentation candlesticks, in the opinion of wellrespected New England dealer Robert French of Portland, Me., are valued at $700-$1,000 in the U.S. and possible a premium in the Canadian or U.K. markets.

The Folk to Fine Arts Festival Returns, Showcasing Regional Art for Purchase, March 3-4 in Commerce, Ga. The sixth annual Folk-to-Fine Arts Festival brings remarkable one-of-a kind folk and fine artists to Historic Downtown Commerce, Ga., on March 3-4. The Commerce Civic Center & Tourism Authority (formerly the Commerce Cotton Exchange), located at 110 State Street in Commerce, will be the venue for this year’s festival, which continues to captivate visitors with over 70 fine and folk artists, offering various types and forms of folk and fine art. These include oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, sculpture, photography, pottery, jewelry, decorative fiber works, metal works, paper, stone and more. The festival opens at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 3rd, with a Meet the Artist Dessert Reception from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., where visitors can enjoy mingling with the artists, with pieces for sale, while enjoying complimentary drinks. Friday festival hours are 5-9 p.m. Admission is $15 and includes the Meet the Artist Reception. The festival is open 10-5 on Saturday, March 4th. Admission is $5 per person, with kids 10 and under free. During the festival, there will be an artist’s raffle from various works of art donated by the artists.
