“WHAT A LOT OF CODD’S WALLOP!”

Or how I became a collector of weird, eccentric and everyday gadgets and contraptions from the past By Maurice Collins

(All photos courtesy of the author)

Gun purse

Radio camera

It all started down a hole in the ground in a Victorian rubbish dump in North London. My son, aged 13, decided that he wanted to dig for old bottles and pot lids in a local dump. “Whatever for?” I queried. “My mates are doing it. They saw it on the telly.” This was back in the Seventies. A television programme had featured a group of teenagers helping to excavate a rubbish dump. For a very short time, it became a craze. Sounds a bit sad now, but remember, there were no computer games, smart phones or virtual reality back then. So, off we went to the dump. Here we were, down this dirty, damp trench in foul weather, and the only thing we could find on that first dig was a bottle with a pointed bottom that would not stand up. Yet, how intriguing: a bottle that was impossible to stand on its own two feet—what was the point? (No pun intended). My son didn’t see the point, either, but Dad was hooked. I became a gadget nut with an interest in patents, inventions and weird contraptions. Most of my collection has come from antique fairs, dealers and by personal recommendation, but if you can get access to very old rubbish tips (garbage dumps), and make sure you are working safely, you never know what you might find. I love researching gadgets. My first mystery was why the Victorians bothered manufacturing bottles that quite deliberately fell over. Joseph Priestley, the 18th century English scientist, was best known for his discovery of oxygen; yet, he always said that his happiest discovery was his invention of soda water. He found a way to carbonate water. Every bubbly, fizzy drink since then owes a debt to

Joseph Priestley who ended his years living in Pennsylvania. Everyone wanted sparkling mineral water. The problem was how to keep the fizz in and prevent the drink from going flat. In 1814, a man named William Hamilton came up with an ingenious solution. He reasoned that if the cork in the neck of the bottle was always kept damp, the gas could be kept in the bottle. To do this, Hamilton devised the pointed-bottom bottle. As it was always on its side, the liquid was always in contact with the cork. It was a huge success. In fact, it continued for nearly 100 years, even when competition from the more famous mineral water container called the Codd’s bottle came along in the 1880s. This was invented by Hiram Codd and was a normal bottle with a kink in the neck that held a marble. The pressure of the gas in the bottle pushed up on the marble, thus sealing it. The idea of it being just a lot of gas gave rise to the expression, “What a lot of codd’s wallop.” A wallop is English slang for a drink, and the saying means talking a lot of gas. Victorian kids had a great time breaking the Codd’s bottles to get at the marbles; I had a lot of fun finding out how they worked. Just a little research had opened for me an amazing insight into how people over a period of 100 years had used technology in their everyday lives, and I resolved to try to collect the minutiae of everyday life. In the end, my collection runs to more than 2,000 gadgets. A wide range of these are now represented in a book on my

Penknife gun collection, Bizarre and Outlandish Gadgets and Doohickeys. When I started to collect these contraptions, I realised the enormity of the task. After all, stores had been selling these products in their tens of thousands so I needed to set some parameters to the collection. Being based in London, I decided to make my period 1851–1951 (from the Great Industrial Exhibition to the Festival of Britain). I also went for as many mechanical gadgets as possible, and especially as time went on, I became more and more interested in patents and gadgets that were beautiful or ingenious or both, yet which never quite made it. Just collecting for its own sake has never been my motivation. Right from the start, I wanted to know the social background. How was this particular invention meant to improve people’s lot? Did it reduce manual labour? Was this the result of higher labour costs, or did the new technology lead to unemployment and higher rates of poverty? Why did it succeed, or why did it fail? Also of interest are the missing links, the steps on the way to the machines of today. Take the washing machine. For centuries, women—nearly always women—had scrubbed clothes clean with stones by a river or used a tub and a dollystick (a stick for moving laundry from a tub of boiling water to a tub of rinse water). The first mechanical washing machine replicates many of these actions. It is, however, identifiably the precursor of today’s washing machines, though made of wood. It was still labour-intensive: you need strong arms to turn the handle fast enough for the clothes to be pummelled by the wooden ridges inside the barrel. However, it was a step away from drudgery and hard physical labour. What should you buy? Sometimes, monetary gain is very far from your head. I could not pass up the chance to own a “Teasmaid” powered by clockwork. It was simply too delightful, and the mechanics of it are nearly perfect: you set the time on the alarm clock, when the bell rings, a series of levers causes a match to strike, which then

The Shops of

lights an oil burner. When the kettle boils, a steel plate swivels and puts out the flames, and the water is poured automatically from the kettle into the teapot alongside the machine. It is, in truth, a fire hazard, but it is also a beauty. Little by little, my collection grew. I am now wellknown amongst specialist antique dealers, and they approach me, so I tend not to spend hours trawling websites for gadgets. I built up my early collection through hours of attending antique fairs, popping in to second-hand shops, and poking about in antique shops. Today, you may well have to spend that time on websites, but I would still strongly recommend going out and attending shops and fairs. Apart from anything, they are great places to meet people. My latest book has been divided into specific sections, each dealing with a different area of gadgetry. Few areas are untouched in my collection. There is the self-illuminated clock, candle-powered, in the Time and Money section, and the portable cheque writer, patented in the USA, which embossed the amount over the writing to prevent fraud. The Quackery section illustrates some of the most amazing scams committed by the charlatans of the 1800s: the electric chain belt, which was said to cure everything from cancer to lack of potency, and another that changed the shape of your nose—looks like pure torture! An essential element of the collection is new-fangled inventions, items like the radio camera from the 1930s and the ladies’ detective camera in a make-up box—honey traps to blackmail politicians or businessmen are nothing new! The Ladies section is one of my favourites, reflecting the Victorian period in fashion with for example, skirt grapplers, which allowed the ladies of the day to go upstairs without tripping and to keep their skirts out of the mud in the streets. Wars threw up a whole raft of interesting gadgets:

escape items in WWII, such as uniform buttons that undo to reveal a compass and the roller skates issued to Britain’s Home Guard to fight the German Panzer Divisions if they ever landed on England’s shores. Defending oneself in the heyday of the gangster was solved by having in your pocket a penknife that was also a revolver, called “the Defender,” a well-engineered little weapon that presumably did the job to dissuade the local hood. The Ladies section brings a Victorian edge to the idea of discreet defence. One of the most extraordinary items in the collection is a velvet lady’s purse that has concealed in the back of it a tiny pistol—it would certainly scare the footpad (highwayman); one just hopes it rarely had to be used. So, why not build your own collection of these lost and forgotten works of the inventors of the past, contraptions which they hoped would make life easier, and at the same time, make them rich and famous? Scour antique fairs, the Internet, second-hand

shops and pawnbrokers. Have fun—you will be amazed at the gadgetry that is still out there waiting to be discovered. ----------Maurice Collins has been building his collection of 2,000 original contraptions and devices for 40+ years, and it has been exhibited in more than 30 museums across Europe. I started my own printing company in 1961, and after some years of running a range of businesses, I retired and spent some wonderful times building my collection. The latest book on Maurice’s collection is Bizarre and Outlandish Gadgets and Doohickeys, and it contains nearly 1,000 images of eccentric and ingenious contraptions he has collected over 40 years. The book is divided into sections, covering “Time and Money” through “Leisure Time and Keeping Fit,” 24 areas of social history reflecting 100 years of everyday products that would have been purchased across a shop counter. It is published by Schiffer Publishing and is available for $60.

Two major bottle collections Will be Sold March 3-11 by American Bottle Auctions Two major fine bottle collections – the Vince Madruga collection of Western bitters and medicines, and the John O’Neill collection of mostly early San Francisco bottles, whiskeys and sodas – will headline Auction #63, a two-part online and catalog auction by American Bottle Auctions. Part 1 was held Feb. 10-18. Part 2 is scheduled March 3-11. Interested bidders may register for Auction #63 now, on the American Bottle Auctions website, at www.americanbottle.com. Inquiries may be made via e-mail, to info@americanbottle.com. “Auction 63 will offer quite possibly the top Western glass auction ever presented,” said Jeff Wichmann of American Bottle Auctions. “Vince Madruga amassed his collection over a 50-year span, and his bitters include many of the top Western examples known. All are relatively fresh to the market. And many bottles in John O’Neill’s collection are one-of-a-kinds or extremely rare.”

18

Highlights of the Madruga collection will include a turquoise Catawba Wine Bitters and an extraordinary E.G. Lyons from San Francisco. “These are simply the tip of the iceberg,” Mr. Wichmann remarked. “Of the 89 western bitters being sold from the Madruga collection, many are either one of a few known or market fresh, having never been sold at public auction before.” The number of bottles that have never come up for auction from the O’Neill collection will give collectors a chance to bid on items previously unavailable or even unknown to the hobby. His collection of Pacific Glass Works base embossed items are not only rare, many are unique and never before seen. O’Neill’s collection is an eclectic mix of rare and highly desirable examples. To learn more about American Bottle Auctions and Part 2 of Auction #63, slated for March 3-11, log on to www.americanbottle.com.

by Corey Amaro At the brocante, I found a stack of letters written during WWII between a husband and his wife. The husband lived in the city, and the wife and their child lived in the countryside “because it was safer” At first, I was drawn to them because of how they were worn and stacked in perfect order. You might say the “art factor” attracted me. Then the antique dealer, seeing that I didn’t get the letters’ real significance, told me they were written during WWII. I asked him how much he wanted for them. He wanted half of France, or close to it. He wanted more than I wanted to pay, that much is true. I told him that I did not read French very well and that I wanted them because they looked attractive, a conversational piece of art, a “living” coffee tabletop book, but letters instead. He shook his head, “You don’t understand their worth.” “I’ll give you five euro.” I might as well have stabbed him in the heart, he looked so shocked. Then I mentioned that my son liked history and he would read them to me, and I batted my eyes, “Pretty please with sugar on it.” Or at least, that is what I

The writing was very small because paper was scarce during the war. thought I was saying in French. Flirting works. Sorry but it does. I got the letters for five euros. Later, while my friend Nathalie waited for me in the car, she started to read the letters. When I came back, she had tears in her eyes. “These letters are incredible, they are full of emotion.” At that point, I felt terrible that I had bartered for history with flirtation. When I got home, I put the letters on the kitchen table. The next day after breakfast, French Husband and my son Sacha carefully opened them. The letters had a hypnotic power; they read in complete silence. Every now and then, they would look up at each other, share a line or two, then bury their heads back into a time long ago. Annie, my dear friend, shared her stories of WWII with me. When she talked about her past, her eyes glazed over, andTimeless I saw her go back to when she was a young girl by her Antiques.8th.H..12.08_SEA.indd parent’s side. the Americans arrived, they had chewing gum and chocolate. The American soldiers gave it to the children whenever they entered a town. Later, the troops heard that Annie’s mother had the best homemade soup; soup made with vegetables from her garden. They traded chewing gum and chocolate for bowls of soup. Most of Annie’s stories were not as dark as the ones written in the letters I bought at the brocante. The letters written are from Lyon, where the war raged bitterly. The letters always start with, “My Big Love.” Rarely do they mention any names; instead, they refer to people they know as “The one who worked at the bakery” or “The one who used to live underneath us.” They never say the enemy’s name, for fear that the letters might be opened and used against them, or worse, destroyed. The letters talk about how the enemy gathered the children, using them as human shields as they maneuvered from town to town. How farms were ransacked then burned to the ground. “The Wife” mentions how she felt safer in the city that was being bombed everyday than living in the country. Later, she talks about a butter factory that was raided by the enemy; the butter was burned. “Just to belittle, to taunt us in the face of slow starvation,” she added. She goes on to mention a small village of 35 residents, where she had thought to live safely, though over half were murdered in one day. “Whenever we hear a gunshot, we know someone is dying. Many are dying.” They write in details, often coded, out of anguish, fear and love for one another. Sacha and French Husband read ever so slowly, a few letters, often stopping...casting a distant look out the window, in deep thought, then continuing without a word. French Husband is methodical like that, and it teaches me to harbor my excitement and not open all of the letters just to pick them apart for a quick fix. I wanted to read the last letter, but the two of them would not have it. I guess I am out-numbered and on the wrong side of the fence on this matter. The handwriting is exceptionally small. French Husband told me that is because paper was scarce and to post a letter during that time was expensive... in more ways than one. I kept thinking how much they loved each other—imagine walking to the post office, or to a drop-off zone, to mail a letter in a battle zone? That is commitment. “I do not know if I could have done that,” I said to the men in my life engrossed with reading. Nonetheless, French Husband looked up at me with sad eyes. “Love motivates,” he responded. “But so does fear!” Often, the letters were written on mismatched pieces of scrap paper. They needed to “talk” to one another, to share what they were witnessing, to “be present” with each other through the details of how they were surviving. They found paper and a mail carrier as their healing balm for one another. --------------Corey Amaro is an American living in the south of France. What’s Selling on eBay? By Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod

$4,306.60 (46 bids, 20 bidders): C. 1905 Antique Heddon Dowagiac Killer #400 Fishing Lure Original Box. This is the box only. Box has early label and identifies this as “Copper No 400”. Box is complete, and while there are no major tears, there is some staining, toning and scuffing to the surface and labels. Box is 5.5 inches long. Rare find. (Photo: eBay seller estate-finders) DBA: This is an amazing price for the box. I found where Morphy Auctions sold the actual #400 Killer Underwater Minnow lure, c. 1905, for $800 in 2015. The hooks had been replaced, and nothing was mentioned about a box. This is normally one of the highest-selling fishing lures. The oldest of the Heddon lures had the name “Dowagiac,” named for James Heddon’s hometown. The “killer” lure appeared around 1902 and came in the white picture box as shown. It is rare, and while there are many references on the Internet where there are offers to buy this box for $1,500, this may be a new standard.

$4,055.11 (35 bids, 11 bidders): Antique Chambers Wing Glass Telegraph Insulator Patent Dec. 19, 1871 Aqua Blue. Please see pictures as I know nothing about insulators. I do not even know if this is a telegraph insulator. Overall in good condition with a few small minor chips on the bottom inner diameter and a larger one on the outer diameter. This has lots of very tiny air bubbles in the glass and some larger bubbles as well. Has patent numbers Dec. 19th 1871 & Aug 14th, but I cannot read the year on either one. I picked these up at a recent estate sale as they looked interesting, like a wing on them. (Photo: eBay seller watchitfizz) DBA: I found an identical insulator that was sold at auction in October of 2014 for $4,070. This is an extremely rare object which is reflected in the price. This insulator is nicknamed the “wing” and is a part of the Chambers lightning rod insulator system. It was made by Hemingway Glass Company which was founded by Robert Hemingway and Ralph Gray in 1848. In 1933, the company was sold to the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. The main plant in Muncie was shut down in 1966, and insulator production ceased. This is presumably one part of a set of four parts with the “wing” component being the “rare” one. Although this is a lot of money for this small object, there are many sales with similar prices paid, suggesting that this is the market price for this insulator.

$3,819.99 ($32 bids, 13 bidders): Miami Beach Florida Motor Club Highway Mile Marker Porcelain Sign. It is not very often that we are unable to find another example of a sign we are listing, but the antique 1920s porcelain sign in this auction is one of those rare examples. Measuring 24 inches tall by 16 inches wide, this authentic antique sign reads in the bold letters: “MIAMI FLORIDA, 25 MILES.” This highway mile-marker sign depicts a large palm tree in the center with several figures on Miami Beach in the background. Out on the ocean, you can see a steamship, and driving up from the beach is a classic 1920s automobile. Along the bottom it reads, “The Land of Palms & Sunshine,” and on the top, “This sign was Erected by Miami Chamber of Commerce and Motor Club.” Also, there was, “$25.00 Reward for the arrest and conviction of any person mutilating or injuring this sign in any manner.” This antique Miami Florida sign is in very good original and unrestored condition. There is some chipping to the porcelain, mostly around the mounting holes. There are also some light crazing lines to the surface near the automobile. (Photo: eBay seller wwolst12) DBA: In 1912, Carl Fisher purchased an undeveloped island that would become Miami Beach, Florida, in hopes of creating a winter vacation land for snowbirds from the Midwestern states. While Henry Ford invented the automobile, roads connecting areas of America were not yet created. He wanted to connect a system of roads initially from Chicago to Miami that would be built with money from local governments and automobile clubs. This concept expanded, and a road from the Canadian border to Miami became known as the Dixie Highway, which began construction in 1915. In 1916, Congress passed the Federal Aid Road Act which provided some help.

The artwork and descriptions seems very similar to the signs from the old Dixie Highway. The Dixie Highway magazine was published from 1916 to 1926 and stressed the importance of how quickly and efficiently the Army could haul supplies and troops from Fort McPherson to Fort Oglethorpe. This was a major factor in the reasoning for the Interstate Highway System in 1956. It also changed the way America lived. Prior to the building of this first road system, only the very well-to-do could afford to vacation. During the 1920s when this road became viable, a road trip from Chicago to Miami would take two weeks. Many families would camp along the road. The interest in the old Dixie Highway and in the beginnings of a road system in the United States is a reason for the price that this sign fetched.

$4,325 (40 bids, 17 bidders): 19thC Antique Walter L. Main Circus Lithograph Poster Strong Man Teeth Steel. If you are not familiar with the Walter L. Main Circus, it was founded in 1886 by Walter Main, who was the son of a horse farmer. This Pennsylvania-based circus went on to become best known for his trained animal expositions, including many acts involving horses. In May of 1893, this circus suffered a tragic train crash in Tyrone, Penn., and many of their animals were lost as well as four workers. Although I was able to find other posters from the Walter L. Main Circus, I was unable to find another example of the poster here. Measuring 40 inches wide by 30 inches tall, not including the attached advertisement at the bottom, this large 19th century poster depicts “Mons. Henri W. Leonard, The Man with Teeth of Steel and Jaws of Adamant.” This strongman is depicted holding a barrel, a firing cannon and an entire horse with only his mouth. This colorful lithograph poster was printed by the Donaldson Litho Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, and still has strong, un-faded colors. There is some loss to the paper along the right-hand edge, as well as a couple of small tears to the top left edge that have been taped by a past owner. Overall, this rare 19th century circus poster is in very good original and unrestored condition. (Photo: eBay seller wwolst12) DBA: This is a very high price for a circus poster. Why? There are several factors to analyze: is it the circus that would cause this one to sell for so much money? Is it the person who is shown in the poster? Is it the company that produced the poster? After searching, this is what I discovered: the Donaldson Company was noted for their circus posters and the very vivid colors that were used. They are also known in legal circles as part of a copyright lawsuit. No information could be found on the person Henri Leonard, and I suspect that it was

not the legal name of the circus performer. I could find nothing to support a theory that the Walter Main Circus would be more collectible than other circus companies. I would suggest that this poster was desirable to a collector because of the vivid colors, the premier circus poster company that produced it, and that the “strong man” was a major component of the circus intrigue.

Fruits sur une table

Paul Gauguin

Gauguin’s When Will You Marry?

This is Paul Gauguin’s Fruits sur une table (Fruits on a Table). In addition to its creator, it is famous for its story. Fruits on a Table was painted in 1889. In 1970, it and another painting (Woman With Two Armchairs by Pierre Bonnard) were stolen from the London apartment of Sir Mark Kennedy and his wife Mathilda Marks—the daughter of the founder of the UK retail home and food store chain Marks & Spencer, which was established in 1882 and has 1,382 stores worldwide.1 After the burglary, the paintings seemed to disappear. The thieves boarded a train with their loot and made their way across France. In Turin, Italy, they exited the train—leaving the paintings on board. Were they nervous about being caught? No one knows because they were never found. However, train workers did find the paintings, but not knowing their value, they took them to the lost and found storage area. Five years later, the paintings appeared in a Turin railway auction where they were purchased by a Fiat factory worker for about $25. For 40 years, the paintings remained in his possession. It was not until the owner’s son saw Fruits sur une table in an art book that they learned its value and that it was stolen. The father and son then contacted the police who took possession of both paintings. But the story does not end there. Under Italian law, if there are no claimants to a lost or stolen item and if the item was purchased in good faith not knowing it was stolen, a court can award the item to the last person to possess it. The original owners had no children, and no claimants came forward so in 2014, an Italian court awarded the paintings to the retired Fiat factory worker. In 2014, Fruits sur une table was valued at £8 million to £25 million, and Woman With Two Armchairs was put at about £500,000.2 The happy owner, who requested anonymity, reported he had plans to sell the paintings privately. No word since if he did, but one can assume. Paul Gauguin’s Nafea Faa Ipoipo (When Will You Marry?) was purchased by State of Qatar for an undisclosed amount in 2015, but is believed to be about $300 million. If so, it is tied with Willem de Kooning’s Interchange for the most expensive painting; it also sold for $300 million in 2015.

a ‘New’ dA vinci The French government has declared a newly found Leonardo da Vinci sketch of Saint Sebastian as a national treasure, and it cannot be sold for 30 months to allow time for $15.8 million to be raised to purchase it, according to NDTV.com. A retired French doctor brought the sketch to Tajan, a well-known French auction house, along with other more than a dozen other pieces collected by his father. Tajan reported this is the first da Vinci work to surface in 15 years and that it is one of eight drawings of The Martyred Saint Sebastian recorded in the Codex Atlanticus, a compilation by da Vinci of his writings in drawings that fill twelve volumes.

Name This Famous Person by Mike McLeod

Chaney only made one talkie, The Unholy Three, a remake of his previous silent movie, because he resisted the new films’ lack of communicating through movement and mime. Even so, Chaney voiced five characters in it, including a parrot.2 The other talent that made Lon Chaney a silent movie star was his skill with make-up and costumes, which he taught himself in the theater as a stage manager and actor. He was an innovator and a master in this field. He is famous for his roles—and his make-up—in The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, London After Midnight, Mr. Wu and many others. A side note about The Hunchback of Notre Dame: it was a mega movie with 2,000 extras and 200 costume makers. Only the façade of the Notre Dame Cathedral first floor was actually constructed; the rest was just a painting that was held between the camera and the façade.3 Because of his skill with make-up, Chaney played dual roles in a few movies. In Outside the Law, he was both the gangster Black Mike Sylva and the kind Ah Wing.4 In London After

(Photo courtesy of Heritage Auctions, HA.com) The “Man of a Thousand Faces” Lon Chaney was born on April 1, 1883 to parents who were both deaf and mute. In his youth, he learned to pantomime to communicate with them.1 That skill served him well in his 162 movie credits in silent films.

Midnight, Chaney played both Professor Edward C. Burke and the sharp-toothed Vampire. The only known copy of this silent movie made in 1927 was lost in an MGM movie vault fire on May 13, 1967. The movie poster for London After Midnight holds the record for the highest amount paid for one in a public auction—$478,000. A 1925 The Phantom of the Opera movie one sheet, 27 x 41 inches, brought $203,150. Both sold at Heritage Auctions in 2014. Chaney’s son Creighton Tull Chaney, aka Lon Chaney, Jr., followed in his father’s footsteps and make-up made him into the Wolfman, Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy and Dracula. In five Wolfman movies he played the dual roles of Lawrence Talbot and his alter ego, the Wolfman.5 Lon Chaney passed away on August 26, 1930 at the age of 47 due to a throat hemorrhage.6 Of the characters he brought to life, Lon Chaney said, “I wanted to remind people that the lowest types of humanity may

have within them the capacity for supreme self-sacrifice. The dwarfed, misshapen beggar of the streets may have the noblest ideals. Most of my roles since The Hunchback of Notre Dame, such as The Phantom of the Opera, He Who Gets Slapped, The Unholy Three, etc., have carried the theme of self-sacrifice or renunciation. These are the stories which I wish to do.”7 Ted Carlton of Utah, James R. Stewart, Jr. of North Carolina, and Jeff Liebowitz of South Carolina correctly identified Lon Chaney. -------------1 Lonchaney.com. 2 Imdb.com, “Lon Chaney.” 3 Flickeralley.com, “Lon Chaney Gives an Interview For Once,” by Robert M. Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

What’s It Worth, An Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich

What Was the First Photographed Presidential Inauguration? We recently observed the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as our 45th President. It was pictured in newspapers and magazines and on television and cable news. It was everywhere. But what was the first U.S. Presidential Inauguration to be photographed? Louis Daguerre was generally credited with inventing the photograph and introduced his daguerreotype in 1839. But while the daguerreotype worked well for still portraits, it was not ideal for photographing large crowds and events. Back in 1857 while the U.S. Capitol was still under construction, it was John Wood, using a wet plate collodion camera, who first photographed the inauguration of a James Buchanan, our 15th President. What’s It Worth? In 2016, Sotheby’s sold a photograph taken at Lincoln’s first inauguration in 1861 for $27,500. ------------Mike Ivankovich is an auctioneer, appraiser, home downsizing expert and host of the “What’s It Worth? Ask Mike the Appraiser” radio show that airs live on Friday mornings, 9 am to 10 am on WBCB 1490 AM, in the Greater Philadelphia PA area or listen on the Internet at www.WBCB1490.com or visit www.AskMikeTheAppraiser. com.

Antiques and Appraising School Releases Data on Top-Selling Items The latest results from the Asheford Institute of Antiques survey of buying trends within the antiques and collectibles community were published online by the school’s Research & Polling Department. After conducting similar surveys over the past five years, the internationally recognized home-study school on antiques, collectibles and appraising released its latest trending data from the antiques marketplace for the 2016 year. The survey, which concentrated on compiling and grouping information related to customers buying habits over a twelve-month period, was brought back this year after a strong response on the school’s website from readers requesting updates from previous surveys, reported Director of the Institute Charles Green. He went on to note that there were some interesting differences between the results from this poll, and those from previous years. “We’ve made our questionnaire sharper, and more specific, as well as bringing the participant base up to over 1,200 respondents, but the questions are still essentially the same,” said Green, “even though the answers are quite different.” Carlee Jackson, the school’s public relations director agreed with Mr. Green’s assessment, and stated that the main goal of this year’s survey was to once again measure the interest in current trends of antiques and collectibles, based on actual sales results and requests for specific items. She noted that while the survey was informal in nature, and not predicated on scientific formulas, the results were still quite compelling when viewed in their entirety. “What we’re seeing is a strong change in direction when it comes to certain areas of the decorative arts,” said Jackson, “It’s not just Mid-century modern that’s moving, but a number of other areas that are also making up ground.” Jackson went on to note that interest in 1960s and ‘70s collectibles,

particularly space and Star Wars-related items, had also risen sharply as well. “There’s no doubt in my mind that these are the new, younger collectors that we’re seeing today. They’re the ones who are really beginning to drive the industry forward.” Aside from the popularity of Mid-Century Modern furniture, many of the younger dealers from the survey also noted that literally anything 20th century, from brutalist metal sculptures to lesser known painters, had also become increasingly sought after by both dealers and collectors. “We’re in a virtual bidding war every time something from this era comes up,” said Shannon Smith, a young East Coast dealer. Older dealers seemed to echo a similar sentiment but indicated that there were other areas of the market that were beginning to show signs of renewed interest, particularly in the area of Greek and Egyptian revival styles—especially when done in stone and marble. Claude Paquin, a longtime dealer from Quebec, said some of his Victorian marble-top side tables, which hadn’t moved in years, were suddenly flying out the door. “Who knows?” said Paquin, “Maybe it’s the beginning of something old!” Readers can view the full results of the Institute’s survey at the school’s Student News page at: http://www.asheford. com/2016-survey-results.html. Catawba Valley Pottery & Antiques Festival Planning is well underway for the Catawba Valley Pottery & Antiques Festival’s 20th anniversary, March 24-25 at the Hickory Metro Convention Center, Hickory, N.C., offering a buying opportunity for and educational programs about North Carolina’s traditional handmade pottery. The Festival began 20 years ago to showcase Catawba Valley alkaline-glazed stoneware that was continuing to be made by local potters. Catawba Valley is one of three potteryproducing areas in the state. Because potters were firing predominately in wood-fired kilns, pottery was available for sale in large quantities at odd times. Marketing was by wordof-mouth, not the best approach. The original goal was to provide a place, one day a year, when Catawba Valley pottery could be purchased. Twenty years ago, folk art collectors were seeking Southern pottery face jugs and food preservation vessels. Catawba Valley potters were in the forefront of making face jugs because of the history of their being made by Harvey Reinhardt and the Hilton Family, and by Burlon Craig who was still an active potter. Over the years, the CVP&AF grew to include pottery from across the state and into the South: Georgia, South Carolina and other locations. The Festival became the primary destination for people interested in potters making traditional ware, pots used daily in food preparation. Today potters, including some from the Penland School of Crafts with academic training, have joined the vendors at the show. All vendors are juried.

Education has always been an important focus of the festival. Because the two non-profits supported, the Historical Association of Catawba County and the North Carolina Pottery Center, are engaged in teaching history, each festival has an exhibit and lecture. This year, the exhibit is titled, “Twenty Classic Catawba Valley Pots,” organized by Dr. Charles Zug. The lecturer is local potter Kim Ellington speaking about his introduction to the local pottery and what it means to be a working potter. The Saturday exhibit and lecture are part of the admission fee of $6 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. The lecture will be 11 a.m. on Saturday. Festival hours are 9 a.m–5 p.m.; demonstrations and videos are also available. Friday night’s Preview Party, 7-10 p.m., offers an early buying opportunity and a full Southern supper. A fundraiser for the two non-profits, tickets are $45 each (also good for Saturday entry), advance reservations required by March 18th. The 110+ vendors include working potters and antique dealers bringing old pottery, furniture, textiles, folk art and decorative accessories to give context to the hand-made pottery. The CVP&AF is considered the primary destination for people interested in Southern traditional pottery. Whether buying a coffee mug or a work of art, you will have a fun experience. All profits go to the non-profit institutions. Info: folkpot@charter.net, 828-322-3943, 828-324-7294 or www. catawbavalleypotteryfestival.org Pottery has been made in the Catawba Valley since 1820 and from the Seagrove area since 1750. North Carolina is the only state where the tradition has continued uninterrupted to the present; it is recognized on a national level as having an outstanding craft community.

The Shops Of Sarasota Sarasota just may be the ultimate beach town, with its sun-kissed location on the Gulf of Mexico, more than 200 sunny days a year and an average yearround temperature of 71 degrees. But there are other reasons why Sarasota was named Best Small City to Live by Money Magazine. Sarasota County -- which includes Venice, Northport, Longboat and Siesta Keys -- is alive with culture, sports, affordable homes, a brisk job market and great schools.

We are Proud to Present… Coming March 1 Presenting our greatest western bottle auction in a two-part auction format We will be starting off the upcoming year with a bang, offering the collections of two knowledgeable collectors who’ve spent a lifetime assembling western bottles in virtually every category. We will be bringing to auction a lifetime of collecting from the Vince Madruga and John O’Neill collections. Up for sale will be bitters, medicines, fruit jars, whiskies, sodas, beers and many very rare western bottles, many never sold at public auction. We believe this to be the largest western antique bottle auction ever. It’s so big we’ve had to make it a two-part sale. We will be sending out reminders and our showroom will be open by appointment after the New Year. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to bid on some of the finest western bottles ever assembled.
