A teapot is defined as a vessel which has a handle, spout and lid for making and serving tea. But a teapot is so much more than that description. There would be no discussion about teapots without the discovery of tea. It has been stated that tea was mentioned as early as the Zhou Dynasty which ended in 222 BC. The more popular belief about the discovery of tea is that the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung discovered tea around 2700 BC. The first book on the subject of tea, The Ch’a Ching, was not printed until 870 in China. Tea had been discovered more than 3,000 years before, but the first teapot was not produced until around 1492. Even though teapots as we know them today have only been around for 525 years, there have been vessels for brewing and drinking tea for much longer. For many years, tea was in the form of bricks. A piece would be cut off and placed into a handle-less vessel, or cup, where it was brewed with boiling water and sipped from that same cup. This method continued to be used when tea was brewed in powder form. During the Sung Dynasty (960 to 1279), tea leaves were pounded into a fine powder. This was whisked with a bamboo brush after boiling water was added. In the late 14th century, there was even greater interest in drinking tea because processed tea leaves were being steeped. The processed leaves reduced the bitterness and enhanced the flavor of the tea. It is believed that the initial shape and style of teapots may have been influenced by Chinese wine ewers or ceramic kettles. Another possibility is that Islamic coffee pots were being imitated. Whatever the original influences were for the teapot, there have been amazing changes in the style and materials used in the production of teapots. Over the years, teapots have ranged

Teapots come in a numerous array of shapes and sizes and have been made from many different types of materials, including pottery, porcelain, silver, cast iron, glass, wood, pewter and other metals. A brief history about teapots and some examples are presented in this article. The first teapots were produced in the YiXing potteries in China around 1492. The YiXing or “purple” clay (also called zisha) was porous and left unglazed. The teapot became “seasoned” with the particular tea that was brewed in it. These teapots served the dual purposes of brewing and drinking. Around this time, the drinking of tea was transitioning from primarily for medicinal purposes to ceremonial proceedings. During the Japanese tea ceremony, or chanoyu, red clay teapots and tea bowls were used. Towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, around the mid-17th century, the drinking of tea was becoming more widespread. As tea drinking became more relaxed in Japan, cast iron teapots, or tetsubin, were used to brew and serve tea. More people were drinking tea for pleasure. As tea went from China to Europe at the end of the 17th century, teapots were also imported. These porcelain teapots were mostly in blue and white underglaze. European potters were eager to make their own teapots. The hard paste formula porcelain was made by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus in Dresden, Germany, in 1708. This led to more creativity and new styles and designs. The Meissen Factory opened in 1710 and still produces today. It has been acknowledged that China gave us tea, but that the gift of teapots is from England. Once the British mastered

the art of making porcelain that did not shatter when boiling water was added, they made and continue to make some of the best china. Porcelain is made of pure white clay and crystalline minerals and is fired at very high temperatures. Hard paste porcelain is made of pure white clay (kaolin) and china stone crystalline mineral (petuntse), which is found only in China. Soft paste porcelain is made with fine clay and glass-type substances. Bone china is made by adding calcified animal bone ash to petuntse and kaolin. There are many ceramic and porcelain manufacturers in England including but not limited to: Coalport Porcelain, Davenport Pottery, Leeds Pottery, Minton, Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester, James Sadler and Sons, Josiah Wedgwood, Shelly Potteries, Spode and Wedgwood. The influence of Catherine of Braganza on the consumption of tea in Britain is documented. As the affluent participated more in the drinking of tea, silver tea services were a must-have. The less affluent had to settle for pewter. When afternoon tea became fashionable, thanks to Anna Russell, 7th Duchess of Bedford and lady in waiting for and friend to Queen Victoria, all of the

tea ware and accoutrements necessary were increasingly manufactured, beginning around the mid-18th century. Teapots have been made in many types of metal other than silver. Examples can be found in cast iron, pewter, brass, aluminum, copper, tin, stainless steel and chrome. The 20th century saw the popularity of glass teapots increase. They are particularly lovely for observing tea brewing, especially when a flowering tea is being steeped. Less commonly seen are teapots made out of wood, but some have been around for a while. (See photos 11-12) Various factors are used to identify and date teapots. The shape, color, decoration and the presence or absence of a maker’s mark all help in the identification and dating process. Additionally, teapots imported to the USA before about 1898 were not required to be marked with the country of origin. Therefore, that information may not be present. From 1898 to 1918 teapots imported to the USA had to be marked with the country of origin. After 1918, the teapot had to be marked with “made in” the country of origin.

The teapot may have been invented out of necessity, but it clearly developed very early into a form of artistic expression. Even the most basic teapot has shape, texture and color. The parts of the teapot, such as the handle, lid and spout, provide additional elements to improve function and/or enhance artistic design. Functionally, the inner spout of the teapot may have a strainer (which distinguishes it from a coffee pot) to hold back the leaves. The lid may have a small hole to allow the steam to vent. Teapots have also been made for advertising and as souvenirs. Over the years, artists have created masterful works of art only limited by their imaginations. At the same time, some of the more elaborate and unusual teapots are created at the expense of utility, but they are unique works of art. Teapots will always be appreciated for their practical use and artistic pleasure. ------------------- Dr. Unjeria Jackson has been a tea drinker since childhood. She began collecting teapots about 23 years ago and now has about 1,800 teapots. She has given lectures to numerous groups and hosted many afternoon teas in her home. There was an exhibition of some of her teapots and a series of lectures by Dr. Jackson about her collection and the history of tea at the Morris Museum in Morristown, N.J. in 2011. April 2, 1931: Jackie Mitchell, a female pitcher for the Chattanooga Lookouts minor league team, struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in order in an exhibition game against the New York Yankees. Jackie fanned Gehrig with three pitches; she was just 17 years old at the time. Jackie was pulled after walking the third batter she faced (exploratorium.edu, “the Girls of Summer”), and the Yankees went on to beat the Lookouts, 14-4. In 2005, a rare wire photo (transmitted by telegraph) of Gehrig and Ruth watching Jackie Mitchell warm up sold for $403 at Cowan’s Auctions.

April 8, 1963: Pete Rose stepped to the plate for the first time in his Major League career. In 2016, a 1963 Topps Pete Rose-1963 Rookie Stars #537 rated PSA Gem Mint 10 hustled up $717,000 at Heritage Auctions. Also on the card with Rose were Pedro Gonzales, Ken McMullen and Al Weis. Pete Rose is the all-time hit leader with 4,256; he tops Ty Cobb’s 4,189 and Hank Aaron’s 3,771 (baseballalmanac, “Career Leader for Hits”). He was an All-Star 17 times, a World Series champion three times and World Series MVP once, Rookie of the Year in 1963, and a member of the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. Pete Rose said: “I’d walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball,” and “Somebody’s gotta win and somebody’s gotta lose, and I believe in letting the other guy lose” (brainyquote.com).

April 8, 1974: With his 715th home run this day, Hank Aaron beat Babe Ruth’s home run record. Aaron hit 755 homers in his career. In 1999, his 755th home run ball sold for $650,000 at Guernsey’s (usatoday30.usatoday.com, 7/25/07).

Drafted by the Washington Capitols in the ninth round, Lloyd’s first game was on October 31, 1950. He was also the first African American assistant coach, working for the Detroit Pistons. Over the decade of his career, he scored 4,682 points in 560 games. Earl Lloyd was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 (hoophall.com, “Earl Lloyd”). He passed away in 2015. In 2014, Grey Flannel Auctions sold a 1959 Detroit Pistons warm-up fleece jacket worn by Earl Lloyd for $1,562.

April 10, 1896: The first modern Olympic Summer Games marathon was run from Marathon to Athens, Greece, and won by Greek Spyridon Louis. He was awarded the Brèal Silver Cup, which was designed by French author Michel Brèal who also recommended the marathon be run in the footsteps of the Greek messenger Pheidippides. A Brèal Silver Cup went for $860,000 at Christie’s in 2012. Spyridon competed in no other running events afterwards. Spyridon Louis April 10, 1913: Walter “The Big Train” Johnson began a pitching streak of 55 2/3 scoreless innings that ended on May 14, 1913. His record was unbroken until 1968 when Don Drysdale threw 58. Currently, Orel Hershiser holds the record with 59 innings in 1988 (m.mlb.com, “The 10 longest scorelessinning streaks”). In 2013, Walter Johnson’s 1939 Presentational Hall of Fame plaque presented to him at the induction ceremony grabbed $47,800 at Heritage Auctions. Walter Johnson April 15, 1947: Jackie Robinson’s first game in Major League baseball. A ticket stub from that opening day game in 1947 at Ebbets Field with the Brooklyn Dodgers for a seat in the lower stand auctioned for $16,730 in 2015 at Heritage Auctions. A second ticket from the same game, but for the upper stand, sold for the same price. Slightly different that the ticket price on that historic opening day—the original cost was $1.25 for the lower stand ticket and $1.75 for the upper stand. The Dodgers beat the Boston Braves 5-3; Robinson scored the fourth run (sabr.org, “Jackie Robinson’s First Game”). The $1.25 Lower Stand ticket Jackie Robinson in 1944 when he played for the Negro Leagues’ Kansas City Monarchs.

April 16, 1947: The birth of Lew Alcindor who grew to 7 feet 2 inches and played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years. Later known as Kareem Abdul Jabar, he was a six-time NBA Champion and Hall of Famer with 38,387 points (24+ per game on average) and 17,440 rebounds. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. A 1969 Topps Lew Alcindor #25 card, PSA Gem Mint 10, scored $501,900 at Heritage Auctions in 2016. April 17, 1854: Adrian “Cap” Anson was born. In 2016, Christie’s auctioned his last bat from the 1897 season, graded PSA/DNA GU 10, for $427,500. It was 36 inches long and weighed 47.2 oz. Called “Cap” as captain of the Chicago White Stockings, Anson played first base and was the first player in baseball history to reach 3,000 hits; that was in 1897. Honus Wagner was the next in 1914 (mlb.mlb.com,”3,000 Hits Club”). Anson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939; he passed away on April 14, 1922. An 1888-89 N173 Old Judge Cigarettes Cabinet of Capt. Anson, SGC 60 EX 5, went for $11,950 at Heritage Auctions in 2016. This card was never sold in stores (only through the mail), so less were distributed.

The only Joe Montana 1981 Topps #216 rated BGS 10 connected with $65,800 at Modern Marvels Auctions in 2009 (beckett.com, “Pristine Montana RC Sells for $65k!”). His career stats are 273 TDs and 40,551 yards passing (espn.com, “Joe Montana”). He was Super Bowl champion four times and Super Bowl MVP three times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000. April 18, 1998: Michael Jordan played his final regular season game. The Chicago Bulls jersey he wore then sold for $173,240 at Goldin Auctions in 2015. April 24, 2016: Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams’ 1857 Laws of Baseball document skyrocketed to $3.26 million at SCP Auctions. A player and president of the New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, Adam’s rules established the base paths as 90 feet, set the number of players per team and innings at nine, and eliminated the accepted rule of the day of a ball caught on one bounce was an out. April 24, 2008: A complete set of 1915 Cracker Jack baseball cards, 176 total, in an original Cracker Jack album hit $157,000 at Sotheby’s. Eleven-year-old Ernie Gill of Canada sent 25 cents to Cracker Jack in 1914 to buy the entire set and an additional 10 cents for the album. Individual cards were the surprise in Cracker Jacks in 1914 and 1915, but the company also offered the complete 1915 set for a quarter. Single cards from the 1914 series are very valuable in NM-MT 8 condition. Some start at about $2,000. Christy Mathewson’s card is valued at $150,000, Shoeless Joe Jackson’s is $135,000, and Ty Cobb’s at $100,000 (psacard. com “1914 Cracker Jack Baseball Card Values”). Of course, finding a NM-MT 8 card that came from a box of candy-coated popcorn presents somewhat of a challenge these days.

April 26, 2015: Jim Brown’s NFL rookie contract with the Cleveland Browns signed by him and by Commission Bert Bell scored $21,228 at SCP Auctions. A legend and a Hall of Famer, Jim Brown is the only NFL player to average 100 yards rushing per game during his career. He retired a career leader with 126 TDs, 12,312 yards rushing and 1,863 single-season rushing yards in 1963 (bleacherreport.com, “Jim Brown”). Hinmatóowyalahtq̓it (Thunder Rolling Down the Mountain), or Chief Joseph, was born on March 3, 1840. He took his father’s name of Joseph after their conversion to Christianity. Both were chiefs of the Nez Perce. In 2012, Chief Joseph’s war shirt sold for $877,500 at the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction. The provenance was historic—a painting of him wearing the shirt is in the Smithsonian, and that image was used for a U.S. postage stamp issued in 1968.1 The Nez Perce lived in the Pacific Northwest, and in the early 1800s, they came in contact with Lewis and Clark during their expedition. Years later, homesteaders began moving onto Nez Perce land. Chief Joseph’s father always sought a way to live in peace with the settlers, and he made a treaty with the governor of the Territory of Washington in 1855 which established a reservation for the Nez Perce encompassing about seven million acres. However, that treaty was changed, invalidated, broken, superseded—whatever you want to call it—and replaced with another treaty in 1863 after gold was discovered there. In it, the Nez Perce were given another reservation, but it was just one-tenth the size of the first. Even worse, it was away from their traditional home lands and the sacred burial spots of their ancestors. Some of the Nez Perce chose to move to that reservation; others did not, including Chief Joseph (the son). Contentions arose when the army demanded the rest of the Nez Perce move to the reservation. This bad situation became tragic when some Nez Perce warriors attacked and killed several settlers. Knowing there would be repercussions, the war chiefs of the tribe and Chief Joseph decided to leave. They set off to join a friendly Crow Tribe in Montana. Continued after center gloss

In September 2016, a rare turquoise ground famille-rose teapot and cover known as “The Hui Mountain Retreat” and with a Qianlong Period (1736-1795) seal mark gaveled for $3.49 million at Sotheby’s in New York. It was 6 7/8 inches in length. Sotheby’s described it as: “This wonderful work of art, one of only two known, is an ode to Emperor Qianlong’s adoration of tea; the front features a figure, possibly the Qianlong Emperor, being served tea while admiring an open handscroll. The reverse is an imperial poem entitled, Jihuiquan peng zhulu ge (Brewing Tea by Hui Swing), written by the Emperor himself following a visit to the Hui Spring during his Southern Inspection Tour. (Photo courtesy of Coeur d’Alene Art Auction) Nearly 3,000 Nez Perce embarked on what became a 1,000+ mile journey, but they were not allowed to go in peace. The army sent soldiers after them—their departure was considered an act of war—and the Nez Perce with 800 warriors fought 2,000 soldiers in 18 engagements along the way. Traveling across Idaho, Montana, Wyoming (near Yellowstone) and back into Montana, they reached the Crow Tribe. However, the Crows would not take them in; from there, the Nez Perce headed north toward Canada to join Sitting Bull. Just 40 miles from the Canadian border, the army engaged the Nez Perce in a five-day battle, and the Nez Perce surrendered. In the end, about 1,000 Nez Perce, including women and children, died as result of the war with the army.2 The Nez Perce were promised they could return to their reservation, but Commanding General of the Army William

$3,521 (19 bids, 3 bidders): Victorian 1870s silk boots court dressmaker Madame Elise. An extraordinary pair of red and blue silk boots with turmeric yellow ribbon lacing, bells and gilded heels—made to match a silk costume— made by Madame Elise, 170 Regent Street, London, Court Dressmaker by special appointment to Her Royal Highness Princess of Wales (this was Alexandra of Denmark, who became Princess of Wales in 1863 when she married Edward, the future King Edward VII). This costume and boots date to the 1870s. You will find other images of beautiful costumes made by Madame Elise if you do an internet search; several are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The boots were clearly handmade as part of a very exclusive fancy dress outfit, a Columbine costume, perfectly and correctly made. I am listing the costume separately. The boots are complete with turmeric-coloured silk ribbon lacing and are in fabulous condition. No fragility of the silk and almost no damage. Very rare indeed to find antique shoes or boots in such amazingly good condition. The tops are adorned with bells, and there is a blue silk turnover lined with white kid leather. There is also a silk and kid-lined “tongue” inside the boots. All the brass hooks for lacing the boots are present. The only issue is a very tiny amount of nibbling to the blue silk turnovers. Some measurements: height of heel 5 cm.; length and width measured on the leather sole, 26 cm. x 6.5 cm.; height of boots 26 cm. Wonderful display items, a real find! These boots were made at a time when women wore long dresses, and their boots would just be glimpsed on occasion. Also, boots were either a dark basic color (black) or a light color (ivory). It is rare to find boots at all, and rarer still to find boots made by a prominent dressmaker to match a gown. These boots were probably worn once for some special event. At a time when most people had all of their clothing fit into a small armoire, these boots do not fit the norm.

The accompanying dress— $2,286 (14 bids, 4 bidders): Victorian 1870s silk costume - court dressmaker Madame Elise. An extraordinary silk costume made by Madame Elise, 170 Regent Street, London - Court Dressmaker by special appointment to Her Royal Highness Princess of Wales. This costume dates to the 1870s. The costume is complete with turmeric-coloured silk ribbon lacing, lace and a very intricately layered underskirt attached to the silk overskirt, layers of pleated tarlatan and lace. There are bells attached to every corner of both top and skirt; they all appear to be present. This is in fantastic condition, with no underarm staining and no fragility of the silk. I have photographed the damage I can find, some nibbling to the underskirts and also to a couple of areas along the bottom hemline. Some measurements (all taken with the garments laid flat and measured straight across): corseted top shoulder to shoulder, 36cm.; underarm to underarm, 46 cm.; waist when laced, 33 cm.; skirt waistband, 33cm. and length, 90 cm. I must admit that I believe that it is due to the “costume” nature of the outfit. Many period gowns and dresses that are sold on fabulous Internet sites are for occasions such as weddings, the Oscars, etc. This dress would probably be for display only.

These were fired up with a gas burner and filled with water in which the steam would rise to warm towels. Designed & patented by EK (or KE) Dec 1, 1925 / Jan 12, 1926. Please note that the item was previously owned and shows heavy signs of wear. One of the wood handles is cracked, and the copper has slight dents. It has not been tested for actual use and would be considered a collectible or conversation piece. Sold as-is. Approximate dimensions: overall height is 59 inches and the rounded copper top is about a 20-inch diameter. Weight is 93 lbs. It’s a rarity to find an item that has absolutely no indication of use. We do not repair,

This fragment from one of the Dead Sea Scrolls found in a cave in Qumran, Israel, is recognizable by just about everyone. Bedouin shepherds initially discovered some of the caves in 1946 and 1947. Of the first seven scrolls brought out was the Isaiah Scroll which measures one inch shy of 25 feet long. It records all 66 chapters of the Book of Isaiah recorded in the Bible, minus some verses lost due to decay and damage. In February, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem reported the finding of a cave that had contained Dead Sea Scrolls at one time but was looted in the mid-20th century. Left in the cave were: storage jars and lids dating to the Second Temple Period (352 BC– 68 AD; the Scrolls date to 300 BC-100 AD); fragments of scroll wrappings; a string used to tie scrolls; and a “…piece of worked leather that was a part of a scroll.”1 The University reported this was the first discovery of a scroll cave in 60 years and the twelfth cave used to store them for safekeeping.

To-date, 981 Dead Sea Scrolls have been discovered, most made of parchment and animal skins. However, one was made of copper. It did not contain biblical or scriptural writings but recorded 64 places where gold, silver and scrolls could be found. Part of it have been translated at: “Forty two talents lie under the stairs in the salt pit…. Sixty-five bars of gold lie on the third terrace in the cave of the old Washers House…. Seventy talents of silver are enclosed in wooden vessels that are in the cistern of a burial chamber in Matia’s courtyard. Fifteen cubits from the front of the eastern gates, lies a cistern. The ten talents lie in the canal of the cistern…. Six silver bars are located at the sharp edge of the rock which is under the eastern wall in the cistern. (DSS 3Q15, col. II, translation by Hack and Carey.)”2 None of these treasure have ever definitively been found, even though many have searched for it. Some believe these treasures are a myth, just a fairytale. Others ask, who writes a fairytale on a valuable sheet of beaten copper and hides it in a cave? Many think it could be treasures from the Second Temple, or the Temple of Herod, because the records mention tithing vessels and “priestly vestments.” Also, the amount of the treasure is gigantic—4,630 talents of gold and silver. The weight of a talent about 2,000 years ago isn’t known exactly, and amounts vary from 75 lbs. to 130 lbs. On the low end, 4,630 talents would equal 347,250 lbs. of gold and silver— worth a billion dollars or more.3 The copper scroll was found rolled up, oxidized and broken into two pieces. Its brittleness made it impossible to unroll. Elvis Presley’s revolvers, sheriff’s badge and Graceland sales docs will be auctioned May 5-6-7 by Rock Island Two of Elvis Presley’s lavish revolvers will be available in a May 5-6-7 firearms auction hosted by Rock Island Auction Company in Rock Island, Illinois. The guns are accompanied by several items personally owned by the legendary performer, such as a diamond and ruby studded Shelby County sheriff’s badge, the Elvis-signed contract to purchase Graceland, and numerous personal files also signed by Presley. The King himself purchased the revolvers in 1970 from a Beverly Hills sporting goods store before sending them to Germany to be elaborately decorated. One was presented to Vice President Spiro Agnew as a gift but was returned a short time later while Agnew was being investigated for corruption. “We are thrilled to offer the memorabilia of an American rock and roll icon,” said RIAC President Kevin Hogan. “These revolvers are beautiful enough on their own to bring a great price, but when you add the iron-clad Elvis provenance, things really get exciting. Authentic Elvis items can bring high totals at auction, so we’re anticipating a lot of action when these cross the block.” The pre-auction estimate for one revolver, seen being held by Elvis in a period photograph, is $160,000-275,000. Rock Island Auction Company is no stranger to firearms owned by historical figures, having sold a rifle owned by President John F. Kennedy for $149,500 and a Winchester rifle presented by Buffalo Bill Cody for $345,000. My parents both suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, requiring specialized care. I am not a specialist in Alzheimer’s care nor am I trained to give medical advice. That said, as a child of two parents with Alzheimer’s, I know something about the struggles for families living with the disease. Since I have met many other Alzheimer’s families, I wanted to share what I have learned about how heirlooms contribute to happy visits with loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s. While my parents’ care facilities offered a quiet room, a reminiscence room, and a Snoezelen room to help stimulate the five senses, my parents responded best to personal visits from family and friends. My parents were more responsive and engaged if I brought an object from our family home for them to talk about and touch. If anyone looked in my pocketbook when I went to visit my parents, they would have thought I was crazy with all the collectibles I carried around. The most comforting activities for my parents was discussing stuff that they recognized as their own. Memory Album. I regularly brought a memory album filled with small ephemera (paper) mementos and photos. I scanned old photos and printed them out in booklet form from my computer. Digitalization allowed me to reproduce original photos and leave a copy of the memory albums with my parents without the fear of losing original family photographs. The album helped my Mom recall the names of her eight siblings, children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, etc. Dad

liked to talk about the summer cottage he built or his cars. Each page had a photo and a caption with names, ages, locations, approximate dates and descriptions. Photos of family homes, vacation spots, schools attended, church weddings, and childhood pets were featured. The visuals sparked questions and conversation from Mom and Dad. Mom’s Kitchen. In addition to the memory album, my Mom, who loved to cook for our big Italian family, lit up when I brought part of her kitchen canister set for our visit. The salt and pepper shakers would get her talking about favorite recipes and before you knew it, she would offer a tried and true baking tip! My Mom’s memory could be sparked by such diverse objects—shown to her one at a time so as not to overwhelm her—as her wedding photo, a Hummel figurine from her collection from the 1950s, or an afghan that she crocheted in the 1970s. Dad’s Sports. Of course, my Mom’s disease was different from my Dad’s. Mom was less combative, more engaged, and more talkative than Dad. My Dad was very quiet until he was upset by some outside stimuli. Then he was in the moment. After he calmed down and started to enjoy our visit, he would repeat sentences and phrases over and over again. A highly intelligent man and a professional athlete, listening to him repeat himself was very difficult for me. After trying to redirect him, I found that my Dad’s verbal loop could be interrupted if I introduced a related object to him. If we started our visit talking about baseball, my Dad would say the same sentence about the sport over and over again. Yet, if I were to hand him a baseball from our attic—one dating from his days as a big league pitcher—things quickly changed. He could grip the baseball and show me how to throw a curve. Gripping the baseball, Dad could explain proper finger placement or recall the day he struck out a minor leaguer named Mickey Mantle. Dad’s post-war era baseballs sparked a positive conversation and stopped, albeit temporarily, the repetitive chatter. This heirloom helped my Dad reminisce calmly. It helped me find comfort in the fact that he could recall memories with the aid of an heirloom. At my appraisal events, I often say that antiques spark all types of emotions. Some objects collected over a lifetime can stir memories even when you think there are none. Vintage
