JERE’S ANTIQUES
9 North Jefferson Street • Savannah, GA 31401
(912) 236-2815
Since 1976, Jere’s Antiques has catered to, and sold to, a wholesale trade of antiques dealers, designers and auction houses. We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. We continue to import a 40-foot container of furniture every 10-12 days. We inventory an incredible range of furniture, in all ages, styles and woods, in our

33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.
All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.
Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.
There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.
Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net

Recent Auction Results From Near & Far
By Ken Hall Chinese imperial firearm, $2.46 million, Sotheby’s The first Chinese firearm with an imperial reign mark ever to be offered at auction sold for $2.46 million at an auction held Nov. 9 by Sotheby’s in London. The gun—a brilliantly designed and exquisitely crafted musket—was created for the Qianlong Emperor (1711-1799) of the Qing Dynasty, arguably the greatest collector and patron of the arts in Chinese history. Incised on the breech of the barrel were Chinese characters denoting the musket’s peerless ranking: “Supreme Grade, Number One.” The price is inclusive of the buyer’s premium. Beethoven concerto, $452,400, Bonhams The sketch-leaf for Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto in E Flat Major (Op. 73), the Emperor concerto, one of the earliest sketch-leafs of this work and possibly containing Beethoven’s first draft of its famous themes, sold for $452,400 at an auction held Oct. 20 by Bonhams in London. The concerto was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf of Austria (1788-1831), brother of Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor and Beethoven’s friend, patron and pupil. It is one of only a handful of the sketch-leafs known. The price is inclusive of the buyer’s premium.
Ward Brothers pintail hen, $201,250, Guyette & Deeter A Ward Brothers “humpback” style pintail hen sold for $201,250 at a Fall Decoy & Sporting Art Auction held Nov. 10 by Guyette & Deeter (based in St. Michaels, Md.) at Talbot County Community Center in Easton, Md. It was a new world auction record for a Ward Brothers decoy. Also, a bufflehead drake by Elmer Crowell (Cape Cod, Mass.) soared to $143,750; a ruddy turnstone shorebird by Obediah Verity (Seaford, N.Y.) made $57,500; and a canvasback hen by John English (Florence, N.J.) rose to $51,750. Prices include a 15-percent buyer’s premium.

January 1, 1902: Michigan defeated Stanford 49-0 in the first Rose Bowl Game. A program from that inaugural gridiron event sold for $35,520 at SCP Auctions in 2003. The program included a photo of the Michigan team and its captain, “Captain White,” a diagram of the field, a scorecard, and the teams’ records for the year. Of the ten teams that played Michigan that season, not one scored a point. A total of only 14 points were scored against Stanford that year. The Rose Bowl Game program featured ads, including one on the back cover for The South Pasadena Ostrich Farm. In 2011, a 1902 program went for $11,352.50 at Heritage Auctions, and the same year, another made $22,784.96 at Lelands.
by Preston Truman, a former ball boy for the Utah Jazz who had previously met Jordan while bringing him his usual pregame food: applesauce. Despite being sick, Jordan scored 38 points for the Chicago Bulls, winning 90-88 against the Utah Jazz (espn.com, 12/12/13).

The program’s title page (Photo courtesy of Heritage Auctions, HA.com) January 2, 1965: The New York Jets signed Joe Namath for a record $427,000 (newyorkjets.com)—soon after he quarterbacked Alabama’s loss to the Texas Longhorns 21-7 in the Orange Bowl. Despite the defeat, Namath was chosen as MVP after throwing 18 completions out of 37 attempts for 255 yards and two touchdowns (Tuscaloosa News, 1/2/65). In 2014, MINT State sold Joe Namath’s 1965 Topps rookie card for $60,000 in a private sale. It was graded PSA MINT 9 (psacard.com, 9/8/14). Joe Namath’s rookie card (Photo courtesy of www. MINTStateInc.com) January 4, 2002: Michael Jordan scored his 30,000th point as a Washington Wizard to win against the Chicago Bulls 8983. Over his career, he rang up a total of 32,292 points; only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) and Karl Malone (36,928) have scored more (reference.com). In 2013, Michael Jordan’s autographed Air Jordan XII “Flu Game” shoes auctioned for $104,765 at Grey Flannel Auctions—the most paid thus far for a pair of his shoes. Worn in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, the shoes were consigned

January 8, 2016: An 1860s “Lemon Peel” leather baseball in pristine condition smacked $701.53 at Lelands.com. Measuring about 8 inches in circumference, it was a little smaller than the 9 to 9.25 inches of a regulation baseball.. Its less-thanperfectly-round shape must have created some crazy pitches. In those early days, teams made their own balls or bought them from local merchants. A Lemon Peel baseball (Photo courtesy of Lelands) January 17, 1942: Muhammad (Cassius Clay) Ali was born. The boxing gloves worn by him and Sonny Liston in their May of 1965 rematch reaped $956,000 at Heritage Auctions in 2015. Both sets of gloves were confiscated by the boxing commissioner after Ali knocked down Liston with a so-called “phantom punch.” Some said Ali did not connect. Liston was counted out before he got up.

Cincinnati carved cabinet, $7,380, Great Gatsby’s A Cincinnati art carved cabinet by William H. Fry sold for $7,380 at an estates auction held Oct. 14-16 by Great Gatsby’s Auction Gallery in Atlanta, Ga. The sellers were Herbert Broadfoot II and his wife, Nancy. The cabinet was commissioned as a wedding present in 1876 for Mr. Broadfoot’s great-great aunt Mary Boyd and had been passed down in the family ever since. Remarkably, the buyer was Laura Fry of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the great-great granddaughter of William H. Fry, the cabinet’s maker. The selling price includes a 23-percent buyer’s premium.

Name This Famous Person: Lucy Maud Montgomery
by Mike McLeod
Lucy Maud Montgomery was the author of Anne of Green Gables and the creator of Anne Shirley. Rejected by several publishers, it took Montgomery two years to find one willing to print her book. Then in the first five months after its publication in 1908, 19,000 copies of Anne of Green Gables sold.1 Today, more than 50 million copies in 30+ languages have made this book classic.

In 1935, King George V awarded L.M. Montgomery with the honor of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This was quite an honor for Lucy who was born, received most of her schooling, and worked as a teacher on Prince Edward Island in Canada. She became a prolific writer during her lifetime producing 20 books (including seven sequels to Anne), 500 poems and 530 short stories.2 A first edition, first printing of Anne of Green Gables sold at Bonhams in 2012 for $20,000 and another in 2015 for $21,250. The L.M. Montgomery Literary Society gives this information for collectors: “The first impression of Anne is April 1908, the second is July 1908. There were no impressions in June 1908, although later editions omit the April impression on the copyright page and list June instead. A true First Edition Anne of Green Gables means a book published by L.C. Page in April 1908.” Another way to date Anne books, the Society says, is by the prices listed after the title page: “$1.50 = 19091911; $1.65 = 1920 (49th imp); $1.75 = 1920 (50th imp); $1.90 = 1923; $2.00 = 1924-1940; $2.25 = 1944; $2.50 = 1947.”3 Maud lost her mother at a young age, was given by her father to her stern grandparents to raise, and did not get along with her father’s wife after he remarried. Born in 1874, Maud married in 1911 when she was in her mid-30s to a Presbyterian minister who later suffered horrendous mental illness. All of these factors—and undoubtedly other experiences—added up to Maud suffering from ultimately unbearable depression. She passed away on April 24, 1942 from an overdose. Part of the note found by her read: “I have lost my mind by spells and I do not dare think what I may do in those spells. May God forgive me and I hope everyone else will forgive me even if they cannot understand. My position is too awful to endure and nobody realizes it. What an end to a life in which I tried always to do my best.”4 Giving happiness to millions of people did not dispel Maud’s darkness. Even today when there are treatments for it, depression and mental illness still cause so many to suffer. Maud soldiered on to the age of 67, caring for her husband, until she could no longer bear the depression. Lucy Maud Montgomery was correctly identified by Ted Carlton of Utah, Sherron Lawson of Roswell, Ga., and Florence Anne Berna, Manager of the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau in Roswell, Ga. -------------1 Abebooks.com, “Beloved Anne of Green Gables.” 2 Continued on Page 22

The Porcelain Pipe : A Smoker’s Nightmare, A Collector’s Dream By Ben Rapaport
The bowl depicts a wild boar, and the stem is a hawk’s talon, early 20th c. (Sarunas Peckus Collection, Darius Peckus photographer).
The study of tobacco pipes in their various formats and materials is essentially an investigation into a cultural, social and behavioral branch of the social sciences. Through time, the tobacco pipe became an object of much inventive ingenuity, and it varied as greatly in material as in form: wood, horn, bone, ivory, precious stone, precious metals, amber, glass, porcelain and clay being the materials employed in various forms. Of all these materials used in the fabrication of tobacco pipes in the last 400 or so years—including the humble corncob and the briar introduced in the mid-19th century—the porcelain is the singular pipe that failed to get universal acceptance in the modern world. What’s been written about it—a European, not an American, pipe—is, surprisingly, minimal; the available information is sparse and limited to secondary sources for the earliest years of production, and almost nothing of substance has been published about the later years. Only one serious treatise in German has been
devoted to recounting almost 300 years of that country’s porcelain pipe industry, and no French book, to date, has documented the evolution of that country’s stellar porcelain pipe production. Hundreds of thousands of porcelain pipes were manufactured from the mid-1700s through the early 1920s in Germany, a lesser output in France and Austria, and a minor production in Denmark and Holland. The most respected German manufactories at the time, Königliche PorzellanManufaktur (KPM, The Royal Porcelain Factory, Berlin), Limbach, Meissen, Nymphenburg, and the French centers Chantilly, Mennecy, Saint-Omer and Sèvres and others produced porcelain tobacco boxes and snuffboxes. They soon realized that the increasing demand for fine-quality, hard-paste, handpainted pipe bowls was a merchandising opportunity not to be missed. The porcelain tobacco pipe generally associated with Germany consisted of a porcelain bowl connected to a stem and to a hollow slightly V- or U-shaped chamber of porcelain, horn or wood,

the bowl fitting into one opening of the chamber and the stem into the other opening. The purpose of the chamber, known as abguss, or reservoir, was to act as a repository for the juices and tar so as to improve the fragrance and taste of the tobacco. The stem ranged from one foot to four feet in length. Stems came in assorted mediums and degree of ornamentation, ranging from plain cherry wood to very ornate, relief-carved or turned antler, bone, ivory, wood or metal. It terminated, most often, in a mouthpiece of buffalo horn. If the bowl required a metal lid, it could have been plain simple openwork or elaborately pierced and chased…a gem of the silversmith’s craft. The height of German mass production was during the FrancoPrussian War (1870-71) when factories were commissioned to make militarythemed porcelains for those in uniform. This particular pipe, adorned with many martial symbols, was known as the Reservistenpfeife, the Reservist or Regimental pipe, a token of remembrance, a memento of military service, an element of nostalgia. In the 1950s-1970s, there was a brief manufacturing revival in Germany to replicate both the Regimental and other assorted porcelain bowls exhibiting
kitschy, touristy, commonplace themes using applied decals, but interest in collecting these waned rapidly. As to their popularity, I quote “The Pipe in Germany,” Cope’s Tobacco Plant (March 1874): “The porcelain pipe is an emblem of old ‘fatherland’ to every Teuton, when he thinks of the ‘long ago’ and the ‘old friends far away.’” According to F. W. Fairholt, Tobacco: Its History and Associations: Including an Account of the Plant and Its Manufacture; with Its Modes of Use in All Ages and Countries (1859): “These bowls are sometimes very beautifully painted, and a dealer’s stock exhibits a vast variety of subjects, sacred and profane, religious and historic, varying in price according to quality of workmanship.” Also in the Encyclopedia Americana (1840), there is this: “The fine porcelain bowls are wrought with much elegance, and are articles of very considerable luxury.” Ideas for images on pipe bowls came from a very broad expanse of inspiration: the arts, music, literature and the occurrences of daily life throughout those 100 or so years: the celebration of wars and the peace treaties; the birth, Continued on Page 20

Not unexpectedly, the Dictionnaire de la Conversation et de la Lecture (1838) boldly declared: “Sans contredit, les meilleures pipes sont les pipes de porcelaine”! (Indisputably, the best pipes are porcelain pipes!) A few years later, there is this from Germany in further defense of the porcelain appearing in Illustriertes Lexicon der gesammten Wirthschaftstunde Für alle Stände (1855): “Die von Porzellan sind die reinlichsten und gesundsten.” (Those [pipes] of porcelain are the cleanest and healthiest.) As previously mentioned, although the American pipe smoker rebuffed the porcelain, the mail order catalogs of Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Montgomery Ward in the late 1800s and early 1900s included illustrations of cheaply made, massproduced “Long German Porcelain Pipes” at the nominal price of $0.85. A careful survey of the myriad shapes, sizes, styles and symmetries of this pipe class reveals a host of spectacular exemplars. Many of these old porcelains are available on eBay, particularly eBay Germany. Offers most often are for post-1900 transfer-painted bowls of deer, dogs, hunt scenes, flower sprays and military motifs, but “da good Collum Ants.10.2009_SEA stuff’ commands exceptional prices at Continued on Page 22

Also in Nashville is the adorable antique boutique called Bits & Pieces, located at 402 Madison Street. The shop boasts antique and vintage clothing, artisan pieces and gifts. There are a few choice booth spaces available. Interested dealers my call Kim Hill at 615-218-3522. Swinging over to Cookeville, there’s Vintage Rose Antiques, located at 221 West Broad Street. The Porcelain Pipe Continued from Page 20 European auctions. Two examples suffice to prove this point. Bonhams, New Bond Street, London, conducted an auction of fine European ceramics on June 15, 2016. In it were two porcelain pipe bowls sans their respective stems and mouthpieces. Lot 164, “A Nymphenburg silver-giltmounted pipe bow, circa 1765,” with an estimate of £800–1,200 ($1,200– $1,700), sold for $1,636. Lot 169, “A Nymphenburg pipe bowl pipe bowl in the Meissen figural of a seated bear, form of Turk’s head, circa 1763,” with turned wood stem, ivory mouthpiece, an estimate of £2,500–3,500 ($3,600– c. 1750. (Sarunas Peckus Collection, $5,100), sold for $6,220. The buyers? No doubt, Continental antique pipe collectors. Darius Peckus photographer) Want to start a collection with something new instead of antique? On the other end of the price-point spectrum are contemporary-style porcelain pipes from Denmark’s Royal Copenhagen selling at a very nominal price. Or search online for porcelain pipes produced in the Czech Republic (now Czechia), a thriving center of pipe manufacture. It’s an irrefutable fact: collectively, porcelain pipes represent a veritable feast of fabulous, fantastic designs and motifs, renaissance and romance artistry and, as evidenced in these illustrations, a richly colorful accouterment of smoke devised and developed in the age of aristocratic elegance—the 18th century—and popularized in the age of industrialization—the 19th century—for use in a once-manly social pastime. However, today’s pipe smoker might conclude that the porcelain pipe is much more practical for show than for use; they are objets d’art in a collector’s display case. “Sufficient to add that, a porcelain pipe should be in the battery of every true pipe-smoker,” averred Georges Herment (The Pipe, 1954). Sixty odd years later, I am compelled to add: “...and in the battery of every true pipe collector.” -----------------If Ben Rapaport has piqued your interest, read a well-crafted, but brief, online account, “Moments. Porcelain: The Illustrated Pipe” (alpascia.com) or purchase the only English-language volume illuminating the lengthy history of this continental pipe genre written by Peckus and Rapaport, The European Porcelain Tobacco Pipe. Illustrated History for Collectors (2014). This is Ben’s eighth book on the interrelated topics of tobacco and pipes. If you own an antique porcelain pipe and desire further information about it, or tips on how to collect them, contact him at ben70gray@ gmail.com.

James D. Julia’s Lamps, Glass and Fine Jewelry Sale Highest Ever With $3.3 Million! On Nov. 18th, James D. Julia’s Fall Lamp & Glass Auction was the largest grossing lamp and glass sale in the history of the company at well over $3 million dollars. Tiffany lamps generated some incredible prices. Perhaps the most notable thing about the sale was the fact that this great success was accomplished by Mike Fredericks, Department Head of Lamp & Glass, together with Mark Ford, CEO, and the Julia team but lacking owners, Jim and Sandy Julia, both. Jim Julia has been involved in the antiques and auction business for nearly 50 years now and up until this auction, has never missed an auction. A few days prior to the auction, his wife Sandy received devastating news that she had cancer. Jim said, “Sandy had her operation on Wednesday, November 23rd, the day before Thanksgiving. We were praying and hopeful that it would be a success, and that indeed is the case. Sandy is the sweetest, most pleasant, and positive-thinking human being I have ever known, and over these past days throughout this ordeal, she has maintained her extraordinary attitude but she has also been incredibly bolstered by the well wishes, cards and emails she has received from friends everywhere. It seems as though everyone is pulling for her and it means a great deal to her.” As to the auction’s results, a Tiffany drop-head Dragonfly lamp—the most desirable of all of Tiffany’s dragonfly designs—was estimated at $120,000-180,000 but generated a jaw-dropping $515,475. This beauty featured a phenomenal reticulated base and a leaded glass shade with rich green to deep blue transitions and purple dragonfly bodies; its shade was signed “Tiffany Studios New York 1507-22. A Peony table lamp estimated at $150,000-250,000 made $391,050. This world-class example had an untouched, rare Mosaic Turtleback
base and a red, pink, white, blue and green leaded glass shade signed, “Tiffany Studios New York 1505-25.” A Poppy table lamp on a bronze cattail lily pond base estimated at $50,00070,000 realized $219,225. Its shade, signed “Tiffany Studios New York 1531-3,” featured an outstanding, multi-colored background, leaves of confetti, and rippled and mottled glass on a most desirable base. Other Tiffany lighting highlights included: a peony table lamp that was estimated at $60,000-80,000 and made $71,100; a daffodil table lamp that was estimated at $45,000-65,000 and bloomed at $56,288; and a turtleback lantern that was estimated at $22,000-26,000 and went for $36,735. The Galle offerings in this sale, many featuring floral themes, also proved quite attractive to buyers. A marquetry crocus vase, one of the most sought-after Galle pieces of all time, realized $52,733. Tiffany metal wear made a highly decorative appearance in this sales event. Beverage pots were a key category here, and a signed, mixed metal Japanese style hot cocoa pot estimated at $10,000-15,000 realized $40,290. James D. Julia has already started gathering consignments for the next Lamps, Glass, and Fine Jewelry sale, scheduled for June 2017. For more information on James D. Julia, Inc. and the fine Lamps, Glass, and Fine Jewelry division, visit www. jamesdjulia.com. Tiffany Studios Drop-Head Dragonfly table lamp, $515,475.
