RESORT & RESIDENCES

Construction began on the Main Building for the Antognolla Resort in the spring of 2023. This marvellous structure, designed by the British-Australian architectural bureau Woods Bagot with interiors by the Japanese Studio SPIN, will be situated on a hill overlooking the charming 12th-century Antognolla castle, establishing harmony between the timeless and the contemporary. Italian company SACAIM, which is part of the Rizzani de Eccher group is managing the construction, with local companies from the province of Perugia, including Fagiolari of Città della Pieve, also involved in the project as subcontractors. Once ready, this bright and elegant building will sit amidst mesmerising nature, housing the resort’s reception, suites, spa, swimming pools, and other recreational facilities that will breathe life into the resort. All the rooms are designed with materials that are natural, plastic-free, and, where possible, sourced locally. Benvenuti in paradiso.

ABOUT THE MAIN BUILDING

• 16,000 square metres

• Multiple floors

• 40 modern suites

• Sustainable design registered with LEED* *Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

The Main Building is located in what we call the New Borgo, an upscale and modern space, which is connected to the Old Borgo, home to Antognolla castle. Guests will be able to choose between a contemporary stay at the Main Building or a more classic and sumptuous experience in one of the castle’s 16 suites. The New and Old Borgo are walking distance away from each other, and combined with our Golf Clubhouse, Ristorante La Boiola, and dining options, guests will be able to enjoy the freedom that comes with being in a tranquil and secluded environment, elegantly designed with their satisfaction in mind.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO HIT AN ACE ON ITALY'S BEST GOLF COURSE THIS SEASON?

Antognolla Golf has been named ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’ by the World Golf Awards twice, in 2020 and 2022, and has once again been nominated for the 2023 award. The final winners will be announced in October 2023 at the 10th annual World Golf Awards ceremony.

Antognolla Golf Club hosts dozens of tournaments every year, including the annual Antognolla Open, which marks its 6th edition this September.

To further enrich Antognolla Golf’s offering, we made a brilliant hire in March this year with seasoned golf sales expert Laura Bortolato joining our team as Golf Sales Manager. Laura is widely recognised and highly experienced within both the Italian golf sector and the international golf tourism industry. DINING

When Antognolla Resort cuts its ribbon, our guests will have a diverse selection of dining options, with eclectic flavours curated from all over the world. European and Asian dishes will garnish the plates of those eager to try exquisite and exclusive recipes.

There is one restaurant, however, that has been serving our golfers and other guests from the start — none other than our cherished La Boiola, which has seen more toasts and smiles, and heard more fork clinks and mutterings of ‘mmm buonissimo’ than any other venue on these secluded hills.

With its selection of homegrown ingredients and locally inspired recipes, La Boiola is continuously exploring new flavours and crafting seasonal menus and novel experiences for its guests. La Boiola’s new chef, Filippo Amenduni – a graduate of Università dei Sapori, Perugia’s ‘University of Flavours’ – has already made his mark, mixing gastronomic tradition with delectable elements of surprise.

FLAVOURS

Delizioso!Buono!Eccellente! There are likely more ways to say ‘delicious’ in Italian than in any other language and not without good reason. The delightful flavour of Italy’s dishes is attributed not only to recipes being passed down from generations, but also to the favourable climate which blesses locally grown ingredients.

Reserve a table at La Boiola to taste Antognolla’s olive oil straight from our homegrown olive trees, which are taken care of by the experienced hands of local farmers. Just last year, Antognolla milled over 500kg of olives.

But what is an oil-kissed appetiser without a proper glass of wine? This past spring, Antognolla completed the final phase of the installation of its grapevines with the assistance of the renowned Umbrian oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. We are expecting our first harvest of Chardonnay grape variety in 2023, and plan to make the first toast with our Umbrian wine together in 2026, when our red and Chardonnay varieties will be ready.

TO

BORN Golf

The 6,112-meter Antognolla Golf Course enjoys the reputation of being one of Italy’s most spectacular and most challenging golf courses. The 18-hole course is currently nominated ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’ at the WGA, having won twice already in previous years.

10

ANTOGNOLLA GOLF

Designed by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., the 6,112-metre Antognolla Golf Course enjoys the reputation of being one of Italy’s most spectacular and most challenging courses. The 18-hole course, twice awarded as ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’ at the World Golf Awards, was originally built in 1997 but has seen a multi-million-euro investment since 2018. A new irrigation and drainage system along with a computer-controlled moisture management system were installed in 2020 to make the course playable year-round and more sustainable. The bunkers were redesigned using the latest capillary concrete technology, while polymers were used for the reconstruction of the cart path to create a smooth, natural-looking route — something which had never been done before on a European golf course.

A new upgrade is on the way: the Golf Clubhouse. Imagine a modern structure complementing Antognolla’s historical architecture: a reception area surrounded by glass walls overlooking a fabulous golf course.

Along with technology and architecture, sustainability is a central feature of the Antognolla Resort and Golf Course. The Antognolla Golf Course is GEO-certified, a certification granted to environmentally sustainable and socially responsible projects that help conserve nature, save resources, and contribute to climate action.

Noteworthy is Antognolla’s water conservation system through which rainwater is collected in man-made lakes and then reused to irrigate the golf course (and the resort, in the future). Every plant designated for the resort’s landscaping will be indigenous, guaranteeing seamless integration with the surrounding natural habitat.

Antognolla takes a holistic approach to sustainability through the use of renewable energy, energy-efficient systems, and its waste and water management system. When the resort is complete, guests will also be able to engage in a host of other outdoor activities and fully appreciate the incredible nature at the heart of Antognolla.

INSIDE ANTOGNOLLA: A GLIMPSE AT THE FUTURE GOLF CLUBHOUSE

With perfection as its goal, Antognolla remains committed to raising the bar for excellence in the world of golf. As part of the Golf Clubhouse, a new, larger golf reception centre will cater to the growing number of guests and golf enthusiasts, housing changing rooms, a pro-shop and storage rooms across two levels. The iconic La Boiola restaurant, part of the golf complex, will also undergo a transformation, preserving its century-old charm while blending harmoniously with the new structure nearby.

Designed by Woods Bagot, the new reception centre will be fully transparent, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful panorama overlooking the historic castle. The modern and minimalist design of the building will complement the charming historical structures, acting as a serene backdrop upon which the vista of the medieval castle will stand out.

To be constructed using local materials such as terracotta tiles for the roofs and native stone from the same quarry as the existing walls of the old building, the Golf Clubhouse will seamlessly blend tradition and innovation.

Additionally, guests will be able to access the reception building directly from the underground parking garage, to provide the utmost comfort.

A fresh 3,000-square-meter training zone is also in the works. Known as the Social Green training area, it will provide a practice haven for both seasoned players and novices. Additionally, it will offer specialised services, refreshments, live music, and entertainment.

Another essential addition to the transformation is the new Golf Maintenance Building. In 2023, it was constructed using 7,200 terracotta tiles for the floor and 6,338 tiles for the roof, showcasing meticulous attention to detail. The new building will increase the size of the training area and provide premises for the staff who maintain the golf course.

Respecting the site’s rich historical heritage, Antognolla Golf’s designers strive to preserve its authentic character while delivering modern comfort for its guests. The Golf Clubhouse is expected to open its doors within the next two years.

OLIVES Wine&

THE TRUE TASTE OF UMBRIA

For centuries, the rich soils of Umbria have been a source of pride and sustenance for the local people. Situated in the heart of the Italian Peninsula, Umbria presents a variety of landscapes, ranging from expansive plains and rolling hills to picturesque valleys, plateaus, and majestic mountain ranges. The combination of the climate and favourable environmental conditions fosters the cultivation of local products rich in texture and flavour. The region produces some of the finest products that Italy has to offer — with olives and wines taking centre stage as the true jewels in this culinary crown.

OLIVE OIL: THE REGION’S LIQUID GOLD

Olive oil, often referred to as the ‘liquid gold of Umbria,’ is yet another defining symbol of the region, with many of Umbria’s beautiful hills blanketed in silvery green olive groves.

Olive oil was first introduced to Umbria by the Etruscans, and it experienced remarkable development during the Roman Age. In 1998, Umbria was the first Italian region to be awarded the quality label known as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) by the European Union for the extra virgin olive oil produced throughout the territory. The principal cultivars in Umbria are Moraiolo, Frantoio and Leccino. Traditionally, the olive harvesting season is October-November.

Starting in 2018, Antognolla has been creating its own high-quality olive oil from a grove of 500 olive trees that have been rooted on the estate for many years. Some of the older olive groves had previously been abandoned and neglected, prompting the estate’s management to initiate a restoration process in order to get the trees into optimal condition and ensure fruitful olive harvests for future oil production.

Last year Antognolla milled more than 500kg of olives. Guests at the resort have the opportunity to not only savour locally crafted olive oil at the La Boiola restaurant but also purchase it to bring home.

12

“The features of the Antognolla area are ideal for the production of great red wines and classic-method sparkling wines for long ageing. The soil, which is well prepared, has ideal physical and chemical characteristics for obtaining wines of rare quality... In my long experience around the world, I have never experienced soils so rich in limestone and potassium. These elements are fundamental to the high goals that Antognolla has set itself.”

THE HIDDEN GEM

ANTOGNOLLA AND THE WINE LEGACY OF UMBRIA

Umbria, a hidden gem in the world of wine, has long remained a well-kept secret. Yet, behind its unassuming appearance lies an impressive array of offerings that captivate the senses.

Antognolla Resort and Residences is working to make the most of this enchanting wine region, which encapsulates the very essence of Umbria’s terroir. The resort not only offers guests a high end stay but also presents wine tasting and vineyard-related activities. For Antognolla, winemaking is far more than just a business — it is part of a broader vision to preserve the local heritage and promote the unique culture of Umbria.

To ensure the utmost excellence in winemaking, Antognolla joined forces with the renowned oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. With an illustrious

career dating back to 1979, Mr Cotarella has been instrumental in cultivating a wide array of old and new wine varieties in Umbria and Lazio, earning international acclaim for his efforts.

The collaboration between Antognolla and Mr Cotarella began two years ago with the goal of restoring old plots and installing vineyards across approximately 8 hectares of land. The carefully chosen grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, hold the promise of creating fine wines.

With the installation of the vineyards now reaching its final phase, Antognolla will have its first red grape variety in 2024. The first bottles of Merlot and sparkling Chardonnay wine are expected to mature and be ready to clink in 2026.

Q&A CÉSAR BURGUIÈRE

A Conversation with César Burguière, Director of Golf at Antognolla

César Burguière’s list of accomplishments is a long one. One does not need to look at his resume to understand his contribution to golf, but rather simply play the course at Antognolla and see it in reality. César joined Antognolla as Director of Golf in November 2017. At that time, the golf course — a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design which opened for play in 1997 — was in very poor condition and needed serious investment to place it at the level that such a historic backdrop in the shape of Antognolla castle deserves.

Under César’s supervision and with the support of the owner, Antognolla underwent extensive reforms, earning it the WGA title of ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’ twice and putting Umbria on the global golf map.

Antognolla is not the first golf course that César developed, but it is the one he crafted and continues to upgrade after gaining a lifetime of experience in the industry. In Antognolla, he saw unique potential, and with the hard work of his team, and the ambitious vision of the owner, he is developing one of the best golf projects in Europe.

César’s Experience in the Golf Industry

César started working as a golf professional with teaching during his university years in Valencia before getting into golf retail. Once he graduated, he began working for a golf shop, Golf USA. Seeking to develop the brand, the owner made César responsible for all operations and together they opened five shops in the course of three years.

Following this, César completed a postgraduate program at Les Roches Marbella International School of Hotel Management — ranked within the top 4 in the world for hospitality and leisure studies. His first position after that was at Troon Golf, the first luxury operating management company for golf courses. At the time, Troon was working in Morocco with the Doha group, and required a French-speaking retail manager to assist with one of their properties. With his experience working in golf retail, he qualified for the role and subsequently spent just over a year in North Africa before relocating to Troon’s international office in Geneva as Office Manager.

He went to Morocco because of Vision 2020, and as a French speaker, was able to assist with the project that the company envisioned there. Alongside working in Morocco and Geneva, he has also consulted on the development of golf facilities in France and Spain, and developed and managed budgets, business plans, and retail agreements for courses all over Europe. In 2011, he became Golf Operations Manager at Costa Navarino in Greece before moving to Director of Golf at Lumine Golf and Beach Club, a 45-hole course designed by Greg Norman in Spain.

If his experience wasn’t enough, César’s charm and fluency in four languages (French, Spanish, English, Italian) is a bonus when it comes to Antognolla’s international partnerships. With his ideas, extensive network, and work ethic, he has achieved remarkable growth for the course and has established relationships with renowned personalities in sport, fashion, and culture, in Italy and abroad.

César remains in constant motion, as he is fully engrossed in the daily hands-on running of the golf course. Fortunately, we managed to capture a glimpse into his day-to-day.

Meet César Burguière, the face of Antognolla Golf...

You’ve worked for golf clubs all over Europe. How did you decide to relocate to Italy?

I was approached by Antognolla in 2017, and I saw the enormous potential an opportunity like this could have. I thought it would be a wise move to relocate to Italy, especially since I knew that the Ryder Cup would be taking place in Rome.

My job has given me the opportunity to live in different countries, experience incredible cultures, and meet amazing people. This is something I love about my work. In Italy, I not only get to re-structure a golf course, but to be part of the exciting development of the country’s golf industry before, during, and after the Ryder Cup.

WhatisadayinthelifeofCésarBurguière?

My role is an incredibly active one. In the morning, I usually go on the course and review all the maintenance work that is being done. I have a chat with the superintendent who briefs me on the programme of the day. After that, I go into the office to answer emails, get up to speed with bookings, and deal with the administrative side of things. Then comes the fun part — training the golf staff so that our service standards are continuously raised. The staff is taking on more and more responsibilities and we are really evolving as a business. In the past, we had very few rounds, no booking centre and no computerised systems. But now we’re implementing changes to upgrade the golfer experience at Antognolla.

The second part of the day is dedicated to the management of the restaurant La Boiola, which is part of the golf complex. Developing a restaurant in Italy, where the cuisine is internationally recognised, has been very exciting — and delicious! We created a concept in accordance with the golf strategy. During the day, I always try to make time to have an aperitivo and a chat with our guest golfers and members.

What is it like living in Umbria?

It’s wonderful. Umbria is not at all polluted, the environment is pure and the air is fresh. It’s beautiful, and wherever you go the gastronomy is highly satisfying and the people are extremely nice. I very much enjoy living here and working here. I don’t think there is an office in the world with a view like Antognolla’s. I get to answer my emails amidst tranquil natural scenery and a medieval castle that makes one think about eternity. Coming to Antognolla will raise anyone’s level of gratitude and feeling of presence with themselves.

What has it been like to develop Antognolla Golf?

The golf course has seen immense improvement since November 2017 when I joined. We hired new associates and created our core team. I think it is fair to say the team and I have invested sweat and tears into the project, and we are working exceptionally hard to provide a service

that is above any standard in Italy. We are very much aware that there is still room for improvement and while it is true that we’re not yet finished with the infrastructure or facilities, we always remain focused on maintaining a high level of service, since we understand that this is fundamental for ensuring repeat business.

We are also working towards hosting highly acclaimed international golf events. Antognolla is already becoming the place to be, and that’s a major achievement considering that Umbria, or Italy even, has not traditionally been considered a golf destination.

Can you tell us about the work at the Golf Clubhouse that is currently underway at Antognolla?

The clubhouse has been designed to be very efficient operationally, and fully integrated within this incredible landscape. At other facilities, it is quite usual to see reduced operational efficiency in the clubhouse, as there is no golf expertise involved during the design stages. We had the chance to come in early during Antognolla’s development so we were able to provide important input on the overall design of the golf facilities.

The clubhouse will be a contemporary and welcoming club, providing a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere where guests and members can enjoy their time with friends, family, and business colleagues. The clubhouse’s elegant golf restaurant will offer an exceptional dining experience with a warm ambience and attentive hospitality to complement the course.

What sorts of brands will guests be able to find at the Antognolla Golf Shop?

We are already collaborating with some of the top brands in the golf apparel and lifestyle industries. We’re looking at potentially having some distinct apparel from the region, mainly from globally recognised local luxury cashmere brands in order to provide guests with an authentic and unique shopping experience.

How do you envision the future of golf in Italy?

I’d say that the transformation of Italy as a golf destination is already underway. The golf infrastructure is increasing and will be a key driver of growth for golf tourism. Antognolla is currently leading the way with its unique offering. The Ryder Cup is the third most important sporting event after the World Cup and the Olympic Games — and for only the third time in history, the European leg will be leaving the British Isles to take place in Italy, paving the way for the creation of an Italian golf legacy. I think international golfers should consider Italy as their next golfing destination, as it is truly a hidden gem for golf, and in addition to that, guests will enjoy gastronomy, culture, and incredible beauty.

Q LAURA BORTOLATO

It’s a rainy day at Antognolla, but that stops nobody from playing golf, and certainly not Laura Bortolato, who walks confidently by the course, embodying her new position as Golf Sales Manager. In her white polo shirt and navy-blue windbreaker, and with an intense gaze, she fits the part. After all, for Laura, golf is not only a game but a way of living.

‘I was initially drawn to the world of golf through a profound sense of connection to the sport as not only a practice but also a lifestyle. I was captivated by the elegance, grace, and precision that golf itself and golf management demanded’, she says.

It is no coincidence that after a thriving 25 years working for private clubs and resorts, including Pevero Golf Club when it was part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Vigne del Barolo under Troon Golf management, and Castiglion del Bosco when owned by Ferragamo, Laura has now chosen Antognolla Golf. She joined in March 2023.

At this stage in her career, Laura will settle for nothing less than ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’. An established professional, her decision to join the Antognolla team is not only about prestige. ‘From the moment I first set foot on the property, I was captivated by its undeniable charm and unparalleled beauty’, she says. ‘Antognolla boasts a golf course that is nothing short of a masterpiece.’

Staying focused for a round of golf becomes all the more difficult with the location’s stunning green scenery. Beauty becomes part of the challenge at Antognolla. That’s yet another reason to visit since, according to Laura, ‘golf has undeniably made its mark on the list of Italian wonders’. Ready for a round?

What attracted you to the golf industry?

When I stepped onto a golf course for the first time, I felt I had entered an atmosphere that was simultaneously dynamic and overwhelmingly tranquil. I had never experienced such a sensation before. After that, golf became my sanctuary, a place where I could immerse myself in a world of camaraderie, strategy, and personal growth.

Embarking on my journey in the golf resort industry has been a remarkable adventure. Every day, I experience first-hand the profound impact golf has on individuals’ lives. The emotions that bind us to this sport are truly extraordinary, whether it’s the pure elation on a player’s face after sinking a crucial putt or the genuine friendships that form over

a round. Through my love for golf and hospitality, I now aim to craft unforgettable experiences where guests can indulge in the beauty of nature, connect with fellow golf enthusiasts, discover their true potential, and feel those exhilarating emotions that can only be felt on a course.

WhenpeoplethinkofItaly, theythinkofhistory, picturesquelandscapes, and delicious flavors. But what about golf?

Italy’s golfing scene has grown exponentially in recent years, attracting both professional golfers and enthusiasts from around the world. The country’s commitment to developing top-notch facilities and hosting prestigious tournaments has elevated its status in the global golfing community, and is garnering the world’s attention, especially with the Ryder Cup taking place in Rome this year.

From the picturesque coastal fairways and rolling hills of Umbria and Tuscany, to the mountain courses in the North of Italy, the country’s golf courses offer a unique blend of natural beauty and architectural genius. All in all, Italy offers an irresistible package to golfers. Beyond the courses themselves, golf in Italy is also accompanied by the country’s renowned hospitality, exquisite local cuisine, fascinating history, and enchanting traditions. I think that golf will become a captivating addition to the country’s treasures in no time.

What influenced your decision to join the team at Antognolla?

One of the key aspects that drew me to Antognolla is the ambition of the project, the company’s structure and development, combined with the fact that in such a short amount of time, Antognolla Golf has managed to earn the title of ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’. The resort is nestled within the historic Antognolla castle estate, which dates back centuries and carries an incredible sense of heritage. Being part of a place that has witnessed such significant moments in time and embodies the essence of Italian culture is truly inspiring to me.

The team at Antognolla is deeply committed to providing a personalised and memorable experience for every guest, ensuring they feel welcomed, cared for, and truly valued. This dedication to creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere resonated with me and aligned perfectly with my own values. The team’s hospitality and meticulous attention to detail and the course’s strategic layout and impeccable conditioning make playing and working at Antognolla Golf a true delight.

What do you enjoy about your job?

A workday for me is dynamic and filled with exciting opportunities thanks to the global and creative nature of my role. One of the most thrilling aspects of my work is being at the forefront of original projects and initiatives, whether it’s exploring creative marketing strategies or implementing new guest experiences. I’ve particularly enjoyed working with the team to organise a special event for Antognolla Golf’s friends at the Ryder Cup, which, for the first time, is taking place in Italy. Bringing an experience like this one to life required lots of organisation, coordination, and creativity.

I also find immense gratification in working in a global context which allows me to interact with partners and clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and broadens my understanding of different markets. This international exposure provides me with unique perspectives on golf, its global history, and the different ways it is enjoyed around the world.

What is your most memorable golf story?

More than just memorable, this is one of the funniest moments I have ever experienced in golf. For some people, the pressure of the game is simply too much to handle. They go into fits of rage, throwing clubs or cursing and swearing. One member of a previous club where I worked threw his entire set of clubs into a water hazard after a terrible round. He then came to the clubhouse to ask the staff members to pull his bag out of the water. Upon receiving his bag, he removed his wallet, and then tossed the clubs back into the water!

A Golf Academy led by a GOLF CHAMPION

There’s a secret among golfers at Antognolla: a location on the course that promises the most spectacular views. But if there is one person who discovered it first, its Zeke Martinez, a man who knows the golf course inside out.

‘My favourite spot at Antognolla is the tee at the 13th hole. You’re sitting up on top of the tee and you’re looking all about the golf course. You can see the castle in the background. It’s a very nice spot to be’ – to say the least.

Zeke has been the Head of the Golf Academy at Antognolla since 2021, but he has been practising there for much longer. ‘I chose Antognolla to practise because it was an 18-hole golf course and it was a good challenge’, says Zeke, who before joining Antognolla was running the 9-hole Lamborghini golf course in Umbria, which he built and designed.

‘When you play the golf course at Antognolla, you are never in a flat area. You have uphill, side-hill, downhill positions that you need to hit the shots to the greens, and

that actually gave me a good variety of swings and options. There’s a lot of different positions that Antognolla Golf Club allows you to learn.’

Originally from Glendale, California, Zeke moved to Italy 22 years ago. He has played golf on just about every surface, in just about every country, from the United States to Italy and Japan, and in a number of languages. A Pro-Am Champion (Aegean Airlines International), three-time PGA Italian Club Professional Champion and three-time Italian PGA Senior Champion, he was also a part of the Japan PGA Tour(1991–1993), the South American Tour (1998–2021), and the European Senior Tour (2012-2015), among others.

According to Zeke, he owes his career to one person: his best friend, who introduced him to golf during his teenage years with a visit to Long Beach, California. Later, a public golf course opened next to Zeke’s childhood home, giving him the opportunity to practice without limits. Not only is he a professional golfer now, but he also helps others improve their game.

At the Academy, Zeke teaches golfers of all levels, from professionals to families seeking to learn how to play golf together. Golfers can select one of Antognolla’s multiple-class packages. Both members and non-members can take lessons. Members of the golf club can practise with free range balls that come as part of their membership. Antognolla Golf also uses the most up-to-date technology like Trackman, an apparatus which measures swing parameters, and Capto, top putting software.

But more than the amenities, it’s the people and the golfers who make the golf course, and Zeke is determined to keep his students playing even when the game gets tough. ‘Golf is like a rollercoaster ride’, he says. ‘My advice is to never give up. There are times when you would just like to break the club that you have in your hands because golf is a difficult sport, but you have to have patience with yourself.’ The view from the 13th tee certainly helps with that.

“When you play the golf course at Antognolla, you are never in a flat area. You have uphill, side-hill, downhill positions that you need to hit the shots to the greens, and that actually gave me a good variety of swings and options. There’s a lot of different positions that Antognolla Golf Club allows you to learn.”

Hidden Corners PIETRO PERUGINO

FROM PERUGIA TO THE WORLD: UNVEILING THE ACCLAIMED UMBRIAN RENAISSANCE

Five centuries after his final brushstroke graced the enchanting Perugian countryside, the renowned Italian Renaissance artist Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, affectionately known as il Perugino, reemerged this year in a dedicated exhibition at the National Gallery of Umbria.

Perugino, born as Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, emerged as a prominent figure in the art world during the latter half of the fifteenth century and continued to captivate until the early decades of the sixteenth century. Among Italy’s finest and most distinctive painters of the era, his style transcended him into an icon, influencing a cadre of pupils. Foremost among them was Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael, whose initial career saw close alignment with his master’s approach.

Running from March 4th to June 11th, 2023, the exhibition at the National Gallery of Umbria showcased works produced prior to 1505, marking the pinnacle of Perugino’s creative zenith. The museum’s halls were brought to life with Perugino’s masterful strokes, including renowned pieces like the Marriage of the Virgin, The Conflict between Love and Chastity, the exquisite Galitzin triptych, and other treasures sourced from esteemed global museums, such as the Louvre, London’s National Gallery, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Over three months, the National Gallery of Umbria radiated with a distinct luminance, illuminated by the artist’s refined and elegant palette.

Born in 1450 in Città della Pieve, an idyllic and picturesque village around a half-hour from Perugia, Perugino’s legacy thrives through various works in his hometown. The acclaimed Adoration of the Magi is among them. The village itself pays homage to its illustrious native through an exhibition spotlighting the triumphs of his creations, featuring the Adoration of the Magi and the Baptism of Christ. This display welcomes visitors until September 30th, 2023.

Perugino’s artistic tutelage unfolded alongside notable contemporaries like Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli, under the guidance of Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. This renowned workshop became his home during the early 1470s. It was within these walls that his “Florentine” comrades first christened him with the moniker Perugino,

inspired by his origins near Perugia. His ascendancy was swift: by 1481, he undertook the adornment of the Sistine Chapel’s side walls. Collaborating with other eminent painters, he cemented his reputation and showcased his formidable organisational prowess. This period saw Perugino’s ascendancy gather momentum, transforming him into a sought-after master throughout Italy. Under his stewardship, two industrious workshops flourished, where numerous apprentices honed their craft under his guidance.

The zenith of Perugino’s acclaim spanned the late fifteenth to early sixteenth centuries. During this era, his talents were enlisted by the foremost patrons of the Renaissance. In 1493, he wedded his muse, Chiara Fancelli, the daughter of a renowned architect, who infused his Madonnas with a sweet and harmonious essence.

From 1504, a new chapter in his journey unfolded. His artistic output withdrew from the grand Italian cities, returning to the quaint and alluring villages of Umbria. Within these unexpected havens, one can encounter his extraordinary masterpieces.

Perugino’s uniqueness resides in his harmonious style, epitomising Renaissance principles. His figures mirror classical statuary, composition exudes symmetry, and his characters’ beauty approaches a concept of ideal perfection. As if standing on the cusp of flawlessness, he stood as an iconic creator of his time, laying the foundation for the future geniuses of Italy’s grand artistic epic in the sixteenth century.

In the words of writer and art critic John Ruskin: ‘Perugino’s world is devoid of darkness or error. Each hue is alluring, every expanse suffused with light. The universe takes on a divine essence; all sorrow melds into universal harmony, every melancholy into tranquility.’

THE

WONDERS UMBRIA OF

Despite being one of the smallest regions of Italy, Umbria not only delights visitors with its delicious gastronomy but also presents an opportunity to explore historical monuments that have been recognised as world heritage sites. The UNESCO sites located in Umbria are divided into two groups: Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco and the other Franciscan sites; and Places of Power associated with the Lombards in Italy (568–774 AD).

ASSISI, THE BASILICA OF SAN FRANCESCO & OTHER FRANCISCAN SITES

INCLUDES FIVE SITES

Assisi, a medieval city built on a hill, is known as the birthplace of St Francis, the founder of the Franciscan order. Assisi is situated on a spur of Monte Subasio at an elevation of 400 metres and overlooks the valleys of the Topino and Chiascio rivers.

The town’s most notable landmark is the Basilica of San Francesco (St Francis), construction of which began in 1228 and was completed in 1253. The two-storey basilica consists of an upper church and a lower church. The crypt in the lower church was added in 1818 when the tomb of St Francis was opened. The basilica is considered to be one of the greatest repositories of early Renaissance fresco painting in Italy.

LOMBARDS IN ITALY: PLACES OF POWER

568-774 A.D

This historic site consists of seven religious buildings, including fortresses, churches and monasteries, in five regions of Italy. Two of the buildings — the Tempietto del Clitunno and the Basilica di San Salvatore — are located in Umbria.

These buildings were built by the Lombards, a people of Germanic origin who converted to Christianity. They migrated from Northern Europe and developed their own specific culture in Italy, where they ruled over vast territories from the 6th to 8th centuries. The Lombards display an original blend of classical culture, Byzantine influences and the fundamental values of the Germanic world.

The Basilica di San Salvatore is a historic church located in Spoleto. It dates back to the 4th century AD and is one of the oldest surviving Christian structures in the area. Originally, the basilica was part of a larger complex that included a monastery. It was likely built on the site of an ancient Roman temple. Over the centuries, the church underwent several renovations and additions, reflecting different architectural styles, including Romanesque and Gothic elements.

Another UNESCO-protected site in the region is the Tempietto del Clitunno, a small temple located in Pissignano along the slopes of Colle San Benedetto, which dominates the Spoleto Valley. It is considered one of the most interesting early-medieval monuments in Umbria.

The structure, which was built with reused architectural elements from ancient Roman times, takes the form of a small classical temple: it stands on a high podium with a frontal Corinthian colonnade of four columns supporting the entablature, on which there is an inscription dedicating the temple to the ‘God of the Angels’.

LOVE, TRUFFLES, & FAMILY

MEET THE LOCALS

EMBRACING THE POETIC BEAUTY OF A TIMELESS ITALIAN LIFESTYLE

In the charming village of Pettino, nestled amidst the breathtaking Apennine Mountains of Umbria, a love story unfolded that spanned continents and generations.

More than three decades ago, Mac Ryde, originally from New Zealand, set out on a journey of self-discovery, exploring the world with just a backpack and an open heart. Eventually, his path led him to a small village in Umbria called Pettino, where he met the love of his life, Francesca Chiacchiarini.

This encounter marked the beginning of a lifelong romance with Francesca and with the region. After marrying Francesca and becoming an integral part of her family farm, Mac embraced the essence of the Italian countryside and found himself transitioning from a foreigner to a local.

26

THE FAMILY FARM

Pettino is a small, ancient village located over 1,100 metres above sea level, surrounded by Umbria’s stunning Apennine Mountains. Francesca’s family has called Pettino home since 1486 and still maintains a traditional way of living. The family farm spans 1,000 hectares of land, boasting lush olive groves, fertile pastures, and abundant truffles. Here, traditions and community are paramount, with the villagers forming one big family. Sheep farming, wool production, and truffle hunting are integral to their way of life.

For many years, the family in Pettino has shared truffle hunting experiences with visitors from all over the world. Their Black Truffle Lodge and Pettino Country Experience introduce travellers to a countryside way of life, where visitors find themselves immersed in rustic authenticity. The experience offers a genuine connection with the local people and their centuries-old customs. Guests can participate in truffle hunts, shepherding, and cheese-making, and they can also savour the delight of freshly made pasta and homemade wine.

A POETIC IMMERSION IN AUTHENTIC UMBRIA

Mac says life in Pettino is ‘very archaic, poetic’, and there is nothing pretentious in what the family offers their guests.

‘We take people around and do the things we do on a daily basis. The experience we offer is really very natural and very authentic. It’s not just truffle hunting and lunch, it’s a full immersion into the Umbrian country way of living’, he said in an interview with Antognolla Magazine.

‘There's a lot of talk about truffles around the world. They’re thought of as very rare and crazy expensive. But here in Umbria they’re just part of everyday life, and that’s what we want to show people’, he explained.

Pettino’s allure lies in its timeless beauty and its people’s warm embrace of the simple pleasures in life. Mac’s advice to visitors echoes the sentiment shared by the locals: to immerse oneself fully in the experience, to take time, and to let go of the need to rush.

‘Just take your time to enjoy it. You don’t need any special technique to enjoy a place like this. You’re not rushing around – “I need to see that museum” or “I want to see that church”. Forget about all of that’, he added. ‘Just let things happen the way they do. It’s just such an amazing place to be absorbed into.’

The village is approximately 1h15 from Antognolla by car.

“Umbria gives a real sense of timelessness. It has its own rhythm, which is not a fast, full-speedahead rhythm. You are surrounded by sociable, pleasant people in a beautiful setting, and you find yourself in a place where people still appreciate a natural way of living, family, food, and wine.”
