we are past the very worst of the declines. The real debate now is about the speed and strength of the recovery.” David predicts the industry will probably experience a “relatively slow and weak recovery”. The strength of the rand, he adds, has helped Cathay during the recent months by helping to make up the revenue shortfall. Yields, says Qantas manager Africa, Michi Messner, will be an immediate area of focus. “We have reduced the number of tactical fare campaigns with a view to stabilising the fares between SA and Australia and focus on our yield.” Michi says it is too early to conclude that we’ve reached the bottom but that the airline, like its counterparts, is seeing

positive signs in the “near future”. “We are noticing a significant change in forward bookings with consumers booking further in advance, whereas more recently, consumers tended to wait for last-minute specials.” “Forward booking for the Christmas period is looking very strong,” adds David. Air France KLM meanwhile has taken a bullish stance about the SA route. “This is why we keep on investing and will deploy our most advanced and environmentally friendly aircraft, the A380, from February 4 on the JNB route, with a slight increase in seat capacity. This aircraft is likely to remain on the Johannesburg-Paris route after the World Cup as well.” n

E’RE over the worst but not out of the woods. The freefall decline in BSP ZA sales recorded this year appears to have levelled out with October showing a 19,7% drop in sales in this market. This is compared with the 21% drop seen in September, the 28% in August and the low point in May when sales in 2009 were 33% lower than in May 2008.
