outhern African Tourism Update followed South African Tourism and SATSA down the Southern Cape coast recently for an initiative that the organisations’ are calling Speed Marketing. Locally-based tour operators are escorted to the district of choice and local tourism suppliers are given a five-minute opportunity to present their property in the hopes that the tour operators will take up offering the product to their clients.

Ma Betty’s Xhosa Cultural Experience This cultural experience offered outside of Oudtshoorn in the Bongolethu Township offers its visitors the chance to experience local Xhosa culture. Guests will be entertained by a traditional story teller as well as a troupe of Xhosa dancers. The village does offer accommodation and traditional meals. Accommodation is very basic in keeping with the theme of the villages and guests will be made comfortable on grass mats in a traditional hut. For honeymoon guests and couples, cultural wedding ceremonies can be arranged. Transfers are offered at additional costs from the Oudtshoorn Tourism office. Monkeyland and Birds of Eden Based just 20km outside of Plettenberg Bay, both these sanctuaries offer guests the chance to experience free-roaming primates and birds that were once kept in captivity. At Monkeyland, guests can join a onehour safari where they could expect to see a large variety of monkeys, apes and lemurs. Birds of Eden covers two-hectares of land covered with thin wire mesh where guests can traverse elevated walkways and take in the forest and waterfalls. Art, Cheese, Chocolate and Liqueur Route This foodie route based in Oudtshoorn offers the best culinary delights the town has to offer. The route was developed by four suppliers based within short driving distance of one another and can be completed in just two hours. It visits Rococo, a Belgian chocolatier; Grundheim, an award-winning distillery; Tantinki, a goat’s milk dairy; and Moooi, an art gallery that also offers selfcatering luxury accommodation and gift shop. Cango Ostrich Show Farm En route to the famous Cango Caves, this show farm gives insight to its guests about these strange and wonderful birds. There is a large ostrich farming contigent in this part of the world, but this property is more geared towards tourists. Guests can get up close to the birds and will have the opportunity to see chicks hatching in incubators. They also boast the world’s friendliest, kissable ostrich, Stoffie. Meals can be arranged in small houses that have been converted for groups and a small amphitheatre can cater for shows from local talent groups.
