The Birds and the Bees of Muscle Cars

The Plymouth Road Runner and the Dodge Super Bee were two premiere muscle cars from the 60s, both designed to deliver fast, elegant performance affordably. Chrysler was the responsible party in production of these vehicles, and their popularity has established them as classic sports cars of the pony car golden era.

The Plymouth Road Runner came out first, in 1968, and was met immediately with success.

The expected sale of this muscle car was 20,000 units; but in fact it sold 45,000, prompting the Dodge division of Chrysler to produce the Super Bee, which featured 2-barrel carbs, a big old wing in the back and stripes like its insect namesake; most popularly in yellow and black.

Part of the success of the Road Runner came from clever marketing on the part of Plymouth. $50,000 was paid to Warner Brothers in order that the Road Runner cartoon could be used in promotion of the vehicle.

Even the horn was engineered in reminiscence of the animated Road Runner character’s memorable “Meep meep!”, $10,000 dollars being spent in its design and implementation.

In an ironic twist, it turns out coyotes are actually faster than the bird called “road runner” in real life, reaching speeds of around 40 MPH against the bird’s 20 MPH average; the advantage for the avian being the gift of flight, which it seldom uses. This is a reason entertainment and marketing doesn’t always pay attention to the facts—who is going to want to plop down a few grand on a Plymouth Coyote? Sounds more like a motorcycle than a car. Yet the desert dog is quicker than the roadside bird.

Public opinion isn’t always informed by facts. So ending the digression, the fact is Road Runners were one sweet car, and have carved their niche in the classic market with all legitimacy, even if their namesake doesn’t bear close scrutiny.

By the time Plymouth came out with the Road Runner, muscle cars were at such a popularity that regular design features were forming a solid engineering basis on which to develop improvements; like in handling, and steering. In general, later model productions have engineering chops over their earlier incarnations, as engineers have time to note

how unforeseen problems or advantages may be fixed or streamlined. That doesn’t always mean the next-gen vehicle is the best, though.

Like with re-made movies, sometimes the original just has that particular development and presentation that can never truly be matched, even via innovation. With the Road Runner, engineers sought to cut any non-essential features from the vehicle, improving the practical performance and handling developments over other muscle cars. Early models of the Road Runner didn’t even have carpets. The

engine of the Road Runner was exclusive to that model, even named the “Roadrunner V8”, which allowed a six-passenger Road Runner to do a quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at a speed of 105 MPH—five times faster than the average of its avian namesake! If Wile E. Coyote were driving a Road Runner, he never would have had to contact ACME. With all the popularity of the Road Runner, it was a no-brainer for Dodge, a sister division of Plymouth, to develop the Super Bee, which ran for a limited release from 1968 to 1970, and was re-released in the ‘00s some 40 years later. The Dodge

Super Bee was designed in direct competition of the Road Runner. Plymouth and Dodge were at the time competing to be the Chrysler performance division Road Track master.

Many confuse the two vehicles because of their similarity of appearance, but the Super Bee was a over 60 lbs. heavier and had a 117-inch wheelbase, compared to the Road Runner’s 116 inch one. The Super-Bee had larger rear wheel openings, its iconic tailstripe, a much fancier grille, and ornamentation of the taillights. The Super Bee also had accessories of a much higher quality than the

Road Runner, so it was sold for $100 to $200 more. Also, the Super Bee could come with a Hemi; though this engine option threw about an extra $1000 dollars on the price, and resulted in only about 125 units being sold. A hard-topped option came out in ’69, as well as the option of a twin-scooped induction hood—this was the Super Bee Ramcharger. The Ramcharger wasn’t the most iconic Super Bee, though. That distinction came with the “sixpack”, which was the name used to describe three two-barrel carburetors. This was the “mid-option” of the Super Bee, the Hemi engine being on the high end, and the 383 Magnum high performance engine on the low.

Another enhanced design for the Super Bee came in 1970, but by then sales had begun to decline, some say because of the twin-looped bumper labeled “bumble-bee wings” by the public.

The Road Runner and Super Bee were nonetheless favorite muscle cars in the late sixties, and have their particular spot firmly carved in the sports car hall of fame. When people say “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”, these are the kinds of cars they’re talking about.

Increased regulation and bureaucracy, as well as lighter building materials and cuttingedge technology, have contributed to a sleek generation of cars in today’s world, and many laud this as an improvement. But for the intrepid car enthusiast, here’s a question that has some relevance: what’s better, a painting by Da Vinci, or a film by Pixar?

In some measure the comparison is an apples-to-oranges one; but from another perspective craftsmanship and renown specify the elder choice, and for many car aficionados, the same rings true for vehicle design. Maybe the muscle cars of the sixties and seventies didn’t have onboard cameras or an internet to connect to, but they weren’t robots, either. Those pony cars had personality.
