“We’ve got a really great community that supports law enforcement... this place has been awesome,” says Corporal Marlene Sharpe of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). Originally from Lynn, Massachusetts, Marlene’s been all over the world.

After achieving a sociology BA, she joined the Air Force in 1990 and protected missile silos across Cheyenne and Nebraska through the Security Police. Her final duty station was at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Through the Air Force, she served in Osan, South Korea near the DMZ, where she observed annual exercises featuring fighter pilots flying maneuvers and A-10s using live explosives. From the military, she was hired by the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office,

and soon applied to the CCSO, where she currently serves. “It’s great working in a community that trusts us to do what we’re supposed to do. It’s not just us, though,” Corporal Sharpe points out, “...the community supports each other when there’s need. They do a good job. It’s a really good community up here.”

Marlene’s current assignment is to the CCSO patrol division, where she’s served as Corporal six of her twenty-four years; achieving the Meritorious Service Award as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). Corporal Sharpe has worked diverse assignments, including Field Training Supervisor, Field Training Officer, DRE/ DWUI Instructor, and Crash Reconstruction Specialist. Her present duties include direct supervision of ten deputies, and reviewing what they do to aid

Marlene Sharpe Campbell County Sheriff’s Department their development. “I have a really good group...overall the sheriff’s office has a really good group of guys!” Corporal Sharpe is efficient, handling complex service calls, coordinating training and schedules, transferring people into patrol divisions, supervising officers in training, training new Patrol and Detention officers, and organizing representative training programs. It’s a lot to handle—patrol training requires five months’ inhouse and on-the-job training. Some things “you just can’t train for”, says Marlene—at least not in a classroom. That’s a partial reason she directly trains new employees in a patrol car. This is important regarding DRE work. Specialized training and direction in impairing substance identification like illicit drugs is key. Corporal Sharpe’s work informs of-

ficer training in agencies like Probation and Parole, as well as local mines, energy-related businesses, the school district, and Volunteers of America.

She helps officers understand signs and symptoms related to drug impairment, additionally acting as specialist when alcohol isn’t the impairing agent. New deputies must complete a 24-hour DWUI class she instructs, including a “wet” lab. When not preparing officers of the CCSO, Sharpe is busy with projects around the house, and keeping three dogs disciplined in obedience, agility, tricks, and scent exercises. A skilled officer with a distinguished career, Marlene has spent her life protecting the community and passing her knowledge to the next generation. Thank you, Corporal Marlene Sharpe!

Mortality - It’s one life - one death for everyone. “No one gets out this life alive” according to some pundits, and that’s a fact. Let’s cut through some of the hysteria and wadded panties of the panty waists on TV and look at the math of life in 2020. First: The US has a population of roughly 327 million, so with about 1100 deaths as this is written, the chances of an individual dying of the Kung-Flu are roughly 1 in 300,000 or about 3 per million people. During an average flu season, your chances of dying of the flu are about 1 in 9,000 during an average year of flu related death. Second: Consider that the vast majority of deaths are as contributing complications to existing conditions to those that are older and/or have compromised health to begin with. More like the “last straw” that precipitates and inevitable passing than a smoking gun that is powerful enough to result in death unassisted. The average age at death of Corona virus victims in Italy is 81! That’s already past the average American life span!! (Men 74, Ladies 80) Here’s the short list for the top 10 causes of death in America from the CDC 2017 death report: 1. Heart Disease...............635,260 2. Cancer............................598,038 3. Accidents......................161,374 4. Respiratory Disease....154,596 5. Stroke............................142,142 6. Alzheimer’s..................116,103 7. Diabetes..........................80,058 8. Flu/Pneumonia..............51,537 9. Kidney Disease.............50,046 10. Suicide..........................44,965 So we see the flu is only #8 in the top 10 and now we have perhaps an extra 1000 deaths today, perhaps 10,000 before the surge dies down on flu related deaths. Even if we experienced as many as 40 percent more deaths than average and lost 32,000 more than the 80,000 deaths to flu and pneumonia in 2017, the virus would still not move up to number 7 as cause of death. Third: Let’s keep our perspective and think about the math on this concern. It’s not worth destroying the economy and suffering government overreach for the small potatoes this flu will wind up being! Relax. It’ll probably be remembered as the Panty Wad Panic if 2020!
