The Mustang That Sally Drove

Most people have heard the song Mustang Sally, and the vehicle it brings to mind usually isn’t the modern incarnation of the Mustang available to the public today. There are few vehicles more iconic or recognizable among American automobiles than the Mustang. Originally a concept car called the Ford Mustang I that developed from earlier well-received designs, the first concept Mustang had four seats, but changed into a two-seater in 1963, called the Ford Mustang II, which was then used to gauge public reaction and generate interest in a model made for more than show. The first Mustang available to the public was a convertible that became known as the Mustang 1964 ½ by enthusiasts, as it was released early in 1964. From then the iconic design swept manufacturers, being the herald for a host of vehicles featuring long hoods and very short rear decks.
Lee Iaccoca was one of the men most responsible for the Mustang, and is regarded as a visionary of vehicular design and production. He worked with Ford until 1978, when differences with Henry Ford II resulted in his release. Until then his sales and marketing acumen were legendary among Ford, and his legacy remained afterward, even earning him a role on an episode of Miami Vice in 1986. Iacocca continued to spearhead design and development for Chrysler after that, up until his retirement in 1992. Sleek design and broad appeal were staples of Iaccoca’s influence, so much so that many other companies began to emulate the kind of vehicles produced under Iacocca’s direction. John DeLorean, responsible for the futuristic car that bore his namesake and defined the Back to the Future films in the 80s—before some narcotic shenanigans shut the company down (DeLorean cars were being used to smuggle cocaine)—found himself so inspired by Lee

Iaccoca’s Mustang he developed the Pontiac Banshee in 1966. Ford was more interested in promotion of their Corvette, however, and so DeLorean’s Banshee was discontinued and he ended up working small changes on the Camaro design, which eventually resulted in the Pontiac Firebird. It’s very interesting to compare vehicles and their designers, as a design story emerges over time. The Mustang, designed by Ford under completely different direction, has through influence transmitted aspects of its engineering to other vehicles from entirely different manufacturers. This is a regular thing in the automobile industry, almost in the same way popular films or music produce similar trends over time. J.J. Abrams directed the Star Trek reboot films which came out several years ago, and is now spearheading the new Star Wars films. Fans of either franchise have had hilariously unnecessary rivalries, when in reality neither product exists in complete purity, but instead draws from a variety of existing influences. The same phenomenon defines many vehicles we drive, and those that have accrued historical renown, like the Mustang. Now in its sixth generation, the Mustang has undergone numerous upgrades and engineering advances, but still retains its iconic look. Car aficionados can easily tell a Mustang from the analogues developed by other companies, but the uninitiated may not find this so easy. For example, in the James Bond classic Goldfinger, many don’t notice the Mustang 1964 ½ makes an appearance. Considering the film was released in September of 1964, it’s easy to see just what kind of an impact this vehicle had—and continues to have—in popular culture. As time continued on its normal trajectory, Mustangs matured accordingly, becoming more aerodynamic and popular. The 1969 Mustang Boss looks much more modern than its 1964 predecessor. This is due in part to a re-design that took place in 1967. For the next six years the car itself would get larger, though not necessarily increase in power. Originally designed for speed and power, consumer needs slowly translated the car from muscle to luxury. Mustangs in the early 70s weren’t as well received as the initial design in large part because of this; and there ended the first

generation of Mustangs. In ’74, Lee Iacocca was president of Ford and decided to bring a more fuelefficient design to the next generation of Mustangs. This Mustang was much smaller, and because of emission regulations and the like became much heavier due to a requirement for additional emission technology. Toward the end of the 70’s, third generation Mustangs introduced four headlights, eventually earning the car the nickname “four eyes”. From there changes in design and demand continually diminished the vehicle from its original greatness, though enthusiasts continue to hail it across the spectrum of design generations. Really, the golden age for the Mustang was the initial decade of its release, and the greatest gilded shine definitely came in the last half of the sixties, when environmental regulations and gas prices were less constricting, and the economic slump of the seventies was yet to hit. When people think of iconic muscle cars, the Mustang is likely to be the first thing that comes to mind. But it isn’t the modern Mustang of 2015, or the more affordable incarnations that came in the 80s and 90s. When people think of Mustangs, that original, powerful and sleek design from fifty years ago is usually the mental picture; and for good reason. Those cars had impact, and are extremely valuable today. Artistry doesn’t just come in the form of literature and film, or painting and music; engineering is its own art form, and in the 1960s some of the most visionary designers and engineers had a pristine window of accomplishment that is still revered today. Many enthusiasts would argue this window only came once, and is now closed, and historical evidence seems to vindicate them. Whatever the reality, the Ford Mustang has a solid niche in automobile fame, and will always represent the power and beauty that comes from skillful engineering and design.
