Muscle Cars – the Golden Era

1969 and ’70 were some of the best years for muscle cars in the United States, and probably the world. It was a time of social change and technological innovation. Propaganda wars were being waged between the Soviets and America, social unrest and civil rights revolutions were sweeping the country, and a new generation was reaching adulthood in a changed world. The transition of vehicular innovation and popularity is easy to see. The new cars were reflective of the new generation’s outlook, and marketing moguls were no saps at capturing the imagination of the people. More streamlined “coke-bottle” design cars were all the rage, and getting better with each new design iteration. It can take a few years for a new thing to catch on, so vehicles that hit the market in the early sixties were now at the zenith of their lifespan, and auto manufacturers were rushing to compete with one another and emerge king of the mountain, as it were. From Corvettes to Camaros, Mustangs to Road Runners and the short-lived Super Bee, muscle cars—or “pony cars”, as some called them—were all the rage in the sixties, and have left a lasting impression on the automobile market. The Muscle Car started as an affordable option for speed and elegance, and really began to gain prominence in the 1950s among the social elite. The first Mustang came out in ‘63, but it wouldn’t be until the next year that the most iconic design, the Ford Mustang 1964 ½ spearheaded by Lee
Iacocca, would carve a permanent spot in the realm of classic cars. The design of that ’64 ½ was downright inspirational, spurring innovation from such names as John DeLorean, who was responsible for the 1980s future car bearing his namesake, as well as some of the most well-regarded Camaros of the 1960s, and the Pontiac Firebird. DeLorean would be so inspired by the Mustang he would create his own rebuttal to it called the Pontiac Banshee, but whether for the negative connotation in the name or administrative dismissal, General Motors never continued the Banshee and instead set DeLorean to work on the Camaro, which became a muscle car mainstay in its own right. In 1969, Mustang had upgraded its design into the Mustang Boss, which had a much more modern look and some exceptional design features over its more revered predecessor. As the decade ended, consumer desire switched from muscle to luxury, and this among other factors is a reason pony cars after the sixties just weren’t the same. Another man who inspired substantial innovation was Bill Mitchell of GM. While DeLorean achieved substantial acumen in the design field, Mitchell’s time at GM was called “The Bill Mitchell Era”. Inspired by a shark in his design for the Corvette Stingray Coupe of 1963, Mitchell was instrumental in bringing the muscle car market mainstream, and by the end of the sixties, Corvettes were some of
the sexiest muscle cars around, and remain so to this day. It may have been competition that spurned DeLorean on in his design of the Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet also being a division of General Motors. In 1968 the Z/28 Camaro hit the racetracks and dominated through ’69, becoming the defining member of the Camaro family. While popular regard of the Camaro most often remembers the seventies, aficionados point to the Z/28 for good reason: it took all the design innovation of earlier models and improved it substantially. Penske engineers were outsourced to improve the vehicle’s design; and improve it they did. But Camaros weren’t the only car to debut in ’68 and end the turbulent sixties with popular muscle cars that many would argue can’t be beat in style or impact even today. The Plymouth Road Runner and Dodge Super Bee both came out in ’68 and became extremely popular throughout the country. The vehicles were very similar in appearance and performance. Plymouth and Dodge are divisions of Chrysler, and as the Camaro and Corvette had in-house competition, so did the Road Runner and the Super Bee, both of which were exceptionally popular. In fact, when the Road Runner debuted, it was only expected to sell 20,000 units, but in fact sold 45,000; more than doubling manufacturer expectation. The trend of affordable, fast cars had caught on fully by this point, and their reign was at its peak. A sort of “car culture” spawned from this time in American history, influencing everyone in the country. While cars had always been popular, they hadn’t had the same kind of power, affordability or appeal as in previous decades. It’s easy to see how vehicles developed from clunky, boxy contraptions to sleek swift savants. If the childhood of automobile transportation was the thirties, the sixties would represent full-blown adolescence. And if the analogy is carried further, the cars of today are like vehicles hit middle age
and decided to see if plastic surgery would make it so nobody could tell. Sure, there’s more knowledge and experience; but the energetic putsch of the sixties is just unmatched today, and there’s a lot of inferior plastic involved. Many sixties muscle cars have withstood the test of time, like the 1968 Dodge Charger. Everybody knows the Dodge Charger, and it’s been over 40 years since that car hit the market. It’s not as likely to see the same kind of horsepower in the cars of today as was available back then. The charger had a V8 that produced 375 HP. This was the era of the Hemi, which was a kind of engine that often produced 400 HP or more, and was featured in multiple muscle cars throughout the decade. Innovation and design hasn’t ever been quite what it was since. Technology and production has increased and cheapened, making more models available to the market at large; but availability doesn’t necessarily translate to quality. Fewer legal and PR restrictions assailed muscle-car culture of the sixties, enabling a freedom of design. Economy was at a point where more people could afford these types of vehicles as well, and so for many in the late sixties, the muscle car became a firm staple of transportation elegance. The seventies would bring economic crises and a change in public taste, as well as Disco and other atrocities. And as cars have developed, less-heavy building materials have made them faster, but less sturdy. A driver can feel the power of a sixties muscle-car, and when that engine roars so do the driver’s veins; almost as though the horsepower transfers from the engine to the person behind the wheel. A golden era like that may never come again, and perhaps it shouldn’t. The engineering excellence of this time would be cheapened if it were repeated—but that’s the thing about golden eras: they only come around once in a lifetime.
