So ... You Want to Fly? What Will it Take to Get a Pilot’s License?

What will it Cost?

The cost is estimated to be from $7,000 to $10,000 for most students to earn a Private Pilot Certificate. Although 40 hours is the minimum time to complete training, individual students learn at different speeds. Very few students manage it in only 40 hours, a minimum enacted decades ago. The knowledge to be mastered has increased significantly due to the FAA more complex requirements. Aircraft rental is $126 per hour, and flight instruction is $48.50 per hour. Discounts for buying blocks of aircraft time and payment plans are available. Ground instruction is required to prepare for the knowledge test, but we highly recommend various online study products; some of which include books and other associated materials. See www.kingschools.com. Plan on spending $600 for home ground-school materials. Knowledge tests normally cost $175. Practical tests have an examiner’s fee; usually from $350 to $500. Students will be required to have an FAA flight physical prior to solo. Dr. James Naramore in Gillette, WY is an FAA approved medical examiner. To keep costs down, we recommend planning to fly twice per week as often as is practical. This helps keep recently learned skills intact and minimizes the need to relearn something.
