Here we are again! Once more, the year has passed in the blink of an eye, made even faster - I think - by being part of the ANZA community. There’s something about our association, with its 90+ regular monthly meetups, that not only brings a sense of comfort and belonging but also offers something to constantly look forward to, making you lose all track of time!
2024 has certainly gone all out. With over 30 sports, social, and interest groups, ANZA provides more for our members than ever. We've expanded our Pickleball, Padel, Singing, and Watersports groups, and launched new offerings including Netball - Adults, Crochet, and Tiny Tots Nature Play (getting little ones into the ANZA spirit before they can walk!).
Our ANZA events are growing too. The inaugural 'AIS & ANZA Family Fun Fest' was a roaring success (see p24 for evidence), and our 'ANZA Black & White Ball 2024' was a highlight of Singapore's social calendar. To cap off the year, our ANZA 'Christmas in the Garden' event on 10 December at the Australian High Commissioner’s Residence will be a fabulous night.
To prepare for the festivities, I recommend diving into this new issue, which is packed with advice for getting set for the season. On p30, we have an awesome roundup of the best places to find local, sustainable, and unique gifts for friends and family. You’ll discover great ideas for creating a festive atmosphere in your home through scent on p34, expert tips for updating your look in Happy New Hair on p40, and It's Wine Time! on p54 reveals all you need to know about serving and sipping vino like a pro.
As I wrap up, I'd like to express my gratitude to all our members who contribute to making the ANZA community so special. A big shout-out goes to our volunteers who keep ANZA thriving and ensure that we all have fun. We couldn’t do it without you.

We are sprinting to the end of 2024, and the groaning celebratory bellies are nearly here! Thankfully, these will give way to New Year’s resolutions to trim that bloat and get in shape for Chinese New Year. As expats on the red dot, we all know and love this cycle.
My children are now adults and no longer living in Singapore, so what the end of the year looks like is evolving. Dealing with end-of-term tiredness and the hectic schedule of rushed trips back to Australia to see loved ones is a thing of the past. I empathise with all the families with young children who have so much fun ahead but also so much to pack in!
As the years have progressed, sharing a tropical Christmas dinner here with friends and scheduled calls to family in distant time zones have replaced returning to Oz. I’ll be eagerly reading this magazine issue for party ideas for the coming season and look forward to sharing the holiday spirit at the ANZA Christmas in the Garden event on 10 December with fellow members.
There is one festive family tradition that I do miss. On the flight back to Singapore, we used to compile a collective family “to-do list” of what each of us wanted to achieve in the coming 12 months. Visiting Changi Chapel made it onto that list for 15 years!
At the top of my “to-do list” this year was to read more widely, so I joined an ANZA Book Club. This group seems to have struck the perfect balance between book discussion, wine and solving the world’s problems. Thank you, ladies!
Next year’s self-improvement plan is taking shape. The AIS & ANZA Family Fun Fest a few months ago showcased the extensive variety of ANZA activities available, and I enjoyed learning more about how each group operates while speaking to our subgroup representatives. Joining ANZA Cycling on a Saturday morning or hitting a ball or two on Wednesday nights with ANZA Cricket is high on my list for 2025.
Given the wide range of offerings we provide, perhaps it’s time for you to try something new with us this year? Or nudge a partner, friend or family member into getting out of their comfort zone?
From all of us on the ANZA Executive Committee, we wish you a warm and loving end to the year. Stay connected!

As we draw closer to the end of the year, the celebration season is all around us. For me, it’s a chance to reflect on the way we Kiwis in Singapore have celebrated our culture this year, with the help of organisations like ANZA, the NZ Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwi Waka Ama club under the leadership of kaumatua Tony Keepa.
One highlight was this year’s “Invinci-ball”, a fantastic night of food, drink, dancing, and conversation with friends old and new. Timed to coincide with the All Blacks playing South Africa, I was absolutely delighted to be part of such a vibrant gathering.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE SINGING 'TUTIRA MAI NGA IWI'
The opportunity to have both the Kiwi Waka Ama club and AIS kapa haka groups perform for the crowd was very special, and testament to the effort of Tony Keepa, Niral Patel, the Lampe, Williams’ and Perry families (among others) for nurturing Māori culture and performance amongst our community. There is nothing like hundreds of people singing “Tutira mai nga iwi” to remind you of home!
I’d also like to recognise that this wonderful evening celebrating Kiwi culture was put together by an Australian, a Singaporean and an American! A big thank you Tahsh, Carina and Mel along with YQ and Katrina, Kellie and other members of the Board of the NZ Chamber of Commerce for all your efforts.
While the All Blacks sadly lost the rugby that evening, the opportunity for over 200 people with connections to Aotearoa New Zealand to come together for a night of celebration here in Singapore felt like a win nonetheless!
Wishing you all an enjoyable festive season!
Gabby

ANZA TOURS
The past few months have been a whirlwind for ANZA Tours. They've traversed the island to visit local food factories to discover how our favourite Singapore foods are made, been marvelling at architecture, and have gone temple-hopping in Jalan Besar. They also spent a Saturday night uncovering Singapore's mysterious alleyways and fascinating past triad world with an insightful tour led by a former gang member. What's next?!
ANZA SCOUTS
As ANZA Scouts wrapped up Term 3, they welcomed new members into the group. New Joeys (5 - 8 years) and Cubs (8 - 11 years) received unit badges and scarves in a ceremony in front of proud parents. Joeys also concluded the term with a trip to a fire station to hear how SCDF helps those in need.
SET LUNCH
Meeting and eating is the name of the game for ANZA Set Lunch. In recent weeks, members have enjoyed delicious meals and great conversations at Otto and The Prince, both in Tanjong Pagar, as well as at Barossa Bar & Grill in VivoCity. Judging by those smiles, both the food and the company were perfect!
LADIES NIGHT
ANZA Ladies cosied up on the sofas at Rumpoles Bar in September for our monthly Ladies Night. Drinks were enjoyed, snacks were nibbled on, and friendships were formed. These regular evenings keep getting bigger and better! Check our website at anza.org.sg to join the fun.
NETBALL
Lucky ANZA Netball players were in for an absolute treat when some members of the Singapore National Team visited to train together and share tips on improving their game. A big thank you to them for this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity - our players (and volunteers!) loved it!

CHILL, CHAT, CONNECT
ANZA’s Chill, Chat, Connect event is one of the hottest nights in Singapore's social calendar! Attendees enjoyed engaging conversations, laughter, delicious snacks and free-flowing drinks, while forming strong connections. The night also provided a great opportunity to learn about ANZA's diverse offerings, thanks to our sports and subgroup leaders who were there sharing stories and knowledge. Guests were also treated to a fantastic performance by The ANZA Singing Group, accompanied by two talented violinists.

Last month we hosted our final Thriving In Singapore event of the year, welcoming new and existing members to the Australian High Commission. Everyone had the chance to make new friends and learn about life on the red dot over a morning tea, sponsored by Sarnies. Big thanks to our expert presenters and event sponsors Select Investors, Odin Mortgage, International Medical Clinic, and Expat Dental who shared essential tips and advice.

The most wonderful time
of the year!
The AIS & ANZA Family Fun Fest 2024 was a summer smash with activities for all the family, fantastic food, and the mingling of our awesome community.
The AIS & ANZA Family Fun Fest 2024 was a massive hit!
On Saturday, 7 September, over 3,000 people gathered at the Australian International School campus for a day filled with joy, laughter, and community spirit.
Kids were spoiled for choice with activities, from bouncy castles and face painting to arts and crafts, obstacle courses, and sports challenges. Parents mingled, explored booths, and enjoyed a relaxed family picnic in the lovely weather. BBQ sponsor, Butcher Box, kept everyone fuelled with hearty steak sandwiches, a sausage sizzle, and classic meat pies. Plus, the vendor stalls proved popular with sweet treats including popsicles, tiramisu, and cupcakes. The fresh produce from Little Farms was also a hit.
ANZA’s sports and sub-groups kept the energy high and the good times flowing with a host of engaging activities. ANZA
Soccer led the way with their popular social kicks, while ANZA Scouts entertained with a Tug-O-War and creative carriage and tentbuilding challenges. ANZA Cycling offered expert bike tips and maintenance advice, all while participants enjoyed a refreshing cold brew. Over at ANZA Golf, a fun putting challenge put skills to the test, and ANZA Mahjong demonstrated the excitement behind this beloved Chinese tile game. The little ones were not left out, with ANZA Tiny Tots keeping them busy with colouring and puzzles, while ANZA Nippers’ sludge bath became a hit for adventurous children. The ANZA Singing Group provided lively performances, and cricket fans had the chance to try their hand at the wickets. Topping it off, ANZA Stitches offered delightful handmade craft giveaways, adding a creative touch to a wonderful day.
A big shoutout goes to our presenting sponsor, Eight Wealth International, whose bracelet-making station and corn toss was a huge hit! Thanks also to Smilefocus for bringing in a talented caricature artist; to ArtWorks Gallery for their photobooth, capturing unforgettable memories of the day; and to CM Relocation for their logistical support. A heartfelt thank you also goes to the Australian International School for co-hosting the event and to their fantastic team for ensuring everything ran smoothly. We were thrilled to welcome Australian High Commissioner to Singapore Allaster Cox who took the time to meet the AIS and ANZA communities. “ANZA’s Family Fun Fest was a huge success. We’re already looking forward to partnering with AIS again next year!” said ANZA’s General Manager, Kerry Low.
Tanglin Trust School Turns 100
Looking back at a century of learning, legacy, and forward thinking.
This year marks Tanglin Trust School’s Centenary - a celebration of 100 years of excellence. The year-long series of Centenary events provides the perfect opportunity for the school to reflect on its past, celebrate its present, and look toward the next 100 years.
The school’s Centenary celebrations began with the opening of the exhibition 100 Years of Tanglin: Celebrating a Century of Excellence. The exhibition, which runs all year, showcases the history of the school, from its beginnings in 1925 on the grounds of the Tanglin Club, through the tumultuous World War II years, and its subsequent
The launch of the Tanglin Centenary Exhibition
growth and evolution to become the dynamic international school of 2850 students that it is today. Fascinating artefacts from the school’s archive include historical uniforms, letters, and stories from students spanning the decades. At its centrepiece is a letter from Buckingham Palace congratulating the school on its momentous milestone. The opening event was attended by over 150 guests, including alumni, parents, Tanglin Foundation members, and staff - some of whom have dedicated over 15 years of service to the school - alongside past Heads of School. The exhibition set the tone for what promises to be an exciting year ahead, with many more events planned, including a grand birthday party for the entire Tanglin community, a Gala at The Clifford Pier and a special reunion event in London for Tanglin alumni.
Tanglin has also published a book entitled 100 Tanglin Tales to commemorate its Centenary. This special coffee table book written by students, staff, alumni, and parents, brings to life fascinating stories about Tanglin in the last century. All these events will be the perfect opportunity for parents to try the Tanglin Trust 1925 Centenary Gin crafted with botanicals inspired by herbs from the Cameron Highlands, where the school’s founder, Miss Griffith, ran a boarding school during the 1930s. The gin is a distinctive tribute to her legacy and the adventurous spirit that still pervades Tanglin today.
Inspiring Future Generations: The Institute at Tanglin
While the Centenary is a time to celebrate Tanglin’s rich history, the school is also focused on the future. As part of the Centenary year, The Institute at Tanglin is hosting a series of talks under the theme ‘The Future of…’. Each talk will explore the opportunities and challenges different industries will face in the coming years, covering fields such as healthcare, robotics, and geopolitics.
The keynote lecture, ‘Winning with AI’, will be delivered by Dr Ayesha Khanna, a global thought leader on the future of AI. These talks, which are free and open to both the Tanglin community and the public, aim to foster discussion and engagement, ensuring that the next generation of Tanglin students are well-equipped to navigate the rapidly evolving global landscape.
A highlight of the Centenary calendar of events will be the Centenary Gala Concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall in April 2025. This event will feature the world premiere of a specially commissioned piece by renowned British composer Jonathan Dove, performed by Tanglin’s talented musicians, including the school’s first group of Centenary Music Scholars.
The Highlands Programme: A New Chapter for Tanglin
As part of its Centenary in 2025, Tanglin will launch the Highlands Programme at the new Tanglin Gippsland campus in Australia, nestled in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. The Highlands Programme is a five-week immersive programme designed as the pinnacle of Tanglin’s Middle School education. Mark Cutchie, the Head of Campus, will head up the programme which will focus on fostering three essential attributes: curiosity, confidence and community.
Under Mark’s direction, students will immerse themselves in experiential learning, and engage in outdoor education, building a deeper connection with their peers and the natural world. The programme underscores Tanglin’s commitment to offering a holistic
education. “The Highlands Programme will draw together many key elements of Middle schooling in early adolescent education, and offer an inspiring space to instil some of the wonder and awe that is part of each person’s development,” says Craig Considine, CEO of Tanglin.
Looking to the Future
As Tanglin Trust School celebrates its Centenary, it remains dedicated to providing a world-class British education with an international perspective. From its humble beginnings of five British students schooled in two Attap huts, Tanglin’s journey over the past 100 years is a testament to the strength of its community and the enduring legacy of its founder, Miss Anne Griffith-Jones.

THE ARTFOOL SOUL
Art always makes a great gift, whether it’s for others or yourself. Australian expat Nicole Duffell is an illustrator based in Singapore creating vibrant prints with a local flavour that bring feel-good vibes into everyday life.
Describe your artwork … It reflects who I am, my inner world (which
runs like a cartoon for the most part!), and my life experiences. I grew up in rural Australia, which fuelled my love of nature and animals. Additionally, I’ve been lucky enough to travel as a professional musician for many years, so I have a passion for jazz. Both of these elements come through in my pieces.
What makes your work different? I come from an entirely analog drawing background, having worked as an illustrator and cartoonist before the advent of the digital art world. I try to maintain this organic approach. I still use the old grid system to draw portraits when needed, then scan the drawings into Adobe programmes to finish them digitally with colour.
How do you produce your art? It starts organically as a pencil sketch on paper. I’m not a painter, so I love that I can now complete drawings digitally. I like to print in limited editions, signed and numbered on sustainably sourced archival paper. I will also have a collection of handdrawn original work available by year end.

Where do you get your inspiration?
There’s a story behind every drawing I create. My biggest influences are the “golden age” illustrators from the late 1800's to the 1930's. Singapore has been my home for nearly 25 years and I love everything about the island - the people, food, cultural mix, greenery - all of which plays a part in my work. I view everything in life as art and see colour in the most mundane things, which inspires me to draw everything.
Why does your art make a great gift? These days we live in a cookie-cutter,
throwaway world with AI in the mix, which I do not use in my art. I believe it’s a true gift to have something thoughtfully human-crafted (and that supports a small business). I put my heart and soul into every drawing and I adamantly use sustainably sourced materials, packaging and paper whenever possible so that each creation reflects my best efforts and contributes a little to taking care of our planet. I also donate some proceeds to local animal welfare groups.
What's your personal favourite piece? I participated in a local six-piece limitededition “Comfort in Nostalgia” collection. (See far left). My submission features kids eating noodles - my favourite comfort food - along with fun objects from my childhood and items I’ve fallen in love with while making a home in Singapore.
Any tips for shopping for art?
Don’t be afraid to buy prints! A good print is made on gallery paper, which is fade-resistant for over one hundred years. Singapore is scattered with numerous small galleries full of locally produced art, and art prints are becoming more accepted in mainstream galleries. Look for locally made art for ease of shipping, support local small businesses (we are ever-so-grateful!), or commission an artist to create something truly personal - the options are endless!

SOUTH BEACH BOARDIES
Kirsten Lopez, from South Fremantle, Western Australia, is the Founder & Director of South Beach Boardies, a clothing store selling better-for-the-planet beachwear such as boardies, rashies, bucket hats, and women’s bathers (with actual bottom coverage!).
Tell us about South Beach Boardies ... All items are made from recycled plastic bottles, organic cotton t-shirts and towels, and eucalyptus shirts. Everything is small batch with big bold prints so you know you’re not going to be wearing the same stuff as everybody else.
Do you design everything yourself?
Most of the stock we sell is our designs - South Beach Boardies beachwear and Freostyle beach towels with pockets - but we also carry a range of other small sustainable Aussie brands including Vasse Virgin, Avocado Zinc, Wash Block, Alchoholder, Sunbather, Backslap, and Frank Green. There’s a range of educational kids toys, and games and books too.
What will be popular buys from South Beach Boardies this Christmas?
What makes you different?
Being a small family business means that we can make sustainability and ethics the most important part of any business decision. Also, being a smallbatch manufacturer gives me freedom in designing. We make some really wacky designs knowing they don’t have to have mass market appeal. I particularly love designing for the Singapore market as people here are generally less conservative in their print choices than they are in Oz.
What’s the history behind your store?
I grew up on the beach in Western Australia and on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. As a very active watersports lover and the mum of four beach boys, getting quality boardies that last has always been important to me. I’ve also seen over my lifetime the huge increase in plastic pollution and over-consumption. I wanted to create alternative clothing encompassing quality that lasts, is ethically made and affordable for families to buy.
The matchy-matchy bestsellers this year will be our Toucan and Penguin printsthey’re likely to sell out well before the season. A range of Singapore-inspired designs including Merlions, Tropical Fruits, Chinese Dragons and Maneki Neko Lucky Cats on surfboards will also be popular. Our Cubano shirt is great for Christmas parties or the big day itself, and our beach towels with pockets are a wellpriced, fun and functional gift to have handy when unexpected people bearing gifts drop by!

Start early and buy items as you find them so you don’t have a mad rush. This also prevents being disappointed when the item you’ve decided will be the perfect gift for someone has sold out already. I see a lot of disappointed people a couple of days before Christmas who’d hoped to buy a family matching set of boardies in a popular print, but they’re too late.

How did your store come about?
It was a long time coming to set up a physical shop after a few years of running it online. I initially kicked off in 2011 with pop-ups and at fairs selling only
a couple of Aussie brands alongside my “e-shop”. When I had my baby in 2015, I bit the bullet and opened a physical store. Thanks to my incredible customers, crew and supportive brands, we are still here nine years later.

The Scent-sational
Christmas is rich with familiar scents that encapsulate the festivities. We look into how fragrance enhances the period no matter where you're spending it.
Presents, turkey, the relative who consumes one too many Baileys … the holiday period is synonymous with many things. One is scent. Certain aromas truly come into their own during the festivities, creating the power to comfort us, excite us, and send us into a spin of nostalgia with recollections of the old days.
No matter what time of year, specific aromas can have an incredible ability to influence our mood, emotions, and even our physical state. This is because our sense of smell is directly linked to the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls emotions, memories and arousal.
When we inhale a scent, it triggers a cascade of physiological responses: fragrances like lavender and chamomile can soothe stress by lowering cortisol levels and promoting relaxation; citrus smells such as lemon and orange boost mood and energy by stimulating the production of serotonin, the “happy” hormone; and a whiff of pine or cinnamon can instantly transport us back to Christmases past.
“During the party season, people gravitate towards comforting scents that incite the spirit of Christmas,” explains Dan Terry Jacobson, founder of the Singapore perfume emporium with a chemistry lab event space, Oo La Lab (oola-lab.com).
“Compared to the rest of the year, festive fragrances are generally richer, more complex, and designed to create a cosy, inviting atmosphere," he says.
Cinnamon and Clove: These spices are quintessential Christmas aromas that add warmth and depth, reminiscent of holiday baking and mulled wine.
Pine and Fir: The fresh, earthy scent of evergreen trees is tantamount to Christmas, bringing the outdoors in and filling the home with a crisp, natural fragrance.
Orange and Cranberry: These fruity notes add a zesty twist to the season,
balancing the heavier, spicier aromas. While Dan shares that due to spending many festive seasons on Australia's Bronte and Bondi beaches, “Christmas to me smells like coconut suntan lotion, salty air, and battered fish," these scents will not be en vogue for the coming months! Rather, Dan says he’s seeing a rise in the popularity of earthy, grounding fragrances that reflect a connection to nature and wellness - think vetiver, cedarwood and
moss paired with unconventional festive notes like black pepper and cardamom. “There’s also a trend towards more complex, layered fragrances that tell a story, such as blending smoky oud with the sweetness of tonka bean and vanilla,” he explains.
Whether travelling overseas or staying put for the celebrations, read on to discover how to invoke the spirit of Christmas through scent this season.
Your Seasonal Scents Shopping List
Dan’s top 20 Christmas aromas and how they add to the holiday spirit:

6. Orange: Bright and zesty, uplifting for the spirits.
7. Cranberry: Tart and sweet, adds a fruity freshness.
8. Ginger: Spicy and warm, evokes holiday baking.

Surround Yourself With Scent
TOPICAL FRAGRANCE:
Perfumes and colognes are great for a personal, long-lasting scent. Applying to pulse points (wrists, neck, inside the elbow) ensures the fragrance evolves with your body heat throughout the day.
TOPICAL OILS: Essential oils can be applied to the skin for a more therapeutic effect. For example, lavender oil can be rubbed on the temples for relaxation. (Ensure the oil is mixed in a carrier base before applying directly to the skin and avoid any possible irritants like cinnamon).
CANDLES: Ideal for setting a mood in a room, candles can fill your space with a soft, diffused scent.
BATHING: Adding essential oils or scented bath salts to your bath provides both aromatic and physical benefits.
DIFFUSERS: Ideal for a consistent, subtle scent in your home or office, diffusers work well for larger spaces.

This time of year is a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about charity and generosity, and one way to instil these values is by choosing a school that prioritises outreach as part of its curriculum.
Marlborough College Malaysia (MCM) has compassion, companionship and conversation at the heart of its educational philosophy and these values feed into all aspects of school life.
The Power of
Giving Back
As the festive season approaches, the outreach programme at Marlborough College Malaysia is in full swing, emphasising the importance of giving back.
Pupils recognise the benefits of giving back for themselves and for those in need
At Marlborough College Malaysia, outreach and service activities take place year-round. Pupils are encouraged to recognise the benefits of giving back, both for themselves and for those in need.
Pupils have a myriad of ways to get involved, not just through fundraising, but also by offering their time to others. This Christmas, pupils will once again take part in the Shoebox Appeal which sees them donating a shoebox full of Christmas gifts for orphanages and refugee schools in the area. Last year over 450 boxes were collected.
Sixth Form students take the lead in organising a variety of fundraising events through the ‘Raising and Giving Society’ including food and clothing drives, charity music nights, and activity days for local schools. They also lead educational sessions for local orphanages and visit elderly care homes.
But it’s not only through outreach that the College embraces the spirit of giving back. As a not-for-profit organisation, MCM reinvests all surplus funds into enhancing the educational experience for its pupils. Take the ongoing development of the lake area, which began in 2021. The College constructed a jetty for watersports, added more paddleboards and kayaks and replenished local fish populations to create a nature reserve. This year, a scenic path around the lake was also established for nature walks, enriching the school’s outdoor learning environment.
This spirit of giving is also something that visitors to the College comment upon frequently, for example, MCM recently achieved BSO
accreditation recognising that they provide a highquality British education similar to that found in leading independent schools in England. Inspectors commented that “Engagement with the local community features highly in school life. Pupils support around six school charities for which there is a variety of fundraising activities and events. They engage actively to demonstrate high levels of social responsibility.”
In a world where kindness and generosity are more important than ever, Marlborough College Malaysia embodies the true spirit of giving, making it an outstanding place for pupils to learn and grow.

NEW HAPPY HAIR!
If there’s one thing that needs to be right over the festive period, it’s your hair. Make sure you’re the mane attraction as the year draws to a close.
Forget the presents, menu plans and family games schedule. As the celebratory season approaches, what’s important is your hair: how it looks, feels, and if it's party-ready. Nobody wants to welcome the celebrations at home or away with out-of-date, tired-looking locks. “Great hair increases our self-esteem and affects our mood and how we present ourselves,” says Kat Moss, owner of Expat Hair Studio Singapore. “As the festivities can place us in situations where we might need a confidence boost - such as work parties and unfamiliar group gatherings - it helps to get your hair in check so you can truly sparkle.” Read on for essential expert tips on how to spend the coming months feeling a cut above the rest.
The ‘hun half bun’ is a good go-to
By Toni Ovenden, founder and director of Love Hair
What are the biggest hair challenges for women in Singapore?
Managing frizz, hair loss and over coloured or processed hair are issues here. For frizz and over processing, seek advice from your hairdresser on which styles and products will work best for you. There are many factors that could contribute to thinning hair - we see postpartum hair loss for the mums of Singapore.
What are the most popular hairstyles for the holiday season?
Loose, lived in waves or texture is very on trend. However, for any events that are taking place outdoors in the Singapore heat, combining loose waves with a simple updo or braid to keep hair away from your face and neck is ideal. A "tiara bun" is also popular for a mini face lift and sleek polished look.
Any emerging looks for 2025?
We’re seeing more hair trends from Europe around bolder haircuts, shags, wolf cuts, and the "bixie haircut" - where a bob meets a pixie cut! Although in Singapore the style is still towards long and soft. Sunflower blondes are also trending; warmer blondes who are jealous of copper colours but want to keep their own identity. Cloud curls - natural-looking, airy and textured waves which embrace the fluffiness of your natural curl - will also be big news.
Any celebs we should be looking to for hair inspo?
Sabrina Carpenter, Emma Stone, Khloe Kardashian, Rosie Huntington-Whitley and Emily Ratajkowski each encapsulate great hair for the coming season.
What are your suggestions for last-minute styling?
Zigzag waves are easy to achieve with overnight braids or a curling tong. The sleek bun/pony, where the hair is pulled tightly back so it’s super sleek and won’t
go frizzy, is big with celebrities right now. And the "hun half bun" - where just the top section of your hair in a mini-bun with the rest of your hair loose - is a good go-to.
How can we best maintain healthy hair in SG year-round?
You need to focus on having regular trims to prevent split ends from rising up the hair shaft. Opt for a shower filter because the water is really hard in Singapore, and use a heat protector. Always get professional advice on the best care available specifically for your hair - products are your best friend in the tropical climate.
By when should clients book their Christmas hair appointment with you for this year?

The ‘money piece’ is our most requested colour
By Samantha Paris Checklin, founder of Hair Shaka
How should we be styling our hair this season?
A feathered, forward-layered cut adds volume and movement around the face, plus the length of the layers can be tailored to each individual client. This style pairs beautifully with our Big Bouncy Blowout. Adding curtain bangs is also the 'do du jour' this season.
What shades are en vogue?
We offer the “money piece”, otherwise known as face framing highlights. This is our most requested colour, whether it’s with a balayage or standard highlights.
How can we make our hair look good fast?
A simple blow dry or updo will get you ready for an event, but the best preparation any stylist can give their client is the right shampoo, conditioner and protection for their hair. We send clients home with a prescription card of products that best suits them, and we also offer a home delivery service on our website.
Please share tips for beating humidity … If I’m in a rush I add The Clip In Fringe by Beauty Works (beautyworksonline.com) to my hair. You just clip it at the front and style it, plus because it’s real human hair, the curl or style lasts all night even in intense heat. We sell the clip in fringes and customise them for our clients if need be. Alternatively, wet the front of your hair and add a few rollers around your face to add body.
When should we book for the festive season?
Book around 4 - 6 weeks prior to any special events. Although you can try us anytime as we may have a cancellation.

Very natural balayage is a look we still love
By Kat Moss, owner of Expat Hair Studio Singapore
What’s big for hair right now?
Volume has made a come back, so big beachy waves are popular. This look can be created using GHD straighteners (sephora.sg) or the Dyson Airwrap (dyson.com.sg). If you need help with styling, Instagram videos can be helpful. I also recommend practicing with a GHD turned off so you don’t burn yourself, this way you can master the technique without being scared.
What about colours?
Very natural balayage is a look we still love, but 90’s and 2000’s styles are returning with colour being prominent. Think bold shades which add more dimension.
Any product reccos for keeping locks looking fresh?
Kevin Murphy Session Spray ($46) holds hair
for days. If you have fine hair, don’t use anything too heavy - a light volume spray won’t weigh it down. Finish with a session spray.
How can we keep hair frizz free?
In my opinion, a NKST treatment (a keratin treatment that penetrates the cuticle to reduce frizz and curl) is the best on the market for keeping hair smooth and healthy. It has completely transformed my curly hair, leaving me with waves and shine while making it easy to dry straight.
We’ve got ten minutes to get party-ready. Help! A good quick and easy last minute look will always be a messy bun, but making it sleek on top to keep it classy. Check out tutorials on YouTube and Pinterest for new ideas to follow.
When should we book our festive ‘do with you? There’s always something special about getting your hair done at Christmas. I suggest booking by 1 November 2024 for a December appointment to avoid missing out. Most of my clients book 2 - 3 appointments in advance.

Are you burnt out?
Burnout is on the rise, but how do you know for sure that you’re suffering? Dr Nithya Nahappan from Osler Health International reveals what to take note of.
New statistics by Telus Health reveal that 47% of workers in Singapore feel mentally or physically exhausted by their job. This worryingly high figure points to many of us suffering from symptoms of burnout which can often be tricky to pinpoint, meaning that we don’t know when to seek proper help. Read on to discover what signs to look out for, and what you can do to prevent the situation from worsening.
Could this be you?
Are you physically and emotionally exhausted?
Have you been withdrawing from seeing friends and family?
Does nothing makes you happy … have you lost your joie de vivre?
Have you stopped caring about eating, exercising and sleeping well?
Are you stuck in a cycle of procrastination and disappointment?
When does burnout happen?
It occurs when our bodies and minds have been subjected to chronic stress that hasn’t been addressed or managed.
What are early signs of burnout?
It’s important to spot warning signs which can creep up on you, causing you to lose sight of the person you once were. Try to recognise the below and seek external support if necessary.
Physical exhaustion
Feeling TATT (Tired All The Time)? Those suffering tend to wake up tired and go to bed tired. A telling indicator is a lack of energy overall.
Emotional exhaustion
Do you feel irritable, easily bothered and have a cynical outlook on things which you didn’t before?
Withdrawal and isolation
Are you withdrawing from people you used to spend time with because you don’t have the energy and don’t derive pleasure from the interactions like you used to?
Healthful habits stop
Often self-care is no longer important. Eating healthily, exercising and good sleep are low on your priority list.
Procrastination
Do you know what you should be doing, but can’t seem to make things happen?
Distraction (typically mindless distraction such as scrolling) is the go-to, with feelings of disappointment following.
Problem solving
Multi-tasking and problem solving become challenging at home and at work.
How to deal with burnout?
Here are a few tips to get you started.
1 Talk to someone.
2 Go light on your schedule. Be selective.
3 Prioritise self care - reading, meditation, walking, a good meal.
4 Find a hobby you enjoy and make it a

part of your life, even just once a week.
5 Learn to recognise negative thinking patterns and challenge them.
6 Reflect on triggers at work, and think about the why. “Why do I experience dread every time I receive an email?”
7 Be boundaried. Finish work on time, and create a ritual to mark the occasion to help transition into time for relaxation.
8 Take a holiday to rest, relax and reflect. You can refocus your energies, making you more productive and better equipped for your return.
9 You don’t have to be at breaking point to need help. Prevention is key.
If you think you might be burnt out, or on your way, check in with your GP. Often people with burnout experience physical symptoms and syndromes for which they may need a holistic look at their health, as well as the right support to get back on track. For a deeper insight into burnout, the book Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment without Burnout by Cal Newport (amazon.com) might help.

Don’t Get Xmas Crook!
It’s the season to be … a bit ill! Don’t let the festivities get the better of you with these tips on maintaining good health and wellbeing throughout the silly season.
The parties! The presents! The pressure! While the coming weeks are traditionally filled with much merriment, they can also play havoc with our health. As daily routines, diets and sleep patterns switch up, it’s essential that we make an effort to protect our wellbeing.
“Extensive travel overseas, stress and fatigue are all contributors to the increased incidence of illness over the festive period due to all of the planning, shopping, financial pressure, and social commitments," explains Dr. Paveena Gandhi from International Medical Clinic (imc-healthcare. com). "Each of these factors combined can weaken the immune system, making it common to feel unwell.”
Moreover, the tendency to indulge in richer foods and increased alcohol consumption during the holidays can negatively impact health. “A diet high in sweets and alcohol can impair the immune system, rendering the body more susceptible to illness," she says.
But you don’t need to steer clear of the Lindt Lindor Christmas Gift Box altogether. “Moderation is key and remember that rest is the key to recovery. In between that, have fun!” Dr. Gandhi says. Read on for more of her advice for protecting your health as we head towards the end of the year.
Christmas Tree Syndrome
Christmas Tree Syndrome refers to allergic reactions and respiratory issues triggered by real Christmas trees. Sneezing, wheezing, coughing, a stuffy nose, runny or itchy eyes, and difficulty breathing are all symptoms. Bah, humbug!
THE CAUSE: Dust, residual pollens, natural oils, saps, and other allergens that thrive on Christmas trees like firs, pines, and spruces.
These allergens can mask mould that flourishes in warmer indoor environments like Singapore, and triggers negative reactions.
THE PREVENTION: Shake or hose down your tree outside to remove debris before bringing it indoors. Once up and looking pretty, limit its time inside to reduce triggers.
THE CURE: Consider an artificial tree which should also be cleaned before use. If you must go au naturel, use an air purifier and regularly vacuum and dust the area. Antihistamines, nasal sprays, or other allergy medications can help.
GET SERIOUS: If the irritation is too much to conduct everyday life as usual, it may be sensible to make a fake tree your festive friend.
Christmas
Cough
A cough is not just for Christmas, but why does it seem particularly bad around the party season? Its frequency or severity might increase due to specific conditions or behaviours associated with this time of year.
THE CAUSE: Viral infections caused by “winter weather” can lead to ongoing coughing as the body clears mucus. Asthma and chronic bronchitis can also be a culprit, as can allergies and irritants caused by tobacco smoke or fumes from cooking (so, a great reason to keep out of the kitchen!).
THE PREVENTION: Invest in a humidifier. Adding moisture to the air can help to ease throat irritation.
THE CURE: Drink plenty of fluids to thin mucus and soothe your throat. Reduce exposure to smoke, strong fragrances and allergens.
GET SERIOUS: If a cough persists for more than a few weeks, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms like weight loss, night sweats, high fever, significant chest pain, difficulty breathing or coughing with blood stains, it’s imperative that you seek medical advice for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
The common cold can be the gift that keeps on giving over the holidays. It presents as a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, primarily affecting your nose and throat.
The Common Cold
THE CAUSE: The virus spreads the most through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Also beware of close contact such as shaking hands, and indirect contact like touching contaminated surfaces like doorknobs, phones or handrails.
THE PREVENTION: Practice frequent handwashing, avoid contact with infected individuals, cover your mouth when unwell, and consider avoiding the mistletoe.
THE CURE: There’s no cure but symptoms usually resolve within 7-10 days. Rest, stay hydrated, take over-the-counter cold medications, consume warm fluids like tea or soup, and try a nasal spray.
GET SERIOUS: If symptoms are severe and you have a fever above 38.5°C (101.3°F) or a fever lasting more than three days, see your GP.
Too much alcohol in too little time?
This serious condition can lead to health complications, including coma, brain damage, and even death if not treated promptly.
THE CAUSE: Alcohol poisoning is typically caused by binge drinking - the body can only metabolise one standard drink per hour. Drinking more encourages alcohol to accumulate in the blood which can lead to intoxication or poisoning.
THE PREVENTION: Avoid drinking large quantities quickly (more than five alcoholic drinks for men and four drinks for women on a single occasion). Don’t drink on an empty stomach or mix alcohol with other prescription drugs.
THE CURE: Stay hydrated, pace yourself and be aware of the signs of poisoning so you can get help fast if necessary.
GET SERIOUS: If someone is unconscious, place them on their side to prevent choking. Don’t leave them alone, and monitor their breathing and alertness. Don't try to “sober them up” - call emergency services right away.
The flu, or influenza, is a contagious viral infection that primarily affects the nose, throat, and lungs. It’s generally more severe than the common cold and can lead to serious complications.
The Flu
Indigestion
THE CAUSE: The flu spreads in similar ways to the common cold. The typical incubation period is one to four days.
THE PREVENTION: Get the flu shot which is updated yearly. Practice good hygiene and restrict close interactions with infected individuals.
THE CURE: If you get sick with the flu, influenza antiviral drugs may be a treatment option. They work best when started ideally no later than two days after your flu symptoms begin. Failing that, a sofa, plenty of rest and fluids, and Colin From Accounts on repeat should sort you out.
GET SERIOUS: Seek help if you experience shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, sudden dizziness or confusion, severe or persistent vomiting, or if symptoms improve but return with a high fever and cough.
Symptoms include pain or discomfort in the belly, bloating or a feeling of fullness, nausea, and an icky or painful feeling in your upper abdomen or chest, typically after eating or drinking.
THE CAUSE: Indigestion is usually due to a group of symptoms that often occur together.
THE PREVENTION: While your mother-in-law’s roast potatoes might be next level, go easy. Eat smaller but more frequent meals and try to identify and avoid foods that worsen your symptoms. Sorry to be a party pooper, but avoiding substances that increase reflux will help such as high-fat foods, chocolate, colas and acidic juices.
THE CURE: Consider antacids to reduce or neutralise stomach acid. Try to reduce stress through mindfulness and relaxation exercises, and stock up on sleep.
GET SERIOUS: Seek urgent help if you experience persistent vomiting or pain, unintentional weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or feel like food is getting stuck.
All Is Calm
A
quiet revolution in reading is taking place in Singapore, bonding people through a passion for books and peace.
Head to CIMB Plaza in Singapore on a Saturday afternoon, and you’ll witness a truly unusual sight: fourteen adults, aged from their late 20's to late 50's, sitting in silence together; no talking, no phones in sight, no fraught scrolling, no straining for a Selfie. This serene scene may sound like something from the 1980's, but it is a modern-day phenomenon, all thanks to Singapore’s inaugural Silent Book Club®.
In today’s world, reading a book is experiencing a renaissance. ANZA’s very own book club (anza.org.sg/groups/
book-club) is constantly growing in size, with several ‘mini-clubs’ running in unison. Celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon have long been advocates of a thrilling page-turner, and now younger stars such as Emma Watson and Dakota Johnson are making books cool again with their own book clubs, igniting a love for literature among new audiences.
But while most traditional book clubs focus on specific genres or certain tomes and lively discussions, Singapore has embraced the rise of the Silent Book Club, a movement with over 1,000 “chapters”
THERE’S A LOVELY SENSE OF CONNECTION, EVEN THOUGH THERE’S LITTLE COMMUNICATION
(locations) in over 50 countries around the world. Led by volunteers, the clubs eschew assigned reading. Members simply gather in bars, cafes, bookstores, libraries, or online to read together in hushed camaraderie.
LOCAL CHAPTER
Silent Book Club is a concept that originated in San Francisco in 2012. The founders, Guinevere de la Mare and Laura Gluhanich, envisioned a gathering where participants could enjoy reading without the pressure of analysis. “We launched because reading with friends enriches our lives and makes us happy,” they share on the global website (silentbook.club) Here on the red dot, the local chapter
Above and right: Global Silent Book Club sessions
Sisilia Kodyat
Here on the red dot, the local chapter was established by Sisilia Kodyat (@bookhoardersunite). Frustrated by her busy lifestyle, she sought a solution to her struggle to find time for reading a book after a full day at her banking job. “I loved reading but I also have a husband, Instagram, Pinterest, Disney+, and so on!" she says. "I was finding that there were so many distractions taking me away from my passion."
In May 2022, Sisilia and her fellow book-loving friend Jennifer Tan (@ thetirelessreader) launched Silent Book Club Singapore as a way to carve out their own reading time while welcoming others seeking similar solace in a communal space. “I’d heard about the global community and researched online about setting up the chapter here. After registering, I set a date, time and location for people to meet,” she says, admitting that initially, it was just her and Jennifer at Starbucks in Raffles Place! "It was hard at first for us not to chat, but over time we learned to focus on our reading.” Two years on, Silent Book Club Singapore boasts over 1,120 active members.
To maintain order, the club adheres to a few rules. Sessions are advertised on Meetup (meetup.com) and despite the huge number of members, Sisilia sticks to welcoming only fourteen participants once a month. (“There is a huge waiting list!”).
Using a stopwatch, sessions typically last two hours, beginning with a strict half-hour introduction from everyone to share their chosen book. This is followed by 90 minutes of heads down, no talking dedication. Says Sisilia, “Everyone is wellbehaved and sticks to the regulations.

There’s no pressure to share anything about yourself apart from what you’re reading, so while everyone is gathered together, it is also a private event without any social pressure.” She continues, “You can come and sit quietly to read without the pressure to provide an intellectual opinion. It’s perfect for introverts.”
SENSE OF SOLIDARITY
The participants of Silent Book Club Singapore come from diverse backgrounds. “One member is a busy mum who uses the session for dedicated ‘me-time,’" Sisilia shares. ”Another member signed up because he wanted to meet people after moving to the red dot from Canada. He says the club takes his mind off of work and he values the time he can spend to enjoy focused reading," she continues. "Somebody else claimed that she had no discipline to read alone, but after joining us she now sets an alarm every day to read for 30 minutes."
As for Sisilia, the club provides her with devoted reading time and small connections with fellow book fans. “The variety of reading material that members bring is fascinating, spanning across
Chinese texts to modern fiction and Greek mythology. This provides inspiration for all of us when choosing our next book,” she says. “Even though there’s little communication between us, there’s a lovely sense of connection with the people you’re sitting and reading with. It creates a calming sense of solidarity.” Looking ahead, Sisilia hopes to secure a more permanent space in Singapore where Silent Book Club can take place, allowing for greater participation. “My dream is that we continue to thrive and provide a sanctuary for those looking for a quiet place to escape and read,” she says. “Our club isn’t just about reading; it’s about fostering a deep sense of community and helping people find joy in books once again.”
In a world that often feels overwhelming, Silent Book Club Singapore offers a tranquil refuge, highlighting how literature can connect us, and how connection is possible without the need for speaking.
The club meets every third Saturday afternoon of the month at CIMB Plaza. Find out more at meetup.com/ silent-book-club-singapore

What common money myths mislead expats in Singapore?
In conversations with expatriates and locals in Singapore, several misconceptions about the financial landscape for foreigners often arise. As a major financial hub known for its stringent regulatory environment, it’s important to understand the local landscape to make better informed monetary decisions. Read on for clarity and advice on some common confusing matters.
MYTH 1 Expats Are Not Eligible for Tax Relief Schemes
One of the most common misconceptions is that expatriates cannot enjoy tax relief schemes available to residents, but this is not the case. Those with dependents living with them may claim tax reliefs, along with deductions for business expenses and life insurance premiums. Furthermore, the Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) is an excellent option for tax relief, allowing foreigners to contribute up to $35,700 annually. Notably, only 50% of the amounts withdrawn from the SRS are taxable, making it a great savings tool.
MYTH 2 Expats Cannot Access Affordable Medical Insurance
Another misconception is that expatriates are unable to purchase local insurance plans, which results in expensive medical coverage. However, expats can purchase Integrated Shield Plans, which are generally more affordable
than many international options. These plans are designed to provide adequate medical coverage tailored to the needs of those living in Singapore, making healthcare more accessible.
MYTH 3 Expats Are Barred from Buying Property
Many individuals wrongly assume that expats cannot invest in the SG real estate market. It’s crucial to understand that foreigners can purchase condominiums and certain landed properties, although they must pay an additional Stamp Duty of 60% (some nationalities are exempt). Additionally, there are financing options available, including bank loans, which can assist in property investment endeavours.
MYTH 4 Investing in Singapore is Challenging for Expats
Another widespread myth is that investment opportunities in Singapore are challenging for expatriates. This is not the case; the investment process is designed to be user-friendly and offers numerous advantages. Since expats do not contribute to Singapore's Central Provident Fund (CPF), they can explore
various investment avenues more freely. Singapore’s stable and secure investment climate also fosters potential growth.
MYTH 5 Insurance Coverage is Limited to Singapore
Lastly, many expats believe that insurance coverage is confined to their stay in Singapore. In fact, life insurance and other policies can provide benefits that continue even after leaving the country. This feature is important for expatriates, as it ensures ongoing financial protection regardless of their location.
In conclusion, separating fact from fiction is crucial for those navigating Singapore’s financial landscape. By debunking these myths, expats can make informed financial decisions that positively impact their lives here. Have you encountered any other misconceptions? Sharing these experiences can help foster a more informed expatriate community.
The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. You are advised to seek independent tax advice from suitably qualified professionals before making any decision as to the tax implications of any investment.

Lending A Hand
Investing in a property down under doesn’t have to mean heading to the bank. Read on for guidance on where to turn to get the best financial deal for you.
It’s a common misconception that it’s difficult for expats to borrow money to invest in property back in Australia.
A standard error that many expatriates make is seeking a loan directly from their bank. This often creates challenges when dealing with the major Australian banks - NAB, Westpac, ANZ, and Commonwealth Bank - each of which has its own lending criteria. If one bank declines your loan application, it doesn’t mean that others will do the same. Therefore, it’s essential to consult with an expat lending expert to explore your options effectively.
What if your partner isn’t from Australia?
When considering borrowing funds to invest in Australian property, it’s crucial to understand the regulations surrounding foreign investment. You should take into account title ownership and the consequences of seeking joint ownership on any acquisition. For overseas residents (as distinct from expatriates) wanting to purchase property, there are several factors to consider, including foreign purchaser’s duty, land tax surcharges, and the need for FIRM approval. These can introduce additional costs and complexities to the purchasing process.
How do banks assess borrowing power when it comes to expats?
When evaluating foreign earnings banks consider exchange rate risk,
typically considering only 50 - 80% of income denominated in foreign currencies. Another frequent challenge is calculating household expenses. Many expatriates have a significant portion of their living costs covered by their employer while residing abroad. However, banks often apply the minimum household expenditure measure (HEM) when determining borrowing capacity. Therefore, it’s essential to seek guidance from an expat lending specialist. They can evaluate your situation and advise you on your chances of obtaining lending approval based on your circumstances.
How can an expat lending specialist help you?
Similar to a conventional mortgage broker, an expat lending specialist
Level 12, 37 York Street, Sydney, NSW, 2000 avenyou.net.au
can assist you in overcoming the difficulties of investing in real estate while residing abroad. One significant advantage is access to a wider variety of lenders offering more flexible interest rates and borrowing criteria than the major banks. They are more adept at finding the best deals available in the market and - crucially - can help you obtain a loan even if you have previously faced rejections from your bank.
Another advantage is the annual rate reviews conducted by lending specialists to guarantee that you continue to receive the best available deal. It is essential to evaluate any loan every 12 months, especially given the current economic climate and fluctuations in interest rates.
Avenyou Expat Lending offer a complete service to Australian residents living overseas and is ideally placed to help expats navigate the challenges of purchasing property in Australia.

XMAS
Innovative Dishes
Innovative menu ideas enliven both our tastebuds and the festivities. Many ANZA households have domestic helpers who will gladly provide their festive recipes for everyone to experience. Statistics indicate Indonesia, Philippines and Myanmar are main sources of domestic helpers for Singapore.
Indonesian Inclusions
Nina, a mother of two young children from Lampung village, Sumatra island, explained that ayam rica-rica (spicy chicken) is a festive favourite, simmered with herbs and spices. Sup brenebon is ubiquitous on 25 December, the warm soup highlighting red kidney-beans and meat, enhanced with cloves, nutmeg and pepper. Nastar are buttery pineapple-filled individual round cakes. Klapertaart (coconuttart), of Dutch origin, might be something helpers are familiar with. Coconut water, lime juice and coffee add to the fun.
“Selamat Hari Natal!”
Philippine Fare
Perhaps helpers can replicate queso de bola. This ball of edam cheese with red-wax casing is almost always included for Christmas, eaten with bread rolls and ham. Lechon, or whole suckling-pig, is a star attraction, though not easy for home preparation. From a farm in south-central Philippines, Natividad suggested caldereta (cubed pork and potatoes stewed in tomato sauce). Nati, who relocated to Canada, also mentioned steamed purple rice-cakes (puto bumbong) being Christmas favourites, though without hollow bamboo-tubes, they might be

difficult to make. Alternatively, consider leche flan (crème caramel), decorated appropriately. An easyto-prepare item is pancit, served at festivals for its connotation of long and happy lives. The fried ricevermicelli dish contains meat and vegetables. Quench thirsts with San Miguel beer, lime juice and coffee.
“Feliz Navidad!”
Myanmar Morsels
One of the most well-known and looked-forward-to Christmas dishes is sticky-rice mixed with red beans, placed in bambootubes and barbecued. Or the rice can be wrapped securely in banana leaves prior to cooking, presented as individual square parcels, tied with festive red strings. According to Suk from Mawlamyine township in Mon State, who supports her aged parent and caregiver sibling in Myanmar, sanwin makin (semolina cake) made with semolina flour, coconut-milk and eggs, is traditionally sprinkled with white sesame or poppy seeds. “This cake is not so sweet, so many people like it because the taste is delicious and poppy seeds are nice to chew on,” Suk shared. Satiate thirsts with milk tea or Burbrit Burma Pale Ale.
“Pyaw Shwin Thaw Christmas Hpyit Par Zay!”
Including traditional festive dishes or beverages from other cultures provides new insights and tastes, as well as opening sparkling conversations at the table.
“Merry Christmas!”
Born in Adelaide, Raelene Tan is an etiquette consultant and a food and travel writer. She has authored five books and has been a regular guest on radio and television.

As the festive season rolls in, eating, drinking and being merry becomes a way of life. Along with chocolate for breakfast being perfectly acceptable, more alcohol than usual often plays a part in the celebrations, from Christmas dinner to New Year’s parties. Whether it’s a bold red to complement a hearty roast or a sparkling Champagne to toast the holidays, the right wine can really set the mood. Here, ANZA gathers advice from some of Singapore's finest wine experts to ensure that your beverage choices this year positively fizz, not flop. Cheers!

What makes a good wine retailer?
One with a varied selection, knowledge, and endless passion for wine! Their selection will usually cater to various budgets and they should be able to give recommendations based on how much you want to spend and your drinking occasion.
I’m interested in learning more about wine, but don’t know where to begin ...
Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET) ( thebeverageclique.com ) is a good place to start. They provide courses that cater to various levels of interest, from novice to professional, and several certified teaching organisations in Singapore collaborate with them. Some courses can be
completed over a weekend, while others require a bit more dedication.
How can I keep track of the wines I’ve tried over time?
Apps like Vivino, WineSearcher or Notes are helpful for this. Otherwise, a good old-fashioned notebook will do just fine!
How do I develop my own wine palate and not be led by others?
Attend wine-related tastings and dinners, visit different wine regions and chat with producers, or create or join a tasting group with other enthusiasts. Basically, expose yourself to trying a large variety of wines from everywhere. You'll quickly get a sense of what you enjoy and start to notice the wines you keep returning to. Most importantly, stay curious and be open to trying new options. Our palates continue to develop as we get older so a variety of wine you may not have enjoyed in your 20s could easily become your new favourite in your 40s or 50s.
What’s exciting in wine right now?
We’re seeing a shift in preferences in Singapore. Drinkers used to seek out big, bold, high-alcohol reds, whereas now we're noticing customers gravitating towards lighter-bodied, chillable reds with moderate levels of alcohol.
Why do you think this is?
For starters, it’s hot out and chillable reds are more refreshing. They’re versatile and can be paired with several types of food, from hot pot to grilled duck. Also, they're riding on the coattails of no and low alcohol beverages which are a good option for those wanting to drink less.
WINE Q’s YOU’RE TOO SHY TO ASK
Worried about getting the budget, variety and etiquette just right? Director of Petersons Wines Singapore, Joe Keats, answers your drinking dilemmas. info@petersonswines.com.sg
We’ve got a small budget and a big dinner party with wine afficionados. Help!
You don’t have to spend big bucks to get good wine, but you do need to know what to look for. Generally speaking, wines from "the S countries" provide the best value in Singapore - South Africa, South America, Spain and ‘Straya! Let a professional wine nerd know your menu and your budget, and get their ideas. Oh, and don’t leave your choices until the day of the dinner!
Which wine pairs with Christmas curry?
It depends very much on your curry, but conventional wisdom is a slightly sweet (off-dry) white wine, which in Singapore is not a bad idea. If you’re somewhere cooler, or in aircon, an Aussie Shiraz with soft tannins would work really well.
Can you ever judge a wine by its label? Yes, but maybe not the way you’d think! I’m always suspicious of wines with extravagant packaging; aside from being bad for the planet, you’d think good wine wouldn’t need bling. That said, I do appreciate a stylish or amusing label. It just don’t make the stuff inside taste any better. The same applies to having French words on the label - it doesn’t make the inside liquid magically superior.
Can I really add ice?
Absolutely! If that’s how you like it, then that’s how you should have it. The same goes for chilling reds, or adding soda.
Most acceptable way to chill wine?
A bucket of ice water is quickest way to do this. Salt in the water speeds up chilling it a little more too.
Please recommend good bubbles that won’t break the bank ...
Spanish Cava is great value, but as with all wine styles, there’s better and worse examples. If you have Champagne tastes but not the budget, a "traditional method" wine is generally how you find

something similar at a better price. I look for a winery that specialises in sparkling wine, rather than someone who does a bit of everything. Our very creatively named Sparkling White ($45), and our famous Pink Blush, ($39) are two great bubblies at less than $50.
What should Champagne be served in?
Great quantities and great glassware! A flute is not as good as most white wine glasses, as there’s not much space for aromas to form. Something with a bit of a "bowl" in the glass is better for flavours, but flutes maintain fizz for longer. (Mine has never lasted long enough to go flat!). Crystal glasses are better as you get a finer

lip on the glass, and they stimulate the release of gas from the liquid a little more.
Screwtop or cork - is this still a thing? Sadly, yes. Nearly all wine is better off under a screwcap, but we all have this notion that the cork makes wine better. New World wines (“not Europe”) are often unafraid to treat their wine in the best way possible, but it can spell financial disaster for wineries, due to consumer misconceptions around corks and quality. A small percentage of wines, usually reds with a lot of tannins, will benefit from a cork. I wince when people screw up their nose at a screwcap.
Wine in a box: yay or nay?
A can or box is perfectly legitimate. They’re sometimes great value if you’re on a budget, and the best choice if you’re on a picnic, boat, camping, and so on.
Where’s the surprisingly good wine coming from right now?
The little guys. Smaller producers now have great access to everything they need to aid fantastic winemaking, and they tend to be more adventurous (using lesser known grapes, or classic grapes presented differently) than the big boys.

Best sparkly to kick off
What to look for: Sparkling is all about the bubbles and bright aromas; it should be fresh and vibrant. Christmas is the perfect time to splurge on a vintage sparkling with that extra bit of complexity.
What to choose: Stefano Lubiana Grande Vintage Brut 2011, $95
Christmas starters
Pate & terrines
What to look for: It can depend on the ingredients, but a couple of great allrounders to get things going are rose or light savoury rustic reds.
What to choose: Nocturne Rose, $49; Stargazer Rada Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier, $67; Koerner La Korse Sangiovese blend, $55
Oysters
What to look for: A splash of fizz over the oyster to enhance the flavours makes a perfect match. Or if you're into crisp whites, Clare Valley Riesling is a great option.
What to choose: Stefano Lubiana Brut Reserve NV, $68; Vickery Watervale Riesling, $39
Shellfish
What to look for: One of the most versatlie wine styles that complements an array of shellfish is chardonnay. Everything from light, crisp, cool-climate chardonnays to the richer styles of the Margaret River. What to choose: Paringa Estate Peninsula Chardonnay, $48; Stargazer Chardonnay, $90; Larry Cherubino Chardonnay, $79
The Main Event
Roast Beef
What to look for: Beef cries out for a good red wine with a mouthful of flavour. Depending on whether you like something a little drier, or a wine full of dark cherries and spice, I'd choose a cabernet or shiraz.
What to choose: Powell & Son Barossa Valley Shiraz, $60; Parker Estate Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon, $54
Cheese
What to look for: If you like the bite of a hard cheese like an aged cheddar, opt for a nice medium bodied wine such as a bordeaux blend or Tempranillo. If the creaminess of a soft cheese is more your style, a beguiling pinot or a cheeky chardonnay is your go-to.
What to choose: Nocturne Cabernets, $55; Koerner “The Clare” Red, $55; Marco Lubiano Pinot Noir, $79; Montalto Chardonnay, $73
Christmas Desserts
What to look for: There's nothing like a good Christmas pudding paired with a rich, sweet wine whether it be a dessert wine or a fortified wine.

FIZZ FACTS
Catherine C Wong, Wine Ambassador & US Brand Manager at Treasury Wine Estates ( tweglobal.com) reveals her rules for getting fizz right.
FACT #1 There are two key differences between Champagne and sparkling wine: the bubbly wine must come from the Champagne region in France to be called Champagne. They’re both created with the “traditional method” where the second fermentation of the still wine happens in the sealed bottle and the carbon dioxide is trappedhence, creating the bubbles.
FACT #2 When it comes to premium sparkling wine, there are a few things to take note of. Look for fine, effervescent bubbles and an inviting bouquet of floral and fruity aromas. A quality sparkling wine should also showcase delightful layers of citrus and green fruit flavours, a round, textured mouthfeel, and a longlasting finish.
FACT #3 The traditional serving temperature for Champagne and sparkling wine is 6 - 8C for the best experience.
FACT #4 A popular fizz of choice for the end of 2024 is our 19 Crimes Cali Gold Sparkling designed by Snoop Dog ($37, redmart.lazada.sg). Some excellent food pairings to this include seafood, fresh oysters, salmon, and grilled lobster.
FACT #5 We also recommend Crimes Hard Chardonnay ($27), and 19 Crimes Red Blend ($38, both available from fairprice.com.sg). The Hard Chardonnay displays tropical fruits balanced with criminally toasty oak and butterscotch notes. The Red Blend boasts berry flavours complimented by cedary spice and chocolatey vanilla notes to balance out the fruitiness.

10 Scotts Road, 228211 grandhyattsingapore.com
We're thrilled to hear Pete’s Place is back! Has it changed much?
Pete’s Place has made a comeback as part of the Grand Hyatt’s renovation after it closed in 2020. Fans will be pleased to hear that it's still very much the spot for authentic Italian comfort food, and while the 80’s-style red checkered tablecloths are gone (they've been replaced by a more refined interior), the cosy atmosphere remains.
What about the iconic brick wall?!
It's still holding its own, adding a familiar warmth to the space and standing as a backdrop to the countless conversations and memories that have been made here over the past 50 years.
The pressure is on for Pete's Place to be better than ever. How does it stand out?
With so many restaurants focused on being “Instagrammable” these days, it’s
easy to end up at venues that look good but fall short on taste. Pete’s Place is different, however, the quality of the food is still the key feature here. Dishes are consistently flavourful and comforting, never disappointing, and they continue to deliver with brilliant execution.
Do share more ...
The new menu stays true to its Italian roots with the focus on high-quality, honest food, but the reopening of Pete's Place embraces the evolution of Italian cuisine as well. There are some great new antipasti options like Suppli Romani and the Piadina Pugliese, a
nod to Chef Catania’s heritage. You’ll also find dishes like Costoletta alla Milanese and Vitello Tonnato that are bound to become favourites.
What are your personal faves?
This is a toughie! You don't often see carbonara with bucatini, the creamy sauce fills the hollow noodles which takes me back to Rome! And don't forget the pizzas! Thin, crispy crusts, made from dough fermented overnight, topped with sauce crafted from San Marzano tomatoes. Authentic and perfect!
What else is new since Chef Salvatore Giorgio Catania took over?
There’s a brand-new private dining room, a grand wine cellar, and even a chef’s table offering kitchen-to-tableside service for more intimate, personalised dining.
Best seat in the house?
You can’t go wrong with any seat, but for me a spot by the red brick wall - it’s been there since day one keeping a timeless feel, ideal for a relaxed meal in a superb atmosphere.
Where are you taking us?
To 27° West, where Indian culinary traditions converge with modern techniques. Nestled in Orchard Road, you can indulge in a tapestry of Indian cuisine, from street food to reinvented classics.
Any backstory?
The man behind the magic is Chef Varun Inamdar, an Indian culinary superstar. With over three million social media followers, he's famous for his signature Afro, snazzy glasses, and larger than life charisma. Past clientele include celebrities Barack Obama, Queen Rania of Jordan, Donald Trump, and Indian Prime Minister Modi.
Wow! So this place is high-end?
More casual with an upscale touch. The outdoor bar lounge is a great spot to unwind with small plates under the stars. Inside, Indian subcontinental influences weave throughout, from the menu to the décor, with colourful accents and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem.
Okay, hit us with the food ... We kicked off with Kale Gol Gappa Puri Chaat; crispy, fried kale served with gol gappa puri (lovely little puffs of flavour) and house-made sauces which made for a winning blend of crunchy, tangy and spicy. Next up was Chicken 65, a classic South Indian dish seasoned with green chillies. The chicken was tender, meticulously spiced, and bursting with

flavour. The richness of the spices paired with the lightness of the chicken made it a dreamy appetiser.
How were the mains?
Varun’s signature Butter Chicken is the standout - tender pieces of chicken bathed in a creamy sauce that had us scraping the plate. Another dish that wowed us was the Crabmeat Thecha Thermidor. This features crab from India’s coastline, topped with a spicy Thecha sauce (a popular chilli garlic condiment from India). We also tried the Smoked Lamb Rack, Beliram. The lamb was rubbed with Kolhapuri masala and roasted over an open fire, giving it a smoky, robust taste.
Anything for the veggies amongst us?
The Bagara Baingan is an enticing meatless option. Smoky eggplant is served with starfruit chips and offers a delightful balance of spices and textures.
What about dessert?
Don't miss the Chocolate Mess, a dessert specially concocted for the Obamas. It’s a rich dark chocolate ganache with a mix of cranberry and raspberry, a perfect blend of tart and sweet.
And the drinks?
The craft cocktails at 27° West are as delectable as the food. We started with the Madrasi Margarita, a tropical twist on the classic margarita with tequila infused with pistola joven, mango, ginger, calamansi, and tamarind. We also loved the Kaurava Night Cap, a bittersweet blend of Hendrick’s Flora Adora, Campari, vermouth, strawberry, and ghee.
When's the best time to head here?
Whenever you’re ready for a culinary journey! For a midweek treat, don’t miss Ladies’ Night every Wednesday. 27° West is perfect for friends wanting a fun, relaxed evening. And if it’s good enough for the Obamas …

Craving natural beauty and a colder climate, Singapore expat Belamie Peddle embarked on a family trip to Austria’s Lechweg Trail.
“When it comes to family holidays, my husband Alain and two boys Tayen, 16, and Mika, 14, and I are all about the great outdoors. We crave adventures that involve hiking, biking, and exploring nature rather than lounging by a hotel pool. This year, as summer approached in Singapore, we found ourselves dreaming of snowy peaks, lush landscapes, and fresh
mountain air. A trip to Austria's famous Lechweg Trail caught our attention, promising an escape into wilderness along what is known as the last unspoiled river in Europe.
Immensely appealing, it would take us away from the sweltering heat, far from the usual overun tourist spots in Europe, and straight into nature. I knew that my sons would also relish the hearty local food of meat and cheese.
We had the option to hike or bike in the
Mika, Belamie, Alain and Tayen on the trail
area, and we let the boys make the final decision: hiking it was!
Stunning scenery
After a bit of research online, we enlisted the help of Wild Rover Travel (wildrovertravel.com). They helped us out by booking charming chalets and small hotels along the trail so we didn’t have to think about where we’d be sleeping. They also provided us with an app for navigation and ensured we had all the necessary information for our journey. While we could have hiked with other people, we decided to go it alone, preferring to have the freedom to spend our days as we pleased, just the four of us.
The Lechweg Trail promised to be anything but a typical “fly-and-flop” holiday. Over the course of eight days (with one day for travelling), we hiked approximately 125 kilometres through stunning alpine scenery, starting in idyllic Lech am Arlberg and hiking the Lechweg to Neuschwanstein Castle in Füssen, Bavaria.
We traversed pine forests, postcardperfect villages, and alpine meadows heaving with vibrant wildflowers. Each day felt like a new chapter, and our daily routine followed a simple rhythm: waking up to a hearty breakfast, hitting
the trails in the morning, and stopping at a local supermarket for fresh bread, meats and cheeses for a picnic along the way. We’d often throw in some music from our portable speaker, creating a memorable soundtrack of our adventure against the backdrop of nature.
The evenings were left unplanned, allowing us to explore local eateries in cosy local villages before hitting the sack at one of the pre-arranged accommodations. These varied from 3 to 4 stars - nothing fancy, but each stay was clean and welcoming.
While we took on the Lechweg Trail at our own pace, we were never truly alone. A few fellow hikers shared the path, and we formed a friendly rapport with a Dutch family we kept bumping into. Amidst the landscapes, we discovered two breathtaking lakes, Formarinsee and Alpsee, that beckoned us in for a refreshing dip. One day, we took a ski lift up the mountains and stumbled upon a couple getting married whilst being serenaded by traditional Austrian Alphorn - a magical scene.
Changing landscape
Though we generally enjoyed pleasant weather, one day tested our mettle. Caught in a downpour without adequate gear, we trudged a few kilometres through the rain, quickly realising it perhaps wasn’t the best use of our holiday time. Thankfully, there are buses available along the trail to rescue weary (and wet!) hikers, so you never feel truly stranded. Another lasting memory was when we found ourselves in the village of Maurach am Achensee, set at the foot of Mount Vigolana, which boasted a traditional Austrian spa. I
WE TRAVERSED PINE FORESTS, POSTCARDPERFECT VILLAGES, AND ALPINE MEADOWS
was excited to try out the local custom of enjoying the facilities au naturel, but this left Tayan and Mika horrified, so they opted for mini-golf instead!
As we continued through charming villages, we couldn’t help but admire the meticulous flower boxes adorning the windows of the houses. The kaleidoscope of colours - vibrant reds, yellows, and purples were outstanding.
With the Lech River constantly by our side we all became experts on its melifluous nature and marvelled at how it transformed with the changing landscape. At times narrow and meandering, it would suddenly widen into a majestic body of water reflecting the blue sky. The kids often debated the river’s taste and clarity as we stopped to sip from its cool waters.
While the trail itself was moderate in difficulty, it wouldn’t suit families with young children due to the long walking distances covered each day. However, for families with older children it’s a hidden gem for those looking for easy discoveries surrounded by incredible landscapes, without the chaos of crowds.
My favourite part of our holiday was simply being together with my family, immersed in stunning surroundings and enjoying the perfect climate - crisp blue skies and clement temperatures. Tayen would say his highlight was being able to legally order a beer aged sixteen! (Much to the annoyance of his younger brother!).
While we do enjoy exploring new places and embarking on new experiences, I can’t help but feel that we’ll be returning to Austria in the future. The Lechweg Trail was a sanctuary where adventure and the earth reign, and an ideal destination for families seeking to reconnect with nature and each other. There’s so much more to discover there.”

ANZA Netball donned their best pink tees to support Team SG at OCBC Arena.
By EMMA BIBBY.
What a spectacular day it was for ANZA Netball at the 2024 Mixes Nations Cup. On 7 September, our enthusiastic group of sixty players and their families gathered at OCBC Arena, all decked out in bright pink “It’s a Great Day for Netball” t-shirts, ready to support Team Singapore in the finals.
The excitement was palpable as we watched the matches unfold. The Singapore Vandas faced a tough game against Kenya, losing 61 - 33. Despite the defeat, their resilience was commendable. Kenya showcased impressive skill and energy, leading to a victory with a remarkable 92% shooting accuracy.
In other matches, the United Arab Emirates secured the bronze medal after defeating Ireland 52 - 46 in the third-place playoff. Meanwhile, the Singapore A team concluded their tournament on a high note, triumphing over Canada with a score of 61 - 38 in the fifth-place classification match.
The ANZA girls had the chance to meet Team Singapore in person during special appearances at the Fan Zone. Adding to the excitement, two of our talented ANZA Netball players lit up the arena during the mid-match entertainment, shooting goals and rallying support from the crowd. Waving Singapore flags, our players truly represented the spirit and excitement of the sport.
A huge thank you to Netball Singapore for inviting ANZA Netball to be part of this incredible event. It was a day brimming with fun and camaraderie, leaving our young athletes inspired and excited for the netball season ahead. To all aspiring players, remember to dream big and work hard - your passion and dedication could one day take you to the international stage!

Making a difference in Uganda
This year saw ANZA Cycling supporting African sport, providing a reminder of the power of compassion with the community.
By PETE WILLIAMSON
In the summer of 2024, ANZA Cycling Club made a significant impact by donating cycling kits, helmets, shoes and equipment to the Masaka Cycling Club (MCC) in Uganda. This act of kindness not only transformed the lives of young cyclists in Masaka, but also sent a powerful message of support for African sport. It all started when ANZA Cycling discovered the difference MCC was making in African sports. During a bike pack tour in Kyrgyzstan, ANZA committee member Peter met Australian ultra-endurance rider ‘MTB Eric,’ who shared stories around the campfire about how he and fellow rider Ross Burrage, through the Cotton-On Foundation, were supporting Masaka CC.
In 2015, Miiro Michael, a social worker and cycling enthusiast from Masaka, noticed young boys racing bicycles used for chores. He formed Masaka CC to harness local talent and engage youth in community work. Despite being a wheelchair user, Michael’s passion for cycling drove him to create the club, which now includes many girls and boys.
Four years later, Miiro met Ross Burrage, the club’s ambassador and main fundraiser. Ross helped build a clubhouse filled with donated equipment which attracted young competitors including Florence Nakaggwa, 17, who was initially spotted while she was gathering charcoal. Miiro encouraged her to race and in 2019 Florence became the first woman to join MCC and was soon appointed captain.
Hearing about Masaka CC in Kyrgyzstan
FOR MANY, IT WAS THEIR FIRST TIME RECEIVING PROFESSIONALGRADE GEAR
Immediate impact
Peter discovered how Florence had encouraged nine more girls to join MCC, and how she strove to motivate others by sharing her journey and emphasising hard work and having dreams.
Inspired by such a powerful story, ANZA Cycling was inspired to help. In August 2023, Peter and a group of Kyrgyzstan cycling tourists watched 21 year-old Florence become the first Ugandan female to compete in the UCI World Champs in Glasgow, Scotland as their tour concluded.
Understanding the profound impact that proper equipment could have on Florence and MCC, ANZA initiated a campaign to collect and donate cycling kit and gear. The response was overwhelming and a first shipment was sent to Uganda in April 2024. To manage the huge amount of supplies, ANZA decided to ship only ANZA kits, helmets, shoes, crank sets, and seats to Masaka. The non-ANZA kit found a home in the Philippines, thanks to Singaporebased cyclist Carmela Pearson, who organised distribution to former national cycling coach Joselito Santos, prioritising kids, senior citizens, and promising young cyclists.
When the shipment arrived at Masaka Cycling Club, the excitement was palpable. The sight of new helmets, pristine cycling kits, and topnotch equipment filled the youngsters with joy. For many, it was their first time receiving professional-grade gear, and the impact was immediate.
ANZA Cycling’s investment in MCC exemplifies the power of global collaboration in nurturing sports talent in Africa. By providing local athletes with essential gear, we're collaborating to foster health, teamwork, and resilience in areas less fortunate than our own. This initiative not only empowers ambitious young athletes in Uganda but also highlights the broader impact that sports can have in building communities and inspiring future generations.

Fond Farewells
It's a sad time for ANZA Cricket as we bid farewell to two key members of our sports group. First up, we say goodbye to Ravi Prasad from the UK after five years of playing with us – we already miss his infectious smile, express pace (and fake No. 11 batting ... you could easily go at No. 3!). We also bid farewell to Dan Mathieson, another great player from New Zealand, with whom we shared the field for nearly a decade. Dan was renowned for his safe pair of hands, quick running and spectacular innings. You will both be massively missed!
As yet, ANZA doesn’t run a junior team, but Singapore Cricket Club offers a youth development programme for kids aged 5 -10. With a variety of sessions running weekends and mid-week, the Cubs Cricket environment is “all about fun and enjoyment through our brilliant game.” To find out more contact David Bennett at JuniorCricket@scccricket.com

Thai Breakers
Following months of training, ANZA Singapore Wombats travelled to Thailand for the annual AFL Asian Championships. Here’s what happened.
This summer, two teams from the ANZA Singapore Wombats AFL club travelled to Thailand for the annual AFL Asian Championships. This followed a regular season that saw our men’s and women’s teams cover more miles than any year since Covid, travelling to Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bali and Ho Chi Minh City to test their mettle against some of AFL Asia’s top squads. Following months of Sunday training at the SCC Fields in Dempsey, and mid-week running sessions around Fort Canning, we fielded two squads with a mix of experienced players and first-timers, expats and locals.
The men’s squad started the day with a match against division favourites, the Hong Kong Dragons, matching their pressure and intensity for the full 20 minutes resulting in a draw on the final siren. Singapore continued to build, recording three wins from the remaining three heats against Thailand, China and last year’s division winners Malaysia, before facing Cambodia in the semi-final. Despite having played 4 x 20-minute games to this stage, the boys out-ran the Cambodian team to lock a spot in the Grand Final against Hong Kong. After going into the halftime break eight points ahead, we knew we’d need a big effort to
bring home our first championship since 2014. Not only did Singapore hold the Dragons a single point in the second half, but they pulled ahead for a 20-point win, an undefeated day, and to claim the Avani Men’s Division 2 AFL Asian Championship!
Masterclass
Meanwhile our women’s team, the Wombettes, entered the year as the team to beat, following their inaugural championship in 2022, and heartbreaking three-point grand final loss in 2023. Much like the men, our Wombettes kicked off the day against Hong Kong registering the first of four hard-fought wins as they marched through the heats stage against Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia as well. However, the finals series unfolded in dramatic fashion for Singapore’s women as Malaysia came out far stronger for their semi-final match. Both teams struggled to find any separation on the scoreboard and scores remained tied at the end of the second half.
It took six minutes of overtime for the Wombettes to finally pull their noses in front and lock a spot in their third grand final in three years. Facing the prospect of barely 10 minutes rest after the late overtime finish, the exhausted girls took on a daunting task in toppling the fast, hard-running Cambodian outfit for the cup. Despite the odds, they produced a defensive masterclass that held their opponents scoreless after 20 minutes to take out the 2024 ATG AFL Asia Women’s

Whole new league!
ANZA Soccer's Matildas Girls League is on fire with fun, skills and newfound confidence for all.
The ANZA Matildas’ journey began in the 2015-2016 season, when ANZA Soccer introduced girls-only teams that competed within the mixed league. These formative years set the foundation for what would later become a dedicated league for female players, allowing them to showcase their skills and passion for soccer. As girls’ participation grew, the Matildas transformed into a standalone programme, aimed at providing an inclusive and empowering environment in which young female athletes can flourish.
Fast forward to today and ANZA's Matildas Girls League is thriving. It has become an undeniable success, with a surge in sign-ups and an incredible amount of enthusiasm from the players. Currently, the new girls vs girls league
has three age groups running strong: Matildas 8 - 9 years old, Matildas 10 - 11 years old, and Matildas 12 - 13 years old. Each league provides a space where girls can develop their soccer skills, build confidence, and form lasting friendships.
Much of this success is thanks to the dedication and expertise of Lead Parent Coach Pete. Pete’s infectious enthusiasm, paired with his ability to craft an engaging yet challenging training programme, has made the Matildas a hub for skill development and personal growth. Under his leadership, the girls are not only learning valuable football techniques but also building self-esteem, teamwork, and leadership qualities.
But Pete isn’t the only driving force behind the Matildas’ success. A special
mention goes to the Age Group and Team Coordinators - Leah, Tjitske, Lucy, and Niina - whose unwavering dedication ensures that the league runs smoothly. And, of course, we can’t forget the fantastic parent coaches who volunteer their time every week, cheering players on and keeping the fun alive.
In addition to the internal league, the the Matildas programme has expanded its reach into competitive soccer. ANZA now fields six competitive Matildas teams in the prestigious JSSL League, as well as a team in the Young Eagles League, giving the girls the opportunity to compete against the best teams across Singapore. As the league continues to expand, inclusivity remains a central focus.
The Matildas Girls League prides itself
Team Coordinators Leah and Tjitske (who also took these great pics too!)
on welcoming players of all skill levels, offering opportunities for both seasoned soccer players and newcomers alike. Girls aged 3 - 4 years play in mixed teams. Girls aged 5 - 7 years have the option to join either a Matildas team or a mixed team in the Saturday Club League. In these age groups, Matildas teams compete against mixed teams. “We aim to provide one of the leading grassroots programmes for girls in Singapore and welcome females of all levels to come and have a trial,” says Pete. This inclusive approach fosters a nurturing environment where girls can shine, both on and off the field.
The future is bright for the ANZA Matildas Girls League. The energy, excitement, and camaraderie within the community is palpable, and the league’s success continues to grow with each season. As the Matildas make their mark on the soccer scene in Singapore, one thing is clear: this community of young female athletes is going places. Watch out, world - the Matildas are coming!
Watch out world - ANZA Matildas are a force to be reckoned with!
A new home for ANZA Nippers
Our water babies are back with a new location, lots of fun activities, and a love of inflatable unicorns. CASPAR SCHLICKUM reports.
Nippers returned after the summer break and we were ready for it!
This new season we've taken on a decidedly more Hawaiian theme, being directly positioned for action in front of Ola Beach Club on the freshly cleaned beach at Siloso.
Already a destination for many other watersports, Siloso beach is one of the best spots on Sentosa, with slightly deeper water, and a great watersports vibe. Ola itself is not only a beach club, but one of Singapore’s most comprehensive watersports centres.
SWIMMING & BOARDING
We’re super-excited about our new home - and with good reason. Firstly, the beach is long and wide, and the water is deeper here, which makes it ideal for the many varied activities that the nippers do, but especially swimming and boarding. The kids are loving having so much time in the water and their confidence, especially the youngest age groups, is growing fast. Secondly, we have shade (beautiful, wonderful, glorious shade!). There are
trees and structures that make it much cooler while watching the nippers do their thing. Plus, there’s takeaway coffee right there. As ANZA Nipper parent Jonathan Walbridge said, “I used to get on a rental push bike and balance a tray of coffees with medium results and lots of spillages.
So yeah, this is clearly better.”
Thirdly, we have the use of the beach club. Ola itself is a fantastic spot, with wonderful and accommodating staff, and delicious food and drinks. Ola is actually a direct translation from the Hawaiian word for life, good health and wellbeing, and
There is no "I" in Team for our ANZA Nippers

the club describes itself as the ultimate destination for a life well-lived right by the sea. We think they’ve got it nailed.
POOL PARTY
The post-nippers pool party has already become an institution (although the inflatable unicorn struggles to keep up with the melee of passengers), and booking a table by the pool, chatting with old and new friends and sharing some food is a great way to round out the session. The well-kept and clean changing rooms and showers are also a big improvement for families that have other plans after the ANZA Nippers session.
After many changes over the past few years, we are all hoping that Ola becomes a permanent fixture for our group. We encourage everyone to come along, book a table, and enjoy nippers in an entirely new way!

10 MINUTES WITH
Hearts
As the season of goodwill approaches, we chat to Chairman of local charity Willing Hearts, Mr Teh Eng Hua, about serving those less fortunate.
Who are Willing Hearts?
Founder Tony Tay began Willing Hearts in 2003 with the mission of serving the underprivileged, needy and marginalised members of Singapore society. A secular, non-affiliated charity, we operate on a handful of staff and 95% of our tasks are carried out by volunteers from all walks of life.
Your core programme is operating a community kitchen … Yes. We prepare, cook and distribute about 10,000 daily free meals to over 70 distribution points islandwide, 365 days a year.
How did this begin?
95% OF TASKS ARE CARRIED OUT BY VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE
We started by collecting unsold bread from bakeries that would otherwise dispose of it at the end of the day and distributed it to homeless people. This led us to providing rations such as rice, vegetables, canned food, and more. We initiated a cooked food programme when we realised that rations were not helpful for the homeless - without a kitchen, they had nowhere to cook them.
How has the kitchen changed over the years?
Willing Hearts has operated only one kitchen throughout our 21 years of service. We've moved locations five times, each time into a larger premises. In 2022 we settled at No. 1 Lorong J, Telok Kurau, a much bigger space, which allows us to offer other activities alongside our community kitchen programme.
What are the other activities?
We provide a transitional shelter called Gift of Joy for families and individuals in need of accommodations whilst they're working on their long-term solutions. There's also the “Safe, Sound Sleeping Place” (S3P) for rough sleepers while they
look for housing. We also arrange elderly services and activities which vary from dental clinics, healing services and dietary programmes, to more social activities such as karaoke, dancing, games, and sewing sessions. Lastly, we host youth training for marginalised persons to improve employability.
Does the need for your services change around the festivities?
As we’re providing daily needs and not seasonal, the number of beneficiaries remains much the same throughout the year. However, during Christmas, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya or other festive days, we try to provide something better for everyone.
How can ANZA readers get involved in your work?
They can join hands with Willing Hearts by donating. Committing to community work has always been a passion for expats living in Singapore. We're open seven days a week and you can volunteer in our activities, food preparation and distributions.
