Introducing our new Head of Early Years

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata he tangata. What is the most important thing? It is people, it is people it is people. “ “
Whether it is the amazing children in the Early Years, our passionate, knowledgeable staff or our parent community I am looking forward to learning and contributing to AIS continuing to evolve and grow. “ “
Tell us more about yourself and your background?
How did you start in Education?

My name is Stuart Armistead. My wife Kelly and I have been married for 26 years and we have two daughters. Maia is in her last year at University and Piper is with me at AIS. I was born and raised on the North Shore in Auckland, New Zealand. I am a highly experienced educator with 27 years in education, including five principalships. We have moved recently from Lausanne, Switzerland where I was Head of Primary at the International School of Lausanne.
For as long as I can remember sport and music have always been two major passions of mine. My passion for teaching and learning began via coaching hockey when I was at high school. It was in interactions with my peers that I found that I enjoyed seeing people grow and feel like I was making a positive difference.
What do you think are key areas a school should focus on?
Excellent schools have a large number of factors that make them stand out. If I was to choose two areas I would highlight:
Culture - ‘Successful schools have at their centre the attitudes, values, and beliefs of the people’. As soon as you walk into AIS you feel the warmth and care of staff and see children who have a clear sense of belonging and identity. Building trusting relationships and strong partnerships with parents are the key ingredients of an excellent school. In the Early Years we want our children and all stakeholders to see, feel and hear our values of love, care and respect.

Future focused - We are preparing our children for a world of continual change. We don’t know exactly what the future will look like but we have a clear understanding of the dispositions, values and skills that children will need to thrive in their lives. It is the role of an excellent school to empower children to become well-rounded learners who have the opportunity to find their strengths, talents and interests and have a clear sense of identity, confidence, resilience and creativity so that they can make a positive difference in their lives.

What are the two or three most critical things you’re looking forward to focusing on in your new role in AIS?
Firstly and most importantly I am looking forward to building connections and trusting relationships with the children, parents and staff in AIS. I am so excited to be joining a school so closely aligned with my core beliefs and values about teaching and learning. I am committed to being in the classroom, having conversations and jumping onto the sports field to meet the wide range of people in this school.
I am also looking forward to listening to the aspirations of our parents for their children in the early years. A positive partnership between home and school is so crucial as children begin their learning journey.
And finally I am hoping that I can make a positive difference and continue to enhance the amazing culture and learning environment that already exists at AIS.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming school year with AIS?
Over my first few weeks at school I am meeting with all staff in the Early Years and holding a parent session titled ‘Thriving in a Changing World’. I am excited to hear staff and parents' thoughts about what makes AIS great and ideas

You are new to Singapore, what are you and your family looking forward to exploring most?
I am already enjoying meeting new people and making connections. Being a part of a large community provides so many opportunities to listen and learn from others. The weekly staff touch sessions are also an absolute highlight.
We have begun to explore Singapore with the wide array of malls, certainly a hit for at least one member of the family! I have been blown away by the range of food and am looking forward to being a little adventurous in the hawker markets. Key events such as the F1 and SIngapore Sevens will also be high on the list as well as building connections with groups such as ANZA and the High Commission. FInally, with Singapore being such a key hub for travel, my family and I are also looking forward to exploring South East Asia and providing a home away from home for friends and family visiting from New Zealand.

The year was 2002. I was younger, and the internet hadn’t yet permeated our daily lives. Armed with a oneway ticket, a crumpled piece of paper with the name of a beach, and a chutzpah I hardly recognise in myself today, I set off for Koh Samui, Thailand. Little did I know that trip would ignite a lifelong passion for travel, particularly in Asia. The memories of that time are deeply rooted in why I moved to Singapore 12 years ago. Returning to Koh Samui 23 years later - the island that changed my outlook and life - for the feature Lights, Camera, Thailand! on p68 was all kinds of wonderful.
This Travel Issue has certainly reignited my wanderlust, and I hope it sparks yours too! As 2025 gets into full swing, Where Next? on p28 reveals the exciting new hotel launches, don’t-miss destinations, flight routes, and travel trends for the coming months. Our insider intel from Singapore’s top travel experts in Travel Hot Takes on p40 reveals where those-in-theknow head on holiday. We’ve also got tips on packing like a pro in Pack It In on p48, plus advice for those who love globetrotting but dread the anxiety of pre-trip prep in Take Flight, Not Fright! on p52.
Also in this edition, our sports groups show how travel is woven into our community. From ANZA Cycling taking their talents to New Zealand in Taking On Taupo on p72, to the inspiring story of ANZA Soccer’s impact on children in Cambodia in Giving Back Is The Goal on p74, it’s heartwarming to see members staying globally connected through shared passions.

Speaking of connection, there’s no better way to meet likeminded people (and have the best night ever!) than at the ANZA Black Tie Ball 2025 - A Night In The Tropics on Friday, 23 May. With awesome food, drinks, and entertainment lined up, it’s one not to miss. Plus, with over 25 travel prizes up for grabs, this is your chance to turn dreams of escape into reality. "At Dulwich College (Singapore), I've been given many opportunities to explore what service truly means. Working on our mentorship programme has helped me realise how rewarding it is to give back, especially within a school that values character and community. It feels amazing to share what l've learned to our younger students and to see others find their own passions. Dulwich College (Singapore) has inspired me to have a meaningful impact and embrace service as a core part of who I am."

ANZA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
By the time you read this March - April edition of ANZA magazine, I hope to be relaxing in a sun-dappled piazza in Italy, sipping a glass of local wine and watching the evening passeggiata unfold. The ability to travel is one of the many privileges of life - especially when you live in Singapore, with its incredible travel connections. In this Travel Issue, we take a look at what’s emerging in the travel landscape and how it’s shaping the way we explore the globe.
Staying connected lies at the heart of the ANZA community, and we make it our mission to extend our warmth around the world. I hope you’re as uplifted as I am by the story of ANZA Soccer and their collaboration with REACH, an NGO in Cambodia, on p74. This project continues to grow, with Executive Committee member Adam Martin visiting in December to deliver donated items. It’s a brilliant example of ANZA Action in action, showing the impact we can make when we work as one.
The exchange of ideas between ANZA’s subgroups is something I always find inspiring, and I’m excited to share the efforts of ANZA Netball. They are one of the most well-organised sports programmes within our portfolio, always willing to impart their insights. Curious to see how the newly launched ANZA Adult Netball group compared to our ever-popular youth programme, I visited their first training session. Their professionalism was outstanding, but what I didn’t expect was to leave with fresh ideas for team-building activities for our ANZA Scouts group!
Also bubbling under is a collaboration between ANZA Scouts and our ANZA Stitches craft group. It’s this kind of cross-group sharing that gives us all the opportunity to learn from each other and discover new ways to relate.

Of course, with any thriving community, change is inevitable, and with it comes the bittersweet task of saying goodbye. It’s time to bid farewell to some hugely dedicated members of our community, starting with Karen Velthuis, whose work as ANZA Netball Coordinator over the past seven years has left a lasting impact. Additionally, we say goodbye to Executive Committee members Adam Martin, Kylie Barry, MaryScot Thom, Megan Scott, and Tristan Perry. All have served for many years, and I am deeply grateful for their support and commitment. I wish everyone much luck with their ongoing journeys.

As always, it’s a busy times for ANZA, and I hope this issue leaves you feeling as spirited as ever. Let’s continue to make great things happen together!

n 2025, New Zealand and Singapore are celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations. For the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), this also signifies 60 years of bilateral defence cooperation with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
The first significant presence of New Zealand units in Singapore came during WWII with No. 488 (NZ) Squadron, approximately 600 Royal New Zealand Air Force personnel taking part in the Battle of Singapore in 1942. Ultimately this campaign cost the NZDF 34 fatalities with many more personnel subsequently captured.

After WWII, New Zealand deployed ships, aircraft and infantry to support security in South East Asia, including in Singapore. NZDF forces were active in both the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation. In 1961 the New Zealand infantry (1RNZIR) relocated from Malaysia to Nee Soon Barrack. In 1974, New Zealand formed the New Zealand Force South East Asia (NZFORSEA). It is estimated that up to 850 service members, and 700 dependents lived in Singapore at any one time.

Ki te Kāpuia e kore e whati We succeed by working together
Since 1989, the Singapore Armed Forces and New Zealand Defence Force have operated together in Timor-Leste and assisted with reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most recently they deployed together in Combined Maritime Task Force 150, securing freedom of movement in the maritime domain.

Today the NZDF presence in Singapore is modest, but the Defence Support Unit supports ships, aircraft and training not just in Singapore, but the broader region. New Zealand also contributes to the Counter Terrorism Information Facility and the Information Fusion Centre, Singapore-based centres which support multilateral security efforts for the region. Singapore conducts regular training in New Zealand, enjoying different weather conditions and wide-open spaces that enable live-firing activities such as Exercise Thunder Warrior.
In uncertain times, Singapore and New Zealand are trusted and reliable defence partners in South East Asia. The New Zealand Defence Force in Singapore looks forward to celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic and bilateral defence cooperation.

Kampong Glam Islamic Heritage & Ramadan Food Bazaar
This tour will focus on the people who settled in Kampong Glam and continue to practice Islamic traditions. We’ll visit the Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, known for its leaning minaret built by a wealthy woman from Malacca, and the Sultan Mosque with its golden domes and minarets. The mosque stands at the heart of what was once the Royal Citadel, Kota Raja, where the Sultan of Johor and his descendants lived.
We’ll also explore murals by local artists and specialty shops selling non-alcoholic perfumes and oils called Attar, along with essentials for the Hajj pilgrimage, such as money belts, white robes (Ihram Umra), prayer rugs, and ZamZam water imported from a sacred well in Mecca.
Since our tour takes place during Ramadan, we’ll have a unique opportunity to experience the local food bazaar “Raikan Cahaya” or “Celebrate the Lights.” After the fast is broken, the area lights up with colourful decorations and food trucks outside Sultan Gate, offering local favourites like kebabs, nasi lemak, sweets, and more (food at your own cost).

Tanglin
Trust School students are preparing for a pioneering learning programme of outdoor education, adventure, and sustainability initiatives.

This April, the first group of Year 9 Tanglin Trust School students will head to Tanglin Gippsland to take part in the inaugural Highlands Programme. This new five-week immersive educational programme will offer the ‘Highlanders’ a mix of academic curriculum, outdoor education, adventure activities and sustainability initiatives, and ultimately a unique and enriching learning experience.
Craig Considine, CEO of Tanglin Trust School, emphasised the immense benefits of experiential learning during the formative teenage years of Middle School, and explained, “Students will have the opportunity to develop essential life skills such as resilience, teamwork, problem-solving, and independence, all while immersed in a stunning natural environment.”
The programme’s name and ethos are deeply rooted in the legacy of Tanglin’s founder, Miss Anne Griffiths-Jones, who recognised the transformative impact of learning beyond the classroom, when back in 1934, she established a boarding school in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia, offering Tanglin students a healthy, safe and refreshing new learning environment.
The Perfect Location for Experiential Learning
Gippsland, Victoria, with its diverse landscapes ranging from rolling lowlands to majestic mountain ranges and its spectacular seasonal changes, serves as an ideal setting for this pioneering experiential learning programme. The Highlands Programme is led by Mark Cutchie, Head of Campus, who will live on-site with his wife Sharon and the rest of the teaching team.
Mark has been instrumental in overseeing every aspect of the programme and site development - from administrative and construction planning of the new campus, to working closely with Tanglin staff to design the academic and outdoor aspects of the offering. His deep understanding of the new campus’s location, coupled with his background in education leadership, has allowed him to collaborate closely with Tanglin’s teaching staff to create an outdoor-focused curriculum that complements the learning objectives of curiosity, confidence and community - all key attributes which are developed during Middle School.
Mark’s frequent visits to Singapore during the planning process have kept parents and students informed about campus progress and plans. His passion and meticulous preparation have ensured that the Highlands Programme aligns seamlessly with Tanglin’s vision of holistic education.

New Tanglin Adventures in Gippsland

Creating the Tanglin Gippsland Campus
Every detail of the campus and the programme has been thoughtfully planned. Student dormitories were designed and decorated using sustainable materials and colours inspired by Gippsland’s native flora. Bushfire management plans were meticulously integrated into the campus’s design, and any felled trees were repurposed where possible for landscaping and firewood, underscoring Tanglin’s commitment to sustainability.
Tanglin’s Outdoor Education department has also collaborated with the Gippsland team to design the hikes and other outdoor experiences that the students will experience, ensuring a seamless integration with the curriculum. Preparations have even extended beyond Year 9, with younger students beginning their journey towards participation in the Highlands Programme through tailored outdoor education activities.
The style and specialism of teachers involved in the Highlands Programme has also been carefully considered. Teachers with expertise in pastoral care and outdoor education were chosen to enrich classroom learning with field-based lessons in geography, history, and science.

The start of the school year last August marked a turning point as planning transitioned into action! In celebration of Tanglin’s Centenary and the establishment of Tanglin Gippsland, a bold challenge was set: to hike the full 665km of the Australian Alps Walking Track. During the October half-term, Mark, supported by a local team of guides, led a group of 20 Tanglin staff, including Craig Considine and Jennifer Martin (Head of Outdoor Education), on the inaugural expedition, covering an initial 77km of the track.
The hike allowed staff to experience firsthand the breathtaking beauty and challenges that students will encounter. Reflecting on the experience, Jen shared, “When we were out in the mountains, it was all about supporting each other and appreciating the path ahead. We felt an incredible sense of pride after completing the trek - imagine how our students will feel after spending five weeks here!”
The Next Chapter
The Highlands Programme’s launch in Tanglin’s Centenary year is a remarkable milestone, with over 100 students expected to participate in its inaugural year. However, its true legacy lies in its long-term impact: challenging students, fostering independence, and creating lifechanging educational experiences.

As far as new looks go, it doesn’t get much better than the one at Dusit Thani Bangkok. For those seeking accommodation that offers something fresh, evocative and with a hint of history, look no further.
What's new here?
Everything! This hotel opened its doors late last year after a five-year facelift. The original Dusit Thani Bangkok was built in 1970 as one of the city’s first luxury hotels. It quickly became beloved by Thailand’s high society, and for the following decades quietly observed as the Silom area blossomed around it, while basking in its iconic, supermodelesque status.
However, like many of us post 50 years old, the hotel needed a makeover. In a bold move, the property was completely

torn down in 2019 and rebuilt from the ground up. Covid delayed the overhaul somewhat, but it was worth the wait. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the new Dusit Thani Bangkok is a reincarnation that has wildly outshone itself.
How's the revamp?
The stunning aesthetics are all down to Hong Kong interior designer André Fu. This new manifestation reinterprets the original hotel’s classic qualities through a modern lens, and Fu had a hand in every detail - from the lavish fifth-floor wellness centre to the impressive array of elegant lampshades. The building is still standing tall at 39 floors, but with 257 rooms, down from 517, Fu had more communal space to play with. The revamp now includes one of the largest ballrooms in Bangkok, the seductive 1970s Bar, and the fabulous Spire Rooftop Bar, which features nightly DJ performances and a cool cocktail selection. The “Antimatter” hit the spot with its whisky-forward yuzu and lychee flavours, with a touch of Thai spice for an exotic kick.
The chichi ambience of the Dusit Thani envelopes you the moment you enter the glass-fronted, triple-height lobby, washed in subtle shades of cream, latte, and aquamarine. Old-school grandeur comes to life with hexagonal ceiling pleats

inspired by lotus leaves, and flowing bronze screens. But it’s the two ornately painted stone pillars standing tall beside delicate sculptures and murals that gets our design-loving hearts thumping. Both pillars were salvaged from the original property’s Benjarong restaurant. Adorned with hand-painted murals, they make for stunning visual showstoppers. The hotel also showcases Thai artists, featuring sculptures, earthenware, and murals.
What are the sleeping arrangements?
All guest rooms are situated on one side of the building, offering views of Lumpini Park from every one. Huge box windows offer incredible views of lush greenery set amidst ever-expanding skyscrapers, which appear to stand guard over the capital. Hours can be spent resting on the padded window seats, watching cars race along Rama IV Road below, while in the distance, park-goers enjoy a game of tennis and boating among the trees.
Inside the rooms, pistachio wainscoting with Japanese vibes contrast beautifully with celadon silk rugs, bronze detailing, and soft gold fabric screens crafted by local artisans. The bathroom is a wonder to behold. The large soaking tub will become part of every guest's pre-evening cocktail ritual. A special shout-out goes to the Japanese toilet, which lifts its perfectly heated seat automatically when you open the door. (Endless fun ahead!).
Where are we dining?
All-day restaurant, The Pavilion, carries a speakeasy-like allure. The breakfast selection is massive, featuring hot and cold hams, cheeses, sausages, salads, piles of tropical fruit, freshly baked pastries, plus made-to-order eggs and plenty of Thai fare.
Committed to preserving the essence of historic Dusit Thani flavours, the evening menu here showcases authentic Thai dishes with Cantonese specialities. Our starter of Yum Som Choon Som O was a salad of melt-in-your-mouth Phichit pomelo, green mango, braised pork, and fluffy fried fish. The Massaman Wagyu curry was a thick, homestyle treat of beef shank, potatoes, and lotus seeds with crispy roti bread for dipping. A trio of ice creams - young coconut, caramelised banana, and mango sticky rice - followed to cleanse the palate. We recommend bagging a seat by the window overlooking the outdoor "waterfall" - a reimagined nod to the original that featured in the inaugural building.
Can we just hang out?
There’s no better place to recline than beside the 25-metre infinity pool. Located on the fifth floor, it blends seamlessly into the surrounding skyline, and swimming here feels like floating at one with the city. Flanked by whirlpool baths and plush loungers, take a dip as the sun sets, and the surroundings begin to twinkle with nighttime promise. There’s also an enormous gym, a “sanctuary dome” where guests can join yoga and sound healing sessions, and the Devarana Spa, offering traditional Thai healing practices alongside fancy French facials. If shopping’s more your thing, a brand-new mall is slated to open as part of the Dusit Thani complex towards the latter part of 2025, meaning you’ll have top-notch accommodation, high fashion, food, relaxation, and quintessential Bangkok magic neatly packaged in one perfectly renovated and rejuvenated spot.
Club rooms and suites come with Porsche airport transfers and access to the 39th-floor club lounge and terrace, which serves food and drinks throughout the day.

A PLACE TO
Worry about leaving your pet when you travel? Don't! Singapore’s furry friends are more than pampered thanks to these stays and services.

For those of us living in pet-loving Singapore, travelling for business or pleasure can come with one major stress - where to leave your fourlegged friends while you're overseas. Thankfully, the red dot has seen a rise in luxury pet hotels and high-end services offering safety and comfort for animals when the humans head off.
At the forefront of this trend is Singapore’s famous five-star dog hotel, The Wagington (thewagington.com.sg). Located in a 1920’s officer's quarters in Dempsey, The Wagington offers a fabulous blend of impeccable pet facilities and tailored services, ensuring peace of mind for cat and dog owners, and a proper pawty for pets!
The inspiration behind it stems from the personal experience of expat owner Francis Higgins, who found himself struggling to locate suitable accommodation for his British Bulldog, Bobo, back in 2013. “I needed to travel to the USA for three weeks, but I had huge trouble finding a suitable place for Bobo to stay," Francis shares. "Most options were small shophouses with little space or nonair-conditioned kennels, which I didn't feel happy with."
Inspired by the pet hotels he came across while travelling in Hollywood and Beverley Hills, Francis came up with the brainwave to open a hotel solely for pets in Singapore.
Putting on The Ritz
Rooted in a British theme, The Wagington offers various accommodation options for cats and dogs, from cosy rooms to lavish lodgings. Signature suites like the Royal Suite for Dogs and the Palace Suite for Cats provide high-end amenities, including large beds, TV's, and cat trees. "We designed the rooms to reflect the luxury of UK hotels like The Savoy, The Dorchester, and The Ritz. Our guestswhether canine or feline - deserve the best,” Francis says.
Outdoor areas are covered in AstroTurf, and the grounds are sprayed with ozone water to eliminate bacteria. For dogs, there’s a bone-shaped swimming pool for daily dips, complemented by two play areas - one for petite and cutesy canines and another for heftier hounds.
Beyond the luxurious living spaces, grooming services are available such as mud spas, teeth brushing, and nail

clipping. Daily walks around the lush Dempsey area keep pets physically and mentally engaged, and regular swims are a particular favourite activity. "A lot of the dogs love the water and it’s the highlight of their day," Francis continues. For those with special dietary needs, the dining menu features BARF raw meat and balanced meals to keep pets at peak health throughout their stay.
Protection and wellbeing are top priorities. All pups undergo a temperament evaluation before entering The Wagington to ensure safe interactions with other pets. “Dogs must be neutered and socialised well with other dogs,” explains Francis, adding that the hotel staff are specially trained in pet care, including first aid and CPR, ensuring every guest receives the upmost attention.

their pets at any time - whether from a beach on Bintan or a boardroom in Bali. Francis continues, “We’ve even had pets stay with us for over six months at a time while waiting to be accepted from Singapore into Australia. Thankfully, our repeat customers know they can trust us to care for their pets just as they would."
For Francis, the hotel is more than just a business - it’s a labour of love. “We’re creating an experience, not just a place to drop off animals,” he says, highlighting that the hotel’s mission is to give pets a memorable stay, whether they're lounging about or receiving plenty of supervision from our staff. "We have staff with the animals all the time, so a lot of attention is given to teaching dogs discipline and appropriate behaviour in a pack environment. "
Still worried that Fido might miss you while you’re gone? Give full permission
beforehand and friends can check in on your beloved on your behalf.
Home from home
While establishments like The Wagington offer a fantastic high-end service, some pet owners prefer to utilise a more personalised (and less spendy) style of care when they travel, such as a pet boarding service. Founded in 2024 by Maurice Png, Godpawrents (godpawrents. sg) connects cat and dog owners with a trusted network of “godpawrents” who offer pet boarding in Singapore alongside daycare, dog walking, and house visits.
Maurice recognised the need for affordable pet care a few years ago as pet abandonment rates in Singapore rose due to rising costs. “The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) reported a 3x increase in animal abandonment in 2023 compared to 2022,"

OUR GUESTS - WHETHER CANINE OR FELINE - DESERVE THE BEST

he says. “We offer an affordable, intimate service that allows pets to stay in familiar environments.”
Godpawrents cater to those seeking a more home-like, flexible option of accommmodation, with less of the hotel chic, but with all of the love, kindness and comfort.
Boarding at a Godpawrent’s home starts at $40 per night. With over 400 verified "godpawrents" to choose from, pet owners can schedule meet-andgreets and select the best caregiver for them. All of Godpawrents' freelancers are thoroughly screened and possess relevant pet experience, whether as pet owners, individuals working with pets, or volunteers with pets. The freelancers on their books include veterinary nurses, groomers, volunteers at animal welfare groups, community cat caregivers, foster carers, zoo interns, and former dog unit national servicemen.
Indeed, independent dog trainer Glen Chew began his career in the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), where he served as Trainer in Charge for the Singapore Search Platoon. Specialising in training working dogs for fire investigations, post-blast scenarios, and search-and-rescue missions, Glen realised after several years that there was an opportunity to assist pet owners with their dogs. He then established K9 Matters (k9matters.sg), which provides full-time training and daycare services for dogs. One of the standout features is the management and individual attention each dog receives. “Our daycare is not just about watching pets while their owners are away. It’s about creating a safe, enriching environment where dogs can interact, socialise, and be looked after based on their needs,” Glen explains. While K9 Matters does not offer boarding, Glen does have sage advice for those leaving their pets for an extended period: “Selecting the best caregiver for your dog is essential, as is having a ‘meet and greet’ before making any decisions,” he says. “Meeting in person allows both the pet and the owner to get a feel for the place and the person. Ask for reviews and recommendations, and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to look elsewhere.”
Certainly, for your best furry friend, it’s crucial to choose wisely to ensure your time apart is paws-itive for everyone involved.

“More people will travel for world-class international dining experiences”
ERIN PADILLA, FOUNDER, ACCELA COMMUNICATIONS accela.comms

Big For 2025: Sustainable and Regenerative Travel will be at the forefront as travellers seek to minimise their environmental impact and evaluate destinations based on sustainability practices. Off-The-Beaten-Track locations will take people to lesser-known spots that offer unique cultural experiences and new adventures. Multi-Generational and Group Travel destinations that appeal to all age groups will create opportunities for lasting memories and deeper connections. Lastly, Bleisure Travel - a blend of business and leisure - is on the rise. With companies offering remote work options, travellers will continue extending work trips to include holidays.
Major Trends: Culinary travel is evolving. In 2025, more people will travel not just for local cuisine, but for worldclass international dining experiences - think the best pizza in Japan!
Get Excited About: Event-based travel. In 2024 we saw live concerts pulling in tourism dollars for cities around the world. Smaller destinations can localise that type of experience, such as Cempedak Island who are hosting a murder mystery weekend in April.

I’ve become fond of active holidays with a focus on wine, as I complete my WSET 2 and work toward WSET 3 certification. I’m looking forward to hiking the Milford Track in New Zealand’s South Island and exploring vineyards in Central Otago.

“Travelling in the shoulder-season is going to grow”
LUCY JACKSON WALSH, MANAGING DIRECTOR, LIGHTFOOT TRAVEL
lightfoottravel.com lightfoottravel
Big For 2025: Hyper-personalised experiences. Our clients seek trips that reflect their individuality and make them feel special. For example, we’re seeing an uptick in tailored wellness holidays with yoga and sound healing, requests for private dining and more private access to art museums. Travelling in the shoulder-season is also going to grow. Nico Heath (Lightfoot’s African specialist and cofounder) recommends a green season safari when the air is clear of dust, the animals are calving, the landscapes are lush and green, and there are fewer tourists.
Major Trends: JOMO, aka the Joy Of Missing Out. Similar to Slow Travel, this is about going off-grid in locations where you can disconnect and recharge.

Destination Incoming: 2025 marks the Bicentennial of Bolivia. The capital city, La Paz, has rapidly evolved into a melting pot of flavours blending traditional Bolivian ingredients with modern culinary techniques. Lightfoot's bespoke foodie itineraries include meals at the city’s most exciting new restaurants including

Gustu and Phawayi, and a traditional Andean picnic or Apthapi on Lake Titicaca. Bolivia is easily combinable with Peru or Chile’s Atacama desert. It's a really unique country with a surprising new cuisine culture (following on from next door neighbour, Peru).
Get Excited About: So much! But if I had to pick one thing, I’d say trains. Watch out for Saudi’s Dream of the Desert Line (launching end of 2025), Orient Express La Dolce Vita (Italian itineraries launching Spring 2025 from Venice to Tuscany, Rome to Sicily), and the new L’Observatoire carriage on the Belmond Venice Simplon Orient Express (launching March 2025).
I’ll be back to my happy place in Sri Lanka next month. Often referred to as the “teardrop island,” Sri Lanka is not just a stunning destination; it’s a symbol of resilience and healing. For me, it nurtures both the mind and the soul. I look forward to introducing my two smallest boys to the island.

“We’ll see experiences that promote ‘calm and quiet’ in destinations”remote
MATT TOW, CHIEF DESTINATIONS PLANNER, AMALA DESTINATIONS amaladestinations.com amaladestinations
Big For 2025: Eco-conscious and sustainable operators and

accommodations; not just those that support reducing their carbon footprints and operational efficiencies, but also those that actively support environmental, conservation and community initiatives, for example by hiring more local staff or sourcing local products. We’ll also see more wellness-based travel and those seeking experiences that promote calm and quiet in far-flung or more remote destinations.
Highly Recommended: There is a greater spotlight on Bhutan right now due to the increased publicity around Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), which aims to create a unique urban environment centered around mindfulness, wellbeing, and sustainable living. Try to time your visit during one of the Tshechu festivals that celebrate Bhutan’s Buddhist traditions with vibrant and colourful dances, music, and rituals.
Get Excited About: Continuing the age of exploration - from exciting discoveries of new wild places and phenomena, such as 2024’s reveal of the world’s largest land mammal migration in South Sudan that surpasses the Great Migration in East Africa, to new frontiers of travel such as space tourism.
Exploring the Tibetan Plateau, then heading along the eastern edge of the Silk Road in Gansu Province, which served as a vital crossroads that bridged China and Central Asia. “Come summer, Furano in Hokkaido is famous for its lavender flower fields”
STEPHANIE CHAI, CHIEF NOMAD AND FOUNDER, THE LUXE NOMAD theluxenomad.com theluxenomad
Big For 2025: The pandemic fundamentally changed how we value our freedom to escape, connect with ourselves, others, and with local cultures. The majority of Luxe Nomad bookings now come from group and multigenerational stays where people can spend time with family and friends and make long-lasting memories.
Major Trends: Wellness will be a continuing trend as people truly put health before wealth, seeking retreats or destinations that help focus on a reset of mind, body and soul. In Bali, Akashi Residence and Umalas Creek villas are hugely popular as they feature wellness amenities such ice baths, a sauna and yoga platforms. Nag Shampa Private Estate by Sam and Isabella Branson is a new property nestled in the peaceful Taro village near Ubud, Bali. Set amidst tropical jungle, organic orchards, vegetable gardens and wellness spaces, it's totally at one with nature and not to be missed.

Destination Incoming: Furano in Hokkaido. It’s better known for its skiing in winter, but come summer it’s famous for its lavender flower fields and flowers which change from month to month with different arrays in bloom. It’s the real-life land of Wicked in Asia!
Get Excited About: On one hand, it’s tech - the ability to capture a person’s preferences and data to be able to personalise travel experiences. On the other hand, it’s about retaining that authentic human touch and the ability to bring to life local culture, ambassadors, and stories that make a trip really memorable. Tourism should exist to build connections between visitors and locals, creating experiences that are mutually enriching, responsible, and support the local economy.
I hope to travel to Bhutan. It looks like the ultimate destination for a bit of soul. There’s also something magical about a destination that measures its success in Gross National Happiness!

“The Maldives continues to develop new experiences”
PETER FOREMAN, MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL, SENIOR DIRECTOR, SALES, MARKETING & DISTRIBUTION – SINGAPORE & MALDIVES marriott.com
Big For 2025: This year, travel is poised for a strong rebound, with domestic and intra-regional tourism in Asia Pacific continuing to lead the way. Currently, 60% of tourism in the region is domestic or intra-regional. For example, Koh Samui has become more accessible with increased air services, offering idyllic escapes such as W Koh Samui and The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui.
Highly Recommended: The Maldives continues to captivate. While it may not be a new destination for those in Singapore, it keeps developing new experiences that keep both first-time visitors and return guests coming back. Plus, it's a direct, fourhour flight away. January 2025 welcomed the debut of JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort, bringing a contemporary perspective on luxury and wellness. March marks the highly anticipated reopening of W Maldives after an 11-month transformation, showcasing a bold new visual identity and elevated experiences.
Get Excited About: Ta’aktana, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Labuan Bajo in eastern Indonesia offers unparalleled access to Komodo National Park. Similarly, The Sira in Lombok celebrates local heritage alongside serene luxury. In addition, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will launch its third yacht, Luminara, embarking on its maiden voyage from Singapore in December 2025, blending luxury cruising with immersive adventures.

I’m planning a trip back to Australia during the cooler months. After exploring Melbourne, Canberra, and Brisbane last year, I’m eager to visit Hobart and discover more of Tasmania’s natural beauty. A stay at The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel recognised among The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2024, is high on my list.

“Winter wonderland destinations like Tromsø and Sweden are having a moment”

ANDREA SEIFERT, TRAVEL COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTANT @andreacarlottaseifert
Major Trends: The demand for "quietcations" in serene, techfree locations, such as remote alpine lodges or silent retreats, is set to rise. Unique adventures, like glider plane flights over Namibia’s deserts and "cowboy core" experiences in Montana and Wyoming - embracing rustic frontier life - will also gain popularity.
Destination Incoming: Winter wonderland destinations like Tromsø, Norway, the Laplands in Finland, and Sweden are having a moment. From "astro-tourism" to catch the Aurora Borealis, to dog sledding and reindeer safaris, these destinations offer highly memorable holidays for both couples and families.

With just 14 rooms, there are horseback and camel safaris to spot the elusive rhino and leopards, visits to local villages and cattle ranches, riverside picnics, yoga, and more.

I hope to explore Tasmania to hike and experience not only its natural beauty and fantastic food scene, but also the Dark Mofo festival, an immersive blend of art and culture. I’m also looking for a mid-year wellness boost at a retreat like Aro-Ha in New Zealand, or a meditation course at SOMA in Byron Bay.

GAYNOR REID, CEO, CATALYST COMMUNICATIONS catalystcomms.sg
Big For 2025: People are increasingly travelling for live events and concerts, as witnessed by the "Swift Lift" last year when Taylor Swift went on tour. There will also be a rise in "set-jetting" where people travel to destinations they've seen in movies or on TV screens. The TV show, The White Lotus, will make Thailand superpopular this year, for example. (See p68!)
Destination Incoming: Oman is a vastly underrated destination that offers incredible culture, landscapes, UNESCO World Heritage sites, great food, and amazing accommodations. While its

neighbouring countries are all about the bling, Oman is about authenticity, adventure, and nature. Everyone should have it on their list for 2025.
Get Excited About: The relaunch of the Sofitel New York following a major renovation. It’s a hotel I’ve stayed in several times and the location is unbeatable. This makeover will blend Parisian style with New York’s urban spirit, drawing inspiration from its Art Deco roots. The launch of the Orient Express La Dolce Vita is another exciting new experience for 2025, allowing passengers to enjoy luxurious train travel between
Last year, my family holidayed with a group of friends at Villa Capanne in Perugia, Italy. I've never felt more relaxed in my life - just lolling about the gardens, playing golf, visiting the castle, swimming in the pool at the end of the day, and watching the sunset over the Antognolla Valley. We’re planning to return this year to see what it’s like in the cooler months when we can all gather around the fireplace.

PACK IT IN
Stand back - your suitcase is going to get it with these expert tips on packing for an escape with all the family.
Preparation is everything when it comes to travel. Whether you’re going tropical, to a colder climate, or on a sporty break, the right approach to filling your case sets the tone for the entire trip.
Skye Findlay, founder of Singapore’s Findlay The Label (findlaythelabel. com), knows the importance of packing properly. The Aussie expat who has lived in Singapore for almost a decade travels 5 - 6 times a year for work and pleasure. “I always start with a detailed packing list to avoid forgetting anything important. I plan my outfits in advance and use a mix of packing cubes and Findlay pouches to keep things neat.” Her advice for wrinklefree packing? Sounds simple, but it’s imperative to hang dresses and skirts as soon as you arrive at your destination. "It makes a world of difference," she says. When it comes to organising your carry-on luggage, Skye relies on her signature Findlay swim storage bags. “They’re clear, so I can quickly grab what I need when I'm using them,” she explains. Inside, you’ll find must-have items like lip balm, facial spray, Kindle, charger, and mints - her priorities for staying comfortable and refreshed. With a little forward planning, you can hit Changi's departure lounge feeling chilled, confident, and like your holiday has already started. Here's how.
LET’S PREP!

What should everyone pack for a holiday, no matter what the destination?
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and your phone. I keep mine in one of my Findlay pouches (along with my hotel key), so I can carry around the necessities throughout the day. It’s my go-to for everything - beach, pool, spa, and bar!
What about packing beauty products?
Travel-size products are a game-changer for me. When my favourites aren’t available in smaller sizes, I pump them into compact, stackable containers. Some of my top travel-size picks include:
Naked Sundays Collagen Glow SPF 50+ (20ml)
Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm (30ml)
Avene Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream (40 ml)

How do you pack for different family members?
When it comes to the kids, less is more. For my son, I pack a white t-shirt for each day (except for travel days, where I go with a navy one) and colourful swim shorts. My daughter prefers to stay in her swimsuit all day on holiday, so I only pack a few dresses for the evenings. As for where we like to travel as a family, you can’t beat Koh Samui and Phuket in Thailand. And of course, there's nowhere better than Australian beaches. My favourite spots are determined by the children. Happy, busy children equal a happy relaxed holiday!
What essentials do you recommend for families with kids?
If I said iPads, headphones and snacks, would I be the worst mother of the year?!

LET’S HIT THE BEACH!
Sarongs
Kaftans
Palazzo pants
Swimsuits
Sunglasses
What are your must-have clothing and accessories for a beach holiday?
For me, it’s all about comfort and versatility. Must-have pieces include:
A sun hat that’s easy to pack!
How do you select the right swimwear?
I focus on what makes me feel confident based on my body type. I like to pair my swimwear with a sarong, floaty skirt, or cotton palazzo pants for a comfortable, elegant look.
What pieces work for transitioning from beachside to evening?
A sarong is my absolute go-to. It’s incredibly versatile and can be worn over swimwear during the day, or styled with a nice top and jewellery for a sunset drink.
What about footwear?
I pack two pairs of sandals. One is a raffia style for the beach and pool, and the other is a tan leather sandal for evenings. For transit days, I wear comfortable footwear, like a white sneaker or driving shoe.

Any beauty products you recommend for a beach break?
My fundamentals include:
AiryDay Lip Me SPF 50 Dreamscreen
La Roche-Posay Anti-Shine Mist SPF 50
Naked Sundays Cabana Glow
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast
Olaplex No. 3 (perfect for a sleek, holiday bun!)
LET’S
EXPLORE THE CITY!
How do you balance packing for sightseeing, casual events, dinners or events in the city?
I focus on adaptable, neutral pieces that can easily be mixed and matched. This allows me to go from sightseeing during the day to a formal dinner in the evening without missing a beat.
Any tips for accessories?
A classic belt can really elevate an outfit. It’s simple, stylish, and practical for both casual and more dressed-up looks.
How can you dress for cooler temperatures while still looking chic?
I always take a black turtleneck. It’s an absolute classic and pairs well with pants, skirts, or trousers. Layer it with a jacket or coat for warmth and add a statement necklace to elevate the look.
What's on your list for a sporty holiday?
I always start with base layers if we'll be doing something active. A cosy jumper and a waterproof jacket are also compulsory. When travelling to a snowy destination I add a warm beanie, gloves, neck warmer and snow goggles. I'm a huge fan of the thermal range at Uniqlo. They have you covered for an adventure packed holiday.
LET’S GET
ACTIVE!
What should you keep in mind when packing for a city holiday?
Comfortable shoes are a must for a city break. I like clothing that works for both casual outings and slightly dressier settings.
How do you make activewear work for physical activities and casual hangouts?
I like to add accessories like hats or simple jewellery, and finish with a less sporty sneaker for a more comfortable streetready outfit for post-adventure.
What accessories should you prioritise?
Sunglasses, sunscreen, portable charger, hair ties/clip, waterproof jacket, thick comfortable socks, and shoes that you know you can last all day in. Lastly, don't forget a sizeable bag to carry all your daily necessities around in. Rucksacks are great for this, leaving you hands-free.

Western Australia offers a winning blend of rugged wilderness, stunning beaches, and cultural experiences.
Perched on the shore of the Indian Ocean on the northwest coast of Australia, approaching Broome by air provides your first indication that this is a place of breathtaking natural beauty. You’ll be awestruck by

the incredible palette of colors below - turquoise waters, golden sands, and rust-red earth blending together to create a stunning natural masterpiece.
A direct 4.5-hour Jetstar Asia flight from Singapore (April - October) with no time zone difference makes Broome an easy and irresistible getaway. Despite its
population of just 15,000, this charming town is packed with incredible experiences. It’s the perfect place for a short break to unwind or to jump-start your exploration of the vast Kimberley wilderness.
Soon after arrival, you’ll be drawn to the ocean, whether to relax on the beach for a spectacular sunset or to take in the vista from a different perspective - high astride a camel on a sunset beach ride. Join a boat cruise to witness nature writ large: the largest humpback whale migration in the world, pods of the shy but photogenic snubfin dolphins, and turtles aplenty. Or step back into the Cretaceous period on a mission to discover the most diverse collection of dinosaur footprints on the planet. For those with a passion for fishing, the catch of the day could be yours on a fishing charter.

Broome’s connection to the sea runs deeper than just its beaches - it is the heart of Australia’s pearling industry. Once the pearling capital of the world, its waters produced 80% of the world’s pearl shell. Visitors can learn about this fascinating history through local tours or explore the many jewelry retailers showcasing the exquisite, locally sourced pearls that continue to captivate the world with their size, shape, and quality.

Take flight,
not fright!
Near or far, tropical or industrial, alone or with family, I love to travel. Escaping Singapore and discovering fresh territories, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and learning new ways to say “thank you,” “cheers”, and “where are the toilets?” fills me with a wanderlust-fuelled joy that has not abated since my early teens. However, until I’m safely ensconced at my new destination, with my bags unpacked and a clear idea of all fire exits, I am a veritable bag of nerves. Heading on a trip - big or small - induces a pre-travel anxiety that is widely disproportionate to holidaying in the first place.
The flight-booking phase is usually a pretty breezy affair. Living on the red dot, there are so many fabulous destinations within close proximity that there’s always
A passion for travel does not mean a lack of pre-travel anxiety. If you freak out before you fly, here’s how to love, not loathe, the run-up. BY NORA MAY.
somewhere you'll want to escape to. Not to mention the wider world where the choices are literally endless. (The same does not apply to my budget, unfortunately).
But once flights are secured and I’ve announced that I’m about to take flight, my excitement and organisational skills take a turn. Rather than living in the moment and wallowing in the privilege of being able to fly anywhere at all, I begin to feel anxious about every single little thing ahead that has even the slightest connection to my getaway.
According to Clinical Psychologist at Self Space, Kate Minsora (kate@selfspace. sg), “Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness. It’s a normal human emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. However, when worry about an
upcoming event such as travel becomes so persistent it interferes with daily life, it can become a problem." She continues, "While a love of travel is common, it doesn’t guarantee a stress-free experience, either in the lead-up or during it. In general, going on any kind of trip can involve uncertainty, which can be a major source of uneasiness and apprehension for many people.”
Kate is right. The uncertainty about what lies ahead once I’ve forked out to fly seems to take on a force of its own. Decision fatigue hits when I look at accommodation, sleepless nights are spent weighing up what I’ll do if I accidentally twist my ankle on a cobbled European street, and I break out in hives when contemplating potential family day trips. Don’t get me started on the
time a stranger called Gary took off with our suitcase from the carousel at Darwin International Airport by accident . . .
“The appeal of travel often lies in exploring new environments, but a disruption of routine can be a source of fear,” Kate continues. “This new or different location often comes with a lack of control. For example, travellers are at the mercy of airlines, hotels, or tour guides, and unexpected changes to plans, such as delays or disappointments like an underwhelming hotel, can significantly impact a holiday experience and contribute to anxiety. Not to mention past negative memories or prior travel mishaps which can trigger concern about similar issues happening again.” (Pretty sure Kate’s referring to Gary here).
What doesn’t help is that while my husband is extremely chilled out (read: disorganised), my travel-induced anxiety has sadly been inherited by our two children, aged 13 and nine.
Despite the angst mentioned above, once we’re actually on holiday, we have a fantastic time. As the final days roll around, I usually have a pretty clear idea of where we’ll be escaping to next, because the family needs something to look forward to. Once home, I get straight onto booking the next getaway as soon as possible, all recollections of my pre-travel worries having miraculously disappeared. Until the flights are secured, and you know what happens next . . .

Keep the kids calm
Preparation and communication will keep your child relaxed during travel. This involves talking about the trip beforehand and involving them in planning - whether it’s choosing an activity or packing their own bag. Use visual aids, maps, pictures and videos to familiarise kids with the destination you’re travelling to.

Distraction is a useful technique when travelling with a child. Pack travel-friendly activities such as books and games to keep them entertained during long travel days and plan for breaks too. Pack familiar items such as toys, blankets, and books to provide a sense of comfort. Schedule stops during long car rides or flights to allow for helpful distractions.

From Bugs to the IB: A Creative Connection
By CIS Integrated Arts Teacher, Jessica Joy Hertz
At the Canadian International School, the question isn’t just what our children are learning, but how they’re learning it. And when it comes to introducing the IB Learner Profile attributes — qualities like being a risk-taker, balanced and an inquirer — we find inspiration in the most imaginative of places. Enter: bugs. Yes, you read that right!

“Ms. Jess, look! I’m a principled spider! I tidied up straight away,” proudly announced Madelyn, age 4, as she showed off her new sticker. “Principled” isn’t a word you’d typically hear from a four-year-old, but at the Canadian International School (CIS) Early Years campus, it’s a common occurrence. Here, our students are empowered to take ownership of their learning, growing holistically into confident, positive contributors to their community.
At the core of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Early Learner framework are four essential features: relationships, learning spaces, play, and symbolic exploration and expression. At CIS, we delved deeply into these elements and realised that to fully bring them to life, we needed to collectively empower our students using the IB Learner Profile attributes as our foundation.

What Are the IB Learner Profile Attributes and Why Are They Important?
The IB Learner Profile consists of 10 key attributes: thinker, principled, caring, reflective, balanced, risk-taker, communicator, knowledgeable, inquirer, and open-minded. These values form the foundation of the IB’s approach to education, emphasising not just academic excellence, but also personal development, social responsibility, and emotional intelligence. In an IB World school like CIS, these attributes are not taught in isolation but are woven into the curriculum and daily interactions, helping children see the relevance of these values in their own lives.
At CIS, we focus on bringing these attributes to life through play, creative exploration, and reflection. You may wonder: How do you teach such complex concepts to multilingual three- to sevenyear-olds and expect them to demonstrate these attributes?

Bringing the Attributes to Life
The journey began with a simple yet powerful idea — bugs. During last year’s kindergarten musical, students were inspired by the insects they encountered in our Outdoor Discovery Centre and in the pages of our Early Years library books. Their creativity soared as they drew colourful bug characters, each one unique, reflecting the diverse world around them. This idea quickly expanded, and our entire stairwell was lined with student-made insect artwork.

As the bug fascination grew, we saw an opportunity to integrate the IB Learner Profile attributes into our students’ creations. Bugs, with their distinct behaviours and characteristics, offer a fascinating lens through which young learners can explore complex concepts. Whether it’s the careful balance of a dragonfly or the collaborative spirit of a group of ants, these tiny creatures can teach big lessons about personal development and community values.
Xuan P., a five-year-old student, explains, “Dragonfly is balanced because she has two wings on both sides, and she flies high in the sky and then flies low on the water.” By allowing students to connect their own insect creations to IB attributes, we gave them an opportunity to reflect on and articulate how they can embody these values in their own behaviour.

Creative Connections
Building on the students’ excitement, we created a song and animated cartoons for each Learner Profile attribute, introduced at weekly assemblies to make the concepts more accessible and memorable. To celebrate our multicultural community, music and art teachers collaborated on a trilingual song in English, French, and Mandarin, reinforcing the vocabulary while honouring cultural diversity. To ensure inclusivity, we worked with our Move-to-Learn teacher, Mr Jorge Aguiar, to incorporate sign language, allowing students to engage with the song through both lyrics and movement. This approach supported multilingual learners and made the experience accessible to all abilities.

A Lasting Impact: Empowering Young Learners
Through these creative and inclusive methods, we’ve seen students not only connect with but embody the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Whether it’s helping a friend, thinking critically about a challenge, or balancing their emotions, they are internalising these values in meaningful ways.
By valuing and then turning student creations into learning tools, we have created a lasting connection between their imaginations and the values we strive to instill. The bugs, animations, song, and sign language continue to remind students that the attributes they see in their characters are the same qualities they can develop within themselves.
With the added boost of immediate positive reinforcement through stickers, a multilingual song uniting our students in common vocabulary, and the inclusion of sign language, we are nurturing young learners who are principled, caring, thoughtful, communicators, risk-takers, balanced, inquirers, knowledgeable, reflective, and open-minded—all with the help of a few delightful bugs!

If you’re curious to learn more about how creativity, play, and the IB Learner Profile shape our students’ journeys, join us for our Early Years Open Houses. Discover firsthand how our innovative approach
To keep students motivated, we introduced a fun way to reward positive behaviour: stickers! What four-year-old doesn’t love one? We turned the student-created insect characters into stickers, each representing an IB Learner Profile attribute. Teachers could instantly praise students for demonstrating these behaviours in all of our learning spaces, and the stickers became a visual reminder of their personal and collective growth and the attributes in action.

The Truth About Testosterone
1What is testosterone?
Testosterone is a sex hormone that plays a role in many important functions of the body. It's produced in the testes in men, and in the ovaries and adrenal glands in women. It's a steroid hormone that the body manufactures from cholesterol. While it's produced in both men and women, men have around ten times more circulating testosterone than women.
2What role does it play?
Testosterone has both anabolic effects (increasing the growth of muscle and bone) and androgenic effects (often linked to male characteristics such as a deep voice, hair growth, and sexual function). It impacts a range of key processes in the body, including metabolism, mental health, fertility, and cardiovascular health.
3What happens to men’s testosterone as they age?
Almost all men will experience a gradual decline in testosterone as they age, although in some men, this decline can be more pronounced, leading to a deficiency. This has become more common in recent years due to higher rates of conditions such as obesity and diabetes, which negatively impact testosterone levels. In most men, the decline is relatively slow, unlike the more abrupt change in hormone levels seen in women during menopause. In rarer cases, some endocrine disorders can cause abnormally high or low levels.
4What are the signs of low testosterone?
There are many symptoms, and men may present in different ways. The most obvious signs include a decrease in libido, erectile dysfunction, and loss of morning erections. Other symptoms include fatigue, mood changes, loss of muscle mass/fitness, increased body fat, and brain fog/poor work performance. If you search for the ‘ADAM questionnaire’ online, you can get a

sense of whether you might be affected by answering ten simple questions.
5How do doctors determine testosterone levels?
Testosterone levels can be checked with a blood test, typically taken first thing in the morning, as levels are at their peak at this time. Testosterone levels vary widely between men, so we must consider your levels alongside any symptoms. In addition to total testosterone levels, a doctor would usually measure how much "free" testosterone you have, as well as other hormone markers.
6What treatment options are available?
As with many conditions, low testosterone can often be effectively managed through lifestyle changes. Losing fat, increasing muscle mass, eating a minimally processed diet rich in healthy fats, quitting smoking, managing stress, and getting enough sleep can lead to significant improvements. In some men, lifestyle changes alone may not be sufficient, and testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be considered. TRT involves administering testosterone in the
form of topical gels, pills, or injections. However, TRT can lower sperm count, so for men who still wish to have children, alternative medications may be available to increase testosterone levels through other pathways.
Final thoughts
There's no "one-size-fits-all" approach to managing testosterone levels. Men experience symptoms in different ways and at varying levels of testosterone. If you have concerns, it’s strongly recommended that you consult an experienced doctor and take an individualised approach, as what may have worked for a friend or colleague may not work for you. As with many health conditions, optimising your lifestyle in terms of diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, and avoiding harmful substances will go a long way in maintaining healthy testosterone levels. Is your teen
ready for take-off?
If your teen is jetting off without you, it’s likely your feelings go beyond just envy! Here’s how to prep them (and you!) for adventure.
Parenting: it never stops. No sooner have you navigated a small person through the trials and tribulations of childhood and their tweens, they want to go on holiday without you. They become wildly giddy about escaping, while you just feel . . . wild. “Travelling without parents is a mark of a maturing young person and a common way that teens begin to step out into the world,” explains Paula Brunning, Counsellor at The Counselling Place (thecounsellingplace. com). But just because your child has grown up travelling, it doesn’t mean that they will automatically understand or have the skills for independent trips. Breaking solo travel down will ensure logistics, planning, cultural awareness, personal safety, and a knowledge of the importance of Factor 50 sunscreen are all covered so your teen is well-prepared. Read on for Paula’s guide.

Monitor Mindset
Being psychologically prepared to travel alone for the first time requires an adaptive mindset, an ability to manage anxiety, and sensitivity to cultural differences. “If a teen can adjust their expectations, they're more likely to have a rewarding experience," says Paula. “Travel isn’t always perfect, and that’s okay. Encouraging them to embrace challenges and see them as part of the adventure rather than obstacles is important.”
An adaptive mindset involves managing expectations. Teens who realise there will likely be some
difficulties along the way - whether navigating unfamiliar spaces or handling logistical tasks - are less likely to feel frustrated or disappointed. Setting expectations that everything may not go smoothly, but that the experience will still be enriching, sets them up for success. Paula continues, “Travel involves unpredictability, and it’s best to approach it with flexibility. When expectations are too high, teens can feel deflated when things don’t go according to plan. But when they are mentally prepared for bumps along the road, they are able to adapt and enjoy the journey.”
Get Talking
Fostering open dialogue is essential so that parents can offer guidance to kids without being overprotective. "Use active listening to validate your child's emotions," recommends Paula. "Demonstrate trust and ensure that pertinent conversations take place beforehand (not when they’re on the beach in Zakynthos). Share your concerns by creating a chat that allows your teen to share what they know, think, or can investigate prior to their travels to become more informed. Boost confidence by telling your teen you believe they can manage this, and discuss scenarios to promote problem-solving skills. Ensure they have useful information readily available and that they're involved in planning for insurance. Check that emergency information (medical care, consular contact details, accommodation information, home contact details), is in hand and that details are stored in at least one place other than their phone.
Paula continues, "Let them know that you have their back and can be an emotional anchor for them while they're away. Explain that you'll be there for them unconditionally if something goes wrong. If you travel, lead by example and share the steps you take on your trips, sending updates on safe arrivals and communicating in a way you'd like your teen to."
Safety Matters
Ensure your teen understands hygiene practices and potential health risks in specific regions. It may be advisable to get vaccinations before travelling and to follow local habits, such as eating only fruit they peel themselves, avoiding ice in drinks, and so on.
Being substance-aware is crucial, especially if your teen uses any substances, including alcohol. Discuss the risks of accepting drinks from strangers, and advise them never to return to a drink they've left alone for any reason. Buying only sealed, branded items is one way to stay safer.
Sex education should cover consent, protection, birth control, and healthrelated issues like STDs. Encourage them to learn about local customs and laws to avoid misunderstandings. Paula says, "Sometimes, terrible things happen. Be frank and open about safety risks, both obvious and subtle. Use news articles, travel advisories, and other resources to discuss issues like substance use, personal security, and the locations they're visiting."
Importantly, encourage your teen to trust their instincts about people and situations. Ensure they have a plan for what to do if they feel unsafe, including having emergency contacts and knowing how to call local authorities. "This will provide them with confidence, reassurance, a more worldly outlook, and a feeling that 'you're in it together' before they head off," Paula adds.
Maintain Communication
Have a discussion about what communication will look like while your teen is away. Be clear if a text will do, or if you want a video call. Depending on the circumstances, time difference, frequency of moving and other factors, how often will it be reasonable to communicate? Plan for scheduled check-ins to avoid being intrusive. Know your teen’s itinerary so you can prompt for pre- and postarrival confirmation. Request that they share their location with you or a friend, especially if they’re deviating from an itinerary or building one as they go. "Another great idea is a group chat," Paula continues, "Setting one up, especially if friends are travelling together, provides an update in a simplified manner to all parents at the same time (and means you can all fret together!)."
Look After You!
BUILDING AWARENESS OF HOMESICKNESS, CULTURE SHOCK, AND FRUSTRATION IS KEY
Face Emotions
While the sense of independence can be thrilling, the realities of navigating new environments, managing relationships, and making decisions can be a bit daunting. “For many teens, the initial excitement of travelling solo or with friends soon gives way to the realisation that it’s more demanding than they expected. “Peer pressure often comes up when in a group. It’s hard for teens to go against the grain when everyone else is doing something, but it’s fundamental that they can voice their opinions and stand up for their personal choices, even when it’s awkward.”
Building awareness of feelings like homesickness and frustration is also key. “Culture shock is a real part of travelling, and it’s okay to feel unsettled. Understanding that it’s natural and acknowledging these emotional responses helps children to move through them more effectively," says Paula.
In addition, decision fatigue can be an issue. From deciding what to eat to figuring out transport, it can feel overwhelming. Paula continues, “Teaching prioritisation skills is helpful. When teens know how to assess what matters, and make decisions that align with their goals, they can reduce the mental load of making constant choices. Ask them how to break down tasks and focus on what needs to be done in the moment."
It can be hard to let go and allow your teen to move into being independent. Have realistic expectations of them and yourself. Get savvy about what's developmentally appropriate for your teen and support them to reach these milestones. “When worries grip you, pause and consider whether they're realistic,” suggests Paula.” Also, have your own person to talk with - your partner, a friend, or a therapist. Ultimately, focus on the growth of both you and your child. And give yourself a hefty pat on the back for raising your teen to be prepared and curious in life, while continuing to be a strong support for them.”

Can Swimming Pools Hurt Your Teeth?
Living in Singapore means enjoying plenty of pool time, but it’s important to be aware of how chlorinated water can affect your dental health.

Living in Singapore likely means you and your family spend a lot more time in the pool. While swimming year-round can be great, we often overlook the impact it can have on our dental health. Pool water, especially if it’s highly chlorinated, can potentially lead to enamel erosion, causing tooth staining, sensitivity, and an increased risk of cavities over time. To help us understand the best ways to protect our teeth, we spoke to USA certified dentist, Dr. Josh Liu from Expat Dental.
Chlorine and Its Effects on Dental Enamel
Chlorine is a necessary disinfectant in pools and water play areas. However, when too much chlorine is added to pool water, it can lower the pH, making the water more acidic. When the pH level of pool water falls outside the ideal range of 7.2 - 7.8, it can become corrosive to dental enamel - the hard, protective outer layer of your teeth.
Dental enamel protects against decay and damage to your teeth. While this protective layer is known for being the hardest substance in the human body, it is not impervious to damage and does not regenerate. This makes it crucial to recognise the signs of enamel erosion early so you can limit your exposure.
Who’s at Risk of Dental Erosion from Pool Water?
Dental erosion from pool water can affect anyone who spends extended periods in the pool, such as: Competitive/Frequent Swimmers: Those who swim for 6+ hours a week.
Children and Adolescents: Younger individuals often have more porous enamel, making them more susceptible to erosion from acidic environments. They also tend to keep their mouths open while swimming or frequently ingest pool water.
People with Inadequate Oral Hygiene Practices

Expat Dental – Novena Medical Center Clinic
#08-15/16 Novena Medical Center, 10 Sinaran Drive Office: 6397 6318 WhatsApp: 9656 0697
Those Consuming Acidic Foods/Drinks: People who consume a diet high in acids (such as soda or citrus fruits) may increase the risk of erosion.
Individuals with Existing Dental Issues: Those with pre-existing dental problems, such as enamel hypoplasia or acid reflux.
Signs Your Teeth Might Be Suffering From Too Much Pool Time
Signs of enamel erosion can include:
Tooth sensitivity
Visible discoloration or yellowing of teeth
A glossy/shiny appearance on the tooth surface
Development of small dents or grooves on the teeth
Teeth appearing more translucent, particularly at the edges
Tips for Protecting Your Teeth While Swimming
Whether you’re a casual swimmer or a competitive athlete, follow these simple tips to protect your teeth in the pool:
1
Regular Dental Check-Ups: Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings. If enamel erosion is occurring, your dentist can detect it early and monitor the health of your teeth.
2
Rinse Before and After Swimming: Rinse your mouth with fresh water before and after swimming.
3
Use a Mouthguard: Some studies suggest that a mouthguard may provide a barrier between your teeth and chlorinated water. Talk to your dentist to see if this could be a good option for you.
4
Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Floss daily and brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

A Sense of Belonging
Expatriates and Third Culture Kids (TCKs) face shared issues when it comes to adapting to new cultures, grappling with shifting identities, and feeling out of place. Both can feel disconnected from their home countries and struggle with evolving senses of self when they find themselves in foreign environments.
Challenges for TCKs Embracing Diversity
TCKs are children who grow up in cultures different from their parents’, often due to their parents’ international careers as expatriates, diplomats, or global professionals. These children develop unique identities shaped by a blend of their family’s heritage and the culture of their host countries, forming a “third culture” dynamic.

Many expatriate partners also face a sense of lost purpose when their careers are paused, and financial dependence on their expatriate partner can strain the relationship. The added responsibility of supporting children’s adjustment to their new environment further complicates the experience.
TCKs frequently relocate, which helps them to adapt to new environments and societies. However, this mobility can lead to a sense of rootlessness, as they may feel at home “everywhere and nowhere”. While they're adaptable, they often struggle with questions of identity and belonging, unable to fully connect with any single culture. Emotional instability, isolation, and difficulty forming lasting relationships can arise.
Despite these struggles, TCKs develop valuable skills such as linguistic proficiency, cultural sensitivity, and a global perspective. However, constant relocations can disrupt academic

progress and social connections, creating instability. Over time, TCKs cultivate resilience, empathy, and open-mindedness, preparing them for international careers and cross-cultural understanding. Their experiences offer them a unique worldview, making them adaptable and globally minded individuals.
Challenges for Expatriate Partners Identity, Isolation & Reinvention
Being the partner of an expatriate who has moved for work presents both opportunities and concerns. One of the primary difficulties is the loss of professional identity, as many partners leave behind established careers when they relocate. This loss is compounded by the social isolation that often accompanies moving to a new country, where building connections can be tricky. Additionally, adjusting to new cultural norms, managing household responsibilities, and navigating unfamiliar systems can feel overwhelming.

“Adjusting to new cultural norms and navigating unfamiliar systems can feel overwhelming”
To ease this transition, expatriate partners can explore professional development through remote work, online courses, or volunteering. Joining expatriate communities, attending cultural classes, or participating in local activities can help build social networks and establish a sense of belonging. Focusing on personal growth, sharing responsibilities with the expatriate partner, and creating routines can also provide stability. Open communication and regular relationship check-ins are key to managing emotional and relational roadblocks.
Encouraging financial independence and involving the expatriate partner in decision-making can help achieve a more balanced life abroad. With the right support and mindset, settling into a new country can become one of personal growth, empowerment and fulfilment.
In both cases, the challenges faced by expatriate wives and TCKs can lead to personal transformation. Their experiences of adaptation, resilience, and cultural immersion provide them with a broad and valuable perspective, preparing them for future success in a globalised world.

What are some smart money rules for expats in SG?
While the rules for personal finance are largely universal, living as an expat in Singapore offers unique opportunities to optimise your financial situation. If you’re planning to return home someday, it’s important to ensure that your time in Singapore leaves you with more than just hazy memories and some teak furniture!
RULE 1 Save at Least 20% of Your Income
Living in Singapore, you’re likely paying less income tax than you’re accustomed to or compared to what you’d pay in countries like Australia, New Zealand, the UK, or many others. Don’t let this opportunity slip by. It’s tempting to increase your lifestyle with the extra income, thinking of it as a ‘pay rise from the taxman’. However, those who are most successful with their finances will prioritise saving this additional money and using it to accelerate their wealthbuilding. If you can, aim to save more than 20% — although 20% is a great starting point.
RULE 2 Mind the Gap
Unless you’re a Singaporean Citizen or PR, you likely won’t have automatic retirement savings, such as a Superannuation or Pension. These are often the prime earning years of your life, so don’t allow a significant gap to form in your retirement savings. Act now to plug that gap by redirecting the funds you would typically invest back home into other investments.

RULE 3 Plan Ahead for Future Tax Implications
One of the standout advantages of living in Singapore is the ability to invest and enjoy capital gains without the burden of capital gains tax. However, once you leave Singapore, this benefit may no longer apply, and you’ll likely face a more taxing regime. Depending on where you’re moving to, there may be opportunities to preserve these tax-free gains for the long term, and even for succession planning. The earlier you start, the better – don’t wait until it’s too late to maximise tax efficiencies that will benefit you in the long term.
Manage
the
Risk
RULE 4
of Company Shares
Many expats receive share awards as part of their compensation package, and over time, these can accumulate significantly, becoming a substantial portion of your overall net worth. It’s crucial to periodically divest to mitigate the risk of having too much reliance on a single company’s performance. After all, while the company provides your income and contributes to your net worth, what would happen if things were to take an unexpected turn?
RULE 5 Be Patient and Avoid HighRisk Investments
With the ease of setting up trading accounts these days, everyone is an armchair tipster, and it’s tempting to try to get rich quickly by taking excessive risks. However, it’s wise to avoid buying and selling individual shares, and very dangerous to use leverage (such as CFDs – Contracts for Difference) or to engage in Foreign Exchange trading. The potential for loss is high, and the odds are that you will lose more than you gain. Not only will it drain your time, energy, and mental peace, but it’s also far more effective to invest in diversified, long-term strategies like mutual funds or passive index funds, which can help you compound wealth gradually.
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.
The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. You are advised to seek independent tax advice from suitably qualified professionals before making any decision as to the tax implications of any investment.

Keen to try recipes using different flours? RAELENE TAN presents an A-Z of different varieties.
ATTA whole-wheat flour, used extensively in Indian cooking, makes unleavened flatbreads (chapatti) and paratha. Versatile Indian staple BESAN (chickpea flour) makes dumplings and sweets. My family enjoys besan's nutty taste and woody aroma when making pakoras (vegetable fritters). From whole cassava root, CASSAVA FLOUR, carbohydrate-rich, prepares biscuits, bread, hamburgers, and pizza bases. Try DURUM WHEAT FLOUR for pasta making.
With a long history, nutritious singlegrain EINKORN wheat flour has an earthy yet delicate taste, used for cakes, pancakes, and muffins.
FRYING FLOUR coats fish, meat, and vegetables, yielding a crisp outer layer.
GLUTINOUS RICE FLOUR, chewy and sticky when cooked, is used in Asian dumplings and baked items, including nian gao (Chinese New Year cake) and tang yuan (rice balls). Containing mung beans, HOON KWE, gluten-free, conjures delicious Nonya cakes (kueh), including kueh pisang (banana).
Known as the gold standard for making pasta and Neapolitan pizza, ITALIAN OO wheat flour makes kneading easier. From Thailand, aromatic JASMINE RICE

and pizza bases.
Ancient wheat flour, KHORASAN, has a high-protein content. Used for baked goods, bread, and beer. Sampling hot cross buns made with Khorasan flour in Western Australia provided smooth textures and appealing buttery flavours
LOTUS ROOT FLOUR, from the freshwater aquatic plant, has known health benefits. Used for thickening Chinese-style sauces and baking cakes containing grated lotus root.
MUNG BEAN FLOUR, see above Hoon Kwe. Make NOODLES using flour from the suggestions above. OAT FLOUR makes brownies, muffins, and pancakes.

Due to its moisture content, POTATO FLOUR is good for baking biscuits and bread. QUINOA FLOUR’s sterling reputation is for its nutritional value. Make flapjacks or lightly fried vegetable fritters for wholesomeness.
From raw ground rice, RICE FLOUR, an Asian favourite for sweet or savoury dishes like noodles, roti (bread),

SUGEE FLOUR, also known as semolina flour, is from durum wheat. Golden-hued sugee cake, dense yet light, is muchloved amongst Singapore’s and Malaysia’s Eurasian communities – and this writer!
From the starch of cassava plants, TAPIOCA FLOUR is popular when baking. Tapioca pudding brings forth my happy childhood memories. UNBLEACHED FLOUR ages naturally after milling, resulting in denser grains than bleached grains, providing firmer textures when baking. VICTORIA SPONGE, light and fluffy, much loved in Australia with its jam and cream filling, is made with self-raising flour.
WATER CHESTNUT FLOUR from the aquatic vegetable makes nicely crisp batters. Water chestnut cake is enjoyed with dim sum and is a Chinese New Year treat.
Prepare Xmas hampers containing various flour types, complete with recipes, for relatives or friends who enjoy baking or cooking.
YAM FLOUR, from yam plants, makes good Asian sweet treats. Pancakes, too. ZERO OO FLOUR from Italy; see above. Enjoy!

Where are we heading?
Straight to the Swiss Alps, without the need for a passport! Coucou is a charming Swiss restaurant in the Tanjong Pagar area, offering hearty Alpine classics in a stylish yet cosy setting. Look out for the signature cuckoo clocks and the warm, inviting glow from within.
Any backstory?
Since opening in October 2019, this intimate 64-seater restaurant has built a reputation for its indulgent cheese fondues, crisp golden rösti, and expertly curated Swiss wines. Whether you’re a homesick Swiss expat or simply a lover of melted cheese (who isn’t?), this spot is a gloriously snug escape.
First impressions?
Stepping inside, you feel instantly transported to a chic Swiss chaletminus the snow. The elegant interior, complete with rustic wooden furnishings and whimsical cuckoo clocks, create an inviting atmosphere. There’s a warmth to the place, both in decor and hospitality. The courtyard offers a charming alfresco option for those who like their fromage with a side of fresh air.
What’s the vibe?
Relaxed yet refined. Whether you’re here for a long, leisurely lunch or an intimate dinner, the atmosphere is convivial and welcoming. The Swiss staff are friendly and enthusiastic, eager to share their love for the cuisine and make recommendations. This is the kind of place where a simple meal turns into an experience - especially when you get lost in convo over a bubbling pot of fondue.
Tell us about the food . . . Oh, where to begin? We kicked off with

the Truite en Tartare, a fresh and zesty trout tartare paired with dill, sour cream, and green chillies - a perfect palate awakener. The Malakoff, a traditional Gruyère cheese dome, was decadently crispy on the outside and oozing with rich, melted cheese on the inside. As for the Famous Coucou Salad, its curly greens and Grand-Père dressing added a refreshing contrast to the indulgence ahead.

The devilishly creamy veal stew paired beautifully with the crisp golden potato pancake.
And for dessert?
The Caramelized Lemon Tart with Raspberry delivered a dreamy sweet-tart balance, rounding off our meal on a bright and zesty note.

The pièce de résistance, was a Fondue Moitié-Moitié, a heavenly pot of half Gruyère, half Vacherin cheese, served with crusty bread for dipping. Each bite was pure, molten bliss. But just when we thought things couldn’t get any better, the mains arrived. The Sea Bass Fillet with Saffron Sauce was delicately cooked, flaky, and fragrant, while the ZurichStyle Veal Ragout with Rösti was comfort food at its finest.
What
about the drinks?
Swiss wines are the hidden gems of the wine world, and Coucou showcases them with aplomb. Whether you opt for a crisp white or a robust red, the selection pairs well with the hearty Alpine fare. There’s also an extensive drinks menu with cocktails and spirits.
When to go?
Anytime you’re in the mood for a fondue-fuelled feast. Just be warned - once you hear that first “cuckoo,” you might never want to leave!

MOGĀ you say?
Welcome to the latest gem in Singapore’s ever-evolving cocktail scene, tucked away in the Pullman Singapore Hill Street hotel. The name “MOGĀ” translates to “modern girls” in Japanese, but don't worry - it’s not just for the ladies.
What’s the concept behind it?
Inspired by the 1920's Prohibition Era, MOGĀ blends the mysterious allure of that period with the rich culinary traditions of Japan. This fusion results in a unique, almost theatrical dining experience. Classic cocktails meet Japanese ingredients and flavours to create something unexpected and unforgettable.

Tell us about the menu . . . It feels like a love affair between traditional Japanese elements and modern flair. Spicy XL Clams kick things off with plump clams swimming in a rich, umami-packed broth made from saikyo miso and chilli bean paste, and coriander.
Craving something with bite? The Crispy Squid delivers. It’s perfectly tender inside, while the outside gives a satisfying crunch, thanks to the sansho fish sauce, kizami yuzu, and a hint of green chilli. Then there’s the Miso Eggplant. This dish is silky, charred perfection, drizzled with a sweet-savoury miso glaze that gives it a smoky richness.

What are we drinking?
For something bold and savoury, the Dirty Saketini might knock your socks off. Imagine a Martini, but with sake, shochu, and a house-made pickling brine - it’s like umami in a glass and unmissable.
If you’re after something indulgent yet refreshing, The Frozen Drink is your new best friend. This Japanese-inspired milkshake combines whisky, taro liqueur, matcha, and azuki beans. Surprisingly, it’s not too sweet, but it’s creamy, rich, and just the right kind of decadent.

Season 3 of The White Lotus is catapulting Thailand into the spotlight once more. As the country braces itself for a fresh tourist boom, JO UPCRAFT checks it out.

Thailand is used to getting attention. In 1974, the Bond film The Man With The Golden Gun shot several scenes around Bangkok and Phang Nga Bay. In the 1980's, the Rambo franchise used the awe-inspiring scenery of Chiang Mai as a backdrop. In the 2000's, The Beach chose Koh Phi Phi to depict its fictional secret idyll, while Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, and Hugh Grant packed for Phuket to film Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
Thanks to the award-winning HBO series The White Lotus, The Land of Smiles is once again set for stardom. If you’ve had a chance to catch the show’s third series, out now, it likely won’t just be the high-octane drama that’s keeping you hooked, but also the striking backdrop of Koh Samui. Sitting pretty in the Gulf of Thailand, this darling island has so far kept its beauty under wraps. But naturally, word gets out. “The kingdom’s exotic natural beauty, rich historical sites, and diverse landscapes are the perfect settings to share our fascinating culture, fantastic cuisine, top-notch wellness offerings, and people,” said Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Just as the previous filming locations of series one and two saw an influx of tourists to Hawaii and Italy, the "White
Lotus Effect" is already in full swing in the region, with many major travel operators seeing spikes in bookings. Find Your White Lotus tours abound and rooms at Four Seasons Koh Samui - where the majority of filming took place - are selling for USD$12,000 per night.

Thankfully, there are more affordable places to stay on Koh Samui, and I'm on my way to one of them - Ban Suriya, a luxury villa on Lipa Noi beach. Unlike my first jaunt to Thailand back in 2002, when I landed with a backpack and the name of a beach scribbled on an A4 piece of paper, my arrival at the property is a far more stylish experience. I’m picked up by my host, The Luxe Nomad, at Koh Samui airport, and whisked by private vehicle to the lesser-explored west of the island, just 20 minutes away.
Beachfront escape
Ban Suriya oozes take-it-easy vibes. The moment I step inside, I feel like I’m in an

episode of Selling Sunset, just without the tan, teeth, and endless legs. It's fresh, contemporary, stunning and snazzy. Being a beachfront escape, the entire villa is awash with radiant natural light, making you feel warm and welcome from the get-go. Designed with sophistication and style by a Singaporean designer, I enter an extensive ground-floor social area where sleek tones meet vibrant blues that echo the hues of the sky and sea beyond. Before me lies an elegantly appointed dining space with a large table nestled between a curl-up-and-cosy reading nook and a relaxing "media" lounge with a sinkable sofa, TV, books and board games, perfect for unwinding in the evening or for escaping the sunshine during the day. Upstairs fast becomes my favourite spot with a second chill-out area complete with vibrant artwork, cool light fittings, swinging egg chair, and an old-school Planter’s chair. Is it just me, or is said chair crying out to be joined by a cheeky G’n’T?
Leading off the upstairs area is a balcony which makes the ideal setting for some sneaky sunbathing, a game of giant chess, or a yoga session underneath swaying

palms. Alternatively, it’s the perfect place to plonk on a high seat and simply marvel at your manor below. Highlights from this angle include views of the sparkling 20-metre swim-up pool and surrounding sun loungers, the sprawling front lawn, a cute treehouse begging to be enjoyed with a cocktail in hand, and a dining table made for a patio party. Ahead lies the fine, white-sand beach of Lipa Noi, with the Gulf of Thailand stretching as far as the eye can see.
Framing the lawn are some of the six large and uniquely themed bedrooms. Complete with oceanfront views, each one features modern Asian architecture and is inspired by concepts such as a butterfly theme and an under-the-sea motif, providing pretty surroundings and a sense of peace. For those seeking extra seclusion, two private pavilions - one with a double bed and another with a twin room - offer fabulous hidey-homes. The twin room, especially, is great for kids, with its adjoining lounge and smaller pool so little ones can hang out away - but not too far - from parents. Nestled behind the pool is a gym space with minimal equipment, but great for mat work or a personal training session.
With a wide range of facilities available, Ban Suriya can comfortably accommodate 15 people, making it a superb choice for larger families or groups of friends. It can also host up to 150 guests for weddings. It feels so romantic as the sun sets with a wash of gold and crimson each evening, that I almost consider proposing to the pool maintenance man myself.
Exquisite dining, impeccable service
The villa’s wow factors don’t stop at its design and vistas – they also extend to the food and service. Here, you truly live the high life with your own staff on hand. I genuinely want to take the kind and wise villa manager, Tik, back to Singapore with me! The villa’s private chef, Chef Teddy, brings 26 years of experience, expertly blending traditional Thai cooking with innovative twists. Just tell him what you fancy eating each day, or ask him to surprise you, and he’ll whip up some epic feasts using fresh ingredients from the local Sri Far market and nearby stores, mixed with herbs such as chilli, kaffir lime, basil, lemongrass, and ginger - all homegrown in Ban Suriya's grounds. While some guests send an in-depth daily

meal planner ahead of arrival, I let Chef Teddy lead the way. Favourites included his Pad Thai (see right) encased in a delicate omelette, which explodes as you cut through the thin layer of egg packing thick slurry noodles, bean sprouts, carrots, and sweet roast pork. For dessert, his Bua Loy Nam King - black sesame rice balls floating in invigorating ginger tea - was an absolute banger.
Alongside taking part in Chef Teddy’s cooking classes and badgering him for his secret recipes, there are all manner of activities available for all ages. For children, there’s a pool table, table tennis, volleyball, and inflatable unicorns can also magically appear by the pool if you so wish. All physical senses are experienced at a weirdly heightened level at Ban Suriya - in a good way. The smell of Thai ylang-ylang, the taste of Chef Teddy’s special spicy jus, the twist of lime in the mango daiquiri, and the whisper of the breeze as it dances through the trees.
Understandably, you may not want to leave this pocket of pure paradise, but if

you do, Koh Samui has plenty to offer. Ang Thong Marine National Park boasts aweinspiring landscapes and diverse wildlife, while the Dusit Deva Cultural Centre provides a unique insight into the rich heritage of Thailand. However, if The White Lotus bug has well and truly bitten, Thai insiders claim that key scenes were shot on the nearby and remote Taling Ngam Beach, as well as at Fisherman’s Village in Bophut, with its wooden shophouses and lively market. As you stroll amidst the traditional Thai architecture, soaking up the buzzy atmosphere, just keep your eyes peeled for signs of high-jinx, outrageous misbehaviour, and the odd illicit holiday act in the shadows . . !

Taking On Taupo
ANZA Cycling ventured beyond Singapore’s usual routes, and took their biking adventures all the way to New Zealand.

Talk about talented! Five members of ANZA Cycling - Melanie Speet, Haythem El Ansary, Vlad Dzurilla, Russel Van Der Water, and Trent Standenrecently faced off against the world’s elite triathletes at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Taupo, New Zealand.
Under the glorious New Zealand sun, the athletes tackled the challenging course: a 1.9km swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Taupo, followed by a demanding 90km bike ride through the picturesque countryside. The final leg was a gruelling 21km run along the stunning lakefront.
Individual Highlights
Proving that everyone's journey is individual, and skillsets are never the same, Melanie emerged from the water first in her age group, showcasing her impressive swimming prowess.
Russel battled through debilitating cramps during the run, finding strength

and support from a fellow competitor.
Haythem delivered a blistering run, completing the half marathon in an incredible one hour and 30 minutes. Meanwhile, Trent overcame pesky mechanical issues on his bike to finish strong, demonstrating his resilience and determination.
A big pat on the back goes to Vlad, who achieved a personal best time, a testament to his hard work and dedication on this challenging course.
“It was an amazing experience at my first Ironman 70.3 World Champ in Taupo," he says. "I enjoyed swimming in crystal waters, biking in the picturesque countryside, and finally running alongside Lake Taupo, where I put everything on the table to dig deep to deliver my PB. Crossing the finish line was an emotional moment for me.”
As we approach the 2025 season, ANZA's triathletes are gearing up for another year of exciting challenges.

Empowering Youth Through Cycling
ANZA Cycling has partnered with Cambodian organisation REACH Siem Reap (reachsiemreap.org), who are focused on empowering children through cycling. This exciting initiative aims to leverage the power of cycling to improve the lives of young people in the city.
The partnership involves ANZA Cycling members contributing their time and expertise to support the organisation’s programmes. We’re looking at: Coaching and mentoring: Sharing cycling skills and knowledge with local children
Equipment donations: Contributing used but still functional bicycles and cycling gear
Volunteer work: Assisting with the organisation’s daily operations and community outreach. This partnership can have a significant positive impact on the lives of children in Siem Reap, providing them with opportunities for physical activity, social development, and personal growth.
Interested in getting involved? Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or simply passionate about supporting this cause, reach out to ANZA Cycling at info. anza.com.sg for more on how you can contribute to this initiative.

Giving back is the goal
ANZA Soccer’s latest initiative brings the joy of the beautiful game to Cambodian youth, proving that sport has the power to unite and uplift communities around the world.

At ANZA Soccer, we believe in the power of sport to bring people together - not just on the pitch, but within the community as well. Over the years, our commitment to giving back has been a core part of our mission, with involvement in several initiatives. In December last year, we had the incredible opportunity to make a meaningful charitable donation, creating a tangible impact on the lives of young soccer players in Cambodia through a collaboration with Good Neighbors Cambodia (GNC).
GNC is an international humanitarian and development NGO, running in over 50 countries, that strives to make the world a better place without hunger and where people live in harmony. Operating in Cambodia since 2004, the initiative saw the donation of 86 soccer jerseys and shorts, as well as scrimmage vests, and socks to children at Toul Rokar Koh Primary School in Phnom Penh. The collaboration emerged after Good Neighbors shared photos of their newly constructed soccer pitch on social media, and ANZA member Rinka Perez (half Cambodian herself) saw the images and felt inspired to help.
Thanks to ANZA Soccer, the jerseys were gifted to the young soccer players at the school. Many of them had never had the opportunity to play in a full
Chay In, a Grade 3 student with a passion for soccer, shared her joy, saying she was thrilled to have a proper soccer outfit to support her love for the game, which she has been playing for years.

THE SOCCER JERSEYS SERVE AS A REMINDER THAT OTHERS CARE ABOUT THEIR FUTURE
kit before. With an active and growing community of players, the donation of jerseys was a perfect way to support and enhance their enthusiasm for the sport. Eighty-one boys and girls aged 5 -11 received the donations, prioritising those who regularly got on the pitch.
Sense of belonging
Many of the children had previously played in their school uniforms, limiting their ability to fully enjoy the game. The jerseys were sent to Cambodia with the hope that they would not only foster pride and excitement for the sport but also instil a sense of unity and support for the children.
Monineath, Grade 3, couldn’t wait to wear his new jersey to soccer practice, where he plays as part of a community team - a sport he’s been passionate about since he was six. Phalkun, a standout soccer player in Grade 3, expressed his gratitude for his new scrimmage vest, which he wore proudly while playing with friends during recess.
“Being able to wear a new soccer jersey goes

Srey Pheak, another Grade 3 student, beamed with pride as she wore her practice scrimmage vest.
beyond improving comfort - it boosts players' morale, encourages participation from both boys and girls, and generates a sense of pride and belonging,” explains GNC’s Grant Department Coordinator, Priscilla Kim Ong. “The jerseys serve as a symbol of the children’s dedication to soccer and a reminder that others care about their future. Receiving them provided a renewed sense of hope, giving the children the confidence to pursue their passions and believe in their potential."
The donation was made possible through the generous efforts of the ANZA Soccer community, who understood the significance of getting proper gear to young athletes eager to pursue their sporting dreams. “Soccer has a special place in Cambodia and is loved by people of all ages. It’s something you’ll see played everywhere, from open fields to schoolyards, often with makeshift goals. It’s a fantastic way for kids to express themselves, challenge each other, and think big,” Priscilla continues. “For many children, soccer is a bright spot in their day. It gives them the chance to run, laugh, and enjoy a sense of freedom."
The ANZA - GNC initiative has also been a super-fulfilling experience for ANZA Soccer, reinforcing the values of teamwork and empathy. By helping those who are less fortunate, ANZA Soccer has demonstrated its commitment to making a positive impact - not just in Singapore, but across borders. Collaborations like this remind us that in life we all have a role to play in lifting others up.

It’s coming home!
A two-day cricket series between the Patong Penguins and ANZA Champs was filled with dramatic turnarounds, memorable performances, and a battle for the championship cup.

DAY 1 Friday's Game (25:25 Match)
After winning the toss, the Patong Penguins looked to capitalise on the favourable bowling conditions. Their quick bowlers, Sajal Gaur and Jaqsir Brar, ripped through the top order, who were struggling to adjust to the local wicket. A further flurry of wickets meant that ANZA was in danger of being sent back to their hotel early, sitting at 63/5 in the 13th over.
Luckily, the middle order wasn’t ready to give up and decided a fightback was due. Kane Stavens and Akash Dogra combined for a crucial 31-run stand, pushing the score over 100. Abhilash Bhagat and Ian Sinclair added a few handy runs, and ANZA Champs finished with a respectable total of 123 runs.
RESTORED HOPE
Requiring 124 runs to win, the home side felt confident, knowing the opportune conditions of the wicket. However, after an extended rain break, any hopes of a quick and easy victory were swiftly quashed. The Penguins found themselves wobbling at 2 wickets for 9 runs inside the first 3 overs, thanks to ANZA bowlers Abhishek Ravish and Ian Sinclair.
Wickets continued to tumble, with Dheer Bhatnagar taking a couple of scalps, supported well by Chris Werfel at the opposite end. The Penguins were quickly reduced to 6 wickets for 60 runs with only 10 overs remaining. The target now seemed very imposing, but the Penguins’ lower order of Michael Flowers and Brock began rebuilding, pushing quick singles and punishing any loose deliveries. They restored hope for the locals, with a 47-run partnership that swung the game back in the Penguins’ favour.
It all came down to the penultimate over, and with only two balls to spare, the Penguins waddled across the line. ANZA came up painstakingly short in an absolute thriller.

Two days of play for Patong Penguins and ANZA Champs

DAY 2 Saturday Cup Game (30:30 Match)
The two teams met again for the crucial 30-over championship game for the coveted Cup, which had not graced Singapore’s shores for close to a decade.
The Penguins sent the visitors to field under the warm sun. It seemed like a cunning move, but ANZA didn't fall for it. Abhishek Ravish, fresh off a good game the day before, stepped up another level, partnering with Dheer Bhatnagar and Kane Stavens to unleash some excellent early bowling. The Penguins’ top order, featuring the stars from the previous day, collapsed. The Penguins were reduced to 4 wickets for 24 runs after a disastrous power play.
Desperate for runs, the Penguins had the good fortune of Adrian Lie stepping up to bat at #5. As wickets tumbled around him, Adrian calmly batted his way through the innings, finishing 75 in a masterful display on a tricky wicket. He even managed a final stand with the #11 batsman, Ajay Sampige, with whom he shared a 33-run partnership. The final score: 139 all out, a very defendable total.
FIND SOME MAGIC
ANZA’s openers, Reddi Kotha and Graeme Gardiner, were determined to start well after their disappointment the day before. They scored freely throughout the power play, racing to 44 runs without loss after 8 overs. Both batsmen departed by the 12th over, and ANZA seemed in a strong position. Haroon Mufti started scoring well, but eventually, the bowling took its toll. A mini-collapse followed, and by the 15-over break, 5 wickets had fallen, leaving the game finely poised.
After the break, it came down to wicketkeeper Tariq Janodien and bowler Dheer Bhatnagar to steady the ship. A brief cameo from Kane Stavens rescued the visitors. Tariq made a patient 18 runs from 32 balls, Dheer contributed 15 runs, and Kane scored 23 at a run a ball.
The Penguins threw everything at the champs in the closing overs, utilising 8 bowlers to try and find some magic, but couldn’t stop the flow of runs. ANZA Champs comfortably surpassed the total, with wickets and overs in hand. The Cup finally came home.
All in all, it was two great games, awesome hospitality, and some fantastic prizes from the Penguins. This tour summed up what cricket and friendship are all about.
The 2025 game is on Halloween weekend. It should be scarysign up!

The Cup finally came home!
SMALL & MIGHTY!
The start of the year welcomed ANZA Netball's youngest players to their first session, some new parent volunteers, and familiar faces as coaches.

Welcome to the 2019 cohort of ANZA netball players! Our group of five-year-olds had a fabulous first session in January, with many eager parents watching from the sidelines. Typically, parents volunteer to coach once they see how fun and rewarding it is to be involved, as well as how much their children enjoy it. The ANZA Netball volunteer pool has grown each year, with parents eager to be part of our wonderful community. As a result, we now have more coaches than ever, and it’s fantastic to see so many parents actively participating in their daughters’ sporting experiences.
For this 2019 cohort, we’re fortunate to have some experienced, long-term ANZA

families involved, including the Butler family (fourth daughter) and the Bishop family (third daughter). Parents from both families, along with some new faces, jumped in to help as volunteer coaches during the very first session. ANZA Netball truly appreciates every contribution because, without our volunteers, the success of our netball programme wouldn’t be possible.
Warm-up Games
The young netball players began their first session with fun warm-up games, focusing on balance, movement, and coordination. They were then introduced to the soft balls. Even the shyest new member, who
was initially hiding on the sidelines, was tossing the ball and clapping by the end of the session. It was a terrific first experience, and no doubt, the girls will be eager to return!
WITHOUT OUR VOLUNTEERS, THE SUCCESS OF OUR NETBALL PROGRAMME WOULDN’T BE POSSIBLE
The super-cute 2019 cohort of ANZA Netball

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER
Jacquie Arnott played with ANZA Netball in the late 90’s when the club was based at UWC. She returned to Canada with her family at the age of 12 and went on to play basketball and volleyball as netball wasn’t such a big sport in Canada. Jacquie has now returned to Singapore with her own family and her five-year-old daughter Clementine has started with the new 2019 cohort. It is marvellous to see two generations of ANZA netball players together!

RECENT PLAYERS RETURN
The 2019 group session was led by Coach Charlotte, a former ANZA player from the 2000's. After leaving Singapore to attend university, Charlotte is now back in the ANZA family as a coach. She was assisted by teen coach Annelotte, who has recently been playing for ANZA. Having the session led by two such fun and experienced ANZA netballers made the training extra special and meaningful for the young girls.

Lynette Tan 10 MINUTES WITH
In the realm of travel, nowhere is more out of this world than space! We sit down with the trailblazing Lynette Tan, CEO and founder of Space Faculty in Singapore.
What sparked your love of space?
Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked, from the mechanics of simple machines to the mysteries of the universe. Aged five, I made my first “space rocket” out of an oversized cardboard box! This curiosity led me to
WHEN YOUNG GIRLS SEE WOMEN LEADING IN THE SPACE INDUSTRY, IT TURNS DREAMS INTO POSSIBILITIES

pursue a degree and master’s in chemical engineering at Stanford and, eventually, to found Space Faculty.

What made you realise you could create opportunities in this area?
While working in both government and private sectors in Singapore, I noticed that while Singapore and Asia are brimming with talent, the pathways to deep-tech fields like space exploration, AI, and robotics seemed out of reach for many. I wanted to create a pathway for individuals to explore these exciting areas. That vision became Space Faculty.
What’s the mission of Space Faculty?
It exists to help build a “learning roadmap” for students and makes the space sector accessible to those passionate about exploring its potential. We aim to inspire and equip future leaders through unique programmes like the Space Entrepreneurship Bootcamp and the Nano-Satellite Building Workshop with experts from the United States Air Force Academy, held in the second quarter of the year.
What inspires you about working in the space sector?
Space is about dreaming big, solving challenges, and creating opportunities. It’s a frontier that connects science, entrepreneurship, and humanity. Helping others unlock their potential in this realm is incredibly rewarding.
What role do you see space tourism playing in the future of space exploration?
Space tourism is crucial for driving
innovation and lowering costs in space exploration. It sparks demand for new technologies and makes space travel more accessible. AI is also a key player in the field, offering groundbreaking potential. It can enhance the affordability, efficiency, and ambition of deep space missions, making the future of space exploration even more exciting!
With International Women’s Day in March, how do you inspire more females to get involved?
The STEM field is male-dominated so representation is key. When young girls see women leading in the space industry, it turns dreams into possibilities. Space Faculty also facilitates internships for both local and international students to understand the space industry, and shadow leaders or work in space companies.
What advice would you give to someone about entering the space field?
I’d encourage them to join space communities and programmes, like the International Space Challenge, the world’s longest-running space competition, or Expand Space, an annual event connecting innovators globally. Space offers endless opportunities fuelled by experimentation, learning, and leadership - all core to Space Faculty’s mission.
