Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has o cially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent.
Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February
identity, "Negro History Week" had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses.
President Gerald Ford o cially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Today, Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. history and society—from activists and civil rights pioneers such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Rosa Parks to leaders in industry, politics, science, culture and more.
Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.
The Black History Month 2023 theme, “Black Resistance,” explores how "African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms and police killings," since the nation's earliest days.

As productive people, many of us are tempted to multitask. Why accomplish one thing, when you can instead accomplish two things at the same time. Sometimes we take this approach with eating and drinking while we work. It may seem harmless, but one wrong move could lead to potential disaster if you are working with computers. I’ve even made a mistake and spilled liquids on my PC.
Thankfully most PCs are a bit stronger than they were before, and unless the PC has been completely submerged in liquid, most of the time, a little bit of knowledge and quick actions can prevent any lasting damage.
To salvage this situation best you can, first, you should disconnect power from the device. What damages the equipment is primarily water and electricity. The first thing you should do is remove one of those from the equation. Since getting rid of all the water takes longer, disconnecting it from power source is usually the easiest way to fix the situation. If your device has a battery, you should remove the battery too if you are able.
Next, you should try to get rid of any of the o ending fluid. Turn the equipment upside down or any way to get the fluid o it as soon as possible. The longer it is exposed to liquid, the more likely there will be damage.
Now, remove any peripheral devices from it. Mice, keyboards, speakers, and any other electronics. If it plugs into the device, it is best to keep it separated while you are trying to salvage the situation and then try to soak up any moisture you can using non-static generating cloth or other material. Only if you are confident, you should remove internal components to dry them individually.
Once this is done, leave the a ected equipment somewhere dry for it to finish drying out on its own for a few hours. Once it’s been given enough time, you can try booting it back up! Keep in mind you may need to be more thorough if you’ve spilled something like co ee or soda.
Esmeralda Baltazar is living her American dream. She is an HR manager for real estate company Atlantic Pacific, where she oversees all HR and talent acquisition functions for more than 500 employees in five states and more than 60 locations.
But it wasn't easy getting there.
In 2010, Baltazar immigrated from Mexico to Belle Glade, Fla. She didn't have much money, had no vehicle and could barely speak English. For 10 months, she failed to secure employment despite holding a degree in business administration from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
"I'd describe the transition as challenging," she said. "It was full of surprises, both good and bad."
Many immigrants have trouble landing jobs, despite their education or experience gained from their countries of origin. Federal data shows college-educated immigrants consistently have higher rates of unemployment than their native-born counterparts who received their degree in the U.S.
Immigrants face myriad barriers to employment and discrimination in the workplace due to preconceived notions held by employers.
we are here to make a living," she said. "We want the opportunity and the support."
