James Torres James Torres experienced a major shift in his career and that is what led him to his role as Director of Business Development at A|P. Prior to joining the company, he was in the banking industry for almost 12 years, then moved to South America to start a career in Business Development. He has a Business Management degree from Glendale Community College in Arizona. His favorite part about working at A|P is that every day is different which creates excitement in the workplace. His drive and inspiration come from a day-to-day schedule filled with fast moving parts and deadlines. He advises to always walk into a new role with an open mind as there is a lot to learn. When he’s not working, he loves to travel and has been blessed to see many parts of the world. Learning about different cultures and history is one of his favorite pastimes. He says, “nothing beats a good beach in the Caribbean and a glass of wine.”

How long have you been with A|P, and what do you do here? I been part of the A|P Family since November of 2017, and my role within the organization is to create engaging training experiences, help maintain our A|P University, and turn big ideas into innovative solutions to support our associates. I research, develop, design, post-edit, and analyze the Training Department programs on an ongoing basis. I am responsible for creating and implementing many initiatives at A|P and take distinct pride in every single one. How has your career grown since starting at A|P Management? From the moment I set foot in this company, both A|P and my director have supported me to transform and grow in a multidimensional way. My career path changed, and with this new aspiration to pursue an Instructional Design degree, their commitment to support and challenge me along the course has been rewarding. I even joined Toastmasters,
What is your favorite thing about working at A|P? My favorite thing about working at A|P is the opportunity to grow. Their motto of “Growing Bigger, Growing Better” is genuine. I have been rewarded personally with the chance to grow within this organization. This growth requires the persistence, passion, and perseverance of knowing you have given your best. How does the training team collaborate with other teams within the company? The training team collaboration principle would have to be “Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork.” To collaborate with other teams, we are just an email away. I firmly believe that the training team is fun, creative, and phenomenally centered within the company. We collaborate with teams, subject matter experts, leadership, and much more. Most importantly, the key ingredients of any successful training solution is its people. Are you currently working on any big projects or goals? Absolutely! Personally, I am working on completing my second pathway on Toastmasters. Professionally, I am working on acquiring the APTD Certification through the Association of Talent and Development. As a team (alongside our Systems team), we are working on providing a seamless transition of software to our communities (wish us luck!). A|P NEWSLETTER 04

Design Experts Predict These 5 Outdoor Living Trends Will Be Hot For Summer 2021 Summer vacation plans are still on pause for millions of homeowners, which means lots of people are looking for ways to turn their outdoor spaces into dreamy warm weather escapes. “People are craving the idea of taking a vacation,” says designer Sara Barney. “As a way to replace a tropical trip, homeowners have started focusing on making their outdoor living spaces feel like a destination-inspired oasis.” Read on for some of the top trends and expert advice on turning a backyard, deck or patio into a personal oasis. Durable Long-Lasting Furniture “If you’re going to be lounging around your outdoor space, you have to be comfortable and the furniture should be made to last,” says Sara Barney of Bandd Design. Barney adds that “more traditional outdoor furniture materials, like plastic, wood, and wicker aren’t built to last various weather conditions (humidity, storms, etc).” And because her clients are spending so much more time in their outdoor spaces, Barney now opts for more durable 05 JUNE 2021
materials that she knows “will last a lifetime,” like metal, aluminum or concrete. Bringing the Living Room Outside John McClain of John McClain Design believes that, as people move their lives outside for the summer, they should think about designing their outdoor spaces “the same way they decorate their indoor spaces.” Specifically, McClain notes that “area rugs, comfortable furniture, beautiful lighting, cozy blankets, and enough flat surfaces to place food and drink on are essential” for a lounge-worthy outdoor space. Comfy Seating is a Must The team at Pulp Design Studios explains that a well-designed outdoor living space “is all about comfort. It’s essential to have nice comfortable outdoor seating and heat for warmth. It’s important to have all the great elements of an indoor space, but outside.” Outdoor Planters = Decor of the Summer “Fun and stylish planters are a great way to add depth and personality to your

outdoor space,” says the team at Pulp Design Studios. And with the wide variety of looks and sizes to choose from, decorative planters are easy to customize to every space and style. Outdoor Kitchens “The lines between indoor and outdoor design are blurring more and more,” says designer John McClain. “Our clients are looking for the exact same amenities that they currently have in their indoor spaces in their outdoor spaces. Outdoor entertaining areas are being kicked up a notch! Full kitchens with every appliance and amenity possible,” are becoming increasingly popular as homeowners seeks to extend the possibilities of life outdoors.

Keeping your Storage Clean with Sergio Gordillo, Leabert Henry, and Michael Hanna In many instances, your PC's ability to process information and its speed, is directly tied to your computer’s storage space! The more files that are on the disk, the more storage that is consumed, the longer the PC takes to sift through all that memory! So how do we keep the memory as trimmed down as can be? There are a few built-in tools on Windows to ensure that any excess memory is cleaned up and kept clear. This process is easy to do and harmless to the machine. Disk Cleanup The first tool would be Disk Cleanup: it’s a tool that when run, searches through your system for excess files that are no longer needed. Anything from files left in the recycling bin to excess files left over from previous Windows updates normally placed deep within the System’s architecture that may remain there for a long time if not cleaned up.
Disk Defragmenter Without getting into too much detail about how your operating system works, you can think of it as a chef attempting to cook multiple meals with multiple stages all at the same time on a single stove. To ensure that each meal is completed without leaving the customer waiting for too long, the chef rotates what they are cooking on the stove at regular intervals. The operating system does the same when performing any tasks that the system requires to function but doing so leaves gaps in the system. Bits of processing power that it can’t properly access due to all the other work that it is doing. This is known as fragmentation and it limits how much the operating system can process the more fragmentation occurs. The Disk Defragmenter cleans all the processes and restores them to the default state allowing the operating system to freshly allocate space. It cleans the stove and clears the orders, so to speak. The Defragmenter normally runs on its own once a month, but after using Disk Cleanup it is recommended to run the defragmenter as well. Hopefully, these bits of information help keep your PC running smoothly! A|P NEWSLETTER 08
