5 Health Benefits of Spending Time in Nature People seem to know instinctively that spending time outdoors is a good thing. But, with our modern lifestyle, it’s become pretty standard to spend more time inside—away from nature.

Here are five of the health benefits for spending time outdoors in nature:

You will become more relaxed. According to the journal research, it only takes five minutes to experience the relaxing effects of nature.

Your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure will be lowered. People who spent more time in the forests had lower blood pressure, lower cortisol levels and a lower pulse than people who spent more time indoors or in the city areas. But, just being exposed to sunlight alone, can help lower your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

You are more likely to be active. If you make getting outside a goal, that should mean less time in front of the television and computer and more time walking and doing other things that put the body in motion. Research shows that people who exercise outside are more likely to stick to a future routine than those who exercised at the gym.

Here’s the thing though: spending time in nature is really important for your optimal health. More and more, scientific studies are uncovering the different health benefits from spending time outdoors.

In fact, on average, Americans spend nearly 93% of their time indoors!

b

Your concentration will improve. Going outside can have some impactful results on your brainpower. Studies show that spending time outside can improve creative thinking.

Your vitamin D levels rise. Sunlight hitting the skin begins a process that leads to the creation and activation of vitamin D. Studies suggest that just 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight exposure per day can help your body to create vitamin D that it needs to promote vitamin absorption and strengthen bones.

TECH TALK

CYBERSECURITY HISTORY: THE ADVENT OF STUXNET with Sergio Gordillo, Leabert Henry & Michael Hanna

Cyber Security is an ever-evolving creature, but a lot can be learned by looking back at some of the most infamous events in history involving cybersecurity and its potential shortcomings. Today, we’ll be talking about Stuxnet.

What is Stuxnet? Stuxnet is a Worm, which is a type of virus that specializes in exploiting security flaws in a system to steal information, install back doors, and corrupt data among many other uses. Worms are hard to deal with because they can replicate at an alarming rate. It was meticulously designed to target certain systems, and some even believe some of its incarnations were purposefully developed by multiple governments, that has since been distributed on the black market.

Why is it important? Stuxnet is one of the largest data breaches in history. Its most notorious impact being in Iran, where it got into their nuclear facilities, ruining 10% of the centrifuges at the Natanz power plant and causing thousands of computers to physically

degrade. It was estimated that over one million in damages was done by a single virus. Stuxnet also spread to multiple other countries, but its impact there was significantly smaller.

How did it manage to get into the power plant? Stuxnet was spread into the systems via USB drive, though there is conflicting information about who actually did the deed. It is said that in two instances an infected flash drive was plugged into the system and Stuxnet spread to the entire facility from there, stealing information and dealing obscene amounts of damage as it went. Stuxnet, in some incarnations, still exists today. As with all viruses, there are hackers out there trying to create the next big breach, so knowing some cyber security history can go a long way in making sure you keep yourself and your place of work safe. Also, if you see any suspicious looking flash drives, do yourself a favor! Don’t plug them into your PC. A|P NEWSLETTER 08
