What We Do A|P Community Builders collaborates with Development Team and any partners prior to starting construction to understand project goals, provide plan development and budgeting feedback, and offer value engineering options to reduce project costs. During construction, our associates are on the jobsite every day, actively involved in the field coordination and financial management. Our team members are master coordinators and work with architects, engineers, subcontractors, labor, consultants, owners, and partners to assure developments are done safely, on-time, within budget, and of the highest quality. When a property is finished, we work with A|P Management to turn it over to the proper leasing and management teams for future operations.

Why We Love It Construction is full of challenges but that is one of the many reasons we love what we do. Every day is different, and every property is unique, bringing not only new challenges but also new opportunities to learn and grow. Our field staff enjoys building relationships with the diverse group of people that come together. Our team feels like family. Most importantly, we are helping to bring much-needed housing to regions of this country that desperately need it.

Seven Memorial Day Facts You Probably Didn’t Know. How the long weekend that unofficially starts the summer came to be. Today, Memorial Day is synonymous with barbecues, and picnics—but the holiday's roots trace back far further than you might have realized. Below, a few facts about the history of Memorial Day, and how it's evolved throughout its 150-odd years. 1. Multiple cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. According to the Library of Congress, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, to be the "Birthplace of Memorial Day," referencing a celebration the town had in 1866. However, other places are known to have celebrated the holiday earlier, and exactly where the first celebration took place remains in dispute. 2. It was originally called Decoration Day. The holiday was celebrated by “decorating” the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and more, hence the name 07 MAY 2021

“Decoration Day.” Over time, it became known as Memorial Day. 3. Union General John A. Logan founded the holiday. Although people were already decorating graves of fallen Civil War soldiers in an unofficial way, General Logan codified the holiday. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he famously said. 4. Memorial Day wasn’t celebrated on the “last Monday in May” until relatively recently. When General Logan officially launched the holiday, he called for it to be observed on May 30. After the Uniform Monday

Holiday Act took effect in 1971, however, it was moved to the final Monday in May. 5. Logan may have chosen May 30 for an interesting reason. The date was selected because it wasn’t the anniversary of any battle in particular—well, according to legend, that is. 6. It’s customary for the U.S. president or vice president to give a speech. And traditionally, that speech is delivered at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, the 3rd U.S. Infantry also place American flags in front of Arlington’s over 260,000 graves and niches. 7. Originally, only soldiers who had died in the Civil War were honored. After WWI, though, the holiday began to encompass members of the American armed forces who had fallen in any conflict. Know Your Enemy - Trojans with Sergio Gordillo, Leabert Henry, and Michael Hanna First popping up in the late ’70s, Trojans have become one of the most common viruses’ to date, and in a work environment like ours, it's important to know what they are and how they work so that you can avoid them whenever possible. What is a Trojan? Named after the Greek Myth of the Trojan Horse, a Trojan virus comes disguised as another file that lures you into opening it to infect your system. In the majority of situations, a trojan can only infect your system if you open the actual file but once it is in your system, it can compromise it in moments. What do they do? They can do anything you can do. They can log your keystrokes to steal your passwords, change your system

settings, send emails from your contact list, download other viruses and even let a hacker remotely control your PC with admin access. How do I avoid them? Most Trojans are sent through emails. If you receive an unexpected email asking you to open a file, take a moment to make sure that file is what it says it is before you open it. Ask yourself: • Is the file too small? • Does it say it’s a .PDF file but it ends in .EXE or another abbreviation you don’t recognize? If you answer yes, don’t open or download the file! Send the email to IT and we’ll check it out for you. The best way to avoid a Trojan is vigilance so double-check an attachment before you open it and save yourself some trouble! A|P NEWSLETTER 12
