Creating a village: Gervin-Hawkins' long-sought development on San Antonio's East Side breaks ground The first phase of a long-awaited development spearheaded by state Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins — which would be among the largest projects on the East Side, if built out — is finally starting construction. A new developer is involved and financing has been lined up for the initial stage of the development known as Echo East: 192 apartments off of Spriggsdale Boulevard near the AT&T Center reserved for residents earning up to 60 percent of the area median income. “I’m excited, I’m honored, I’m pleased,” Gervin-Hawkins said at a ground-breaking ceremony Monday for the Villas at Echo East. “I am so glad it’s a reality.” The $43 million complex will be developed by an affiliate of Atlantic Pacific Companies, a real estate company with offices in Texas, Florida, Georgia and California. It is expected to be completed in fall 2022.
property tax exemption and about $18.2 million in tax-exempt bonds through arms of the San Antonio Housing Trust, which stepped in last winter to help move the project forward. “We are gathered here as a community with a lot of hope in our hearts,” Pete Alanis, executive director of the Housing Trust, said at the ceremony. Financing includes $750,000 from Bexar County, $425,000 from the George Gervin Youth Center, $2.55 million from the city of San Antonio’s Inner City Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone and about $18 million in tax credit equity from the state of Texas. Local politicians praised Gervin-Hawkins for persisting with the project despite years of setbacks. Activities to Try This Year What to watch, read, eat, and do. In 2021, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 and ends October 15, as it has every year since 1989. It's split across two months because September 15 is a key date in the history of several Latin American countries: It's when Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua declared their independence from Spain in 1821. Much like Black History Month in February and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for Americans who identify as Hispanic to celebrate the traditions and history unique to their cultural background. 05 SEPTEMBER 2021
Even if you don't consider yourself Hispanic, Latino, or Latinx, you can still seize the opportunity to learn more about the cultures of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries and territories honored during these four weeks. And with plenty of activities to choose from, you can have lots of fun while doing so. While much of the communal revelry was limited to virtual events in 2020 amid the pandemic, more communities will likely throw a proper fiesta in 2021. Whether you're gearing up to celebrate with friends and family or you prefer to keep it low-key this year, here are 12 festive Hispanic Heritage Month activities to try.
A|P NEWSLETTER 06
1) Enjoy a classic Latin American dish. There are so many national and regional foods to choose from. Try a Venezuelan arepa, or get a taste of El Salvador with a warm and chewy filled pupusa. There's the complex flavors of mole poblano traditional to Puebla, Mexico, the seafood paella of Spain, fresh Peruvian lime-cured ceviche... anybody else hungry? 2) Support a Hispanic or Latino-owned business. Looking for gorgeous jewelry, your new favorite makeup, and haircare for curly girls? These Latina-owned businesses have got you covered. And any time is a great time to invest in your community by shopping local! 3) Take a dance class. Mambo, rumba, cha-cha, or flamenco-dance your way into Hispanic Heritage Month. Learning some new moves is an energizing way to exercise (it's a fun date night activity, too). 4) Play a game of lotería or dominoes. Everyone loves a game night. Gather around the table for a round of lotería, a Mexican bingo game known for its colorful cards, which has long held a powerful nostalgic meaning within Latinx and Hispanic communities. Dominoes are another popular pastime for many of Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican heritage in particular.
5) Make a playlist of Hispanic artists. Or, given the wealth of talent across genres, several playlists. Pop hits from Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello, Rosalia, J Balvin, and Ricky Martin are perfect for your workout mix, for example. Dive into Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you listen to round up some of your favorites and discover acts you've never heard before—feel free to draw inspiration from our roundup of Marc Anthony, Bad Bunny, and Selena songs, too. 6) Binge a Spanish-language TV show. May we suggest starting with Elite, or 4 seasons (soon to be 5) of La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)? 7) Visit a museum highlighting Hispanic and Latino culture. There are oases of eye-pleasing culture across the United States: Chicago boasts the National Museum of Mexican Art and the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, while you'll find the Smithsonian's Latino Center in Washington, D.C. Many sites also offer online exhibitions as well as events that showcase less-explored aspects of the Latino diaspora, such as this streaming Smithsonian talk on "the tangible connections between baseball and Latino culinary traditions." 8) Listen to some Spanish and Latino podcasts. Podcasts are a great way to entertain yourself and learn something on the go. A|P NEWSLETTER 06

Some even present an opportunity to brush up on your language skills, such as News in Slow Spanish. Latinx Therapy, hosted by therapist Adriana Alejandre, offers mental health tips that center on Latinx communities. And WBUR's Anything for Selena, available in both English and Spanish, explores the legacy, life, and death of Selena Quintanilla. 9) Learn about Mexican Independence Day. Nope, not Cinco de Mayo—that's a completely different holiday. Mexican Independence Day is September 16. It's the date marking the day in 1810 when a Roman Catholic priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla delivered a rallying speech that's considered the first formal declaration of Mexico's independence from Spain. 10) Read books by Hispanic and Latinx authors. Whether you prefer fiction or memoir, immersing yourself in the lived experience of another person is a great way to gain fresh perspectives. 11) Hold your own Spanish-language film fest. Dig into the films of Pedro Almodovar, Guillermo del Toro, and more celebrated Hispanic filmmakers who've made movies in their native language.
12) Make paletas. Hispanic Heritage Month may arrive in the last week of summer, but we'd argue that paletas should be a year-round treat. The Mexican popsicles are simple to make; the basic main ingredients are water, sugar, lime juice, and fresh fruit. But flavor combinations abound—add chili, cream, chocolate, and whatever fruit combos you can dream up and turn your own home into a paletería.

STOPCODES with Sergio Gordillo, Leabert Henry, and Michael Hanna The dreaded Blue Screen of Death! Since personal computers became a household occurrence with the advent of Windows 95 and 98, the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) has become one of the most well recognized messengers of doom for the average PC user; a notice that something has gone terribly wrong. In those times, it was a symptom of any one of dozens of potential issues; anything from heating to driver errors could cause it. You would simply have to reboot the PC and investigate. However, with the advent of newer operating systems, the most recent being Windows 10, Microsoft introduced Stopcodes to make navigating these errors easier.
What is a Stopcode? A Stopcode is an error code that the PC will present to you to give a direct alert to what specifically caused this error, and even a QR code that will serve as a link to Microsoft’s own database about the error you encountered. So what do I do if I get a BSOD? Don’t fret! Though the stigmas tell you that something is terribly wrong, it’s usually something that can be fixed. Pay attention to the stopcode it gives you right next to the QR Code and write that down! Depending on the stopcode and what you were doing at the moment the error happened, it can be easy to track down the issue yourself or provide to your IT Professional so they can discern the problem.
