Asia Pacific International School Athletic Manual The mission of Asia Pacific International School is to provide all of its students with enjoyable athletic experiences, opportunity to develop athletic and life skills, and experience success through knowledgeable instruction and positive role models.
Philosophy To provide Elementary School, Middle School, and High School students with enjoyable experiences, the opportunity to develop athletic and life skills, and experience success through knowledgeable instruction and positive role models. ●
Enjoyable Experiences: The emphasis is on enhancing student self-esteem and increasing their interest and ability in sports.

Opportunity to participate in leagues and Jamborees: Middle School participants will have the opportunity to play against teams from other schools in the MS KAIAC Community. High School participants will have the opportunity to participate in tournaments and leagues against teams from other schools.
●
Develop Skills: Participants will be taught personal commitment, fundamental skills, life skills, team work, sportsmanship and a sense of fair play.

Experience Success: Middle School participants will be placed on teams where their ability levels and grade levels are evenly mixed. (There will be no stacking of the teams.) Participants will experience the benefits of being part of a team. High School participants will be allowed to try out for varsity teams to play in a competitive sports program. Participants will experience the benefits of being part of a team.

Knowledgeable Instruction: The coaches will have a basic understanding of the Middle School jamboree philosophy and will work with athletes to improve their athletic and teamwork skills. The coaches will have basic understanding of the High School competitive league and tournament formats and will work with athletes to improve their athletic and teamwork skills.

Positive Role Model: The athletes will be guided in the personal disciplines of playing team and individual sports. The coaches will motivate participants to give their best effort no matter the outcome. The coaches will exemplify the highest sportsmanship behavior at all times.
General A.P.I.S. Guidelines ●
Participants will have the opportunity to play against teams from other schools in the MS KAIAC and HS KAIAC. Elementary students will have the opportunity to play on teams against other students from APIS.

In line with the MS Philosophy, all MS sports are held in a jamboree format. Middle School Jamboree philosophy applies to all sports. All, HS sports will be in KAIAC varsity leagues and tournaments.

The purpose of the jamboree format is to provide students with the opportunity to put into practice all the skills they are learning. The purpose of APIS Elementary and Secondary leagues is to provide students in the secondary grades with the opportunity to put into practice all the skills they are learning.
Behavioral Expectations APIS insists on a positive school and extra-curricular activities climate where all students have the right to learn. Students must understand and respect: ● School community agreements ● Rights of the coaches and supervisors ● other participant’s right to participate and be free from bullying and harassment ● Individual differences and the diversity of our cultures ● Student participants from other international schools ● Sportsmanship and cooperation with all competitors. ● Students must adhere to KAIAC rules and regulations ● All students who wear glasses must NOW wear sports goggles or contacts instead of glasses. ● Any student, who quits a team, for reasons that are determined by the Athletic Director as invalid, will not be permitted to join any sports team for the next two sports seasons. There are 3 seasons in a year, Fall, Winter, Spring, ● Make a full commitment to the activity and have no tardiness or absences except for valid reasons. If the participant will need to miss a practice or a game, she/he will need to give advance notice, in the form of a note signed by a parent or guardian to the coach prior to the event. Unexcused absences and lateness can lead to benching during games based on the coach’s decisions. A full schedule will be provided to the participant and parent/guardian to help eliminate this issue. ● Foul language and swearing is strictly prohibited. Any player or manager caught swearing in practice or during a game can and will be subject to disciplinary actions ranging from loss of playing time, and up to and including game suspensions and expulsion from the team. In addition to this the player can be brought to the secondary principal for further disciplinary actions if need be.
All students are expected to maintain high behavior standards where self-discipline is practiced as a norm. This behavior applies to both to the APIS community and other international school communities regardless of whether or not an adult is present. T his includes the appropriate behavior expectations during game play, on the bus travelling to games, practices, and any team function as listed in each school division.
Disciplinary Actions Warning: For minor discipline issues, coaches should give verbal warnings to students. If the supervisor feels it necessary, they may fill out a discipline referral and report the student to the office. The Principal will conference with the student and review the discipline policy. Benching: Coaches may bench or limit playing time of a participant in games in the case of repeated minor discipline issues such as unsportsmanlike conduct, a major offense, or if there are school related problems such as grades or behavior issues. Benching may be enforced for not showing up to practices without advanced notice or a valid reason note signed by a parent/guardian. Suspension/expulsion: In the case of major offenses, the coach, Athletic Director and Principal can suspend the student from the sports activity for a determined period of time. In addition to this, these guidelines correspond with those in the student manual, and students are required to follow the same guidelines during extra-curricular activities. Student’s are subject to the same disciplinary actions found in the student handbook and can be brought to the principal for major behavior offenses.
Chaperone Guidelines Coaches may request that parents attend away games to assist as chaperones. Following are guidelines for parents when they chaperone: ● ● ● ●
Since away games involve a large group of children, always try to think in terms of “What if every child did this?” Insist on respectful, responsible, and safe behavior at all times. It is easy for grown-ups to socialize and forget that they are the most helpful when they help supervise the students and reinforce expectations. The trip is far more enjoyable if the adults share the job of setting limits as needed. If a particular child does not respond to parent requests, the parent should inform the coach. There if often a tendency for a parent to hover around his/her own child. Parent chaperones are the most helpful when you assist with all the students and not just their own child.
Transportation Guidelines ●

Students will be responsible to find their own method of transportation home after practice and games of their extra-curricular activity from APIS. APIS will not be responsible for providing transportation for participants in athletics program to their homes. APIS will provide transportation to all extracurricular games with other international schools leaving from APIS and returning to APIS. ○ Transportation will leave from APIS to the specific international school and back to APIS. ○ Students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from APIS, in order to ride the team bus departing and arriving for games. ○ Students will be provided with a schedule of dates for games ahead of time.
Medical Emergencies and Procedures The following procedures will be followed in the event a student becomes seriously ill or injured during practice or at games: A. The school will ensure the Medical Authorization Form is complete for each student participating in the sports activity. B. A copy of each student's Emergency Medical Authorization Form is to be in the possession of the coach. C. If it becomes necessary to take a student to a hospital for emergency treatment: 1. Coach will contact the nearest hospital or law enforcement agency for assistance getting the student to the hospital. The school will contact the parent/guardian and give all necessary information. Ensure the name, location, and telephone of the medical facility receiving the injured student is communicated to the parent/guardian. The coach will remain at the medical facility with the student until a parent or guardian arrives. 2. Using the student's Medical Authorization Form, coach will contact the parent/guardian and provide all necessary information. The coach will attempt to contact the principal and provide all facts and stay with the ill/injured student until the parent/guardian arrives at the medical facility. 3. The coach will complete a written incident report at school as soon as possible.
APIS High School League (KAIAC) ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

For this academic year APIS will form Varsity sports teams in the sports of Volleyball, Basketball, and Soccer. For this academic year, grade 7 students will not be allowed to participate in the APIS Secondary sports leagues. High School students will not be permitted to participate in middle school jamborees. When necessary students will have to try out for a perspective varsity team if there are too many wanting to participate. The determination for whether a try out shall take place will be the decision of the coach for the perspective team. Participants will have the opportunity to play against teams from other schools in the HS KAIAC. APIS will stay in line with KAIAC HS Philosophy; all HS sports are competitive leagues and tournaments. The purpose of the HS league is to provide students with the opportunity to put into practice all the skills they are learning and be in a competitive situation against peers from other international schools. Due to safety and facility restrictions in agreement amongst HS KAIAC community, the formats may vary. Equal playing will not be enforced. These teams are competitive teams and the ultimate goal for these teams is to work together to win and learn. That being said, having all members receive playing will be the goal of the coach when possible in League and tournament play. For friendly games all members of the team will receive playing time. Teams must be composed of the highest skilled players from the grades of 8 to 12 as determined by the coach. Grade 7 students will be allowed to participate on the High School team if there are not enough participants in the grades of 8 through 12. All schools should submit base access rosters to SAMS and Osan at least two weeks prior to commencement of each season. It is best to include all middle school students, teachers, high school coaches, parents and bus drivers.

Adult coaches should be assigned to each team for supervision. Ejection – any player can be ejected from a game for poor sportsmanship, showing flagrant disrespect for the officials and repeated violations or reckless play. No jewelry/accessories at any time.
Student Eligibility: Students are considered to be eligible if she/he: ● In order to be part of an APIS activity, you and your parents agree to follow the conditions listed below: ○ A student-athlete must maintain a minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average ( G.P.A.) from the previous quarter with no “F” to be eligible to participate interscholastically. ○ Students, who fail to meet this academic standing, will not be allowed to participate in league games. ○ Students who are not meeting academic standards at progress reports will receive disciplinary actions from the athletic director (on a case by case basis) up to and including game suspensions and removal from the team/club until the next quarter report cards reflect your G.P.A. is 2.5 or above and are passing all classes. ■ Students who are failing 1 subject or not meeting GPA standards above 2.0 at mid- quarter will be allowed to participate on a modified practice schedule but are suspended from games until they are passing the class in question and or their GPA is meeting APIS standards. ■ Students failing multiple subjects, or have extremely low GPA’s below 1.75 at mid- quarter will be immediately removed from the team/club until they are passing the classes in question and or their GPA is meeting APIS standards. ● ● ●

Is judged fit to play by his/her coach and principal. Has passed a regular physical exam in the last 12 months. Students must be signed into school in order to participate in games and events. ○ Physical Examination and Medical History Requirements All newly enrolled students are required to have a physical examination and medical history taken, with results on file in the administrative office prior to student’s first day of enrollment. Physical examination must be repeated every year, signed and dated by the attending physician. New student’s medical examination must have been taken within six months of student’s first enrollment day at APIS. Medical history will be provided directly by the parent using APIS’s standard Medical History Form. Has not lost amateur athletic standing in the sport in which he/she is competing. st On the 1 day of September, has not reached the age of 19. Has not graduated from a U.S. or International 4 year high school. If a special-needs student’s grade falls below a 2.0 grade point average, the schools administrator, upon referral from the coach or athletic director, shall review his/her case and make a final determination for eligibility. Special-needs students are those who qualify for an IEP, ESL ILP and/or EFL program. Athletes with a changed eligibility will gain/lose that eligibility on the first day of the ensuing quarter.
Coaches Code of Conduct Contract All coach must agree to the following contract: Behavior/conduct of coaches will be maintained at the highest level. As a HS APIS coach I agree to: ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
Treat competitors, athletes, officials, and fans with courtesy and respect. Continually strive to help the athletes improve, both in the classroom and in the athletic arena. Represent our team and school in a positive and responsible manner. Model and exhibit the principles of good sportsmanship in all contests and practices. Cooperate with my athletes, other coaches, and opponents. I understand that without them we would not have a game. Remember that the goals of the game are to have fun, improve the athlete’s skills, and feel good. I will not show off or try to get the most points. Coach for the “fun of it,” and the love of the sport.
Coaches who are unable to follow these standards will not be allowed to participate.

APIS TEAM UNIFORM AGREEMENT 1. It is the responsibility of the Athletic Director to distribute and collect uniforms at the beginning and at the end of the season.
2. It is the responsibility of the student to clean and take care of the uniform during the athletic season. Students are to return the uniform on the last day of competition to the Athletic Director. Failure to do so will result in a penalty fee. 3. Late requests for uniforms or equipment may not be guaranteed.
4. Team uniforms on loan to students are not to be worn at any time other than during interscholastic competitions or unless instructed to do so by the coach. Coaches are expected to enforce this regulation.
5. All student athletes who make a varsity or junior varsity teams will be required to sign a uniform rental sheet, and pay a non refundable Uniform Rental Fee prior to participating on the team. The Uniform rental form must be signed by students and their guardians, and a non refundable Uniform rental payment must be made to the school for the student to receive the athletic uniform. If the Uniform rental form and fees are not completed at the start of the season the student will not be allowed to participate on the athletic team until he or she completes the form and pays the non refundable uniform rental fee.
6. Students who make a varsity team or junior varsity team, but are later taken off the team prior to the completion of the season will not be refunded the uniform rental fee, no matter the reason.
7. Students who lose, their uniform, do not return the uniform, and or destroy the integrity of the athletic uniform where it is no longer usable for athletic competition, will be required to pay a penalty fee to recoup the cost to purchase a new uniform for that sport. The penalty fee will be 180,000 won.
8. The uniform rental fee will be the following amounts for each sport: Volleyball: 40,000 won Soccer: 75,000 won Basketball: 75,000 won
9. The athletic director will notify students prior to the end of the season if a uniform is being retired. In order for students to keep the rental uniform students must pay the purchase fee, or the uniform will be collected by the athletic director on the last day of competition for that athletic season.
