New to WYCC PBS Chicago in January, DCI Banks is the TV equivalent of perfect cold weather comfort food—richly satisfying fare with a real kick—that will have viewers wanting more.

D

etective Chief Inspector Alan Banks comes to American television as the character at the center of DCI Banks (Tuesdays at 8 p.m. starting January 8), an edge-of-your-seat television series adapted from novels by Peter Robinson, one of the premier masters of modern British crime. His character Banks is a perceptive and shrewd policeman who moved to the Yorkshire Dales from London to escape the stress of city life. Yet in the fictional town of Eastvale, with its cobbled market square, he finds more action than he could have ever imagined. As in the Inspector Banks novels, each of the series’ episodes draws on Robinson’s well-constructed plotlines and skill in creating memorable characters. Acclaimed British actor Stephen Tompkinson, who plays Banks in the series, will be fondly remembered by many WYCC viewers from the series Ballykissangel (see page 5, top). As for his latest role, “Banks is brooding and melancholic with more than his fair share of baggage,” says Sally Haynes, Controller of Drama at the British TV network ITV, which commissioned the new series. “Stephen is a really versatile actor and it’s great to see him in a darker role.” Aftermath Tuesday, January 8 at 8 p.m. That “darker role” comes quickly to light in the two-hour opener, which draws Banks to a grisly crime scene at the home of a serial rapist and murderer where four women are found dead. The killer’s identity is revealed, but his capture is only the beginning of a shocking investigation that will test DCI Alan Banks to the absolute limit. Working alongside Banks for the first time is ambitious and pretty Detective Sergeant Annie Cabbot, a hard-working addition to his team. Playing with Fire Tuesday, January 15 at 8 p.m. Two bodies are found after a fire on some narrow boats. Police suspect arson, and the discovery of a forged Turner landscape leads DCI Banks and DS Cabbot to connect the victims to an art forgery scam.

4 u wycc.org

Why DCI Banks Looks Familiar He’s likely to gain new WYCC fans as Alan Banks, but long before he took on that persona, Stephen Tompkinson was a viewer favorite as Father Peter Clifford in Ballykissangel. Tompkinson starred as the good-natured young English Roman Catholic priest from Manchester assigned to a church in a rural Irish community, where he had to deal with the day-to-day problems of his parishioners and his at-times hateful superior, Father MacAnally. Widely regarded as one of the best British primetime series ever shown in the UK, Ballykissangel ran for six seasons, the first three of which featured Tompinkson’s Father Peter.

Friend of the Devil Tuesday, January 22 at 8 p.m. A young student is attacked in the middle of a city, and in another part of Yorkshire a woman has her throat cut, but the two different murders have disturbing similarities. Cold Is the Grave Tuesday, January 29 at 8 p.m. Banks takes on a case terrifyingly close to home when asked by his boss, Superintendant Gerry Rydell, to find his missing teenage daughter. She is found, returns to her parents, and goes missing again, only to turn up again—dead. As investigations point to a connection with other murders, Banks and Cabbot come to suspect one of their team to be implicated in a criminal conspiracy.

DCI Alan Banks (Stephen Tompkinson) and his team

The series continues on in February with Strange Affair, where Banks gets a telephone call from his estranged brother, Roy, asking for help. Banks rushes off to Harrogate to find Roy, only to uncover complications in his brother’s personal and professional lives. When his brother is found murdered, Banks clashes with colleagues who reason that he is too close to the case to lead the investigation. In Dry Bones that Dream, Banks and DI Morton investigate the murder of a chartered accountant who has been leading a double life. The detectives uncover a link to a money-laundering racket, leading to a conflict with an ongoing fraud investigation. The series then concludes with Innocent Graves, which finds a schoolgirl murdered, and possibly raped. A local theatre director implicates himself by giving a false statement, and when forensic evidence links him to the murder scene, Banks is convinced he has his man—or does he?

International Man of Mystery Author Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and now divides his time between Richmond (in North Yorkshire) and Toronto. There are 20 books in his bestselling Inspector Banks series. The critically acclaimed crime novels have won numerous awards in Britain, the United States, Canada, and Europe, and are published in translation all over the world. “The Inspector Banks Mysteries are incredibly popular with crime thriller readers across the globe,” comments ITV Executive Producer Francis Hopkinson. “It’s very important that DCI Banks does justice to Peter’s reputation for writing and creating absorbing characters and intriguing plotlines.” And “justice” is done, indeed, in more ways than one.
