Holiday Programming Get into the holiday spirit with a full day of Christmas music and performances. ‘Tis the season to enjoy your favorite holiday tunes and stories. On December 24 from 3 p.m. to midnight, WYCC PBS Chicago has a full lineup of Christmas concerts and other holiday-related programs to bring more warmth to your winter.
A Christmas Carol: The Concert
Handel’s Messiah: A United States Naval Academy Tradition
This special musical adaptation celebrates classic storytelling and ensemble performances that provide audiences with both the comforts of a classic tale and the thrill of seeing and hearing it told like never before.
Christmas on the Danube
This three-part performance is one of the greatest choral works in Western music. It is an English-language large musical composition for orchestra, choir, and soloists that reflects on Jesus Christ as the Messiah.
Getting to the Nutcracker
This concert event features an array of Christmas classics, including “White Christmas,” “The Christmas Song,” and a very special rendition of “O Holy Night.” It features world-famous musical talent from Northern Ireland.
Christmas with Wartburg
This concert is a tradition for the entire University of St. Thomas community to celebrate the seasons of Advent and Christmas, while enjoying the amazing talents showcased by student ensembles on a world-class stage.
A Bucknell Candlelight Christmas
Filmed at the historic Symphony Hall in Boston, the show features several special segments, including a reading of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” with musical accompaniment and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus.
Eamonn McCrystal: The Music of Christmas
This true holiday treat will fill your senses with warmth, touch your heart, and provide your mind with geography and history. Travel down the Danube during the Christmas season to explore the culture of Europe.
St. Thomas Christmas: Jubilant Light 2015
Boys and girls ages 3–18 are profiled as they prepare for this holiday ballet. Viewers follow the young dancers through the auditions, the rigorous hours of training and rehearsals, and the joy of landing a principal role. Filmed on the college campus in Waverly, Iowa, this performance is a delightful way to enjoy the holiday season. It is packed with talent and wrapped in warmth and tradition. Several choirs and ensembles participate. This holiday special highlights the uplifting power of congregational singing, with performances of sacred music and familiar carols such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Silent Night,” and “Joy to the World.” Christmas on

stationbreak Cooking for Family and Friends The holiday season is often filled with good meals being shared by family and friends. WYCC PBS Chicago airs a variety of cooking programs on weekday afternoons so you can learn new recipes, as well as cooking tips and tricks. Eat! Drink! Italy! with Vic Rallo (airing Mondays at 3 p.m.) celebrates Italy’s authentic food, people, history, wine, and culture. Viewers can also learn about Italian ingredients and techniques. Taste This!, airing Mondays at 3:30 p.m., is hosted by Chef Joe Ciminera. He was trained in Milan, Italy, and has worked with many famous Italian chefs. This show started in 2002 and is Vic Rallo one of the longest-running cooking shows on American TV. A group of accomplished and up-and-coming chefs from 18 states compete against each other in The Great American Seafood Cook-Off VII (airing Wednesday, December 21 at 3:30 p.m.). Their dish must feature domestic seafood native to their home state. Travel to Norway’s rugged coastlines, majestic mountains, and picturesque towns during New Scandinavian Cooking, airing Fridays at 3 p.m. Host Andreas Viestad creates tantalizing recipes featuring locally sourced vegetables and game. Pope John Paul II
Pope John Paul II was born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Wadowice, Poland, on May 18, 1920. He began his studies at a seminary in Krakow in 1942 and was ordained as a priest in 1946. He earned a doctorate in theology in 1948 while he was living in Rome. As Father Wojtyła, he worked as a university chaplain in Poland. He was appointed the auxiliary bishop of Krakow by Pope Pius XII in 1958. Pope Paul VI appointed him as Archbishop and then as Cardinal in 1967. Pope John Paul II was elected pope on October 16, 1978. He wrote five books and celebrated 147 beatifications. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 in Saint Peter’s Square. More than 17.6 million people attended his Wednesday General Audiences while he was pope. Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at the Vatican. He is buried in the crypt of Saint Peter’s Basilica. WYCC PBS Chicago is airing two programs that feature Pope John Paul II this month: Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Communism (airing Sunday, December 11 at 10 p.m.) and A Celebration of Peace Through Music (airing Sunday, December 25 at 8 p.m.).
