Walt Disney Discover the man behind the magic and how he made his dreams become reality. Walt Disney is one of the most iconic Americans of the last century. His movies have been enjoyed by children and adults for generations; his theme parks are visited by tens of millions of people every year; and his beloved characters connect with audiences over and over again. Disney is a brand known throughout the world, but the man who created the brand is less familiar. American Experience: Walt Disney offers an unprecedented look at the life and legacy of this iconic figure. The two-part documentary features interviews with artists who worked at the studio, as well as authors and academics who have studied Disney. The creative genius behind feel-good underdog stories considered himself an underdog as well. In addition to his passion for art and storytelling, Walt also wanted to ensure that his legacy would remain—and it certainly has.

ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with

Annabel Langbein

New Zealand celebrity cook Annabel Langbein believes that preparing and sharing simple yet delicious foods is the key to a good life. Her love for promoting organic food and preparing and eating homegrown meals has earned her quite the international following over the past 20 years. Langbein’s parents played a major role in developing her passion for gardening and cooking. Her father, Fred, was a vegetable gardener and beekeeper and her mother, Anne, was a cook and home science university graduate. Langbein was only 16 years old when she decided to leave home and live an alternative lifestyle that consisted of growing vegetables, cooking over a fire, and living off the land. For the next several years, Langbein spent her time hunting and fishing for much of her own food, and she also used this time to hone her skills through trial and error. Aside from courses at the Culinary Institute of America in New York later in her career, Langbein never formally learned to cook. She did, however, study horticulture at Lincoln University in New Zealand because she believed the ability to understand how plants grow is incredibly useful when it comes to cooking. Langbein is an award-winning food writer with more than 20 cookbooks that have won numerous awards, been translated into several languages, and sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. The video is accompanied by questions for educators to ask themselves: • Which of the shifts is modeled in this video? • What would it take to be able to conduct a conversation such as this with students? What tools, resources, support, and preparation would a teacher require? • What would this look like at the elementary level with an elementary text? • What is it about this reading that is different from my own past/present practice? This resource is part of the Common Core Video Series collection.
