rom the beginning of the slave trade in Africa to the United States’ first black president, Harvard scholar and professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. follows the evolution of African Americans. Through visits to historic sites, debates with historians, and interviews with eyewitnesses of important civil rights moments, The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross paints a full picture. The name for the six-part series comes from the idea that “the road to freedom for black people in America was not linear, but more like the course of a river, full of loops and eddies, slowing, and occasionally reversing the current of progress.”
THE BLACK ATLANTIC (1500–1800) Sunday, February 5 at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Within a century, the Trans-Atlantic slave trade became a vast empire connecting three continents. Trace the emergence of plantation slavery in America and examine what the Era of Revolutions—American, French, and Haitian—would mean for African Americans, and for slavery in America.

MAKING A WAY OUT OF NO WAY (1897–1940) Monday, February 6 at 7 p.m. Friday, February 10 at 7 p.m. The Jim Crow era was when African Americans struggled to build their own worlds within the harsh, narrow confines of segregation. Successful black institutions were always at risk. At the same time, the ascendance of black arts and culture showed that a community with a strong identity was taking hold.
THE AGE OF SLAVERY (1800–1860) Sunday, February 5 at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, February 9 at 9:30 p.m. As slavery intensified, so did resistance. From individual acts to mass rebellions, African Americans demonstrated their determination to undermine and ultimately eradicate slavery in every state in the nation. Courageous individuals forced the issue of slavery to the forefront of national politics.
RISE! (1940–1968) Monday, February 6 at 8:30 p.m. Friday, February 10 at 8:30 p.m. Beginning in World War II, African Americans who helped fight fascism abroad came home to face the same old racial violence. But this time, mass media—from print to radio and TV—broadcast that injustice to the world, planting seeds of resistance. By 1968, a new call for “Black Power” was unleashed.
INTO THE FIRE (1861–1896) Sunday, February 5 at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, February 9 at 10:30 p.m. African Americans were agents of their own liberation. After Emancipation, they sought to realize the promise of freedom—rebuilding families shattered by slavery. They demanded economic, political, and civil rights. Shortly after, an intransigent South mounted a swift and vicious reign of terror.
A MORE PERFECT UNION (1968–2013) Monday, February 6 at 9:30 p.m. Friday, February 10 at 9:30 p.m. African Americans set out to build a bright new future on the foundation of the civil rights movement’s victories. They came together to support Illinois Senator Barack Obama in his historic presidential campaign. When he won in 2008, many hoped that America had finally transcended race and racism.

The government, different organizations, and individuals around the country come together to pay tribute to African Americans of the past and present who have had an impact on the United States. WYCC PBS Chicago is airing programs on some of these noteworthy individuals. By combining historical context with a look at the current generation coming through the ranks, Black Women in Medicine (airing Sunday, February 12 at 8 p.m.) chronicles stories of excellence and perseverance that engage, encourage, and motivate, planting seeds of aspiration in the minds of future doctors. An Evening with Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee, airing Monday, February 20 at 8 p.m., provides a historical look into the life of this legendary couple. The two are interviewed by educator and activist Angela Davis. The Queen of Swing, airing Monday, February 20 at 9 p.m., examines the now-97-year-old entertainer Norma Miller’s influence in the globalization of America’s jazz culture

AFRICANA STUDIES 101 – Introduction to African-American Studies Survey of African American Studies from an interdisciplinary perspective; embraces five basic categories of the African American Studies program. AFRICANA STUDIES 214 – AfroPoP: The Ultimate Hip Hop: Culture and Politics Cultural Exchange The political significance, globalization, and history of hip hop. The materials/social culture that has come to be associated with hip hop will be the primary focus. HISTORY 114 – The Afro-American in American History Explores the role of the Afro-American in American culture and the historical traditions which give rise to current dilemmas confronting the American community. LITERATURE 137 – The Black Woman in Black Fiction Exploration of images of the African American woman in novels and short stories through lectures, discussion, and optional out-of-class group sessions. ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Eric Holder
Eric H. Holder, Jr., was born on January 21, 1951, in the Bronx, New York. He grew up in New York and attended Columbia University both for his undergraduate degree and his law degree. After he graduated from law school in 1976, he moved to Washington, D.C., and began working for the Department of Justice. President Ronald Reagan nominated Holder to be Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in 1988. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Holder as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Several years later, Clinton named him Deputy Attorney General. Holder was the first African American to hold this position. Holder then became the first African American Attorney General on February 3, 2009, after President Barack Obama nominated him. Holder was Attorney General until 2015. He is now a partner at the law firm of Covington and Burling, LLP. Program: Polar Bear: Spy on the Ice Focus: Animal Adaptations, Climate Change Grades: 6–12 Airing: Monday, February 27 at 8 p.m. Overview: Cameras are just a breath away when two sets of cubs emerge from winter maternity dens. They also capture the moment when the sea ice breaks away from the island in the spring. The cameras continue to follow the bears as they hunt, dive, and court each other. Free Additional Resources: The film’s website has details about their filmmaking process, particularly the cameras used. Students might be interested in choosing one of the cameras, and think of another use for it. This might be written as an essay or, depending on your resources, filmed and presented to the class. In this media-rich lesson, students explore the role that ice plays on Earth, the factors causing it to melt, and the local and global consequences of melting ice. This resource is part of the Polar Sciences Collection.

The program also shows viewers that math can be used in real life to solve everyday problems. Each episode has mystery, humor, and action that helps viewers understand math concepts.
Welcome to the Neighborhood Sesame Street (airing weekdays at 9:30 a.m. and Sundays at 6 a.m.) is where multiethnic, multigenerational, and even multispecies residents coexist in harmony. This program shows children that everyone brings a special ability to the community. Viewers learn to use their imaginations, build social skills, and respect people’s differences.
