rokenwood, New Zealand, is a small town— and getting smaller, due to the mysterious murders that keep happening. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that there are a variety of landscapes and a variety of people all within a short range. From farmlands to mountains to seashores, this area is home to hippies, treehuggers, retirees, bikers, and more.
The Brokenwood Mysteries follows the story of the town’s newest resident, Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd, as he quickly learns that murder can happen in the unlikeliest of settings. Shepherd and his partner Detective Constable Kristin Sims try to solve a new murder case in each episode.

ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Agatha Christie
Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born on September 15, 1890, in Devon, England. She was mostly homeschooled by her American father, but she taught herself to read when she was just five years old. Growing up, she spent time in both France and Egypt. She started writing and publishing short stories when she was 18. In 1912, she met Archie Chistie and, though neither of them had much money, they eventually married on Christmas Eve of 1914. Christie began to write detective stories during World War I. Although her most famous character, Hercule Poirot, is not based on anyone in particular, Christie had become familiar with Belgian refugees living in the English countryside and felt that a former Belgian policeman would make a great detective for her first book, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Christie and her husband had one daughter, Rosalind, in 1919. In 1928, the two divorced and Christie lived with Rosalind. Later that year, Christie met archaeologist Max Mallowan while traveling on the Orient Express and the two married on September 11, 1930. Christie wrote two or three books a year for several years after they married. Some of them were written under the pen name Mary Westmacott. Many of her books have become detective classics, beloved by generations of readers. Christie passed away on January 12, 1976. WYCC PBS Chicago viewers can see Christie’s stories brought to life in Agatha Christie’s Poirot on Saturday, March 26 as part of the Spring Mystery Marathon.
