1916: THE IRISH REBELLION ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE AND EXPERT INTERVIEWS BRING A HISTORIC MOMENT BACK TO LIFE.
D
uring Easter of 1916, a small group of poorly armed Irish rebels took on the might of the British Empire in Dublin. The rebels were defeated militarily, but their fight led to changes in Ireland and was later seen as a moral victory. Men and women both stood up for what they believed in.
Actor Liam Neeson, who was born in Northern Ireland, narrates the threepart documentary 1916: The Irish Rebellion. Images from the day of the event are paired with new segments filmed around the world. Leading international experts share their thoughts on what unfolded. The documentary also explores the role Irish Americans played in the lead-up to the rebellion.

The first episode traces events in Ireland and abroad leading to the preparation for the Rising. There were many contributing factors: the rise of cultural nationalism, the reemergence of the separatist physical force tradition, the contested traditions of nationalism and unionism, the rise of organized labor, the role of women, the role of Irish America, and the influence of the diaspora and international political movements.

Watch the Rising unfold. The Irish Republican Brotherhood infiltrated the Irish Volunteer Movement. The separatists attempted to secure assistance from Germany, Britain’s enemy. Roger Casement was arrested. The order and countermand for a call up of the Irish Volunteers on Easter Sunday caused confusion. British Intelligence was aware of what was planned, but lacked the readiness to tackle what happened on Easter Monday.
Get a closer look at the details of the aftermath and response to the Rising in Ireland and abroad. The initial reaction of many Dubliners to the Rising gave way to a grudging respect that grew exponentially with the British response. Although the rebellion itself was a failure, it created the conditions for a national revolution and changed the course of Irish history. It also inspired countless freedom struggles throughout the world.

stationbreak Celebrating Women’s History Month March is Women’s History Month, and WYCC PBS Chicago is celebrating with programs featuring women from a variety of time periods and fields. Learn about female doctors, pilots, politicians, actresses, and more who paved a path for themselves and generations of women to follow. Penny: Champion of the Marginalized (airing Sunday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m.) tells the story of Penny Cooper in her own words. The talented lawyer and art enthusiast offers a unique perspective on important social narratives such as criminal justice and gender equality. Meet renowned academic and research scientist Dr. Marian Diamond during My Love Affair with the Brain: The Life & Science of Dr. Marian Diamond, airing Sunday, March 5 at 7 p.m. Her groundbreaking work is all the more remarkable because it began during an era when so few women entered science at all. Highly skilled women endured decades of sexism, racism, and diminished opportunities to succeed in a field that seldom welcomed them. Girls in the Band (airing Saturday,
March 11 at 6 p.m.) relays the stories of these female jazz artists. Extraordinary Women, airing Sundays at 7 p.m. starting March 12, profiles the pioneers who showed that a woman Beyond the Powder could be the equal of any man. But behind the public success, there was often private heartache and personal tragedy. Follow the female pilots of the 2014 Air Race Classic as they make their way across the country, and also hear the story of the first women’s cross-country air race of 1929, in Beyond the Powder: The Legacy of the First Women’s Cross-Country Air Race (airing Sunday, March 19 at 4 p.m.). ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Indira Gandhi
Indira Gandhi was born Indira Nehru on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, India. She was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru, who had fought for India’s independence from Britain. He became the first prime minister of independent India. She became involved in politics in 1938 when she joined the Congress Party. She married Feroze Gandhi in 1942 and they had two children. However, she and her husband were estranged for most of their marriage until he died in 1960. Gandhi was named leader of the Congress Party and became the prime minister of India in 1966. She served for three straight terms from 1966 to 1977, and a fourth term from 1980 to 1984. She enacted a number of unpopular policies and was ousted. Gandhi was assassinated by two of her own bodyguards several months after she had ordered the Indian army to attack a Sikh complex. The bodyguards were Sikh and wanted revenge. Free Additional Resources: The American Experience website has teaching tips and other resources to match each of this month’s episodes. The website also has videos and accompanying lesson plans for a variety of topics including biographies, civil rights, politics, and more. Students might each choose a topic of interest, watch the video, and report on their findings.

Program: Perfect 36: When Women Won the Vote Focus: History, Suffrage Grades: 6–12 Airing: Sunday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m. Overview: Pro- and anti-suffragists clashed in Nashville, Tennessee, in what came to be known as the “War of the Roses.” On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the deciding 36th state to enable passage of the 19th Amendment, and thereby granted women the Constitutional right to vote. Free Additional Resources: In the activity “Why Should Women Vote? The Suffrage Question,” students must analyze and chronologically sort a group of documents pertaining to the women’s suffrage movement as it intensified following passage of the 15th Amendment granting black men the right to vote. “Primary Source Set: Women’s Suffrage: Campaign for the Nineteenth Amendment” uses primary sources to explore the campaign for women’s suffrage through the passage of the 19th Amendment.

The History of Women’s Suffrage As part of Women’s History Month, learn about American women in the Progressive era during this Crash Course in Women’s Suffrage on PBS LearningMedia. The biggest accomplishment was women getting the right to vote, but there were many other advances made between 1890 and 1920. These include more women joining the workforce, women gaining more legal rights related to property, and women becoming key consumers for the economy.
