WYCC PBS Chicago and the Chicago Sinfonietta proudly present

CHICAGO SINFONIETTA: MUSIC FOR THE NEW WORLD

This one-hour special program features Dvorák’s New World Symphony, which embodies the American spirit through the eyes of an immigrant. The concert is conducted by Maestro MeiAnn Chen, an immigrant herself, whose personal connection to the theme ensures a very moving performance. “Growing up in Taiwan, I always thought Dvorák’s music speaks to me,” says Chen in an exclusive interview that is part of this special presentation. Chicago Sinfonietta: Music for the New World airs Saturday, April 9 at 6 p.m. with an encore presentation on Sunday, April 24 at 7 p.m. Composer Antonín Dvorák lived in the United States from 1892-1895, during which time he

6

wrote “From the New World” to capture what he thought was the national music of America. In what is already a tradition for the Chicago Sinfonietta concerts, the show includes innovative ways of introducing symphonic music by unexpected guests. “We have a little surprise that we can’t quite disclose. Other than I’m going to say that we’re going to have surprise elements in collaboration with the New World Symphony that the audience will find very refreshing, because we’re trying to set the scene of the specific era that inspired Dvorák for his masterwork,” Chen says. Created in 1987 by former music director and founder Maestro Paul Freeman, the Chicago Sinfonietta’s goal is to promote diversity, inclusion, and innovative programming.

ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with

David Tennant

David Tennant was born David John McDonald on April 18, 1971, in West Lothian, Scotland. There was already a David McDonald in the Actors’ Equity Union when Tennant began his acting career, so he changed his name. Tennant performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company both in the 1990s and in the 2000s, including a role as Hamlet in 2008 that earned him several awards. Tennant is a familiar face both on the big screen and small screen. He appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as Barty Crouch, Jr. in 2005, but his real breakout role was as the 10th doctor in the BBC’s popular sci-fi series Doctor Who from 2005-10, with an appearance in the 2013 50th anniversary special. Since then, Tennant has starred in the British crime drama Broadchurch, which was remade for American audiences under the name Gracepoint. Tennant played the same role in both, though his British character is Alec Hardy and his American character is Emmett Carver. Tennant keeps his personal life very private. He is married to actress Georgia Moffett. They have had three children together, and Tennant also adopted Moffett’s son from a previous marriage. WYCC PBS Chicago viewers can see a different side of Tennant in Masterpiece Mystery! The Escape Artist (airing Thursdays, April 7 and 14 at 8 p.m. ), where Tennant stars as lawyer Will Burton.
