Grab your detective kit and join Vera, who returns to WYCC PBS Chicago for a fourth season of the critically acclaimed murder mystery series. DCI Vera Stanhope is a smart investigator with many years of experience under her belt. When a series of murders bring Vera to Northumberland, on the coast of England, she and longtime colleague DS Joe Ashworth work together to solve these crimes. Two-time Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn brings the detective’s caustic wit, guile, and courage alive in Vera (airing Sundays at 8 p.m.), based on the best-selling Inspector Stanhope books by Ann Cleeves.

On Harbour Street Sunday, July 5 at 8 p.m. When pensioner Margaret Kraszewski is found dead on a busy Newcastle train at the height of rush hour, Vera and Joe investigate. Joe struggles to keep a professional distance, with his daughter being a key witness. The two detectives find themselves in a rundown seaside town, where they discover a tight-knit community living in the shadow of a long-held, explosive secret.
The Deer Hunters Sunday, July 19 at 8 p.m. Is the death of Shane Thurgood, a suspected poacher, merely a hunting accident—or something more sinister? Vera uncovers Shane’s tragic life and his new inheritance of a vast amount of land. When she looks into his checkered history with a family of poachers and landowners, she begins to understand his sudden departure 15 years earlier and ultimately what brought him to his end.
Protected Sunday, July 12 at 8 p.m. David Kenworthy has an argument with a local business owner—then is found dead on the beach at Whitley Bay hours later. Vera digs into the past and learns that the Kenworthy family’s business is not as respectable as it appears. When a second death occurs, Vera is faced with pressure to solve the case quickly; she must use all her tenacity to expose the rift in the heart of the fractured family.
Death of a Family Man Sunday, July 26 at 8 p.m. Businessman John Shearwood is found floating under the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Chief Investigator Owen Preece discovers that John’s business manager has been running a booze scam, and John was no longer sleeping in the family home. Vera unearths all of the secrets hidden behind John’s veneer of respectability and finds that his downfall goes back to a tragic incident years before.

Sage Grouse featured in This American Land
Independence Day is July 4th, but WYCC PBS Chicago is celebrating America all month long with a variety of programs on our history, our landscape, and more. Dating back to 1862, the Battle of Shiloh was one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on American soil. Nearly 24,000 soldiers were killed, missing, or wounded. Watch Shiloh: The Devil’s Own Day (Sunday, July 5 at 5:30 p.m.) and see the hardships men and women had to endure that cost many their lives in just two days of conflict. Follow Robert Redford in Wilderness: The Great Debate (Sunday, July 19 at 4 p.m.) as he joins a team of leading experts that examine both sides of the complex conversation of future land management in the American West. Hear the debate on wildlife preservation and how you can be a part of saving America’s ecosystems. Discover different parts of the country through This American Land every Sunday at 8:30 p.m. This month viewers will learn about many environmental issues, from how invasive species and wildfires are degrading the Western sagebrush habitat to how the hog farm built by the Buffalo National River has residents alarmed by the serious pollution threat. Learn how environmentalists are creating ways to protect and preserve the Oak Openings Regions and the indigenous wildlife within during Oak Openings Region: Discovering Our Natural Heritage on Saturday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m. (with an encore presentation on Sunday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m.). As “one of America’s Last Great Places,” you will see stunning video of rare flora and fauna in various terrains of oak savannas and wet prairies. Please see the listings for more information and for additional patriotic programming.
How much do you know about America’s past and present? There are plenty of courses at the City Colleges of Chicago that cover the history and development of our nation, from the arrival of the first colonists to today. Whether you’re interested in history, the humanities, literature, or another lens through which to learn about the country you call home, CCC has the right classes for you. Please see the CCC Course Catalog for additional courses: http://www.ccc.edu/Pages/ course-catalog.aspx To enroll today or find more information on classes offered by each of the seven City Colleges, please visit
