The popular British crime-solver returns for a riveting third season on WYCC PBS Chicago. Detective Constable Endeavour Morse is a cerebral and solitary character. Season three begins with Morse suspended from duty, pending inquiry. Morse must deal with the aftermath of the events that left him in prison and his senior officer with a life-threatening injury. Masterpiece Mystery! Endeavour, airing Thursdays at 8 p.m. starting August 18, comes from the creative mind behind WYCC favorites Inspector Lewis and Inspector Morse.

Thursday, August 18 at 8 p.m. A country fair turns sinister when a young bus conductor is found brutally murdered in the Oxfordshire countryside. Morse isn’t part of the team called to investigate because of his suspension from duty. However, when the body of the bus conductor turns up at his doorstep, he starts his own covert investigation. A disturbing secret is hidden in plain sight.
Thursday, August 25 at 8 p.m. An artist dies in a horrendous house fire that leaves the police baffled. Then a young housewife dies of a mysterious “tummy bug” that has also sickened half of the Oxford City police force. Morse’s investigation leads him to an innercity supermarket that is owned by a wealthy Oxford family with several personal and professional problems.
PREY Thursday, September 1 at 8 p.m. Morse is pulled into the dueling worlds of Oxford scientific academia, the city’s vast parks, night school, and the untamed wilderness of the Oxfordshire countryside. A Dutch au pair goes missing and a family with three troubled siblings is connected to the investigation. The au pair’s disappearance may be linked with a cold case from years ago.
CODA Thursday, September 8 at 8 p.m. Morse is occupied with an unexpected strife in his personal life. A college mentor asks Morse to monitor the movements of his estranged wife. Morse finds himself drawn to the woman he is investigating. Meanwhile, the grisly murder of a man who works in fashion causes a shakeup in Oxford’s criminal underworld. Morse wonders about his future on the force.

stationbreak Education in America The new schoolyear is just around the corner! Students and teachers will be heading back to the classroom soon. This month, WYCC PBS Chicago is airing several programs on different educational experiences, past and present. How is it that the United States ranks squarely in the middle of all developed countries in reading scores, and in the bottom half for mathematics? Why is it that more than 60% of all American 4th and 8th grade students cannot read with proficiency? Justice and Law Town Hall Meeting (airing Monday, August 8 at 9 p.m.) answers these important questions and more about the American education system. Nearly two years of detailed preparation and planning on the part of college administrators, state politicians, and business leaders led to the mostly peaceful enrollment of the first African American student at Clemson College. The Education of Harvey Gantt, airing Sunday, August 21 at 9:30 p.m., covers this pivotal yet largely forgotten story. How will health professionals of the future be trained? Rx: Doctors of Tomorrow, airing Sunday, August 28 at 2:30 p.m., follows medical students participating in a new kind of curriculum that focuses on working together and learning about the community they serve. ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Jacques Pépin
Jacques Pépin was born on December 18, 1935, in Bourg-en-Bresse, France. Pépin worked in the kitchen of his parents’ restaurant, where he discovered his love for food. At age 17, he left for Paris and trained under Lucien Diat at the Plaza Athénée. He later became chef for the French navy. Soon after, he was hired as a personal chef to three heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle. In 1959, Pépin came to the United Sates. He was the director of research and new development for Howard Johnson’s while he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in French literature at Columbia University. Pépin had a long-running column in The New York Times and now writes a quarterly column for Food & Wine magazine. He has written more than 20 cookbooks and a memoir. He has also hosted more than 13 television series. Pépin has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Daytime Emmy Award and the IACP TV Series Award. Pépin has also received three of the French government’s highest honors: he is a Chevalier de L’Ordre National de la Legion d’ Honneur, Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and a Chevalier de L’Ordre du Mérite Agricole. Renowned filmmakers mentor these young people in the art of filmmaking. This month’s films take place in Colombia and the United States. Free Additional Resources: The series website has behind-the-scenes and other resources, including discussion guides and ideas for taking action. Students might try their hand at filmmaking. They could examine their own community and look for an issue that needs attention.

Education and Outreach at Fan-Favorite Series Odd Squad Debuts First-Ever Movie In the upcoming Odd Squad: The Movie, airing Sunday, August 7 at 9 a.m., when a rival group of adults called Weird Team arrives with a gadget that fixes any odd problem, Odd Squad is run out of business. The agents are forced to disband and return to life as regular kids. When they learn the gadget isn’t solving problems, but only covering them up, the original Odd Squad agents, Olive and Otto, return to team up with the new Odd Squad. Together, they use math and teamwork to disprove Weird Team and prevent rampant oddness. In addition, new Odd Squad games will be available on pbskids.org and the PBS KIDS Games app.
New PBS KIDS App Encourages Kids and Parents to Play and Learn Together PBS KIDS debuted a new, free app designed to help kids build math skills and empower parents to support their learning. Designed for 3- to 5-yearolds, “Measure Up!” focuses on building kids’ measurement skills through a combination of games, videos, and activities from popular PBS KIDS series. The app also connects to a companion app with tools for parents and caregivers to track progress and find ideas for activities away from the screen. In “Measure Up!”, children can visit a world with characters from PBS KIDS series Dinosaur Train, Peg + Cat, and Sid the Science Kid. There, they explore concepts of length, width, capacity, and weight while collecting rewards through a combination of games, videos, and activities. Grounded in research that demonstrates that engaging with a variety of types of PBS KIDS content accelerates learning, “Measure Up!” thoughtfully sequences different types of media to build key math skills. The games and video content within the app experience have been rigorously tested, ensuring that they offer a positive learning experience for kids.
