New Year ’s M ystery MARATHON

Say farewell to 2015 and hello to 2016 with two full days of mystery. Join WYCC PBS Chicago for the New Year’s Mystery Marathon on Thursday, December 31 and Friday, January 1 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It’s a lineup full of viewer favorites, including: Masterpiece Mystery! Sherlock The Victorian-era star of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels is upgraded to the 21st century for a new set of thrilling mysteries with a modern twist.

Masterpiece Mystery! Miss Marple Another creation from crime writer Agatha Christie that follows the unassuming amateur sleuth as she solves a series of murders.

Masterpiece Mystery! Inspector Lewis Lewis and his partner Detective Sergeant Hathaway tackle murder and mayhem in Oxford while also struggling with existential questions about their futures.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Set in 1920s Melbourne, the series follows the glamorous Phryne, who always has her pistol close at hand and a male admirer even closer. The Doctor Blake Mysteries World War II veteran Dr. Lucien Blake returns home to Ballarat, Australia, to take over a local medical practice—and also solve crimes.

Father Brown A crime-solving Roman Catholic priest finds himself in the middle of many mysteries as a wide cast of characters seek his help.

Masterpiece Mystery! Foyle’s War A straightforward sleuth fights his own battles on the home front while World War II rages across Europe. Case Histories Jason Isaacs stars as Jackson Brodie, a private investigator with a traumatic past who throws himself into his detective work.

Inspector Morse The cantankerous and complex Morse works with his long-suffering partner, Sergeant Lewis, to solve crimes in and around Oxford.

6

Inspector George Gently An old-school detective in the 1960s tries his best despite the fact that the line between police and criminals is becoming blurred.

Please see the full schedule on page 19.

stationbreak The Sights of Europe

WYCC PBS Chicago takes viewers to places they may not otherwise go, or teaches viewers something they may not otherwise learn. The weekly travel programs, along with a variety of specials, allow viewers to take in the sights of Europe from the comfort of your home. Rick Steves’ Europe (airing Wednesdays at 8 p.m.) is one of the most popular and well-known travel series. This month, Steves travels to Salzburg in Austria, Burgundy and Dordogne in France, and Barcelona and Catalunya in Spain. Travelscope (airing Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m.), hosted by Joseph Rosendo, takes viewers all over the world—but for December, there are some special European episodes. Visit Brittancy, France; see what Christmas is like in Switzerland; and take a tour through Germany’s holiday markets.

The continent of Europe has changed drastically over the centuries, and events that take place in Europe continue to have a worldwide impact on both politics and culture. The City Colleges of Chicago offers courses on Europe’s past and present, as well as how Europe fits into a more global perspective. If learning a foreign language is something you’d like to do, CCC also offers courses in Polish, French, Italian, and Spanish. Please see the CCC Course Catalog for additional courses: http://www.ccc.edu/Pages/ course-catalog.aspx To enroll today or find more information on classes offered by each of the seven City Colleges, please visit

www.ccc.edu or call 773-COLLEGE (773-265-5343). 20

To get a better sense of the current pulse of Europe, tune in to Focus on Europe, airing Saturdays at 10 p.m. This news program covers the political, social, and cultural aspects of life in Europe and takes a closer look at Europeans’ views, hopes, and fears. A Norway Passage: The Most Beautiful Voyage (airing Wednesday, December 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, December 26 at 7 p.m.) is a sixday journey that includes the cosmopolitan city of Bergen, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Geirangerfjord, the old Viking town of Trondheim, and the lovely Lufoten Islands. Learn about the Czech interpretation of American music during Banjo Romantika: American Bluegrass Music & The Czech Imagination, airing Saturday, December 26 at 6 p.m. Czechs first heard bluegrass during World War II, at a time when they were under Communist rule, and this new music represented freedom to them. They then turned it into a musical style all their own. Please see the listings for more information on these programs and others.

ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with

Julia Child

TV chef and author Julia (McWilliams) Child was born on August 15, 1912, in Pasadena, California. Although the award-winning chef gained her fame due to her adaptation of complex French cooking for the everyday American, her original plans were not to become an iconic chef. Child earned a degree from Smith College with the intention to become a writer. Shortly after graduating, Child went on to work in advertising, but was later fired for “gross insubordination.” Child moved to Washington, D.C., in 1941 to volunteer as a research assistant for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). She met Paul Child in 1945, and the couple married the following year. They moved to France in 1948, and that is when her love for French cuisine was born. Child pursued culinary training at the Cordon Bleu cooking school, where she met classmates Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle. In addition to collaborating to create the cooking school L’Ecole des Trois Gourmandes (The School of the Three Gourmands), the trio also became the authors of the award-winning, two-volume cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The cookbook was a bestseller for five consecutive years after its release. Child went on to host a number of cooking shows over several decades, including Cooking with Master Chefs, Baking with Julia, In the Kitchen with Master Chefs, and Cooking in Concert.
