he Napier Port Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards are proudly owned and event managed by the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society. The awards, along with the Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year, are long established and contribute significantly to the Societies vision of championing the primary industry across Hawke’s Bay. Awards such as these articulate the story of excellence within rural New Zealand and celebrate success, business innovation and growth. The Hawke’s Bay A & P Society has traditionally promoted agricultural, pastoral, horticultural, viticulture and forestry resources through its longest running event, The Hawke’s Bay Show and today the event portfolio of the organisation has grown to incorporate a
number of significant events that pave the way for initiative and forward thinking in the rural sector, contributing to positive economic development across the region. Other events organised by the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society include the BNZ National Horticulture Field Day in June, the Hawke’s Bay A&P Bayley’s Wine Awards in October and The Royal A & P Show also in October. The Society is located at the historic and beautiful Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds Tomoana and the facilities on site are frequently hired out by the community and is the home base for the national event; Landrover Horse of Year. For more information on the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society contact the General Manager, Sally Jackson.

Napier Port plans for local export growth Hawke’s Bay’s buoyant economy doesn’t appear to be slowing any time soon. Strong growth is forecast across our tourism, farming and horticulture sectors, while the long-anticipated ‘Wall of Wood’ is stacking up at the port.
I
ntrinsically linked to Hawke’s Bay’s economic drivers, there’s no better gauge of our local economy than activity at Napier Port. 2017 saw cargo records at the port smashed across the board, with the equivalent of over 4.7 million tonnes of cargo being handled throughout the year. “The port is a great reflection of the health of our region’s economy,” says Napier Port CEO Todd Dawson. “Hawke’s Bay is driven by the primary sector, and when they’re growing and succeeding, our port and our economy are too.” That’s one of the reasons Napier Port is passionate about supporting local industry and celebrating innovation. “We’re really proud to sponsor the Napier Port Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards. It’s a great night that recognises some outstanding talent, commitment and success amongst our farmers, foresters and the rural professionals who support them.”
“We congratulate all those who won on the night, and everyone who took the leap and entered the awards. And, of course, we’re looking forward to seeing more of their top quality farm and forest exports coming through the port!”
A FUTURE-PROOFED PORT
The region’s booming forestry sector saw a record 219,419 tonnes of logs handled during the month of March. And it won’t stop there – the port expects to welcome an extra 500,000 tonnes of logs over the course of the year. “The Wall of Wood is well and truly stacking up. And that’s just one element of our cargo mix – we’re also seeing growth across apple, wine and meat exports.” With containers stacked six high and growth in cargo volumes expected to continue, the port has its eye on future capacity. “We’re ambitious for Hawke’s Bay – we know that the world wants more of
our exports, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Todd says. “As the new guy in town, I’m dedicating a lot of time to meeting our customers, getting to grips with their businesses, and understanding what they need from their port.” The port has just installed new container towers capable of powering an extra 288 refrigerated containers, and invested in new log bookends that enable it to build higher log stacks. It’s also bringing on more staff and investing in more container forklifts. In a major milestone for the port, it has recently submitted its application for resource consent to build a new wharf long enough to handle the next generation of cargo vessels. “We want to make sure that we have the right mix of infrastructure, services and shipping connections in place, and that we make the right decisions for the future of our customers and the region,” says Todd.

A 30 year association recognising farmers
T
he Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of The Year Awards identify, promote and celebrate excellence in pastoral farming in Hawke’s Bay. We are proud of our 30-year association with the Hawke’s Bay Farmer of The Year Awards. Congratulations to Northern Hawke’s Bay’s Monarae Station and its impressive farm manager David Danks from the Pam Torbett Charitable Trust. From Silver Fern Farms we wish to congratulate all competitors in the Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year Competition for setting high standards and achieving them. Silver Fern Farms is a proud supporter of the competition as it unearths talented farmers and recognises them for their abilities to produce inspirational quality food. It started in 1988 with Richmond Meats, when they became the naming sponsors of the competition and a contributor to the prize pool that now totals over $30,000. We are grateful for the foresight of people in the company like Lloyd Fitness and John Foster, who saw the value supporting farming excellence and the sharing of expertise in the community. It’s this spirit of community – the place and the people and their passion – that appeals to our consumers in markets who want red meat of the quality Silver Fern Farms’ Farmers of the Year produce. We believe that greater returns for farmers in the long-term will come from focusing on delivering what consumers want. This is the essence of our plate to pasture strategy. Building brands consumers trust and pay a premium for, locally and in offshore markets, takes time. Our strategy is a long-term approach to create value for Silver Fern Farms and for our farmer partners. It is supported by people in our business who continually improve the everyday things we do – from
increasing yields in plants, to finding the most effective freight options to get our food to market. As we make progress on our strategy we hope to make an important contribution to building a more sustainable future for one of New Zealand’s most significant primary sectors. Our strategy fits well with the purpose of this prestigious competition.
Recognising achievement, providing feedback and investing in the future of our farmers and farm leaders is important to us. The Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year Award is an opportunity to acknowledge farming achievements and leadership. We are proud to be involved and we hope they encourage farmers to continue to
think of the experience they deliver for the consumer.

David Danks just wanted to see where he stood BY CHRYS AYLEY
I
t was a love of dogs that attracted a “full blown townie” to sheep and beef farming. David Danks, this year’s Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year 2018, describes himself as quiet but get him talking about his passion for stock management and we could easily fill a book. David has been manager of Monarae Station in Putere, northern Hawke’s Bay for 27 years. The station was founded in 1928 with the purchase of 3200 acres by the Torbett family and became a charitable trust in 1988 which has benefitted many local charities. The trustees are Roydon Day, Chairman and Doug Smith who are extremely supportive of David, and his partner Jeanette Nestved. “It’s a very happy working environment.” In addition the couple enjoy the freedom, the quietness and the fresh air the breeding farm located at 300-900 metres offers them, although the winters are harsh and they get hammered by the north-westers. They both enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding them and David enjoys good hunting and fishing while Jeanette enjoys photography. Chatting through his career history brings back many memories such as meeting the late Pam Torbett while collecting money for his milk and paper runs in Westshore. When asked what he wanted to do when he grew up the 12-year-old said he wanted to be a farmer. She pointed to the hills and said “I own a farm up there. Maybe you’ll come and work for me.” It wasn’t until he’d been at Monarae Station for a while that he remembered that conversation and it “clicked” that the lady he spoke to was the late Pam Torbett. Unsuccessful for a Smedley cadetship due, Dave says to his being too nervous, the youngster gained a five year cadetship
with Federated Farmers. It was a steep learning curve that took him to several sheep and beef farms in Hawke’s Bay. “The experience was invaluable as the first farm taught me observance, the

second responsibility, and the last one taught me in a big way that farming wasn’t from eight to five,” he says. The ambitious youngster moved to Tutira and became a manager. He recognised
that there was no money in shepherding and “I wanted to get into my own ideas, to do things I’d learnt previously.” He then moved to stock manager working three properties. After a decade or so he took on

the manager job at Monarae in 1991 and has been there ever since. David manages sheep, cattle and deer in a 51/35 and 14 % split between species on 1530 ha (1171 effective) including a 90 ha property in Wairoa with its own block manager. Initially David focused on improving the cattle emphasising constitution and meat. They run Angus with an Angus/Hereford cross. (400 that he mates.) “There’s plenty of room to pick replacements. They have to have a good constitution, length and body depth and be “full in the pants. I’m looking at them every day so I’ve got to like them.” He’s very particular about the bulls he buys and pays a lot of attention to the EBVs but also the animal itself. Thriving on challenges David has raised the lambing percentages from 110% to 154.5% but he’s not happy with that and his ultimate goal is 165% at this stage. The deer were initially wild and were caught by Rod McCallum the previous manager who started farming them. David used to buy good stags until he found they wouldn’t shift but he was putting their blood line through the hinds. Now he leases stags from a good mate, Neil Aitken. David knew nothing about deer when he
David and his partner Jeanette enjoy both the working and physical environment.

started at Monarae but has managed to improve fawning percentages, and velvet weight, cutting 823.15kg of velvet lifting it 200kg with the same amount of stags cut this year. Dave runs the station as if it was his farm. “I farm to make money, to get the maximum price for stock sold. I also benchmark myself against my financial effort e.g. lamb weight, lambing percentage, calving percentage etc. That’s what keeps me going,” he says. “I’m always looking to improve the previous year’s result.” “The job’s a challenge as every year is different. The weather pattern changes every year. We’re now getting droughts up here.” “Farm consultant John Cannon comes up once a month and goes through the sales and finances. He’s crucial for the trustees and he’s an ear for me.” There are a number of people David acknowledges have been of tremendous support, and inspiration to him over the years. “I had great admiration for the late Alf Dixon, he was Chairman, the main trustee when I started. He arranged for the farm to be placed into a charitable trust under Pam’s wishes just before she passed away in 1988. He had a huge love for Monarae.”

“The late Paul Thomas was also a trustee. He had a great influence on the cattle. Both were very complimentary about what you did. They were both admirable people.” “The late Preston Wallace came in as supervisor about 19 years ago. He was my inspiration. My challenge was to beat him. Whatever he had done in his farming career I had to do better. Kevin Ryan has been an absolute asset to me in the selections of genetics in animals. He’s such a knowledgeable guy.”
The station employs father and son Arnold and Hatonio Oliver as workers. Arnold has been with David for 23 years and Hatonio about eight years. They make David’s life easier and they are all on the same wavelength.” Good reliable staff are a necessity on a farm and I’m lucky to have them.” “The Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year is a great competition. More farmers should go into it. I’m happy for the experience. I just wanted to see where I stood. I’m humbled by the whole experience.”

an honour and a privilege for me, I mean young people make me feel young,” he says. He puts a lot of his farming success down to the district he lived in, in Flemington, crediting the community support. The lifestyle there afforded him his chosen career and a highlight was growing the business to becoming more resilient. “There is an old saying, man proposes and God disposes, so do what you like but mother nature will always come back and kick you.” “It’s about having the resilience to handle those kicks as a viable business as well as farming in harmony with the environment.” He won the Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year in 1986, the AC Cameron Award for Leadership and Excellence in Farming in 1995 and the Hawke’s Bay Farm Forester of the Year in 2007. s a child there was nothing Charlie Bogard disliked more than planting trees for his mother. The young widow, Sallie, managed a 290ha property on the gravels behind Maraekakaho and raised a family of four children. Some thought her “a bit nutty” when she started planting pine trees in the 1970s but life has gone full circle and it’s now Charlie passionately planting trees hoping his three children might, one day, follow in his footsteps. Charlie was thrilled to learn that he and his partner Michelle had been awarded the Pan Pac Hawke’s Bay Farm Forester of the Year award. It was recogniton that

Sallie’s determination to plant trees and his decision to continue has paid dividends. Just recently almost 12ha of pinus radiata has been harvested while the price of timber is high. The farm has been in the family since the 1920s. Paul Ashby, Charlie’s grandfather was the first to farm the land followed by Henk Bogard, a Dutchman who married Sallie Ashby. Initially Charlie leased the farm from his mother and managed to buy the whole property from his family but he now leases much of the land to a neighbouring farmer. A credit manager with ANZ by day, Charlie enjoys planting and tending his trees in his spare time. Trees, Charlie says, don’t grow terribly well in Maraekakaho as it’s quite
dry with gravel terraces, easy hills and steep, eroding gullies. Almost 12ha of 25-years-old pine has recently been harvested while the price is good leaving another 7ha to be harvested when mature. Management of the harvest is handled by a forestry consultant. Replanting continues to ensure a steady and regular replacement supply of pine although with the labour led governments goal to plant 1billion trees between now and 2027 there isn’t enough supply to meet demand so re-planting will probably be next year. Willows and poplars line the waterways and pine stands have been planted at the head of a steep sided gullies to prevent major damage during high rain fall events. Amenity planting throughout
the property include several exotic species such as various eucalypts, and honey lotus trees (gleditsia) first planted by Sallie with the planting tradition continued by Charlie. They do well in the dry and the seed pods are very nutritious for livestock. Willows are pollarded with the cuttings being fed to the stock in dry weather, along with poplar. The property also has one area of regenerating native scrub and trees that has been extended and enhancement planted and is now a QE2 covenant. This property illustrates how small farm units can be maintained within a family by leasing out components of management and concentrating on low input, high value production systems suited to the property with the support of ‘off farm’ income.

Pan Pac: Supporting the Hawke’s Bay Farm Forester of the Year
P
an Pac Forest Products (Pan Pac) is a Hawke’s Bay based company, which owns 34,781 hectares of forest located in Hawke’s Bay. Logs from these forests make up about 59% of the demand from Pan Pac’s Sawmill and Pulpmill operations that are based on a single site a few kilometres north of Napier. Pan Pac’s state-of-the-art sawmill is the biggest single site sawmill in New Zealand. It processes around 766,000 tonnes of large high quality pruned and unpruned sawlogs per year into lumber, which is exported to many countries worldwide. Extracting the value at low cost from these logs remains the main focus for our lumber operation. Pan Pac’s pulpmill was originally established in 1973 to produce pulp for export to Japan for newsprint. It has recently undergone a major rebuild, with an investment of around $70 million to upgrade its processing capacity and technology to allow it to produce high quality pulp for
the Asian packaging market. The pulpmill and a small amount of external woodchip sales utilises around 713,500 tonne of wood chips from sawmills and pulplog suppliers in Hawke’s Bay and the surrounding districts. Pan Pac maximises the value of its forest investment through its own value-added processing of logs through its sawmill and pulpmill. Pan Pac also has many other domestic and export customers utilising logs from its forests to ensure the best overall value is achieved. Given that Pan Pac’s forests only produce 58% of the logs required by the sawmill and pulpmill operations, they also have very strong demand from other domestic and export log customers of which they are the key supplier. Due to consistent demand throughout the year Pan Pac purchase a significant volume in Hawke’s Bay from farmers and foresters and then utilise their harvest planning, engineering, harvesting, purchase and
marketing staff to maximise the value of their forest while minimising costs. This contract workforce is the same workforce that Pan Pac utilises in its own forests to maximise value while operating cost efficient harvesting operations. Pan Pac prides itself on maintaining a high standard of safety and environmental management over all of its operations. Pan Pac’s forests are all certified under the prestigious Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) certification, and they apply the same standards when managing and harvesting private forests and woodlots. Pan Pac has a long history of working with and maintaining relationships with local Hawke’s Bay farmers as well as supporting the Hawke’s Bay Farm Forestry Association and we look forward to continuing this relationship for many years to come. Proudly Supporting the Hawke’s Bay Farm Forester of the Year.

The BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Innovation Award
StockX
T
he BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Innovation Award recognises outstanding individuals and businesses making a significant contribution through ideas, knowledge, skills and application to improve the performance of the primary sector. Having been involved as a long-term sponsor of the Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year competition, BWR are thrilled to now be the naming sponsor of this exciting new innovation award. We recognise the importance of the primary sector and the role that innovation plays in developing excellence and performance in that sector. Last year we launched our new division, BWR Tech Hub to support businesses to adopt new technologies to streamline and grow as we see this as a key for our clients to remain competitive and continue to thrive. We congratulate all the innovative entrants this year and in particular the inaugural winners StockX. Another award has been added to the trophy cabinet of leading Hawke’s Bay based AgriTech business StockX.
T
he online livestock trading platform took out the inaugural BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Innovation Award at last week’s Port of Napier Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards. The award acknowledges and celebrates those within Hawke’s Bay who have made an outstanding contribution through their knowledge, skills and application to improve the performance of the primary industries. “It’s great the see the Primary Sector Awards had the foresight to include an Innovation Award and to be the first winner is great recognition of what our team
has achieved to date,” says StockX managing director Jason Roebuck. In a little over two years, the platform has created a national livestock marketplace and attracted nearly 4000 registered farmers and sixteen meat processors from across the country, who use the platform to buy and sell store, prime and cull stock. The platform offers it users a secure and transparent marketplace for livestock, with payment security and livestock quality assurance for buyers. “Every start-up has its own story and it hasn’t been an easy task to get this far with StockX, but through strong shareholder
support, customer demand and a collaborative partnership approach with industry we are building a national livestock marketplace that is directly connecting farmers and processors and maximizing value for all participants.” The beauty of the trading platform is that it enables farmers access to livestock opportunities outside of their area and the flexibility to trade when they want, with whom they want, all at a low cost. “Our entire team have agricultural backgrounds and we will further develop the platform through industry collaboration with the aim of being seen as a reliable and
trusted partner for livestock transactions.” StockX is described as leading innovation in its field and is the only platform business of its type currently operating in the country. “There are no plans to take it overseas just yet with the main focus staying firmly on creating value for New Zealand.” “StockX continues to evolve its marketplace with online auctions coming soon and a collaboration with Livestock Agency business nationally will enable a marketplace for all participants. “

wenty-two-year old veterinary student Marcus Yule is the recipient of this year’s Lawson Robinson Hawke’s Bay A&P Scholarship. “I was pretty pleased, I thought I’d give it a go and was selected as a finalist,” he says. “It was a really good experience to go through the selection and interview process, I enjoyed talking to the judges.” Yule is in his fourth year of a five year Bachelor of Veterinary Science at Massey University in Palmerston North. But being accepted onto his chosen degree didn’t come easy, when he didn’t make it in on his first attempt he tried again the next year. “I suppose not getting in just made me want it more,” he says. “But I got through on my second go and it was worth it, I suppose for me if you’re thinking about it don’t be discouraged by what anyone else says, you’ll be surprised what you can achieve, you just have to back yourself.” His love for animals has been a life long affair after growing up on a sheep and beef farm in Elsthorpe.
While still living at home it was his parents that encouraged him to get qualified through university and for Yule becoming a vet was the perfect fit. His ultimate goal is to become a vet that specialises in production animals like cattle, deer, and sheep. “I enjoy working with animals, the opportunity to do this as a vet as well as make a difference to people’s farming operations encouraged me to enrol in the degree”. Yule a former head boy of Havelock North High School in 2013 will receive $3000 as part of the scholarship. Money that will help him cover travel expenses to complete the practical experience required for his degree in various clinics. “That’s something I’m quite proud of, when you work with good people it rubs off on to you.” He’s built a strong consultancy business, Challenge Consultancy Ltd based in Hawke’s Bay where he specialises in agribusiness and provides strategic operational advice. “You’ve got to enjoy what you do, over time you get to know your clients some I’ve had for over 10 years and you just become ingrained in their business.” “You know their challenges and personalities, it is a people job even though it is technical job and a challenging one, it’s relationship based and your clients have to trust you and you can betray that.” As part of the award he was cited as showing outstanding commitment and leadership in the primary sector, from the doing the hard yards himself as a new immigrant to implementing his skills and knowledge across the sector. “Farming has changed dramatically in 30 years, farming is always evolving and adapting to moving climate or change in
markets and it always brings challenges – there is never a dull moment in this job.” He says nothing would be possible without the support of his wife Robyn and his five children “that put up with me working a lot of the time.”

John Buck
O
ne of the country’s premium wine makers John Buck, chairman of Te Mata Estate Winery, has been awarded the Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Industry Leader award. A career spanning more than 40 years that began with the purchase of a derelict Hawke’s Bay winery in 1974, has grown into 11 properties and has turned into a global business. “We wanted to play at the top level internationally and we’ve succeeded in doing that, mainly more in recent years, that’s very true.” “I lived the dream but Hawke’s Bay gets the credit, I’m grateful to Hawke’s Bay rather than Hawke’s Bay being grateful to me it’s the horticulture climate it possesses is what made it.” The award recognises outstanding leadership within the primary sector while demonstrating a wider commitment to Hawke’s Bay. Buck met all the award criteria of having significantly contributed to the primary sector through innovation, determination, growth and leadership and is seen as a ‘primary sector’ figurehead. He was invited to the awards night by his son and when his name was read out
to receive the award it came as a complete surprise to him. “It’s the accolades from your peers they’re the sort of people who bring stability and prosperity to Hawke’s Bay.” “The people I have the utmost admiration for, so it really means something to me, none of that corny stuff, it has real relevance.” Last year the iconic Te Mata Coleraine was internationally recognised as one of the very best reds in the world and featured in the prominent English wine magazine Decanter. It named the Coleraine 98 in it’s series of wine legends and is the only New Zealand wine to receive that accolade internationally. Under his vision and leadership the family business, which includes his three sons, has now extended down to it’s third generation with his eldest grand child recently becoming a full time employee. “We’re thrilled to have to have her,” he says “it’s what you like to think you were put on this earth for to hand it on to your family and that is very emotionally rewarding.” Over the years he has received multiple accolades including a commemoration medal for services to New Zealand and an OBE for services to the wine industry and has been inducted into the wine hall of fame.
