SHOWCASE OF LEADING HAWKE’S BAY BUSINESS 2019

OUR SPARKLING REGIONAL ECONOMY By Carolyn Neville, CEO Business Hawke’s Bay

W

hile the national economy remains in a holding pattern, in Hawke’s Bay consumer confidence shows no sign of abating. Our economic indicators keep moving steadily in the right direction. Many of our measures of economic health are at record highs or well above the 10-year average. Unemployment is falling steadily and is at a decade record low.

BUT IT’S NOT ALL BEER AND SKITTLES Hawke’s Bay faces some real challenges that if not addressed, will take some of the shine off our stellar performance and constrain our growth potential. The labour market remains tight, with competition for workers expected to increase over the coming year. So far, wage growth is slow. The primary sector has real staffing challenges, but what’s predicted is widespread shortages

Consumers are feeling confident enough to make large purchases such as cars as well as keeping on spending in the shops. Business is booming, and not surprisingly, business operators are feeling upbeat too, splashing out on cars, trucks and vans. Commercial vehicle registrations are at an all-time high. Hawke’s Bay’s economy is doing well and continues to outperform the national economy on many measures. Sustained quarter-onquarter momentum shows that it’s not a flash in the pan. According to ASB’s Regional Economic Scoreboard, Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s top performing regional economy. We’ve been in the top spot for the past two quarters. Recently announced

investment in water and roading infrastructure from the Provincial Growth Fund will also help Hawke’s Bay to continue to grow. The key drivers of our sparkling regional economy include continued strong primary sector performance, robust population growth, a buoyant housing market and a busy tourism sector. Looking ahead, ASB predicts solid momentum for most of Hawke’s Bay’s industries and isn’t ruling out the beautiful Bay notching up a hat trick of Regional Economic Scoreboard gold medals next quarter. Key regional economic highlights include*: • Provisional GDP growth estimate 2.9% compared to 2.5% nationally

• Regional unemployment at 4.1% (a 10-year low) compared to 4.3% nationally • Electronic card spending on retail purchases up 6.6% compared to 4.1% nationally • House prices up 10.1% compared to 1.3% nationally (for the March 19 quarter) • Value of non-residential consents at a 10-year high at $153 million • Commercial vehicle registrations up 8% compared to -0.07% nationally • Tourism spend up 3.5%, compared to 3.3% nationally. *Source Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor Hawke’s Bay Region March 2019. support to improve work-readiness. Business Hawke’s Bay and regional leaders are working with key industry players on what this could look like. The housing market is causing headaches too. Media articles report average house prices increasing by almost $170,000 over the past five years, and commentators say the market is still strong. This is a real constraint to growth and to attracting and housing the workforce that Hawke’s Bay needs to deliver on its growth potential. The region is discussing our housing constraints to move towards a workable solution.

and increasing competition for staff across the board. Businesses are expecting to continue increasing pay to retain their staff over the next few years. Average salaries in Hawke’s Bay have traditionally lagged behind larger centres, so there could be some catching up to do in order to keep work teams intact. Over the long term Hawke’s Bay needs to find a sustainable solution to the lumpiness and shortages in the labour market, attract skilled workers, upskill the workers already available and provide wrap-around

ERICKSEN HONDA - A FAMILY AFFAIR

W

e are Honda’s premier motorcycle and marine dealership on the East Coast of the North Island.

A family affair

Mark and Kim Ericksen’s love of motorcycles began back in their teenage years and is just as strong today. Business partners, and husband and wife, the couple have their two sons, Hayden and Matt working alongside them at Ericksen Honda in Bayview. This is truly a home grown, locally owned and operated Hawke’s Bay business. It’s a story of dedication and perseverance for Mark and Kim who are proud of their record of being the longest running Local Honda dealership servicing the entire East Coast of the North Island. They are continuously rated amongst the top five Honda dealers and there are 53 in the whole country! In the early 80s Mark worked as an on-farm service mechanic for the Mills family who ran H.B Motorcycles When the business closed Mark and Kim established Ericksen Services at Bay view in 1985. Initially they serviced motorcycles, three and four wheelers on Hawke’s Bay farms. It’s a testament to their hard work, dedication and solid values that many of their customers have been with them ever since. Since then the site in Bay View has grown considerably to accommodate the growing business and later this year, they will open a new marine and motorsport centre next door to their motorcycle dealership.

Early years

Early in 1992 Mark and Kim became Ericksen Honda and acquired the full Honda motorcycle dealership. Mark has continued to provide an on-farm service and extra staff were taken on as the business grew. Son Hayden is the Service Manager and Matt is the Sales Manager. The total team, including Mark and Kim, numbers 14 with all the workshop staff being qualified mechanics. Both Hayden and Matt have

children of their own although they are far too young to be considering full time work just yet! In 1998 the couple outgrew their small building in the Bayview Township and moved to temporary premises across the road until their new building was completed in 1999.

Outstanding service

Providing outstanding service is an extremely important part of their day to day operation. They operate three on-farm service trucks which means they are able to service clients as far away as Tolaga Bay, although their primary client base covers Napier to Wairoa.

Road bikes and off road bikes Motorcycles come in all shapes and sizes and Ericksen Honda offers a huge selection of sports bikes, cruisers, naked bikes, touring, adventure, commuter and scooter bikes. The selection of off-road bikes includes farm, dirt, kids and used bikes.

Honda power equipment

in development. They can also service other marine makes and models.

Ericksen Marine

There’s a huge range of on road and off road accessories helmets, gloves, boots, jackets, pants, goggles, armour and clothing to name but a few of the goods available. They stock mainly European brands as the focus is on top quality products that will stand the test of time. Call in for a browse and to have a chat with the friendly team at Ericksen Honda, Bayview, Napier.

Recognising the lack of space to adequately showcase and service the entire Honda marine product range the family have embarked on building a new marine and motorsport centre They sell and service a vast range of Honda outboard motors from the 2.3hp to the flagship 250hp and soon the brand new 300hp Honda outboard

SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT By Napier MP and Minister for Small Business Stuart Nash

art of my job is to be a salesman for Hawke’s Bay. We have a positive story to tell about our regional economy. But how do we ensure that we keep up the momentum and adapt to future change? We all know this. But we take nothing for granted. Hawke’s Bay is known for its rich farming and horticulture sectors. But it faces social challenges and economic challenges. We have high youth unemployment, low wages and low growth rates

First of all – the economic snapshot. The most recent ASB Bank Regional Scoreboard found Hawke’s Bay was the top performing region across the country. “The sunny Hawke’s Bay shines brightest” it proclaimed.

the conversion of livestock farms to horticulture. Hawke’s Bay Airport will receive funding to look into introducing new air freight services to export highvalue perishable produce such as fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood. Access to Napier Port is being enhanced with funding for the City Council to relocate industrial and commercial weighbridge facilities away from Ahuriri. It will remove heavy vehicles from the area which is a growing entertainment precinct. The Hastings Eastside area has great potential we need to unlock, such as for hospitality and economic development. We are funding this work. Wairoa has not only faced significant economic and social challenges, it has often found it difficult to be heard by central government. It is personally pleasing

per capita compared to the rest of the country. We have struggled in the past with neglect of our infrastructure and small businesses. The region is a significant contributor to New Zealand’s agriculture sector. It is a globallyrenowned producer, processor and exporter of primary products. It depends heavily on a reliable water supply and efficient transport to get its products to market. We are at a moment in time when decisions are being made in

Hawke’s Bay is known for its rich farming and horticulture sectors.

Infrastructure like this is not an oldfashioned priority. It is a vital modern tool to connect us to the world. We are using the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) to give this region a shot in the arm. Starting in Central Hawke’s Bay we are investing $40 million on roading and water storage infrastructure. Little towns often ignored by past governments, like Waipukurau, Dannevirke and Porangahau, will directly benefit from the projects. The kiwifruit industry in CHB is looking to expand its planting by to see the needs of Wairoa being taken seriously by this Government. We are committed to lifting the productivity of towns like Wairoa, with high unemployment and an ageing population. The investments will help this rural community lift itself up to greater opportunities. Road and rail and ports are great examples of infrastructure and Julius Vogel would recognise this. But he would be blown away by some of our investments in digital technology. Like connecting 11 remote Hawke’s Bay marae to broadband internet services. We will be able to roll out education, tourism and other business development opportunities and show our unique Kahungunu face to the world. The total investment package, worth more than $68 million, will build on our natural strengths. It will unlock the economic potential

more than 100 hectares per year over the next five to seven years, and an increase in logging is predicted by 2028. To support this growth, producers need water and a reliable roading infrastructure to connect producers to their market. We are funding the first step of feasibility work on the Tukituki water project. We are also supporting feasibility work on the small-scale water storage on the Heretaunga Plains. The Heretaunga project will ensure enough water is stored for use when supplies are low over summer. It will

Wellington that I believe will change our regional economy for the better, and create a legacy for those who come after us. In the history of this country’s economic and social development there are landmark events when ambitious decisions changed the future. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the appointment of Julius Vogel as Colonial Treasurer. The Vogel public works schemes gave us railways, roads, telegraph lines and land development.

We are now in a renaissance of infrastructural development that Vogel would envy. This month we have witnessed one of the biggest economic stimulus packages ever directed to our region. From Central Hawke’s Bay to Wairoa, we are targeting millions of dollars of investment in a way that will create a generational legacy. The Napier to Wairoa rail line has just officially re-opened, seven years after the devastating washout. TRANSFORMED TO A PLAYGROUND OF A DIFFERENT SORT…

I

t took 12 months to transform an old bowling club site into a brand new custom designed Early Learning Centre for children aged 6 months to 6 years. Now just under 2 years later what used to be the site of the Hastings Bowling Club in central Hastings is now recognised as a very special place in Hawkes Bay for young children to learn and develop. There have been over 100 children enrolled during that time and now there is a steady stream going on to primary school more than ready for the next stage in their lives. This Centre prides itself in being different to most others. For example the indoor and outdoor spaces far exceed government minimums. Similarly the teacher to child ratios are higher than required so as to better ensure quality care and learning for all children. Teachers have been carefully selected for their similar beliefs in nurturing, encouraging and having fun with children.

HAIR COLOUR, CUT AND FINISHING SPECIALISTS

T

ash Bird is the Owner and Executive Director of M>Phosis Hair Studio in Hastings who is dedicated to training the next generation of hair stylists and securing the future of the salon and the industry as a whole. Tash has over 20 yearsexperience in the industry and bought M>Phosis in 2012 having just returned from overseas where she honed her hair styling and cutting skills. Over the years she has received numerous awards, has represented New Zealand internationally, and is currently the winner of the 2018 Industry Trainer of the Year. She’s an active member of the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers (NZARH) and is a judge for the NZARH live regional hairdressing competitions. Soon she’ll be judging competitions in Auckland and Dunedin and competing in the NZARH competition in Wellington in August. Training for the team and apprentices is ongoing and is both practical and theoretical with opportunities to attend external training. This way knowledge can be shared with the whole team.

Tash is extraordinarily supportive of her stylists and actively encourages career minded youngsters to join them for work experience. Right now a Gateway student from Karamu High School gains experience once a week and an EIT student is working towards completing 60 hours work experience.

Working with Tash is a team of three: Advanced Stylist Michelle Ironside, Emerging Stylist Gracie Nisbet and apprentice Gaylene Fryer who is a qualified barber. Between them they have won many awards. Currently there is a full or part time opportunity at M>Phosis for a stylist with at least four years-experience who is either qualified or prepared to qualify. Tash is looking for someone who is motivated, career minded and who enjoys competition work.

AMAZING team...
