I

t hardly seems 12 months have passed since we published our 25th edition of our annual Stud Bull Catalogue. But here we are again for our 26th edition which is bigger and better than ever before. It’s unusual for any publication to have such a long life and it’s thanks to the ongoing support of our advertisers that this catalogue is so successful. Inside you will find plenty of information about the all-important sales and an interesting collection of features. We have a couple of articles about young people

passionate about the industry, several stud profiles, some delicious beef recipes and details of the first ever King Country Bull Sale Week. Other articles take a look at technology, we preview the World Hereford Conference and there’s an interesting article by a local vet encouraging you to be a “Peeping Tom.” We hope you enjoy this edition and do let us know if there’s something you’d especially enjoy reading next year, if you’d like to contribute an article or discuss advertising options.

Farming: a

rom using tablets and smartphones to share information to introducing robots and drones to carry out tasks, farming has increasingly become a technologybased business, according to accounting software provider MYOB. “Farming today is very different compared to as little as 10 years ago,” said MYOB country manager Ingrid Cronin-Knight. “Technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and Internetof-Things are creating greater efficiencies and opportunities for farmers. There are now robots that clean silos, drones to count livestock or measure humidity levels, and smartphone operated collars for cows enabling fenceless farming.” Working alongside New Zealand’s rural businesses for more than two decades, MYOB has seen the growing importance of technology across the sector and is dedicated to helping its customers move to cloud technology for all tax, accounting and payroll activity. “As the largest provider of accounting software to the rural sector, MYOB is focused on giving these businesses the next generation of tech tools to help them achieve greater levels of productivity and profitability,” said Ms Cronin-Knight. “Using cloud-based accounting software will give rural business operators the ability to work seamlessly with their accountant from anywhere. It streamlines compliance

3

technology business

and transaction processing, meaning accountants and farmers can focus on activities that drive profitability. It gets them away from all the spreadsheets – less book work and more real work.” Dannevirke accountants MCI and Associates were quick to adopt the latest MYOB technology for their rural-based clients. Principal Neil Ivamy said working with his clients in the cloud allows for greater collaboration, building an even closer relationship between accountant and farmer. “From receiving instant alerts on employee payroll logs, to confirmation on the level of milk they’ve supplied, technology allows our rural clients to get real-time information about their business. “It all comes together to allow the farmer to make instant decisions on how they allocate their resources. And increasingly, all this is being done via smartphones. “When you work from the cloud, everyone is on the same page. When it comes to accounting our clients can call up and query a transaction. We can instantly see what they’re seeing and provide them with advice on the spot. “MYOB’s technology means it is even easier to provide value-added services for more of our clients.” Ivamy said artificial intelligence will allow even greater insights, something MYOB is rolling out to its accounting partners.

“Using good quality information to better manage compliance and transaction processing means we can focus on the things that deliver greater value.” Creating ever-closer relationships between accountants and rural clients is

something MYOB is particularly proud of said Ms Cronin-Knight. “By focusing on providing technology solutions to help businesses succeed we’re playing our part in helping turn farms into tech-enabled businesses.”

Big Sam tells farmers –

‘GiveYourself a Break’

Farmstrong ambassador Sam Whitelock is urging farmers to treat themselves as their farm’s ‘number one asset’ and take regular breaks to prevent burnout and injury.

W

hitelock is the face of the nationwide, rural wellbeing programme which aims to help farmers and their families live well to farm well. Helping local farmers cope with the ups and downs of farming is a topic close to Sam’s heart. He and his wife recently purchased a farm in the region and Sam will resume his farming career in the Bay once his playing days are over. Farmstrong research has highlighted that taking breaks and getting time off farm is the number one issue for farmers coping with the ups and downs of farming. The high profile sportsman leads a busy life himself driven by the demands of the rugby calendar. He’s keen to pass on what’s he’s learnt along the way to farmers, particularly on managing when things are full on. “Taking time off can be as simple as taking that five to ten minutes a couple of times a day to step away from what you’re doing. What I’ve learnt is that when you get

back into things, you’re much fresher and making good decisions. When you’re busy it can be hard to do that. But one of things I’m doing now is planning ten minute slots into my day and sticking to them.” Sam’s says taking mini breaks during the day definitely boost performance in physically and mentally demanding jobs. “Taking time off when you’re busy sounds odd, but I’ve learnt that taking your breaks makes you a lot more efficient and productive. It makes your decision-making simpler. You’re not tired and over thinking things. You achieve better outcomes.” These days, despite a crowded rugby calendar, Sam also schedules longer breaks during the year to recharge his batteries. “The key to making longer breaks possible is to plan them, put them in the calendar and stick to it. I never used to do this and the reality is there’s always another task or a reason not to take a break. “Rugby has taught me that I need to get away from things on a regular basis. I’ve learnt to park everything to the side and

make taking a break a priority. I’ve got a lot better at that.” “I also love getting out with mates outside of rugby and going hunting and fishing. It’s great to plan it in and make it happen.” “Farming and rugby are very similar in that you’ve got to operate to a calendar. It’s hard to take a lot of time of when you’re shearing or calf marking or docking, it’s the same with rugby. But the key is to plan ahead. If I see a bye weekend during the season, sometimes it can be six months in advance, that’s when I lock in a break with my family.” Whitelock says there is a serious side to taking breaks too. “I think there’s definitely a connection between taking breaks and preventing injury on farm. There’s always a list of things as long as your arm to do on a farm but its better to work out a realistic list of things to do in a day.” “When you’re really fatigued that’s when you’ve got to say, ‘that’s enough for today I’ll come back tomorrow fresh and ready

to go,’ rather than pressing ahead. When you’re fatigued you make poor decisions. That’s when accidents happen.” Farmstrong is a rural wellbeing programme that aims to help farmers and farming families live well to farm well. “It’s a big pleasure

of mine showing off the cattle.” By Chrys Ayley

F

Lucy helped a six year old to lead her heifer. It was the youngsters first competition.

or as long as Lucy Collin can remember Charolais have been part and parcel of her life as her parents Simon and Wendy Collin operate Rauriki Charolais in Central Hawke’s Bay. Horses gained her attention for many years and she “did all the disciplines in the horsey world,” but gradually she became more involved with cattle and thoroughly enjoys the whole environment. Showing dad’s Charolais is a great pleasure for Lucy and she regularly can be seen at shows all over the lower North Island. “It’s pretty cool. I do enjoy it, it’s very good fun.” “Cattle were pretty easy to get hooked into,” and Lucy loves promoting the stud name and breed. “I’m very passionate about genetics and the beef industry in New Zealand,” she says. That passion has seen the 21 year-old win numerous awards and last year she gained the title of Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador, which she will relinquish in just a few days at this year’s FBNZ Hoof & Hook. Being named an Allflex Senior Beef Ambassador in 2018 came with a cash prize which she used, along with a scholarship from Charolais Breeders

New Zealand, to travel to Canada for the first time last July. Lucy competed in the Canadian Charolais Youth beef judging and handling competition. While there she was invited to return and spent two months late last year in sub-zero temperatures working with Steppler farms in Miami. In 2017 Lucy had two trips to Australia. The first was a prize she won at the Hawke’s Bay Royal Show which saw her judging stock in Melbourne. A win as herd person at the Christchurch A&P Show saw her compete in Canberra showing an Angus as it was an all breeds show. She won both the stock judging and handling modules and was the only Kiwi amongst 280 competitors. Visiting Australia was an eye opener and Lucy found the atmosphere totally different from New Zealand. She enjoyed seeing different cattle such as Brahmans that enjoy the hot weather. Speckle Parks are more popular in Australia and so are Murray Greys, she says. The scale of events over there is so much larger compared with New Zealand. Unlike many youngsters who start off competing at FBNZ at a junior level Lucy started off in the intermediate class as previously she was involved with equestrian events.

Mother and daughter Wendy and Lucy at the NZ Royal A&P Show, Hawke’s Bay 2018.

“Coming from an equestrian background it’s a whole different environment. The whole showing scene is very different to horses so I enjoy how it’s very sociable, it’s great to see different breeds. It’s always very cool to see how people present the animals. It’s quite an achievement breaking in the cattle beasts that haven’t been handled to being so calm, and going on to win it’s a pretty cool achievement.” Lucy highly recommends the Hoof & Hook event and says it’s an awesome weekend. There are plenty of modules

such as naming fertilisers and tractor parts, building water troughs and lectures about AI and how to scan cows. Then there’s the stock handling and judging: “It’s a Hoof and Hook competition so you can’t get too attached they’re just going to get on the hook and be weighed and measured. It’s a bit sad when you have to say goodbye to them.” Those placed in the top five in the stock judging module are expected to explain their decisions which has significantly improved her public speaking skills. be considered as an Allflex Ambassador participants have to win all their modules and then they are interviewed. In preparation for this year’s Hoof and Hook Lucy is breaking in steers for kids who don’t have their own animals. Ben Dawson of Speckle Park is lending the steers this year. “It’s always good to be able to help out. It’s pretty awesome for a breeder to give up their cattle beast to show.” There are a number of goals Lucy will be aiming for in the next few years. The

first will be to graduate (hopefully) from Massey University later this year with a Bachelor of Arts (Security Studies) majoring in Biosecurity. Then another trip to Canada could be on the cards so she can gain more knowledge especially about genetics and semen. Lucy’s life wouldn’t be complete without building up the numbers in her herd. She received a birthday present of a Charolais cow Silverstream Nessa in calf to Silverstream Geddes. The bull calf has been named Oliver.

“Herefords, for me,

are the ultimate to breed.” By Bruce Donald

I

n 2000 Chrissina and Bruce Donald were offered a lifetime dream of starting their own farming business and buy Ngakouka, a 161ha property on the Ponatahi Valley near Martinborough, in an equity partnership. Ngakouka Hereford Stud was established and Bruce and Chrissina bought half of Bruce’s parents Tarureka herd which consisted of foundation females from Hui Hui, Ngarewa and Braxton studs. Don and Doreen Goodall were instrumental in helping Bruce and Chrissina in this venture. Don was visionary in the initiative to export quality NZ bloodline embryos from Ngakouka to Cascade Herefords in Australia, owned by Karen Arnott. Sadly, Don passed away shortly after the company was established but Ngakouka Herefords continued its relationship with Karen Arnott and Cascade. The A grade embryos of top NZ genetics continued to be sent to Australia. This relationship continued for six years when Ngakouka was sold and the pair set off on another equity partnership in Norsewood in 2006. In 2010 Bruce and Chrissina bought Mironui Station east of Dannevirke in their

own right. The move has proved to be a very positive one. Mironui is 567 ha of which 480 is effective. 20 ha of flats, about 100ha of wheel tractor country and the rest steeper hills. “We’re nicely positioned at the northern end of Tararua’s Puketoi range which supplies us well with rain from all angles spread relatively throughout the year, delivering 1100 to 1200 mls annually. Our location also is right in the Weber wind tunnel, so we are often blow dried whether we like it or not. “It is ideal for breeding genuine hill country bulls that are fit for purpose in the commercial and stud environment of hill country cattle breeders,’ says Bruce. “They are fit and strong.” The Donald’s held their first on farm bull and heifer sale in 2017. “In 2017 we averaged $4900 for 15 bulls and $2100 for the 11 heifers offered which spread from the Wairarapa to Te Kuiti. 2018 sale we sold another 15 bulls which averaged $5500 and 11 heifers averaged $1650 which sold from Northland to Poverty Bay to the Manawatu. This year we have 18 bulls for auction on the 30 May and are aiming to continue the rise in the average sale price.

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2019 “We have 150 stud cows due for calving in the 2019 season and another 23 embryo calves due out of our well proven donors and well sourced national and Australian sires.” “Our selection criteria is uncompromising when buying in sires, or females for that matter. Structure must be bang on, followed by a high IMF figure. Really all other traits and EBV stats can be compromised. Ideally, we like a good milk and scrotal figure as we feel this helps out the maternal breeding side. With these three figures and correct structure, we have a moderate sized animal that handles our tough farming management of hill country. It will perform when required, and ultimately taste great at the end.” “Cows and heifers scanned dry are culled and have been for years, which is paying dividends today. On 8/4/2019 we scanned 1.8% dry in our 2 year heifers and mixed age cows who are joined and grazed together from when the bull goes out. Six weeks after calving the 2 year heifers are part of the MA Cow mob. Hack it or head off,” says Bruce. The couple DNA profile all of the annual calf drops which guarantees parentage and gives a polled horned status and firms up the actual Breedplan data the industry is used to.“We also DNA test for tenderness gene markers in all of our sires. This test will correlate to IMF and fats when enough animals are recorded worldwide. These tests help us and bull buying clients buy and breed with confidence that we leave no stone unturned and supply as much data as possible to ensure that the

9

animals consistently perform where ever they go. To the best of our measures, they are what the stats say. Data is simply that, we use all scientific measures available to provide us with selection options after the visual assessments have been checked off. We are one of very few in NZ that use this form of science in our breeding programme.” “Herefords, for me, are the ultimate to breed. Not only are we striving to breed the great shape animal with high yielding carcasses that can effortlessly grow out on hill country, but we also make the maternal herd perform behind sheep year in and year out. The cosmetics are the extra challenge which makes it more difficult. I’ve worked with most other breeds of cattle and nothing touches Herefords for docility and all round performance, plus the red and white looks great against a green farmland background. The breeders are also just as neat as the cattle are to work with.”

Exploring the financial benefits

of cross breeding

By Trish Syme

J

Nick, Claire and Florence Syme.

Top Genetics Producing Top Results

im and Trish Syme purchased Hiwiroa, a 150ha rolling hill country farm in the Flemington District of Central Hawkes Bay in 1979. They also leased a neighbouring farm until last year. Hiwiroa Shorthorns was formed in 2005 when 27 registered shorthorns were purchased. Early on a unique and special association with Timothy Plummer and Tahuna Shorthorns began. Jim was new to shorthorns and Timothy was wishing to semi-retire. An unwritten partnership began, each stud retaining their own identity but farmed as one. Some cows still retain the Tahuna prefix. Shorthorns originated from Durham in England but the name is a bit of a misnomer as most are now polled, Jim says. “They were one of the first breeds to New Zealand and have been used in the development of a number of breeds including Murray Grey, Santa Gertrudis and Speckle Park. We think they complement any breed and with the hybrid vigour gained as well as the great maternal qualities of the shorthorn they have a lot to offer beef producers.

Jim and Trish have three adult children, James who after completing a Food Technology Degree at Massey University, went on his OE, meet his wife Aisling and resides in the UK with their daughter Aoife. Anna is a veterinarian and lives with her husband Teri and two children in Auckland. Nick and his wife Claire are now farming in partnership with Jim and Trish. Claire who is originally from Havelock North has really immersed herself in the farming lifestyle as well as looking after their seven month old daughter Florence. The recent purchase of an additional 180ha hill country property in the Porangahau District is a highlight for the family allowing them to run mixed aged cows on genuine hill country. Trish is particularly happy because she is back in the district she grew up in. Close behind are her two Auckland grandchildren Asha, who is horse crazy, and Alby aged 8 who wants to be a farmer and complains that no one at his school can talk farming! “We aim to build our cow herd up to 100 head. This year we have 13 embryo calves arriving, having flushed one of our best cows from a proven family. Our rising one

year heifers are looking promising and we should be able to add increased numbers to the herd next mating,” says Nick. “For several years we have been focussing on breeding a strong maternal animal with premium carcass qualities. To achieve this we aim for breed average or below birth weight, positive calving ease, and breed average or above growth, EMA, Fats and IMF. Our move to positive fats has improved the ability of our cattle to perform when conditions are not so favourable. Our improved EMA is giving us higher carcase weight with improved yield,” Jim says. Our cows run with our commercial sheep flock and at times are not top priority, so have to earn their keep. Because of this we believe we have a more robust

11

animal that has earned its place to remain in the herd. We calve our heifers as 2 year olds which puts pressure on their calving ease. It also puts pressure on fertility as they have to get back in calf as three year olds to remain in the herd, these are two key drivers of profitability. We have just confirmed the arrival of semen from a new Australian bull Yamburgan Gigabytes who will further tick these boxes for us. We also purchased a semen share in the top priced shorthorn bull in NZ for the 2018 year, Hinewaka Balance and look forward to these calves arriving in spring. Why should you try one of our shorthorn bulls? We believe the financial benefits of cross breeding have not been

given the exposure it deserves. Shorthorns compliment all other breeds and the 1st cross progeny we believe will outperform both parents. Nothing is lost as the 1st cross heifers will prove to be great mothers when crossed back to your base breed. “In our sire battery we have the shortest gestation shorthorn bull in New Zealand Hiwiroa Patriach 14044. This has been confirmed in the Beef and Lamb Dairy Progeny Trial. We have semen available from this bull,” Jim says. The Hiwiroa Shorthorn bull auction is held in the Flemington Hall next to the school. Buyers can inspect the bulls on farm and then attend a video showing and auction in the hall. The bulls can be inspected any time.

Mt Mable vista

Lot 32 a, 1771.

80 YEARS NEW

t Mable Angus Stud was established at Ohura, King Country, in 1967 by Allen and Maisie Friel, with the majority of foundation stock acquired from the renowned Puketutu Stud. Kevin their son, and Megan his wife, took over the stud in 1997. They relocated the stud to Pukerimu Station, Norsewood in 2008. This move was undertaken to provide better accessibility to the stud and to ensure more options for secondary schooling for the children. Mt Mable cattle have been tested on steep, wet King Country hills for over 40 years. The selection pressure of the higher altitudes of Pukerimu and the sometimes extreme winter climate have ensured that Mt Mable Cattle shift to all environments and continue to excel. Kevin and Megan ran the 2200 acre Pukerimu Station by themselves with only casual and occasional part time help – with a health scare affecting Megan in 2015 and reaching their 50’s a decision was made to downsize the farming operation and sell the sheep flock – this was done reluctantly as the romdale sheep flock was a result of 50 years careful breeding. In 2016 the cow herd and the family then moved to a 650 acre property south of Dannevirke in the Kumeroa farming district. The property has a good mix of hill country for the cows and good flats where the bulls can be brought on slowly which

has been their tradition for the last 20 years or so. The highest point of the property is 550 metres above sea level. Only those heifers that have proven themselves and have the attributes desired are introduced into the herd. The cow herd is rigorously culled on performance and conformation. All cows are expected to rear an exceptional calf, get back in calf and return to good condition every year – no exceptions. The weather is on average 5 degrees warmer in Kumeroa than Norsewood – as a result the calving date has been put back as the cattle seem to grow that much faster than in the mountains at Norsewood. This is not a bad thing as the Kumeroa soils are heavier and the farm gets more than a fair share of rain (apart from this summer which has been very dry). A large drainage project was undertaken with Blackley Construction on the flats last summer. The young-stock do not suffer the severe weather related checks to their growth pattern that occurred after weaning and again during spring storms and snow falls at Norsewood. Kevin and Megan believe in breeding cattle based on lines of pedigree and years of family performance rather than relying heavily on a computer generated breeding estimate. Most Mt Mable cow lines trace back to the original Puketutu cattle and other old New Zealand lines that were originally entered into the Breedplan

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2019 system at very low values – unless newer, mostly imported, genetics with well above average, and highly accurate data are introduced into the herd, or progeny, which regularly become outliers, are being produced, the estimated breeding values for the cows appears to move at glacial pace – while some stud breeders have culled out their old cows in favour of “genetic turnover”, and seemingly a race for higher and higher EBV’s – nothing gives the Friel’s more pleasure than the reliability of multi-generational cows that every year produce sale quality bulls, or heifers that enter the herd. A comprehensive three year guarantee on their sale bulls, which is very rarely called upon, apparently vindicates this confidence in their selection and breeding criteria. Kevin and Megan continually assess their own, and other breeders’ programmes, and cattle, to validate their breeding decisions and position with regard to this stance and seek feedback from all bull buyers annually. Mt Mable bull buyers are always telling the Friel’s to keep doing the same thing – although they, like the Friel’s, are looking for the cattle to be continually improving – actual improvement that is – not graphs and charts. Usually outside sire bulls are sourced from studs with the same breeding philosophies as Mt Mable however, the recent introduction of a very popular and heavily used NZ bred calving ease bull for the heifer mating programme will give bull buyers something to think about – this bull’s cattle have data which is very

impressive – whether this year’s bull buyers think that the two year old bulls for sale this year are that much more impressive than traditionally bred Mt Mable bulls will be an very interesting aspect of sale day. When asked, Kevin and Megan have this to say about the continued success of their bull sales “the key selling points of our bulls are temperament, easy fleshing, fertility, functionality and they are generally nice animals to have around – more than one new client has remarked about how much they enjoy handling their young stock sired by our bulls – no more broken rails in the yards or wrecked fences. What you see is what you will get with our bulls – over 50 years of consistent breeding will do that”.

In praise of Hoof and Hook

By Chrys Ayley

T

he Future Beef New Zealand executive committee are in full swing organising this year’s Hoof and Hook event. One dedicated committee member is Hamish Grant who has been on the committee since 2016. Hamish works in customer service at PGG Wrightson in Waipukurau and thoroughly enjoys the work as it brings him into contact with people but also has the strong rural connection. Launched in 2006, Future Beef New Zealand (FBNZ) was created to re-ignite youth involvement in the beef industry and to educate young people about the beef industry along with developing skills and knowledge. Hamish first became involved with Hoof and Hook in 2012. This is a weekend that involves young people from age 8 to 24 in a series of stock judging, parade instruction and educational modules. Youngsters from all walks of life are encouraged to take part, Hamish says. This year Hoof and Hook is being held at the Solway Showgrounds in Masterton for the first time. Raised on his grandparents’ sheep and beef farm in Taupo until he was ten Hamish then moved with his family to Havelock North. Farming became a distant memory as he left college and went to work in a menswear store.

“In 2012 I started getting a niggle to go back to the farm so I enrolled at Taratahi over at Taradale.” He really enjoyed the course and completed L3 and L4 of the National Certificate in Agriculture. As part of the course Hamish competed in Hoof and Hook in 2012. “Nick of Hiwiroa Shorthorns supplied us the cattle and he was mentor for the class of 2012.” Hamish showed with Nick right through to 2015 with Hiwiroa providing the animals each year. Several positions followed including shepherding for Cooch Higgins at Brancott Farm in the Waiwhare district although Hamish returned to Hoof and Hook every year and won the Maungaraki Rising Star Award in 2013. “Everyone is there for the same thing, learning about the industry, making interesting connections, having fun, making friends and meeting new people.” This year as a committee member he’s helping plan the 2019 Hoof and Hook event. Part of his duties include organising and breaking in the cattle for students who don’t have access to their own. Andrew Stewart of Whenuapapa Angus, Kereru is supplying animals for approximately eight young people this year. “ It would be hard to run without the support of farmers and industry.” “It’s a huge weekend. It’s such an honour for kids to win these prestigious awards and to be recognised in the industry. Lots of

Hamish showing Rauriki Nelson N7 at the Dannevirke Show earlier this year.

former competitors come out to help and many have great careers in the industry.” Hamish enjoys the beef industry, the passion of those involved, and the direction the industry is taking. He acknowledges that it’s a competitive environment and that

there are constantly new developments in for example, genetics and technology. He’s keen for New Zealand to continue to push grass fed beef and believes that in spite of “fake meat” posing a threat the industry is in a great position to rise to the challenge.

Millstone Red Devons

By Heughan and Carol Gordon

T

he farm is 260ha of coastal hill country south of Havelock North, with 10ha flat at the front, 50ha steep faces rising to the balance of medium hill with some cultivatable area at the top. The soils are free draining, limestone based on the top 200ha with wetter clay based soil in the front. The altitude is from 100m at the road to 320m and rainfall is variable but averages 1000-1200mm. We shifted to Hawke’s Bay in 2009 from Pahiatua where we farmed for six years, prior to that we were farming next to the family farm in Taihape. Before transitioning to Red Devons we had a commercial herd of around 100 cows with Angus bulls used, the poor temperament and difficulty in yarding and handling yearlings prompted the switch to Red Devons. As Red Devon numbers increased the commercial cows were phased out with the last going in 2013. Millstone Red Devon Stud was established with the initial 30 heifers coming from Graeme Dyke who we met whilst farming in Pahiatua. More females were added from Kevin Fletcher and Wayne Aspin, with stud sires sourced from Te Maewa, Woodlands, Manu and Tinopai studs along with home bred sires.

Red Devons are renowned for their docility which makes them a pleasure to work with in the yards and tagging and weighing at calving presents no issues, even with heifers. In addition the smaller frame size of mature cows make them suited to hill country and they perform well on poor quality pastures with high carcase yields. The New Zealand Red Devon Cattle Breeders Association does its performance recording with PBBNZ in Feilding which gives members who use this facility the ability to produce EBV’s that relate to New Zealand cattle grown in New Zealand conditions. This year Millstone has 113 in calf females (R2 heifers and cows) recorded with PBB for birth weight, 200, 400 and 600 day weights. We have 20 R2 bulls for private sale this season, all have EBV’s available and are BVD vaccinated and tested clear. They will be available from mid-May once 600 day weights are loaded. The NZ Red Cattle Breeders Association is a small association with many lifestyle breeders and it has been a challenge to get more breeders to performance record even though the association pays costs for this service. I encourage all breeders to utilise this service as the more animals that are recorded, the more accurate and meaningful is the data produced.

Millstone Red Devons

The lack of performance data available from some breeders has meant it has been harder to find quality, proven sires for my own use and AI has produced mixed results to date. This may be the main challenge going forward, especially in light of the recent Bovis concerns. Whilst the popularity of Angus is on a high at the moment and black store stocks seem to be getting premiums in the yards, there is a place for Red Devon. Crossbred

progeny are solid coloured, have hybrid vigour, are generally easy calving and an improvement in temperament is noticeable in first cross animals. As with other breeds there have been issues around the use of overseas AI bulls, unproven in New Zealand conditions, and the resulting undesirable traits being exhibited, however buying from an Association member who records performance reduces this risk.

stablished in 1988, the Waikite Simmental herd is located on 1,013 ha of rolling to steep hill country in the heart of the Waikite Valley, 30km from Taupo. The herd consists of 360 recorded cows plus replacement heifers and is run under commercial conditions. Cows are required to be good mothers and wean healthy early maturing calves while receiving no special favours. “Milk production is a key component to achieving optimum weights at weaning” says stud manager Peter Strawbridge. “I cannot understate the importance of having a good maternal emphasis in your herd, especially when you want to optimize weaner growth through to finishing”. The studs breeding objectives are to breed the best possible terminal beef sires that offer maximum growth and carcass potential while maintaining a strong emphasis on calving ease and maternal productivity. The stud recognises the importance of performance recording and objective measurement to make informed breeding decisions and partners with Focus Genetics to ensure that genetic gain in these key traits is achieved. This approach has been reflected in the Simmental April 2019

Kerrah Simmentals - a balanced package By Chrys Ayley

K

errah Simmentals, based at Tangiwai Station, is run by Jon Knauf and his wife Sam along with their four children Josh 22, Lauren 20, Tessa 17, Ben 14 and Jon’s mother Colleen. Alaistair Milne, formerly of Ailsa Simmentals, is a close friend and also has input into the direction of the stud. Tangiwai Station is a 2000Ha hill country property rising from 500 to 2400 feet above sea level. It is situated 32km north of Wairoa on the boundary of Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne districts. The station was purchased in 1994 by Kevin and Colleen Knauf and the Kerrah stud was formed in 2005. After some time overseas Jon and Sam returned to Tangiwai from England in 1998. Tangiwai Station is positioned in a micro climate where large rain events are common with an annual rainfall between 2100 and 2850 mm per year. Often with two months of the year recording in excess of 500mls of rain. The extreme climatic conditions and steep terrain ensure Kerrah Simmentals will excel in any farm the bulls are shifted to. Simmentals was the breed of choice after analysis of widespread cross breeding in the commercial herd at Tangiwai, something which has recently been

validated in the NZ beef and lamb progeny test involving the majority of breeds. The aim of Kerrah Simmentals is to produce bulls that are a balanced package consisting of calving ease, high rate of weight gain, easy finishing, good doing cattle, true to the dual purpose origin of the breed, with a quiet nature. In order to achieve these aims the Kerrah herd is run on true hill country conditions with all heifers calved as 2 year olds and fully recorded including docility scored and from next year all sale bulls will be DNA tested for parentage and genomically enhanced EBVS. As a breeding program they are focussed on where they need to be in 10 years-time as changing traits takes time. Last June Kerrah Simmentals were named the PGG Wrightson Steak of Origin Grand Champion at the National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek. “For Simmental, a European breed, to win, when Angus and other breeds have done so well in the past, is fantastic,” Colleen said. Kerrah Simmentals had the formline, having over the previous six years been a regular among the finalists, including their first Best of Breed European title three years ago. “Genetics is important,” says Jon, describing how the result was finally achieved. “The win shows what we have

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2019 always knwn-that the difference within breeds is greater than the difference between them. I think the key for farmers is to combine the best of two or three breeds with hybrid vigour to maximise on farm production and profitability. Kerrah Simmentals tries to incorporate intramuscular fat and docility in sire selections- two key traits for a good eating experience.” This year on the 21 May at 1pm Kerrah Simmentals will offer approximately 80 quality, predominately polled, performance Simmental bulls on farm at Tangiwai Station. The bulls are selected from 250 bull calves all born in September or October. Buyers are mix of maternal and terminal users from Kaitaia to Queenstown. Kerrah Simmentals offers free transport to the value of $200 or to one of the following destinations Hamilton, Te Kuiti, Feilding or Wanganui. Kerrah bred progeny are keenly sought after at sale yards and in paddock sales as store stock, with clients who kill the progeny seeing noticeable increases in carcass weight and reduced days to turn off. Quite often the wishes of the client are overlooked but to us it’s important that we understand your breeding program, your goals, your farm, and aspirations before deciding which bull suit. So to aid in bull selection Kerrah has recommendations in the catalogue as to what purpose the bull is best suited eg terminal, maternal or heifer mating use.

T

hat made you look, didn’t it? This occupational option is perfectly legal and you can do it in the privacy of your own farm. Get out and have a long hard look at the cows. Please. It doesn’t matter how well-bred your bulls are or how well they passed their service capacity test in winter, the fact is that every spring many local sire bulls will fail to deliver the expected pregnancies for their girlfriends. And you can make a difference-not necessarily to the bull but you can make a difference to your scanning result. Please spend time observing your sire bulls at work, it is that simple. Either end of the day is best, especially in warmer weather, when the cattle are likely to be more active. Watch the young bulls and check the older, proven bulls too. Make notes if necessary and follow up the next day if you are unsure about the ability of any particular animal. Even if you are happy enough to continue using that bull, make a note about which cows he went to so we can consider that at scanning. If we know which mob you had concerns about, we can fetal age pregnancies to confirm his ability, even if he was backed up by another bull.

What to watch for? The most common comment we get is that “I was worried about him as he was never with the cows.” The bull isn’t giving much away but if he was proven in previous years then he may just be saving his energy. But if he is lying down, make sure he gets up and shows you that he isn’t lame. What are his cows doing? They can give you a big signal if the bull is surrounded by on-heat cows yet is not mounting or showing any interest. If he is away across the paddock, is he trying to avoid another more dominant bull in his paddock or is he trying to get to the next mob of cows and ignoring his cows? Social and physical dominance are really big issues for bulls, as that is how they live their lives. Unfortunately it is also often to blame for poor scanning results, especially when bulls are mob-mated. If you run a new, young bull with an older bull to cover say 70 cows, don’t be surprised if the young guy hardly gets a look in. But be worried that if the big bull doesn’t work well your scanning may turn out real shabby. It happens way more often than you would think- we see the results every autumn. Look closer too. If he is attempting to mate but appears to miss the connection, get in position to see what is happening. Observant stockmen will often notice a bull with a corkscrew penis or a broken penis (haematoma) early in the season and quickly organise back up sires to replace

Make sure your bulls are in the best possible condition this year. Get them tested, and ensure they are in optimal health come mating time!!

a difference!

the affected bull. Some bulls with penis injuries will keep trying in frustration while others head off on their own and sulk. Be anthropomorphic if you must. If in doubt, please ring us for some advice. There is usually very little that we can do to fix the issue immediately (you will need to rearrange your existing bull power or quickly source replacements) but a lame bull needs attending and insured bulls will need a vet visit and certification. It is much more “pleasant” to be involved with bull issues during

mating, if we must, than to be unravelling the issues at scanning when, to be honest, many of the poor results can be easily worked out with based on some dodgy history. And remember that scanning is a very valuable tool that we can use to work out how individual bulls performed but we need a bit of warning so we get the timing right- we may even need to scan suspect mobs at bull removal in some cases, before the cows get all boxed up again. Be a peeping tom, please.

Simple beef ramen bowl

Hailing from Japan, this hot culinary trend is popular for a reason. Quick and easy to prepare, this vegetable packed beef stock is loaded with flavour. A creative, fun dish where you can encourage everyone at the table to add their own miso and beef. Prep: 25 mins Cook: 15 mins Serves 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

• • • • •

300-400g Quality Mark beef sirloin steak 2 litres good quality beef stock 270g ramen noodles 2 teaspoons sesame oil 4 medium-sized eggs, at room temperature 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 100g shiitake mushrooms, left whole if small 200g button mushrooms, wiped clean and sliced 1 cup frozen corn kernels, optional Light soy sauce to season, if needed 4 baby bok choy, cut in half lengthwise and steamed until tender 3 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced 4 teaspoons naturally fermented white miso paste

Method

Place the beef stock in a saucepan and place over low heat.

Cook the ramen noodles in boiling water for 4 minutes. Drain well, then toss through the sesame oil to prevent noodles sticking. Place the eggs in boiling water and boil for 6 minutes for runny yolks. Drain and run under the cold tap, then remove their shells. Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and cook until lightly coloured. Add the corn and mix to combine. To serve: slice the sirloin as thinly as you can and divide between 4 small dishes. Turn up the heat on the beef stock so it is steaming-hot. Taste and season with soy sauce and salt and pepper, if needed. Divide the ramen noodles between 4 warmed ramen bowls or large soup bowls. Pour in the steaming-hot beef stock, then add the mushrooms, corn and bok choy. Cut the eggs in half and add to each bowl, topping with spring onions. Serve each bowl of beef stock with a teaspoon of miso paste to stir through for that delicious umami flavour. Each person then has their own dish of thinly sliced beef to add to their ramen bowl. Dip and swirl the beef pieces into the broth. If cut very thin the beef will change colour. Eat and repeat until you have had enough.

Roast Scotch fillet of beef with mushroom sauce & roast potatoes

Preparation time: 15 mins Cook: 50 mins + resting time Serves 6

Ingredients

• 750g piece Quality Mark beef Scotch fillet • 2 teaspoons horseradish cream • 2 teaspoons mustard • 2 teaspoons brown sugar

Mushroom Sauce • • • • • •

1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic ½ cup port or medium-sweet sherry 1 cup beef stock 4 portobello mushrooms, chopped 220g can Wattie’s Mushrooms in Butter Sauce

Roast Potatoes

• 6 small to medium starchy (roasting) potatoes • 2-4 tablespoons oil

Method

Brown the Scotch fillet on all sides in a dash of oil in a hot frying pan. Transfer to a chopping board. Mix together the horseradish cream, mustard and brown sugar and spread

this mixture on the top and sides of the meat. Place on a foil-lined baking tray. Place in 220°C oven and then turn down immediately to 200°C and roast for 40 minutes. Set aside to rest for 10 minutes before carving and serving with mushroom sauce, roast potatoes and freshly steamed vegetables.

Mushroom Sauce

Cook the onion in a dash of oil in a saucepan over a moderate heat for about 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute. Stir in the port or sherry and simmer until reduced by half. Add the beef stock, chopped mushrooms and mushroom sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes.

Roast Potatoes

Peel the potatoes and place in boiling salted water. Bring to the boil and boil for 5 minutes. Drain and return to the saucepan. Shake the potatoes over the heat to rough up the outside edges. Alternatively, use a fork to score the outside of the potatoes, so that the edges are rough. Roll the potatoes in the oil so that they are evenly coated and place on a baking tray. Cook at 200°C for 15-20 minutes until golden.

Boehringer Ingelheim World

Hereford Conference 2020

T

hree years ago, a large contingent of Kiwi Hereford breeders attended the World Hereford Conference in Uruguay and heard Bruce Robertson pitch for the 2020 World Hereford Conference. With the financial support of Tourism New Zealand and Bruce’s natural ability to tell a good story, the Kiwis left the conference with the knowledge that the next one would be held in our backyard. Now with only a year to go, the tempo is heating up. With Queenstown being a favourite tourist destination, the two hotels of choice, due to their accessibility and conference room size (the Millennium and Copthorne), have had bedrooms and conference rooms on hold since 2017, and the gala dinner at Walter Peak has been booked since 2018. The conference will start with an opening reception on Monday 9 March in the conference room at the Millennium. We hope every country will adopt the international theme by wearing something that identifies them from their home country. So, dust off that black jersey in the cupboard! The first full day of the conference will be filled with country reports and technical sessions. However, with the requirement to be at the wharf at 5.30pm to catch the historic Earnslaw to Walter Peak for the

gala dinner, it will not be a long day in the conference room. The gala dinner will be an optional extra to attend; however we hope that it will be well supported and the weather will be kind to us. Wednesday will be spent on a field day to Locharburn and Earnscleugh Hereford Studs, courtesy of the Brown and Campbell families. We are looking forward to hearing from a range of speakers and influencers, including Pablo Gregorini and the Lincoln research team exploring Hereford behaviour on high country, and genomic testing and its opportunities from Neogen and Allflex international speakers. We’ll be back into the conference room Thursday morning to expand our farming knowledge, with the afternoon free to explore Queenstown and the numerous attractions. The conference will travel to the Wanaka A&P Show on Friday, to support the Young Breeders Competition, watch the cattle judging, and enjoy the many attractions the Wanaka Show has to offer. In addition to the conference, the North Island pre-tour and the South Island posttour are on offer. NZHA is grateful to all the studs involved and we look forward to showcasing them in next year’s Hereford magazine prior to the conference. The committee spent many hours over the past

year to reach an agreed balance between showing off a number of studs and keeping the driving distance manageable, as well as including some tourist attractions along the way. The Young Breeders competition is looking likely to be a highlight of the conference, with the teams (four team members from each country) involved in an action-packed week. Unless you opt to stay at the backpackers with them, you will only see them during the country reports, gala dinner and at the Wanaka Show. For more information visit: www.nzwhc.co.nz.

Guests will be transported across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Station on the TSS Earnslaw for the gala dinner.

his year, thanks to two forward thinking stock agents, the King Country will hold the inaugural all breeds bull sale week from May 27 to May 31. This follows on from open days held over three days earlier in May. Joining forces to promote all breeds during a specific time span was the brain child of PGG Wrightson Stud Stock Rep/ Auctioneer Cam Heggie and Brent Bougen NZ Farmers Livestock Agent. The pair, despite working for different companies, could see the benefit of King Country breeders joining forces, cooperating and working together to promote all breeds. They called a meeting with breeders to discuss combining forces to make it easier for buyers to be attracted to view their stock. Breeders were encouraged to give their input as to how they could see it working and many signed up to the concept of working as a team. Breeders participating are spread over a wide area from Te Awamutu in the north down as far as Taumarunui. “It’s a unique opportunity for people to come to one area and cater for their genetic requirements,” says Cam. For those travelling to the King Country they could stay at Te Kuiti and then Taumarunui and they’d be able to cover all the sales.

Raupuha Shorthorns.

“We’ll be selling across seven breeds from 13 studs and approximately 330 bulls will be sold in that time. It’s great opportunity for people that buy multiple breeds to buy an Angus as a maternal sire and perhaps a Simmental or Charolais as their terminal,” Cam said.

For over 80yrs Hingaia bulls have been standing up to the demands of the industry

The range of bulls for sale include Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Shorthorns, Simmentals, Speckled Parks and South Devons. Sale week coordinator, Tracey Neal of Potawa Simmental Stud in Pio Pio, has been a central contact point for the breeders. Tracey started off as a minute

secretary and since then her voluntary job has grown like topsy. She’s responsible for communication, advertising and promotion and all the administrative jobs that happen behind the scenes. It was quite an achievement to get all the breeders together. There was plenty of team work and some give and take as some breeders had to change their planned day and time so the roster of sales could work, she said. “We don’t know of anywhere else in the country where quite literally all these different breeders with different breeds have come together with this level of cooperation.” They are aiming to emulate the East Coast Angus Bull Week, which for many is a key event in the buying calendar. “If our sale encourages people to come from other areas then that’s all for the good.” “We could see the purpose and benefits behind cooperating and even if we have differences between what we think is the best beef animal, we are all beef breeders and so it’s to our benefit to get as many good bulls out there as possible.” “Hopefully there’s a client for every bull and a bull for every client. There’s something for everybody,” Tracey said.
