A perfect Hawke’s Bay

wedding

T

he couple first met about eight years ago at a prerugby sevens party hosted by friends and whilst it wasn’t quite love at first sight it was definitely “like at first sight,” Christie says. Their relationship was long distance for a while as Tyson was working in Moteuka but when he returned to Wellington they moved in together. “The rest is history,” Christie says. Christie manages two branches for ASB and Tyson is a Project Manager for a signage company. Their family grew to include Cooper, their adored “fur baby” who was a special guest at their wedding. The couple were engaged in November 2017 and soon after booked Church Road as their wedding venue. Even then there were already quite a few bookings around the date they had selected. The couple had fallen in love with Hawke’s Bay when they visited

Christie’s parents who relocated here several years ago. “The weather is much more reliable than Wellington!” “Church Road was beautiful. We wanted a massive relaxed, fun, cruisy party with everyone that we loved being there.”With 100 guests they wanted to ensure there was plenty of room for guests to mingle. The field where they held the ceremony was “perfect” and what sold it to them was the plan B option if it rained. While Christie and Tyson planned a relaxed day they still found themselves getting caught up in the moment. Their advice is to spend some quiet time together throughout the day. “You need time to take it all in,” says Christie and Tyson agrees. Tyson’s advice? “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Having their “first look” photos taken before the ceremony was extremely special and this also

allowed them to spent more quality time with their guests and get the party started immediately after the ceremony. They chose Eva Bradley and Andrew Caldwell to photograph the day. Tyson wanted a beach location for the photos and Christie preferred Esk Valley so they covered both locations! Christie wanted a relaxed, rustic feel to the day and chose a “bridal surprise” from her florist. She outlined her theme-rust, green and gum leaves and loved the end results. Similar floral arrangements decorated the reception venue. Do they have any special memories of their day? “The first look photos for me were probably the most special part. Our bridal party was there watching from a distance and I did a sneak peek with dad. It was nice for him to see me for the first time, along with bridesmaids,”

Christie says. Tyson says “Seeing Christie for the first time and it just being us two was really special and my favourite moment of the day.” Christie stresses the need for a complete and relaxing break after the wedding. They slept for two days after the big day! “You don’t realise how emotionally draining it is,” she says. They both agree that the best part is knowing that at the end of the day, even if things go wrong, the most important people, your loved ones, are there to help you celebrate. A special thank you to Christie and Tyson Laws, and Eva Bradley and Andrew Cardwell of Eva Bradley Photography, for allowing us to share these special memories.

Search for the

perfect dress W

here is the wedding being held? Beach, church or country – this dictates to a certain extent the style and choice of fabric. Finding the perfect wedding dress may take you on a search of many different options, whether you buy, hire, make, borrow, inherit or have it custom designed. Bridal fashion trends change over time and right now the runways showing 2020 collections feature floral print dresses, classic ball gowns, ruffles, puffy sleeves, pants, one shoulder necklines and even short dresses. Then of course there’s bling, glitz and glamour. Having a gown designed and made just for you is the ultimate in individuality, but it will cost you more. Your designer will want to discuss ideas and styles, as well as what suits you and your personality.

YOUR CHANCE TO BE A PRINCESS FOR THE DAY Beautiful wedding dresses are available ‘off the peg’ at specialist bridal shops. As well as New Zealand designs, many are imported, so allow adequate time for the dress you select to be ordered from overseas. With a wonderful range of styles to try before you buy, your dream dress might be right there on the rack! Once chosen your gown can be expertly fitted and altered if necessary. Your wedding gown need not be traditional style, colour or price. Look at ball gowns, cocktail outfits and maxi dresses for something a little bit different. There are plenty of choices to explore.

Beautiful bridesmaids W

hile you may head for bridal shops and designers to source outfits for your girlfriends there are plenty of other places to look. You will certainly find signature bridesmaid collections while you are looking for your own bridal gown. But, if you don’t want to buy bridesmaid dresses that may only be worn once you can also look at hiring them and getting them individually fitted. Don’t forget shops that stock dresses for evening wear, formals and balls, which are often pleasantly affordable. Choose styles and colours to flatter the size and body shape of your bridesmaids, they’ll love you for it. Pick something they will all love, feel good in and look good.

The location of the wedding and style will give you some idea as to what might be suitable, especially when thinking of colour. Don’t forget that comfort also comes into the equation as they need to wear the dress for a large part of the day, look good, and be able to dance with relative freedom. The choices are endless with the same colour dresses but different styles or same styles in different colours. Choosing the same style means you’ll have to be careful that it suits all the bridesmaids who probably have varying body shapes, sizes and colouring. Don’t forget about lingerie to suit the dress too. For example, will they need strapless bras? Finally shoes and jewellery to match will put the gorgeous finishing touches to your bridesmaids.

Contemporary cakes &

beverages

Sweet treats Traditionally the wedding cake symbolizes good fortune and fertility and brings good luck to everyone who eats it. TV shows featuring amazing wedding cakes have become very popular which might go some way to explain why the wedding cake is still seen as an important part of the day. Options are as broad as the imagination these days and could be round, square, stacked, cupcakes, a nude cake, a fruity theme or perhaps something to match your shared interests? There are some excellent cake

designers in Hawke’s Bay who are only too happy to discuss your ideas and offer samples for the allimportant taste test. Most of them will also have a portfolio of photos and a website for you to view a range of their work. Practical considerations include the number of guests and whether the cake will be served as dessert. After the meal, the bride and groom traditionally make the first cut of the cake together. This first piece is shared between the couple with the groom feeding the bride first, then the bride feeding the groom. Then it’s shared with guests during the reception.

KALLDEEN LUXURY ACCOMMODATION

Alcohol & beverages It would be unusual for a wedding to be alcohol free but not totally unknown. Some do choose a dry wedding while others serve alcohol free options such as mocktails. For those who go a more traditional route there’s some planning involved, especially if doing your own catering. During the wedding preparations it’s common for brides and grooms to have a toast- bubbly for the girls and either beer or spirits

for the men. Planning consumption per head at the main event is a good way to go and caterers can give advice on average quantities consumed covering the whole event. During the planning stage include a realistic amount in your budget as it can quickly mount up. Wine is generally served with the meal, both white and red and guests may be given the option of an open bar, a limited bar or a cash bar. Make sure there are options for non-drinkers too.

Kalldeen is a luxury private retreat in the Hawke’s Bay offering a unique feeling of being in the country, though only 5 minutes to world class wineries and 10 minutes to Napier City. All rooms have private access for you to come and go as you please and are designed to ensure you relax and enjoy, the chalets have expansive decks each with a Spa pool and sun loungers. Tesla charging stations are also available on the premises. Spoil yourself & come for a romantic stay. Check out the website and book or email direct.

D

eciding on a catering budget stresses the need to have a plan and an overall budget for all expenditure on your big day. The food and beverage costs will consume a large part of your budget so it needs careful thought and planning. Beyond your budget your decision will be based on a number of factors: the wedding venue and location, your personal preference and theme of the wedding, the number of guests and the time of day and the season the wedding is taking place. The number of guests is also a vital consideration so at the beginning take time to review who you are inviting and why. High end venues generally offer an in-house catering service along with a wedding coordinator to liaise with to discuss all the options and menus. Your choices might include sit down plated meals, buffet style meals, grazing tableswhich are especially popular for starting the wedding meal, and dessert buffets. Don’t forget to ask about options for children and those with special dietary requirements when discussing menus. When guest arrive at the reception venue there are generally alcohol

and nibbles available while the bride and groom mingle with their guests. This is the time when often the bride and groom disappear for a photo session which could be quite lengthy so be sure to provide adequate food and some sort of entertainment including games to keep the guests amused. If you have photographers, DJs and others helping then it’s thoughtful to also provide them with a meal.

For those organising much of the wedding themselves, including catering, there are plenty of choices such as hiring an independent catering company, barbeques by professional caterers and hiring a food truck. More laid back weddings might suit a casual barbeque and dining alfresco. You might consider having a wedding in the morning or early

Weddings at Meadowood If you want to say ‘I do’ at a venue that’s just that little bit different, then you need to look at Meadowood House. Meadowood is the only venue in Hawke’s Bay with a tipi marquee on site, allowing you to create a unique wedding from a stunning backdrop. Talk to us today for more information on this boho-chic Hawke’s Bay venue and to arrange a viewing.

afternoon which would give you the option of offering breakfast or brunch, a grand high tea or even a cocktail party. While weddings are traditionally held on a Saturday during the summer another way that could help reduce costs is to have a wedding either mid-week or offpeak. There are likely to be some savings to be had.

Symbols of love & thanks W

edding rings are a symbol of endless love - no beginning and no end. They form a very significant part of the ceremony and are a visible sign you are in a committed relationship. At the engagement stage few couples give thought to the wedding rings, but it makes good sense to have an idea of the wedding ring when shopping for the engagement ring. The rings should fit well together on the finger and complement each other. Most choose the same metals, but yellow and white gold look chic depending on the design. Recently brides have been opting for just one ring but whatever you choose remember it’s a sign of your love and commitment to each other and not the cost that’s important! Contemporary trends range from rose gold, which flatters all skin

tones, to mixed metals, vintage inspired designs, blooming flowers, vines and cluster styles for a feminine touch. Another idea is to have a gem set east to west. Still popular is a simple solitaire – a classic choice. Pearls are ever popular along with crystals. It is much more popular for both bride and groom to exchange rings. For men two tone rings are in such as white and yellow gold together. Black zircon rings are gaining in popularity as are titanium, tungsten, white gold and even diamonds. Don’t forget accessories like earrings and bracelets and thank you gifts for the bridesmaidsbracelets, a necklace or earrings, and for the best man and groomsmen - cufflinks and watches, are all popular choices.

touch

here are many things to think about when choosing your flowers such as the overall wedding theme, the colour scheme, the season, and whether it’s a formal or informal celebration. Styles could range from classic, to wild or contemporary and there’s an amazing range of options when it comes to colour, shape and size.

A good florist will help you choose what’s best for you and your budget. You might ask to see a portfolio of their work before settling on a florist you think will do a good job. Word of mouth

and personal recommendation is also a good way of picking a floral artist. Talk to friends who have recently married and see who they recommend and have a good look online for inspiration. You will need to plan your flowers carefully and order for the bride, bridesmaids’ and flower girls, the groom, best man, attendants, page boys, mothers and grandmothers, fathers, grandfathers and ushers.

ADD AN EXTRA TOUCH OF ROMANCE TO YOUR WEDDING DAY

Don’t forget the all-important flowers for the wedding ceremony and reception venue.

Making memories O

ne thing I am told over and over again is how fast a wedding day goes by. So many emotionally significant moments are happening in quick succession that it’s often not until you get your photos back that you even remember how many incredible things happend – both big and small. For that reason, photography is understandably a priority for most people planning a wedding. So what are the most important things to consider before booking someone? 1. Find your style Thanks to social media (especially Instagram), we’re now able to look at the very best wedding photography from around the world, virtually as it happens. This has led to a melting pot

of international influences and styles so make sure you choose a photographer who reflects the style that matters to you. Are you a barefoot, boho bride or are you more classic? Some photographers specialise in shooting candid, unposed docostyle weddings while others shoot with more structure. 2. Fall in love with their work. The best photographer for you is one whose work gives you an instant emotional reaction. Fall in love with their style in the same way you fall in love with your dress. 3. Look at lots of photos Don’t just be seduced by a photographer’s ‘Greatest Hits’ collection on Instagram. Look at their website and make sure the quality of their work is consistently high across just one day by asking

to see one of their weddings in full, preferably at your venue. Make sure the work you are looking at was shot at a real wedding, with all the pressures that come with that. 4. Consider your budget Even though it’s important to have a budget, think hard about how you allocate it. Lots of aspects of the day will fade in your memory over time but you will be looking at your wedding photos for the rest of your life. Typically a photographer’s price reflects their experience, reputation and creative skill (rather than how many hours they are shooting). As

the saying goes… ‘the bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of a cheap price’! 5. Ask Around Ask other wedding vendors and your friends if they would recommend anyone, and ask them to share their experience and advice if they’ve recently been married. 6. Book early Photographers and videographers are usually the next thing booked after the venue. It’s not uncommon for good ones to be booked more than a year in advance.

On

trend now

Pop up weddings The last few years has seen a new concept in weddings-that of pop up weddings which basically are a cost effective way, yet still very romantic way, of getting married. For those wanting a stress free day this could be the perfect solution. The concept behind most pop up weddings is that costs are shared between several couples who marry at staggered times during the day. The work is all done with the venue being decorated, the celebrant and photographer booked, nibbles and bubbly arranged, along with a photographer.

DIY weddings It is possible to organise a wedding yourself but think carefully before committing to this option as it demands great planning and

could incur more stress unless you keep it simple. It’s not a new concept as many weddings decades ago were generally organised by the couple’s family. Steps involved would include hiring a venue and the couple, along with good friends, attending to the rest of the organisation. Many hire venues do have a list of recommended suppliers which they are happy to share. Catering is generally at the top of the list and there are plenty of excellent caterers throughout the Bay to make your day memorable. Make sure to have a list of questions for the venue such as will they provide tables and chairs, dinner ware etc. Are there any restrictions on numbers, decorations, hours of operation and so on. Check if you will have to tidy the venue and is that included in the cost.

Waipatiki A wedding venue Waipatiki can be hired during our off peak times between the mid February to mid December. Waipatiki gives you the opportunity to make your wedding as relaxed or as glamorous as you want it to be and will be unique to your personality. There are plenty of photo opportunities, either at the beach, in the redwoods or in the surrounding areas. It really is a perfect place to tie the knot.

Dream it then

theme it

T

he theme for your wedding will set the foundations for your planning and make that perfect day of yours even more special for you and your guests. The sky is the limit as far as a theme goes and you probably have plenty of ideas already. The most important thing is to choose what suits you both, expresses your personalities, and falls within budget.

Your choice will influence the colours you choose for your dresses, the flowers, the groom’s outfit, invitations, venue decorations, transport, the cake and even the music. Venue decorations are becoming more important for couples to express themselves and, at the same time, add an air of festivity to the celebration after the ceremony. Flowers, place settings, cutlery and crockery can all match the theme. There are specialist companies who hire out all manner of items such as chandeliers, vintage table settings, bunting and letter lights. Creating a mood board is an effective and fun way of visualising how certain colours and textures would look together.

EXPRESS YOUR PERSONALITY You can add pictures of bouquets, centrepieces, dresses, shoes, accessories and cakes. Don’t forget to consider favours which are generally tasty treats that guests can take away as a reminder of your special day. Your venue could also be a key to choosing a theme. A wedding set in an orchard or vineyard could suggest a rustic theme with boutique wines, or cider, followed by an interesting photo shoot. A spring wedding might suggest fresh spring flowers such as daffodils or autumn gives scope for hues of latte and peach. Once the guest list is sorted you can look at design ideas for your main wedding stationery. Other items to consider are envelopes, the order of service, place name cards, menu cards, cake and gift boxes, a guest book, thank you cards, candles, stickers, labels, table decorations and ribbons.

Complete the look

LOOK RADIANT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY WITH PERFECT HAIR, SKIN AND MAKEUP

P

lan your hairstyle well in advance of your wedding day, especially if you are thinking about growing or colouring your hair. Collect images of styles you like and think would suit your big day and take them along to your stylist who will be happy to help work out the best style, colour and cut. One of the big decisions is whether to have your hair loose and flowing for a natural look or an updo for a more sophisticated look. Arrange for a trial styling to ensure you are happy with the hairstyle you have chosen and make sure you have firm bookings for the wedding day. When you’ve decided on your style take any accessories to your stylist so she can cut your hair to suit to ensure you look perfect on the day. You might also have a makeup trial at the same time to check your overall look. Most brides prefer to have their hair done along with their bridesmaids on the day of the wedding. Stylists, and makeup artists, will visit you at home or wherever you are preparing for the wedding to save stress. Professional beauty therapists offer a range of relaxing, nurturing face and body treatments. When you are discussing your wedding

date arrange a consultation well in advance to help draw up a personalised skin and beauty programme. Discuss your skin type with your cosmetician, get into a regular skin care routine and take advice on their product recommendations. Book makeup and hair stylists for yourself and your bridesmaids well in advance. You may also want to

have a trial run to make sure your makeup is perfect. Plan to have eyebrows and eyelashes dyed a couple of weeks before the big day. If you are all feeling the strain of the preparations why not treat yourself and the bridesmaids to a pampering treat such as a facial, massage or spa treatment? There’s no shortage of salons, spas and beauty therapists in

Hawke’s Bay. Get plenty of regular exercise and make fruits, vegetables, lean protein and plenty of water part of your daily life. If you would like to lose a few kilos, and be at a peak of fitness on your big day, set some realistic goals and team up with your partner or friend to make exercising that more enjoyable.

Just for

men

T

hese days most grooms are not afraid to express their own style. Much depends, of course, on the theme of the wedding, the venue and the degree of formality. Day time weddings lend themselves to slightly less formal wear. Grooms should try a variety of styles to see which suits their height and body shape best. Those of medium height and build can wear almost any style, but for other body shapes, the cut, style, length and fit should all be considered. People will be looking at you as a couple so it’s important you put on a cohesive show.

Small touches make all the difference such as waistcoats, coordinated ties, pocket squares, matching socks, braces or special cufflinks. Perhaps they can be matched with the flowers the attendants will be wearing?

EXPRESS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

20 |

weddings 2020

Choosing the right attire for your wedding is a big

decision

T

here can be many factors to take into consideration from making your bride to be and the family happy, to the style of wedding, colour schemes and locations. But, most importantly you must be comfortable. Historically ‘Morning tails’ were to both funerals and weddings. The look was made popular by the English gentry but its popularity is declining. However, black has tended to be the most popular colour for New Zealand weddings. Either as a plain suit or more formal as a tuxedo ‘black tie’ look. If tradition is not for you then coloured suits are a more contemporary option. Blue, navy and shades of grey are always popular. A mid grey/steel colour is particularly popular this wedding

season. This can be matched with a plain white, black or even a blue shirt, so you can add your own style to the outfit. The groom usually wears something to distinguish him from his best man and groomsmen. They might wear the same suits but different coloured shirts or perhaps a differently styled jacket. Think about how the groomsmen will look alongside the bridesmaids- will the style of their outfits, and colours match? Whatever the look you choose, look for quality and fit. HVM can cater for your whole party, whether purchased and professionally tailored or hired. They ensure your suits don’t look hired! Essential on this important day.

Finishing

touches

H

ire, buy or borrow, but make sure whatever you choose that its design, fabric and fit will flatter you and that it’s appropriate for the season and the occasion. When it comes to the reception you’ll want to be able to move freely and to dance

without the outfit being too tight. There’s a choice of off the rack suits which can be tailored to fit or made to measure suits for those wanting something a little more special. For those wanting something a little more casual trousers and a waistcoat are a good option.

The choice of footwear will also depend, to some extent, on the style and formality of the wedding, along with the key colour theme. Traditionally the male attendants will all wear matching footwear and often matching socks. Don’t forget the hair which will need styling several weeks ahead of the wedding to give it time to settle for the photographs. Extra care with the cut and conditioning will ensure all the men look their best. A manicure will have his hands looking good for the photos. The fathers of the bride and groom will also want to look their best and a bit of coordination between all parties will ensure that there are no fashion faux pas on the day.

Stylish arrivals Y

ou might want to make your entrance and departure in unique style, but check out availability and practicality when making your choice of wedding vehicle. Classic or vintage cars - these tend to be booked up well in advance so act quickly once you’ve decided on the date for the wedding. Two wheelers- for something less conventional, you might consider a vintage motorbike and sidecar or a tandem bike. Double-decker bus or coach - a bus, a fun way to get around, can also transport your wedding guests, ensuring they find their way to the ceremony and reception and that they are delivered safely back to their accommodation. Boat - if you’re going near waterways, arriving by boat could be just the ticket.

REFLECT YOUR STYLE AND PERSONALITY IN YOUR FAVOURITE VEHICLE Horse and carriage or horseback - for a truly romantic start to your ceremony nothing can beat arriving in a horse-drawn carriage. Helicopter - what about a chopper for serious thrills and a grand entrance? If there’s a distance to travel it could also be quite practical. Whatever type of transport you choose, you will still want comfort, punctuality, reliability and an element of shelter if the weather is less than perfect.

Honeymoon at

hen thinking about honeymoon destinations the mind often turns to thoughts of Pacific islands. However, travel overseas is out of the question for the time being, but it’s a good opportunity to take a look at what New Zealand has to offer.

There is a wonderful selection of destinations in New Zealand, be it Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne or further afield. Here in the Bay there are beautiful lodges and hotels in which to enjoy a romantic escape, many with the benefit of having both wineries and excellent dining opportunities. Gisborne has beautiful beaches and plenty to explore including wineries. Romantic escape options cater to all tastes but the unifying theme for honeymoons is romance and cuddles, often with a touch of luxury flowers,

champagne or chocolate and all with seclusion and grand views such as lake, beaches and snow covered mountains. Perhaps indulge in a first class hotel while doing some fun filled activities like a luxury helicopter wine tasting tour or a personalized 4wd drive tour complete with refreshments. Destinations popular with honeymooners include Northland and the Bay of Islands, Waiheke Island, the Coromandel Peninsula, Rotorua, Taupo and the Wairarapa. The scenery of the South Island is quite magnificent with winter honeymooners being able to enjoy mountain views and snow based activities. Popular destinations include Nelson and Blenheim, the West Coast, Queenstown and Wanaka, Milford Sound and Christchurch.

here’s plenty of choice when it comes to selecting that special person to conduct your wedding ceremony or civil union.

ig Day… ay…

Emma Boyd Photography

I believe your day is at the very least a reflection of who you are, your stories, represented with integrity and honour in a professional yet relaxed manner. It is the beginning of a new chapter in your lives. You are the authors of your story and it is my role to help you fulfil your dreams and expectations for this special day. Evan Huggett Diploma of Celebrancy 0273169868 | evanhuggett@icloud.com www.evanhuggettcelebrant.com

If you are members of a church your local minister or priest will generally conduct the ceremony but if you choose a ceremony at a registry office you’ll be married by a Registrar of Marriages. A wedding ceremony requires a Registered Marriage Celebrant, and may be performed at any time of the day/night on any day of the year at any venue. The ceremony requires legal documents to be signed in the presence of two witnesses and a Registered Marriage Celebrant. You’ll want to talk to and preferably meet the celebrants on your short list to make sure he or she is the perfect match for your personality and style

I AM YOURS, YOU ARE MINE of wedding. You will be offered a personal consultation to plan the ceremony and discuss vows, readings and poems. The celebrant will attend to all paperwork and legal aspects required. Your vows are very much a personal choice and your celebrant will encourage you to put much thought into these words that will be a public declaration of how you will live your life together. Some brides and grooms can write from the heart but others may need a little help: there are plenty of sources of inspiration in printed form and on the internet.
