lot of the younger guys are taking a leaf out of their grandad’s wardrobe and going for the field and stream look with lots of earthy tones and an autumn flavoured colour palette, such as blue, eucalypt, ash and oxblood at the fore, with highlights of burnt orange, taupe, honey and sand underscored by natural greens and yellows incorporated into tweed style patterns using lots of checks big or small. For the more outdoors sort of guy denim or moleskins with classic RM Williams Craftsman boots are the go matching belts and strong natural coloured jackets, shirts and pullovers finish off the look whether at work or socializing. Mixing Elements like sports coats with jeans or chinos for a more casual look is back on the radar. After covid lockdowns there is also a need for fun and colour and anything goes, so throw in bright coloured crew or vee

neck knitwear for accent and remember scarfs are great for colour too. As for patterns, nothing is off the table, mix, match or clash… just go for it, no one is judging, but if they are… who cares. With winter temperatures don’t go past woollen coats in any length. They look smart and classy either at the rugby or in town. Black, navy and brown are the colours of choice in a winter coat either with formal or casual wear. One or two suits should be in every wardrobe preferably navy or charcoal or both, so versatile with any colours you put them with. A dinner suit is still essential for those special black-tie events, but the tie no longer needs to be black and there is a huge range of colours and patterns in both long ties and bows With more formal clothing especially with suits is the recent

THOMPSONS LAUNCH ECO-FRIENDLY FASHION LABEL

E

IT students Kelsi and Ashford Thompson are fulfilling their dream launching their own fashion label, Thompson Aotearoa. Their garments made their first appearance on the catwalk at the IDEAschool Arts Festival on November 27 last year. Kelsi and Ashford met eleven years ago in Hawke’s Bay. After finishing high school they moved to Wellington, where Kelsi completed a degree in English and Classical Studies and Ashford graduated with a Bachelor in Art History and Classical Studies.

Sustainability is core to the Thompsons business

Moving to Sydney opened a new chapter in their life and also paved the way to a career in fashion. Ashford worked as merchandiser for big clothing companies such as Zara as well as more boutique Australian designers, while Kelsi gained industry experience as retail store manager and in online customer service. The couple had the idea of starting their own label floating around in their heads for quite a while. A six-week sewing course sparked Ashford’s passion.

Ashford Thompson busy pattern making

I really loved the problemsolving aspect of it. My tutor told me that I had a talent for it which gave me extra confidence.” Through self-teaching, Ashford learned more and more skills. Eventually Ashford and Kelsi got sick of the big city and relocated to Fremantle on the West Coast. “At that stage we were already planning to return to Hawke’s Bay so living in a smaller town was a nice transition. I think we would have been shocked to move from Sydney straight back to Napier.” After seven eventful years in Australia, their entrepreneurial spirit drove them back to Napier. “We wanted to put our ideas into action and knew that we needed to study to get the necessary skills,” they say. Ashford enrolled in a Diploma in Fashion while Kelsi, who managed the project, found that the Graduate Diploma in Business was the ideal qualification for her.

graduated with a Diploma in Fashion a few weeks ago and is continuing studying to complete a Bachelor of Creative practice. Kelsi is currently completing her second to last term with the EIT School of Business, learning lots about how to strategically plan for future events and position a brand wisely. In addition, she is also completing an informal internship with Kat Baker at My Marketing Makeover (a local digital marketing firm who specialise in content creation, revamping client’s social media presence and growing targeted followers). Sustainability is core to their business. Their garments are a response to fast fashion proving that you can be stylish without

harming the environment. Ashford is utilising natural fibres, repurposing used fabrics and also making the most of deadstock fabric which would go to landfill otherwise. “Our garments are unisex, inclusive, fun and easy to wear and can be styled in many different ways. A good mix of practical and fashionable. We are also prepared to educate our customers by telling the full story of our garments,” they say. The work on building their brand, THOMPSON | AOTEAROA, is just beginning. “We are so excited to see what 2021 will bring and how we can exceed our own expectations by thriving in the ethical fashion space”

2021 will be a big year for power couple Kelsi and Ashford Thompson who are set to launch their own fashion label.

January this year saw Ashford as one of 20 Māori creatives accepted in the inaugural Kāhui Mentorship Programme for 2021, he

11 Keep spaces fresh

While hopping on to the latest trend can be tempting, not having to redecorate every few years is a goal for many homeowners. But, how do you keep your spaces from going stale?

INTERIOR TRENDS

Beginning with a strong base built with timeless classic colours is important if you want your interior scheme to last.

Rattan-wood-velvet-wool-leather-lamps-patterned rugs, new art work-chair or bed throw-pure cotton pillow cases and duvet covers, update light fittings-lamps-slatted blinds-colourful vases-upcycle garage finds . . . try nice toasty and rich colours for winter.

A paint effect on a bedroom wall adds fun and vibrancy

Long enduring colours include blues, greens, greys, blacks and whites and will serve you well as a starting point. By cultivating a classic scheme in these hues, you will keep your home looking fresh for years to come.

Colours to consider. . .

Blue - A hue that will never go out of fashion, inside or out. Consistently considered to be the most popular colour in the world, it brings a calming and elegant feel to any room or exterior

When you get bored with your colour palette and feel you need to freshen your interior up, then that is the time to bring out some colour and change your surroundings. If you like the colours you have already chosen, but want to make a change, remember you can add texture with rugs, cushions and lampshades. Patterns can make a statement and you can change a favoured wall colour with an updated colour hue. Be brave and take a brush to your brown wood furniture and add colour, new drawer handles and why not try some antique polish to change the finish.

Add texture and accessories

Green - Can be soothing and bring a natural aspect to the game. Grey - A colour that has had a significant resurgence in the last decade. With so many options available, you can easily repaint your walls with a grey that suits your

current furniture and home décor. Red - So many people enjoy having red in their homes because of the way it adds energetic warmth to a space, bringing liveliness and passion along with it. A great option also for a front door. Black - Dramatic and timeless, black is about as classic as colours come. White - They lend a clean and simple look to any room and work wonderfully with literally any other colour you can imagine.

12 Is the all-white kitchen finally on its way out? Darker colours are creeping into designs

T

here are some excellent local kitchen construction, renovation and design companies offering the opportunity to view display kitchens in their showrooms while having an in-depth chat about your requirements. Modular kitchens that can be installed by homeowners are also becoming more popular.

Black sinks and tapware are becoming a popular choice

With computer technology you can see a plan of your proposed kitchen in 3D which makes it perfect for visualizing the finished product and making changes instantly. There are also several design your kitchen apps available. There’s so much choice these days with a vast range of cabinet styles and finishes, contemporary labour saving devices, no handle cupboards and clever storage solutions. Storage options range from the uncluttered look with concealed cupboards to open shelves. Gone are standard stainless steel sinks with the arrival of coloured sinks, charcoal is trending right now, and sinks that are antibacterial, stain resistant, heat and scratch resistant.

KITCHENS WITH CLASS Multi-tiered drawers offer clever storage solutions and there’s a wide range of artistic splash backs. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the range of tiles or wall coverings available. Open plan kitchen/dining rooms are still extremely popular and generally

consist of a central island with either a stove or a sink and easy access to dining and lounges. The final touches are often industrial style pendant lights. Counter tops come in a great range of looks and finishes: concrete, granite or granite look alike, stone or engineered stone and

laminates in a rainbow of colours. The timber look for worktops and benches, and cabinets, is back in vogue. Cupboard finishes range from matt to gloss and laminate. Matte is becoming more popular so is mixing textures. ie mixing matte and gloss.

Dark cabinetry with a wooden benchtop and stainless steel hardware

While white has been popular for a long while we can expect to see colour, particularly darker colours, coming back both in cabinetry and decoration, along with matching accessories such as blinds and chairs. White subway style tiles are also showing signs of declining in popularity.

bathroom is, for many, a place to retreat from the pressures of life, to relax in a warm bath, light a candle and generally soak the cares of the day away. Once just a room in which to have a bath, shower or brush your teeth, bathrooms have evolved from ordinary to extraordinary. Along with kitchens they have become a space in which to indulge and pamper.

Trending now • Wet rooms- no glass • White tiles are making way for a bright pop of colour, various shapes and sizes, vibrant, large floor tiles • Black and grey make a statement, black toilet, taps, cupboards, shower heads and accessories • Round mirrors to soften surroundings • Brass and gold • Wooden accents are back, bamboo, cork floors • Floating vanities, wall hung toilets- increase the feeling of spaciousness. • Underfloor heating • Concealed shower heads • Pot plants • Bluetooth technology to listen to music

When selling a house the appearance of the bathroom, just like kitchens, is often a key factor in a buyers decision making process. Baths and basins that are beautiful objects in their own right are on trend. Modern baths, in particular, are designed to make a statement, are often freestanding and the star of a new bathroom. The height of luxury for many would be a free standing roll top bath with ball and claw feet. Basins have tended to be shallow and white although colour is creeping in and taps are becoming available in finishes other than traditional chrome. Rectangular and square basins are still on trend. Bath taps or spouts are sleek, often minimalist and the waterfall style for bath taps is still popular. Popular basin taps include stainless

A pop of colour adds fun to a bathroom

BATHROOMS OF BEAUTY steel, brushed brass and black. Showers are available in corner fits, rounded, and then there are double showers, and plenty of oversize shower heads to select from. Choose from rain heads, to body jets and overhead jets in a choice of chrome, brass or black.

The design of toilets these days are often squat, minimalist styles and more often than not in white. For those into luxury there’s a top of the range toilet incorporating a bidet, wireless control, sensor activated auto open and close and selfcleaning!

Also trending are wood look vanities oak and elm, large mirrors and open shelving. Stainless steel accessories such as towel rails are in vogue. For those totally refurbishing a bathroom don’t forget small touches like mood lighting, towel holders, hooks, heated towel rail, heaters and ventilation.

Be brave with your bathroom flooring. Hexagon tiles can make such a statement

ow good are you with plants? They do need some care but there are some that are virtually indestructible.

Small, medium, hanging or trailing – maybe we’ll even see the return of macramé pot holders?

Most plants are quite happy indoors provided you give them the right growing conditions such as light, air, water and feeding.

As your plants start growing, remember you will need to repot with a good quality potting mix. Position in a welllit spot but out of direct sunlight and away from heating.

Indoor plants can suffer from over as well as under watering. Best rule of thumb is if dry water and if damp, leave a few days. Generally water once a week although with some plants, even less in the cooler months.

Don’t forget your plants need a regular feed especially in the growing months, with an indoor liquid plant food. They will thank you for this by producing larger and healthier looking foliage.

Your local garden centre will be happy to provide helpful advice on plant selection, but if all else fails and you do not have a green thumb then buy artificial ones - quality these days is pretty good. One of the main advantages ….they don’t need any attention!
