perfect weddings
Two Hawke’s Bay
DAN AND EMMA Dan and Emma were married on 20 February 2021 at Hygge, Clifton Bay. Their two girls Eva and Mackenzie were part of their celebration which made it so precious for the couple. “They absolutely rocked it and the photo opportunities we had with them will always be treasured,” Emma says. The couple, a teacher and builder, live in Hawke’s Bay although Dan is originally from Auckland. They first met in 2014 and while it wasn’t love at first sight “there were good signs from the start.” Dan says Emma is very selfless and puts him and their children first. Emma says that Dan “always makes her laugh, is very supportive and will do anything for his family.” Although Covid threatened to disrupt their plans the wedding went ahead as in Hastings on 5 September 2020, followed by a reception at the Mission Estate. They had to postpone their original plans for a May wedding due to Covid and “the hardest thing was not having Ash’s immediate family, who live overseas, at the wedding,” Ampili says. The couple met 10 years ago while working part-time at the same store. They developed a friendship quickly and started dating a couple of years later. Now Ash is a banker and Ampili works as a doctor at Waikato Hospital.
AMPILI AND ASHISH Ampili and Ashish were married at St Peter Chanel Catholic Church
“Ash and I are Indian by heritage and therefore, we wanted to celebrate our culture on our special day. We had a beautiful church wedding with a burgundy and grey theme. Our reception, on the other hand, was Indian themed, with lots of sparkles and shine,” says Ampili. For the wedding Ampili wore a stunning champagne and white
planned with 80 guests, some travelling from Auckland. They organised the wedding themselves and choose Hygge as “we both felt very comfortable and relaxed when we went for our first visit so decided to lock it in.” “Dan wanted a casual but smart look that also felt comfortable. He wore a blazer so he stood out from the other boys,” Emma says. Emma fell in love with her dress All Who Wander-Adley as soon as she saw it hanging in Bridal Studio. They didn’t have a particular theme but everything just came together. The meal was casual with canapes and sharing plates and a selection of desserts. The wedding cake was a naked three tier confection, vanilla, chocolate and carrot cake with a salted caramel filling, by Rubylicious. “Everyone still talks about the carrot cake.” mermaid dress with lace detail. Ash wore a navy suit, a white shirt and burgundy tie. The bridesmaids wore burgundy dresses with a grey shawl and the groomsmen wore grey suits and burgundy ties. As there were two themes the couple changed into “extravagantly Indian outfits” for the reception. She says the reception was a blast and it was great fun to see everyone let loose on the dance floor having a good time. The Indian inspired meal was formal and a range of delicious desserts were offered. The cake was a three tiered vanilla cake with white buttercream with fresh burgundy and pale pink flowers for décor. Their advice for couples getting married in Hawke’s Bay is to take a moment to breathe and take in the beauty of your special day, because you will miss it as soon as the day is over!
Sincere thanks to our wedding couples Emma & Dan and Ampili & Ashish along with Eva Bradley and Andrew Cardwell of Eva Bradley Photography for allowing us to share these special moments of their magical days. Publications Manager Shirley Randell Editorial Chrys Ayley

Some women have dreamed about their wedding for so long they know exactly what they want. However, trying on gowns can be a frustrating experience and might not always fit the dream. Brides are advised not to take too many people with them when selecting an outfit as inevitably there end up being too many opinions which can make the experience stressful rather than a pleasure.
What are we
wearing?
It’s not just another dress-it’s the dress you’ll remember forever Bridal trends change quickly and right now the runways showing 2021 collections feature floral print dresses, classic ball gowns, ruffles, puffy sleeves, pants, square necklines and even
knee length dresses. Then of course there’s no shortage of bling to make the ultimate bridal statement. Classic elegance, thanks to Megan Markle, is also very much in vogue. Your wedding dress needn’t be traditional bridal style, colour or price. Look at cocktail outfits and maxi dresses for something just that little bit different. There are plenty of choices that are off-beat and not traditionally bridal.

Where is the wedding being held and in what season? Beach, church or country, spring, summer, autumn or winter? Each factor will dictate, to some extent, the style and choice of fabric. Another thing to check out is whether or not you can actually move in your dress as you’ll need to sit down and dance. Know your shape and choose something to highlight your best features and select a garment that you feel good in. Don’t forget the all-important well-fitting undergarments to flatter your shape. Having a bespoke dress made is the ultimate in individuality, however it will cost you more than a ready-made dress. Your designer will want to discuss prospective ideas and styles with you, as well as what suits you and your personality. You can expect several fittings but a dress that’s totally unique.

Beautiful bridesmaids
Bridesmaid for a day, best friend for life Bridesmaids are generally close friends who help plan the big day, provide emotional support and are there by your side on your wedding day to help the day run like clockwork. Smaller weddings might have just one or two bridesmaids although the trend right now is to have larger numbers. Often the number will correspond to the number of groomsmen.
forget that comfort also comes into the equation as they need to wear the dress for a large part of the day, look good, and be able to dance with relative freedom.
Choose styles and colours to flatter the size and body shape of your bridesmaids, they’ll love you for it. This could present some challenges as people come in all shapes and sizes.
Select something they will all love, feel good in and look good. The choices are endless with the option to have matching dresses or the same colour but different styles. Others opt for a range of colours that complement the bridal gown.
The location of the wedding and style will give you some idea as to what might be suitable, especially when thinking of colour. Don’t
At the outset the bride must be upfront about who pays for what and what, if anything, the bridesmaids will be expected to contribute. Factor
in dresses, shoes, underwear, hair styling and makeup. You will certainly find signature bridesmaid collections while looking for your own bridal gown but, if you don’t want to buy single use bridesmaid dresses you can also look at stores that stock dresses for evening wear, formals and balls, which are often pleasantly affordable. Don’t forget about lingerie to suit the dress too. For example, will they need strapless bras? Finally shoes and jewellery to match will put the gorgeous finishing touches to your bridesmaids.

A superb selection of wedding, reception and accommodation
Wineries and vineyards are extremely popular for weddings and receptions in Hawke’s Bay. Conveniently close to town they offer indoor and outdoor options, award winning wines and first rate cuisine. Mission Estate Winery, Church Road Winery, Black Barn Vineyards, Clearview Estate and Craggy Range are a few examples. Other popular venues include the Napier Conference Centre and The Old Church-the site of one of the Bay’s earliest vineyards. Hawke’s Bay also has a great selection of hotels, restaurants, alongside Art Deco buildings, function centres, gardens, orchards, clubs, halls for hire and marquee hire.
East Pier Hotel in Ahuriri, Napier offers an absolute beachfront venue for your wedding ceremonies, receptions, dinner, dance and accommodation all on the one site. Valley d’Vine Restaurant is located on Linden Estate Winery north of Napier in the Esk Valley and can accommodate large functions such as weddings and corporate events with ease. Waipatiki Beach is gaining a reputation as a beautiful spot for a wedding too. It’s at the end of an 11km road that winds through countryside and pine forests. The population is small but increases during the summer months. Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park can be hired for weddings during off-peak times.

There’s a good choice of lodges and historic homesteads with several in Central Hawke’s Bay suitable for weddings: for example, Oruawharo Homestead which also has a historic church, Gwavas Garden and Homestead, and Chapelwick. Taniwha, home of spring daffodils, is another attractive venue with a lake. The beautifully restored CHB Municipal Theatre offers a perfect combination of tradition and contemporary hospitality. The diversity of the venue offers the opportunity to cater for a range of events. Then there are some niche venues for small weddings like Lawn Road Retreat in Clive which can host wedding parties and accommodate up to eight people.

Hawke’s Bay offers an outstanding selection of dining options One of the great attractions of Hawke’s Bay is the wonderful selection of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat that’s grown right here in the Bay. The region is also blessed with an extensive range of fine wines that are grown and crafted right here. Add Mediterranean style weather and Hawke’s Bay is the perfect place for a wedding. Wineries are extremely popular for both wedding ceremonies and receptions. They offer indoor and outdoor options, award winning wines and first class cuisine. Many will have a wedding coordinator to work with you to plan every aspect of your day along with options, at various price points, for the wedding meal. Aside from vineyards and wineries there’s a good selection of venues to suit all tastes. One option for catering, if not provided, is to hire professional caterers who can deliver and serve at your reception site. They can design a menu to suit your preference and also take into account the degree of formality you’d like.

This is a year of change as people relax after 2020 and opt for smaller weddings with fewer guests. Casual dining arrangements include appetisers served while guests mingle after the ceremony. The options are enormous and include artful finger food, food served in ladles or nibbles on sticks. When it comes to the main meal formal meals are making way for grazing tables or buffets. Another trend is to hire BBQs, have a pizza truck or some other street food truck. Desserts are also tending to be a selection of smaller, tasty treats so guests can sample more than one piece
of deliciousness such as a mini lemon meringue pie. Donuts, offering enticing confections with a range of toppings, are especially popular. Alcohol is generally a large part of the celebrations but these days there are a growing number of alcohol free drinks made from herbs and spices that are an excellent alternative. During the planning stage include a realistic amount in your budget for drinks as costs can quickly mount up. Wine is generally served with the meal, both white and red and guests may be given the option of an open bar, a limited bar or a cash bar.

The
young ones
Little helpers - cute but be prepared Involving children in a wedding ceremony is particularly important for a child or children whose parent(s) is getting married or if they are children from previous relationships - it will make them feel special being included in the ceremony. Children can be very cute but also unpredictable so if they are allocated roles such as page boys, flower girls, ushers or ring bearers include them in rehearsals and make them feel important. If they are a little older they may be able to read a quote. If possible assign someone to look after them so you are not worrying about what they are getting up to and have a few activities on hand for them to do – colouring in, puzzles and books or bring along their favourite toy and don’t forget snacks. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to appropriate clothing for boys and girls. You can create a dress for your flower girl in the same design as your dress or

use the same fabric in a style suitable. Alternatively keep the dress simple and match detail from your own gown such as a rosette or applique, crystal beads or pearly buttons to shimmer and shine. Dresses can be purchased at bridal and ballet shops or made at the same time as your own gown. For a less expensive option find a simple white or cream dress in children’s wear shops or department stores and trim with your own choice of embellishments. To add colour, match a sash to your bridesmaid’s gowns or flowers. For the young men a smart shirt and pants (linen is a great choice) or in summer long shorts are perfectly acceptable. For more formal occasions add a bowtie and they’ll look adorable! Today there are plenty of very good clothing options available in all price brackets. Most important is to make sure everyone, including the little ones, enjoys the day.

Bake me a cake
Love is the icing on top of the cake Wedding cakes, in one form or another, are a tradition that has survived 2,000 years, but not without some changes. Gone are the multi-tiered fruit cakes covered in marzipan and white icing that were popular in the last century, to be replaced with an array of shapes, sizes and fillings. Options are as broad as the imagination these days and could be round, square, stacked, cupcakes, or perhaps something to match your shared interests? Smaller cakes are in-think nicely dressed cupcakes, donuts or macarons. Another trend is to have a number of flavoured cakes say chocolate, lemon and butterscotch. Two or three tiers are trending along with drip cakes and real flowers used as decorations. Another idea gaining traction is serving every guest a cute cake for dessert or sending them home

with a beautifully wrapped cake as a favour. There are some excellent cake designers in Hawke’s Bay who are only too happy to discuss your ideas and offer samples for the allimportant taste test. Most of them will also have a portfolio of photos and a website for you to view a range of their work. Traditionally the bride and groom would cut the cake after the meal and in some cultures the first piece is shared between the couple with the groom feeding the bride first, then the bride feeding the groom. Then it’s shared with guests during the reception. However, most often nowadays the cake is cut prior to the meal so there is an excellent photo opportunity and the cake can be cut to be served either as part of the dessert or after the meal with drinks.
Just for
Express your personal style
men
These days most grooms, thank goodness, are not afraid to express their own style which makes for more cohesive weddings. Your guests will be looking at you as a couple so it’s important you put on a coordinated show. While the bride and groom will decide together on the formality of the day there’s still plenty of choice when it comes to outfits. Much also depends on the theme of the wedding and the venue. For example, a church wedding will demand something more formal than a beach wedding. Choices range from formal wear to cocktail attire and casual outfits. Tuxedos with black or white tie are the essence of smart and would suit an evening ceremony. Two or three piece suits or casual slacks and blazers can also look stylish. If choosing a suit try a variety of styles to see which flatter your height and body shape. Men of medium height and
build can wear almost any style, but for other body shapes, the cut, style, length and fit should all be considered. Small touches make all the difference such as waistcoats, coordinated ties, pocket squares, matching socks, braces or special cufflinks. Perhaps they can be matched with the flowers the attendants will be wearing? Select from off the rack suits which can be tailored to fit, or made to measure suits for those wanting something a little more special. Outfits can also be hired. Ties, once considered by many to be old-fashioned, are experiencing a revival. Choose from silver, grey, navy or even a splash of colour, stripes, checks or florals to tone with, or match, the bride’s outfit or flowers. Overseas floral suits and jackets are trending matched with floral ties or pocket squares. Velvet jackets, think rich burgundy, are also popular and add a touch of panache to the groom.

Flowers add a touch of Express your style and personality
romance
Throughout history brides have carried flowers on their wedding day. Over time the reasons have changed but they are still an important factor that beautifully finishes off a wedding. There are many aspects to consider when choosing your flowers like the overall wedding theme, the colour scheme, the season, the style of the bride’s dress and whether it’s a formal or informal celebration. Styles could range from classic, to wild or contemporary and there’s an amazing range of options when it comes to colour, shape and size. Contemporary bouquets vary tremendously although brides are tending to be a little different, playful even. Bright colours are in, so are monochromatic tones, and mixtures of fresh and dried flowers. A good florist will help you choose what’s best for you and your budget or you might give them the flexibility to work within a colour palette and let the results be a surprise. You might ask to see a portfolio
of their work before settling on a florist you think will do a good job.
and the best man. Other close relatives and ushers may also be included.
Word of mouth and personal recommendation is also a good way of picking a floral artist. Talk to friends who have recently married and see who they recommend and have a good look online for inspiration.

Wear my
ring
A ring signifies the continuation of true love
Wedding rings are a symbol of endless love as there is no beginning and no end. They form a very significant part of the ceremony and are a visible sign to the world at large that you are in a committed relationship. Recently some brides have been opting for just one ring but whatever you choose remember that it’s a sign of your love and commitment to each other and not the cost that’s important! The rings will have to fit well together on the finger and complement each other. Most couples choose the same metals, but yellow and white gold can also look cool depending on the design. Contemporary trends range from rose gold which flatters all skin tones, to mixed petals, vintage inspired designs, blooming flowers, vines and cluster styles which adds a feminine touch. Another idea is to have a gem set east to west. Still popular is a simple solitaire – a classic choice. Pearls
are ever popular along with crystals. Also trending are wedding rings inlaid with a number of small diamonds. It’s not unusual for a bride to wear a piece of jewellery, a family heirloom, belonging to a family member who may have passed away. Overseas statement earrings, choker necklaces and tiaras are coming back into fashion. For men two tone rings such as white and yellow gold together or palladium and silver are popular. Black zircon rings are also gaining in popularity along with titanium, tungsten, white gold and even diamonds. Rings containing dinosaurs and meteorites are also available!

creative something based on a shared interest such as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones themed weddings that are very popular overseas.
Your venue could also be a key to choosing a theme. A wedding set in an orchard or vineyard could suggest a rustic theme with boutique wines, or cider, followed by a romantic photo shoot. A spring wedding might suggest fresh spring flowers such as daffodils and autumn gives scope for hues of latte and peach.
Venue decorations add an air of festivity to the celebration after the ceremony and are a great way to show your guests who you are. Flowers, place settings, cutlery and crockery can all match the theme whatever you choose. There are specialist companies who hire out items such as chandeliers, vintage table settings, bunting and letter lights.
Once the guest list is sorted you can look at design ideas for your main wedding stationery. While some of the work can be done online, save the date for example, it’s still customary to post an invite. Then there are place name cards, menu cards, cake and gift boxes, a guest book, thank you cards, candles, stickers, labels, table decorations and ribbons to consider.

Making
memories
Choosing a photographer is one of the most important decisions to be made when planning a wedding and it can be the biggest investment. Leading Hawke’s Bay photographer EVA BRADLEY shares her experience.
One thing I am told over and over again is how fast a wedding day goes by. So many emotionally significant moments are happening in quick succession, and so it’s often not until you get your photos back that you even remember how many incredible things happened – both big and small. For that reason, photography is understandably a priority for most people planning a wedding. So what are the most important things to consider before booking someone?
1. FIND YOUR STYLE
Thanks to social media (especially Instagram), we’re now able to look at the very best wedding photography from around the world, virtually as it happens. This has led to a melting pot of international influences and styles so make sure you choose a photographer who reflects the style that matters to you. Are you a barefoot, boho bride or are you more classic? Some photographers specialise in shooting candid, documentary style weddings while others shoot with more structure.
2. FALL IN LOVE WITH THEIR WORK.
The best photographer for you is one whose work gives you an instant emotional reaction. Fall in love with their style in the same way you fall in love with your dress.
3. LOOK AT LOTS OF PHOTOS
Don’t just be seduced by a photographer’s ‘Greatest Hits’ collection on Instagram. Look at their website thoroughly and make sure the quality of their work is consistently high across just one day by asking to see one of their weddings in full, preferably at your venue. Make sure the work you are looking at was shot at a real wedding rather than a styled shoot, because creativity under pressure in a real-life wedding environment is what you need.
4. CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET
Even though it’s important to have a budget, think hard about how you allocate it. Lots of aspects of the day will fade in your memory over time but you will be looking at your wedding photos for the rest of your life. Typically a photographer’s price reflects their
experience, reputation and creative skill (rather than how many hours they are shooting). If you have a fixed budget, you may be better off investing in one good photographer or videographer rather than splitting the budget between them and potentially being disappointed in the results of both.
5. SIZE MATTERS
Covid has forced many couples recently to keep their guest-list (including vendors) under 100 guests to meet legal restrictions around large gatherings. The upshot of this is that couples have had to think really carefully about the importance of each and every guest in their lives and the event has as a result been more intimate - and cheaper! While talking Covid…make sure you understand the T&Cs of the photography contract you are signing before paying a deposit. Postponements have been a big factor in weddings recently.
6. BOOK EARLY
Photographers and videographers are usually the next thing booked after the venue. It’s not uncommon for good ones to be booked more than a year in advance.

arrivals
Choose a vehicle that reflects your style and personality Making sure that you and your guests get to the wedding on time is an important element that mustn’t be overlooked when planning your big day. The bridal party and guests will need transport, especially those coming from out of town. Don’t forget transport home after the celebrations are over. You might want to make your entrance and departure in unique style, but check out availability and practicality when making your choice of wedding vehicle. Chauffeured classic or vintage carsthese tend to be booked up well in advance so act quickly once you’ve decided on the date for the wedding. There’s a good selection available in the Bay thanks to the popularity of Art Deco tours. There are some more modern, but classic vehicles
available to hire, such as Chevrolets and VW Kombis. Travelling to your wedding by truck is also bound to make a statement. Bikes- for something less conventional, you might consider a super trike, a vintage motorbike and sidecar or a tandem bike. Hire a bus or coach-it’s a fun way to get around, can also transport your wedding guests, ensuring they find their way to the ceremony and reception and that they are delivered safely back to their accommodation.
Boat-if you’re going near waterways, arriving by boat could be just the ticket. Horse and carriage or horseback-for a truly romantic start to your ceremony nothing can beat arriving in a horsedrawn carriage. Helicopter-what about a chopper for serious thrills and a grand entrance? If there’s a distance to travel it could also be quite practical. Whatever type of transport you choose, you will still want comfort, punctuality, reliability and an element of shelter if the weather is less than perfect.

Wedding websites A wedding website is becoming part of planning your wedding. You can start off by sending a teaser to guests like “Keep February 14th free”
It is a great resource for guests attending as it will help them plan their own schedule. You can add as much or as little on your website. Start off with the basics, like date, timeline and where the ceremony and reception will be held. Include maps and directions for out of towners. Remember to add dress code, gift register, remind guests to let you know of any dietary requests, accommodation in the area and what sights they might like to visit if staying on for a few days.

Phones, I Pads and cameras . . . we live in a world of technology which has its own place and time! An unplugged wedding ceremony is about enjoying the moment for both bridal party and guests. The last thing a bride and groom wants to see as they say their “I do’s” is a sea of electronic gadgets and bridal pics that hit social media before the ceremony is even completed. ANSWER: Have a sign made that has words as not to offend guests, something like “ We invite you to be fully present during our ceremony, Please turn off all phones and cameras and enjoy this moment with us.”
Addressing the elephant in the room-Covid 19 With so many weddings over the past year cancelled, postponed or completely rearranged because of Covid 19, there is still a little apprehension in the air. A few dainty, tastefully decorated sanitizer stops dotted around the venue will be a quiet reminder to all. Also give some thought to a smaller number of guests and more space to social distance.
Celebrants I promise you my unconditional love There’s plenty of choice when it comes to selecting that special person to conduct your wedding ceremony or civil union. If you are members of a church your local minister or priest will generally conduct the ceremony however if you choose a ceremony at a registry office you’ll be married by a Registrar of Marriages. A wedding ceremony elsewhere requires a Registered Marriage Celebrant, and may be performed at any time of the day/night on any day of the year at any venue. The ceremony requires legal documents to be signed in the presence of two witnesses and a Registered Marriage Celebrant. You’ll want to meet the celebrants on your short list to make sure he or she is the perfect match for your personality and style of wedding. You will be offered a personal consultation to plan the ceremony and discuss vows, readings and poems. The celebrant will advise you about paperwork and legal aspects required. The celebrant is very much part and parcel of the ceremony and generally sets the tone for the proceedings. It’s important that you and the celebrant get on well together and they understand what you are trying to achieve. You will likely chat about your relationship and the celebrant may use part of your story, likely something humorous, during the ceremony. Your vows are very much a personal choice and your celebrant will encourage you to put much thought into these words that will be a public declaration of how you will live your life together. Some brides and grooms can write from the heart but others may need a little help: there are plenty of sources of inspiration in printed form and on the internet and your celebrant will be able to help. Often during the vows there are moments of laughter and much love.

Honeymoon at Enjoy a romantic interlude in New Zealand
Waiheke Island by Camilla Rutherford. When thinking about honeymoon destinations the mind often turns to thoughts of Pacific islands. However, with the exception of Rarotonga, travel overseas is virtually out of the question for the time being, however it’s a good opportunity to take a look at what New Zealand has to offer. There is a wonderful selection of destinations in New Zealand, be it Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne or further afield. Here in the Bay there are beautiful lodges and hotels in which to enjoy a romantic escape, many with the benefit of having both wineries and excellent dining opportunities. Gisborne has beautiful beaches and plenty to explore including wineries.

Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough by Kieran Scott. Romantic escape options cater to all tastes but the unifying theme for honeymoons is romance and cuddles, often with a touch of luxury, flowers, champagne or chocolate and all with seclusion and grand views such as lakes, beaches and snow covered mountains. Did we mention hot pools and spas? Perhaps indulge in a first class hotel while doing some fun filled activities like a luxury helicopter wine tasting tour or a personalized 4wd drive tour complete with refreshments? Glamping is becoming increasingly popular and would be something different to experience together. Select from eco options, enjoy fishing and swimming
