Healtthy ageing
A
geing starts earlier than we think. Making healthy choices sooner rather than later can significantly lessen the impacts of ageing. Ageing is only 25% genetic - the rest is under your control. Here are some tips about how to keep well as you age.
Keep moving Staying active is important when you’re getting older (especially if you have health conditions). Regular physical activity can improve your health and wellbeing and make it easier to perform daily tasks. Being active for 30 minutes a day encourages your brain to release chemicals to improve your mood. Remember, if you are looking forward to an activity it will be easier to do. You can also add to what you already do – take the stairs instead of a lift and park further away from the supermarket. Get involved with sports clubs, walking groups and community classes.
Take care of you Remember to fill up your own cup before your fill up another’s. As you age, invest time in yourself to help you live your most fulfilling life.
Use technology to make connecting with others easier. For more information, visit www.wdhb.org.nz/healthyageing.
Mindfulness and meditation for health are becoming increasingly recognised as beneficial in helping us to face challenges as we age. Take time to nourish your body as well ensure you stay hydrated and take time to eat 5+ fruit and vegetables each day and remember your regular check-ups and screenings.
Stay connected As we age, staying connected to our communities can be extremely beneficial for mental health and wellbeing as well as physical health. Connect with wh nau/family and friends in ways that are meaningful and connect with your community through clubs and events.

Good circulation brings s Grreat health benefits
T
hai Body Massage/ Thai Foot Massage ‘Healthy Life Package’ from an expert massage therapist can benefit you in the following ways: 1. Improves the functioning of the blood and lymphatic circulatory systems. This helps get the blood to where it’s needed and removes toxins and other waste material from your bodies natural functions. This is why getting a massage at least twice a week is recommended. 2. Able to relieve muscle and joint pain by improving the correct functioning of soft tissue.
3. It relieved stress and creates a wholesome effect in the mind. Some of this may be attributed to the bodies release of endorphins during the massage. The Neck and Shoulders Massage is particularly effective at quickly providing relief from tension headaches and upper back pains. 4. Motivates better mobility. If you are not in pain you are more likely to want to get up and do more. 5. Improves health condition on partial paralysis with revival and pressure point massage. Soft tissue manipulation and joint exercise helps
maintain condition of the affected areas and reduces muscle wastage. 6. Massage is an effective alternative way to reduce
or avoid taking pain killers, some of which can cause unpleasant side effects, which in extreme cases may require the taking of other medications to counter.

Parkinson’s In Whanganui
P
arkinson’s Disease is a progressive, degenerative neurological disorder that mostly affects physical movement. There is no cure and no known cause for Parkinson’s, and is mostly found in older members of the population, but not always.
There is no x-ray, blood test or scan to provide confirmation, so diagnosis is by presentation of symptoms. Often symptoms are evident for a period of time prior to the patient seeing their GP or Specialist Neurologist. The correct drug regime for the individual can ensure that the symptoms are kept under control, and each patient will be prescribed drugs that are suitable for them.
Symptoms include tremor, shuffling gait, bland expression, anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, and softening of the speech. Movement and physical activity are crucial to the well-being of the person with Parkinson’s and 10,000 steps per day is the bench mark. Parkinson’s New Zealand Charitable Trust (PNZCT) is the governing body and is based in Wellington. There are 4 Community Engagement Advisor’s (CEA) who are the vital link between the regions and Head Office. Clinical support is provided for the Whanganui, Rangitikei, and Ruapehu regions by a nurse (RN) who is based in Whanganui.
Our region has a committee (Parkinson’s Action Group) with a chairperson, administrator and committee members. Whanganui Parkinson’s Activities include: Virginia Lake walk on Monday morning. Steady As You Go (SAYGO) exercise group on a Tuesday afternoon. Counterpunch Boxing on Wednesday morning and Friday morning. 2 – 3 seminars per year.

SATIVA BOTANICALS Sativa Botanicals was created in 2020 with a clear initiative: To develop and provide Premium hemp products with service to match. Values of compassion are the foundation of what Kelly and Paula do and they knew combined, they could join an industry bringing their high standards and a fresh approach. The Whanganui Company Sativa Botanicals has New Zealand’s largest range of hemp derived 100% natural health, wellness and skincare products. “Due to a number of family members with arthritis and external skin conditions our first two products were formulated with pain and skin irritation relief in mind.
The results were astounding and these two products remain our No.1 purchased products”.
The rich profile of nutrients, fatty acids, omegas, vitamins and minerals are why people are calling it a superfood!
The Benefits of consuming Hemp Hearts (Hulled hemp seeds) and Hemp Seed Oil continue to be discovered. More and more are consuming the superfood daily and the results are being felt. Hemp aids in digestion, improved heart health, immunity, brain health, naturally balances hormones, skin disorders, is rich in Fatty Acids, decreases pain and improves joint movement.
The hemp plant is still widely misunderstood, especially for its medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Education is key and we are available in person most Saturdays at the Whanganui River Markets to answer questions on these topics.
Hemp is the name given to cannabis plants which produce little to none of the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Sativa Botanicals uses locally grown hemp and are available online to purchase at www.sativabotanicals.co.nz, the Whanganui iSite, and we are a regular fixture at the Whanganui River Markets. Contact: info@sativabonicals.co.nz

Diabeties NZ What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body does not make enough – or any – insulin or does not use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and does not reach your cells Type 1 Diabetes

If you have type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. Your insulin system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can appear at any age.
People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin several times a day. Type 2 Diabetes If you have type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin well. You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. However, this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood causes a variety of health problems. Although diabetes, presently, has no cure, you can take steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy.

Ocular Coherence Tomography is a very advanced and specialised medical technique. The OCT scanner uses light energy to generate scans of microscopic tissue within your eye. The OCT scanner can generate images of both the anterior (front) and posterior (back) ocular surface.
The trend analysis feature allows us to compare scans from all previous appointments. In this way we can monitor for and detect subtle changes. As with all areas of medical care, early detection often facilitates early treatment and can lead to more positive health outcomes.
Both three dimensional (map) scans can be generated as well as high definition scans through a section of tissue (line scans).

Naturopath / Remedial Body Therapist
A
more natural treatment for your ailment. Chartered Practitioner of Natural Medicine, Kathleen Keith, likens her work to that of the old fashioned GPs with their black bags with a wide range of therapies to call on as needed by individuals. Kathleen is a professionally trained therapist with wide-ranging experience in a number of fields, from treating immune dysfunctions, homeopathy, naturopathy, allergies, natural vision impairment, neuro linguistic programming to herbal energy therapy and remedial body therapies. On-going training ensures that you receive the best health care possible.
“The Bowen Technique” is the major basis of most of my treatments. It’s a dynamic system treating muscle and connective tissue and is a very useful hands-on treatment for soft tissue, using the myofascial techniques. “It works by stimulating various soft tissue areas, empowering the body’s own healing resources.” The Bowen Technique is a holistic treatment, stimulating circulation, encouraging lymphatic and venous drainage, promoting assimilation of nutrients, eliminating toxins, increasing joint mobility and improving posture.
“Relief is often obtained after the first session, and many patients only need two or three treatments one week apart. The treatments are effective through clothing, and sessions usually last between 20 and 40 minutes.” Having her clinic in her home allows Kathleen to accommodate shift workers and out-of-town visitors, when convenient to them.
identifying and treating underlying causes of illhealth are all part of the Naturopath’s work. So if you are sick of feeling tired and looking for a more natural treatment for your ailment, and a treatment leaving you with no side effects, phone Kathleen for an appointment and let her help you get back into good health the natural way.
Education is an important part of Kathleen’s work. She is able to give easy to understand explanations to help her patients get involved in their own health programme and journey to wellness. Treating the whole person, teaching prevention, plus

Manuka Honey: Number 1 in our Firrst Aid Kit
M
anuka Honey is antibacterial and bacterial resistant (This means that bacteria shouldn’t be able to build up a tolerance to its antibacterial effects.) We use Manuka honey for treating everything from a sore throat to clearing up blemishes on your skin. • helping heal cuts and scrapes. • clearing infections – both inside and out! • easing stomach aches • improving digestion • boosting the immune system • providing energy Healing wounds The acidic properties of honey have been shown to promote healing and protect wounds. Honey is low in
moisture and draws fluid from a wound. This helps remove waste and speed along the healing process. Honey also draws water out of the cells of invading bacteria. Bacteria need water to grow and survive. Drawing the water out of invading bacteria will kill them off. Antiviral properties Manuka honey attacks germs with a substance called MGO. Found in the nectar of some Manuka plants, this substance helps heal both minor and chronic wounds. Because of this, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved bandages infused with Manuka honey for both over-the-counter and prescription sales. The more MGO there is in the
honey, the more antiviral and antibacterial properties it has. Antibacterial properties Manuka honey also appears to be effective against many bacteria. It has been noted that it appears to attack infections that form a biofilm, or a thin, slippery layer of bacteria (once an infection has formed a biofilm, it’s considered to be untreatable). To date, there are no reports of microbial resistance to honey. That suggests it might be successful against resistant organisms and long-lasting wound infections that do not heal with regular antibiotic therapy. There is both anecdotal and scientific evidence supporting this.
