here’s always a lot to celebrate in Whanganui, but right now in particular we are experiencing growth in all areas of our community – population, business and infrastructure. We keenly await the results of the 2018 Census which will tell us just how many newcomers have made Whanganui their home, but in the meantime, the information from the test Census held in March last year shows we are growing at a rate of about 700 people per year - the largest population growth Whanganui has seen in decades. This is evident in the buzz in our town centre, in the wealth of activities and events happening here and in the positive way people are talking about our city. Whanganui District Council, with support from the community, has put some tangible actions in place for newcomers through the Welcoming Communities Plan. Although this plan has been designed with recent migrants, former refugees and international students in mind, its goal is to provide better access to information, activities and services which will make anyone feel at home. Whanganui was selected for this pilot programme alongside nine other councils throughout Aotearoa – just another way we are leading the way nationwide. Our community has always been known for its manaakitanga and I want to thank Whanganui locals for making sure all ‘Whanga-newbies’ feel at home here. Whanganui has a diversity of businesses – from food and hospitality
to manufacturing, agricultural and ‘disruptive’ technologies in the digital sector. Often I open the Whanganui Chronicle and read about a new business making its mark on our district and I commend those who have a vision for an idea and the motivation to make it happen – as well as choosing to make it happen here.
Mayor Hamish McDouall
I am excited about recent conversations I’ve had with people who are looking at Whanganui for relatively new horticultural industries because of our microclimate and stable workforce. People are noticing we have some the nation’s most productive soils. As many will know, I was part of a delegation from the Council and community who recently visited our sister city Nagaizumi-cho to celebrate our 30-year relationship. We talked about educational opportunities which can be shared between our two cities and waste
minimisation initiatives, while encouraging our sister city residents to attend the 2019 Masters Games here in Whanganui. It was a worthwhile trip which further cemented this important relationship for cultural and economic reasons beneficial to both communities. We are also actively exploring a locale in China for a new relationship. The New Zealand Masters Games will be held in February 2019 with 5,000 athletes expected to compete in almost 70 sports. Next year is the 30th celebration of the Games in New Zealand, which should make the event extra special. The organising team is delighted to announce that Downer, who plays a significant role in our local infrastructure, is the main sponsor. The downtown Games Village will bring competitors to our town centre where we can showcase our bars and cafes, galleries, heritage buildings and access to our magnificent awa. I will be competing in cricket, football and I am considering playing pool, so if you see me, please be sure to say hello. In other exciting news for our community, Whanganui has recently been on the receiving end of a huge funding boost from the New Zealand Transport Agency, with almost $40 million of roading maintenance and $2.6 million in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. We have also worked strenuously on applying for the $3 billion Government Provincial Growth Fund and we anticipate an exciting announcement soon. With all of this going on, what’s not to celebrate?

anganui’s forestry sector is now in full swing with many of the large syndicated and privately owned forests planted in the early 1990’s reaching maturity.
This has created some very solid career paths for young people in the region as the demand for a reliable workforce to meet the long term harvest profile has risen. Many of the harvest crews are now mechanised and forestry is now at the cutting edge of machinery technology. Much of the workforce are now primarily in very comfortable and safe machines, some with values up to $2.2m. The increase in regional harvest activity has also had downstream benefits for other service provision industries such as engineers, auto electricians and tyre retailers. With approximately 25 harvest crews based in the region, the total number of direct forestry based employees would total around 400 including the establishment and tending functions. The governments’ recently announced ‘Billion Tree Program’ has ignited greenfields forest establishment and this, combined with the buoyant carbon market, has once again proven forestry to be a very viable alternative investment to farming operations, especially on marginal and
erosion prone land. It has also ensured that the forest industry is futureproofed through continued sustainable harvest levels following on from the ‘wall of wood’ which was a result of the planting boom of the 90’s and early 2000’s. The domestic and export markets have performed very well over the last 3 years with very strong prices providing very good returns to forest owners on a net return basis. Domestic building starts, both residential and commercial, have buoyed local sawmills producing framing lumber for construction and many of these mills are spending significant amounts on capital works to increase production. Much of the sawn clear lumber from pruned log sawmills is sold into Europe and this market has also remained strong for an extended period of time. The medium to long term demand for NZ radiata is strong as it is viewed as a very versatile and multipurpose raw material. Uses range from construction, packaging, pulp and paper to furniture and appearance grade products. China is the largest consumer of export logs with approximately 75% of the exported log volume destined for China.
The recent trade war between China and the US is actually strengthening NZ’s market position as tariffs of 25% on US log www.whanganuichronicle.co.nz
products imported to China have reduced US supply which has been replaced by NZ radiata. In addition, the Chinese government is becoming increasingly aware of the effects of deforestation on their water supplies and land stability. The Chinese Government is restricting their domestic harvest in response to this which in-turn creates demand for our products. To put this into context, China uses approximately 66 million cubic metres of Roundwood of which around 40 million is sourced domestically and the remaining 26 million is imported, 20 million from NZ. FOMS is the largest privately owned forestry company in NZ with an annual production of 1.2 million tonnes from over 50 harvesting crews throughout the North Island. FOMS provides all forestry related services from carbon and ETS advice, forest establishment and tending and full harvesting and marketing services and have staff domiciled throughout the North Island. Contact the team at FOMS for any advice on you forest or woodlot.

Since she was re-launched on the Whanganui River in 2000, the Waimarie paddle steamer has become an iconic symbol of the River City and a significant attraction for both locals and visitors.
Based on the banks of the Whanganui River, the Waimarie sails up the river and back three days a week from October until Christmas, then six days a week until April. The two hour experience, enhanced by tales of the colourful history of the steamer and of the river, is popular with both young and old.
Popular private charters
The Waimarie is becoming increasingly popular and it’s not just her scheduled daily summer or Friday night sailings in demand with more private hires available than ever before.
Did you Know?
• Waimarie means good fortune • Designed & pre-fabricated in London in 1899 • Carried cargo, mail & river dwellers in its early years • Was known as the queen of the river • Sank in 1952 • Pulled from the river 1993 • Restored by the people of the city • Re-launched 2000 • Only surviving coal-fired paddle steamer from NZ’s golden riverboat era
The Waimarie has hosted all sorts of special chartered sailings, from weddings and birthdays to champagne breakfasts and corporate events, and even schools keen on educating students about the history of the river. It’s unbelievable the amount of restoration work that has been donated by the people of the city to restore Waimarie to its former glory – it’s truly remarkable and quite a story to tell on how she has spent her last 100 years.

Bird-watchers and bush-walkers are sure to delight in the expanse of protected native bush at Bushy Park. The Sanctuary is a 245 acre predator-free remnant of some of New Zealand’s finest lowland native rain forest. A network of forest paths traverse the forest reserve that includes mahoe, mamaku, pukatea, rata, and rimu along with colonies of ferns and mosses. With a choice of 10 tracks to walk, you’ll have ample opportunity to spot the native bird species that abound. A predator eradication programme has rid the forest of almost all pests – stoats, ferrets, weasels, possums, feral cats, hedgehogs and rats, and the culmination of this eradication programme has been the completion of a 4.8km Pest Proof Fence around the entire Park. Bushy Park is considered by Forest and Bird to be among the 25 best restoration ecology projects in Australia and New Zealand. Featuring some of New Zealand’s spectacular native birdlife, the Sanctuary is home to such species as the Hihi (Stitchbird) and the Tieke (Saddleback). You may also be able to spot the diminutive Toutouwai (North Island Black Robin), and the majestic Kereru (NZ Wood Pigeon). Listen out for the beautiful song of the Tui, Korimako (Bellbird), and Ruru (Morepork), while finding yourself in the company of the well-known locals such as Fantails, Kingfishers, Black Swans, Mallards, Pukeko, Silvereye and many more. Visiting the forest is free for everyone. Donations are welcome to help maintain, protect and enhance this special place. A donation box is alongside the Stables, just before you enter the forest. Access to the forest is during daylight hours only. For access outside these times, please contact the Homestead 06 3429879 to arrange. For more information see www.bushyparksanctuary.org.nz.

The Virginia Lake Reserve is home to the Winter Gardens, an Art Deco styled conservatory and outdoor display area with floral, fern and water features. It is known for its colourful tropical plants and themed gardens. A great place to visit year-round whatever the season or the weather with an adjacent café established in the former park manager’s house. Not only just flowers, there are also art
displays and sculptures to discover here. The Centennial Winter Gardens were opened in 1940 to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Adjoining are three small outdoor display areas in a walled Art Garden combining sculpture and art. Some of the pieces have been designed by local art students. Entry is free and the Winter Gardens are open from 9:00am to 5:00pm every day.

Permanent plantings are highlighted with changing displays of colourful flowering annuals which vary each season. He spoke on Dame Tariana’s behalf at her investiture at Putiki Marae on August 14, after Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy made her a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Dame Tariana was a whangai child in a conservative, almost Victorian, Putiki family, Huwyler said. She always rebelled against that conservativism. Accepting an honour bestowed by the Queen was a compromise she made in the interest of her family. Her aunts would have loved to see it, Huwyler said. Dame Patsy said it was a pleasure to bestow the honour in front of Dame Tariana’s family, friends and community. She spoke of Dame Tariana’s extraordinary contribution on behalf of all New Zealanders, her commitment, perseverance and compassion.
Dame Tariana’s citation spoke of her time at Pakaitore, the way she founded Te Oranganui Iwi Health Authority and her time in Parliament. It said one of the hallmarks of her leadership was the idea that change was more enduring when people determined their own solutions. Whanganui kaumatua John Maihi added his recollections of discussions with Dame Tariana in which she was the ultimate winner. He remembered a “magnificent” speech she made at Pakaitore in 1995, where she spoke of dying for the cause.

“No one agreed with her. I think some of them were saying ‘Die?’. She was staunch and she stuck to her kaupapa. She would face anything.” While all this was going on, Mona Patea in the audience reflected on what she knew of Dame Tariana’s generosity providing food for the hungry and school uniforms for families that coudn’t afford them. “The old people and the children are the people she worries about.” Dame Tariana herself looked tired, and Patea said she wouldn’t be enjoying all the praise, and would prefer to be “going to look after the people” instead. Like many present, Patea enjoyed the chance to see her cousins and said there was always “a bit of hilarity” at such occasions. “This is one of the jubilant days. A wonderful day.” The Governor-General’s party received a full wero and powhiri.

recumbent lion, a memorial to British soldiers who fought and died in the 19th century in Whanganui, was unveiled and blessed last Friday morning after extensive refurbishment and cleaning. The Lion Monument on the Veteran’s Steps in Queen’s Park was unveiled in 1893 in memory of of imperial and colonial troops who died in the New Zealand Wars in the district and in particular the battles of Te Ngutu o Te Manu and Nukumaru, says Brodie Stubbs, memorials and taonga manager, Manatu Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage. “Paid for by the citizens of Whanganui with a contribution from government, the memorial was designed and sculpted by Whanganui artist George Sheriff from Waikawa bluestone and marble. The monument was the first example in New Zealand of a sculptured lion, representative of departed British heroes. “The monument also marks the graves of 17 men of the 18th and 50th Regiments killed at the Battle of
Nukumaru on 25 January 1865 who are buried nearby. Their names are listed on panels set in the alcove behind the lion. “The Lion Monument is one of 83 national monuments and historic gravesites throughout Aotearoa for which Manatu Taonga is responsible. “Costing approximately $200,000, this has been a four-month restoration project and my thanks go to Lime Works Ltd and local firm Scafit Ltd for making the structure safe and restoring the lion to top-notch condition,” Brodie Stubbs says. Friday was a solemn occasion with guest speakers and many waiata. Reverend Stephan van Os found the blessing particularly memorable. “I have served with the Royal Irish Regiment and there are the remains of soldiers of the 18th Foot which is an antecedent regiment of a regiment I served with in Afghanistan. The other men whose remains are buried here are the antecedents of Princess of Wales Royal Regiment
alongside of whom I served in Iraq and Afghanistan.” Brodie Stubbs says the maintenance of graves and memorials provides an opportunity for current and future generations to learn about our history and gain an understanding of who we are. Kyle Dalton, secretary manager of the Wanganui RSA, thanked everyone involved for their care and attention to the Lion Monument. “It’s a very auspicious place here, some great events have taken place on this very site, and it is appropriate that it is in the middle of Veterans’ Steps, which were consecrated by four returned servicemen - one from the Crimean War, one from the Land Wars, one from the Boer War and one from the First World War. Just as our kin lie overseas and are looked after by people over there, it is beholden upon us to look after others who were here in New Zealand.”

wimming, boating, picnics and BBQ facilities! Lake Wiritoa is one of three coastal dune lakes a few minutes south of Whanganui and a major recreation area for the city. It was once known as “Dutch Lagoon”. The Wanganui Water Ski Club regularly uses the lake and host district and regional championships here and so does the Whanganui Multisport Club with dedicated active and passive recreation areas. It’s a wonderful place for a family picnic and outing on a sunny day – water skiing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and fishing. You can also take a horse trek with Actifun Riding Stables.
Joanna Margaret Paul, a NZ visual artist, poet and film-maker and long-time Whanganui resident wrote of Lake Wiritoa “the water is ‘beautiful’,’beautiful’”. Stocked annually with well-conditioned two year old rainbow trout from the Rotorua Hatchery, fishing is easy and the Wanganui Anglers Club run a “Lake Wiritoa Kids Fish Day Out” each year at the end of October. Perch and eels can also be caught. The lake is open for fishing year round with the exception of May and June for duck shooting season and the best time to fish in the summer is said to be the early morning and evenings.

rafalgar Square has been at the heart of Wanganui since first opening its doors on November
1989. As a ‘child of the ‘80’s, Trafalgar Square has seen some changes over the years but none so spectacular as the new logo and façade upgrade works completed in 2016. It is a single level shopping centre with 4 main entrance ways that lead to a common area. With 24 retailers trading within the complex, this is Wanganui’s largest retail complex with over 460 free carparks for customers to use and browse, shop, eat and relax in our wonderful Foodcourt. The centre is open 7 days a week for your shopping convenience. Countdown is open from 7am, and The Warehouse from 8am. Visit our website for the retailer trading hours of all our other specialty stores.
The creation of the annex building, which now houses Carpet Court and All About Furniture, is utilised from the former site of the Criterion Hotel. The Foodcourt easily entices shoppers with the wide range of culinary delights from Ocggi Salad & Sushi, Roasties Carvery, The Shake Shed, Kiwiana Café and Indian Taj. Wanganui Insurance Brokers has looked after Wanganui’s insurance needs since 1983 and was the brain child of Warrick Funnell and Roger Buller. Grant Mckinnon soon joined Wanganui Insurance Brokers in 1985 and Geoff Lott joined the team in 1994 and took over the business when Grant retired. Julie Bullock has worked in the business for 10 years, becoming a partner in 2010. “With two owners living in Wanganui and working in the business, it means that there is always someone steering the ship when one of us needs to be away from the office” says Geoff. “We are extremely fortunate that all our staff are equally as dedicated and provide quality service to our clients” adds Julie. Wanganui Insurance Brokers is the largest, locally owned broking house in Wanganui, with four qualified insurance brokers including
Geoff and Julie, a dedicated claims manager and seven other committed staff. Brokers are easily accessible in the office and on the phone but are also mobile, travelling to see clients across the region. “Many of our clients are in Wanganui but we actually have clients the width and breadth of New Zealand. “Wherever our clients are, it’s part of the authentic service we offer to have a face to face visit from time to time” says Geoff. Brokers will visit new and existing clients to discuss their needs and then tailor a policy that is right. Wanganui Insurance Brokers works with over 10 A rated insurance companies which means you don’t just get an off the shelf product that nearly fits, you get what you need. “It’s important because every client has different requirements.” When it comes to claim time, the team at Wanganui Insurance Brokers work hard for their clients to get the best outcome – something you won’t get by going direct to an insurance company.
“Our focus and core values have remained unchanged over all the years. We work for our clients, not the insurance company. We have remained fiercely local and are extremely proud to be Wanganui’s oldest and largest locally owned and operated brokering firm” says Geoff. Wanganui Insurance Brokers specialises in commercial, business, domestic, vehicle, liability, farm, transit, boats/marine, contractors, construction and cyber insurance and can be found on the Victoria Avenue side of Wicksteed Terrace. “We recently redecorated our offices because we think it’s important to have a comfortable modern environment for our clients to visit and that reflects our progressive and high standard operation,” commented Julie. When it comes to insurance, if you want good old fashion service from someone you know and can trust who will put you first, give the team at Wanganui Insurance Brokers a call.

hanganui’s Cutting Edge has won a national award for sales of a top-of-the-range mower. Cutting Edge owners John and Sue Fellingham received the Walker Mower Sales Award at a Walker conference in Auckland. “We’ve been supplying Walker equipment for about three years,” Sue Fellingham said. “They are very expensive mowers but we’ve sold quite a lot of them. They are big mowers for commercial use. “It’s a big achievement. It’s a good product but very expensive. There’s a lot involved to get someone to buy one. We take it to them, give them a demo and leave it there.” John Fellingham said Cutting Edge topped 36 dealers around New Zealand who stock the American ride-on mower brand. “It’s not just sales but how we present ourselves and our servicing as well. Walker is top of the line. “We had an exceptional year last year which helped immensely. We want to grow
a bit more and get things moving. This win gives us something to fight for next year.” The Fellinghams started the business in 2010, selling and servicing domestic and commercial outdoor power equipment. Their son, Andrew, is now working with them and will eventually take over the
business. They employ three workshop staff and one parts person. Cutting Edge has customers in Raetihi, Ohakune and Hunterville as well as the Whanganui area.
ABOVE: Sue and John Fellingham say their national award for Walker mower sales is an incentive to do even better next year.

A range of walks in wild native bush
T
he Waitahinga Trails are located about 12 kms past Bushy Park, inland from Kai Iwi Beach, and are a collection of walks in native bush catering for various fitness levels. There are various walks of different lengths and is a great half day or full day outing in the hinterlands of Whanganui! A short walk takes you to a lovely picnic spot and a longer trail leads to a disused dam from 1904. Walks range in length and fitness levels so there is something for everyone here! The land was purchased by Whanganui District Council in 1903 in what had to be a visionary plan to solve the burgeoning town’s water problems. The Waitahinga dam was built in 1904 and its height was increased in 1926. It was decommissioned in the 1990s. Whanganui Tramping Club approached the Council and gained
permission to create and maintain these trails for public use as community project to mark the 60th anniversary of the club.
of the trees felled for it are still evident. In places it is hard to believe the fence is over a hundred years old.
Harry’s Ridge and Tom’s Ridge are named to commemorate club members Harry Stimpson (1930-2011) and Tom Luff( 1935-2011).
Waitahinga is still owned and controlled by Council. This includes the commercial pine forest adjacent through the margins of which the Pines Walk passes.
They were stalwarts of exploring these back country areas and were inspirational leaders to many club members who followed them over the years. Most of the walking trails are under native forest canopy. This forest is a combination of original forest including tawa and rimu and very old regeneration dating back to when the land was purchased in 1903. The ancient looking mahoes on the flatter areas are examples of regeneration. You will follow an old fence line for several kilometres on the longer walks. here will be many tall trees at St John’s Hill School in the future and current pupils will have the satisfaction of knowing they planted them. Whanganui business owners Bryce Robb and Mary Cameron of Beaver Tree Services donated $1000 to purchase 417 trees from the Whanganui Prison nursery to be planted at the school. Robb said the donation was about celebrating Arbor Day and wanting to make a “growing gift” to the school. “We know the children here will tend the trees and the prison nursery has given us a great deal so every child got to plant their own tree. “Children in New Zealand always got to plant trees on Arbor Day and we want to bring back the tradition and donate trees to schools every year.”
The planting coincides with the renewal of St John’s Hill’s status as a green-gold Enviroschool. Enviroschools was established to foster a generation of people who instinctively think and act sustainably.
The school celebrated with guests from Whanganui District and Horizons Regional councils as well as Department of Conservation staff who stayed on to help with the plantings after morning tea. The celebration coincided with the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre’s Litter Free Lunch Day and the school has a goal for “100 per cent rubbish-free lunch boxes” with the use of reusable wrap and containers. New Zealand’s first Arbor Day planting was on July 3, 1890 at Greytown. The official date for Arbor Day is now June 5 and most cities can trace their largest trees back to early Arbor Day plantings.

ames K Baxter (1926 – 72). New Zealand poet, wordsmith and literary giant. Battler for social justice. Currently being studied world-wide at universities and schools. Son of Millicent Baxter and WW1 conscientious objector Archibald Baxter. Born in Dunedin Aotearoa/New Zealand and subsequently educated in Whanganui, Aotearoa/New Zealand at Friends’ School. In later years, James K Baxter was to establish a

commune at Jerusalem/Hiruharama on the Whanganui River - a river which has recently been accorded legal personhood status. A group of Whanganui people known as The Guyton Group Trust have come together, with their first major goal to recognise Baxter, acknowledging and embracing his gift to New Zealand literature, and raising awareness in those of later generations, some of whom have little knowledge of Baxter’s literary accomplishments. The Guyton Group Trust’s intentions are to transform Guyton Street into a creative and cultural precinct. The Baxter project sits within this concept and so, the Trust has decided to put their collective ideas into commissioning a full-sized bronze sculpture of Baxter. The artist will be local bronze sculptor, Joan BullockMorrell. Approximately fifty years ago, while Baxter was living at Jerusalem/Hiruharama, Bullock-Morrell sought permission from Baxter to sculpt a bronze bust of him. Permission was granted. A copy of this bust has been generously donated to The Guyton Group Trust by foundreyman, Ross Wilson, and currently sits on the counter of local business, Paige’s Book Gallery. Baxter’s favoured route when he visited Whanganui township was to be dropped at the riverbank where Guyton Street begins, and then walk over the Guyton Street incline and into the central business district.

The last place the artist had a conversation with Baxter was - per chance - on the corner of Guyton and Wicksteed Streets. This was just prior to Baxter’s departure for Auckland, where he subsequently passed away. The artist wants to acknowledge the relevance of both Guyton Street and this corner, and has therefore requested this be the site for the full-sized bronze. Whanganui District Council has approved the statue and the siting. At this point in time The Trust has raised $64 000 of the total goal of $100 000. Once this target is reached and the statue has been installed The Guyton Group Trust will gift the statue to the city. The project will then be further enhanced by a James K Baxter poetry trail, which will make its way along Guyton Street and possibly further afield at a later time.

essica Watkin has taken talents and Whanganui on a journey to the international stage. Watkin joined a talented list of cricketers to promote Whanganui on the international stage when she flew out on the White Ferns’ tour of Ireland and England in May. The 20-year-old allrounder is fiercely loyal to her home town and showed that support by sporting a Whanganui sticker on her bat for the duration of her tour that included a tri-series against England and South Africa that was televised live on Sky Sport. Congratulating Watkin on her selection to the White Ferns Whanganui Mayor Hamish McDouall predicted a long, successful international career. “You have joined an elite group of very talented cricketers who have put Whanganui in the limelight, starting with Harry Cave and Fen Creswell in 1949,” McDouall said. “And in the 1990s Andrew Penn and Murphy Su’a represented the city.” McDouall is an avid cricket fan and researcher who also has international experience, albeit playing a friendly for West Sweden against MCC in Sweden while he was living there. “But in all my research I have yet to find a Whanganui female cricketer who has played at international level - you are the first and I wish you the best of luck. I am sure you have at least 20 years of international cricket in front of you,” McDouall said. Watkin, who prefers her role as a top-order batsman over her considerable bowling skills, had first-hand knowledge of some of her White Ferns teammates
who have also emerged from the annual Whanganui Festival of Cricket held at Victoria Park every summer. Long supported by what is now Whanganui and Partners, the festival’s feature tournament is the national under-15 girls’ event that includes teams from each of the six cricketing regions. Watkin has either played in the tournament or acted as a mentor to the younger set as she got older since 2011. Fellow 2018 White Ferns Hannah Rowe and Amelia Kerr have also emerged from the Whanganui Festival of Cricket agegroup tournament. “Hannah is two years older than me and Amelia a year younger, but we have come through festival together along with other White Ferns not on this particular tour,” Watkin said. “Thanks to the support of what is now Whanganui and Partners, the Whanganui District Council, Dub Dee See (WDC Youth Committee) and the Future Champions Trust that gave me a grant to play at the world indoor champs last year, I have now made the White Ferns and I will do my best to make you proud.” Her journey struck a chord with both girls and boys when she talked at both Whanganui Girls College and Cullinane College on her return. As part of her payback to her mentors at Cricket Whanganui, Watkin gave brief presentations at both colleges in the hope of inspiring teenagers to join a sport that has given her a career. Watkin gave a verbal presentation of her debut for the White Ferns that included a tri-series with England and South Africa.
www.whanganuichronicle.co.nz
She backed her presentation with video of some of her best moments with bat and ball. “Coming from a small town, it is possible to get on the big stage and that’s what happened to me,” Watkin told students. “Over the years I have been told by many that I need to move to Wellington, Auckland or Christchurch if I am to get ahead in the game, but I am living proof you can make it from Whanganui. The women’s game has grown so much in recent years and I have now got a contract with Cricket New Zealand, it is my job to play cricket. “I have just returned from Ireland and England and soon I will travel to Australia to play, then the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean to play on a tropical island that’s pretty cool. Then India come here to play over our summer. “I started young, but it’s not too late. If you are keen on sport I can thoroughly recommend cricket, they really look after you,” Watkin said. Watkin’s hometown coach and mentor Dilan Raj said the response was great, with students taking up an invitation to talk to Watkin after her presentations and to sign up with Cricket Whanganui. “We will follow that up with practical hands-on cricket sessions within each school’s sporting programmes,” Raj said. IS INSULATION STILL IMPORTANT IN SUMMER? I think one of the best examples of insulation at work is if you venture up into your loft. If you visit a well-insulated loft in winter, with lots of insulation between the joists, you will notice the area is really cold this is because the heat is being blocked from reaching the loft by all that thick insulation below you. If you visit this same loft during the summer months, you will notice that it is really hot up there. That is because the heat from the sun has warmed up the roof and loft space, but the insulation is slowing the movement of heat from the loft space down into the house. You will also notice that a poorly insulated roof room (loft conversion) is really cold in winter but also really hot in summer another great example of how insulation helps to moderate the temperature in a home. Solid wall insulation does exactly the same thing! It means there is no need to put on the AC during the summer months helping to save you money then too! I hope this illustrates the importance of insulation not just as a winter energy saver, but also to help keep the home cool in the summer months. The important thing to take away is that insulation is a barrier, and that barrier will help minimise heat from transferring across it, whatever the direction!

he Virg ginia Lake Aviary is a “free flight” aviary - meaning you can walk around in amoungst the birds! - and a favourite of children and families alike. Generations have now visited the Virginia Lake birds, and many an hour been spent watching and wondering! It is one of many gifts that have been presented to the city by local philanthropists and volunteers. The present aviary was officially opened on August 12, 1979, along with the dovecote which stands nearby. The concept of a free-flight design, which allows visitors upclose walk-through access to the birds, was a novel idea in the late 1970s, and led the development of other such aviaries in New Zealand. It now has 400 birds of 32 species from a variety of countries including Australia, Indonesia, Afghanistan, India, Burma, China and Japan. You’ll see pheasants, guinea fowl, yellow and red-crowned kakariki
(parakeets), numerous different parrots and sulphur-crested cockatoos. This is the third aviary that has been at the Virginia Lake Reserve with the first erected in 1942 as a gift from Mr and Mrs Larsen of the Fosters Hotel. There is no entry charge and nearby is a fenced children’s play area and the “Punchbowl” staged amphitheatre, a project developed by the Wanganui North
Rotary Club. The aviary is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm every day. The Virginia Lake Aviary is not the first to have been erected at the reserve, with two earlier aviaries having been built, the earliest dating back to 1942. It was a fivesection facility similar to aviaries still in use elsewhere in the country. This second Virginia Lake aviary stood between the Winter Gardens and the carpark, and when opened in 1960 was home to 60 birds. Council records contain many letters of thanks to local residents for donations of aviary birds, including finches, canaries and parakeets. There was even for many years a kea amongst the collection – before rules about keeping native birds changed. www.visitwhanganui.nz LEFT: A free flight aviary with 400 birds from around the world!

elcome to the world’s most intelligent small city. Whanganui has come out top in the Intelligent Community Forum’s “Small Places, Big Ambitions” list of the top communities with populations under 50,000. It means we’re doing things smarter. The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) is an international think tank which helps communities adapt to a digital economy. Each year it selects the 21 cities from its membership which best demonstrate the forum’s mission. Whanganui has been named in the top 21 every year since 2013 and in 2016 was placed in the top seven. This is the first time it has topped the rankings and means we’re doing things smarter. The ICF “By the Numbers” series, which covers communities with populations ranging from less than 50,000 to more than a million, is a guide to the relative strengths of communities in the ICF network. It incorporates results from the Smart21, Top7 and Intelligent Community of the Year evaluations. The “Small Places, Big Ambitions” list was rounded out by one Australian, four Canadian and four American communities. Marianne Archibald is the director of Archibald & Co and helps communities around New Zealand develop digital strategies. Now also the chief executive of the Whanganui Chamber of Commerce and Industry, she has been involved in the Intelligent Community Forum since Whanganui’s first entry into it. “It’s fantastic to see Whanganui ranked in first place for communities with a population of 50,000 or less,” Archibald said. “We did a huge amount of work to get to Top7 status by 2016 and were working alongside communities with much bigger populations.” Whanganui achieved Top7 Intelligent Community status through projects such as ensuring fibre was built early in Whanganui, getting many of the more remote areas of Whanganui connected to fixed wireless, working with Inspire Net to get free WiFi around the city connected through the CCTV network, organising a separate network to be built in Whanganui

for the internet of things (IoT), setting up a Computer Clubhouse, having one of the best Computers in Homes programmes in New Zealand, running GovHack, hosting three technology expos and getting The Mind Lab to run postgraduate courses for teachers on digital and collaborative learning. “One of the best aspects of the ICF application process was that we had to talk to each sector and find out what they were doing. This meant we connected with education, business and government, including looking across council departments where some really cool technology was being implemented. It’s called the triple helix model and it’s really hard to do but the rewards on a community level are massive.” Archibald’s experience and passion for the sector is taking her to the national and international stage. In June she attended the Intelligent Community Forum Summit in London where she was a member of a panel that discussed big data. “As Whanganui, and New Zealand, isn’t yet doing much work with big data, I talked about our connection using small data; that is, understanding
individual customers’ needs and using that information in areas like niche manufacturing,” Archibald said. “It was great to be able to tell the audience that the London Ambulance Service officers are wearing safety helmets made here. Like Sir Paul Callaghan said, New Zealand can’t compete on the huge mass-produced front - our talent is in the weird (niche) stuff.” In October Archibald will be a panel member at the Blockworks conference in Auckland. The panel will look at the connection between blockchain technology and smart cities and the opportunities that could come from this new technology. Blockchain’s attraction is its security because each block in a blockchain is a digital, tamper-proof record of information. It is built using cryptography, a way of storing and transmitting data so it can only be read and processed by the recipient, meaning it is effective in managing information such as identity, finance, social and medical records, transport and supply chain details. “It’s incredibly exciting and always a privilege to represent our region on the national and global stage.”

uccess keeps coming for Whanganui High School students as they have won the M3S: Massey Manawatu Maths and Stats Competition for a second consecutive year. The winning team of Ben Power, Ahimsha Saravanapavan and Nanea Schurhammer faced stiff competition from 22 other teams from Taranaki to Kapiti. The competition has been running for five years and this is Whanganui High School’s third win. It tests teams on problems that require skill and time management.
Massey University senior mathematics tutor, Dr Cami Sawyer, said it was great to see the students working hard and sharing ideas with each other to solve challenging problems. “Days like this provide mathematically gifted students a chance to showcase their talent, work in groups and see mathematics and statistics as more than subjects, but actual study paths at university and careers. “These days provide better reflections of real mathematics careers, as working in groups to solve problems is more reflective of the industry than sitting at a desk alone solving problems in isolation with a three-hour time limit.” This year, the format of the competition for Year 12 students changed to a quiz-like format with five rounds. Teams got all the questions at once and had fixed periods of time to answer them, ranging from 10 to 12 minutes. Head of the institute of fundamental sciences professor Martin Hazelton hoped the students would stick with these disciplines. “The jobs we have today and increasingly the jobs of the future will need the skills you have demonstrated today,” he said. “So keep at it in class and it is going to pay off in your future careers.” LEFT: The winning Whanganui High School team in action - from left, Ben Power, Ahimsha Saravanapavan and Nanea Schurhammer.

he tale of a Whanganui woman who lived during World War I is to be told as part of a global writing initiative. Whanganui-based writer Jayne Workman was chosen as one of 100 writers around the world for the 100 Days project, in which one piece of writing will be published every day for the 100 days leading up to November 11 - the day WWI ended 100 years ago. A new form of writing, called a centena, has been created for the project. Pieces must be 100 words and start and finish with the same three words. “I decided I wanted to write about somebody from Whanganui,” Workman said. “That was the first sort of decision really and I wanted to write about a woman because I thought that would be interesting.” After research in Wellington and Whanganui, Workman found a number of interesting stories but chose the tale of Mag Wilson after she discovered a pile of her letters. Most of the letters were sent to Wilson by her brother, Arthur, while he was on duty in Europe.
“It just had a huge emotional connection, holding the letters in my hand. It must have been Mag’s personal collection of stuff because there were letters and there were also telegrams from her fiance telling her when he was coming back. “At that point something really appealed to me about this sort of invisible, quiet story of life here away from the noise of the war. “She was possibly less visible, in a way New Zealand was less visible, and I just really wanted a reason to explore that more.” Wilson’s brother Arthur died in the last 100 days of the war and Workman said she found one moment between brother and sister particularly tragic.
“One of the most poignant things that Arthur wrote I think was just saying ‘I looked for you in the crowds’ when he was sailing off on the ship from Wellington. I hadn’t even thought about that ... soldiers would have been there and there were crowds and crowds on Wellington harbour but they wouldn’t be able to see their own family probably. I just thought ‘gosh that’s so sad’ and that would have been the last time she would have seen him.” Workman described her centena as a tale of “everyday life.” Workman’s centena will be the first New Zealand-based centena released. Workman discovered Mag Wilson was the youngest of six children and her parents were Scottish immigrants. Wilson was a tailor and lived in Westmere, St John’s Hill and on Guyton St at some point. Workman said there were several letters addressed to Wilson at an “Alton Villa” believed to be around 12 to 16 Brassey Rd.

A
glimpse behind the scenes of Wanganui Veterinary Services has proven a real eye opener. In its bid to deliver a quality service to a community they are passionate about, upskilling their staff is paramount. Firstly, almost all support staff employed by the mixed animal veterinary practice are graduates of the Vet Nursing course delivered on-site by Whanganui-based private training establishment Ag Challenge. The Vet Nursing course is the only one of its kind in New Zealand delivered on-site at a working veterinary clinic. But that is just one facet of the ongoing training. It forms a solid foundation that allows all staff through to the receptionist team to interact with the community on a knowledgeable level. Then there is the more serious ongoing training within the practice that allows the vets themselves to meet a mandatory requirement to continue their professional development and maintain their Veterinary
Practicing Certificates. Managing Director Tom Dinwiddie said much of that is done off-site and even offshore in some instances. “Each vet usually has an area of interest they prefer to focus on. For example we sent our equine Vet Wilna Labuschagne to Australia recently to upskill herself in horse dentistry, while companion animal Vet Rebecca Kinley attended a course in Auckland regarding applications of ultrasound in companion animal practice,” Dinwiddie said. “Then Chelsea Underwood, a companion animal Vet from the Vets on Carlton clinic went to Australia off her own bat to study acupuncture. These vets are able to spend time with fellow vets from around the world and then share notes with fellow staff members on their return. “It’s a valuable tool to have and they can each put their unique individual talents learned to good use here.” Over and above specific study courses, the New Zealand Veterinary Association
host conferences that feature different streams of topics allowing staff to pick and choose what area suits them best. Mixed animal Vet Gemma Pouls, who began with the practice in January, has already attended a Super Grad course to upskill. “This is like a refresher course for graduates and they can compare notes with their peers. And Hein Stoop, a companion animal Vet, has been away to study orthopaedics, and also enrolled in online study. It’s this spread of knowledge that allows us to do much more of the work here in Whanganui therefore having fewer referral cases. “There is an expectation out there that we provide a high standard veterinary service that looks after the community’s much loved pets, and we do. Again it is the opportunity to engage in continued professional development that allows us to deliver on that expectation,” Dinwiddie said.

anganui veterinary Services (WVS) has a rich and nurturing history caring for a community in a place it calls home. Since 1945, the practice has dedicated itself to the health of perhaps the community’s most treasured loves – their pets. Its beginnings were very much farm orientated when the then Wanganui Vet Club was launched. It was funded initially by farmers in the region contributing a levy and then through membership fees. In 1989 the club and WVS had a 50/50 share of the business until 2001 when the services were separated from the buildings and grounds. WVS took over full responsibility for animal services. Today the business is comprised of two vet clinics – Wanganui Veterinary Services on Somme Pde and Vets On Carlton in Gonville, as well as Wanganui Farm Supplies, Pet Essentials Wanganui, Pet Essentials Palmerston North and Pet Essentials Manufacturing (a dog roll manufacturing plant based in Castlecliff).
With 12 Vets employed, they are a mixture of companion animal veterinarians and large animal veterinarians, caring for both small and large animals. The seven-day-a-week, 24 hour service with after hours capability provides comprehensive and nurturing medical care for animals within the larger Whanganui region. Over the years WVS has evolved and as recently as 2014 it transferred the Heads Rd Clinic to Vets On Carlton, a purpose-built clinic on Carlton Ave at the junction of Alma Rd. It also runs two Pet Essentials shops providing an extensive range of animal products, food and equipment – one in Whanganui, the other in Albert St, Palmerston North. In 2006 it took over Wanganui Farm Supplies in Church Place and then set up the Pet Essentials Manufacturing factory making dog rolls on Heads Rd in Castlecliff. Another branch of the business is Vetcare
Grazing, which grew from small beginnings in the mid 90’s to having around 15,000 heifers under its management in the Hawkes Bay, Taranaki and Whanganui regions. Vetcare Grazing was set up in 1995 by then WVS Veterinarian John Pickering, who has since retired to Hawkes Bay, but remains a consultant to the business. Wanganui Veterinary Services is truly a locally-owned company that has invested in the community and people of its hometown. It is proud to be in a position to care for the Whanganui community’s most prized possessions – its animals. The practice was originally staffed by just one Vet dealing with horses and cattle and on the odd occasion, a dog. Times have changed. The companion animal services has continued to expand and is a significant part of what WVS does. As a community we are fortunate to have retained the services of a very skilled, dedicated and experienced team.

ohamed Belkouadssi makes cement tiles. His is not a name that trips lightly off the Kiwi tongue, which probably explains why the Whanganui artisan, originally from Marrakesh, Morocco, calls himself Moa, and his business, Moabell Design.
He started calling himself Moa long before he came to New Zealand, and, at the time, had not heard of the extinct, flightless bird. He was living and working in Spain and the Spanish pronunciation of Mohamed was hard on the ear. When he met his New Zealand partner, Catherine Sleyer, she explained the significance of his sobriquet. Moa lived in Barcelona for about 20 years, after leaving Marrakesh in 1989 to seek a better life. He originally intended to join some student friends in Italy but stopped in Barcelona and stayed, working in construction. “Barcelona was preparing for the Olympic Games so there was a lot of work there,” he says. His interest in tiles comes from his childhood in Morocco, and in his work in Barcelona he saw a lot of beautiful tile patterns. “In Barcelona, in the 19th century, there were four or five houses making tiles in competition (with each other). It was the time of art nouveau in Catalonia and there were lots of designers and artists designing tiles for them.”
His home in Spain was more than a century old and the patterned tiles were as fresh as new. While Moa makes some of his own designs, he also uses patterns from catalogues he has collected in his travels. He makes cement tiles in a process called encaustic or hydraulic. Each tile is made individually in a single mould, one tile at a time, and his patterns are created using zinc stencils he has created himself, by hand, out of necessity. There are hundreds of them, from the simple but effective, to the elaborate and intricate. The tile making technique he uses originated in the south of France with the discovery of portland cement, and was swiftly picked up by craftsmen and designers in Catalonia. Moa is the only hydraulic cement tile maker in New Zealand, making European tiles in Whanganui. There are distributors importing from Europe and Asia, but Moa is the sole maker in this country. He says with the advent of terrazzo and ceramic tiles, the cement tile lost favour and, in some places, disappeared. He sees his work as a revival of the technique. “In countries like Morocco, South America and Vietnam, people are still making these tiles.” The patterns - and the tiles - are extremely hard-wearing and are suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
www.whanganuichronicle.co.nz
Moa makes the tiles upside down, starting with the pattern, using one of his many stencils to separate the colours. Fine cement and coloured oxides create the hues. He uses about 25 colours. The consistency of the coloured cements are exactly alike, so when the stencil is removed, the still liquid colours stay precisely in position. He fixes the colours with a mixture of dry cement and sand, heavy on the cement. The third layer is a different mix and slightly damp. A hydraulic press completes the first part of the process. The tile, by now able to be handled, is left to dry before being cured in water and dried again. “I make them hard and strong,” he says. Moa is very proud of his work. His tiles are not just sand and cement. Added to the mix in measured amounts can be marble in sand or powder form, the latter with the look and feel of talc. It’s an art of precision, chemistry and geometry, and a prerequisite is the love of beauty. Moa had to jump through a few bureaucratic hoops to stay in Whanganui with his family, but he’s here now and loves it. BELOW: Moa starts the tile making process by putting coloured cement into a stencil.

While most people around the country celebrate Matariki, Puanga is the star that Whanganui iwi look towards to signal the New Year
MP read te reo Whanganui’s Davis Library celebrated Puanga by inviting guest readers to the children’s library. Te Tai Hauauru MP Adrian Rurawhe took a turn at reading books written in te reo for an audience of pre-schoolers. While the younger children were more intent on moving the book trolleys around, a group of 4-year-olds gave Rurawhe their full attention as he read them pukapuka (books) about kumara and farm animals. “It has been a long time since I read to a group of tamariki and it has been very enjoyable,” Rurawhe said. He received enthusiastic applause and a waiata from the children of Mangawhero Te Kohanga Reo in Guyton St. The Puanga Purakau (stories) organised by the children’s library team was one of a number of events celebrating Puanga in June and July.
ABOVE: Politician Adrian Rurawhe took time out to read to pre-schoolers at the Davis Library
Group exhibition Whanganui’s Manawa ora Maaori Artists Collective and Gallery on Guyton came together to celebrate Puanga with a group exhibition. Naani Waitai, Tanea Ngapeka, Rere Sutherland, Mina Bourke, Ta Piri and Rena Star created an exhibition that celebrated the Maori New Year and their tipuna (ancestors) in their own unique styles. Ta Piri’s round, acrylic canvas Shapeshifter is a depiction of living in different dimensions. “It is my interpretation of how we are connected to our tipuna and how they guide us,” she says.
Rere Sutherland’s large canvas depicts the Matariki or Pleiades formation with the Puanga star shining on the right. “I was thinking about our kaitiaki - our guardians - and how we must become kaitiaki for younger generations. “I have used glow paint so the star formation can be seen in the dark.” Tanea Ngapeka has produced more works in her blue series incorporating jigsaw pieces and has turned her hand to crochet to produce Rere, a giant raffia bird taking flight in the gallery front window. “It’s symbolic of the new beginnings we celebrate at this time of year.” Next to Ngapeka’s bird is Mina Bourke’s star made with repurposed materials and representing the Puanga star. It is one of five mixed media pieces Bourke produced for the exhibition using paints, flax, laser cut wood and a sprinkling of diamante to depict both the night sky and the harvesting that is part of winter solstice celebrations. “I love the positive and negative effects I get with using the laser-cut pieces and Marilyn and Marty Vreede have kindly let me use their equipment for my work.” Naani Waitai’s Tohu Taketake series comprises five black and white digital prints depicting marks placed by Maori chieftains on Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Rena Star’s two Kaitiakitanga canvases in bright acrylics and gold leaf depict her tipuna as kaitiaki watching over the present with bird symbolism to the fore.

Inflatable Starlab provided virtual journey The Whanganui Regional Museum offered opportunities to learn all about Puanga, the Aotearoa New Year, in conjunction with astronomy, in an inflatable Starlab. The sessions included korero about how Maori celebrate Aotearoa New Year and how we can all celebrate as a community during this time. An inflatable Starlab provided a virtual journey to discover more about the stars that signal Puanga and Matariki, Aotearoa New Year. Participants could sit back in the Starlab while thousands of stars shone in a simulation of the night sky while discovering how to use the stars to track the seasons and to find your way. Matariki has been absent from our night sky since early May, but Puanga is still evident in the west after sunset. Matariki will return to the morning sky very soon, whereas Puanga is already visible just before dawn. Each day, these stars will rise slightly earlier and will be easier to spot in the darker pre-dawn sky. There were three dates for Starlab sessions in June and sessions were more suited to school age children, so attendees had to be 5 and over. There was also opportunities to stargaze through the Ward Observatory’s historic giant telescope in St Hill St in June and July.

he sacred song Whanganui, Whanganui was naturally appropriate as the opening hymn for the confirmations of 11 Nga Paerangi whanau on their Kaiwhaiki Marae on Sunday, June 3.
The song was written by the late Morvin Simon MNZM who was not only a nationally acclaimed Maori composer, but Kaiwhaiki’s choirmaster and kapa haka leader. Confirmation Mass was celebrated by Bishop Charles Drennan from Palmerston North and Fr Marcus Francis, the Parish Priest of the Catholic Parish of Whanganui - Te Parihi Katorika ki Whanganui. After the powhiri the candidates met with Bishop Drennan for a mihi, enabling the candidates and bishop to get to know each other before confirmation. Singing Ave Maria, family and friends followed the candidates into the whare Kiritahi where Mass was held. Tawaroa Ponga carried the St Peter Chanel banner, Te Ao Maro Baron-McRitchie was cross bearer, Moetahi Baron-McRitchie the Lectionary and Te Rangi Tautahi Ponga was the candle bearer. “All reminiscent of the Hui Aranga Easter Hui rosary processions, where St Peter Chanel’s Club from Kaiwhaiki has participated for over 70 years,” said Sr Makareta Tawaroa rsj.

t may not be as popular as its flashy cousin - The War Memorial Tower - over on Durie Hill, but the Bastia Hill Water Tower is another part of Whanganui’s heritage worth checking out… Designed to reflect the arched aqueducts and towers of the water supply networks of ancient Rome, the tower was built in 1927 to service both Bastia and Durie Hill. There are three floors – not only for access – but also to stop the outer columns from bowing outwards under the weight of the water in the top tank, because 2000 tonnes of water is fairly heavy!
With the large Christmas star which can be seen at night throughout much of the city, it is a bit more ‘bling-bling’ than the Durie tower. Another claim to fame is that at 50 metres the Bastia Hill water tower is taller than its sibling over on Durie. To be precise, the height of the bottom of the Bastia Hill water tank is 55 metres above the highest part of Durie Hill. Building began in late 1925, and finished mid-April in 1927. The Bastia Hill Water Tower cost of £22,900. The tank was supplied with an automatic electric
pump station, previously drawing water from the town supply. The dome’s purpose was to protect the water from the sun, and prevent “wobbling” of the tower’s secondary columns from potential wind gusts. The water tower received a thorough maintenance check-up and concrete refurbishment in the 1990s. Note that the tower is NOT open to the public, but closer viewing can be had from walking or driving up Georgetti Road. Bastia Hill was named by an early settler, Mr Augustine Georgetti who originally came from the town of Bastia on the island of Corsica. Now the tower remains a significant landmark for Whanganui and carries telecommunications equipment. In pre-European times Bastia Hill was the site of a large fortified pa, Taumahaaute. www.visitwhanganui.nz LEFT: Bastia Hill Water Tower - fabulous architecture from 1927.

new landscape supplier has joined the growing community of businesses in Castlecliff ’s Rakau
Road. Sort It Out Landscape Supplies, run by Rose Stokes, has been open since mid-May. It is located at the same site as Camtract Civil Contracting, operated by Stokes’ partner, Daren Bendle. “We had the civil contracting business and we had always talked about one day doing a landscape business as well,” Stokes said. “When Loaders closed their landscape supplies business, we saw an opportunity. We had to move the civil contracting business from where it was so we decided to purchase this land and set up both businesses here.” They stock bulk landscape products including bark, stone, compost and garden mix as well as bagged products, such as ready mix concrete, and
weed matting and polythene. Stokes also has a good supply of macrocarpa and gum firewood. Sort It Out is one of the only stockists of Simply Wrought Iron products which are made in Whanganui. The business delivers orders or customers can hire a trailer to take home a couple of scoops of the bulk products. “People are loving us being on this side of town because there’s been no landscape supply business here,” Stokes said.

eveloping a system that reminds workers to think first before rushing in has netted Whanganui’s Terri Coopland a national health and safety award. Coopland, who is health and safety manager at Mars Petcare in Whanganui, won the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management’s health and safety practitioner of the year award at the Workplace Health and Safety Awards 2018. The Take 2 system she developed is based on different lengths of time it takes to stop and think about an action, check instructions, assess a task, implement controls and change a process. The system has led to a reduction of more than 50 per cent in injuries in two years. “It reminds anyone on site, before doing a job, to stop and think before you dive in and was designed mainly for breakdowns in the factory,” Coopland said. “It’s more important to do it safely than to rush in to get things back up and running. Think whether you have the knowledge and equipment to do it so you have everything together before you start doing the job. “Time isn’t the key factor. Don’t put yourself at risk.” Coopland believes the system could be applied more widely than the workplace and has had some discussions with ACC and Safer Whanganui about how it could be used elsewhere. She said it was important to focus on people first “then the systems fall into place”. “It’s not just about compliance with the health and safety regulations. For me, it’s looking after people the right way and making sure they are safe. If you do that properly, then you will be complying anyway.” Coopland’s commitment to improving health and safety standards led to her being appointed chairwoman of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management Grading Committee in 2016.

ilson’s Hunting and Outdoors is your local store selling a wide range of hunting, fishing, camping, shooting, archery, reloading, and sausage-making gear.
If that sounds like a very varied range of products, that’s because it is. Whether you are an avid hunter, a weekend fisherman or simply want to take your kids camping, you will find what you need here. Wilson’s stock a wide range of outdoor clothing for all conditions, and even sausage-making products to make the most of every bit of that deer you got in the weekend. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and as long as you don’t mind a side of banter with your thermals, you are bound to get on just fine. Their tongue-in-cheek humour extends to signs around the shop claiming, “Your wife called, she said it’s ok,” and “Sometimes it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission.” Although, judging by the good reviews on their Facebook page, almost as many women shop there as men. Whether you’re a visitor to Whanganui or a local, get down to Wilson’s Hunting and Outdoors, and make the most of your outdoor adventures in our beautiful region.
