Mayor Robertson Names ‘Jack Uppal Street’ After South Asian Leader
Vancouver City Council voted unanimously to designate ‘Jack Uppal Street’ in South Vancouver’s River District, the first street in Vancouver history named after a South Asian Canadian. The street name was put forward by the Civic Asset Naming Committee to recognize Jagat “Jack Singh Uppal’s legacy to the local South Asian community, and his contributions and achievements in public life. “I am delighted to honour Jack Uppal’s legacy as an extraordinary leader in our City, said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “Mr. Uppal dedicated his life to standing up for equal rights and opportunities. He was at the forefront of paving the way for a more equal Vancouver, free from racism and discrimination. Mr. Uppal founded Goldwood Industries on Mitchell Island, one of the oldest sawmills in B.C., and the first owned and operated by H.R.
MacMillan. The Mill was located on the north arm of the Fraser, on land that is now the River District. The choice to commemorate Mr. Uppal in that neighbourhood not only reflects its rich history and culture, it celebrates his legacy and achievements as an early activist for
human rights in Vancouver’s South Asian Community. "Naming a street in celebration of my father shows how much respect the City of Vancouver and the Canadian Society has for him. My father would have been thrilled and honoured that a street was
named for his accomplishments, said Cindy Bains, the late Jack Uppal's daughter. "He, along with other elders in the South Asian community, set the foundation to stand up to racism and discrimination, and it is our responsibility to honour their hardships.

B.C. greenhouse growers eligible for carbon tax relief VICTORIA - British Columbia's commercial greenhouse operators have until April 29, 2016, to apply for the 2016 greenhouse carbon tax relief grants. The annual grant covers 80% of the carbon tax that commercial greenhouse growers paid on the natural gas and propane they used for greenhouse heating and CO2 production in the previous year. Commercial vegetable and floriculture producers, wholesale nurseries and forest seedling nurseries are eligible to apply for the grant. The Ministry of Agriculture expects the processing of applications to be completed by June 30, 2016. Since making the greenhouse carbon tax relief grant a permanent program in 2013, commercial greenhouse operators have received significant rebates from the government. In 2015, the program
provided $7.1 million in grants to greenhouse growers and $7.1 million in 2014. The commercial greenhouse sector is a successful, growing industry. In 2014, growers produced more than 124,000 tonnes of vegetables, bringing in almost $297 million in revenue. B.C.'s floriculture, nursery
SURREY — Surrey residents will have to "stay tuned" to find out what slice the city will get from a $460 million federal funding pie allotted for public transit plans in British Columbia. Jonathan Wilkinson, Liberal MP for North Vancouver and parliamentary secretary for environment and climate change was in Surrey Thursday, flanked by local Liberal MPs, to announce that the federal government has earmarked "well over" $10 billion over next the three years "to projects Canadians need the most." The "historic investments," he said, are in public transit, social infrastructure and water-related projects. "Public transit is a very important focus of our phase one investments."
All told, $120 billion will be invested in infrastructure over the next 10 years with $3.4 billion over the next three years allocated to a new public transit infrastructure fund "to improve public transit systems across Canada." B.C. is set to receive $460 million for public transit projects, with the federal government funding up to 50 per cent of project costs and the provincial, municipal and territorial governments providing the difference.

Vancouver, BC: Police are continuing their investigations into a sexual assault and a series of suspicious incidents that have occurred since the beginning of March within the University of British Columbia Vancouver Campus (UBC). On March 25, 2016 at approximately 10:00 pm, a female student was walking alone in the 3200 block of Wesbrook Mall when she was allegedly approached from behind and sexually assaulted by an unknown man who suddenly emerged from a wooded area. Investigators of the University Detachment with support from the E Division Major Crime’s Criminal Investigations Unit are continuing their investigation of this incident, and the series of suspicious incidents. These investigations are a priority for University RCMP and they are committed to apprehending the person or person(s) responsible for these incidents. In addition to the E Division Major Crime’s Criminal Investigations Unit, University RCMP have engaged the services of other specialized RCMP resources for the Lower Mainland District. “We acknowledge that these incidents are unsettling for those residing or visiting UBC’s Vancouver Campus. We are working diligently to identify and apprehend the person or persons responsible for these events and invite anyone who has any information regarding these incidents to contact police,” says Sgt. Annie Linteau, spokesperson for the Lower Mainland District. “Regardless of gender, we need to do all we can to ensure our personal safety while providing police with the crucial information they need to ensure those who compromise our safety are held accountable.” University RCMP are also working closely with Campus Security and UBC to ensure the safety of all students and visitors to the campus, and continue to consult with other partner police agencies to share information and identify any links to similar incidents in other jurisdictions. As always, regardless of location, police encourage those walking alone late in the evening or early in the morning to remain vigilant and take every precaution to enhance their own personal safety. While the RCMP recognize that the onus is on all of us to ensure we treat others in a respectful manner, Police recommend the public, including those living in residences, to consider the following safety tips: Lock windows and room/unit doors even when absent for a short amount of time. • Don’t prop open residences’ exterior doors. • Don’t allow strangers to tailgate you into residence buildings. • Walk with a friend or consider using UBC’s AMS Safewalk Program. • Be familiar with the location of the UBC Blue Phones to connect with UBC Campus Security. • Beware of your surroundings by avoiding the use of headphones and the distracted use of cellular telephones when in public places. • Report promptly all suspicious persons and activities to the RCMP. • Stay informed by monitoring Campus Safety Alerts.

Kelly Singh Mahal, soccer coach, sentenced to 7 years in U.S. prison for seeking sex with minor Former soccer coach and Surrey resident Kelly Singh Maha has been sentenced to seven years in a U.S. prison for seeking sex with someone he believed to be a 12-year old girl. Mahal, 47, will be required to register as a sex offender in the U.S, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice. The U.S. will deport Mahal, who was also a facilities manager for a Vancouver tech firm, back to Canada after he serves his sentence, with the requirement that he be under supervision for 10 years. The assistant U.S. Attorney's office says it has seen an exponential growth in the number of children being victimized. "What was concerning to
homeland security was the the willingness of Mr. Mahal to cross an international border in order to have sex with a 12 year old child. That's why this case was prosecuted federally," assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Vaughn told CBC. Mahal fell for a sting operation in 2015 where a U.S. homeland security agent pretended to be a 12-year old girl willing to have sex with him. He was arrested in February 2015 after traveling to Burlington, Washington to meet with "the girl." Mahal, who used to coach a Surrey boys' soccer team, pleaded guilty in January 2016 of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a

minor. Mahal's sentence is part of U.S. authorities' efforts to protect children
from sexual predators. "This sentence should serve as a stern warning to those who mistakenly believe cyberspace affords them anonymity, and they can use the Internet to sexually exploit children with impunity," said Bradford Bench, a special agent in charge of homeland security in Seattle. Homeland security has arrested more than 10,000 people since it started sting operations in 2003, targeting sexual predators. About 2,300 people were arrested in 2015 alone by special agents under the initiative, immigration authorities told CBC in January. -CBC News

Out to woo NRIs, Capton Amrinder Singh to tour US, Canada In a move aimed at countering the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) influence on NRIs and garnering the Punjabi diaspora’s support for the Congress ahead of the 2017 Assembly polls, PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh will embark on an 18-day tour to the US and Canada from April 19. Accompanied by a battery of party leaders, including Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans and former Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) chief Vikramjit Chaudhary, Amarinder will first land in Chicago and then travel to Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles and San Francisco before winding up his tour on May 7. Talking to The Tribune here today, the PPCC chief said, “NRIs are looking up to AAP. My aim is to neutralise that
and positively project the agenda of my party.” He further said: “My plan is to stay in each city for two days. We will hold a rally on the first day, followed by small
gatherings the next day.” Amarinder said his wife, Congress MLA Preneet Kaur, would return from her Australia-New Zealand tour on April 6. She will now undertake a tour
Toronto man attacked, taunted for wearing turban in Quebec City A Toronto man assaulted in Quebec City is speaking out following what he believes was a hate-motivated attack. Supninder Khehra and his friend were visiting Quebec City over the Easter long weekend when a group of men began yelling at them from a parked car. Khehra is Sikh and wears a turban. He told CTV Toronto that the men taunted him for wearing his turban. “Mostly it was in French, but they were using certain words in English as well,” Khehra said. “But when they were pointing [to my head] they were referencing my turban.” Supininder Khehra and his friend were visiting Quebec City over the Easter long weekend when a group of men began yelling at them from a parked car. Khehra and his friend, who were
trying to flag a cab at the time, continued walking away. That’s when the men approached Khehra in their car. The men jumped out of the vehicle and began to attack Khehra. They punched him and threw him to the ground, causing his turban to fall off. Khehra’s friend videotaped the entire incident. Remarkably, just as the men were driving away, a police car passed by and intervened. Khehra told CTV Toronto he sustained injuries to his face, hands and back. He said that the attack has caused
him emotional trauma, but that he doesn’t fear the men who attacked him. “There are certain bad elements, like [the attackers], but I am still proud to live in Canada,” Khehra said. He is currently recovering back home in Toronto. Quebec City police arrested two men in connection with the attack. One man has since been released. The other man faces charges of assaulting a citizen and threatening a police officer. Police said the investigation is ongoing and there may be additional charges laid. Rachael D'Amore, CTV Toronto
to Italy, Germany and the UK. On the Akalis’ move to honour Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal with the title of ‘Saviour of Punjab’s waters’, the former CM quipped, “They must have seen him holding a gadwi (utensil). I protected waters of the state for 12 years and he has done nothing but mishandle the issue for four consecutive days.” On the advice given to him by his poll strategist Prashant Kishor to shed the ‘Maharaja’ tag, Amarinder replied with a smile, “I had dropped it long ago when I contested my first election in 1977. People only call me Captain.” Amarinder rejected reports of his grandson Nirvan Singh entering politics. “He does not have any interest in politics and instead wants to get into the United Nations.” ‘Infighting being taken seriously’ Jalandhar: The issues of infighting and indiscipline in the Congress were taken up by party workers with PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh during a workers’ meet here on Saturday. Answering media queries later, the PPCC chief admitted that infighting existed in the party at the upper level — not at the middle or lower levels — and it was now being taken seriously. Amarinder referred to cases of indiscipline by Congress leaders Bir Devinder Singh and Jagmeet Brar. “I have made a recommendation against Brar to the AICC,” Amarinder said. On new Rajya Sabha members Partap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo, he quipped: “Changa hoya dono Punjab politics to bahar chale gaye (Good that both are out of Punjab politics).” — TNS

21 Sikhs out of Centre’s blacklist Tribune News Service, Chandigarh Ripudaman Singh Malik, accused (and later acquitted) in the Kanishka bombing in 1985; Resham Singh Babbar, accused of being one of the conspirators in former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination case; and Massa Singh, an aide of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, are among the 21 Sikhs whose names have been struck off the “blacklist” of Sikhs by the Union Home Ministry. With the names of 21 Sikhs — some involved in terrorist activities in Punjab in the 1980s and 1990s and others having separatist political leanings — being struck off the socalled blacklist, these persons will now be able to come to India, though some of them may have to face trial in criminal cases pending against them. The idea, say top government officials, is to bring these people back into the mainstream by making them pledge their allegiance to the Indian Constitution. The former head of Dal Khalsa
International Manmohan Singh Bajaj; member of the Panthic committee that organised Sarbat Khalsa in 1986 Dhamma Singh alias Balbir; Babbar Khalsa International activist Avtar Singh Sanghera are also among the prominent Khalistan ideologues whose names have been struck off the blacklist. The others who will now not face any visa restrictions from the Indian Government, post their delisting are — Satbir Singh Bhullar, Satnam Singh Johl, Gian Singh Sandhu, Daljit Singh Sekhon, Mokham Singh Bagria, Parshottam Singh Pamma, Gurwinder Singh Rana (associated with AISSF), Gurmeet Singh Aulakh, Prof Uday Singh, Parminder Singh Bal, Raghbir Singh Johar, Amrik Singh Gill and Bhupinder Singh Johal. With the deletion of these 21 names from the secret blacklist — prepared by the Government of India more than three decades ago, only 22 names remain on this blacklist now. With the crucial Punjab Assembly elections round the corner, the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat — an affiliate of
the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh — has managed to almost prune this list to an almost negligible number. Punjab Chief Minister and chief patron of Shiromani Akali Dal Parkash Singh Badal too had been seeking the pruning of this list since 2010 and had even written letters to the Government of India asking for doing away with the list. Till 2011, there were 169 persons on the secret blacklist, with most of these people settled in UK, Germany and Canada. In the past five years, this is the third time that the blacklist has been screened and names deleted. The recent deletion of names from the Sikh blacklist is a result of an assurance given by PM Narendra Modi during his meeting with several separatist Sikh leaders in the UK in November 2015. When this meeting happened, the blacklist of Sikhs had only 43 names. Sources in the government say that though there was an initial move to completely do away with this list, objections were raised by the Intelligence Bureau.
Surrey RCMP now say 31 confirmed shots fired in 2016 Surrey RCMP say they have now confirmed 31 incidents of shots fired in the city – about double what has been released to the public. Police say not all shots-fired incidents are cause for alarm and say public releases only go out when it's believed residents are at risk, or when witnesses are needed. "Not all of them do we require witnesses," said Surrey RCMP Supt. Shawn Gill. "We don't also want to create fear when there is no need to." Out of the 31 shooting incidents, there have been three arrests. The number of shootings amounts to about one every three days since the start of the year, with a large portion of them occurring this month, mostly in Newton and Whalley. Police do not believe the shootings are related to the spate of gunfire incidents last year, but they do believe it is connected to a
dial-a-dope operation where people phone dealers for their drugs. "The majority of this year's incidents continue to involve those associated with the illegal drug trade," said Surrey RCMP Supt. Manny Mann. At least five of the shootings this year are connected to two groups fighting over drug turf. Mann said it's a "low-level" drug trade, not associated with any drug "organization."

As part of their crackdown on the drug trade, Surrey RCMP displayed one of their biggest drug busts in recent history. Before them at a Friday press conference was more than $4.5 million in drugs seized from a vehicle. As a result of that seizure, Pardip Hayer is facing four drug-related charges. "It was an ongoing investigation strategy on our part, that we pulled this individual over," said Gill, adding the drugs were from another country. The size of the seizure of drugs has police thinking it could have come from gang-level activity. "We would be remiss to not examine the potential for links to organized crime," said Gill. - Surrey North Delta Leader

Sudoku Solutions for last Issue
The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Cure for HIV and AIDS could be only a few years away
A cure for HIV and AIDS could be just a few years away after scientists proved they can snip away the virus from infected cells and prevent the disease returning. The HIV virus attacks and kills immune cells leaving patients highly vulnerable to other infections. Around 600 people with HIV die in Britain each year. But scientists in the U.S. have shown that it is possible to use genetic editing technology to cut away the virus from the DNA of cells. Although the experiments have so far only been in a lab, researchers atLewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, are confident that within three years they will be able to start trials on humans. British experts said the treatment would effectively “engineer the body to cure itself from the inside” and charities said the breakthrough was “very exciting”. The human immune cells which were tested in the lab showed no alteration to any other parts of the genetic code. There have been fears that altering DNA could trigger genetic breaks which would prove harmful or lethal to humans. BY SARAH KNAPTON, THE TELEGRAPH
Central Toronto beats out Vancouver when it comes to foreign ownership of new condos Fresh data on foreign ownership of condominiums in Toronto from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. points to an upswing in offshore money making its way into the country’s largest city. For the first time, the Crown corporation broke down offshore investment by the age of the buildings and it’s becoming increasingly clear that, as every new high-rise condominium goes up, so does the percentage of foreign owners. “You are seeing more flow of investment into newer buildings,” said Benjamin Tal, deputy chief economist with CIBC World Markets. “This study suggests that the flow of money has become significant and it is definitely not slowing down. I wouldn’t be surprised if 2016 is a record year when it comes to foreign investment in the condo market.” CMHC says that of all new buildings completed since 2010 in what it calls “Toronto Centre” about 10 per cent have been purchased by people from abroad, up from 2.3 per cent in the 1990s. In its April report, called Housing Market Insight, CMHC looked at the city of Toronto, its central core and the census metropolitan area (CMA). It also
looked at Vancouver’s CMA and 14 other Canadian markets. CMHC acknowledged the topic of foreign ownership has “gained in importance” and cited media for generating that level of interest. “The general perception is that foreign buyers are key players whose actions could have significant implications for Canadian housing markets,” the report states. The agency, which advises the government on housing policy, says there has been a range of statistics from various studies on foreign ownership but maintains “factual information” is scarce. It says the annual condominium vacancy survey, which CMHC has been conducting since 2014, fills in some of the gaps. It noted that as of 2015 in the
Vancouver CMA about six per cent of buildings built from 2010 were owned by foreigners, which compares with 7.4 per cent for Toronto’s CMA for buildings constructed in the same period. No smaller areas within the Vancouver CMA were broken out in the report because CMHC said it did not have reliable data. Tal said the concern is that foreign investors bring an element of vulnerability because they can leave the market for reasons beyond Canada’s control. “You are vulnerable to a foreign economy and policies conducted by the Communist Party in China,” he said, referring to Chinese buyers who are thought to be a large percentage of offshore buyers in the market.

Weight-loss surgery, a cure for diabetes NewDelhi: Could weight-loss surgery be a cure for type 2 diabetes? That's exactly what this report suggests. Dr. Atul Peters, director and head, metabolic and bariatric surgery at Fortis Hospital said, “Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes. It makes cells less able to use insulin to bring sugar in from the bloodstream. When you are already insulin resistant (diabetic or pre-diabetic), then it can be even harder to lose weight.” Peters noted that weight-loss surgery is dramatically more effective in the treatment of type 2 diabetes than a conventional treatment of diet changes and medication. Patients with conventional treatment of medication, along with rigorous monitoring of patient’s diet and lifestyle do not show progress, but patients, who went under the knife, saw dramatic improvement. 85 percent of patients, who underwent gastric bypass surgery, went into remission and got rid of diabetes. A 46-year-old home maker, Anshu Jain, from Delhi was diabetic and suffered with hypertension,
dyslipidaemia, sleep apnoea, snoring, stress incontinence, lower limb insufficiency and sarcoidosis. She weighed 127.5 kg (BMI 46) when she underwent metabolic and bariatric surgery in November 2012. In only 18 months, she lost 39.5 kg, her body weight dropped to 88 kg and BMI came down to 30.7. Her diabetes got resolved, HbA1c dropped from 7.8 to 5.3 along with resolution of all other comorbidities all this while. Harish Kumar Mangwani, a 62year-old morbid obese businessman from Delhi, was fighting everyday

with obesity and endless number of co-morbidities, like diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, snoring, asthma, joint pains and backache. He was on oral medicine as well as was taking insulin for diabetes and other medications for rest of the diseases. His weight was 127.3 kg, which had made his life miserable. But after undergoing the surgery, he was fine. According to Metabolic Surgery Foundation of India, the number of bariatric surgeries in India has seen an upward graph for cure of Diabetes, from about 3500 in 2011
to over 10,000 in 2013. At present, approximately 12000 bariatric surgical procedures are being performed every year in India. After surgery, post-operative care is an essential part of the treatment. To achieve optimum results from the surgery, patients should strictly follow the diet rules for at least a month. In first month, patient is advised to be on a full liquid diet for first 15 days, followed by light food diet for next 15 days and gradually he can get back to a normal diet. One should stop eating on full. Because after surgery it is critical that one does not eat to the point of feeling overfull. This could lead to stretching of pouch. One should do at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Peters continued, “National Institute of Health guidelines restricts patients with BMI greater than 40 kg/m² or greater than 35 kg/m² with co morbidities such as diabetes to undergo surgeries. Therefore, we recommend NIH to review the guidelines beyond BMI and set new standards for such surgeries.” (ANI)

Top '5' reasons why stealing a vehicle in Surrey doesn’t pay In honour of the beginning of Auto Crime Enforcement Month, the Surrey RCMP is releasing the Top ‘5’ reasons why stealing a vehicle in Surrey may not be advisable. 1. You might pick the wrong car or driver – Earlier this year, we told you about a car thief who attempted to steal a vehicle in the Newton area only to be arrested by the “victims”, who turned out to be two undercover police officers (see news release). 2. You might be spotted, even when we’re not on shift – We may be police officers, but when we’re not on shift, we watch TV, visit social media sites, and go for walks, just like you – and we just may see a criminal. This was the case last December, when one of our new officers spotted a recent wanted auto thief on TV and then on his coffee break (see news release). 3. It might be a bait car – As the saying goes from our friends at the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT): “Bait cars are everywhere”. Along with our other law enforcement partners, Surrey RCMP routinely uses bait cars in many situations and locations to catch auto thieves. 4. You’re being watched, even if you don’t know it – The public is our greatest ally. The eyes and ears of the community help us solve more crime and catch more criminals. With our Observe It. Report It. campaign and new Block Watches being created all the time, you never know who may be watching. 5. You might be immobilized – Thanks to advancements in technology, most vehicles since 2008 are equipped
with an immobilizer that makes it much more difficult to steal. Auto companies are coming up with other innovative
ways to deter thieves from stealing or entering you vehicle. Technology can be a vehicle owner’s best friend.
Deepak Sharma wins SFSS Presidency “Deepak, your life is going to be hell for the next year [. . .] but this is it, you’re elected, you’re the next President.” Those were the words from outgoing Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) President Enoch Weng, moments after Deepak Sharma was announced as the new President-elect of the SFSS. Both referendum questions passed and with over 19 percent voter turnout, the referendum overcame the five percent threshold to be passed. While all 11 Connected slate members went undefeated, not all were winners. The Science representative race saw a tie after polls, with both slate member Tomas Rapaport and Jimmy Dhesa garnering 280 votes.
Independent Electoral Commissioner (IEC) Vanna Lodders commended the candidates on the campaign they ran: “Everybody acted like adults — for the most part.” Sharma, current VP Student Life, spoke to The Peak about how he’s excited to use the next 365 days to put his plans into action. “We’ve all spoke a lot,” he said. “Now it’s time, come May 1, for our actions to speak louder than our words.” He spoke to the lessons he learned during his campaign: “As a team and as a leader, you’re only as strong as your weakest link.” by Max Hill, Jamal Dumas & Nathan Ross
While auto crime in Surrey is on the decline thanks to the points listed above as well as some significant arrests of prolific property crime thieves, Surrey RCMP officers are still seeing an apparent complacency on behalf of vehicle owners when it comes to safeguarding their vehicle keys. Since the beginning of the year, approximately twenty-five vehicles a month are being stolen in Surrey because owners are being careless with their keys. “Many of these vehicles are simply stolen because owners either left their vehicles running unattended or left their keys, valet key, or key fob somewhere in the vehicle,” says Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann. “With the warmer weather now upon us, many will be out enjoying the city’s amenities and as a result potentially leaving our vehicles in more open spaces. Whether you’re at the beach, public pool, park, or baseball diamond we remind you to always protect your property and don’t leave your keys for thieves.” For a list of the “Top 10 Auto Crime Offenders” (two of which are active in the Surrey area) and “Top 10 items stolen from vehicles” please visit www.baitcar.com. More safety tips can be found on the Auto Crime page on our website. Pratyusha Banerjee suicide: Rahul Raj Singh's lawyer calls him a liar
In his hour of need, looks like Rahul Raj Singh cannot depend on most people, including his lawyer. A day after he was booked for allegedly abetting his girlfriend Pratyusha Banerjee's suicide, Rahul's advocate Neeraj Gupta withdrew from the case, making a shocking claim - "Rahul is a liar and is not trustworthy. My conscience will not allow me to defend him," he told midday. "When I questioned him, he kept lying and did not give clear answers. Then I learnt the truth about certain things - that he used to hit Pratyusha and treat her badly. I thought of my daughter and realised I could not take his case," Gupta added. In his place, a new lawyer, Vikas Singh Goar, has been appointed by Rahul's family. The new lawyer filed for anticipatory bail yesterday, but Judge FM Khwaja will hear the matter today. The bail hearing is scheduled at Dindoshi session court for 11 am. By Santa Banta News Network

Shocking: Priyanka had tried committing suicide Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra attempted suicide three times during her struggling days including in 2002 after the death of her alleged former boyfriend Aseem Merchant's mother, her exmanager Prakash Jaju claimed today. In a series of tweets, Jaju said the 33-year-old "Quantico" star was extremely close to Merchant's mother and did not take her demise well. "PC was very close to Aseem merchant's mother, her death in 2002 shattered her so much that she tried to jump off karan apt to commit suicide," Jaju wrote. "I reached at nick of time and caught hold of her and tied her to a chair till grills were fixed in all the windows of the flat." The celebrity manager added he wanted to make a point "that suicidal tendency is in most of the girls of film
industry." "PC may look very strong now but
she was also very vulnerable in struggling days, tried to commit suicide 2-3 times but I managed to stop her," he wrote. Jaju said Priyanka and Aseem used to fight on daily basis and on one such night, the actress attempted suicide. "Daily PC and Aseem used to fight... She used to call me at 2 am in the night, crying... and I used to take her from Aseem's house, make her understand and drop her at her home. "Once madam went to Vasai to attempt suicide after fighting with Aseem. I got her back. Girls don't act intelligently at the age of 18-19." Priyanka, who is shooting in Los Angeles for her maiden Hollywood film "Baywatch", did not immediately respond to messages for her comments on Jaju's claims. Jaju also spoke about TV actress Pratyusha Banerjee, who was found dead at her home on April 1 in a suspected case of suicide. By Santa Banta News Network
Jacqueline's dad is proud of her A lot of people may not be aware of the fact that Jacqueline Fernandez' dad is a former DJ who used to play at night clubs. Though he has retired and now plays only at special events, there is one more interesting thing that people are unaware of. Recently, when the actress' dad was playing at a special event in Dubai, a bunch of girls kept coming up to him and requesting him to play Jacqueline's songs, Sooraj Dooba Hai, Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan, Jumme ki raat, Latt lag gayi etc. While they don't know that he is Jacqueline's father but a popular DJ, the actress' father feels very proud when these song requests come to him and he
smiles. Jacqueline has made her way into the industry with a lot of struggle and the fact that people in Dubai too are requesting for her songs is something that makes her father very happy. He called Jacqueline after the event and spoke to her at length telling her about how these requests keep coming. She was absolutely thrilled to hear this. Spokesperson of Jacqueline confirm the news and shares, "Jacqueline has a slew of hit songs to her credit and these are songs that are very popular at dance parties. Her father felt very proud when he got requests to play her songs." By Santa Banta News Network

(Mar.2121- April April 19) energetic, and be on the best of terms with co-workers and officemates, too. You could be busy beyond belief around the Full Moon on April 21, so take good care of yourself on the inside. Protect your private time, get enough peace and quiet, then go out and rule the world. The Moon/Mars conjunction on April 25 gets your work week off to a quick start.
The New Moon on April 7 brings an endless stream of crazy, brilliant ideas. Keep things to yourself, though. If one special project seems wise and possible, try it without talking about it first. You'll see right away who appreciates you. Romance shines (Apr. 20- may 20) brightly during the Full Moon on April 21. Cling to those idealistic visions of love and let a special someone be there for you. A gift for you or your home could appear.

Review The opening shot of movie may not be the best things you have seen so far this Summer, but thankfully, the movie kicks off tremendously after that. Without much ado, we travel to the infamous Jurassic Park that has been functioning for over 10 years now. The declining visitor rates along with the need of new attractions put the financial heads behind the mark in a tussle which leads to the creation of the antagonist, the highly intelligent hybrid. The trailers of this movie were convincing. With a cast comprising of Chris Pratt, who almost ruled the screen last year with Guardians of the Galaxy, we see Irrfan Khan, playing Masrani, the owner of this family themed park. Bryce Dallas Howard, who is fondly remembered for playing Gwen Stacy in Spiderman-3 plays an integral role. Packed with a strong supporting cast, the movie delivers on almost all fronts. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, who also has a cameo, the movie revolves around a plot where an experiment goes rogue. Thankfully, for the audience, the movie is just not about a rogue dinosaur alone but about the park. We see Chris Pratt as Owen, and his bond with the animals. Even though all of it is understandably CGI, the scenes never pass off as mere graphic illusion, but seem real, and this is where Jurassic World triumphs.
'Jurassic World'
The story is kept simple, without adding too many subplots. The only ones there are mix easily with the pace of the movie. The park is big, better, and brilliant. Housing over 20,000 guests, the park now contains added
attractions in the form of large underwater dinosaur, which we don't get to see much, Darn! There is also a bird house which goes rogue later in the movie, playing nicely into the climax. Fans of the Jurassic Park trilogy
13
are sure to be amazed with plenty of tributes and Easter Eggs thrown in to commemorate the previous franchise. However, if you are the kid from this century, there is still enough for you to enjoy in this movie. Unlike most dinosaur movies these days, *cough cough Godzilla*, Jurassic World is firmly supported by intelligent screenplay and direction. Chris Pratt as Owen is pretty...'badass'. Intense for most of the movie, he plays his part well. Bryce Dallas Howard gets maximum screen time and makes the most of it. Indian audiences are in for a pleasant surprise as Irrfan Khan too has a meaty role in this one. Not just meaty but even meaningful, unlike what Bollywood actors are usually treated to. Seems like Irrfan has indeed carved a permanent place for himself in Hollywood. The Humor in this movie is pretty classy. Dialogue writing is crisp and not overdone. The 3D effects play out well, and are really not scary, Phew! Running for a little over 2 hours, this movie does far many more right things than wrong. If you are looking for special effects and an effective script, go in for this one. You won't be disappointed.

'Kapoor & Sons' - Joy and woe are woven fine
"Kapoor & Sons" is a saga of a dysfunctional family, which makes you laugh and cry with its members, as you become an intrinsic part of their lives. It is a complete family entertainer with a universal appeal. Arjun (Siddharth Malhotra) and Rahul (Fawad Khan) are two siblings based in New Jersey and London respectively and arrive at Coonoor to visit their ailing grandfather (Rishi Kapoor) who lives with their parents Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) and Sunita (Ratna Pathak Shah). Their complicated relationships, replete with misunderstandings, accusations, lies and yet, bound by love, form the crux of this film. Clearly, the film is on a dysfunctional family, and some realistic elements interwoven in its narrative add to its effectiveness in being relatable to the audience. Writer-director Shakun Batra can take a bow for his astute handling of a simple story, with a complicated plot owing to the complex lives of the

perfection, their lives almost unfolding before our eyes in the two hours. The screenplay is taut and full of unexpected twists which keep you riveted to the screen, never letting your interest wane. Performance-wise, "Kapoor & Sons" is impressive too. Siddharth Malhotra as the "runner up" or "second best" of the two brothers, portrays his angst and resentment, in an understated manner. He is every inch the son who tries hard to prove his worth to his parents to make them proud. Playing his love interest, is Alia Bhatt as Tia Malik, a Mumbai-based girl who is an orphan and misses having a family. As always, she renders a zesty performance with oodles of spontaneity
and panache and is equally the heart stealer in emotional scenes. She lights up the screen with her joie de vivre. Fawad Khan as the successful novelist and older sibling essays Rahul with restraint and yet, has his moments when he lets his guard down, if only to express his anger, disappointment and hurt. Ratna Pathak Shah plays the complex mother and wife with aplomb. Whether it is unintentionally hurting her son or accusing her husband of an affair, her display of emotions, though, a bit theatrical and dramatic, is a treat to watch. Rajat Kapoor plays the underdog to perfection, constantly under scrutiny by his wife, being taunted for his failed business attempts and relationship with his former bank colleague Anu. Rishi Kapoor, of course as the doyen of the family, is an absolute delight in his genial avatar, complete with a new get up. His childlike innocence, playful nature and being one with his young grandsons whether smoking or watching a drenched Mandakini in a film, are a few of the myriad moments, which audiences will relish. The contrast in his performance stands out in the scene after an unexpected tragedy in his family. As far as the music is concerned, Amaal Mallik's work is melodious, appropriate, but incidental, never for a moment seeming forced. "Kar gayi chull" is fun and peppy and equally apt is the soulful "Saathi re", which sums up the mood of the situation.

Tips and tricks for coping with a colicky baby (NC) Any new parent will tell you that there is almost nothing more unnerving than a baby that won't stop crying. Those glass-shattering howls that keep parents up at night can make it seem like your baby is inconsolable and can be a difficult challenge for exhausted new parents to face. Colic is one of the great mysteries of baby life, and no one knows why some babies have it and others don't. To help you determine if your child has colic, here are some common signs: • Loud crying, often for two to three hours and the baby can't be comforted. • Crying at roughly the same times, either late in the afternoon or night, and usually once or twice a day.• The baby pulling his feet up under his body and clenching his fists.• The baby's stomach rumbling severely and producing a lot of gas.
Here are some tips and tricks to consider:
Spring cleaning for your kitchen (NC) Spring is a great time for a fresh start, but spring cleaning is something that most people dread. That dusty refrigerator top, cluttered cabinets and an oven that smokes when you use it have been ignored long enough. It may seem like an ominous task but here are some tips to make spring cleaning a breeze: One task at a time Tackling the bigger, dirtier jobs first will make the rest of the work seem not so daunting. Start by emptying out the fridge, cupboards and drawers and giving them a good wipe down. Don't forget to pull out the fridge and stove to clean behind and under them. You should also empty the toaster crumb tray and wipe down the microwave. Organization Take this opportunity to sort and discard older, expired items. Throw out multiple opened condiment jars and nearly-empty containers and start a donation bin for the non-perishable food items. Rearrange your cupboards making the most used items more accessible. Rejuvenate Over time, your bright and shiny stainless steel cookware can become stained and discoloured. They can easily
be brought back to life using specialty non-abrasive cleaners, or even cooking high-acid foods like tomato sauce or washing the pan with vinegar. You can also use spring cleaning as an occasion to polish the silverware and sharpen those kitchen knives. Short-cuts to save on time Oven cleaning used to be one of the toughest tasks. Taking advantage of selfcleaning features on ovens can significantly reduce cleaning time and the use of harsh cleaning chemicals. New LG ovens can sparkle in just three easy steps by simply spraying with water, pressing LG's EasyClean and after just 10 minutes wiping away any leftover grime. The Aqua Clean Enamel (ACE) coating means that water can penetrate between the surface and the residue, making baked-on food much easier to separate from your oven walls
Swaddle your baby This technique of wrapping your infant in a cozy blanket can help them feel safe and secure. Try swaddling them during feedings or wrapping them up before a usual colicky period so they feel comforted. Buy a remedy One solution for sleep-deprived parents is Cocyntal, a homeopathic medicine from Boiron used to relieve abdominal pain, cramps, spasms and intestinal gas in babies one to six months of age. The water-based formula contains
no sugar, dyes or preservatives so it is gentle on the baby's developing digestive system. Stay prepared on the go Single, drinkable unit doses and easy-to-carry pouches of treatments like Cocyntal are simple to administer and mean you will not be fumbling when you're out for a walk looking for spoons or measuring cups. Go for a drive The movement, noise and vibration of a car can be very soothing for a baby. Buckle them into their car seat and go for a drive for a change of scenery. New signs, sights, sounds and smells can be a distraction and even help them fall asleep. Sounds and music from the radio can help calm your baby and you as well. Ease a gassy stomach While gas doesn't cause colic, it's something that many colicky babies suffer from. Gently massage your baby's tummy in a circle to ease the pain and pressure. Also remember to burp your baby often. Keep in mind, this homeopathic medicine may not be right for everyone, always read and follow the label. More information and tips on how to relieve colic symptoms is available at the “Homeopathic Medicine Finder App at www.boiron.ca/app.

How to protect seniors against fraud and financial abuse (NC) March is Fraud Prevention Month in Canada, and the federal government is reminding Canadians to be on guard against offers that seem too good to be true. Seniors, in particular, are often targeted by fraudsters. According to the Government of Canada, financial abuse of seniors is the most common form of elder abuse in Canada. Those who are isolated are even more at risk. While powers of attorney and joint bank accounts can help seniors and those who care for them manage and protect their finances, these tools can be abused by people whom seniors have put in positions of trust. In addition, thieves regularly target seniors with telephone and email scams and fraudulent telemarketing. One of the easiest ways for all of us to find signs of identity theft and fraud is to order a credit report every year from both of Canada's credit reporting agencies, Equifax and TransUnion. A credit report will show you when someone has opened credit cards and other loans in your name, leaving you responsible to pay them back, with interest. Seniors can also use direct deposit for pensions and other regular payments, and preauthorized payments for regular bills to reduce the number of banking transactions they need to ask someone else to carry out for them. Here are some additional tips that all Canadians should follow to prevent fraud and financial abuse: • Keep your passwords and
personal identification number (PIN) to yourself—avoid writing them down. • If you must write this personal information down, keep it in a secure place, such as a safe or a hiding place.
Also try not carry your PINs together with your cards while you are in public. If you must carry your PIN with you, keep it in a pocket or other place separate apart from your cards. That
way, if your card is stolen, your PIN won't be with it. • Be wary of calls or emails asking for personal information. Feel free to hang up on such callers. • If a caller says they are from your bank, or another financial institution, say you will call back using the number you have on file to verify what the caller is saying. • Only provide personal information when it is you who has initiated the call to a reputable business. • For major decisions, get your own legal advice before signing any documents. • If you think someone may have defrauded you, contact the police, your bank, or your lawyer. The Keep-Your-Identity-Yours Q and A (NC) March is Fraud Prevention Month in Canada – a time when Canadians should focus their attention on protecting their personal information. Why? Your personal identification numbers and online passwords give you direct access to your financial accounts. If that information falls into the wrong hands, you could quickly become a victim of theft or fraud. Take this quiz to determine if you know how to protect yourself. Q: The only way I've been able to keep track of my passwords is to use the same one. Is that safe?
A: No. The best line of defence against identity thieves, who want to steal your personal information to access your money, is to create unique passwords using a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that you change often. Q: Name five things you can do to protect yourself from identity thieves. A: Install and use up-to date antivirus software on your computer, review your bank statements for any unusual activity, change your PIN often, request and review your credit report and shred your personal mail.
Q: What do I do if I'm victimized by identity theft? A: Write down when you noticed the fraud and the actions you took, file a report with your local police, contact the affected financial institutions and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and advise Canada's two credit-rating agencies, Equifax Canada or TransUnion Canada.

TFSA: Watch your limit–stay within it
(NC) So what's all this talk about over-contributing to a tax-free savings account (TFSA)? It's important to find out everything you need to know about TFSA overcontributions to avoid problems later on. What is the annual TFSA dollar limit? The limit for 2016 is $5,500. How do you figure out your TFSA contriution room? Your annual TFSA contribution room is made up of three things: 1. the annual TFSA dollar limit; 2. any unused contribution room from previous years; and 3. any withdrawals you made during previous years (any direct transfer is not included). What happens if you overcontribute to your TFSA? The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) charges a tax of 1% for every month that the excess contributions stay in your account. The first time this happens, you will receive a notification in the mail identifying your excess contribution situation. An indirect transfer from one TFSA to another is also considered a contribution. How can you check your contribution room? You can keep track using the CRA's My Account self-service portal. Simply log into My Account and you'll be able to: 1. check your TFSA contribution room; 2. make sure your TFSA is registered with the CRA; and 3. review any transactions within your TFSA. It's your responsibility to manage your TFSA contributions and withdrawals, but your financial institution can help you too.
