Local basketball tournament celebrates 25th anniversary Surrey It started out as a simple idea to foster positive relationships between police and students in Surrey. Twenty-five years later, the Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic is one of the largest basketball tournaments in British Columbia and involves almost every public and private high school in Surrey. The tournament has also helped over 150 students secure scholarships for continued success in their future academic studies and athletic endeavours. This weekend, the "Classic" will wrap up its 25th annual tournament. From January 10th to 16th, over seventy games will have been played, involving some of the best players in the province.

In the beginning, it was simply a way for officers from the Surrey RCMP’s new School Liaison Program [now called Youth Section] to become more engaged with local high school students, says Surrey School District’s Rick Inrig, one of the founders of the tournament. Both the Surrey School District and the RCMP recognized the importance that such an event could have on building relationships between youth in the city and our local police. We had no idea that it would grow to this size and be such a conduit for youth development and healthy competition. Government mulls waiving Loonie set for unprecedented plunge to taxes and duties on smaller- 59 cents U.S., top forecaster warns value online purchases The Liberal government is considering changes to Canada’s strict import rules to exempt more goods purchased online from duties and sales taxes. Under the current system, duty and taxes apply to shipped products valued at $20 or more, the “de minimis” threshold that hasn’t been updated since 1985. The government is under pressure to raise the threshold, with online retailers eBay and parcel shipper UPS actively lobbying to make it cheaper for consumers to buy products from vendors abroad. Import duties do not apply to all online purchases; electronics, for example, are already exempt. But they do attach to popular online purchases such as clothing, shoes and sporting goods, among other items. For example, a $100 pair of women’s pants bought from Europe and shipped to Ontario would cost an extra $33.34 in duty and HST. A Chinese-made bicycle valued at $400 and imported to Quebec would cost an additional $117.54 in duty and tax. Even goods that have already had duty paid by importers – clothing made in Asia and sold online by J. Crew, for instance – wouldn’t carry duty but would still benefit from a higher threshold to avoid GST, HST or provincial sales tax when shipped to Canada Other countries have far higher de minimis thresholds, including the United States ($200 US), New Zealand (400 NZD) and Australia (1,000 AUD). EBay has already secured a meeting

with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains to press its case on de minimis and is hopeful that a change to the regime will be included in the upcoming federal budget. Making online purchases cheaper would likely be popular with consumers, particularly as the Canadian dollar flags against the U.S. currency. But to Canadian retailers, a higher

de minimis would put domestic retailers at a disadvantage, as online shoppers wouldn’t pay the same GST and provincial sales taxes on purchases as people would if they buy from bricksand-mortar stores. And governments, both federal and provincial, could give up potential enormous amounts of sales taxes on smaller purchases. EBay tried and failed to get the Conservative government to include a revised threshold in the 2014 federal budget. The top forecaster of the Canadian dollar said the currency will fall to a record 59 U.S. cents by the end of the year as further weakness in the energy sector saps growth in an economy already stretched by a heavily indebted consumer and the Bank of Canada cuts interest rates for a third time. The call from Macquarie Group Ltd.’s David Doyle, the top-ranked forecaster for the U.S. versus Canadian dollar exchange rate last year according to Bloomberg rankings, comes as the currency fell below 70 U.S. cents Tuesday for the first time in almost 13 years. The currency’s tumble to levels last seen in the late 1990s came as crude continued to reach multiyear lows. “You could imagine the situation is worse today than in the 1990s,” Doyle said.. “We’re much more dependent on oil now than we were in the past.” Macquarie was among the first major forecasters to predict the currency would hit these levels. A 59 U.S. cent Canadian dollar would mean one U.S. dollar buys C$1.6949. The currency fell as much as 0.6 per cent to 69.90 U.S. cents Tuesday in Toronto,, the first time it touched that level since May 2003, as crude oil fell to a 12-year low of US$29.93 per barrel in New York. The first time the Canadian dollar weakened below 70 U.S. cents was 1997, before the country’s oil industry took off and when its government was wrestling with a budget deficit. It mostly traded below 70 U.S. cents between 1997 and 2003, a period when manufacturing made up a larger part of exports than oil. Its all-time low was 61.76 U.S. cents in 2002. Meet South Carolina Governor Nikki , who might just be the Republicans’ Obama A politician with a diverse background who doesn’t exactly fit in among colleagues gives a high-profile speech that seems to open a road someday to the White House. U.S. President Barack Obama at the 2004 Democratic National Convention — or South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley giving the Republican response to Obama’s final State of the Union Tuesday night? Haley’s response, well-received in some quarters, brought a five-yearold New York magazine question to mind: “Could Nikki Haley be the GOP’s Obama?” Its answer: “Yes she can.” “Haley has suddenly gone from being a three-term state legislator to a nationally prominent politician,” Jennifer Senior wrote back in 2010. “She speaks well and looks terrific on TV. She’s young and has two young, telegenic children, and she stands out in a party of dreary white men. Sound like anyone else you

know?” Nor have parallels in Obama and Haley’s personal lives been missed. Shaw to sell Global TV network, specialty channels to Corus for $2.65 billion

CALGARY Shaw Communications is selling its media division to Corus Entertainment for $2.65 billion — a deal that will help fund the telecom company's purchase of Wind Mobile. Shaw Media includes the Global Television network and 19 specialty channels including HGTV Canada, Food Network Canada and Showcase — formerly part of the Canwest business group before it was split up. Corus already owns a number of other specialty TV channels as well as a network of radio stations and the Nelvana animation studio. Both companies are controlled by the Shaw family through its voting shares. Shaw Communications will become a large shareholder in Corus as a result of the deal, which involves both cash and shares.

"Through this transaction we are able to crystalize an attractive value for Shaw Media and realize substantial value creation for Shaw shareholders since acquiring CanWest in 2010," said Shaw director Paul Pew, chair of a special board committee. Shaw Communications chief executive Brad Shaw added that "we are grateful to our colleagues at Shaw Media for their contributions to Shaw's success over the past five years . . ." The songs are efficiently used to propel the narration, forward, especially, "Tere bin", and "Ya maula". And the background score punctuates the narration, aptly, making the entire viewing experience exalting. Cinematographer Sanu John Varghese captures the visuals perfectly, whether it is the action sequences or emotional turmoil. The frames are pure visual delight. What adds to the aesthetics of the frames, is the lighting, which is deliberate. It succeeds in creating the fitting effect, albeit dramatic. Dementia doesn't need to define a life (NC) Currently 47.5 million people worldwide are living with dementia. This number is more than the total population of Canada. By 2031 it is estimated that 1.4 million Canadians will be living with this disease. Although a diagnosis of dementia can come as a shock not only for the person, but for the family as well, there are resources to support living a happy and healthy day-to-day life. Boz Carter is a doting grandfather, a greeter at his church and a huge Boston Bruins fan. He is also someone living with Alzheimer's disease. "Dementia doesn't define us," says his wife Cathy Hurd Carter, 53. "That's been our mantra from the beginning." The Winnipeg couple adopted the mantra shortly after Carter's 2012 diagnosis. Almost immediately, they enrolled themselves in an eight-week

Hurd Carter says it helped them understand they didn't have to look backward to hang on to what they have. "We can move forward with this disease and still live life," she comments. That was especially important to Carter, 60, who was fired from his job as a stock clerk when he became ill. The experience left him feeling "broken and useless," says Hurd Carter.
