Liberals give up majority on committee that will study changes to Canada's voting system OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Trudeau government is giving in to opposition pressure and sacrificing its majority on a committee that will look into changing the way you vote. For months, opposition parties had been criticizing the government, accusing it of stacking the deck to get a new voting system that would benefit the Liberals. Initially, the government said it was taking the same approach as all committees and making its membership reflective of the make up of the House of Commons. But today, Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef made the concession and announced they would support the NDP motion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The government will not have a majority on the committee. Hopefully, this will assure members that the government comes to this process with an open mind.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been persuaded that an additional way to demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity is to break with tradition and to have both the Bloc (Quebecois) and the Green (party) as full voting members,â&#x20AC;? Monsef told the House of Commons. Monsef acknowledged that the

changes would replace a government majority with a majority of opposition members, but she said to focus on that would be to miss the point. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The issue is that every member, regardless of party, must combine their partisan perspective with meeting the important need that Canadians have to

improve the electoral process.â&#x20AC;? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s believed the Liberals favour a ranked ballot system, but proportional representation and mandatory voting are also on the table. The prime minister has promised the last election was the last one using the first past-the-post system. The current make-up of the committee would have seen six Liberals, three Conservatives and one New Democrat, with a Bloc MP and the Green Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Elizabeth May on the committee but without a vote. The NDP proposal changes that to five Liberals, three Conservatives, two New Democrats, one Bloc MP, May and a vote for everyone. The motion, which would be binding if passed, would also mean the committee would begin meeting within 10 days.

Hotel placements continue for B.C. children in care

By Jeff Nagel - BC Local News A new report shows 24 children and youth in government care were placed in hotels in the three and a half months up until the end of April. The Ministry of Children and Family Development has been under pressure to minimize the practice but says hotels sometimes must be used when there's no other suitable option.

Most of the children placed in hotels this year stayed only a day or two. In each case, a qualified contracted caregiver, ministry social worker or foster parent was staying with the child, and each placement was approved locally and reported to the provincial director of child welfare. One pair of siblings were in a hotel for 18 nights because the relatives they were placed with were staying in the

hotel while waiting to take possession of the new home they'd bought. Other reasons for hotel placements included a fire at a foster home, emergency removal from a remote home where no other local foster home was available, and a bad weather delay of foster parents' flight to pick up their foster kids. In a few other cases threats to safety were cited for urgent use of hotels. Seven children were placed in hotels in northwestern B.C. during the period, as well as another seven in the Vancouver-Richmond area and four in the South Fraser area. Hotel placements have been high profile and have drawn heavy fire from the Representative for Children and Youth. The focus intensified after 18-yearold Alex Gervais fell or jumped to his death last fall from the fourth floor of an Abbotsford hotel, where he'd been housed after his group home was shut down due to poor conditions. The release of statistics every six months is part of the ministry's commitment to better transparency on the issue.

Red Deer mom charged with using her son to make child pornography Authorities in Red Deer, Alta., have seized a four-year-old boy from his mother, accusing her of sexually abusing the boy and producing child pornography that involved him. The 43-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday at a licensed daycare in the central Alberta city where she worked, but police said there is no indication any children from the daycare were abused. "This is a heinous crime that was committed on a young child by the one person they should be able to trust the most," said Insp. Dave Dubnyk, who oversees the Internet Child Exploitation

Unit of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams. Dubnyk said the investigation began when the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children Unit identified a child who was being sexually abused after photos of the abuse were sent over email. Police determined the child lived in the Red Deer area and were able to identify his mother as the suspect. To protect the identity of the boy, police are not naming her. The child is now safe and being offered support, according to police, who have notified parents with

children at the day care. The boy's mother, a Red Deer resident, has been charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation, making child pornography, distributing child pornography, possessing child pornography and accessing child pornography. The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams are made up of members of Alberta Sheriffs, the Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, Lethbridge Police Service, Medicine Hat Police Service and the RCMP. -By Robson Fletcher, CBC News

Alberta's carbon tax steers clear of making airlines pay

By Kyle Bakx, CBC News In seven months, many Albertans will start paying the carbon tax. Buy gas for your car, fill up your propane tank, or turn on the natural gas furnace and it'll cost a little more. Carbon pricing systems are supposed to include just about every person and every business to create buyin throughout the province and make sure everyone has an incentive to reduce emissions.Airlines burn fossil fuels just like most of us do with cars, trucks and boats. However, they have soared right over the carbon tax, largely avoiding the full force of the new program. Only flights that depart and arrive in Alberta (such as Calgary to Edmonton) will be included. "I would exempt no one. For political buy-in reasons, you want everyone in this together," said Ragan. He'd rather have an economy-wide carbon price, but provide cash rebates to those groups of people and businesses that are unfairly affected, such as lowincome households and industries that have competition in jurisdictions without a carbon price. That way, he suggests, there is incentive for all parties to reduce their emissions, whether it's an airline or a taxi company. "You reduce emissions, but you keep the businesses in the province." Airline protest Airlines around the world have fought carbon pricing, even taking legal action in the EU. They are mobile operations and can move their business where they want. In Canada, the competitiveness issue is valid. An airline flying from Calgary to Vancouver could be at a disadvantage from other airlines that are buying their fuel elsewhere. Airline costs keep climbing Giving the airline industry a pass with the carbon tax is a smart move, says aviation analyst Robert Kokonis, since airlines already face too many taxes, which increases costs for passengers. "It's the sum of all the fees and charges. It becomes a significant amount of additional money for consumers," said Kokonis, the founder of AirTrav Inc. "The danger is now Alberta has put on a carbon tax, as has B.C. Maybe Quebec or Ontario will be next to follow suit. Ontario has already increased massively the size of our provincial tax on airline kerosene from where it was for years at about 2.7 cents to about five or six cents per litre." If a carbon tax was applied to all flights departing the province, he estimates flying from Calgary to Tokyo in 2018 would cost an extra $30.

Pedophile dubbed 'Swirl Face' sentenced to 5.5 years by B.C. judge •By Canadian Press - BC Local News NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. -A British Columbia pedophile convicted of producing online child pornography in Cambodia where he disguised his face with a swirl has been sentenced to five-and-a-half-years in prison. But because of his time already served, a B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled Christopher Neil's remaining sentence is just over 14 months, six months more time than the Crown had requested. The 41-year-old man pleaded guilty in December to five child-sex crimes that took place in Cambodia, as well as Vancouver and Maple Ridge, B.C., spanning a 10-year period.

Judge John Harvey says the sentence reflects the gravity of the crimes and high moral culpability of Neil, noting that he not only victimized two young boys by manufacturing child pornography but harmed them again by posting videos online. Neil has been held in custody since the RCMP Child Exploitation Unit arrested him two years ago following a sweeping investigation in B.C. and Cambodia. At his April sentencing hearing, the man who was dubbed "Swirl Face" b y international m e d i a

apologized to his victims and said he intends to change his behaviour. Neil has also served nearly five years in a Thailand prison for the unrelated sexual abuse of two boys, but was released early and returned to Canada in the fall of 2012.

At 6:00 AM Saturday morning I am having a cup of coffee and reading PARENT magazine. I have just finished reading an article regarding you and prenatal testing.

Hmm.. I wonder if she’s awake now. It’s so nice to know and not have to wonder if it’s a girl or boy I am talking about. This is my fourth baby and I did want a son. Each time I went through the pregnancy not knowing how to refer to “it” I got tired of calling them “the baby”. Also, towards the end of my last pregnancy my doctor told me he thought it was a boy by sound of the heartbeat. So naturally I went out and bought a blue blanket. (Not that girls don’t like trucks, planes and blue!)

Alleged Surrey terrorist writes to Trudeau claiming political persecution by India A Surrey man whom the Indian government alleges is a terrorist has written to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claiming he is being persecuted because of his support for a separate Sikh nation. Hardeep Nijjar, 38, confirmed to The Vancouver Sun Wednesday that he sent his letter to Trudeau after meeting with supporters in Metro Vancouver. The letter says Nijjar has “never believed in, supported or been involved in any violent activity.” “Because of my campaign for Sikh rights, it’s my belief that I have become a target of an Indian government campaign to label my human rights campaign as terrorist activities,” his letter said. Over the weekend, The Times of India quoted a Punjab police intelligence report claiming Nijjar is wanted in a 2007 cinema bombing, is now the leader of a group called the Khalistan Terror Force and is running training camps for militants near Mission, B.C. The report said India would be requesting Nijjar’s extradition. The Canadian government has not responded to the allegations in the report. Nijjar told The Sun Monday it was all “garbage.” He also told The Sun he was too busy with his plumbing business to be involved in politics. However, in his letter to Trudeau,

He said his father and brother were detained last year while visiting India and given a warning for him to curb his “anti-India campaign.” Interpol has issued a warrant for Nijjar’s arrest based on information received from the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation. Nijjar says in his letter that India “has blatantly abused its governmental authority” to place his name on the Interpol list without any justification. And he wants Trudeau to intervene. “I urge your administration to dispel the Indian government’s fabricated, baseless, fictitious and politically-motivated allegations against me,” Nijjar said. He’s being assisted by New York lawyer Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who flew to B.C. to meet the father of two. Pannun told The Sun Wednesday that he intends to file a complaint with Interpol about the warrant being issued with no underlying evidence. “We will seek information from them, what are the underlying charges … and how they got investigated and what Interpol did on their part to verify it. It’s their responsibility to look into it,” Pannun said. He said a similar Interpol warrant against a Sikh separatist in Portugal was recently withdrawn after a challenge. Teen stabbed outside east Toronto high school, police look for suspect TORONTO — Police say a teen has been stabbed at an east Toronto high school. Const. David Hopkinson says officers were called to the Scarborough Centre for Alternative Studies shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday. Hopkinson says a male between 18 and 19 was found suffering stab wounds and rushed to hospital with lifethreatening injuries. The Toronto District School Board tweeted that the stabbing took place on school property outside the building. Hopkinson says police are still looking for the alleged stabber, described as a black male between 18 and 20, wearing a red hoodie and dark pants. He says the school was briefly placed in lockdown which has since been lifted, though the school remains in hold and secure during what Hopkinson described as a public safety risk. Toronto woman Pawandeep Kaur accused of arranging hit on husband Jaskaran Singh in India Toronto - A Toronto woman is sought in India after police there allege she paid four men -- including her two lovers -- to kill her estranged husband. Police say Pawandeep Kaur is wanted in the slaying of her husband Jaskaran Singh, who was fatally stabbed in March in the village of Sawara, in Kharar, in the Punjab region of India. Gursharan Singh Grewal, the superintendent of investigations for SAS Nagar police, says one of the other suspects pointed the finger at Kaur during his interrogation. He says the couple had a "strained relation" partly because Singh had spent the last few years in India rather than with his wife in Canada. Grewal says Kaur was romantically involved with two of the suspects and police believe she wanted to seize control of her husband's property. He says they have made a request for her extradition. A spokesman for Canada's Department of Justice said officials could neither confirm nor deny

CBS Sacramento reports that it began with a love of dinosaurs, and not long after, Tanishq Abraham was asking his parents to allow him to take a college course. He was just 6 years old. "It's like, you're 6 years old and you want to take a college class?" his mother said. "So we just laughed it off." But at 7 years old, he came back and convinced his parents to ask American River College about attending a class. "Lots of professors, they didn't really want me in their classes because I was too young," Tanishq said. Finally, a professor agreed, but

Neighbour's DNA matched-blood found in Gill home CBC News TORONTO-DNA obtained from a bloody knife and blood found spattered throughout the Ottawa home of Jagtar Gill after she was stabbed and bludgeoned to death matched that of her neighbour Gurpreet Ronald, an Ottawa court heard Wednesday. Ronald and Gill's husband, Bhupinderpal Gill, are each charged with first-degree murder in Gill's 2014 death. The Crown alleges the co-accused, co-workers at OC Transpo, were in a longstanding affair and had conspired to kill Jagtar Gill. The two accused have both pleaded not guilty and are being tried together, but are being defended by different

lawyers. On Wednesday Ottawa police Const. Julie Dobler, a forensic identification expert, continued to take court through the evidence she and her team found in the Barrhaven home where Jagtar Gill's lifeless body was discovered on Jan. 29, 2014. Dobler said on Feb. 6, 2014, police turned over a number of blood-covered exhibits seized from the family room and from other parts of the Gill home to the Centre for Forensic Science in Toronto to obtain a DNA match. Samples taken from victim, coaccused Police surreptitiously obtained Gurpreet Ronald's DNA from a white envelope, Dobler testified. Investigators

obtained a DNA sample from Bhupinderpal Gill from a used tissue, also without his knowledge.

Gursimar Bedi was found guilty by a B.C. Supreme Court judge on Friday of being an accessory after the fact in the murder of Surrey teen Maple Batalia. Justice Terence Schultes found Bedi rented a vehicle which was driven by the 19-year-old's killer, and also spied on the aspiring actress and model. Crown prosecutors also charged Bedi with manslaughter but admitted in closing arguments that they could not

prove those allegations. He is expected to be back in court on June 9 to fix a date for sentencing. Bedi's friend Gurjinder 'Gary' Dhaliwal pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced, March 7, to life in prison. He will not be eligible for parole for 21 years. Dhaliwal gunned down Batalia in September 2011 in the parkade of Surrey's SFU campus.

According to Crown prosecutor Wendy Stephens, Dhaliwal killed her because she wanted to break up with him because of repeated infidelity. Stephens said Dhaliwal engaged in "obsessive, controlling behaviour" in the weeks before the killing. He sent her thousands of messages, threatened male friends and ultimately lay in wait to confront and kill her.

Blood found on a finger torn from the blue latex glove found next to Gill's body also matched Ronald's, Dobler testified. A box of similar-looking blue gloves was seized from a kitchen cupboard in the Gills' kitchen. Dobler said the analysis determined the chances of someone else sharing the same DNA profile as Ronald's was one in one quadrillion (or one followed by 15 zeroes). When police questioned Gurpreet Ronald several days after the killing about the bandage on her finger she said she'd cut it chopping vegetables.

For the second offence, you’ll be on the hook for more than $800. Get caught a third time? The fine can be $1,600 dollars. And major repeat offenders, like the Richmond driver nailed for 14 distracted driving offences, could be slapped with fines of nearly $15,000. Over the past three years, approximately 50,000 distracted driving tickets have been issued annually. While they found acceleration in similar levels of educational attainment between spouses over time, this trend was not reflected in genes long known to be linked with educational attainment, in other words, the similarity between spouses with respect to education-associated genes

Smart Call: Bollywood bigwigs not so keen on box office clash With one of the biggest clashes of the year between 'Sultan' and 'Raees' averted, it seems more Bollywood films are trying to avoid the situations of more than one movie releasing on the same day. Ever since news broke that 'Raees' and 'Sultan' will release during Eid this year, all eyes were set on the 'clash of the titans', as neither of the parties seemed to back off and were consistent in their stand to have a clash. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan's 'Raees', however, was pushed to January 26, 2017, avoiding a release with the Salman Khan-starrer. The makers of 'Raees' cited 'appropriate showcasing' of a film of 'such magnitude' for the push, but the move comes right after SRK's last release 'Dilwale' underperformed at the box office as it clashed with 'Bajirao Mastani' last year. The 'Raees'-'Sultan' clash is not the only movie-event which was averted. Sunny Deol's 'Ghayal Once Again' was initially scheduled to release with Salman's 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' last year. The action-drama was, however, pushed to January 15, 2016. In a surprising turn of events, the film's release was yet again pushed to February 5. While January 15, 2016 had only one film 'Chalk N Duster' playing, release of 'Ghayal Once Again' on the same day would have meant coming one week after Amitabh Bachchanstarrer 'Wazir' and a week before Akshay Kumar's 'Airlift'. The weekend of May 27 was chocka-block with Naseeruddin Shah's 'Waiting', Ram Gopal Varma's 'Veerappan' and Radhika Apte-starrer

If the Independence Day weekend is packed with these, even Diwali seems to be heading for a major clash. Karan Johar's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' and Ajay Devgn's 'Shivaay' are expected to release on October 28 this year, with no news of either director backing off. The current year seems interesting as some biggies are avoiding to take their films head-on with others' projects, while others are willing to take the chance. It remains to be seen whether more clashes are averted.

'Phobia'. Earlier, Richa Chadda-starrer 'Cabaret' was also scheduled to release on the same date. The film's release was, however, pushed ahead to avoid an apparent direct face-off with other films. Director Kaustav Narayan Niyogi had said that the film was delayed as the makers 'want to do the promotions in a robust manner' and ensure a 'dignified release'. Apart from 'Cabaret', another film which was reported to release on May 27 was Anurag Kashyap's 'Raman Raghav 2.0'. The film's release on the same date would have meant a box office clash between Varma and Kashyap, who were once collaborators but later fell out. RGV's film traces the life of sandalwood smuggler and bandit 'Veerappan', while the 'Bombay Velvet' director's next film revolves around a serial-killer. On the possibility of a clash, Varma had even said 'May the best killer win', but the makers of 'Raman Raghav 2.0' announced that the film will hit theatres on June 24 instead.

Another clash which has been averted is between Irrfan Khan-starrer 'Madaari' and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer 'Te3n'. 'Madaari' will now release on July 15, instead of clashing Big B's film on June 10. Even Nagesh Kukunoor's 'Dhanak', earlier scheduled to open with 'Te3n', has been deferred by a week. The film will now clash with 'Udta Punjab', which stars Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan, on June 17. Even though the big SRKSalman clash has been avoided, the next big box office clash seems between Akshay Kumar- starrer 'Rustom' and Hrithik Roshan-starrer 'Mohenjo Daro'. Both 'Rustom' and 'Mohenjo Daro' are scheduled to release on August 12. While 'Rustom' is helmed by '1920 London' director Tinu Suresh Desai, 'Mohenjo Daro' marks the return of Ashutosh Gowariker after six years since his last film, 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey'. As of now, both directors have said that they are set to open the film on the scheduled dates with no change in the release.

By avoiding the controversies that surround Dalbir Kaur and the existence of her other siblings, scriptwriters Utkarshini Vashishtha and Rajesh Beri's screenplay skillfully manoeuvres the narration, to stir a sense of patriotism among the audience. The film is emotionally draining. It brings tears to your eyes. The dialogues are everyday speech, but there are instances when the lines are dramatic and uplift the scenes. This is obvious in the scene where Sarbjit

speaks to his lawyer Owais in the prison. Some of the scenes in the film, seem inspired by classics. This is particularly evident. when Sarabjit breaks down emotionally and cries, "Save me sister, save me." This particular shot reminds you of a scene in Ritwik Gathak's "Meghe Dake Tara", where the heroine pleads to her brother to save her. Here the scene may not be as dramatic as in Ghatak's film but is eventually effective. With excellent production values, the film is well-mounted. The cinematography by Kiran Deohans is steady and remarkable. With brilliant lighting, his frames are atmospheric. With his wide-angle lenses and tight close-ups, he brilliantly captures the claustrophobic space and the fine nuances of Randeep's haunting performance. The sets are realistic and transition of the colour palette, is evident in the costumes of the ladies, which from bright colourful clothes gradually turn into muted hues. The songs mesh seamlessly into the narration and the background score effectively heightens the viewing experience. The film is evenly paced with a few lengthy and unwarranted scenes but overall, Sarbjit Atwal's story is worth a watch, as it touches the right emotional chord.

The problem is that all of these tests only evaluate how well a person sees. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Relying on vision tests alone presents several risks to the average person,â&#x20AC;? says Alberta optometrist, Dr. Jared Long. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Several conditions, some of them quite serious, can only be detected during comprehensive eye exams.â&#x20AC;? This entails a series of tests and procedures, ranging from having a patient read an eye chart to more complex examinations, such as using a high-powered microscope to examine the tiny structures inside the eyes. Essentially, says the doctor, it's a physical for your eyes. Chantal and Jason Delarge say they know just how important a complete eye health exam really is. Their daughter Dallis was diagnosed with

retinoblastoma, a tumour of the retina, after visiting Dr. Long. Thankfully, they said, early detection of the condition meant Dallis was able to undergo immediate treatment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If there's one thing I could say to other parents, it's definitely get your children's eyes checked no matter what their age,â&#x20AC;? Chantal points out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I didn't take Dallis to the optometrist, we'd be in big trouble for sure.â&#x20AC;? Retinoblastoma is just one condition that is identifiable through an eye exam. Diabetes, hypertension and other forms of cancer can also be detected by examining the inside of the eye. This emphasizes the need for people of all ages to visit an optometrist on a regular basis. Dr. Long advises that infants undergo their first comprehensive eye exam between the ages of six and nine months; pre-school children should be examined at least once between the ages of two and five; school-aged children and seniors benefit by being checked annually; and adults aged 20 to 64 benefit with an exam at least every two years. Alberta Health covers the cost of annual eye exams for children until they turn 19 and for seniors 65 and older.

The young talent surging out of Canada culminated with our nation's first ever number-one NBA draft pick in 2013, so it's no surprise that more Canadian kids are picking up basketballs. For young players, however, the pursuit of success is often expensive. The cost of coaching, camps, and tournaments can lead to hard choices

for financially disadvantaged families. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Support is available, however, if you know where to look,â&#x20AC;? says Landon French, president of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jumpstart works overtime to help give kids the resources they need to play their favourite sports.â&#x20AC;? Last year alone, he explains, Jumpstart helped nearly 8,000 kids play basketball. Since 2005, the charity has helped over 1million children across Canada get involved in organized sport and physical activity. One of those kids was Juevol Myles. After losing his father when he was only three, Juevol and his two siblings were raised by their single mother in

Ajax, Ontario. He fell in love with basketball after watching his older brother Jermaine play. Hard work on the court led to success and Juevol was selected to play for the Canadian Junior Team. Unfortunately, the costs of taking his game to the next level became unmanageable for his family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That's when Juevol's coach introduced him to Jumpstart,â&#x20AC;? French points out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It helped him cover the costs of his necessary training and camps â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and this support soon led to a scholarship to play NCAA Division I Basketball. Even better, Juevol graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in psychology and

According to a federal government report, only 9 per cent of kids aged five to 17, get the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Don't let an overloaded car send you packing (NC) More Canadians than ever before say they would like to travel in Canada this year. Will you be one of them? No matter whether it's a trip to the cottage or a scenic drive in the Rockies or along the shores of the Atlantic, packing the car for a road trip requires some advance planning. “Prior to heading out on the road, it's a good idea to make sure you've checked your vehicle thoroughly and that you have everything you need inside your car and outside,” says Darryl Croft, automotive maintenance expert at OK Tire. “The peace of mind provided by knowing your car is mechanically sound means that you can fully focus on the trip ahead.” Croft offers his best car-packing tips to ensure everyone arrives at their final destination, happy and safe: 1. Respect the vehicle's load

capacity. To make sure you're not over-packing the car and burning too much gasoline, check how much weight your vehicle can handle before you load it up. For most cars, this information is printed on the door placard inside the driver's side door. In addition to saving on gas, you may prevent a suspension issue from occurring that could affect your car's braking time and distance. 2. Maximize space. Storage space will vary depending on the vehicle, but the general rule of thumb is that the heaviest items should be placed as far forward and as close to the floor as possible in the cargo area. This will keep the car's centre of gravity low. Lighter items should be placed on top and secured. Don't forget to keep necessary items,

such as sweaters or diapers within easy reach. To free up some extra space: an unrolled sleeping bag makes for great

cushioning, and a strategically placed cooler in between backseat passengers can easily transform into a card game table. 3. People management. Don't forget to leave space in the car and account for family members while you're packing up the luggage. People add weight too, and depending on where you've packed bags, boxes or coolers, where people sit will also impact your gas consumption. If travelling with children, consider where you'll need to place car seats and their weight in your calculations, as well as who might need to sit up front to prevent car sickness and who may want to sit together to partake in a good old fashion game of 'I Spy.' 4. Bring a roadside emergency kit. You never know what is going to happen while on a road trip, so it is best to be prepared for all possible scenarios to ensure a happy vacation. Bring along a roadside emergency kit that includes items to tackle some of the most common challenges that can possibly go wrong, such as: foam tire sealant, water bottle, jumper cables, duct tape, tow rope, emergency light and/or flashlight, as well as batteries and a multi-purpose tool.
