OTTAWA: The Punjabi community in Canada made history on Wednesday when two turbaned Sikhs, among four Indian Canadians, were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers, as 42year-old Justin Trudeau took oath as the country's 23rd Prime Minister at a grand public ceremony in Ottawa. While 42-year-old Indo-Canadian Harjit Sajjan was appointed Minister of Defence, 38-year-old Navdeep Bains got the portfolio of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. Another Sikh, Amarjeet Sohi, who

A young Sikh woman, Bardish Chagger has been sworn in as Minister for Small Business and Tourism. Justin Trudeau, the 42-year-old son of charismatic former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau who is credited with opening Canada to new immigrants in the 1970s, led the Liberal Party to win 184 seats in the 338-member House of Commons.

Prime Minister of Canada Hon. Justin Trudeau’s message The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, today issued the following statement after the swearing-in of the 29th Ministry: “Canadians from all across this country sent a message that it is time for real change, and I am deeply honoured by the faith they have placed in my team and me. Canadians chose a positive and optimistic plan for the future, and we will immediately begin implementing our plan for a strong middle class. “Today we have the pleasure of introducing the team of extraordinary Canadians who will serve in the new Ministry. This strong, diverse, and experienced team will serve all Canadians, and for the first time in our country’s history, there will be an equal number of women and men around the Cabinet table. “Canadians expect to see their values and priorities reflected in their government, and we have listened closely to them. Canadians told us what kind of government they want, and we built the plan to make it happen. “We are committed to investing in our economy, strengthening the middle class, and helping those working hard to join it. We will invest in job creation and broad-based prosperity to ensure every Canadian has a real and fair chance to succeed. “We will shine more light on

Openness and transparency will be our constant companions, and we will work to restore Canadians’ trust in their government and in our democracy. We will also reinvest in our cultural and creative industries and create an immigration system grounded in both compassion and economic opportunity. “Canada is strong not in spite of its diversity, but because of it, and we are committed to bringing new leadership and a new tone to Ottawa. We also made a commitment to pursue our goals with a renewed sense of collaboration. Most importantly, we will be a government that governs for all Canadians and brings Canadians together. “We will work tirelessly to honour the trust Canadians have given us, and together build an even better future for our children and grandchildren.”

Drugs can help overcome workout laziness

London: Tired of being too lazy to exercise? Well, a recent research has suggested that drugs can help lazy people with their keep-fit classes. In what has been described as 'doping for lazy people' a University of Kent endurance expert has advocated the use of psychoactive drugs to encourage sedentary people to exercise. Together with lack of time, physical exertion is one of the main perceived

barriers to exercise. This is not surprising because humans evolved to be 'lazy', i.e. to conserve energy. Samuele Marcora suggests that reducing perception of effort during exercise using caffeine or other psychoactive drugs (e.g. methylphenidate and modafinil) could help many people stick to their fitness plans. Whilst acknowledging that such an intervention is both drastic and

controversial, Marcora points out that perception of effort is one of the main reasons why most people choose sedentary activities for their leisure time. Compared to watching television (zero effort), even moderate-intensity physical activities like walking require considerable effort. He says finding a way that makes people with very low motivation to do even moderate exercise, like walking, could be particularly useful. Similarly, a reduction in perception of effort would be very helpful to the many people who find exercise difficult because they are overweight and/or exercise after work in a state of mental fatigue. Marcora also states that whilst there is no strong ethical opposition to the use of psychoactive drugs to help quit smoking (nicotine) or treat obesity(appetite suppressants), the negative perception of doping in sport may prevent the use of stimulants and other psychoactive drugs to treat physical inactivity.

Harjit Singh Sajjan, new defence minister, a Canadian military veteran who knows ‘reality of war’ ADRIAN HUMPHREYS Many defence ministers pose for photos with military hardware, but few pull off the true badass combat stance as well as Harjit Singh Sajjan — draped in flak jacket and camouflage, gripping an assault rifle on an actual battlefield. Sajjan was, until recently, a decorated Lieutenant-Colonel in the Armed Forces, the first Sikh Canadian to command an army regiment. “Command breaks down barriers because no one looks at what you look like when the bullets are flying,” he said in 2011. “Having to carry your, you know, wounded soldiers off the battlefield, not just wounded, but the ones that have been killed and place them into a helicopter, nothing prepares you for that.” Sajjan, sworn in Wednesday as Canada’s new Minister of National Defence, was, in military lingo, “a trigger puller.” He was deployed to BosniaHerzegovina and three times to Afghanistan, for which he was awarded one of the military’s highest recognitions, the Order of Military Merit, for reducing the Taliban’s influence in Kandahar Province. “He has a taste for the reality of war and that’s very, very important,” said David Bercuson, director of the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary. “He will have seen the aftermath of the effect of war on some of our men and women, which is a major issue with veteran’s affairs,” said Bercuson. Although few details of Sajjan’s military service are widely known, his personal story has brought accolades of being a “war hero” and a “trailblazer.”

Now 44, he arrived in Canada from India with his parents at the age of six. His father worked in a mill and his mother picked berries with an eye to supporting their children through school. He served as a reservist, and was deployed with the Canadian peacekeeping forces to Bosnia in 1996. In 2006 he served in Afghanistan, playing a key intelligence advisory role to Brig.-Gen David Fraser in the successful Operation Medusa offensive against the Taliban. He returned to Afghanistan in 2009 and 2011. Rising to the rank of reserve lieutenant-colonel, he was named commander of the B.C. Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own), in 2012. Sajjan joined the Vancouver Police Department in 1999. As a detective, he worked in Vancouver’s gang squad to help pull kids off the path to a gangster’s life.

Spend 25% of day standing to cut obesity risk

Newyork (ANI): A new study has found a simple way to reduce the obesity risk. All you have to do is spend at least one-quarter of the day standing. Standing for at least one-quarter of the day has been linked to lower odds of obesity in the study led by the American Cancer Society in collaboration with The Cooper Institute, the University of Texas and the University of Georgia. While sedentary behavior (such as watching TV and commuting time) has been linked to negative health effects, it is unclear whether more time spent standing has protective health benefits. The study found that among men, standing a quarter of the time was linked to a 32 percent reduced likelihood of obesity (body fat percentage). Standing half the time was associated with a 59percent reduced likelihood of obesity. But standing more than three-quarters of the time was not associated with a lower risk of obesity. In women, standing a quarter, half, and three quarters of the time was associated with 35 percent, 47 percent and 57 percent respective reductions in the likelihood of abdominal obesity (waist circumference). No relationship between standing and metabolic syndrome was found among women or men. Researchers found that men meeting physical activity guidelines and standing a quarter to half of the time had a 57 percent reduced likelihood for abdominal obesity, whereas those meeting guidelines and standing three quarters of the time or more had a 64 percent lower odds for abdominal obesity.

Guest Editorial Wishing Everyone Happy Healthy Diwali! DIWALI, the festival of lights, is just a few days away. This year Diwali celebration is on Wednesday, November 11th, same day as ‘Remembrance Day’, a National Holiday dedicated to the fallen war heroes. In India, Diwali day is a National Holiday. People stay at home and celebrate Diwali with friends and family.

This

year, those living in North America, will also spend Diwali day at home, close to their loved ones, celebrating Diwali and Remembrance Day. Diwali, the word comes from ‘Deepawali’ – a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Rows of Lights.’ It is celebrated on the amavasya or the no moon day in the Hindu month of Kartik (October - November). Diwali is one of the most charming festivals of India, which is celebrated throughout the country. India dazzles on Diwali day as all streets and houses light up with the traditional Diwali divas, candles and strands of small electric bulbs to mark this festival of light. Diwali is supposed to lead us to the light of knowledge from the darkness of ignorance. The preparations for the Diwali celebrations have already begun. Big sales are taking place at the Indian grocery and clothing stores. For sweet shops Diwali is the biggest money earning day. Hundreds and thousands of dollars is spent by Indians on buying gifts. Everywhere, people eagerly await

Remembrance Day Remembrance Day is symbolized by the artificial poppies that people wear and place at war memorials. Many people wear artificial poppies on their clothes in the weeks before Remembrance Day. Red poppies symbolize the memory of those who died and white poppies campaigns for non-military interventions in conflict situations. On November 11, special church services are organized. These often include the playing of "The Last Post", a reading of the fourth verse of the 'Ode of Remembrance' and two minutes silence at 11:00 (or 11am). After the service, wreaths are laid at local war memorials. The official Canadian national ceremonies are held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Ontario, according to a strict protocol. A service is held and wreaths are laid by armed services representatives. In May 2000 the remains of a Canadian soldier who died in France in World War I, but was never been identified, were laid in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial. Since then, members of the public have laid poppies, letters and photographs on the tomb. Similar services and events are held throughout Canada. Some schools that are open on Remembrance Day hold special assemblies, lessons and presentations on armed conflicts and those who died in them. The poppies may be worn or placed singly or as wreaths. The use of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance comes from a poem written by John McCrae, a Canadian doctor serving in the military. The poem is called In Flanders Fields and describes the poppies growing in the Flemish graveyards where soldiers were buried. Poppies grow well in soil that has

been disturbed. They also grew in large numbers on battle fields. The red color of their petals reminded people of the blood lost by victims of and casualties in the conflict. Some people choose to wear white poppies to campaign for non-military interventions in conflict situations. Other symbols of Remembrance Day are the war memorials, which are often near the geographical center of communities. These commemorate members of the community, who have died in military action. A particularly well-known memorial is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa, Ontario. The military parades held on November 11 are also symbolic of Remembrance Day.

Reid received the S. Tara Singh Hayer Journalism Award, named after Surrey’s publisher who was assassinated at his home in Surrey on November 18, 1998. Hayer was a celebrated and outspoken journalist whose legacy included providing a voice to the marginalized communities that were ignored by other media outlets. David Dalley, honorary chair of Chetna Association and Dr. Ambedkar Federation described Reid as “one of Surrey’s most courageous and compassionate journalists” and “a multiplier of courage in our community”. The other two awards were named in honor of Dr. Ambedkar, a human rights champion who framed India’s constitution based on principles of equality, liberty and fraternity. Ambedkar was also successful at negotiating and enshrining safeguards for India’s one-quarter of a population that has been historically at the bottom of the social and economic hierarchy for thousands of years, also known as the “untouchables” or “Dalits” in India. The Dr. Ambedkar Arts & Literature Award was presented to the Writers International Network Canada for engaging poets globally regardless of their social, racial, economic, and caste identities. In recognition of contributions to the field of human rights, journalism and social justice, the Dr. Ambedkar Social Justice Award was presented to IT Productions CEO, Ms. Shushma Datt. Datt’s leadership for addressing race, caste, and gender based discrimination was a highlight of this year’s contribution she made, “Raising Hands Against Racism”.

Is sexting common among wedded pairs?

Palak Paneer Recipe With a Diwali Twist

Washington D.C, : As per a recent study, married couples do report sexting, but it is much less common than in young adult relationships and consists more of intimate talk with their partners than sending nude or nearly nude photos via mobile phones "Sexting Among Married Couples: Who is Doing It, and Are They More Satisfied?" further examines the link between sexting behavior and relationship satisfaction or ambivalence. Coauthors Brandon McDaniel, The Pennsylvania State University, College Park, and Michelle Drouin, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, report specific differences between sending sexy messages versus sexually explicit pictures and relationship quality for men compared to women with high/low levels of attachment anxiety or avoidance.

Photos by Aziz Dhamani

By Raj Thandhi, Palak paneer is a regular on the menu at the Pink Chai house, but this year I’m teaming up with Real Canadian Superstore to upgrade my basic recipe to a Diwali special! Palak paneer recipe When I was thinking about dishes that we tend to include on our Diwali menu, I kept going to back to creamy heavy sauces – shahi paneer, kofta with a cashew gravy, navratan korma – the one thing they all have in common is a rich flavour. The other common thing about those types of dishes is that they all take time to prepare, and often require specialty ingredients. My goal with this recipe was to share something that was easy to execute, uses ingredients that are readily available at your local Real Canadian Superstore, and was Diwali table worthy. Quite a tall order, but I think I pulled it off! I know that Indian cooking can be a little intimidating if you are a novice, or new to the cuisine, but it’s not that hard. I’ve always felt that the flavours in Indian cuisine are complex, but the techniques are much simpler than most people expect. The beauty of a recipe like palak paneer is – even with so many different flavours and spices in the mix, the dish is easy and quick to prepare.palak paneer recipe At our house we love to serve hot palak paneer with Suraj Garlic Naan. We’ve tried a lot of different brands of ready made naan and we always go back to Suraj. Zara prefers plan naan though so I always keep some of those in the freezer. I always heat up naan slowly in the oven though and slather them with butter before serving – they taste so good that way! In the following video you can see the step-by-step process for making my Diwali Palak Paneer, and just below I’ve written out all of the exact measurements for the ingredients. Palak Paneer Recipe {Serves 4} *note – this recipe calls for pureed spinach. I usually buy baby spinach leaves, blanch them in hot water and

puree. You can also use pureed canned or frozen spinach if that’s what you have on hand. Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups pureed spinach 1 small to medium sized red onion pureed 1 inch piece of ginger and 4 garlic cloves pureed into a paste 2 tomatoes pureed 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera) 1-2 dried red chillies, optional 2-3 Suraj bay leaves 3/4 tsp garam masala powder 1 tsp corriander powder 1/2 tsp cumin powder 1/2 tsp Suraj pomengrate powder Salt to tast 1 cup of paneer cubes â…“ to ½ cup water if needed 1/4 cup of whipped cream 2 tbsp oil or ghee or unsalted butter 1 tsp kasuri methi leaves/dry fenugreek leaves Method: Heat oil or ghee in your pan and

add in tempering spices; cumin seeds, dried red chillies, and Suraj bay leaves. Cook for 1-2 minutes until they are golden brown. Add onions, cook for 2-3 minutes until lightly golden brown and add garlic and ginger mix. Cook this together for another 3-4 minutes on medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent burning. Add pureed tomatoes and cook for 4-5 minutes on low to medium heat. Add cumin powder, corriander powder, salt, and Suraj pomegranate powder to the mixture and stir well. Add pureed spinach and cook for 6-7 minutes on low to medium heat. If the mixture feels thick, you can add a little water. Add the finishing spices; garam masala and kasuri methi, and then stir in the whipping cream. Now add the paneer cubes and cook on very low heat for 2-3 minutes to soften the cheese and bring all the flavours together. I hope you’ll give my Diwali palak

paneer recipe a try, and if you have a special family recipe you like to cook during the festival season, leave a comment and let me know what it is – it’s almost time to start planning my holiday menu!

Jessica Alba doesn't like 'skinny' eyebrows

Hollywood star Jessica Alba believes her biggest beauty mistake was plucking her eyebrows to look as "skinny as humanly possible" in the 2000s. "Right now I'm really into the brows. I feel like you can have nothing else on your face but a little concealer here and there and a strong brow," Alba told people.com. "I'm always envious of girls who have (ones) that aren't over-plucked because the 90s just ruined my brows. I've been on the mend ever since. And I for sure in the 2000s was still guilty of just making them as skinny as humanly possible," she added. The 34-year-old actress also said that she feels most "amazing" when she gets compliments from her husband Cash Warren. "We were on vacation recently and my whole head was braided. I was too tired to take them out (before bed), so when I woke up my braids were still in my hair-and I had a little bit of a sun kissed face. "Usually when I wake up, I look busted, but for some reason (Cash) was like, 'Babe you look really pretty.' And I was like, 'Oh?! Really? That's amazing'," Alba added.. By Santa Banta News Network

Drew Barrymore didn't fall in love at first sight Actress Drew Barrymore says she didn't fall in love with husband Will Kopelman at the first sight. The ‘Blended’ star, who married the art advisor in June 2012 after more than a year of dating, says it took her a while to realise he was the perfect man for her, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Reminiscing about the beginning of their relationship, Barrymore told InStyle magazine: “I mean, it was never really love at first sight. Will struck a lot of my pragmatic sides.” “He was someone who was always reachable on the phone, someone who was a classy human

being, someone who had this incredible blueprint of a family that I don't have. At the same time, what I love about him is that he embodies the power of choice. He chooses to be a good person every day." While she’s now blissfully happy, Barrymore says she and her spouse are very different. ‘We’ve made many compromises and concessions, but when it comes to how we deliver likes and dislikes, we're polar opposites. It's still really hard,’ she said. By Santa Banta News

Zayn Malik misses ex-fiancee? Former One Direction member Zayn Malik has reportedly told his ex-fiancee Perrie Edwards he still loves her. Malik is said to have used a text message to open his heart to his exfiancee, reports mirror.co.uk. He ended their four-year relationship earlier this year with a single message out of the blue, despite having planned a wedding with the Little Mix star. He has since been seen out with a string of girls, something which a source close to Edwards says is "killing her". And friends of Edwards are said to fear that she will take him back. The source said: "Zayn has started messaging Perrie again saying he misses and still loves her. "Although Perrie is trying to be strong and move on, it's obvious to everyone around her she's still in love with Zayn. "Seeing him with other women is

killing her." Edwards has been linked with former TOWIE star Joey Essex and is currently promoting Little Mix's third album "Get Weird" in Australia . But would she be willing to go back to Malik?

Roots

"So far they haven't met up and Zayn hasn't actually said he wants to get back together, just that he misses her," said the source. "Her friends are worried if he begs her to take him back she could crumble. By Santa Banta News Network

Dear SOS Dear SOS: I married my husband in India and 9 years ago I came to Canada. Four years ago, my parents and two of my younger brothers, whom my husband and I sponsored came to Canada. Since then both of my brothers have become old enough to be married. One of my brother says he doesn’t want to marry in India and the other one already has a girlfriend in India whom he wants to marry. The problem is that my husband and my in-laws have been pressuring me to convince my family to marry one or both of my brothers into their close relatives in India, so that their relative’s daughters can come to Canada. My husband and his parents are very dominating. They don’t have a good relationship with my family. They put my family down at any chance they get. My in-laws were wealthy landlords in India and my father was working in public service. So they think they are better than my family. Because they sponsored my family, they think

(Sabrina Offers Support)

my family now owes them to do whatever they want. I have tried to explain to them it’s not possible, as one of my brother has a girlfriend he loves and he wants to marry her and the other one doesn’t want to marry in India. But they refuse to listen. They keep ranting if my brothers don’t want to marry the girls, then they should do the marriage in paper only so that the girls can come to Canada. Three times in the last year and half my husband has kicked me out of the house. He told me if my family doesn’t want to have relationship with his family by helping to sponsor their relatives from India then I should just go live with my family. Each time some family friends and relatives have helped to talk to them into taking me back. I have two small kids. And I don’t know what to do. Last time he left me with my family for two months before his family agreed that I can come home. Again, it has started. Every day

or other day he fights with me. Telling me how bad my family is. I fear one of these day he will again kick me out of the house. I don’t know what to do. Helpless in Surrey Dear Helpless in Surrey: What your husband and in-laws are asking your family to do is illegal. They could all go to jail for that. I hate to say this, but I will, as I am sure you already know this anyways. You have a loser for a husband. As long as you allow him and his family to abuse you this way, they will continue to do so. Tough as it is, it’s time to put a stop to this abuse. It’s not healthy for you or your young kids. You don’t say if he physically abuses you, but I can only assume he does. Clearly, tell your husband to stop this or you will make a report to the police and tell them what they have been doing to you and your family. Next time he asks you to leave, just pack your bag and go. Don’t come back. If your family can’t help you then ask your local women’s shelter for help. Try to record or write down everything that happens to you. If your husband beats you or makes a threat on your life, make sure you let your doctor or someone in authority know. Any injury you receive due to abuse by your husband or your in-laws make sure to file a report with

your doctor, so that it’s on file. It would also help your case to collect some evidence. Whatever you do, keep yourself and your kids safe. If you have a problem talking to the doctor or police then ask a relative or family friends to help you. See if you can record their demands on a tape recorder or on a camera. This will help you in the long run, should something happen. Don’t worry about the finances. If you need to live on your own you can apply for welfare assistance. Welfare department can help you with rent and grocery. Good Luck. And keep safe.

Why Alia is avoiding talks on 'Shuddhi'? Alia Bhatt is not keen to divulge any details about 'Shuddhi' amid strong rumours that the troubled project is finally being shelved. The last time "Shuddhi" was in news is when Alia and Varun Dhawan were announced as its new cast. Now, gossip mills are abuzz about its undecided fate but there is no official statement from the makers regarding the same. When prodded on the Karan Johar project, Alia said, "I don't know why I am asked this question. I believe to talk about the fate of the film on behalf of the makers is wrong. I am just a representative of the project. I am not the maker. So any details regarding 'Shuddhi' or any other film should always be discussed with the people who make the film." The 22-year-old actress, meanwhile, is excited about her other upcoming film "Udta Punjab" which stars Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. On working with Kareena, she said, "We haven't done any scenes together but I had the opportunity to be around her (Kareena).. see her. We spent one whole day together. It was a 'Shaandaar' (her upcoming film) experience." On comparisons with her industry senior, Alia said,"There can be no way where there can be comparisons between us." Initially, "Shuddhi" was to star Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik. But it got derailed due to Hrithik's health issues leading to his exit following which Kareena also walked out.

Is Katrina annoyed about something?

Here's why Salman will be visiting Ahmedabad Superstar Salman Khan, who is returning to filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya's production banner Rajshri Productions with the forthcoming film "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo", will kickstart the promotions of the family drama from here. The actor will travel to the city in Gujarat on Wednesday to attend Garba programmes and enjoy the Navratri festival. "Salman is very excited to begin the promotions and he is looking forward to

playing Garba in Ahmedabad," the spokesperson of the film said in a statement. He will be joined by his co-star Sonam Kapoor. After the trailer launch of "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" earlier this month, this will be the first time that Salman will be interacting with the media with respect to the film. -By Santa Banta News Network

Katrina Kaif has not asked filmmaker Anurag Basu to fire up her chemistry with rumoured boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor in their upcoming comedy-drama film "Jagga Jasoos", says her spokesperson. According to reports, Katrina is said to be worried about Ranbir and his former girlfriend Deepika Padukone's sizzling chemistry in the forthcoming film "Tamasha". "These rumours are clearly someone's imagination running wild. Though this makes fodder for gossip, it is categorically and entirely untrue. These stories are misleading to the audience and fans in general. Such idle gossip is really avoidable and childish," Katrina's spokesperson said in a statement. Deepika and Ranbir are returning on the silver screen together after a gap of two years with filmmaker Imtiaz Ali's romantic drama film "Tamasha", which is slated to release on November 27. Meanwhile, "Jagga Jasoos", which is slated to release in June next year, will feature the couple after 2010's "Raajneeti". -By Santa Banta News Network

A look at Geeta Basra and Harbhajan Singh's love story Geeta Basra may have had an uneventful Bollywood career - she debuted with 'Dil Diya Hai' (2006) and followed it up with 'The Train' (2007), both opposite Emraan Hashmi - but she stayed in news as cricketer Harbhajan Singh's special someone. After an eightyear courtship, the couple ties the knot at Phagwara, near Harbhajan’s hometown Jalandhar in Punjab. A beauty pageant winner, Geeta hails from Portsmouth in England where her parents run a convenience store. Harbhajan and Geeta's love story began in 2007 when she was introduced to him through a common associate at an event. They clicked, but had to be discrete. At that time, Geeta had big Bollywood dreams, but after her films didn't work at the box office, she decided to concentrate on her personal life. Quiet entry In 2008, Harbhajan took part in a dance reality show called 'Ek Haseena, Ek Khiladi'. Telly actress Mona Singh was the cricketer's dance partner and they even went on to win it. When in Mumbai

for the show's promotions, the cricketer

was put up at a five-star hotel in Bandra. Eyebrows were raised when Geeta was spotted arriving at the hotel to meet Harbhajan. At that time, Geeta stuck to her "just good friends" claim and hung out with him along with a bunch of common friends. In 2010, Geeta was spotted hovering around Film City Studios on the set of the dance reality show, 'Zara Nachke Dikha' for which the cricketer had been shooting the final episode as a celebrity guest. Harbhajan and his fellow teammate Irfan Pathan, who was also a

guest on the show, were in one vanity van. After a while, Irfan stepped out and Geeta went in. When SRK took note At an IPL awards ceremony hosted by Shah Rukh Khan, the star had some fun at Harbhajan's expense when he asked: "Bhajji apka ghar kab Basra hai?" While the latter couldn't stop blushing, SRK hurled another googly at him: "Gita ki kasam kha kar kaho!" Opening up In 2012, the couple stepped out at the Formula 1 race at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida and post that, Geeta started accompanying her beau to IPL bashes hosted by Mukesh and Nita Ambani at Antilla. They would also be spotted dining out with Sachin Tendulkar whenever Harbhajan was in town. Music on my mind In 2012, Geeta was keen to get Harbhajan hooked to the Romanian band, Deepside Deejays, of which she is a big fan. The group's tracks including Beautiful Days, Get Shaky and remixed versions of Don't Say It's Over and Never Be Alone are always on Geeta's playlist. She was also keen that he accompany her to one of their concerts this month. Big step Harbhajan did a cameo in 'Second Hand Husband' starring Geeta. The film, which released in July this year, had Geeta looking for true love. When she finds the man, the camera pans towards (no prizes for guessing) Harbhajan Singh. Santa Banta

How to Motivate a Multigenerational Workforce (NC) Four generations are now participating in today's workforce, each bringing different characteristics, work habits, leadership styles and motivators. These varying values and beliefs can sometimes lead to challenges, which is why colleagues need to learn how to work effectively together. Getting to know the generational motivators in your workplace can increase productivity and help achieve goals: Millennials. The millennial generation is now the single largest segment in the workforce. Compared to their parents, millennials want to break out of the 9–5 mould, aiming for flexible work hours where they can accomplish tasks at their own time and pace. They are high embracers of technology, which can sometimes lead to miscommunications between co-workers and bosses and make them less aware of the thoughts, feelings and viewpoints of others. Gen X. Generation X is considered anyone born from the early 1960s to the late 19870s. They are goal-oriented, independent thinkers who like to take on responsibility and question authority. This generation works best with managers who welcome their input, give feedback, and consider and implement their ideas. They like an environment where they have autonomy and the opportunity to continually advance. Baby Boomers. In the workplace, baby boomers are predominantly in their 40s and 50s and are well-established in their careers, holding high positions of authority. They are hardworking, believe in a hierarchical structure, and are motivated by perks and prestige.

Traditionalists. The oldest group in

the workforce, born between 1922 and

1945, traditionalists demonstrate strength by their dedication and loyalty. They respect authority, value security, adhere to rules and respond well to direct leadership. Dr. Lori LaCivita, director for the MS and PhD in Industrial and (I-O) Psychology Organizational programs at Walden University, explains that one major key to closing the generational gap in the workplace and creating an environment where everyone can thrive is training employees on emotional intelligence—the ability to understand emotions as well as their effects. Raising emotional intelligence gives us the tools to more effectively address and engage each other across generations.

New technology to reduce food waste (NC) Get ready for better, longlasting potatoes. A new potato designed to be more sustainable is making its way to market – and it's completely innate. J.R. Simplot Co., an Idaho-based plant science company, has leveraged a naturally occurring process called RNA interference (RNAi) to improve how the vegetable holds up when stored. Recently evaluated and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Innate potato is less susceptible to black spot bruising, often caused by bumps, falls and rough handling during harvest and storage. With more than three billion pounds of potatoes discarded by consumers every year, a large portion due to bruising and black spot, this solution could be just one of the ways consumers save their pennies

at the grocery store. Like another recently approved genetically engineered crop, the Arctic Apple, Innate potatoes don't brown after being cut, peeled and exposed to air – all thanks to RNAi technology. Through the use of RNAi technology, the enzyme that would normally cause a potato to brown and bruise is turned off, so now Innate potatoes keep their colour even after peeling. Available in three varieties, Russet Burbank, Ranger Russet and Atlantic, Innate potatoes are genetically engineered using the potato's own DNA. Genes can be selected, rearranged and reintroduced – creating the ideal potato with exactly the same taste and grown the same way. Health Canada and the U.S. Food

and Drug Administration have concluded that Innate potatoes pose no health risk to humans, other species or the environment. It may take a few years before Innate potatoes make their way into Canadian grocery stores but in the meantime, J.R. Simplot Co. says it is looking at additional ways to improve potatoes, especially to reduce the impact of a potentially devastating disease called “late blight and to make potatoes even healthier by adding vitamins and other nutrients.

3 reasons why reading is important for children

Pay monthly from your bank account or credit card. Get a free quote in just 15 minutes. Call now! (NC) Despite the proliferation of high tech mobile devices, tablets and laptops, the benefits of simply reading a book endure. Fostering a love of reading among children has long-term pay-offs. It teaches them new values and lessons, exercises concentration skills, and even helps them learn new vocabulary or different ways to phrase a thought. The National Reading Campaign, organized by readers, writers, publishers, educators and others focused on creating a society of lifelong readers, reports some of the top reasons why reading is so important: • Readers have better physical health, mental health and empathy. • Reading for just six minutes can reduce stress by as much as 60 per cent, slow your heart beat, ease muscle tension and alter your state of mind. • Reading has better stress-reduction outcomes than playing video games, drinking tea, listening to music or even going for a walk. Reading is important on many levels. So teachers across the country work with innovative approaches to ensure every student is equipped with, not just reading skills, but a love of reading that will last a lifetime. “As students get older, it can become more challenging to keep them engaged in reading,â€? says North Vancouver elementary teacher Mrs. Harris. Providing realistic content helps. For high school students with learning disabilities, integrating familiar technology assists with repetition exercises to boost reading. Not all teachers who want to implement this love of reading for their NEW PRODUCT students have access to the resources and technology necessary to do so. Apply the 5 habits of an informed investor (NC) When it comes to managing our savings, many of us think we lack the knowledge and investment savvy to succeed on our own. That's why many Canadians turn to financial advisors to get started and to keep on track. But having an advisor does not mean you should be ignoring your investments. Informed investing doesn't have to mean spending hours each week pouring over complex documents and financial journals if you develop these five good habits: 1. Have a plan. It doesn't have to be elaborate – just one that makes sense for your short-term and long-term financial goals. It can be as simple as having a plan to put money aside for a rainy day or a longer term plan for your retirement. 2. Save a little every month. We've all heard the rule-of-thumb that you

should “pay yourself first” by putting money into savings. But with so many opportunities to spend, it's easy to slide. Sign up for an automatic savings plan

and watch the miracle of compounding help your savings grow. 3. Open your statements. As simple as this sounds, many people don't bother

to open their monthly and annual statements. Take the time to read your statement and learn about any terms you don't understand. 4. Communicate. If you use a financial advisor, be sure to keep your advisor up-to-date on any changes – both good and bad – that might affect your financial situation. Deciding what to do with added income from a raise is as important as adjusting your plan to deal with a job loss. 5. Meet regularly with your advisor. Do it even if there are no changes. Take your statements to the meeting and ask questions about anything you don't understand. Be aware that over the next few months, your investment statements will be changing – becoming easier to read and understand. Then, starting in about a year, you'll receive new and important information about your investments in reader-friendly formats with clear explanations of various terms. You will get the most out of the changes that are coming if you begin building your good habits now, and take the first steps to becoming an informed investor.

(NC) Changes coming soon to client statements will tell Canadians more than ever before about their investments. After December 31, 2015, all securities firms are required to provide the following information if they are not already doing so: 1. The total amount you paid to purchase your investment, including any transaction charges related to your purchase. 2. The price at which your investment can be sold on the market at a point in time. 3. The total value of all cash and investments in your account at the beginning and the end of the statement period. 4. Whether your mutual fund is subject to a deferred sales charge – a fee that does not have to be paid until you sell your fund. After a certain number of years, these charges usually decline to zero. 5. Whether your mutual fund is covered by an investor protection fund and the name of that fund. 6. Information as to who is named as the owner of the investment, and a description of how it is held. [Some investments are held in the client's name and some are held in the firm's name. It's up to you.] Ask your financial advisor to explain any terms or content included in your statement that you don't fully understand. Better conversations with your advisor lead to more informed decisions that help you reach your financial goals.

Celebrating South Asian contributions to B.C.'s shared history

The South Asian contribution to the province’s and the country’s shared history will be on permanent display in the B.C. legislature after last week’s announcement by Premier Christy Clark that an historically symbolic flag would be installed inside the Parliament Buildings. The 1874 version of the Red Ensign flag is one of the first Canadian flags to display the emblem of British Columbia after the province joined Confederation in 1871. The flag was presented to the province by Steven Purewal, founder of Indus Media Foundation Canada, in honour of the contributions made to British Columbia, Canada, and the British Crown by the Punjabi community. It is dedicated to Kesur Singh, a Risaldar Major Captain in the British Indian Army who arrived in B.C. as one of Canada’s first Sikh immigrants. It is the version of the Canadian flag that would have flown over government buildings when he arrived. “With Remembrance Day two weeks away, this is a meaningful time to commemorate our history – and better understand how we got to today,” said Premier Clark. “The prosperous, free, and multicultural province we’re so fortunate to call home was built through the hard

work and sacrifice of people who came from halfway around the world in search of a better life.” Many early South Asian Sikh pioneers were veterans of colonial Punjabi regiments that had served the Crown since 1849, when Punjab became part of the British Empire. They came to Canada looking for a better life, but faced difficult conditions. In 1914, the Komagata Maru ship carrying 376 passengers from India was turned away from the port in Vancouver. In 2008, the B.C. Legislature formal apologized for the incident. During the First World War Punjabi soldiers were fighting shoulder-toshoulder with Canadians. They suffered enormous losses – and in death, 100 years after the war, they lie beside their Canadian brothers-in-arms in 17 cemeteries scattered across French and Belgian Flanders. “This centennial is an opportunity to commemorate those who lost their lives, but also to engage today’s youth and diverse communities about the significance of the sacrifices that were made,” said Purewal. “During WWI, nearly 500,000 Punjabis fought in a joint cause with Canada, despite the discriminatory conditions prevailing at

the time -- their service and notion of duty was truly remarkable.” Premier Clark and Purewal were joined by members of Surrey-based 3300 British Columbia Regiment (Bhai Kanhaiya) Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, along with leaders from B.C.’s Sikh communities. The history and contributions of the South Asian communities to B.C. are part of the province’s new K-12 curriculum being phased in over the next three years. “We’re not just talking about history, we’re talking about today,” said Premier Clark. “B.C. is a place where we recognize and embrace the contributions of all diverse communities, including

South Asians, including First Nations, including Europeans – and celebrate the new generation moving forward.” Quick Facts: B.C. is the most ethnically diverse province in Canada and welcomes nearly 40,000 new immigrants every year. Sikhs are the largest South Asian ethnic group in Canada. · Established in 2013, the 3300 RCACC is the first cadet corps in Canada to embrace the Sikh culture and contribution to Canada’s military history as part of their corps identity. One-quarter of the people in B.C. are self-identified visible minorities.
