Gurneet Dhaliwal helps UFV’s Cascades to power past SFU
Abbotsford: Gurneet Dhaliwal had a breakout performance on behalf of the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team on Wednesday evening, powering the Cascades to a 2-1 exhibition victory over Simon Fraser University. Dhaliwal, a rookie forward out of Surrey, scored in the 25th and 54th minutes to stake the CIS No. 4-ranked hosts to a 2-0 lead at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Their NCAA Div. II foes cut the deficit in half on a Sophie D’Souza goal in the late going, but UFV hung on for the win. “We saw today what a special attacking player she is,” Cascades head coach Rob Giesbrecht said of Dhaliwal. “It’s hard to put into words what she brings in the attack — it’s just those little touches, those little movements she can do. She’s a very cunning player — she’s very difficult to mark, and she finds little pockets of space to be dangerous.” The Cascades opened the game with a great scoring chance, but Clan keeper Priya Sandhu came charging out and narrowly beat UFV’s Danica Kump to a through ball. At the other end of the pitch, SFU had a couple of great looks on a goalmouth scramble following a free kick, but saw one shot glance off the crossbar and another cleared off the line by Cascades defender Dayle Jeras. Later on, UFV keeper Kayla Klim had to be sharp to tip Christina Dickson’s rising shot over the
bar.
Dhaliwal notched her first goal as a Cascade off a Tristan Corneil corner, soaring to head the ball home. She made it 2-0 after halftime with a deft finish off a cross from fellow rookie Brittany Zacharuk. The Clan didn’t have many clean looks at goal after halftime, but D’Souza snuck one past Cascades backup keeper Emily Harold in the 79th minute. Krystiana Corrado picked up the assist. “I thought the girls did well,” Giesbrecht summarized. “It was good that we got everybody in, and we got to rest a few players as well, which was important. “I think there’s a lot of goals ahead for Gurneet. I was really happy with Brittney Zacharuk today, too. I thought she was fantastic on the ball. Tristan and Dayle had very strong games for us in the back, and Harman Billen played great in the midfield.” Wednesday’s game marked the end of the Cascades’ preseason schedule. They open the Canada West regular season with a two-game homestand at Abby Senior next week, taking on the Victoria Vikes on Friday, Sept. 11 (4 p.m. start) and the CIS No. 9-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, Sept. 12 (5 p.m.). Diabetes drugs substantially increase risk of bone fractures
Over 1000 Indian Islamic scholars issue world’s biggest fatwa against ISIS New Delhi, (ANI): For the first time ever, over 1000 (1050 to be exact), including muftis and imams of India, have issued a 15-volume fatwa against the leader, fighters and followers of the self-declared Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), also known as the Islamic State (IS). In a letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sent last month, these scholars described themselves as believers and followers of Islam, and strongly condemned the actions of the IS. They appealed to the international community to have a better understanding of what it means to be a Muslim and a follower of Islam, and not to abuse it by associating it with terrorist outfits like the IS or ISIS. They said that more than a thousand years before the so-called ISIS “Khilafat Rule”, Prophet Mohammad’s
Islam had ordained that followers must not kill children, women or the aged, nor should they cut trees, trouble priests or harm places of worship. Referring specifically to the ISIS reign of terror and horror, these Islamic scholars, through their fatwa, said the latter is guilty of committing heinous murders of innocent human beings, clicking images of their horrific misdeeds and showing them to the world through live videos and Internet posts, and at the same time, wrongly claiming these to be “Islamic Acts done lawfully as per the Sharia (Islamic Law). The over one thousand scholars emphatically stated that the IS or ISIS actions were “absolutely inhuman and added that Islam never permits such unlawful acts under any circumstances.” They said described the Khilafat Rule of IS or ISIS as “absolutely absurd and accursed” and their actions as not having
any relation with Islam or its teachings. They urged the UN Secretary General to uphold their fatwa as an example to the world, and denounce terror organisations like the IS or ISIS for the sake of global harmony and peace. Among the signatories to the fatwa, which has been forwarded to heads of state and government across the world, were the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, key representatives of the Ajmer Dargah, Nizamuddin Aulia dargah, the Raza Academy, the Ulema Council of India, the Jamiatul Ulema Maharashtra, the Moin Ashraf Sahab Kachocha Dargah, the Sayed Zahir Abbas Rizvi Zainabya, the Aamil Sahab Dawoodi Bohra, the Jamiat Ahle Hadees Mumbai, the All India Tanzeem Anmay-e-Masjid and the Darul Uloom Mohammadiya. The letter was sent by Dr. Abdur Rahman Anjaria, the president of the Islamic Defence Cyber Cell.
Washington D.C. (ANI): A new study has revealed that diabetes drug boosts bone fat and fracture risk and exercise can partially counterbalance the effect. First author Maya Styner said that these drugs weren’t first or second-line choices of treatment for type-2 diabetes but some patients do take them, adding that the doctors and patients need to better understand the relationship between diabetes, certain drugs and the often dramatic effect on bone health. According to the study, rosiglitazone affects bone fat by enhancing a critical transcription factor called PPAR - peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor - which regulates the expression of specific genes in the nuclei of cells. Essentially, rosiglitazone takes glucose out of blood to lower blood sugar and treat diabetes.
Adolescents more economically rational than young adults: Study Washington D.C (ANI): It’s time to start listening to your kids as a new study has revealed that adolescents between 10 to 16 years of age are more economically rational than young adults. The study suggested that parents should help children hone their costbenefit analysis skills in making real-life decisions. Author Scott Huettel of the Duke University said that new results pointed to the idea that people should not think of adolescents as being irrational. Huettel added that adolescents were more likely to use cost-benefit analysis than the adults use. In the study, the participants were presented with three scenarios: A, B and C.
They were asked to pick the best one. Each scenario contained a set of outcomes that could lead to winning or losing different sums of money. Young adults counted the number of wins and losses in each scenario and picked the one with the most wins, ignoring the dollar amount of each potential gain or loss. Adolescents, on the other hand, accounted for the magnitude of the potential win or loss and chose scenarios to minimise loss. Huettel said that pretty much everywhere they looked, adolescents were the ones who looked more economically rational. Adolescents consistently viewed almost all the possible outcomes of their choices throughout the experiment. The study found that young adults looked at almost everything initially, but as the experiment progressed they started to ignore information that wasn’t useful to them.

A humble beginning, then a star-forming powerhouse
Washington D.C, (ANI): A team of astronomers has helped explain how a lowly dwarf galaxy becomes a starforming powerhouse. The nearby dwarf galaxy poses an intriguing mystery of how it is able to form brilliant star clusters without the dusty, gas-rich environments found in larger galaxies. The answer, astronomers believe, lies in densely packed and previously unrecognized nuggets of starforming material sprinkled throughout
the galaxy. The team, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), has discovered an unexpected population of compact interstellar clouds hidden within the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy Wolf--Lundmark—Melotte (WLM). These clouds, which are nestled within a heavy blanket of interstellar material, help explain how dense star clusters are able to form in the tenuous environs of a galaxy thousands of times
smaller and far more diffuse than our own Milky Way. Lead author Monica Rubio said that for many reasons, dwarf irregular galaxies like WLM are poorly equipped to form star clusters and these galaxies are fluffy with very low densities. They also lack the heavy elements that contribute to star formation. Such galaxies should only form dispersed stars rather than concentrated clusters, but that is clearly not the case. By studying this galaxy with ALMA, the astronomers were able to locate, for the first time, compact regions that appear able to emulate the nurturing environments found in larger galaxies. These regions were discovered by pinpointing the almost imperceptible and highly localized millimeter wavelength light emitted by carbon monoxide (CO) molecules, which are typically associated with star-forming interstellar clouds. The study is to appear in the scientific journal Nature.
And the best country to live in if you’re over 60 is... Washington D.C, (ANI): Switzerland is the world’s best place to grow old, closely followed by Norway and Sweden, as per the latest Global AgeWatch Index from HelpAge International and the University of Southampton. The Global AgeWatch Index assesses the social and economic wellbeing of the older population in 96 countries around the world. The Index represents 91 per cent of the world's population aged 60 and over, amounting to some 901 million people. It measures the lives of older people in four key areas: income; health; education and employment
and the enabling environment. The report highlights that Switzerland (1) tops the Index, alongside Norway (2), Sweden (3), Germany (4) and Canada (5). The UK (10) is also among the top 10 this year, along with USA (9). Apart from Japan (8) all the top 10 countries are advanced countries in Western Europe and North America. Afghanistan (96) is ranked last. Researcher Asghar Zaidi, of the Centre for Research on Ageing at the University of Southampton, who led the development of the Index, working alongside HelpAge International, said that this Index is vital in representing the
lives of older people in countries around the world as it enables people to compare not just their pension income and health, but also the age friendly environments in which they live.

Mastering the art of taking workday breaks
Newyork, (ANI): Do your workday breaks boost energy, concentration and motivation? A new study has confirmed the better way to take ten. The study by two Baylor University researchers provides a greater understanding of workday breaks and offers suggestions on when, where and how to plan the most beneficial daily escapes from the J-O-B. The research also debunks some common break-time myths. Researchers Emily Hunter and Cindy Wu surveyed 95 employees (ages 22-67) over a five-day workweek, and each person was asked to document each break they took during that time. They chronicled and analyzed a total of 959 break surveys - an average of two breaks per person per day. They say the results of the study benefit both managers and employees. The first key finding is that the most beneficial time to take a workday break is mid-morning. Hunter and Wu found that rather than the typical culture of working hard all morning only to take a lunch-hour or mid-afternoon break, a respite earlier in the workday replenishes more resources - energy, concentration and motivation.

1965: Crushing the invasion of India (Part-I) By Prem Prakash New Delhi, Sept.9 (ANI): India’s First Prime Minister and one of her founding fathers Jawaharlal Nehru began the modernization of India’s armed forces following the humiliating defeat the country faced at the hands of the Chinese in 1962. The task was not easy as Nehru had ignored the modernisation of the Indian armed forces since Independence, believing firmly in his political theory that following the horrors of the Second World War, no nation should use war to solve national differences. That ideology lay in tatters when China attacked India’s borders and an ill equipped Indian Army was overwhelmed. The workload that Nehru had taken upon himself to rebuild the Armed Forces proved fatal. He passed away in May 1964. In the wake of the 1962 border war with China, it was now clear that India had two hostile neighbours – Pakistan and China. The United States had armed Pakistan to the teeth with modern weapons following the partition of India. Pakistan joined the US-led alliances against the Soviet Union. A defeat at the hands of the Chinese, the low morale of the Indian Armed forces and a Pakistan Army equipped with the latest American military hardware made a Pakistan offensive against India an attractive proposition for that country. Lal Bahadur Shastri succeeded Jawaharlal Nehru as India’s second Prime Minister. General Ayub Khan was the military ruler of Pakistan. He launched a second war between India and Pakistan. Pakistani leaders thought Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was a weak person. They were in for a shock! Towards the end of 1964, Pakistani patrols began to intrude into the Rann of Kutch, an area that had not seen any such
activity before. It was an area which was under the control of local police. Pakistani forces captured Kanjarkot in the Rann of Kutch which was prelude to a major offensive in April 24. Indian forces responded effectively against Pakistan in the Rann of Kutch In the barren straits of the Rann of Kutch, amidst mirages that popped up due to the searing heat, this author saw how the Indian Army pushed back the invaders. Having failed in its attempt to beat the Indians in what was perceived to be our soft under belly, Pakistan announced on May 3, 1965 that it was ready to settle the dispute. Great Britain interceded and India and Pakistan reached an agreement on June 30, 1965, stating that each side will withdraw its forces back to their original positions. Pakistan’s first misadventure after Nehru had failed. Pakistan’s real design was not Kutch, but Kashmir. The Pakistani leadership having failed in its surprise opening of a front in the Rann of Kutch now harked back to its age-old strategy of infiltration and shoot and scoot tactics in Kashmir. Pakistan launched “Operation Gibraltar early in August. It infiltrated a division- strong guerrilla force dressed as civilians and tribals into Kashmir. When I reached Srinagar to cover what was going on in the Kashmir Valley, I noticed that the infiltrators had almost reached Srinagar. My car came under fire from the airport to the hotel where I had booked my stay in the city. Pakistan’s expectation was that the civilian population of Kashmir would rise against India once the infiltrators landed there. That came to nought. The civilian population of Kashmir alerted the Indian Army about the movement of these infiltrators. The Indian Army attacked the infiltrators in intense encounters. Srinagar city was put under night curfew, yet the movement of people was allowed. Such was the confidence of the adminsitration. Each day, tens of bodies of infiltrators would arrive in the military

area. It was evident that the Pakistani gamble had failed. Fighting the infiltrators in civilian areas was not so simple. India had to make sure that the civil population was not hurt. And, it did succeed in that effort, thanks largely due to the absolute lack of sympathy that Kashmiri locals had for the Pakistani forces. I found that the people everywhere in Kashmir were hostile towards the infiltrators and any movement was quickly reported to the Indian security forces. Not taking into account the hositility that Kashmiris had for the infiltrators, Pakistan continued with insertion of more of its troops into the valley. With the infiltration continuing, India decided to choke the main route of infiltration. The army, with the blessings of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, decided to attack the Pakistan-held Haji Pir Pass. It was a brave and bold move, one of which the Indian Army is rightly proud of. The tip of the spear of the Indian offensive comprised of officers, made a speedy progress in dislodging the Pakistanis from the mountains and reached the pass. This author had the privilege of climbing to the top of the Haji Pir Pass with the Indian Army. Pakistan’s design on Kashmir lay in ruins. Once the Haji Pir Pass was captured, the Indian Army was now in a commanding position to stop inflitration and the earlier batch of Pakistani intruders in the valley could no longer get any support. This author was a witness to how bravely the Indian Army fought back desperate efforts by the Pakistan Army to retake the Haji Pir Pass. The strategy of the commanders, the bravery of the Indian troops and the support the army received by the civil population made an indelible mark on the media persons covering the operations. Pakistan now had to plan some other ploy to save face.. Unable to retake the Haji Pir Pass, it decided to open another front against India.

The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Prime Minister Announces Payroll Tax Cut For Canadian Workers And Businesses
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that a re-elected Conservative government will cut payroll taxes by over 20 percent in 2017 and protect Canadian jobs from the dangerous Employment Insurance and CPP tax hikes promised by both Justin Trudeau and Mulcair, as part of a discussion on the Conservative Party’s low-tax plan for jobs and growth with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. "By dramatically reducing payroll taxes, Canadian workers will see their take-home pay increase and businesses especially small businesses - will be able to create new jobs and invest in their current employees,” Prime Minister Harper said. “Our Conservative government has a proven record of reducing taxes on hardworking Canadians and job-creating businesses, and we have a plan to go further.” Thanks to the Harper Government, Canadian workers and businesses are enjoying the lowest federal tax burden in more than 50 years. As a result, Canadians' take-home pay is higher, businesses are able to invest in new products and personnel, and Canada's economy can grow and move forward despite global economic instability. Payroll taxes under Prime Minister Harper's leadership are low and 780,000 job-creating small businesses have been benefitting from the Small Business Job Credit, which has reduced their Employment Insurance payroll costs by 15% since January 1, 2015. Prime Minister Harper's plan would see the Employment Insurance premium rate
drop from $1.88 per $100 in 2016 to an estimated $1.49 per $100 in 2017, resulting in real, substantial savings for Canadians. "Approximately 16 million working
Canadians will see the benefits of this rate reduction on each and every paycheque,” Prime Minister Harper said. “Put simply, our plan will cut taxes on working Canadians and keep
them low.” Prime Minister Harper also reiterated that a re-elected Conservative government would not raise CPP payroll taxes. “CPP payroll tax increases would hurt middle-class Canadian families, leaving them with less money every month,” said Prime Minister Harper. “While the other parties are promising big CPP tax hikes, we have been clear that we will never raise payroll taxes.” "Justin's promise to hike payroll taxes across the country puts Canadian jobs at risk and shows that he is not ready to handle Canada's economy," Prime Minister Harper said. "Mulcair and the NDP have repeatedly pushed their plan to hike taxes and pile on debt, which will create economic chaos nationally and cost Canadian workers money and their jobs. Our low-tax plan is helping create jobs and move Canada’s economy forward.”
No new Gurdwara in home or abroad unless Akal Takht permits
Amritsar : Jathedar Akal Takht (highest Sikh temporal seat) Gyani Gurbachan Singh here today in a edict issued has asked the Sikh community living across the Globe not to construct fresh/new Gurdwara at home and abroad without obtaining permission from the Akal Takht. Jatehdar has also imposed ban on Ragi Balbir Singh for preaching and sing religious hymns unless allegations
against him for anti Sikh activities were cleared or decided at Akal Takht in the meeting of five Sikh high priests. Jathedar has also warned all the mobile phone companies not to name religious Shabad as Song on mobile ring tone as it hurts Sikh sentiments. Since Sikh religious hymns should not be named as song as it should be called Shabad. -Babushahi

Here’s why smoking doesn't always shorten life Washington,(ANI): A new study has shown that smoking doesn't always mean a shortened life span or cancer. Smoking has been shown to have drastic consequences for lifespan and disease progression, and it has been suggested that cigarette exposure may impact the risk of death and disease via its acceleration of the aging process. Not all smokers experience early mortality, however, and a small proportion manage to survive to extreme ages. Using long-lived smokers as their phenotype, the authors identified a network of SNPs (a DNA sequence variation occurring commonly within a population) that allow certain individuals to better withstand environmental damage (like smoking) and mitigate damage. Collectively, these SNPs were strongly associated with high
survival rates. Corresponding author Morgan E. Levine said that they identified a set of genetic markers that together seem to promote longevity and many of these markers are in pathways that were discovered to be important for aging and lifespan in animal models. Levine noted that there is evidence that these genes may facilitate lifespan extension by increasing cellular maintenance and repair. Therefore, even though some individuals are exposed to high levels of biological stressors, like those found in cigarette
smoke, their bodies may be better set up to cope with and repair the damage. These findings suggest that longevity, rather than being entirely determined by environmental factors, may be under the regulation of complex genetic networks which influence stress resistance and genomic stability.
Ellen DeGeneres calls ‘American Idol’ her worst decision ever Melbourne, (ANI): Being an American Idol judge is a dream to many Hollywood celebs, but for Ellen DeGeneres it was her biggest mistake. Claiming that judging the hit singing competition was the worst decision she has ever made, the 57-yearold comedian said, “As a fan of the shows, it doesn’t
matter that I sing or I know anything about pitch, reports News.com.au. ‘The Ellen Show’ star added that she thought that she will represent general audience in the show, but the fact that she had to break some contestant’s hearts with her decisions was something she never liked..

Working together with all levels of government necessary to secure Surrey’s future prosperity Surrey- Serving as a Member of Parliament taught me one important lesson above all else: collaboration between governments is the most effective way to bring progress to Canada and Surrey. When I served as the Official
Opposition Critic for Asia Pacific, I regularly reached out to municipal and provincial officials to talk about growth, sustainability and how it was possible to work together. A perfect example of why this approach is necessary can be found in
Surrey’s ongoing battle to secure funding for light rail transit (LRT). Every month, the City of Surrey welcomes in 1,000 new residents, and projections show that we will surpass Vancouver as BC’s largest city in the next 30 years.

We are growing quickly, and ensuring that we have long-term transit options and less congestion is critical to continue Surrey’s economic success. In 2013, the City of Surrey Sukh Dhaliwal requested a funding commitment under the Conservative government’s Building Canada Fund for LRT. In 2014, notice was received that Surrey’s request was shortlisted. So what is the delay you may be asking? Simply explained, there has been absolutely no further word from the Conservative government. They have completely ignored what has been described as Metro Vancouver’s number one infrastructure priority. Here is another example. The City of Surrey made a request for 100 new RCMP officers in 2014. This request was guaranteed to be filled within one year, according to the new contract signed with the RCMP in 2012. Yet here at the end of 2015, we have still not come close to receiving this amount of additional RCMP presence on our streets. The federal Minister of Public Safety came to Surrey 6 weeks ago and said that the new officers had been delivered, showing that he had never spoken to anyone at the City, and had no idea of what was happening on our streets. These are just a few examples of the kind of problems that happen when you have representatives that aren’t talking with their provincial and municipal counterparts. The Prime Minister continues to refuse to meet with the Premiers as a group, and hasn’t done so in over 6 years (a meeting that only happened due to the economic crisis of early 2009). This is the longest gap between first ministers’ meetings in 97 years. Municipal leaders from across the country and more specifically here in Metro Vancouver regularly complain about how Conservative MPs refuse to take meetings, and how the Cabinet and the Prime Minister never reach out to talk about regional priorities. Eva Mendes sparks engagement rumours
Actress Eva Mendes has added fuel to rumours of her getting engaged to actor boyfriend Ryan Gosling. The piece of jewellery she wore on her right hand was a giant emerald ring. She was first spotted wearing the bling on July 25 when promoting cosmetics giant Estee Lauder's new Dimensions Skincare line at a mall in Florida, reports aceshowbiz.com. The 41-year-old has been flashing the speculated engagement ring in photographs she shared on photosharing website Instagram. Neither Mendes nor Gosling has addressed the engagement rumours. The actress' representative also has not yet made any comment on the matter. Mendes and Gosling first met in the fall of 2011 on the set of their drama film "The Place Beyond the Pines". Despite their headline-making romance, the couple has been acting very private about their personal life. In September 2014, they welcomed their first child together, daughter Esmeralda Amada. Chris Martin caught up in love feud Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has been caught up in a love feud between his new rumoured girlfriend Annabelle Wallis and her former beau James Rousseau after photographs emerged of the new couple. "Annabelle and James were together for a long time and it hurt him to see the picture of Annabelle looking cosy with Chris," a source was quoted as saying by The Sun newspaper, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Shortly after the photographs emerged online, the model-turnedactor decided to take subtle revenge on his former girlfriend Wallis by posting a photograph of her, half asleep, sporting a double chin on his Twitter account. "Posting the horrible photograph of Annabelle was his way of lashing out. She then had to get him to remove it, which he did, but she was furious," the source said.
Martin and Wallis sparked romance rumours after the singer-songwriter was spotted with his arm around the actress as they "talked intimately" and gazed into each other's eyes in Brooklyn. The new relationship comes just
two months after the 38-year-old singer split from actress Jennifer Lawrence, 25, because the "Silver Linings Playbook" star was reportedly too busy with work. By Santa Banta News Network

Dear SOS Dear SOS: I was invited to a wedding of a son of a good friend of mine. When I received the wedding card, there was no mention of a reception party, so I thought there was no party. I was o.k. with that. I had planned to attend the wedding. But then few days before the wedding, I heard from another friend that in her card there was a reception party card. I was very surprised. My friend and I thought maybe the mother (our good friend) had forgotten to put my card in the envelope. Couple days later, I bumped into my friend (the mother of the groom) at the shopping centre; I casually mentioned to her my card did not include a reception party invitation , were they planning to have one? She told me they were having a reception party but I wasn’t invited as they had to cut the numbers of guests down but I can come to the wedding. Well, I was so shocked to hear that. I did not go to the wedding, as I didn’t feel my

appearance was important enough to them and neither did I give them a gift. I did send her a message that I will not be able to attend the wedding. The next time we got together, my friend said she has such good set of friends even the ones she did not invite to the party gave her son a gift. I thought she was targeting me for not giving her family a gift. Economically, it is a tough times for us and I don’t see why I was expected to give a gift for a wedding I didn’t attend. I keep wondering was I wrong? Am I alone in thinking this way? Confused in Surrey Dear Confused in Surrey: I am with you in this. I am a strong believer that one should only invite people they can handle. Either invited everyone to all function and don’t invite them to any. Your friend didn’t do that. She invited some to both wedding and reception and others to only the wedding. She was wrong. She also had an obligation to tell you upfront that she can only invite you to the wedding and even though there’s going to be a reception, she can’t afford to have you at the
reception. Then it will be up to you, if you want to attend the wedding or not. I feel she only invited you out of obligation, you weren’t considered close enough friend to be included in the reception party. Therefore you have no obligation to give a wedding gift unless you really want to. Your friend is wrong to expect gifts from those whom she choose leave out of the wedding reception.

After playing plain Jane and bandit, what next for Kangana? Kangana Ranaut is looking forward to Vishal Bhardwaj's 1940-set drama 'Rangoon' that will see her playing an actress, who is romantically involved with her mentor. Riding high on the success of her latest film "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", the National Award-winning actress will star alongside Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan in the movie. While Vishal got career-defining performances out of Shahid and Saif in "Kaminey", "Haider" and "Omkara", it remains to be seen how he uses Kangana's talent in the period drama. Kangana calls the movie a "passionate love story", which is set in a turbulent period of Indian history. "It is a film which is set in the 1940s during the World War II. It is about three characters and one of them is a superstar and her mentor, who she is romantically involved with. Another one is a soldier. It is about INA, independence and so many
other things. It is a very passionate love story," Kangana told PTI. Besides 'Rangoon', the 28-year-old actress will star in Ketan Mehta's "Rani Laxmibai" and Hansal Mehta's "Simran". She is also in talks for Tigmanshu Dhulia's biopic on late actress Meena Kumari but it is not yet confirmed,
Kangana said. The actress will be next seen opposite Imran Khan in Nikhil Advani's 'Katti Batti', which hits theatres on September 18. The actress said it is a very emotional drama about relationships that unfolds in a thriller-like manner.
"It is a larger-than-life love story. It is very intense and overwhelming but that is still being kept under wraps. I wanted them to cut a promo to show the intrigue and thriller-like element but they have not done it. It is a film about loss. But the promotions are about 'Katti Batti' and kissing and not kissing." Kangana said she was attached to the character of Payal that she plays in the movie. The character apparently has commitment issues. "Usually, I go to the edit and see the film many times but I saw this one in one go. Some people like to cry with a film, I don't. "I am very sensitive and if I cry, I will be in a sombre and melancholic sort of mood the whole day. It is very difficult, when you are attached to a tragedystricken part like this. The last half-anhour is very intense.". by Santa Banta News Network
A new begining for Jacqueline Fernandez? Jacqueline Fernandez is known for her rigorous fitness regimes and flawless complexion. Only two months back she started a new-age skin diet which is working wonders and she plans to pen down her tips to flawless skin in a book. The Sri Lankan beauty is a vegan and does not consume sugar. She says, ‘It's called a skin diet but it's not about getting skinny. This is about maintaining the PH levels in your skin through a balanced diet of acidic and alkaline food.’
Jacky is currently filming for Rohit Dhawan's Dishoom with Varun Dhawan and John Abraham; and Remo D'souza's: A Flying Jatt with Tiger Shroff. The shoots have kept her on her toes and reaffirmed the importance of remaining fit and healthy. She says, ‘All my co-stars are so fit and keep me on my toes. I'm doing a lot of action this year and need to be strong and immune to injury.’ Unbelievable as it may seem, Jacqueline also had problems related
to acne and pigmentation while growing up. The actress has dedicatedly followed various tips to maintain her flawless skin. Through this book, Jacqueline wishes to reveal the simple tips she follows like drinking a glass of lukewarm water with a spoonful of apple cider vinegar, cleansing and toning with specific creams and never sleeping with makeup on. ‘Phantom’ is a good one time watch, if you can overlook a few flaws Movie Review: While watching the latest cine endeavor of Kabir Khan don't know why a question crossed my head and that was... What will our Bollywooders do, if that age old rivalry between India and Pakistan will wither away? Well probably in that case one of the most sought after genre of Bollywood will become a thing of the past. But it's not our Bollywooders only, who foster such a fascination for a plots cultivated on the soil of two nation's rivalry. Even their western counterparts have it, but the only difference is that they portray it in a more creative manner, through some smartly knitted cine premises. Take the examples of ‘Rambo’ series, ‘MI Ghost Protocol` or ‘Munich’. ‘Munich’ deserves a special mention here because despite Phantom's being about something related to the unfortunate incident of 26/11, one can easily draw parallels between Phantom's premise and the one that ‘Munich’ had. Anyhow let's stop comparing ‘Phantom’ and ‘Munich’, and apprise you with 'Phantom'. Inspired from the Hussain Zaidi’s, ‘Mumbai Avenger’ this cine yarn of Kabir Khan is about a fearless and faceless agent, Daniyal Khan (Saif) who is sent to the neighboring country to eliminate all those who were behind the attacks of 26/11. Though Daniyal has a stigma of being a tainted soldier on his forehead, but in spite of that RAW authorities handpick him for the job. Soon after landing on the foreign soil, Daniyal is introduced to another exRAW agent, Nawaz (Katrina), who is entrusted with the job of helping him
identify the first of the lot. After attaining success in eliminating his first target in London, Daniyal heads to Chicago, where his next target is David Headley. With frames rolling ahead our ‘‘Phantom’’ travels through war-torn Syria to finally land in Pakistan, where his job is to assassinate the Lashkar's most dreaded man, Hariz Saeed. So does Daniyal succeeds in that? Or does he turns the plan upside down? To know you have to watch this action packed thriller of Kabir Khan. Well after witnessing Kabir’s last action thriller, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ and the recent one i.e. ‘Phantom’ there remain no doubts about the fact that Kabir not only has a fascination for action packed thrilling dramas, but he has a firm dexterity in painting them on the silver screen too. If we go by the plot of ‘Phantom’ then with some high octane actions sequences, numerous "on the edge of the seat moments" with a topping of Indo-
Pak rivalry, ‘Phantom’ certainly has a cine premises which can conveniently pull cine junkies to the multiplexes. Although Zaidi too deserves a share of praise, but it's Kabir's re-tailoring of the premise which give narration an extra edge. As far as screenplay of ‘Phantom’ is concerned, then first 30 minutes of the movie and latter part of the second half literally enthrall you with spellbinding flow of narration, where many nail-biting sequences literally give you an adrenaline rush. And the best part about this cine tale of Kabir is that, it never compromises on the core idea. At a few places you may feel that story is getting diluted because of some ‘sloth moments’, but they are very few in number. At last but not the least, the element that adds an impactful punch to the storyline of ‘Phantom’ is that feel of patriotism, and plight of common people on the both sides of the border. So on the
whole ‘Phantom’ has a convincing premise. And what further magnifies the impact of this espionage saga is its neatly painted screenplay, which is further ornamented by the edgy editing of Aarif Sheikh, Aditya Banerjee. If we go by the performances, Saif has once again looked suave while donning the shoes of a secret agent. Though Saif's last espionage endeavor ‘Agent Vinod’ could not fetch much admiration for him, but this time he thoroughly succeeds in proving his mettle. Despite having an experience in similar genre (remember ETT), Kat fails in raising the bar and we guess she could have secured a bit higher on the performance scale, but in spite of that she succeeds in leaving her mark. Zeeshan Ayyub continues his brilliance streak with ‘Phantom’ too. To sum up, with a balanced dose of cine condiments required to cook a gripping espionage saga, `Phantom` is a good one time watch. Be it high octane action, a feel of patriotism, or that nail-biting thrill, everything is adroitly blended in this Saif and Katrina starrer. As far as critic rating is concerned then I am going ahead with a good 2.5 stars for this desi 'Munich', based on S Hussain Zaidi’s, ‘Mumbai Avengers’. So watch it because despite having some mild flaws it showcases the concern which probably many of us are facing these days. -Santa Banta News Network

Making the case for dementia prevention (NC) An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is an old truism with special relevance for Alzheimer's disease, according to the director of strategy at the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance. "This will be distressing to some people, I know. But I don't think that a cure is a reasonable expectation," says Barry Greenberg. "I think a more achievable goal is prevention. Once someone has dementia there is already an advanced stage of brain degeneration." At that point, all doctors can do is
manage symptoms, points out Greenberg, who is also director of neuroscience drug discovery and development with Toronto's University Health Network. It takes an estimated 10 to 20 years for dementia to become obvious because the brain's redundant networks compensate for dying neurons. But if we can identify people in this pre-symptomatic phase, he says, we may be able to treat them with drugs and recommend lifestyle changes that delay or even stop the disease's progression.
"The irony if that's true is that there could already be drugs that have
How to know when aging parents need extra care (NC) The “sandwich generation is increasingly caring for both their children and their elderly parents -- and many say they do not feel totally confident about these responsibilities. How do we know, for example, if and when a parent needs help to remain in their own home, or whether they require professional supports or even long-term care? In Ontario, this type of help and answers are available. Registered nurses (RNs) working as care coordinators for the province's 14 Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) are there to assist in these situations. All Ontarians have access to the skills and care provided by this network of highly skilled registered nurses, nurse practitioners and other health-care providers. The range of expertise and abilities RNs possess is why some say that a registered nurse is an invaluable asset
A care coordinator assesses whether your aging loved one requires care supports.
in any health-care sector. Using their highly honed skills, RNs can help you determine the care needs of an aging parent or anyone who needs
help. A care coordinator will thoroughly assess their patient, measuring both their cognitive and physical condition, and then arrange for the services they need to remain the healthiest they can be. As the province puts health-care spending under the microscope, the skills of these RNs are more valuable than ever. Care coordinators tell us they don't just work with the elderly. They also provide end-of-life palliative care in the home, work with kids who have special mental health and physical needs, help us receive care at home so we can leave hospital earlier. This reduces costs on the health-care system while providing highquality care and services. Simply stated, these patient advocates are invaluable in any healthcare setting. Additional information about care coordinators is available at www.ona.org/RNs.
failed in the clinic that could have been preventative if they were administered in these pre-symptomatic stages. But we haven't been able to identify those individuals," he says. This is why Greenberg is enthusiastic about research into presymptomatic markers of risk. That includes genetic mutations, biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid and brain scans that reveal the sticky buildup thought to play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease. It also includes other biomarkers that, if validated, would provide more accessible, inexpensive and non-invasive measures of risk. Researchers – including those at several research centres in Canada – are testing an experimental drug to see if it can stave off cognitive decline in participants who have yet to show symptoms. "The ultimate goal is to prevent it before it ever becomes a clinical manifestation," says Greenberg. "And that's something which I think is far more reasonable in the foreseeable future than curing the disease once it's established." The Alzheimer Society Research Program funds researchers across Canada to improve quality of life for people living with dementia, for their caregivers and to find a cure. Consider a donation in support of this life-changing work by visiting www.alzheimer.ca.

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In bowl, combine fruit spread, dried cherries and flour. In another bowl, combine sliced almonds, breadcrumbs, ground almonds, cinnamon and brown sugar. 3. Lay one sheet of phyllo on baking sheet, keeping remaining phyllo sheets covered with a clean damp kitchen towel until ready to use. Brush phyllo with butter; sprinkle with onesixth of the almond mixture. Repeat phyllo, butter and nut mixture layers, reserving a little butter, until all phyllo and nut mixture is used up. 4. Using small offset spatula or the back of a spoon, spread cherry mixture evenly over top of phyllo layers, leaving a 1-inch (2.5 cm) border bare on all sides. Roll phyllo up lengthwise, jelly-roll style. Tuck ends underneath and brush seams with remaining butter. Place seam side down in the middle of prepared baking sheet. Using sharp knife, cut three equal slits across top of roll. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Let stand 15 minutes. Sprinkle with icing sugar and slice crosswise on the diagonal to serve. Advertise in

Let's keep learning about the right foods to eat (NC) Childhood hunger affects one in six Canadian children and according to a report by the Conference Board of Canada, food illiteracy is one of the leading causes. Without knowing how to interpret nutritional information or identify the foods that make up a healthy diet, families may struggle to provide the nutrients young children require. With a legacy of unhealthy eating, teenagers may also find themselves unequipped to make their own shopping decisions as they begin to move away from home. Changes, however, are underway. “Businesses, governments, and communities should help food-insecure people make the best possible food choices with their financial resources,” the study points out. “To that end, governments and industries should increase their efforts to educate everyone about healthy eating, and give them tools
to acquire fresh and healthy produce affordably.” The good news is those efforts are increasing on numerous fronts. Health
Canada and Public Health Agency of Canada programs like Eat Well, Be Active and Focus on the Facts continue to generate educational resources for
students and teach consumers about how to identify healthy products in the grocery store. Industries have been doing their part too. Recently Loblaw partnered with food nutrition programs through their Healthy Kids grants to provide both food literacy education and nutritious meals to children across Canada. ProAction's Cooking with Cops program, one of the beneficiaries, pairs police officers with atrisk youth for lessons in how to shop for and prepare healthy meals. “Many of the kids we work with come from low income homes. With limited resources and educational opportunities, these families have challenges affording and identifying healthy food choices,” says Jean Milligan, executive director, of ProAction Cops & Kids. “Thanks to funding from local grocery stores like Loblaw, we're able to position kids to make grocery shopping decisions that will benefit their entire family.”

(NC) It's back-to-school time and for most parents, this brings concerns about keeping their kids healthy. Did you know that in Ontario, a dedicated group of registered nurses (RNs) work in Public Health specifically to focus on ways to keep our kids and the community in the best of health? Public health nurses are part of a network of RNs who provide highly skilled services and care. With their special these training, RNs work to provide a wide range of services and education from their public health units, and this includes work with our children on issues specific to them. Public health nurses point out that there is a strong connection between health and many environmental factors, so they teach kids about the practice of good health habits. In addition to running immunization clinics, offering counseling and sexual health programs for teenagers, public health nurses have expertise when kids need help with speech, language, hearing or vision issues. Parents can access public health for assistance and counseling. Take a look, for example, at the Healthy Schools program which was initiated to ensure overall fitness, well-being and proper nutrition. By working with whole communities, public health nurses educate and counsel patients, monitor health trends and identify health factors specific to that location. They use their expertise to design and deliver health education campaigns and implement disease-prevention and screening activities to keep kids healthy.
