Punjabi Singer’s associate, Hardev Sahota gets six-year term for smuggling heroin into Canada Richmond men wanted for alleged role in Indian drug ring

BY JENNIFER SALTMAN, THE PROVINCE A Surrey man who tried to smuggle two kilograms of heroin into Canada in a secret compartment in a suitcase five years ago has been sentenced to six years in prison. In July, HardevSahota, 37, was convicted after a trial of importing heroin and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He was sentenced on Wednesday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. On April 22, 2010, Sahota was selected for secondary screening by a border security officer after he arrived at Vancouver International Airport on a flight from India. An X-ray examination of his suitcase revealed an irregularity. The suitcase had a false bottom in which border officers found two plastic bags containing two kilograms of heroin, valued at between $180,000 and $645,00, depending on whether it was sold by the

kilogram or the gram. Sahota denied any knowledge of the drugs, but five weeks after his arrest he suggested to police that the heroin had been placed in the suitcase by another man while Sahota was in India. According to evidence presented at trial, Sahota told police that he met K.S. Makhan, a famous Punjabi singer with a home in Delta, in 2006. Sahota alleged he later learned that Makhan was involved in importing narcotics from India and distributing narcotics in the Lower Mainland. Makhan has not been charged with any offences in B.C., according to online court records. Court heard that Sahota told police he was sent to the airport many times to pick up people who were bringing drugs into Canada for Makhan, and he had performed a number of other tasks for him. Sahota also alleged at trial that Makhan paid him for his work and gave him cash gifts.

By Kim Bolan Nine Canadians, including several Metro Vancouver men, are wanted for drug smuggling in India in a high-profile case linked to a former Punjabi cop and wrestling champion. This week, Interpol issued red notices — similar to international warrants — for the Canadians, including Ranjit “Dara” Aujla, a Richmond man and the former president of the B.C. Kabaddi Federation. Aujla told The Vancouver Sun Wednesday that he’ll go to India “to fight the case.” He said he’s innocent of the allegations, which have been swirling as rumours and occasional news reports since the 2013 arrest in Punjab of Jagdish Bhola, the former cop and wrestler. At the time, Indian police alleged Bhola was the kingpin of a billion-dollar network supplying heroin and methamphetamine to North America and Europe through Canadian contacts who smuggled drugs out of India. Aujla said Wednesday that he has never met Bhola, though once saw him wrestle when he was on a Canadian tour. Aujla said he thinks the charges against him are political since he has helped the Congress Party in his home village in Punjab — a state where Congress rival Akali Dal rules. He only learned of the Interpol warrant when a reporter called him this week. “I swear on my kids’ lives I am inno-

Cocaine-hauling trucker Ashvinder Singh arrested at Ambassador Bridge By Trevor Wilhelm Border officers at the Ambassador Bridge have arrested an alleged drug smuggling trucker after finding more than 24 kg of cocaine in his big rig. The Canada Border Services Agency said the commercial truck driver crossed the bridge into Windsor on Sept. 16. He was sent to secondary inspection. The CBSA said officers searched the man’s truck and found 24.3 kg of cocaine separated into 20 bricks. They seized the drugs, arrested the trucker and handed him over to the RCMP. Ashvinder Singh Kundi, from Guelph, is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and importation of a controlled substance. That border bust was one of two this month in southern Ontario.

CBSA officers at the Fort Erie Peace Bride arrested an Etobicoke resident on Sept. 12. She allegedly had 1.4 kg of cocaine hidden in hot chocolate cans. Kayon Joan Beckford is charged

Punjabi Singer’s associate, Hardev Sahota gets six-year term for smuggling heroin into Canada Continued from page 01 The court heard that Sahota told police he believed that Makhan was bringing at least eight to 10 kilograms of heroin or cocaine into Canada per month and that Makhan’s younger brother was involved. According to reasons for judgment from the trial, Justice Wendy Baker — who was also the sentencing judge — didn’t believe Sahota’s assertions at trial that he knew nothing about the drugs in his suitcase and accepted that he was an active participant in the scheme. Crown prosecutor Baljinder Girn had sought a six- to seven-year prison sentence for Sahota, citing the seriousness of the offences. She said Sahota was trying to make “a quick

buck” importing an extremely harmful drug, and was more than simply a courier. “Mr. Sahota has not shown any remorse or taken responsibility for his involvement in this offence,” Girn said. Defence lawyer Rajdeep Basra submitted that a three-year sentence would be more appropriate. Basra said that because Sahota is a landed immigrant — he was sponsored by his wife and arrived in Canada in 2001 — and not a Canadian citizen, it’s his understanding that Sahota will not be eligible for early release, and when he is granted statutory release after serving two-thirds of his sentence he will be deported to India.

Canadian $ hits 11year-low in its worst losing streak since 2013 The Canadian dollar is in the midst of its worst losing streak in more than two years as global economic growth looks set to derail the country’s plan for an export-led recovery. The currency plunged to an 11-year low after Norway, another large oil exporter, unexpectedly cut interest rates and said it may ease monetary policy even further. Signs that economic growth in China, the world’s biggest commodity consumer, is slowing down have sent prices for everything from oil to copper plunging and prompted speculation demand won’t be quick to recover.

Continued from page 01 Another Richmond resident listed on Interpol’s most wanted list is 60-yearold Parminder Singh Deo. Deo told The Sun Wednesday that he’s innocent and doesn’t know Bhola, who reportedly implicated the Canadians. Deo, who is retired, said he has hired a lawyer in Punjab to get more information about the case. He said he hasn’t been in India in four years and doesn’t know Aujla or the other Canadians charged. “I am very shocked from this news because in India, someone sitting in jail, he is telling all the stories,” Deo said. “I don’t know what’s going on. I have also written to the head of police in Chandigarh because I want to know what the charges are. I was not in India. I was in Canada.” He said his lawyer has a Sept. 28 court date to get more information. The Interpol warrant is also surprising because Deo said he has provided Indian officials of his addresses in Canada and in India, as well as his contact number.

“I am not hiding or anything,” he said. “They have all my records.” Deo said he has not been contacted by Canadian officials about any pending extradition hearing. Canadian Justice department media officer Andrew Gowing wouldn’t comment on whether extradition requests have been made. “Due to the confidential nature of state-to-state communications, the Government can neither confirm nor deny whether extradition requests have been received related to these individuals,” Gowing said. No one at the Indian consulate in Vancouver returned calls Wednesday about the case. Other Canadians wanted in the case are Daleh, 51, Sarabjit Singh Sandar, 51, Harbans Singh Sidhu, 57, Nirankar Singh Dhillon, 53, Gursewak Singh Dhillon, 44. Amarjit Singh, 59, and Pardip Singh, 38. Sandar also lives in Metro Vancouver. Details of where the others reside was not published on the Interpol list. kbolan@vancouversun.com

10 years jail for hiding restricted firearms in Surrey apartment It was April 2012 when police searched a Surrey apartment and found ammunition and 14 firearms – including pistols, rifles and an Uzi sub-machine gun – inside a living room ottoman. Dean Wiwchar and Phillip Juan Ley, who lived elsewhere but were the only occupants of the apartment, were both charged with numerous firearms offences. Ley pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of firearms and was sentenced. Wiwchar, 30, was convicted in June on nine counts and was sentenced earlier this week (Sept. 21) in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. The restricted firearms found in the Surrey apartment included: a Sig Sauer, Colt, Ruger and Norinco pistol and a .44 Magnum handgun. the prohibited firearms included: an H & K semiautomatic pistol, a .38 calibre pistol, an Uzi sub-machine gun, a Romanian rifle, and a Taurus pistol. Police also found two more firearms in his Vancouver apartment a month later. In the Sept. 21 sentencing decision, Justice Gregory Bowden called the

weapons offences "grave," ruling Wiwchar should spend 10 years in jail. "The fact that the Surrey apartment was a safe-house together with the suspicious activity of Mr. Wiwchar in coming to and going from that apartment strongly suggests an aura of criminality around the possession of the firearms at that location," said Bowden. "At his Vancouver residence, Mr. Wiwchar had a loaded restricted handgun readily available in his bedroom closet." Crown had recommended a 13- to 15-year sentence for the firearms convictions, while Wiwchar's lawyer suggested seven years was appropriate.

Wiwchar is currently in custody, accused in a 2012 murder in Ontario for which he's scheduled to be tried next year. The court documents indicate Wiwchar is originally from Ontario and has a lengthy criminal record that began when he was a youth. His past convictions include several of aggravated assault, robbery, assaulting peace officers, assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats. A five-and-a-half month period between January and June 2012 was the only stretch of freedom in his adult life, says the court papers, during which he committed the firearms offences. Wiwchar is already subject to a lifetime firearms prohibition in connection with an aggravated assault he committed while in custody. by Sheila Reynolds Surrey North Delta Leader

Man arrested in cabbie attack

SURREY: A man has been arrested in relation to an armed attack on a taxi driver four months ago. On June 21, at about 5:30 a.m., a cabbie said he picked up a fare at about 108 Avenue and 144 Street in North Surrey. The drove a few blocks when the passenger attacked the driver and stabbed him in the arm and hand with a knife. The attacker took the driver's wallet and cell phone. The driver got out and was assisted by passersby. Jessie Farrar, 22, from Surrey has now been arrested and charged with one count each of robbery, assault, and assault causing bodily harm. He was located and arrested out of province on a Canada wide warrant. by Kevin Diakiw Surrey North Delta Leader

Over 40 new RCMP members now on the ground-Dianne Watts

Surrey, BC–Dianne Watts, Conservative candidate for South SurreyWhite Rock, today issued the following statement highlighting the fact that over 40 of 100 RCMP members committed to Surrey are now on the ground. “Today’s announcement is welcome news for the safety of our families and communities,” said Dianne Watts. “This important milestone is further evidence that Stephen Harper is delivering results that ensure the streets of Surrey are safe.” The Conservative government announced in May that 100 additional RCMP members would be deployed to Surrey to help combat gang-related violence and crime, and has made it a priority to ensure that Surrey receives the RCMP members that it requested. This builds on the $3.5 million in funding over five years for the crime prevention project Surrey Gang Reduction Program.

Volkswagen CEO steps down over emissions scandal London, (ANI): Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has announced that he will be resigning in the wake of the scandal surrounding the emissions of its diesel cars. In a statement issued by the company from its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, Winterkorn said he was "shocked by the events of the past few days. Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group." According to media reports, a successor for Winterkorn will be decided a supervisory board meeting on September 25. Among the possible candidates for the job are Matthias Muller, Porsche AG chief executive and Rupert Stadler, Audi chairman and chief executive. The world's second-largest carmaker has been engulfed by an

emissions scandal which has wiped off nearly 26 billion Euros (USD 29 billion) off its market value this week. Nearly 11 million VW cars have been potentially affected, jobs are in jeopardy and even once-mighty companies can be permanently

damaged. The company is said to have been caught cheating on American air pollution tests. Volkswagen installed sophisticated software known as "defeat devices" in the electronic control module of diesel vehicles issued between 2008 and 2015. Winterkorn has become the public face of the scandal, with allegations that he ignored warning signs about the emissions in 2014. In stepping down on Wednesday, Winterkorn said "not aware of any wrongdoing on my part" but had accepted the "responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines and have therefore requested the Supervisory Board to agree on terminating my function as CEO of the Volkswagen Group." Mukesh Ambani remains India's richest person for ninth consecutive year Singapore, (ANI): Mukesh Ambani remains India’s richest person for the ninth consecutive year with a net worth of USD 18.9 billion, according to the latest Forbes India Rich List. While the combined net worth of India’s 100 richest remains largely unchanged at USD 345 billion, as compared to USD 346 billion a year ago, there are 12 new faces this year. While the Indian economy is expected to grow by seven percent this year, the stock market is off five percent from a year ago and the rupee has fallen nine percent. These declining barometers have

impacted the fortunes of several tycoons on this year’s list. Mukesh Ambani retains the top spot on the list, despite a drop of USD 4.7 billion in his net worth. Lower oil prices took a toll on his oil and petrochemicals giant, Reliance Industries, which saw its stock tumble on declining revenues. His younger brother Anil Ambani, who ranks No. 29 with a net worth of USD 2.9 billion, also took a hit. Falling shares of his group companies more than halved his fortune from a year ago. The combined wealth of the brothers is down by more than USD 8 billion.

Here’s how hypertensives can lower diabetes risk whilst asleep

Newyork, (ANI): As per a recent study, taking blood pressure drugs at bedtime can help you lower the risk of diabetes. New research shows that taking blood pressure medications at bedtime, rather than in the morning, reduces blood pressure (BP) whilst asleep and also halves the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The research, published in two separate papers, is by Ramon Hermida and colleagues from the University of Vigo, Spain. In the second paper, they investigated whether therapy with the entire daily dose of one or more hypertension (high blood pressure) medications at bedtime exerts greater reduction in the risk of new-onset diabetes than therapy with all medications upon awakening. The authors conclude that the before bed regimen of taking antihypertensive medications is as safe as taking them in the morning, and said that in hypertensive patients without diabetes, ingestion of the entire daily dose of one or more blood pressurelowering medications at bedtime compared with ingestion of all such medications upon awakening results in significantly improved sleeping blood pressure control and prevention of newonset diabetes.

Guest Editorial Editorial: Innocents abroad The rule of law is rare in many foreign countries Thousands of westerners go to live overseas for various reasons — missionary work, adventure, the lure of an exciting job, or just for the experience — and most of the time, their lives unfold uneventfully. What they must never lose sight of, however, is that they cannot expect the rule of law to prevail in some countries, as it does back home. The arrest of Kevin and Julia Garratt, who run a coffee shop in Dandong, China, along with a humanitarian aid group that ferried food and other supplies over the border into North Korea, appears to be a trumped-up case of retaliation by Chinese authorities against Canada. The Garratts, who have lived in China for 30 years, were arrested and charged with spying — a crime for which they could face life imprisonment or the death penalty — just a week after Ottawa blamed Chinese hackers for gaining access to computers at the National Research Council. It clearly looks like pure vengeance on the part of the Chinese, for as Robert Daly, head of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, noted, it would be hard to picture spies running a coffee shop on the main street of a city that is very tightly monitored because of its position alongside the North Korean border. Daly believes it’s possible that Chinese leaders singled out the Garratts “to demonstrate to the Chinese people that (China) is not cowed by the accusation that Chinese hackers attacked the Canadian National Research Council.” It’s a cautionary message for anyone who wants to live overseas in places where the familiar tenets of democracy back home are on very shaky ground. Complacency must never be allowed to prevail. Outrageous injustices can happen and innocent people can suddenly find themselves pawns in a political game not of their making. It appears a former Calgary teacher, Neil Bantleman, who has been jailed and not charged in Indonesia, has been accused of sexually assaulting young students at Jakarta International School in a ploy to shake down the school for money. And despite the best efforts of consular officials on all these Canadians’ behalf, truth, fairness and most of all, the freedoms and human rights that we so take for granted in Canada, still may not prevail in the end. Nor should Canadians fall into the trap of believing that if they mind their own business and avoid stirring the pot while living in a country where rule of law is an alien concept, they will be OK. They may not be all right, because if they find themselves scapegoated in some political chess match that has nothing to do with their own daily lives, they can’t really expect things to right themselves in the end. Let’s hope that Canadian officials are able to negotiate a quick end to the Garratts’ plight with Chinese officials and Bantleman’s in Indonesia — and let their cases serve as an object lesson to anyone who thinks heading overseas with perfectly innocent goals is enough to guarantee safe passage.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 11,000 people on the White House South Lawn today, the Pope invoked Martin Luther King Jr in speaking of the moral need to protect ‘our common home’. “I would like all men and women of goodwill in this great nation to support the efforts of the international community to protect the vulnerable in our world and to stimulate integral and inclusive models of development, so that our brothers and sisters everywhere may know the blessings of peace and

When combined with the existing $2,000 Pension Income Credit that is claimed by 4.6 million seniors already, this new measure will double the tax relief available to single seniors annually, beginning in January 2017. “We know that single and widowed seniors can face unique financial challenges,” Prime Minister Harper said. “This new Single Seniors Tax Credit is an affordable and targeted way to provide vulnerable seniors with added tax relief.” Seniors at all income levels are benefitting from the tax cuts and enhanced benefits introduced by the Harper Government: • Tax-Free Savings Accounts have provided 2.7 million seniors with a secure and flexible savings option that protects their money from being eroded by taxes. • Pension Income Splitting is providing significant tax relief to over 1 million senior couples. • Increases to GIS benefits are helping Canada’s most vulnerable seniors. • And increases to the Age Credit and the Pension Income Credit are

providing significant tax relief to eligible seniors.

As a result of these measures, about 400,000 seniors have been removed from

the tax rolls completely. “Canada’s seniors have saved and worked their entire lives,” said the Prime Minister. “Conservatives believe that seniors know best how to make financial decisions about their futures and their retirement. So we’re working to help them keep more of their own money, rather than creating expensive programs that will raise their taxes even higher.” Prime Minister Harper observed that the Liberal and NDP promises would lead to higher taxes and out-of-control spending. “Canadian seniors – many living on fixed incomes – can’t afford Justin Trudeau’s deficit plans or the NDP’s carbon taxes. Both will put at risk the retirement savings of millions of Canadian seniors.”

Mark Zuckerberg reveals Facebook is working on a Dislike button Washington D.C., (ANI): Facebook has revealed that it is planning to publicly test a Dislike button. According to the Verge, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook said during a public Q&A session that “People have asked about the 'Dislike' button for many years and today is a special day, because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it and are very close to shipping a test of it”. Zuckerberg also says that Facebook's goal is to implement the button in a way that makes it a tool

to ‘express empathy’, to Dislike a sad moment that a friend shared than a way to hurt someone. Zuckerberg further says that they do not want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people's posts. That does not seem like the kind of community that they want to create, the users do not want to go through the process of

sharing some moment that was important to them in their day and have someone down-vote it.

Hookah alert! Hubble-bubble smoking bubbling up Washington D.C, (ANI): As per a new study, hookah tobacco smoking seems to be increasing in both prevalence and frequency. The University of Pittsburgh Center for Research on Media, Technology, and Health (CRMTH) study revealed that nearly 1 in 5 recently surveyed high school seniors report having smoked tobacco from a hookah in the past year and more than a third of them reported smoking hookahs often enough to be considered regular users. The findings add to evidence that hookah use among adolescents is increasing in both prevalence and frequency, suggesting that it is important to add hookahs to tobacco surveillance and intervention efforts. Lead author Brian A. Primack said

that hookah smoking does not seem to be just a fad; it seems to be a practice that is increasing steadily over time nationwide and among hookah smokers, it's not just something they do once and that's it. He noted that a substantial and increasing proportion of people, particularly adolescents, seem to be smoking hookahs with enough regularity

to create a significant public health concern. Primack points out that despite indications that hookah use is increasing, the long-term surveillance efforts necessary to target interventions have not kept pace. While traditional cigarette smoking is decreasing, use of other forms of nicotine and tobacco is increasing, said Primaack, adding that if people want to counteract this potentially problematic trend, tobacco prevention and intervention efforts must also address hookah use and must continue to collect data specific to hookah use. The study is published online in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. (ANI)

10 Daddy time for Deepika

Regular smokers have a higher risk of losing teeth Washington D.C.: A new study has found that people who smoke regularly have a higher risk of losing their tooth. The study conducted by University of Birmingham explained that male smokers are up to 3.6 times more likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers, whereas female smokers were found to be 2.5 times more likely. Thomas Dietrich, the lead author professor, said that most teeth were lost because of caries i.e. tooth decay or chronic periodontitis i.e. gum disease, but smoking was a strong risk factor for periodontitis, that enables the higher rate of tooth loss in smokers.

Dear SOS Dear SOS: My younger sister died in a car accident last week. She was 25-yearsold and had recently gotten married few months ago. Being the youngest, she was the beloved child of our family and I know that her husband loves her a lot. It truly is a tragedy. She was such a nice, good hearted person a happy easy going person and always trying to help everyone out. Growing up my sister talked about donating her organs if something should happen to her. She was even registered as an organ donor. But upon her death, her husband and his family refused to donate her organs. My brother-in-law said he didn’t want her body parts cut into pieces and given to strangers. It was a tough time for everyone. My family tried very hard to convince him but he just refused. I am hurt and still very angry and feel my sister’s

wishes were not carried out. But I just know what to do about my anger. My mom and dad on the other hand said to drop the subject and they say it was his right. They feel that even though he’s wrong in his thinking there is nothing we could have done. But I say we have just as much right to make a decision about her as he does. Hurt and Angry in Surrey Dear Hurt and Angry in Surrey: Your parents are right, you need to drop the subject. You are only hurting yourself and your family. I understand you feel bad that your sister’s wishes weren’t carried out but it wasn’t up to you. After their marriage, her husband was the person who had the to authority to make decisions regarding your sister. As much as people don’t want to talk about subject like death, this is why it’s very important for people to let their loved ones know what their wishes are in case of a sudden death. As there was a change in her martial status your sister needed to convey her wishes to her new

emotional turmoil and it’s very hard to make decision in a situation like this. I am sure if there had been more time he would have listened to you and your family. For now just drop the subject. Dear SOS: Last week my husband went to help some relatives of his move as they had just bought a new house. A they were moving the stuff he saw few balls of red clothes hidden under the bed of the husband and under the bedding of other male members of the family. The wife of his relative quickly came to remove it before my husband could reach for it. She and her family is always going to one Baba or Pandit or another. My husband’s relative used to drink quite a bit and he would have fights with his wife but over the last year he had really changed. A number of times we had talked about how his personality had changed , and now we are wondering if some kind of black magic is behind that change. We don’t know what to do. Should we

confront her about it? Should we talk to her husband? or other members of the family? We are really are concerned about him and his family. Concerned in Surrey Dear Concerned in Surrey: There is not anything that you can do. What proof do you have that your husband’s wife has done black magic (Toona) on her husband or anyone else in that family? It will be your word against hers. Of course they will believe her over your husband. My advice would be to just keep quiet and stay away from people like her. If in the future you and your husband feel there is a risk to the lives of his relatives and if he or you can gather some proof then you guys should try to warn them. But be prepared to end your relationship as most probably they will not want to associate with you after everything blows over. It will all depend on how strong a hold she has over her family. Good Luck Send your questions for Dear SOS to Email: staff@apnaroots.com

Katrina Kaif: Ranbir Kapoor will bounce back

Ranbir Kapoor's recent films may have failed to do well at the box office but his rumoured girlfriend, actress Katrina Kaif says the "dedicated, passionate and focused" actor is sure to bounce back. Ranbir is going through a rough patch in his career as his last few films -"Besharam", "Roy" and "Bombay Velvet" failed to grab eyeballs. "His movies not doing well is a sad thing. But he gives his heart and soul for a film. I know it hurts and pains him deeply that maybe he is not able to live up to the expectations and satisfy his audience," Katrina told PTI. "He loves his audience... he wants people to love his films... he wants that acceptance from audience. So all this is hurtful to him," she said. The 32-year-old actress is hopeful that Ranbir will bounce back. "But as an actor, I haven't seen anyone more passionate and focused about his work. It is just a matter of time. Every actor goes through ups and downs. I am sure with his passion, dedication and God's blessing, things will change," she said. Talking about her recently-released film "Phantom", Katrina says she is happy with the audience's response. The actress is now excited for Nitya Mehra's film with Sidharth Malhotra, for which she has started shooting. The film titled "Baar Baar Dekho" is a love story, which happens over a period of time. "Nitya's film is an amazing love story. It is an idea that shocked me when I first heard it. I have not seen or heard a film like this in long time," she said.

"Most of the love stories are of

similar types, but this seemed new and

exciting. There is lot of performance in it," she said. Sidharth had earlier revealed that they would go for prosthetics look for the film. Talking about it, Katrina says, "It (use of prosthetics look) is there for a small portion in a film. Like in "Barfi" when they (Ranbir and Priyanka) are growing old and dying so you won't say it is a film using prosthetics." "It is used in a small portion in the film. There is a very small portion (growing old) that comes towards the end of the film," she said. Excel Entertainment and Dharma Production's are collaborating with Eros International for "Baar Baar Dekho" and it marks the directorial debut of Nitya. It will release in 2016. (NC) Keeping your children's play area both safe and fun can be a difficult balance to reach. Here are a few hints to achieve the perfect kid-friendly play space: 1. Once your little one starts to stand, he or she will likely try just about every piece of furniture for support, so check that each piece is sturdy and stable and won't tip over onto your child. You may want to attach the furniture to the wall. 2. Make sure there's enough storage space. Toys on the floor can be a hazard, so encourage your kids to clean up. Organize with ease using lots of low, open storage bins, baskets and shelves so there's little need to reach or climb. Just remember, the furniture should have smooth surfaces and rounded corners. If you use a toy chest, reinforce the hinges so the lid will stay open in any position, and won't slam shut on a little hand. Make sure the hinges can't pinch children, either. In addition, remove any locks and drill a few air holes just in case a child does get trapped inside. 3. When you get down to it, children love to play on the floor, so make sure it's easy to keep clean and soft enough when kids fall down. Non-slip rugs on top of resilient or wood flooring are a good option. 4. Stop shock risk. Use outlet plates and covers to keep plug sockets safe from probing fingers. Be sure the covers can't be easily removed and are too large to become choking hazards if they are pried off by toddlers. When replacing receptacles, get the tamper-resistant kind. 5. Childproof the windows. Use window stops that will let the window open no more than four inches and install window guards so children can't NEW fall out. Just be sure adults and older PRODUCT children can open them easily in case of fire. Never depend on screens to keep children safe.
