Alberta Hells Angels jailed in Greece for attack Dozens of Canadian Hells Angels took their death-head-emblazoned vests to Greece this month for an international biker parade and convention, but at least three of them didn’t return. A trio of full-patch Alberta Hells Angels are in jail in Greece after being arrested last week following the nearfatal beating of a Greek man. At least nine B.C. Hells Angels also attended the international meeting, in which more than 2,000 Hells Angels from 500 chapters descended on Athens. Some of the B.C. Hells Angels stopped along the way in Paris to do some sightseeing at Notre Dame Cathedral. The three Alberta Angels made a court appearance last Friday. The 41-yearold man they allegedly beat up is on life support. The Canadian government is providing consular services, spokesman Francois Lasalle confirmed, without identifying the people involved. “We are aware of reports of Canadian citizens detained in Greece. Canadian officials are in contact with the individuals and providing consular assistance as required,” Lasalle said in an email to The Vancouver Sun. “Due to the Privacy Act, further details on this case cannot be released.” Mike Tucker of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team said two of the Hells Angels arrested are from the Westridge chapter in Edmonton and one is

from the Nomads, which are based in Red Deer. Tucker said his agency is working with Greek officials. Ontario Provincial Police Det.-Staff Sgt. Len Isnor said it’s not known yet what charges the three Canadians may face. “All I know it was an assault. How that assault took place, I couldn’t tell you,” said Isnor, a leading Canadian expert on the Hells Angels. Isnor said he has been liaising with his European counterparts about the world gathering, an annual event, and the involvement of Canadian Hells Angels. “We speak back and forth. We knew everything that was going on,” he said. Isnor said he doesn’t have the final tally of Canadian bikers that attended. “Every chapter in Canada — and there are

31 chapters — has to send at least one representative and some send two because they don’t like to have one guy travelling alone,” Isnor said. There are nine B.C. chapters. The week before the meeting, two Hells Angels from the Mission chapter were photographed outside Notre Dame in Paris, admiring the cathedral’s stone angels. “They are there basically on vacation, but they do their business,” Isnor said. He said the “world run” happens once a year and includes a procession with bikers from around the world riding their Harleys through the street with their country’s logo on their backs. “It is in a different country every year,” said Isnor, who has attended world

runs in the past. “They also have what’s called their world meeting.” Only Hells Angels executive members from each country attend the meeting, Isnor explained. “World meetings are to resolve world motions. A lot of motions come forward that would change the constitution and the way they do business on the surface,” Isnor said. But don’t expect the world run to be held anywhere in Canada or the U.S. Isnor said Canadian immigration law “doesn’t allow any members of a criminal organization into Canada, so they can’t have a world run in Canada.” They can’t have a world run any longer in the United States also because they also created a law similar to what we have in Canada that won’t allow international members of the Hells Angels into the United States.” B.C. Hells Angels spokesman Ricky Ciarniello did not respond to a request for information about the biker arrests or the international meeting. The B.C. Hells Angels and the provincial government are locked in a long-running court battle over the ownership of three biker clubhouses. The B.C. Civil Forfeiture office says the clubhouses should be forfeited because the Angels are a criminal organization. The bikers are trying to get the B.C. Civil Forfeiture Act struck down as unconstitutional.

Vancouver patients get by with a little help from their friends VICTORIA - Patients in Vancouver facing life-threatening illnesses can lean on Friends for Life. The government is supporting the organization with $150,000, announced Health Minister Terry Lake. The Vancouver Friends for Life Society provides those living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, hepatitis C, cystic fibrosis, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) with alternative health and support services to help them and their loved ones cope with the diagnosis and ongoing condition. The funding will help the society renovate their Diamond Centre for Living facility. "We are pleased to provide the Vancouver Friends for Life Society with this funding, which will help them update and repair the Diamond Centre to make their clients feel even more comfortable in their surroundings," said Lake. "Supporting the great work this society does to help its clients, aligns

with our government's commitment to communitybased patient care built around multi-disciplinary teams that treat the whole patient, not just the disease." The facility has been a welcoming and therapeutic home to the society and its clients for 20 years. This funding will go toward updating appliances and Terry furniture, repairing or replacing flooring, and general repairs, which will help the centre to continue to provide support services to clients. "This funding will allow us to provide much-needed updates to our beloved house and will provide our clients with a more comfortable environment in which to build a path to wellness," said Vancouver Friends for Life Society board president Paula Parker. "From serving up v nutritious brunches and cooking classes, to

yoga and meditation, to massage and naturopathic services, all of our programs will feel the positive effects of a refreshed environment." The society provides clients with 50 complementary and alternative health services. These include individual support and Lake counselling, group and social support, nutrition programs and inhome support for individuals in the palliative stages of illness. "Friends for Life has helped me tremendously in a time of need, where I was falling apart emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. With the abundance of programs and wonderful staff at Friends for Life I got back on my feet again; where I can function and keep my little boat running.

Thank you very much." said Sylvain, a Vancouver Friends for Life Society client. The Ministry of Health has developed the Setting Priorities for the B.C. Health System, an overarching strategy to create a more sustainable health system. A large part of these priorities are focused on quality of life for patients. As part of this strategy, a series of policy papers, including ones on primary and community care services, were created to help build better supports that help meet the needs of patients, and keep them living independently in their communities near their support systems as much as possible.

Munching on 'nuts' can keep some types of cancer at bay Washington, (ANI): Love munching on nuts? You can happily keep doing so as a new study has found that nut consumption could reduce risk of some cancers. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota conducted a systematic review and metaanalysis of 36 observational studies (which included 30,708 patients) on the disease-preventive powers of nut consumption to create a comprehensive analysis. The authors concluded: “nut consumption was inversely associated with risk of colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, and pancreatic

Aligning with the known beneficial effect of nuts on heart diseases, their study may imply that individuals interested in making better food choices to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease can consider consuming nuts, after considering the caloric and fat contents of different types of nuts, added the researcher.

Parliamentary report warns cellphones, Wi-Fi a serious health issue VANCOUVER SUN Cellphones and Wi-Fi could be causing cancer, infertility and learning disabilities, but there is not enough evidence to suggest lowering levels, according to a new Parliamentary report. Yet, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health (HESA) report says the government must address this serious public health issue. The report, delivered Tuesday, made 12 recommendations, including that the government take measures to reduce children and infants’ exposure to wireless radiation. It also recommends Canadian doctors be taught to recognize the symptoms associated with using common wireless devices, and that parents be educated about the risks of wireless radiation. The signal used for wireless communication is RF electromagnetic radiation (EMR.) The electromagnetic spectrum spans from high energy Xrays and gamma rays at one end to lower energy radio waves and microwaves at the other, with visible light in between. While the expert panel concluded that there is not enough science-based evidence to recommend lowering the limits of RF radiation, it found that more efforts should be undertaken to reduce exposure in children under 14. The report also says the federal government should collaborate with health departments of the provinces and territories, examine existing cancer data collection methods to improve the collection of information relating to wireless device use and cancer. “This committee finally gave a voice to the scientists,” said Frank Clegg, CEO of Canadians for Safe Technology, in a

statement. “It reached across party lines to tell Canadians we deserve to be protected. Health Canada has to stop hiding behind the worst countries on this issue, and instead catch up with countries like France and Belgium where you can’t market a cellphone to children anymore, or expose children to Wi-Fi in a daycare.” During the hearing, experts noted that Canada is falling behind other countries in protecting children and infants, for example France, where Wi-Fi

has been banned in nurseries and daycare, and Tawain where children under the age of two are prohibited from using electronic devices. Belgium has banned the sale and marketing of cellphones to children. The committee also recommends that federal workplaces recognize employees who have developed electrohypersensitivity. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Resarch on Cancer (IARC) has classified RF exposure as a possible human carcinogen. Rob Tarzwell, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia supported this finding, and said there is limited evidence of a causal link between carcinogenicity and RF exposure, “meaning the quality of the evidence is limited.”

Bomb squad officer gets driving ban for West Vancouver crash METRO VANCOUVER — An RCMP bomb squad expert has been handed a conditional discharge and 12 months' probation after being found guilty of dangerous driving in a West Vancouver highway crash two years ago. Victor Joseph Cunha, a sergeant in the RCMP's explosives squad, was handed the sentence Monday by Judge Steven Merrick of the North Vancouver provincial court. The sentence means Cunha will not have a criminal record, although he will face a mandatory oneyear driving ban. The decision Monday followed a trial that focused on an accident that happened on Nov. 30, 2012, when an SUV driven by Cunha crashed into a highway median, lost a wheel and wound up wedged in a ditch. One witness, Brendan Grills, described Cunha's vehicle as "all over the road" when Cunha swerved past him at speeds of 100 kilometres an hour in the minutes leading up to the crash. Grills was also the first person on the scene after the crash. He found Cunha slumped over in the vehicle, apparently unconscious, and called 9-1-1. Grills described Cunha during the trial as "dead set" on driving away from the scene when he came to, recalling the engine revving and the SUV's wheels spinning in the ditch. A West Vancouver police officer who arrived on the scene shortly after described Cunha as emotionally distraught. Crown counsel Tim Morgan asked the judge to impose a $1,000 fine on Cunha, describing his driving that night as "aggressive." Defence lawyer Michael Klein said Cunha should receive a discharge. He said Cunha worked at a "high stress, high pressure job" and was at a "low point in his life" on the night of the crash, as his relationship with his wife was falling apart. "Events of this night are out of character for this man," he said. "This is a person who made a mistake in a very difficult situation." Klein added Cunha also had to pay for damage to his vehicle, which cost about $30,000. Cunha was originally charged with impaired driving but was found not guilty of that charge in March after Merrick ruled the prosecutor had not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Cunha was impaired by alcohol. Merrick noted that Grills did not smell alcohol when he arrived at the vehicle and being knocked unconscious could have caused some of Cunha's behaviour. VANCOUVER SUN

US to put woman on new $10 bill Nine dead as white gunman opens fire on black US church

Washington (AFP) - The US will put the image of a woman on an American banknote for the first time in over a century, breaking the lock that white male political heroes have on the greenback. The US Treasury announced Thursday that a yet-unchosen woman, likely "a champion for our inclusive democracy," will feature on the $10 note from 2020, replacing Alexander Hamilton, the first secretary of the treasury. Only twice before have women featured on US paper currency. Martha Washington, the wife of first president George Washington, was on $1 notes in the 1880s and 1890s. Pocahontas, a Native American woman linked to the colonial settlement at Jamestown, was featured in a group of people on banknotes in the 1860s. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said the woman on the new $10 bill will be chosen by the Treasury after fielding the

ideas of the public "about what qualities best represent democracy." Hinting at where the candidates will come from, Lew said the change will take place on the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage, when American women gained the right to vote. "America's currency is a way for our nation to make a statement about who we are and what we stand for. Our paper bills -- and the images of great American leaders and symbols they depict -- have long been a way for us to honor our past and express our values," said Lew. Current US banknotes all feature familiar male figures from the country's history. Washington on the $1, president Abraham Lincoln on the $5, Hamilton on the $10, president Andrew Jackson on the $20, president and Civil War commander Ulysses S. Grant on the $50, and inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin on the $100.

CHARLESTON: A white gunman killed nine people at a historic AfricanAmerican church in Charleston, South Carolina, the city's police chief said on Thursday, describing the attack as a "hate crime". The suspect, who police described as a 21-year-old white man wearing a sweatshirt, jeans and boots, was still at large hours after the shooting on Wednesday evening. Eight victims were found dead in the church, Chief Gregory Mullen told reporters at a media conference, and a ninth person died after being taken to a hospital. One other person was wounded and receiving treatment. Mullen said: "It is unfathomable that somebody in today's society would walk into a church when people are having a prayer meeting and take their lives." None of the victims were immediately identified. But the Reverend Al Sharpton, the New York-based civil rights leader, said in a Tweet that the Reverend Clementa Pinckney, the church's pastor and a member of the state Senate, was among the fatalities. The shooting occurred at the Emanuel AME Church in the historic centre of downtown Charleston around 9pm (0100 GMT), according to Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis. After the shooting, a bomb threat was reported near the church, Charleston County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eric Watson said, and people who were gathered in the area were told by police to move back. Chief Mullen told the press conference that the all-clear had been given after checks following the bomb threat. A police chaplain was present at the scene of the shooting, and a

helicopter with a searchlight hovered overhead as officers combed through the area. Several men stood in a circle in front of a hotel near the church. "We pray for the families, they've got a long road ahead of them," Reverend James Johnson, a local civil rights activist, said during the impromptu prayer service. Police took a man with a backpack and a camera into custody, but later said they were still searching for a suspect in the shooting. Following the attack on the church, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, canceled an appearance in Charleston that had been scheduled for Thursday morning. "Governor Bush's thoughts and prayers are with the individuals and families affected by this tragedy," his campaign team said in a statement. Local broadcaster WCSC reported the FBI was on the scene. The FBI could not be reached immediately for comment. The website for the church said it has one of the largest and oldest black congregations in the South. It has its roots in the early 19th century, and the current building was built in 1891. It is considered a historically significant building, according to the National Park Service. Times of India

Your dad, your hero

Two more rounds of gunplay in Surrey hospitalize four men

This weekend, people around the world will celebrate Father's Day, and dads across the country will be honored with cookouts, cards and ties they may or may not wind up wearing. Most men don’t want it to be a big fuss, but those humble daddies who want the honor the least are probably those who deserve it the most. The Book of Proverbs says that parents are the glory of their children. A father is his son’s first hero, and his daughter’s first love. Dad is a provider and a protector. He will screw together cribs, build forts and read the same worn children’s book over and over again. He picks up toys and cleans up messes, and tends to bumps and scrapes. If something is broken, he fixes it. He will drop his work to throw a ball around for awhile - then get back to what he was doing and finish the job. He was there when you took your first step, and when you started off to school. He is the one you ran to saying “Daddy!” when he got home from work. He is good-natured and always has a joke ready. He helps play pranks, even if it means being the object of them. When you tried to surprise him he was always surprised. You rarely saw him angry, and you tried hard to keep it that way. Dad helps with homework and admires the finger-paintings that somehow keep showing up. He cheers you on at sporting events and applauds at dance recitals. He takes you hiking, or fishing, or hunting, or to the big game. He gives a serious and studied eye to any guy who shows up to take his daughter on a date. He can take their measure in a second because he was once a young man, too. And in loving their mother, he shows his sons the respect that a woman is due. Whether you knew it or not, he was always worrying about you, always caring. He made decisions you never knew about that made your life better. He shielded you from knowledge of the evils of the world as long as he could. He helped give your childhood a hint of magic. He’s the guy you told yourself as a teen you would never be like, then later found yourself trying to live up to his example. You remember the times you ignored his advice and learned from the experience the hard way. He’s the guy who, the older you get, the more sense he makes. Dad eventually transforms into the doting grandfather, and when he holds your children you see the same gentle look in his eye that you first saw gazing back at you in your crib. When he has passed on, Dad is the guy you think about every day and hope he is still proud of the person you have become. And you know he is still right there with you, to help and inspire you whenever you need him. He is one of a kind, and he helped make you who you are today. You don’t just honor him on one day a year but with your whole life, which he did so much to mold. He’s your dad, your father, your papa, your old man, your daddy, your hero. The Washington Times

METRO VANCOUVER -- For two nights this weekend, gunplay in Surrey sent injured men to hospital. The most recent shooting was reported Saturday shortly after 10 p.m. in the 18600 block of Highway 10. Two homes were been hit by bullets, but no one inside was injured. Witnesses told police that shots had been fired between two vehicles: a lightcoloured SUV and a silver Pontiac Vibe. Mounties weren’t able to find anyone connected to the gunfire at the scene, but later two men had arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. The hospital was locked down for safety reasons. Both men remain in hospital, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police said they found and seized

the SUV involved in the gunfire. Two other men ended up in hospital Friday after a shooting in the 5700 block of 152 Street at about 10 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing a darkcoloured sedan leaving the area immediately after the drive-by shooting. Police said the men were found injured at the site of the shooting and were taken to hospital. A relative said one man’s head was grazed by a bullet; the other shot in the foot. Investigators believe the shootings were targeted, but were not able to say whether the incidents are connected to a recent spate of gunplay linked to a drug turf war in Surrey and Delta. Crown seeks prison for surrey party bus brawler who again failed to show in court NEW WESTMINSTER — A Surrey man who has failed to show up in court to answer for his role in a "bloody and senseless" party bus brawl in Cloverdale in 2012 will be sentenced nonetheless. A sentencing hearing was heard in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster Friday morning after Justice Murray Blok ruled that Emmanuel Dario had absconded. Dario was to be sentenced on March 5th but didn’t show up. The Surrey RCMP subsequently published a bulletin for information on his whereabouts but authorities still don’t know where Dario is. On Friday Crown Prosecutor Winston Sayson argued for a prison sentence of 18 months to two years less a day, plus lengthy probation, and defence lawyer Mani Sadhu argued for a suspended sentence on grounds his client was subjected to extensive provocation. Blok will reveal his verdict on June 19. A jury found Dario guilty last year of two counts of aggravated assault but not guilty of a third charge of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. The July 18, 2012 brawl erupted

between recent high school graduates and Dario, a motorist who crossed their path behind a Husky gas station at 176th Street and Highway 10. A charter bus carrying about 50 young people during an after-grad celebration made a pit stop at the Husky Station at about 11:30 p.m. that particular Wednesday night. Some young men, most of them 18

or 19 years old, were milling around in the back parking lot when a minivan drove up and all hell broke loose. The minivan's windows were smashed in. Grainger said someone loosed a cloud of bear spray after the driver got out of his vehicle. Roughly a dozen police cars arrived at the scene, as well as five ambulances and two fire trucks. Dario told the jury he had acted in self-defence after one of the party bus riders slashed his chest and others trashed his van. The jury heard he whacked three victims on the head with a two-by-four and threw a rock at a fourth person. Sayson argued that Dario had acted out of anger and vengeance, responding with disproportionate force on people who had nothing to do with the slashing or vandalism. The jury court heard from 23 witnesses for the Crown and two for the defence during the 11-day trial, from October 14 to 28. The jury deliberated for two days before revealing its verdict.

The sudoku puzzle is mostly a 9-by9 grid made up of 3-by-3 subgrids. Some cells already contain numbers, known as givens. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once. in each of three "directions". Or you can say there is only one rule. Every row, every column and every 3-by-3 subgrid should contain digits 1 to 9 only.

Slain Edmonton police officer Daniel Woodall remembered at funeral as man ‘who touched many lives’

EDMONTON – In a still and quiet hall on Wednesday, slain Edmonton police Const. Daniel Woodall was remembered as a valued friend and colleague “who touched many lives.” “We’ve come to be with each other and we’ve come to be with God. We’ve come and shared our tears together, our stories together and our grief together,” said Edmonton police chaplain Lawrence Peck. “He’s free of the fears we hold and he’s free of the sorrows and the tears that we carry … Though his passing has come too soon for us, Dan has reached his final resting place.” Police officers from across Canada and around the world marched through the streets of downtown and filled the Shaw Conference Centre to honour Woodall, 35, a husband and father of two, who was shot and killed while on the job last week. Sgt. Jason Harley was wounded in the shooting. The police officers were serving a warrant at a west Edmonton

home at the time.“We would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and thoughts at this very sad time,” said Woodall’s parents David and Denise Woodall in a statement. “Dan was the light of our lives and the people of Edmonton have taken to him like one of their own. Thank you all again, we love you all.” Residents lined the streets and stood on rooftops to watch the procession pass by. Many wiped tears from their eyes as they stood silently on the sidewalk. One of those was Mohamed Hussein and his mother, Aeibado, who watched quietly from the sidewalk. He said it was important for them to come and show they are members of the EPS family and the community in Edmonton, and to recognize Woodall. “We came to give respect to a fallen officer, fighting against hate,” he said. Hussein translated for his mother, who does not speak English. “She sends her condolences to the

fallen officer and his family, and wishes that he rests in peace,” he said. Woodall, 35, a husband and father of two, was shot dead and Sgt. Jason Harley was wounded June 8 while serving a warrant at a west Edmonton home. The killer, Norman Raddatz, took his own life. Woodall was previously a police officer in Manchester, England, and recently served in the hate crimes unit in Edmonton. Claire Woodall, his wife, thanked Edmontonians for their support over the last week. “There are really no words great enough to express my love and gratitude to the City of Edmonton. You have shown so much love and support to myself, my family, and all first responders. We will be forever grateful. I am lucky to call Edmonton my home. Thank you. From my family to yours,” Claire Woodall said in a statement. Robert Main and Corey Comstock were at the shooting scene as first

responders with Emergency Medical Services. “It’s a sad day,” Main said. “But on the other hand, it’s – I don’t know what the word would be. Today is going to be a good show of everybody coming together.” Comstock said they would have attended the funeral even if they hadn’t been at the scene “to show support for the family in uniform,” he said. Insp. Lindsay Atherton of the Greater Manchester Police participated in the procession, along with two other officers who worked with Woodall. She didn’t know him, but said his death has hit their whole community hard. “We were absolutely shocked and devastated. The community of Manchester is very sad,” she said. Joan McCarthy, who has a brother who is a Calgary police officer and another who is a paramedic in Edmonton, was moved to tears when asked what the day means to her. Edmonton Journal,

Here’s how taking vitamin D may help cure Crohn’s disease

Washington: Vitamin D has shown promise for treating Crohn’s disease in a pilot study. The research has suggested that supplementation with vitamin D may impact on the intestinal barrier dysfunction associated with Crohn’s disease and could have a role in the treatment of the condition.

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a lifelong chronic relapsing and remitting gastrointestinal condition, characterised by inflammation, which can involve any portion of the gastrointestinal tract. CD is associated with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue and in many cases, can result in a reduction of quality of life, time off work, hospitalizations and surgery. Researchers found, that patients treated with the supplementation were more likely to maintain their intestinal permeability, whereas this deteriorated in the placebo group. Increased intestinal permeability is considered a measure of gut leakiness, which is shown to predict and precede clinical relapse in CD. In addition, patients with the highest blood levels of vitamin D had signs of reduced inflammation (measured

by C-reactive protein and antimicrobial peptides), and these patients also reported better quality of life. The authors concluded that this is the first reporting of effects of vitamin D supplementation on intestinal permeability and antimicrobial peptide measures in a CD cohort. Whilst the data requires further confirmation, it broadly supports evidence from previous experimental studies that suggest a role for vitamin D in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity. Whilst the data is promising, the authors highlight that in order to understand its translation into treatment for CD, further larger randomised controlled trials will be required. The study is published in United European Gastroenterology journal. (ANI)

Prince’s ex wife Mayte Garcia reckons relationship with singer was most bizarre

London: American singer Prince’s former wife Mayte Garcia has admitted that her relationship with the singer was the most bizarre relationship ever. The American belly dancer said in a recent interview that her nine years love relationship with the 57-year-old pop-star, who wrote ‘The Most Beautiful Girl in the World’ song for her wife, screwed the dancers’ life as after that she wasn’t able to find lasting love, the Mirror reported. The 41-year-old choreographer, who became pregnant almost at once, but her son with the singer died a week after birth due to a rare disease, and then it was followed by a miscarriage, shared that she never went on date with the ‘Purple Rain’ singer as he used to get conscious of his 5ft 2 inch height with Garcia. The dancer, who was separate with the singer in 2000, concluded that there is no bad blood, and he was her husband and she will always love Prince as he’s a great guy. (ANI)

London: A family was devastated after a three-year-old boy killed himself while playing with his mother’s handgun. After finding the gun at his home near Cincinnati, the boy, identified as Marques Green, shot and fatally wounded himself in the chest, the BBC reported. In a 911 audiotape release by police in Ohio, the boy’s mother Elizabeth Green is heard screaming and saying that her son just shot himself and that she is not getting a pulse. She is heard noting that “The gun is mine. It is in the house, I carry it in my purse, I laid it down. We just got home.” A detective was seen leaving the home with a small black handgun, and placing it into an evidence bag. (ANI)

Dear SOS Dear SOS: I have been married for four years and I love my husband and our two children. The problem is my mother-in-law. When I first met her, I thought she was the best mother-in-law ever. We would go shopping and, to restaurants together. I used to love spending time together with her. She always said we were best friends and I believed her. After our marriage, she even made me a recipe book with all of my husband’s favourite foods. I could never duplicate her dishes and I wasn’t that good a cook so I thought that was the reason. After a year or so, I got the sense she wasn’t who she was portraying to be. I found out from some relatives and friends that she often makes negative remarks about me. When I am not around, she also tries to point out all the negative things about me to my husband. When I found out I called him on that but he says he’s not influenced by what she says, because he knows

Keep an eye on your impulse spending in the first week. The June 2 Full Moon could set you up to buy more than you intend. Before a purchase, strike up a conversation and give yourself more time to think about it. Life could get exciting after the June 16 New Moon, when other people's anxieties (Oct. 24 Nov. 21) (Oct. 24 - Nov. 21) might set off yours. Stay calm and collected, and maybe start a powerful and profitable relationship. Be bold but not reckless when the opportunity arises. The weekend of June 27 could be emotionally overloaded, so spend it with someone you know you already love.

what kind of person I am. Would you believe the recipes she gave me had also been altered. She left out some things from each recipe. When I called her on that, she said they are her son’s favourite foods and she wants him to know there is no one who can make them like his mom, not even me. She comes by often, and uninvited, then starts cleaning up our place. Or rather she takes over the place. And I hate that. Even with our kids she’s always criticizing I shouldn’t do this or that. I simply can’t stand her. We have had so many arguments because of her. I have asked my husband to move to another city or even to another province so we can get away from her. I am even starting to have nightmares about her. She is making my life hell. But my husband keeps telling me don’t let her bother me. He’s on my side and agrees what she is doing is wrong but he’s the only son and he doesn’t want to move out of the city, let alone the province. I just don’t

Dear Tormented by Mother-inlaw from Hell: She has shown you her true colors. And you know the level she can drop to. Still she is your mother-inlaw. Your husband’s mother. Before you seriously think of moving away to a different city, you and your husband need to sit down with her and have a straight forward talk. Show a united front. Clearly tell her all the things that she does which are bothering you. And tell her they must stop. Remember, the man you love and married is raised by her. She made him the man he is today. She can’t be all that bad. I am suspecting she is jealous of you. And the fear of losing her only son is making her behave like this. Let her know she will never lose him. She will always be his mother, one of the most important person in his life, but you all need some space to live your life as you want, without her interference. Also let her know if things don’t change you guys will have no choice but to move away and she will not be able to see her son and grandchildren as often as she wants to. Assure her that you don’t want her to go through that because you both love her and care about her. If she is smart she will back off and you guys will have the relationship you started with.

According to the grapevine, the respective families of the couple, have also given a green signal to DP and RS to take their relationship to the next level. The rumours suggest that Ranveer and Deepika would be officially exchanging rings in February 2016. However, Ranveer has recently been vocal about his desire to settle down and start a family. Apparently when the star was asked about marriage he stated, "I am going to turn 30 in July. I had a different take on marriage, family and relationships. But I have matured. single and marriage was redundant. But in past three years some experiences have changed my outlook." Not only this, Ranveer flew specially to Bangalore to attend Deepika's father's 60th birthday, due to which the star had to postpone his rehearsals for IIFA 2015. The insiders stated, that the Ram-Leela actors played perfect hosts during Mr Padukone's birthday celebrations. Ranveer had also made a few alterations in his IIFA 2015 rehearsal schedule, to be a part of DP's fathers birthday bash. He rehearsed prior to his Banglore trip and then flew straight to Malaysia for the award function post birthday celebrations. Well, we definitely see the spark between the couple and we hope the couple officially announce their engagement. Stay tune for more updates! Santa Banta News Network

Ajay is like an elder brother to me: Rohit Filmmaker Rohit Shetty, who has clocked close to 25 years of friendship with actor Ajay Devgn, says the latter is like family to him.Their is friendship one of the strongest in the Hindi film industry, and together, they have worked as an actor-director team in nine films, including the "Golmaal" series, "Singham" and "Bol Bachchan". Talking about their bond, Shetty told IANS: "I never realised when this friendship reached such a tremendous level. We kept on working with each other and today we are close to completing 25 years of friendship." "This continuous working together created a bond between the two of us and it developed into a relationship. It grew so much that Ajay is now like an elder brother and family to me. "Gradually, we started involving ourselves deeply in terms of content for the films that we were doing together and also as co-producers," he added. The common factor between the two has been that both their fathers were renowned action directors. And despite the fact that Shetty chose to make his colossal hit "Chennai Express" with Shah Rukh Khan, with whom he is also shooting "Dilwale", it hasn't affected his friendship with Ajay. "Dilwale" also stars Ajay's actress wife Kajol. Santa Banta News Network

How seniors can maintain independence and give loved ones peace of mind (NC) They're called the “sandwich generation” working adults who have taken on the role of caring for an aging or ill parent while still raising their own children and pursuing a career. Membership to this group is growing every year as the Canadian population ages. In fact, according to Statistics Canada, more than 2 million Canadians, mostly women between 35 and 44 years old, are “sandwiched” between caring for their young children and aging parents at the same time. This can sometimes mean their resources, both mental and physical, are

spread too thin which can also lead to worry and guilt when it comes time to leave the senior home alone. Part of the worry is for potential medical emergencies or falls that could occur since seniors are at a much greater risk of falling. According to Health Canada every year, one in three seniors will fall at least once and falls account for more than half of all injuries among Canadians 65 years and over. These were some of the concerns sandwich generation member Lisa Fazari of Richmond Hill, Ontario had as she looked for solutions to help care for her 83-year-old mother Ursula Calderon

while also caring for her teenage daughters. Fazari's mother's activity level had decreased dramatically since the Osteoarthritis in her legs caused her to slow down and be more cautious, yet she was adamant that giving up her independence of living alone wasn't an option. “My concern for my mom living on

Tip Sheet for the Busy Mom (NC) It's a well-known fact that mothers are the busiest people on the planet. They can do everything at the same time. Taking care of others, trying to balance work and family, being the personal chauffeur driving everyone everywhere, preparing every meal and lunch. How can moms stay energized when there's so much to do? How about rewarding yourself for handling the million little things you do every day? Here are some suggested indulgences for busy moms who need a little treat. • Make time for yourself: Take a break, a moment to yourself. Read a book, call a friend. Make this moment about you. Treat yourself to a healthy snack, soak in a bubble bath, go for a walk, enjoy a nap, meditate, take in a movie or just get your nails done. This will give you a boost of energy and

help clear your head—so you can be ready for the next round. • Plan an overnight getaway. A 24-hour trip away from home can make all the difference in the world. Bring a friend and enjoy a little gettogether without having to think about anyone else but yourself. Imagine a luxurious spa treatment, getting a mani or a pedi, or enjoying an evening of theatre … surrounded by adults. • Treat yourself once in a while: It doesn't have to be an expensive meal at the latest trendy restaurant. It can be part of your routine, such as treating yourself to a special coffee. Spice things up and try something different. Cappuccino? Mocaccino? Caramel Macchiato? Vanilla Latte? All of these can be found in the new Van Houtte Specialty Collection designed for Keurig K-Cup systems. Look them up on Keurig.ca, in grocery stores and

certain retailers. • Ask for help and support: No one says you should do it all by yourself. Ask grandparents to take the children for a sleep-over so you can enjoy a good night's slumber, plan a romantic evening with your husband, or hire a young neighbour to watch the children on a Saturday afternoon so you can make time for yourself.

her own was the fact that even though she's aging she's very determined to live independently, she loves to maintain her regular routine and do her own thing,” explained Fazari. “But the fact is, she can have an accident any time and I'm very concerned that nobody would reach her fast enough to help her out should she fall.” So Lisa looked into LifeCall, a personal medical alert device to help give her and her family the peace of mind they need to know her mother will be assisted if ever she experiences a medical emergency while home alone. LifeCall, a division of Reliance Protectron Security Services, can assist seniors or those who are physically or chronically ill. It can be worn as a bracelet or as a pendant. Coupled with the two-way voice communicator that is installed in Calderon's home, Fazari now has the assurance that comes with knowing her mother will receive emergency assistance in a timely manner if necessary and that she will be notified. “The key features that I love about LifeCall are the panic button and its ability to determine if she's fallen or not. It's the solution that we've been looking for- for a long time,” she added. The device features a built-in panic button as well as an optional intelligent pendant with fall detection. As an additional layer of protection, the fall detection option works by sensing a sudden vertical acceleration. A short delay following a fall allows the person to cancel the alarm if they can recover. If the fall alarm is not cancelled and help is needed, the individual is immediately connected with an operator in the monitoring centre.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West reportedly want to give their second baby a "traditional" name. The couple, who already have a 23-month-old daughter named North West together, are expecting their second child. Insiders have dismissed speculation that the new arrival will also have a directional moniker, such as South, East or Easton, reports femalefirst.co.uk. A source explained to TMZ that the couple opted for North because of a power element; that it is always on top or pointing up, and other points can't match that. Instead, the insider claims the 34-year-old reality star and her 37-year-old husband would prefer something more traditional, with a family-related influence, likely connected to Kim's late father Robert or Kanye's deceased mother Donda. Though the couple don't yet know the gender of their unborn child, which is due in December, it was recently claimed the `Keeping Up With the Kardashians` star and the `All Day` rapper are hoping for a little boy and are planning a blue nursery for the youngster.

How to protect your most valuable asset (NC) Did you know that the most common threat to our home while you are away on summer holidays is burglary? Typically burglary is a nonconfrontational crime but being victimized can leave a family feeling vulnerable and violated. Patrice De Luca, V.P. of Marketing and Customer Care for Reliance Protectron Security Services says the first step in burglary prevention is gaining an understanding of who commits these crimes and why. “The majority of home and apartment burglaries occur during the daytime when most people are away on holidays, at work or at school,” De Luca explained. “Burglaries also occur at night when there are obvious signs that

residents are away.” Most home burglars are young males looking for things that are small, expensive, and can easily be converted to cash. Items like cash, jewelry, guns, watches, laptop computers, and other small electronic devices are high on the list. Quick cash is needed for living expenses and drugs. Although home burglaries may seem random in occurrence, they actually involve a careful selection process. “This selection process is simple,” De Luca added. “They choose an unoccupied home with the easiest access, the greatest amount of cover, and with the best escape routes.”

What follows is a top 5 list of suggestions from Protectron to minimize your risk by making your home unattractive to potential burglars. 1. The first step, according to De Luca, is to “harden the target” or make your home more difficult to enter. “Remember burglars will simply bypass your home if it requires too much effort or requires more skill and tools than they possess,” he says. Most burglars enter via the front, back, or garage doors. Burglars know to look inside your car for keys and other valuables so keep it locked, even inside your garage. Use high quality Grade-1 or Grade-2 locks on exterior doors to resist twisting, prying, and lockpicking attempts. 2. When vacationing, leave a car in your driveway or arrange for a neighbor to keep a car there and move it around from time to time. 3. Have someone mow your lawn, rake leaves and pick up your mail while you're away. 4. Home security systems play a crucial role in a home security plan and are very effective, if used properly, especially when monitored 24-7 by ULClisted monitoring centres. De Luca cautions that home security systems need to be properly installed and maintained to be most effective. He recommends your home security system include a loud inside alarm, detectors at all exterior doors, and motion sensors in the master bedroom and main living areas. 5. For ultimate control and peace of mind while you're away, he recommends you look into the new fully interactive wireless security systems like Go!Control where you can arm and disarm your alarm, lock or unlock your front door, control lights and your home's thermostat at the touch of your smartphone. You could even have video monitoring and receive alerts to view the comings and goings of cleaning staff or house sitters. More information on home security is available at www.protectron.com.
