Recent purse snatching incidents prompt safety reminder Since December 9th, the Surrey RCMP has responded to five purse snatching incidents that have occurred in Surrey says Surrey RCMP. RCMP has noticed that the majority of these robberies have happened in public places such as parking lots and have targeted female victims. As a result, police are reminding people to be extra vigilant with their personal property and to be aware of their surroundings at all time. While an arrest was made following the report of one of these robberies in Newton on December 12th, the Surrey RCMP is actively investigating similar incidents by speaking with witnesses and canvassing for video surveillance footage. Four of these incidents have occurred in the Newton Town Centre area while the other occurred near the Central City shopping area. Suspects have been identified as Caucasian males wearing hoodies, however with the limited descriptions received, Surrey RCMP has not concluded if there are one or multiple suspects.
If you are walking alone:
We have increased our presence in the area with the support of enhanced foot patrols as well as increased patrols by the Bike Unit and members of the Crime Reduction and Neighbourhood Liaison Units, says Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet. We also rely on members from the public to report all suspicious people and activities to us right away by calling the Surrey RCMP or attending one of our
District Offices. Simple steps like trusting your instincts and being aware of your surroundings will help reduce the risk of being a potential victim, says Cpl. Paquet. We take this opportunity to remind residents throughout the City about basic safety steps such as not texting and walking, avoiding short cuts and walking with friends.”
New beds for Riverview Hospital The B.C. health minister announced a new program that will provide assistance for the recovery and rehabilitation of addicted mentally ill patients. The program, which will be run by Coast Mental Health, will add 40 new beds at Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam. The additional beds are part of a provincial strategy to offer targeted community support programs at
Riverview, a hospital specifically for mentally ill patients. “It is uncertain how the new program will make a difference,” says SFU health sciences professor Marina Morrow. “Hospitalization and medical care are often not effective and can even be damaging if they are not accompanied by strong, well-funded community and social supports that include stable affordable housing, income security, and
advocacy services. Such support must also be reinforced through environments of care that respect the human rights of people experiencing mental health and substance use problems.” Morrow researches the efficacy of mental health reform, service provision and access to health services.
Assault with a weapon in Guildford Surrey RCMP is investigating an assault with a weapon in the Guildford area of Surrey. At approximately 2:30pm this afternoon, Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing in the 16300 block of 88th Avenue. Upon attendance, a male victim was located with multiple stab wounds and taken to local area hospital. Reports of shots being heard have not been confirmed at this point. Officers are interviewing witnesses and canvassing the area for further information. Traffic in the area is being rerouted.

Christy Clark approves her latest big project — B.C.'s most expensive electricity-generating dam ever Brian Hutchinson National Post British Columbia premier Christy Clark is introduced before speaking at an Economic Club of Canada luncheon at the Hilton Toronto hotel on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014. Water, gravity and a proven record making hydroelectric power: British Columbians have these in spades, but building the largest, most expensive project ever electricity-generating proposed in this province requires something more. If it’s ever to be realized, the Site C Clean Energy Project needs an accurate accounting, myriad agreements and a sound rationale. Those pieces are still missing, so there’s reason to be wary of B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s announcement Tuesday that her government “has approved” the massive Site C undertaking. The idea was hatched nearly 60 years ago: adding a third dam and water reservoir to the successful Peace River hydroelectric network, in the province’s resource-rich northeastern region. In the late 1970s, after years of study, a location was finally selected. Site C is seven kilometres outside of what is today B.C.’s very own oil and gas boomtown, Fort St. John. The dam wasn’t built for a number of reasons. Chief among them, the province and its people didn’t need it;
there was enough hydroelectricity available from B.C. Hydro and Power Authority (BC Hydro), a provincial Crown corporation, and at reasonably low rates to consumers. But it’s smart to plan for the future, and demand for power will always increase. Site C was discussed, intermittently, for another 40 years. Along came Ms. Clark’s predecessor, Gordon Campbell. He pushed for smallerscale, privately financed hydro development until the last months of his final, scandal-shortened term as premier, when the Site C dream was revived. Ms. Clark dreams of big projects and
she speaks in big numbers. She is attracted to ephemeral schemes; these include a liquid natural gas development strategy, which her government sold to B.C. voters last year as a can’t-miss, longterm, economic cure-all. She promotes the Site C Clean Energy Project with similar gusto. The dam “will support our quality of life for decades to come and will enable investment and a growing economy,” the premier said Tuesday. It “will generate a century of low-cost power, providing enough electricity for about 450,000 home per year — an 8% increase in supply to BC Hydro’s system” once it is
Inaugural Ceremony of New Mayor of Surrey and Council Linda Hepner was sworn in as the Mayor of Surrey at the Inaugural Council meeting in Council Chambers at Surrey City Hall this evening in front of an audience of 400 people. “I am honoured to be given the opportunity and responsibility to be the next Mayor of this great city of ours,” says Mayor Linda Hepner. “I look forward in continuing the legacy of good work by our previous Mayor Dianne Watts. With a strong combination of experienced and newly elected councillors on my team, we are eager to get to work on behalf of all the people of Surrey.” Before taking public office, Mayor Hepner has had a 20 year history working at the City of Surrey which included a stint as the Manager of the City’s Economic Development Office. In 2005, she was elected to Council and served three terms as Councillor before winning the Mayor’s chair in last month’s civic election. At tonight’s Inaugural Council meeting, the following City of Surrey representatives were appointed to the Metro Vancouver Board of Directors:
• • •

operating in 2024, read an accompanying statement. It will cost $7.9-billion, according to a projection that BC Hydro made four years ago, and offered again earlier this year. Make that $8.5-billion, Ms. Clark told Bloomberg during a trip to New York earlier this month. No, make it $8.335-billion, her government announced Tuesday. And factor another $440-million as reserve, “to account for events outside of BC Hydro’s control that could occur over an eight-year construction period.” Total cost? $8.775-billion. Next month? Who knows. Slippery estimates on government projects are nothing new to British Columbians. They have seen them applied to ferries, convention centres, football stadium rooftops, the list goes on. But this dam undertaking is exceptionally large. More delays can add hundreds of million of dollars to the final cost. Site C requires land, enough for a reservoir some 83 kilometres long, and two to three kilometres wide, covering 9,300 total hectares. The province can’t expropriate holdings from private land owners without due process, which is certain to take time, and there is already pushback from individuals and groups such as the Peace Valley Landowners Association. BC Hydro has failed to make its case in terms of future energy demands A half-dozen court challenges are now in the works; angry ranchers won’t be ignored. Nor will First Nations. The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs rejected the government’s plans on Tuesday, calling Site C “an ill-advised and incredibly stupid decision. … BC Hydro has failed to make its case in terms of future energy demands and have not adequately outlined an economic business case for construction and repayment of the most expensive capital project in the history of B.C.” A joint federal-provincial review panel formed to examine the proposal raised similar concerns about Site C in a final report released earlier this year. “The panel concludes that the proponent [BC Hydro] has not fully demonstrated the need for the project on the timetable set forth,” the report reads. And this: “The panel concludes that the project would likely cause significant adverse cumulative effects on current use of lands and resources for traditional purposes.” First Nations will take that to the bank, and to the courts. Never mind, says Bill Bennett, the province’s minister of energy and mines. Expect to see shovels in the ground next summer, he declared. That would be almost miraculous, at the very least a monumental surprise.

Guest Editorial CIA gave in to terrorism The United States never misses a chance to denounce terrorism, and that’s understandable, given the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. But the criticism starts to look more than a little hypocritical when the country’s national spy agency commits its brand of twisted violence in response to that terrorism. The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee released on Tuesday its longawaited report into the Central Intelligence Agency’s program of coerced interrogations at secret, overseas prisons. The 6,700-page document — a sickening catalogue of human rights abuses — is an indictment not only of the CIA, but of the political overseers who tacitly approved of and covered for the agency‘s activities. The report details how ex-president George W. Bush, when briefed in detail for the first time about “enhanced” interrogations, expressed discomfort
Males assume dominant hold over Republican Committees in US House of Representatives New York: The House Republicans have reportedly recommended a list of 21 committee chairs, which includes 20 men and only one woman. According to Daily news, House Speaker John Boehner released his proposed leader list for the upcoming congressional session on Tuesday, without comment on the demographics of the suggested chairs. The nearly all-male team selection has triggered off another debate over the party's seeming reluctance to involve women in its affairs. Denying the party to be an allmen's club, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) said that as part of leadership, the party has a lot of women in its leadership team. He added that the new class and such a diverse group of members with great backgrounds was going to give the party a really strong boost in the new Congress. The report further said that of the

‘Insecure’ Badal responsible for attack on my convoy: Sidhu Former cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday blamed Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for the attack on his convoy in Jammu and Kashmir and claimed the latter was insecure about his (Sidhu’s) popularity. “My popularity in Punjab and J-K is making Badal Sahib insecure; he cannot say anything on Sidhu politically.......just go and ask Badal Sahib who is responsible for the drugs sale? Who is responsible for stalling the development in Amritsar? We have to stop dynasty politics. I openly invite Badal Sahib to come on any national channel for a discussion,” Sidhu told media persons here. “Sending 15 people will not end rallies, I have addressed more than 50
rallies...I can even lay down my life for my party.... When I used to campaign for Badal Sahib to make him win, then everything was fine. Now, the people of Punjab are demanding a change. He feels insecure when I utter one line,” he said. Earlier in the day, unknown assailants attacked Sidhu’s convoy, pelting the cars with stones. In the melee, the windscreens of some cars were damaged. On Wednesday, Sidhu had reportedly appealed to the people of Jammu to ‘disband’ the Congress, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC) from the state, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had envisaged a vision for the state in which Jammu and Kashmir would compare favourably with Gujarat.

Consider enlisting the help of a third party, such as a (May 21-June 21) financial adviser or accountant, to help (May 21-June 21) mediate the situation and offer a logical plan. If you're going to be in this relationship, you'll need to figure out how to do so materially as well as emotionally. Your relationship has great potential for improvement and harmony, however, it may appear as if you've taken two giant steps backward this week. Try your best not to engage in any power struggle with your ( June 22-July 22) mate this week, especially if it involves your professional goals or a situation with one of your parents. Remember that the two of you are an amazing source of strength when you work together. Choose to remain on the same side.
Dear SOS
If someone in your family doesn't approve of your sweetheart, he or she will surely voice their opinion this week. You won't appreciate how blunt their remarks come across, and it's likely you'll rush to defend (Sept. 23 -Oct. 23) your partner -- even if there's a morsel of (Sept. 23 -Oct. 23) truth behind what your relative is saying. Alternatively, it could be your mate that is badmouthing someone in your clan. Either way, you'll feel caught in the middle. Not fun. _____________ You'll have a definite bite to your words this
week, and it appears they're aiming straight toward your sweetheart. You might not mince words when it comes to sharing how you really feel about a financial problem or other wrinkle in your otherwise perfect relationship. This appears to be a practical concern -- one that you want to handle (Oct. 24 - Nov. 21) together pragmatically. Unfortunately, you (Oct 24 Nov 21 also want to be the one in charge of the situation. Remember, you can't have it both ways. Choose your words carefully.

The worst thing you can do this week is keep your feelings to yourself. If you're experiencing a rough patch with your mate, this will be the week to get everything out in the open and, hopefully, clear the air. You might consider couple's counseling if there's a (Jan. 20 -Feb. 19) situation you're not sure the two of you can (Jan. 20 -Feb. manage on your own. Either way, it's time to open up a dialogue and stop trying to sweep things under the rug.

If this is the case, you might need to re-evaluate how important this friendship really is. Of course, there's also the potential that your pal is actually right. Sometimes, the truth hurts.

Make it your New Year's Resolution to End the clutter in your home It doesn't matter if you live in a fivestorey home, or in a studio apartment, chances are you have a problem with clutter. A recent survey conducted for Professional Organizers in Canada revealed that nearly three out of four of us feel disorganized. There's no better time than the new year to take stock of what you need and what needs to go.
tossing on the counter too. Pick a shelf. Now that you’ve done a counter, try a shelf. It doesn’t matter what shelf. Could be a shelf in a closet, or on a bookshelf. Don’t tackle the whole bookshelf — just one shelf. Clear all non-essential things and leave it looking neat and clutter-free.
18 Five-Minute Decluttering Tips to Start Conquering Your Mess. “Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” - Albert Einstein I’ve written a lot about simplicity and decluttering (I can’t help it — I’m passionate about it!) and I’ve noticed that a lot of readers share my ideal of having an uncluttered home or workplace, but don’t know where to start. When your home is filled with clutter, trying to tackle a mountain of stuff can be quite overwhelming. So here’s my advice: Start with just five minutes. Baby steps are important. Sure, five minutes won’t barely make a dent in your mountain, but it’s a start. Celebrate when you’ve made that start! Then take another five minutes tomorrow. And another the next day. Before you know it, you’ll have cleared a whole closet or a room and then half your house and then … who knows? Maybe before long your house will be even more uncluttered than mine.
We’ll have a challenge! For those who are overwhelmed by their clutter, here are some great ways to get started, five minutes at a time. Designate a spot for incoming papers. Papers often account for a lot of our clutter. This is because we put them in different spots — on the counter, on the table, on our desk, in a drawer, on top of our dresser, in our car. No wonder we can’t find anything! Designate an in-box tray or spot in your home (or at your office, for that matter) and don’t put down papers anywhere but that spot. Got mail? Put it in the inbox. Got school papers? Put it in the inbox. Receipts, warranties, manuals, notices, flyers? In the inbox! This one little change can really transform your paperwork. Start clearing a starting zone. What you want to do is clear one area. This is your no-clutter zone. It can be a counter, or your kitchen table, or the
three-foot perimeter around your couch. Wherever you start, make a rule: nothing can be placed there that’s not actually in use. Everything must be put away. Once you have that clutter-free zone, keep it that way! Now, each day, slowly expand your no-clutter zone until it envelopes the whole house! Unfortunately, the neighbors don’t seem to like it when you try to expand the no-clutter zone to their house, and start hauling away their unused exercise equipment and torn underwear when they’re not at home. Some people don’t appreciate simplicity, I guess. Clear off a counter. You want to get your house so that all flat spaces are clear of clutter. Maybe they have a toaster on them, maybe a decorative candle, but not a lot of clutter. So start with one counter. Clear off everything possible, except maybe one or two essential things. Have a blender you haven’t used since jazzercise was all the rage? Put it in the cupboard! Clear off all papers and all the other junk you’ve been

Schedule a decluttering weekend. Maybe you don’t feel like doing a huge decluttering session right now. But if you take the time to schedule it for later this month, you can clear your schedule, and if you have a family, get them involved too. The more hands pitching in, the better. Get boxes and trash bags ready, and plan a trip to a charity to drop off donated items. You might not get the entire house decluttered during the weekend, but you’ll probably make great progress. Pick up 5 things, and find places for them. These should be things that you actually use, but that you just seem to put anywhere, because they don’t have good places. If you don’t know exactly where things belong, you have to designate a good spot. Take a minute to think it through — where would be a good spot? Then always put those things in those spots when you’re done using them. Do this for everything in your home, a few things at a time. Spend a few minutes visualizing the room. When I’m decluttering, I like to take a moment to take a look at a room, and think about how I want it to look. What are the most essential pieces of furniture? What doesn’t belong in the room but has just gravitated there? What is on the floor (hint: only furniture and rugs belong there) and what is on the other flat surfaces? Once I’ve visualized how the room will look uncluttered, and figured out what is essential, I get rid of the rest. Create a “maybe” box. Sometimes when you’re going through a pile of stuff, you know exactly what to keep (the stuff you love and use) and what to trash or donate. But then there’s the stuff you don’t use, but think you might want it or need it someday. You can’t bear to get rid of that stuff! So create a “maybe” box, and put this stuff there. Then store the box somewhere hidden, out of the way. Put a note on your calendar six months from now to look in the box. Then pull it out, six months later, and see if it’s anything you really needed. Usually, you can just dump the whole box, because you never needed that stuff. Continued on page 14

Make it your New Year's Resolution to End the clutter in your home the person or people we live with. An uncluttered home is the result of a shared philosophy of simplicity of all the people living in the house. If you take a few minutes to explain that you really want to have an uncluttered house, and that you could use their help, you can go a long way to getting to that point. Try to be persuasive and encouraging rather than nagging and negative. “We don’t need to increase our goods nearly as much as we need to scale down our wants. Not wanting something is as good as possessing it.” - Donald Horban This article was originally published at ZenHabits.
Continued from page 13 Put a load in your car for charity. If you’ve decluttered a bunch of stuff, you might have a “to donate” pile that’s just taking up space in a corner of your room. Take a few minutes to box it up and put it in your trunk. Then tomorrow, drop it off. Create a 30-day list. The problem with decluttering is that we can declutter our butts off (don’t actually try that — it’s painful) but it just comes back because we buy more stuff. So fight that tendency by nipping it in the bud: don’t buy the stuff in the first place. Take a minute to create a 30-day list, and every time you want to buy something that’s not absolutely necessary (and no, that new Macbook Air isn’t absolutely necessary), put it on the list with the date it was added to the list. Make a rule never to buy anything (except necessities) unless they’ve been on the list for 30 days. Often you’ll lose the urge to buy the stuff and you’ll save yourself a lot of money and clutter. Teach your kids where things belong. This only applies to the parents among us, of course, but if you teach your kids where things go, and start teaching them the habit of putting them there, you’ll go a long way to keeping your house uncluttered. Of course, they won’t learn the habit overnight, so you’ll have to be very very patient with them and just keep teaching them until they’ve got it. And better yet, set the example for them and get into the habit yourself. Set up some simple folders. Sometimes our papers pile up high because we don’t have good places to put them. Create some simple folders with labels for your major bills and similar paperwork. Put them in one spot. Your system doesn’t have to be complete, but keep some extra folders and labels in
case you need to quickly create a new file. Learn to file quickly. Once you’ve created your simple filing system, you just need to learn to use it regularly. Take a handful of papers from your pile, or your inbox, and go through them one at a time, starting from the top paper and working down. Make quick decisions: trash them, file them immediately, or make a note of the action required and put them in an “action” file. Don’t put anything back on the pile, and don’t put them anywhere but in a folder (and no cheating “to be filed” folders!) or in the trash/recycling bin. Pull out some clothes you don’t wear. As you’re getting ready for work, and going through your closet for something to wear, spend a few minutes pulling out ones you haven’t worn in a few months. If they’re seasonal clothes, store them in a box. Get rid of the rest. Do this a little at a time until your closet (and then your drawers) only contains stuff you actually wear. Clear out your medicine cabinet. If you don’t have one spot for medicines, create one now. Go through

4. If you’re stuck for an idea, open a dictionary, randomly select a word and then try to formulate ideas incorporating this word. You’d be surprised how well this works. The concept is based on a simple but little known truth: freedom inhibits creativity. There are nothing like restrictions to get you thinking. 5. Define your problem. Grab a sheet of paper, electronic notebook, computer or whatever you use to make notes, and define your problem in detail. You’ll probably find ideas positively spewing out once you’ve done this. 6. If you can’t think, go for a walk. A change of atmosphere is good for you and gentle exercise helps shake up the brain cells. 7. Don’t watch TV. Experiments performed by the JPB Creative Laboratory show that watching TV causes your brain to slowly trickle out your ears and/or nose. It’s not pretty, but it happens. 8. Don’t do drugs. People on drugs think they are creative. To everyone else, they seem like people on drugs. 9. Read as much as you can about everything possible. Books exercise your brain, provide inspiration and fill you with information that allows you to make creative connections easily. 10. Exercise your brain. Brains, like bodies, need exercise to keep fit. If you don’t exercise your brain, it will get flabby and useless. Exercise your brain by reading a lot (see above), talking to clever people and disagreeing with peoplearguing can be a terrific way to give your brain cells a workout. But note, arguing about politics or film directors is good for you; bickering over who should clean the dishes is not.

Natural health trends for 2015
(NC) A new year brings new beginnings, a time when many of us make resolutions to be healthier. To help you get there, the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) surveyed industry experts to identify the top five natural health trends for this year:
Priyanka Chopra to debut on TV with ABC
1. Pumpkin: Primed to be the kale of 2015, we are going to see an increase in the use of pumpkin across the country. From oils to seeds, this unique squash has many health benefits and has been linked to heightened prostate and urinary tract health. Pumpkin seeds are also rich in B vitamins, vitamin E, zinc and essential fatty acids. 2. The Gut: Digestive health is poised to reign supreme amongst natural health trends in 2015. Increasingly, natural health products that support digestion, including a diversifying probiotic category, are being linked to benefits beyond digestive health, such as mental health, skin health, and weight maintenance, among others. 3. Fermentation: The trend of supporting digestion also extends to fermented foods, which are no longer limited to kimchi, tempeh and sauerkraut. Fermentation can liberate nutrients in foods which helps our body better absorb them. For 2015, natural health lovers are taking fermentation outside of the mason jar. Canadians will see a plethora of new fermented foods in different forms including bars and powders popping up in stores across the
country. 4. GMO labeling: In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. Food labeling activism is on the rise in Canada. We are seeing an increase in consumers demanding to know where their food comes from and whether it has been genetically modified. 5. Fancy Fats: In 2014 coconut oil was all the rage, and while it has many health benefits, we are seeing more and more people using new oils, each offering
their own unique health advantages. Some of those that will be trending this year include:• Avocado Oil - Rich in monounsaturated fats and vitamin E and with a high smoke point which makes it better for use in cooking than olive oil. • Camelina Oil - Rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fats with a high proportion of omega-3s for cardiovascular health.• Flax Seed Oil - Rich in alpha-linolenic omega-3 fats. Priyanka Chopra is all set to make her TV debut but before you let your imagination run wild, it is not for the Indian TV. According to a report in DNA, the actress has inked a deal with American Studio, ABC. Priyanka first met Keli Lee, the Vice President of Casting at ABC, at the SAMMA (South Asians In Media, Marketing & Entertainment Summit) conference and later stayed in touch through their agents. The two were headline speakers at the summit. Lee is a big name in the West for scouting talent and casting female leads in strong roles in shows like Scandal and Grey's Anatomy. Priyanka will be travelling to Los Angeles and staying there extensively for a few months to start her work on the project.
