New funding to support clean air in B.C. Angelina Jolie may quit acting post playing ‘Cleopatra’

An online resource and networking program, HASTe helps students, teachers, schools and communities take action to reduce school transportation emissions for the coming year.

Angelina Jolie admitted that though she was working on a Cleopatra biopic, the project may be her last venture as an actress. In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, the 38-year-old actress said that there were numerous ideas for the film and though it was complicated to get it right, they were getting close and the preparation would certainly be huge, Us Magazine reported. She added since the project was so big, she feels it to be one of those with which she can end her acting career it in a great way. Jolie had recently confessed to an American Newspaper as well, saying that acting was her mother’s choice for her, and she only realized in her mid30’s that she wanted to focus on other things.

Amritsar, JVarious representatives of Sikh bodies are expected to assemble at the Golden Temple here on Friday to pay tribute to those killed during "Operation Blue Star" in the month of June 1984. Meanwhile, the All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledge that the then government had been wrong in ordering the Indian Army to launch a military operation on the Golden Temple to flush out armed followers led by Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale. The AISSF asked Sukhbir Singh Badal to issue a whip to the Shiromani Akali Dal's (SAD) newly-elected MPs to move a resolution in parliament on June 6 to condemn the army operation. (ANI)

VICTORIA - In celebration of Clean Air Day, the B.C. government is renewing its commitment to fund successful air quality programs, protecting the health of British Columbians, local communities and the environment. The BC Lung Association has been awarded $200,000 to continue the popular Wood Stove Exchange Program. Since 2008, the B.C. government has partnered with the BC Lung Association to encourage British Columbians to replace their old wood stoves for new low-emission appliances. To date, the Province has put $2.28 million towards the program, successfully replacing nearly 6,000 wood stoves. "Clean Air Day serves as a reminder to B.C. families, government and industry that we all must do our part to ensure we have the best air quality possible in our communities. Through this funding, we are continuing our leadership in climate action and providing programs with a positive effect on both the health of British Columbians and the environment," says Mary Polak,

Ten ways Ottawa is changing how to become a Canadian citizen eligible to apply for citizenship. Revoking citizenship from terrorists This is a major change carried forward from a private member’s bill that failed to pass last year. Critically, it applies only to dual citizens, as Canada isn’t able to leave someone stateless. The new bill would allow Canada to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism, treason or spying abroad. Authorities could also revoke citizenship from dual citizens involved in an organized “armed conflict” within Canada, and deny citizenship to permanent residents who do the same. Catherine Dauvergne, a law professor at the University of British Columbia who studies immigration, called this change “possibly the most dangerous” reform because it creates a two-tier system and “expresses a profound lack of trust in the Canadian justice system,” which would otherwise deal with criminal charges in domestic cases.

Josh Wingrove Ottawa — The Globe and Mail The federal government has tabled changes to Canada’s citizenship law, billed as the first overhaul in a generation. The rules make it tougher to get citizenship but also pledge to tackle the backlog of applications. Here are some of the major changes. Longer waits to apply for citizenship The wait time for a resident to apply for citizenship is getting longer. Under the new rules, when passed, a resident will need to have lived at least four of six years in Canada, including at least half a year physically in the country for four of those six years. Previously, the requirement was that an applicant live three of four years in Canada, though with no minimum requirement to be physically present in those years, so long as they could somehow demonstrate they were living in the country. The changes will also include a new question on a citizenship application form, asking applicants to declare an “intent to reside” in Canada as a citizen, with the government saying the purpose is to signal citizenship is meant for people

who want to live in Canada. Departmental officials said no one will check if citizens actually do, but the Immigration Minister now has the power to revoke citizenship if people make “false representations” on their applications. Tougher language requirements

Applicants from age 14 to 64 will now have to meet a language requirement in English or French, as well as a knowledge requirement in either language. Current rules applied only those aged to 18 to 54, and the knowledge requirement could be done with the help of an interpreter. Interpreters now will not be allowed. Departmental officials stressed this was to further signal citizenship is for those who intend to live, work and integrate in Canada. “There’s only one way to really to get to know Canada… and that is through direct experience of the life of this country,” Mr. Alexander said. Residency fasttrack for soldiers This offers a faster track to citizenship for those who are a permanent resident who enlists with, or a foreign national on exchange with, the Canadian Forces. Doing so continuously essentially knocks a year off the residency requirement – after three years in the forces, a candidate is

Higher fines, prison sentences for fraud

also adding a new $300 fee for adult applicants, who currently pay only 20 per cent of an application cost. A “right of citizenship” fee of $100 also remains in effect. Amid it all, the government hopes to cut down a backlog, which is currently between two and three years and includes 320,000 cases, to one year by 2015-2016. Liberal Immigration Critic John McCallum has doubts about raising the fee at a time when wait times have soared, roughly doubling since 2008. “The question that sticks out at me like a sore thumb is the quadrupling of the fee and the doubling of the processing time,” he said. Tax requirements Prospective citizens will need to file taxes in Canada for four out of six years in order to submit an application for residency. The current rules don’t require them to file taxes in Canada. The changes don’t appear to affect Canadians working and living abroad. Creates standards for registered citizenship consultants

The penalties for fraud – by either an applicant or a citizenship consultant – are being substantially hiked. Such fraud can include lying about whether someone lives in Canada or has adequate knowledge of the country, or misrepresenting whether any criminal issues would prevent someone from getting citizenship. Current penalties included a maximum fine of $1,000 and/or a year in prison. The new fines are a maximum fine of $100,000 and/or five years in prison. The changes also include stiff penalties in extreme cases to more quickly strip citizenship from someone and force them from the country, though Canada acknowledges it cannot leave someone stateless, and therefore can’t strip citizenship from someone with only a Canadian passport. More power to the minister The new rules concentrate more power in the hands of Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander, such as giving him the power to unilaterally grant citizenship. Critically, it also gives him the power to revoke citizenship without a court hearing in cases where “false representation or fraud” led to citizenship being granted. Under the outgoing rules, a subject facing that kind of revocation had a right to a court hearing. They no longer will.

Streamlining the application process The current process takes three steps and includes a citizenship judge. The new one will take one step and require only a citizenship officer, with judges instead mostly presiding over citizenship applications. The number of citizenship judges – 30 full-timeequivalent positions, currently – is expected to decline. the government is

Under the current rules, citizenship consultants aren’t registered or regulated by government, a system Ottawa says is vulnerable to abuse and fraud. The new law will define who an “authorized representative” is and develop regulations to create a regulatory body. Citizenship consultants had asked for this, to ward off those who aren’t legitimate professionals. More help for "Lost Canadians" Changes made in 2009 fixed a loophole that excluded citizenship for some so-called “Lost Canadians,” such as Jackie Scott, pictured above. Those changes applied to the vast majority of cases, departmental officials said, but the new rules tabled Thursday will further expand the initiative. Under the new rules, those born before 1947 in the country, and their first generation born abroad, will be eligible for citizenship.

Second racist Justin Bieber video emerges After Justin Bieber’s racist joke video emerged recently where he used the ‘n’ word 5 times, another video of the singer has been released where he’s singing a racist parody. The clip, posted online by the TMZ.com, shows the 20-year-old pop brat looking directly into the camera while he sings his 2009 hit song ‘One Less Lonely Girl’, replacing ‘girl’ with the ‘n’ word. Previously, Bieber had released a statement of apology for the first video, saying that he didn’t know his words could hurt as he was a 14-year-old kid back then, but has now learned from his mistakes.

By Jennifer Saltman Students walked out of schools across B.C. on Wednesday morning to express their frustration at being caught in the middle of the contract dispute between teachers and the provincial government. "I'm surprised," said Victoria Barker, the Grade 12 student at Surrey's Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary who organized the walkout on Facebook. "I'm a little in shock right now, but I'm really glad there's so much support." Around her, passing motorists honked and a few dozen of her fellow students held placards and waved. A couple of parents — including her own — also turned up. "They're just as frustrated as I am and they want something to change," Barker said. Almost 14,000 people signed up for the walkout on Facebook, but actual participation varied from school to school. In Vancouver, more than 100 students from John Oliver Secondary walked out, which appears to have had one of the largest turnouts There were

students from a number of schools who RSVP'd on the Facebook page, but ended up staying in class citing tests and important school work or that they were discouraged from leaving school. Others left but didn't join the protest.Students in most districts were told that if they walked out they would be marked absent for the day and that they could not protest on school property. This is the second week teachers have held rotating strikes, closing all schools in the province for one day each week. The province has also instituted a partial lockout, restricting when teachers can work outside of class time.

Now, an app that brings pregnant women together to share and care

Opinion Editorial Seniors Week in B.C. VICTORIA - The week of June 2, 2014, has been proclaimed Seniors Week in British Columbia. As I have been travelling the province and meeting with seniors, I am reminded that age is no barrier to what one can do for oneself and what one can do for others. Many seniors have needs that are genuine and legitimate, but we also must remember and recognize the contribution that seniors make and the value they add to our communities. When we really think about it, seniors give and contribute much more to society then they get in return.

Yes, it is important to thank our seniors for what they have

done. They have fought in wars, helped to build our country and have broken any number of social and racial barriers, but it is equally important to thank them for what they are continuing to do each day for us and for each other. If in doubt, just think what would happen in this province if everyone over the age of 65 simply "downed tools" for the day. It is

Preggie, a new app made for pregnant women, creates a mobile-social network for expecting women to share and discuss things they care about. So now, expecting women don’t have to use Facebook for connecting to others. The biggest benefit of the app is that pregnant women can feel at ease with others having similar interests and

experiences as they have, CNET reported. The app simply clubs one to other pregnant women with Preggie downloaded on their devices, and gives them freedom to share stories, advice, and support. However, Preggie is only available on iOS as of now. (ANI)

Social media ‘being used in divorce cases to look for hidden assets’ Private user information on social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are now being used to track hidden wealth in divorce cases, a top lawyer has said. Fraud and asset recovery specialist Steven Philippsohn told a UK website that lawyers can apply for court orders for disclosure of private data

without revealing it to the person in question, Metro.co.uk reported. Philippsohn, who for PCB works Litigation, said people are now known to write to each other and about each other more than ever before in texts, emails, on social media, and they as lawyers can try to find evidence there. (ANI)

Without the efforts and contributions that seniors continue to make long after they have left the paid workforce, our governments at the federal, provincial and local levels would be faced with a massive bill for the services they would need to pay people to provide.

BC government proclaims KomagataMaru Remembrance Day Gurpreet Singh VANCOUVER: In yet another significant move, the BC government today proclaimed May 28 as “KomagataMaru Remembrance Day” at a special event held at the provincial legislature in Victoria. The BC Liberal government that brought an apology motion for the KomagataMaru episode in 2008 went a step further to proclaim the remembrance day as part of its ongoing efforts to recognize the historical wrongs. The KomagataMaru ship carrying over 300 South Asian passengers was forced to return under the discriminatory immigration laws in 1914. Most passengers came here as British subjects as both India and Canada were the British colonies. The Prime Minister Stephen Harper had apologized for the incident in 2008. On the occasion of the 100 years of the episode, cutting across party lines, the ruling BC Liberals and the opposition

New Democrats today organized a special commemorative event where the remembrance day proclamation was released in the presence of South Asian community leaders. Those who attended the event included the descendants of the KomagataMaru passengers. Among them were JaswinderToor and his brother Raj Toor, the grandsons of Puran Singh Janetpura, who was aboard the vessel. The leaders of the KhalsaDiwan Society, the oldest Sikh institution that helped the ship passengers back then were also in attendance. Besides, the leaders of the KomagataMaru Heritage Foundation and Prof. Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation were present on the occasion. These two groups have been instrumental behind the release of commemorative postal stamp and apology. The Premier Christy Clark announced that the return of the KomagataMaru passengers was a loss to Canada and BC as those aboard the ship would have contributed to the progress of the country much as the South Asian immigrants today have contributed to the prosperity. She acknowledged that the KomagataMaru passengers were discriminated on the basis of their ethnicity. The opposition leader John

Horgan also spoke at the event. There was a big applause inside the house when the Advanced Education Minster Amrik Virk made an announcement about the proclamation. Later, in his address in the legislature the New Democratic MLA Harry Bains equated Gurdit Singh, who charted the KomagataMaru with Rosa Parks, who had challenged the segregation laws in US. According to him, Gurdit Singh had challenged a racist law by bringing a ship full of British subjects. He pointed out that the Canadian government back then did not just indulge in the KomagataMaru standoff, but was also responsible for disfranchising the Indians and conspiring to relocate them in British Honduras. He reminded the legislature that those responsible for the KomagataMaru tragedy were behind the shooting inside the Vancouver Sikh temple that claimed the life of a towering South Asian leader, BhaiBhaag Singh in September, 1914. Notably, the first Indo Canadian MLA Moe Sihota and the first Indo Canadian Premier of BC, UjjalDosanjhwere also present at today’s events. MLA Raj Chouhan, the first Indo Canadian Deputy Speaker of the house also shared his emotional experience on being first elected in 2005.

Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton topped poll on beauty habits as Britain’s beauty icon, which was held by shopping channel QVC recently. British women really prefer the 32year-old Duchess of Cambridge’s freshfaced look in comparison to make-up clad celebrities where two in three rated Kate as “perfection”. Daily Express’ fashion features editor, Claire Brayford said that the royal is a “classic, approachable beauty” who’s always flawlessly groomed, making her look more like a “star”. She even preferred to do her own make-up at her wedding without a professional, she added. The survey, which also rated singer Cheryl Cole and Michelle Keegan, also found that women love getting compliments, which mean slightly more if they come from a friend rather their partner. (ANI)

BC government marks Komagata Maru in BC Legislature

AROUND THE TOWN

Above- Komagata Maru Stamp was unveiled by Harbans Kaur Toor, the daughter of one of the passengers Pooran Singh Janetpuria. Below: Simon Fraser University and Khalsa Diwan Society hosted a function on May 23, at the Vancouver campus to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Komagata Maru. Political and community leaders along with Komagata Maru stakeholders gathered to commenmorate this anniversary. The Komagata Maru incident is one of the most infamous episodes in Vancouver’s early history. On May 23, 1914, the Komagata Maru, a Japanese charter ship, brought 376 migrants from Punjab, India – almost all British citizens – to Vancouver. Officials refused to let them disembark and after two months the ship was forcibly sent back to India where British India police in Calcutta shot dead 19 of the passengers.

Robert Fox, Executive Director of Oxfam Canada presenting a plaque to Asa Johal, Chairman, India Cultural Centre of Canada (Gurdwara Nanak Niwas ,Richmond) for contributing more than $10,000 to the Phillipino Relief effort.

Victoria-The Government of British Columbia, on May 28th, joins many others in BC Legislature to remember the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the ship and its passengers. On May 23, 1914, a ship named the Komagata Maru entered Vancouver's Burrard Inlet carrying 376 passengers from India who had hopes for a new life in Canada. After that long journey they were turned away and not allowed to enter the country. What made this event more tragic was that, upon their forced repatriation to India, 19 individuals were killed. B.C. is the most ethnically diverse province in Canada and welcomes nearly 40,000 new immigrants every year. One-quarter of the people in B.C. are self-identified visible minorities, and 5% identify as Aboriginal. “Today, the Government of British Columbia joins many others to remember the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the ship and its passengers”,

said Premier Christy Clark. The Komagata Maru incident was a stain on the history of Canada and highlights the racist government policies of the time. Despite the fact that all of the passengers were British Subjects, they were not allowed to set foot on Canadian soil. Instead, they faced racism and hatred. In 2008, the B.C. legislature made a formal apology to the South Asian community and to the families of the victims of this incident. The motion reads as follows: "Be it resolved that this Legislature apologizes for the events of May 23, 1914, when 376 passengers of the Komagata Maru, stationed off Vancouver harbour, were denied entry by Canada. The House deeply regrets that the passengers, who sought refuge in our country and our province, were turned away without benefit of the fair and impartial treatment befitting a society where people of all cultures are welcomed and accepted." "Today this treatment would be unimaginable. We, as a province and as a nation, embrace people from all cultures. For over 100 years, the South Asian community has contributed to the development of Canada and British Columbia, and the cultural diversity they bring has enriched our society, our communities, and our nation," said Premier Clark.

By Travis Marshall Love them or loathe them, all-inclusive resorts dominate the landscapes of many popular destinations, and there’s no denying they can offer an unrivaled combination of convenience and affordability. But how do you decide whether the all-inclusive option makes the most sense for you? Here are ten tips for going all-inclusive, including when and where to find the best deals and how to get the most from all-inclusive packages. 1.When to Go AllInclusive Determining when to choose all-inclusive comes down to the destination you intend to visit and the activities you plan to do there. "Some destinations are geared toward the all-inclusive experience," says Johnny DiScala, who runs the travel website

Ten Tips for All-Inclusive Vacations

JohnnyJet.com. All-inclusive hot-spots like Jamaica and the Dominican Republic have limited tourism infrastructures outside the resorts, he explains, which can make it frustrating to get around or organize activities independently. So do some research, and figure out whether you're comfortable with eating, drinking, and hanging out almost entirely at the resort, because all-inclusive means you pay up front for meals, drinks, and certain resort activities whether you use them or not. "If you don't intend to eat or drink a lot at the resort, an allinclusive probably isn't the best choice for you," DiScala says. If it's a destination that begs to be explored, one where you prefer to hit the streets, experience the culture, and try a variety of

restaurants, an all-inclusive won't be a good deal for you, no matter what it costs. 2. Book Ahead Ideally, the all-inclusivevacation planning process should start a few months, even a year, in advance, depending on the season in which you plan to travel. "While all-inclusive resorts typically have some decent lastminute sales during less popular travel seasons, the airfare is often so expensive that it cancels out the benefits," says Carey Driscoll, a travel agent for Beach Bum Vacation. "You're more

Night market comes to Surrey Now the people living on this side of the fraser river will not have to travel to Richmond to enjoy the extremely popular night market. The Richmond night market draws thousands of people from May to October and the organizers of Surrey night market hope to bring similar crowd to the Surrey market when it opens. The Surrey Night Market will run from July 4 to August 30th, 2014. It will open every Friday and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 6050 176 Street in Surrey at the Cloverdate Fairgrounds. Surrey's version launches in the summer and will be an open-air market for residents buying and selling a variety of local foods, services and goods. It's planned as a multicultural, family-friendly event for people

throughout the region. It's also expected the market, which will set up shop at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, will showcase a variety of talent and performing arts. To find out how you can become a vendor or a sponsor for the event, or to get more information, visit www.surreynightmarket.com

likely to find a resort that offers a good price if you book far in advance, and reputable resorts will offer discounts for booking early." 3. Remember the Seasons If you're looking for a bargain on an all-inclusive vacation in the Caribbean or Mexico, travel during the summer low season, or the spring and fall shoulder seasons, when many resorts slash their rates. This includes hurricane season (June to November), which can bring discounted rates up to 60 percent off their high-season counterparts. "Hurricane season is typically the most affordable time to travel to all-inclusive resorts," Driscoll says. "Just be flexible, buy insurance, and understand the potential consequences." There are also times to avoid at all costs (unless you're

looking for a certain kind of environment), mainly spring break (mid-March to mid-April), Christmas, and New Year's. "These are the most popular times to travel to the Caribbean and Mexico," Driscoll says. "Most resorts don't have sales at this time; almost all have minimum stays; and the best all-inclusive resorts will sell out a year in advance." 4. Get Honest Reviews All-inclusive resorts aren't just places to crash after a long day of exploring. They are selfsustaining worlds where you'll eat, sleep, and play for most—if not all—of your trip. This fact makes it even more important to ensure pre-departure that the resort fits your needs and delivers on its own hype. "Every all-inclusive resort looks amazing based on the marketing photos, brochures, and websites," Driscoll explains. "Sometimes the beach looks pretty in a photo, but it may actually be rocky or have an undertow so you can't swim. Other times you might see photos of a recently renovated, high-end suite, but when you show up you get a standard room that hasn't been updated." Do thorough research by looking collectively at the traveler reviews on websites like Orbitz or CheapTickets, or try to find a travel agent who has personal experience with the properties he/she represents. Continued from page 10 5. Pay Once Unless you're a flight attendant or have airline miles to burn, you'll get the best overall price for an all-inclusive vacation—e.g., resort, flights, ground transfers—if you book everything together. Online booking sites offer special discounts to people who purchase some combination of flights, hotels, and car rentals together. However, Driscoll maintains that specialized travel agents can provide a better overall experience. "If there are problems, travel agents can cut through the mess and fix the situation. They can also make sure [all "For Friendly & Honest Service Always Remember" costs] are included up front—for example, transportation to/from the airport, flight and hotel taxes, and arrival/departure fees that are charged by some countries for international travel." two reasons: First, while loads of on-site activities like volleyball, water aerobics, and renting on-site beach gear may be included in the price, others will not— especially spa services or activities that require off-site travel. For example, many resorts with scuba-diving centers will advertise free diving lessons. This almost always means a short—10- to 15minute—lesson in the pool with the option to pay anywhere from $30 to $100 for full-length dives in the ocean. So whether it's getting pampered in the spa or hitting the flats to go fishing, check if the resort offers special packages geared toward your particular activity. And second, since you've already paid for them, you'll want to take advantage of as many included activities as possible. "Read the program—a lot of people miss out on less obvious activities

around the resort," DiScala says. "A lot of resorts offer live shows, cooking classes, kids' programs—at a resort in Tahiti, they gave lessons on how to open a coconut, which was a small thing but still really cool." 9. Food and Drink Many all-inclusive resorts offer two types of dining, the all-you-can-eat buffets and snack bars that are open all or most of the time, and à la carte meals, usually at a variety of themed sit-down restaurants; e.g., French, Italian, Brazilian, etc. Generally, guests get a limited number of à la carte meals, and these restaurants fill up fast. So decide in advance which restaurants you want to try, and make the reservations when you check in. Like the buffets, drinks are usually a bulk affair—local beers, well cocktails, and premixed frozen drinks. But even if you don't drink alcohol, you don't have to feel like you're missing out or paying for something you won't use. "Normally, drinkers get beer, rum and Coke, whiskey and Coke, vodka and a mixer—items bought in bulk by the resort," Driscoll says. "But non-drinkers can ask for fresh fruit smoothies and juices, which actually use better ingredients, and in the end, it really balances out." 10. Consider an Upgrade Many all-inclusive resorts offer tiered packages or "club levels," which can work out to a good bargain if the perks match your needs. "For our honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, we upgraded to a club-level suite for a little more money," Webster says. "We got a fully stocked refrigerator, access to the club room with food 24/7, our own clublevel concierge, and free Internet access." At the Barcelo Maya Palace Resort on Mexico's Riviera Maya, for example, the daily surcharge for upgrading to "Club Premium" status costs $25/person, and the benefits include—among others—access to the VIP lounge, premium drinks, free Internet access, discounts on spa treatments, as well as unlimited, priority reservations for dinners at the à la carte restaurants (rather than the buffets).

Rihanna receives 'Fashion Icon Award' Rihanna was honored with Fashion Icon Award 2014 at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America awards. Designer Zac Posen said that it has been an incredible journey as the 'Umbrella' singer is a risk taker and knows what she likes. The 26-year-old singer has all the right ingredients like ambition, strength, and also vulnerability to be a huge superstar and her occasional use of shock value has kept her balanced with her classy beauty, he added. Previous honorees have been Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Nicole Kidman and Johnny Depp.

Now that Anushka Sharma has joined the cast of Dil Dhadakne Do, all eyes are on her and her exflame Ranveer Singh. Though the duo never admitted to their relationship, Ranveer had spoken about Anushka being special. They also appeared together on Koffee With Karan. However, looks like there won't be any tension in the air, considering

Ranveer's current ladylove Deepika Padukone has flown in from the US, and will be around. Rumour has it that Anushka's beau cricketer Virat Kohli will also be flying in to spend time with his ladylove on the cruise ship off the coast of Barcelona. Do I foresee a double date? By arrangement with Mid-Day.com

How to spend less money personal finance rule, but it's also one of the most effective. How does "paying yourself first" work? When trying to save more money, most people attempt to save whatever money is left at the end of the month. The flaw with this method is that there usually isn't any money left over to save. When you pay yourself first, you set aside a portion of your income to save before you spend money on anything else. So before you buy groceries, before you pay your rent, before you put gas in your car, the first bill you should be paying is to yourself. By paying yourself first, you're taking action and showing that your future is the most important thing to you. With regular contributions to your savings, you will have created the opportunity to deal with emergencies in cash, pay for a down payment on a home, go back to school or save for retirement. Why is paying yourself first so effective?

The method of paying yourself first works so well because it's simple: You will spend less money because you have less to spend. So many people believe that developing the habit of saving money is impossible. But you don't have to start by putting hundreds of dollars every month into your savings. Start small and work your way up as your income increases. Almost everyone can save at least one per cent of their income, so if that's all you think you can afford, start with that. Then, as your income increases, or when you find ways to trim

other expenses in your budget, try increasing your savings rate to three per cent or even five per cent, and go from there. Spend less money, save more money If you've never saved regularly before, the best way to make savings a habit is to set up automatic deductions. Start by logging on to your online bank account and set up deductions to be taken from your pay cheque before you get a chance to spend it. Because the transfer is automatic, you will never forget to manually transfer the money, and you won't be tempted to spend it either. It's hard to miss what you never had to spend! When you decide to pay yourself first, you are creating sound financial habits that will stay with you for the rest of your life. The ability to save more money can be challenging, but by having money in the bank, you are creating both opportunity and stability -- and a better life for yourself and your family.

By Krystal Yee Canadian Living If you've ever been in debt, struggled with making (and sticking to!) a budget, or never seem to have enough money to pay your bills each month, you're not alone. With debt levels continuing to rise, it's clear that many Canadians are finding it difficult to spend less money. We all know what we have to do in order to spend less money and save more money -- like cut down on variable expenses, increase our income and create a budget. But according to a recent survey by the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA), almost half of Canadian workers are unable to save just five per cent of their net pay; so how many are actually putting that knowledge to work? The best way to ensure that you spend less money and save more money is to learn how to pay yourself first. This strategy might be considered an old

With her smart mouth statements, Sonam has irked several in the industry. A hot statement came from Sonam Kapoor for Kareena Kapoor. A few years back Sonam had praised Bebo for her dressing sense and style. So much was Sonam in awe of Kareena, that she didn't mind turning 'gay' for her. According to a report on Times of India, Sonam Kapoor said, "I wouldn't mind turning gay for Kareena". However after all the praise, something bitchy about Kareena also comes out. Sonam had commented that Kareena Kapoor is huge on gossip. With a facial expression giving away that Kareena is the Miss tittle-tattle of Bollywood. Sonam Kapoor made a statement about actresses in Bollywood. She said,
