ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested two men on drug charges April 16 after officers saw one of the men texting while driving.

Police had been patrolling on Morris Road, when officers saw a driver texting and pulled him over.

While talking to the driver and his passenger, officers found a bag with meth in the passenger’s pocket.

Police also found that the driver had a suspended license.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a woman on April 15 after she was caught allegedly stealing $1,200 worth of greeting cards, jewelry and clothes from the Hallmark on North Point Parkway.

The woman entered the store at 6:30 p.m. and was seen taking merchandise and placing it in her purse and pants pockets. At one point, she was also seen taking a gift bag and filling it with several items. She left without paying.

Employees called police.

While the woman was walking through the parking lot, she spotted police and returned to the store. Police found her in possession of 71 missing items.

The woman, later identified as 52-year-old Angela Adams of Alpharetta, was arrested for felony shoplifting.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man on April 15 after he was seen traveling over 80 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Police were patrolling around North Point Parkway and North Point Drive, when officers saw a red motorcycle travel past them at a high speed. Radar clocked the driver traveling at 82 mph.

The driver told police he had just gotten off of work and did not realize how fast he had been traveling.

The driver, later identified as 27-year-old Wesley Adair of Alpharetta, was arrested without incident for reckless driving and speeding.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A man called police April 17 after he noticed that

woman entered the store at 5 p.m. and asked about purchasing the phones. The pair asked several questions about paying with a combination of cash and card, before the woman left to withdraw cash from an ATM machine.

While the man continued to talk to the employee about payment, he grabbed the two phones and ran out of the store.

The employee said the woman had probably prepared a getaway car, because when he tried to follow the man, he could not find him.

The phones were worth $2,200 total.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating an April 14 incident in which two new iPhones were stolen from the T-Mobile store on Windward Parkway.

Alpharetta churches expand downtown footprint Baptist church group opens Hope Center to serve community

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Twice in the past month, downtown Alpharetta churches have cut the ribbons on major projects they hope will have a positive and farreaching effect on the community.

On Sunday, more than 50 people gathered in the parking lot at the Alpharetta First Baptist Church on Academy Street for a brief ceremony marking the dedication of a new community outreach facility.

Then, they paraded across the street.

“With all of the new happenings in downtown, we have a heart passion to be a good neighbor in our community,” First Baptist Executive Pastor the Rev. David Smith said. “Our lives’ desire is to be able to say to the businesses, the restaurants that we’re here to help.

That’s our heartbeat right there.”

The Hope Center occupies the top floor of the building at Main and Academy Street in City Center.

Its 2,600 square feet of space includes conference and consulting rooms and a larger lecture hall.

Smith said the church has invested in the neighborhood of $200,000 to lease and furnish the space.

Locating off campus, he said, was a conscious decision.

“Our church has a passion to reach into our community for those who are in life’s crises or life’s transitions,” he said. “Most of those deal with emotional crisis or, perhaps, spiritual crisis.”

The Hope Center provides support for those who have lost loved ones or who are struggling with other issues, such as addiction.

Myles Chatham, one of the leaders associated with the Hope Center, said the organization sprang from First Baptist with three goals in mind: through Biblecentered help groups, one-on-one confidential care and professional counseling services.

“The Hope Network exists to provide care, hope and truth in times of life’s crises and transitions, so this is an opportunity to serve our community,” Chatham said. “It’s right in the heart of Alpharetta.”

The Hope Center, Chatham said, is partnering with businesses and any other group that want to support the effort. Everyone faces some crisis in their life, he

The ceremony comes three weeks after Alpharetta First United Methodist Church consecrated a new, $10.7 million addition to its campus at Main and Cumming streets. The new building provides a Children’s Ministries addition that features a theater for large groups and improved classrooms for smaller gatherings. The project also increased adult classroom space and added 10,000 square feet of gathering space that features guest services areas and a cafe.

Work also included renovations to the church’s Student Center, adding classrooms and enclosing the portico.

Gypsy Rose brings live music within steps of Canton Street

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Music lovers have a new place to meet and enjoy the sounds of local bands, all within walking distance of dozens of Canton Street restaurants.

On April 25, Gypsy Rose, a music venue and event space, held its ribbon cutting and welcome party. It’s located on Alpharetta Street, in the old Classy Clutter building near East Alley in Downtown Roswell.

Dozens of people attended the official opening, including representatives from Roswell Inc, city officials and local residents.

“We’re really glad to have this in our backyard,” City Councilman Matt Judy said. “Hopefully, we can continue to work together and make this one of the best places around Atlanta.”

Gypsy Rose is all about the music, said founder Brittany Crooms.

“It’s the only real, local place devoted completely to live music,” Crooms said.

“It helps with supporting musicians, the music scene and the arts in general.

But it’s also a place for people to go.

There are all these amazing restaurants around here, and people will typically eat at one of them and come here after they’re done. It’s a place where people can hang out after their meals.”

The venue is devoted mostly to original live music and emerging artists.

“It’s bands that a lot of people haven’t heard of that are getting exposure,” Crooms said.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Gypsy Rose features singer-songwriters and Americana. On Fridays and Saturdays,

the venue carries a high energy sound, with funk and Southern rock. Sundays are devoted to blues and, occasionally, reggae.

Crooms has been in the music world most of her life. It started with a passion for singing and acting at a young age and only grew once she moved to Athens, where she regularly worked closely with local musicians and bands.

She said she missed that thriving music scene when she moved to Roswell about two years ago and decided to create the concept for Gypsy Rose.

“There was nowhere to see live music,” Crooms said. “Some of the restaurants had acoustics, but it wasn’t the same. And when I drove by the Classy Clutter, I thought it looked like a music venue. Everyone thought I was crazy, but it worked…

“It feels really good to finally have this open. It’s been a long road. It’s been in the works since last June.”

In addition to live music every week, Crooms said Gypsy Rose is planning to hold a march with Wasted Potential Brass Band down Canton Street during every Alive in Roswell event.

The group has already held one such march during the first 2019 Alive in Roswell in April, and it was a huge success, Crooms said.

“It was slammed,” she said. “It felt like Mardi Gras or Bourbon Street.”

Some of the upcoming shows include the Randall Bramblett Band on May 3; Cosmic Charlie, a Grateful Dead tribute band, on May 4; and Michael Tolcher on May 11.

Thousands peruse plants at Roswell Garden Faire

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Thousands of people flocked to Bulloch Hall on April 27 to peruse plants and gardening items during the 20th annual Garden Faire.

The annual fair was held by the North Fulton Master Gardeners in partnership with Historic Bulloch Hall and the 2019 Roswell Azalea Festival. It’s the North Fulton Master Gardeners/ largest fundraiser, with process going toward educational classes, university and college scholarships, and local demonstration gardens.

More than 2,000 plants were on sale this year, with selections ranging from herbs and vegetables to perennials, shrubs and trees. Vendors also provided specialty plants, such as orchids, Japanese maples and hostas.

“Since most of the plants come from the gardens and greenhouses of North Fulton Master Gardeners themselves, the sale also offers the opportunity to have gardening questions answered by the people who know the plants best,” said Publicity and Marketing Chair Lee Tanenbaum.

The Garden Faire also featured several vendors and local businesses, who offered items like bird houses, local honey, garden decor, tools and jewelry.

Several members of the North Fulton Master Gardeners as well as representatives from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were on hand to answer questions about native plants and gardening practices.

“The Garden Faire is a fun way for us to provide horticultural education and

inspiration to the North Fulton gardening community,” Tanenbaum said. “An important goal of the Master Gardener program is to answer the public’s questions about gardening or other horticulture issues using university researchbased information.”

This year, the Garden Faire held two specialty sections: the Children’s Corner and the Eco-Corner.

The Children’s Corner offered ageappropriate activities and information related to gardening. The Eco-Corner offered information about energy saving and recycling as well as unique, handmade crafts made from recyclable objects.

The North Fulton Master Gardeners provide classes, resources and demonstrations year-round.

“You will find the North Fulton Master Gardeners volunteering at our various demonstration garden projects,” Tanenbaum said. “You may find us at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve maintaining the entrance and the long expanse of climbing roses and iris that line the way to the visitors center. Other Master Gardeners maintain a wildflower meadow at the Big Trees Forest Preserve in Sandy Springs. We also maintain a demonstration garden at Bulloch Hall which reflects the geometric design and landscape traditions of ornamental gardens in the antebellum South. Master Gardeners also volunteer at the Archibald Smith Plantation home in Roswell where we are planting native plants and have had beautiful granite benches installed along the trail.”

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Cancer and its treatments are constantly evolving, yet it remains a difficult topic to talk about in general conversation.

The obscurity about the topic is so bad that most people think they have very low chances of developing cancer, even though it is consistently ranked one of the leading causes of death each year in the United State, said WellStar medical oncologist Dr. Qin Zhang. The numbers don’t add up.

Zhang was one of five speakers at WellStar North Fulton’s signature event “No One Fights Alone,” held April 26 at the Country Club of the South. The event featured a panel of medical professionals who dispelled some of the myths surrounding cancer treatment and advances in the field.

The panel was one of several events and seminars held by WellStar North Fulton about health and wellness that are held throughout the year. One series, “Speaking about Wellness for Women,” is specifically geared toward providing knowledge and resources to women to help them create healthier lifestyles and to celebrate the spirit of all women.

Zhang was joined by breast surgeon Dr. Laura Pearson, thoracic surgeon Dr. Theolyn Price, gynecologic oncologist Dr. Evelyn Reynolds and radiation oncologist Dr. Mark McLaughlin.

“Women are the main drivers of healthcare in the family,” Pearson said.

“It’s important that we hold events like this so we can get this information and get it back to our families.”

Pearson primarily spoke about Margie’s Law, which Georgia recently joined 36 other states in passing. The law

requires healthcare facilities to tell a patient if dense breast tissue was detected.

It was passed after a Savannah woman, Margie Singleton, was not alerted about a lump of dense breast tissue during a routine 3D mammogram that later turned out to be breast cancer.

The new law will help the state become a better advocate of women’s health through better screening practices and help women take control of their health, Pearson said.

She added that women with denser breast have a higher risk for developing breast cancer.

Reynolds said that endometrial cancer is the most common form of cancer she treats. And cancer treatments have evolved significantly over the years. They now provide several minimally invasive options.

She added that the WellStar team might be small, but it always stays up-to-date with national guidelines for cancer treatments.

Price primarily treats lung cancer, which is mostly caused by smoking. But it can appear in nonsmokers as well, Price said, and screening is the most important part of treatment.

Zhang echoed her.

“Any cancer can be cured if it’s treated early enough,” Zhang said. “But you have to bring it to us first as early as possible. Screening is key.”

McLaughlin added that successful treatment often relies on collaboration between staff and experts, who work with patients and their loved ones. It can often include helping the patient’s family members understand the diagnosis and the journey to wellness.

Innovation Academy begins ‘marketing’ phase for new students New STEM high school set to open in in 2020

By CANDY WAYLOCK Candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. - Steel girders are going up and concrete is being poured as Innovation Academy high school takes structural shape in downtown Alpharetta where old Milton High School once stood.

As they eye the August 2020 opening for the STEM-based school, Fulton School System officials now shift their attention to elements inside the building, primarily marketing the unique approach for learning to prospective students. “[Innovation Academy] is for the student who seeks a different high school experience to develop tangible skills to take into the workplace,” said Doannie Tran, PhD., assistant superintendent for Innovative Programs. “The school offers a creative, collaborative setting to solve problems in an authentic setting so students are fully prepared for the workforce of the future.”

The STEM-concept school is a departure from the traditional high school set-

ting and will likely appeal to the student who seeks a deeper dive into the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, Tran noted.

The curriculum aligns with “design thinking,” a problem-solving process where students define the problem, generate alternatives, choose a solution, implement the solution, and learn from the process. Tran said an integrated curriculum means concepts will be addressed across all courses.

The school is organized around three learning paths — healthcare sciences, information technology, and engineering — which are among the fastest growing industries across the globe.

The district is creating partnerships with area businesses and corporations to support Innovation Academy through resources, information, internships, professional development and other avenues, noted Cliff Jones, chief academic officer for Fulton Schools.

“This is the first step in the process of understanding what Innovation Academy offers, our direction, where it is heading, and if this is the right school for you.”

On letting go

Christina and I traveled to Norman, Oklahoma last week, possibly for the second to last time.

We’ll be back in a couple of weeks for Ray appen Carl’s graduation.

Publisher ray@appenmediagroup.com Amelia graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and when Carl graduates, we will have been attending the school for the better part of 10 years, although it feels longer. During that time, we have always tried to visit at least once a semester to participate, just for a few days in the life that our children live in that wonderful academic world.

We almost always sit in on as many classes as we can fit into our schedule, and both the kids — Amelia and Carl — have always been glad, I think, that we would have the interest in doing that. The professors too, I think, are usually a bit surprised, but after they figure out that there really is no hidden agenda, they almost always relax and, in the back of their minds, may even be somewhat flattered.

The visits to Norman and especially attending classes, always takes me back — way back — to that place in my mind that will forever store my time in school. It is a bittersweet place for me. I immediately miss it and want to go back.

And while I do love what I do now and where my life resides now, that time I don’t think I will ever let go completely.

It always startles me when I hear a parent bragging about how fast their kid went through school. Other than the expense, “why,” I always think to myself, “why would you see that as a good thing?” So, they can get into corporate faster and start their 25 years of doing something for the benefit of someone else instead of spending their time learning for themselves?

We’re going to miss OU. Christina and I used to spend as much time as we could in the soft, enabling silence of the OU library. We even had a hidden nook where we would go escape to and read while the kids were in class. We’d sit for hours in two stoic high-backed wooden reading chairs, each placed directly beneath two aging framed prints — one of Shakespeare and the other Cervantes. The nook felt like our own special personal space —private space — where only reading and silence were permitted.

Adjacent to our little hidden nook was my favorite — the great reading room with its 30-foot tall ceiling. The room itself is perhaps 150 feet long and paneled wall to wall in hardwoods.

Long narrow windows line the sides of the room and admit diffused light into

vacuous space. Hand-crafted lamps — cast-iron and possibly blown glass — hang from long, black, steel chains bolted into the towering ceiling above. A dark mahogany reading table stretches through the center room like a train in the distance. Long rows of plush leathercovered oak chairs crowd both sides of the table — sentries guarding a royal procession.

Nothing moves. The air is still and feels frozen as if in a tomb. The smell of old books and curiosity from a thousand students, and then thousands more, and the passage of time — decades upon decades — seems to permeate this space.

Three stories up — or was it four — we follow Carl through the archives — deep into the bowels of the library. These books that fill endless rows of steel shelves lie dormant as if in a deep slumber — fading red, dull orange, “earthy” toned covers, deep brown leather-bound books with cracks from age — obviously unused and unread in decades, perhaps longer. We walk slowly, taking care and slouching slightly to avoid hitting the piping running through the low ceilings.

We pass tens of thousands of books and bound periodicals as we follow him.

“Here in Oklahoma there is a law that says that the library can’t sell any of the old books or periodicals and that they must be burned instead if they want to get rid of them,” he tells us. We are alone up here. We pass no students.

Few pass these long, narrow corridors.

“We are in a vault — a time machine of knowledge and of history, “ I think to myself.

I’m glad we do not hurry.

At the end of a row, we turn a corner see a low seated narrow window emitting dull light onto the floor of the walkway, and dust particles ride the beams of light in random motion. Carl points to the small step stool off to the side, next to the window.

“This is my space,” he says, “where I can go. I sometimes sit up here for hours and read,” he shares with us.

“Does he know,“ I wonder. He will tell his children about these books, and this space someday.

Later, we walk past a non-descriptlooking three story building as we leave the library for what may be the last time. I remembered that Carl had shared with me a couple years ago that the building was one of Andrew Carnegie’s first charitable donations and that originally it was the OU library. Now it is where Carl takes many of his Letter’s classes — Latin, philosophy and history. As we walk past the building, I think that Carnegie would probably be pleased to see his donation is still helping bring knowledge to the world after almost a

Panel addresses mental health issues, opioid crisis

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Mental health and substance abuse are growing concerns in North Fulton, but local nonprofits are taking on the issue.

United Way of Greater Atlanta, in collaboration with the North Fulton Mental Health Collaborative, held a summit on child wellbeing April 25 to address the issues.

The event brought together leaders from nonprofits, government, schools, faith groups, and physical and mental health groups to talk about addressing mental health and substance abuse in North Fulton County.

A recurring theme of the event was that mental illness and substance abuse are prevalent in North Fulton despite the area’s affluence.

“People look at North Fulton and say things must be great,” said Scott Ashur, United Way North Fulton Advisory Board chair. “It’s an affluent community. You don’t have homelessness, they say. But that’s from the outside looking in. I think all of us living here know there are problems.”

United Way of Greater Atlanta COO Timothy Pakenham agreed.

“Across the footprint there are mental health and substance abuse issues that does not discriminate on income level, does not discriminate on race and does not discriminate on place.”

The event began with speakers from United Way of Greater Atlanta who spoke about their efforts to improve child well being across the region. Next, other speakers from the community’s behavioral health leadership spoke about their efforts.

Speakers emphasized the growing rates of mental health problems among teens and children.

“We’re seeing [thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts] across the board in all our kids, but especially concerning is how it’s creeping down into our middle school and even elementary school students,” said Cathy Murphy, director of community relations for The Summit Counseling Center.

Then, a panel brought together Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis, Roswell Municipal Judge Brian Hansford, Fulton County Board of Education Member Katha Stuart, Path Light Georgia Founder Britt Parramore and Avanos Senior Vice President of Global Quality Mizanu Kebede.

Bob Ellis Fulton County Commissioner The panel talked about how lawmakers, courts, schools, faith organizations and medical providers can work together to address issues surrounding mental health.

“The thing about mental health is it’s such a wide issue,” Ellis said. “You’ve got teens, adults, vets. It spans all income groups. No one group is going to solve the problem, so it truly does take a collaborative effort, and a coordinated effort. Events like these help foster that collaboration.”

Events like this also help destigmatize mental illness, Ellis said, by showing

there are people who care and that there are resources to help those who are struggling.

For his part, Ellis pointed to the county’s efforts at training for law enforcement, drug take-back events, and lawsuits against pharmaceutical distributers who excessively pushed opioids.

Hansford spoke positively about courts moving from criminalization and to a treatment-focused approach for nonviolent drug offenders, but he said there was need for more coordination between small municipal courts and large county courts with more resources, to get at-risk individuals immediate help and reduce recidivism.

He also had advice for parents.

“I know we all want out kid to hit the home run and get the straight A’s and get the full ride to college, but that just isn’t realistic for every kid,” Hansford said. “It’s important we’re not putting that pressure on them because that’s what drives them to substance abuse and other problems.”

ALPHARETTA, Ga. —Four local men will begin a 3,000-mile, cross-country trip May 25 that, over the course of 41 days, will take them from Cape Flattery, Wash. to Bangor, Maine.

And, it’s all for a good cause — to raise awareness and funds for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Dr. David Bergman, a Johns Creek pediatrician and founder of Pediatric Place, is spearheading the effort along with is son Jonah, who recently graduated from Centennial High School and plans to attend the University of Georgia.

Joining the father-son team are Vik Nat, a technical operations manager from Johns Creek, and Bruce Crawford, a retired, avid cyclist.

David said he chose Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta because of his previous experiences working with them.

“I used to work for CHOA years ago, and I am on staff there,” David said. “I really wanted to give back to the community. They practice excellent medicine.”

He added that it’s his patients that drive and inspire him to create fundraising cycling trips.

“They’re in my heart,” David said.

“There’s always a need to help children.

It’s a cause and passion that’s near and dear to my heart.”

This isn’t the first time David has undertaken a cross-country trip for a cause. In 2017, he teamed up with Centennial High School teacher Michael Higgins on a 38-day trip from the East to West coasts to raise funds for BlazeSports America, a local nonprofit that supports children and military veterans with disabilities. It is a legacy of the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic games.

David and Higgins raised more than

$25,000 during that trip, all going directly to Blazesports.

David is working on a book chronicling the pair’s experiences during that trip.

Although they don’t a set monetary goal for the upcoming ride, David said he hopes to raise about the same amount for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

They’re well on their way. The group has already raised about $1,200.

The cyclists plan to average about 100 miles each day. Bicycling and hiking is a hobby for everyone on the trip, so it’s like they’re always training, David said. No special preparation was needed.

David said he chose the route in part to create a unique riding experience different from his previous trips. It was partially inspired by the Vikings and Norse lands, which eventually culminated in the trip’s title — The Norseman’s Passage.

It will mostly cover the northern part of America and cross into Canada in a few sections.

“It’s to see a whole other part of the country,” David said. “It gives you a different perspective on life, and it’s the best way to see the diversity of America.

You see America in all of its beauty, because you’re really immersed in the land…

“It’s patriotism in its purist form.

You’re with Americans, traversing through many different climates, cultures, peoples — rural areas, suburban areas, urban areas. You see the whole mix, the good, the bad and the ugly.

But you also see the whole beauty of the land and its people.”

A minivan will tag along in case of emergencies and the crew will be blogging periodically about their progress.

Governor speaks to Greater North Fulton Chamber

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp recounted the accomplishments of the 2019 legislative session to a packed house April 26 at the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

Kemp largely focused on nonpartisan issues like raising the budget for teacher pay and school security, hurricane relief and fighting sex trafficking and gang violence.

However, he did mention two of the more controversial pieces of legislation passed during his first legislative session: Medicaid waivers and abortion restrictions.

“I signed, quite a while ago now, the Patients First Act, to craft a Georgia-centric healthcare system that will help lower insurance premiums, expand access to care and improve health outcomes for our families,” he said. “We passed the LIFE act to protect the innocent and the unborn.”

Given the audience, Kemp focused on the strength of the economy and importance of business development to the state.

“I want to thank you all for your strong support and being part of the Georgia economy and for what you do putting your efforts into your small business or the companies you’re working for,” Kemp said. “In my eyes, the folks that are members of the Chamber of Commerce and are involved in the operations and support of local chambers, that is literally where the rubber meets the road.”

SK Innovations building a $1.7 billion factory in Jackson County, which is expected to add 2,000 jobs, and California-based Plastics Express building a new base in Pooler, Ga., bringing a great deal of new business to the Savannah port.

Kemp said he will continue to focus on business development and take on adoption and foster care reform.

“As you can tell, we’ve accomplished a lot in our first 100 days of my term,” Kemp said. “I want you to know we are not resting on our laurels and we are

just getting started.”

After his speech, Kemp was fed questions. Asked about President Donald Trump’s recent visit to the state to attend a conference on the opioid crisis, Kemp commended the president for his work at the federal level and highlighted work being done by the state.

Asked about Amazon, Kemp said the state would not be chasing “HQ2,” or a new headquarters, but that he was confident Amazon will continue to grow its regional offices in Georgia.

On the subject of east-west connec-

tivity in North Fulton, Kemp said he was open to innovative, market-based solutions to transit.

“We have a great problem and a bad problem in the metro area with traffic,” Kemp said. “We’re growing so fast it’s hard to outbuild that growth when you look at road and bridge problems, so we’ve got to start thinking outside the box.”

Back then, there was a push from high-level officials in the North Fulton area to extend MARTA rail up to Windward Parkway. They even had a funding mechanism in place for the more than $5 billion project. The problem was that when it was brought up, the only people that rallied were those who opposed it. And I can tell you as someone who once covered local politics as a reporter, and as a casual observer over the last 20 years, the only time people tend to rally is when they are opposed to something. You never really see folks rally for something these days. I guess it’s easier to say no to something in

exchange for some magical solution than it is to stand up for something.

Four or five years ago, we had a way to extend rail and vocal voters, and then their elected officials said no.

I’m not exactly sure that this is the way this express lane idea went down, but from what it looks like, it seems that bus rapid transit is the “next best thing” to the rail-expansion idea.

The plan calls for two express lanes to be built in each direction between the North Springs MARTA station and McGinnis Ferry Road. Then for one express lane in each direction north from there to McFarland Parkway. The lanes would run mostly between the current north/south lanes with bus rapid transit stops at North Springs MARTA, Holcomb Bridge Road, North Point Mall, Old Milton Parkway and Windward Parkway.

I had State Sen. Brandon Beach on my radio podcast last week. He has chaired the Senate’s Transportation Committee for the last couple of years and was excited about bus rapid transit.

“This is going to be high-end. The buses will be nice – they’ll have wifi and it will be a very nice experience for the rider,” he said.

The benefit of bus rapid transit is that there isn’t as much of an up-front cost to get it running as there is with heavy rail. So if you cannot have heavy rail, it’s the next best thing.

Most people who I’ve talked to who have seen these plans, or heard about it, are thrilled that something is happening. But there are some vocal people who still want heavy rail and have no interest in seeing any more asphalt laid down. The problem is that it took years for discussion to finally brew up in North Fulton to the point where anyone with any significance would talk openly about

MARTA and GDOT are predicting that riders will be riding on these express lanes by 2025.

Downsizing can really mean simplifying

After 14 years in the same home with five children coming and going, our family made the move to downsize (or more accurately, simplify). We wanted lock and go, newer and easier. So, we began by assessing our needs in terms of location, space, amenities and lifestyle, and began looking at what might fit those needs. At the same time, we evaluated at our current home for repairs/critical upgrades. Given my 15 years of real estate experience, I knew what had to be done. Working with a good Realtor well in advance of any home transition is critical. You’ll want to spend your home sale prep money wisely.

In terms of decluttering, that was the most time-consuming step of all. I worked months in advance and every

time I thought I was making progress, I swear the “to-do” pile would grow. It is easy to get overwhelmed at this stage so, don’t hesitate to hire a professional (organizer). Also, I have found on-line garage JONES sales and NextDoor very helpful but be careful not to overprice your “beloved stuff”.

Once we were organized, we could pull the trigger on our new home purchase and home sale.

Again, do not try to walk this tightrope by yourself. It can get complicated and harry fast with two simultaneous contracts, contingencies, inspections, timing, temporary housing, etc. so, do yourself a favor and hire a full-time, experienced Realtor to help navigate this journey. Once, you arrive at your down-sized (simplified) destination, it is heaven! I help folks move to this fun next stage every day.

This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internet-connected device, or set routines through your home automation service.

• Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth.

While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. Not only will you be alerted when the system is disarmed, you can deactivate this code once you return.

4 myths about seller’s markets

Atlanta enjoyed a seller’s market for much of 2018, and many expect Rawlings that trend to continue into 2019. Add to that, a healthy increase in property values over the past several years, and it is little wonder that many Atlanta area homeowners are looking to cash in on some of their newly acquired equity.

That said, many sellers have some misguided assumptions and expectations about what it means to sell a home in this type of market and, as a result, they often make mistakes that can delay their sale or prevent them from making the most of their market value. If you are thinking about putting your Atlanta home on the market this year, let’s begin by dispelling four common real estate myths about seller’s markets so you can enter the process with a clear perspective.

Myth #1: I can get whatever price I ask for my home.

When demand outweighs supply in the real estate market, many homeowners assume they can price their home well above the acceptable market value and buyers will simply pay it. In reality, savvy buyers know what your home is actually worth, and they are likely to resent your presumption if you overprice it just because you think you can. No one responds well to price gouging. You still might get more than your asking price if multiple people want your home and they engage in a bidding war. Just let the buyers be the ones to start upping the offers — don’t presume to do it for them. Be sensitive to the market and price your home accordingly.

Myth #4: My home is guaranteed to sell quickly.

No matter how strong the market is, there are still no guarantees. A home’s time on the market can be affected by many factors, not just high demand and there may be legitimate reasons why your home stays on the market longer than average. Don’t be discouraged if your home doesn’t sell immediately.

Local baseball squads begin postseason play

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The GHSA state baseball playoffs began April 24 with 11 local teams competing in the postseason.

Milton sweeps Rockdale Co. (11-1, 13-1) Milton advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a dominant sweep of Rockdale County April 24. The Eagles racked up 24 runs in the doubleheader while holding Rockdale to just five hits.

Milton’s bats were hot early with the Eagles driving in six runs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1. The Eagles plated five more in the fourth inning and won the run-rule shortened game in five innings.

The Eagles offensive success continued in Game 2 with 15 hits and 13 runs.

Kristian Campbell and Curt McDonnell homered in Game 1, and Jack Rhodes hit a two-run shot in Game 2.

Josh Carrico had four total RBIs, Mitch Landon batted 3-5 with two RBIs and two walks, and Stephen Michaels was 3-6 with three RBIs in the series.

Dylan Matela threw a five-inning complete Game 1, allowing two hits and one earned run with 10 strikeouts. Tyler McLoughlin earned the win in Game 2, allowing two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts and two walks.

Milton will host the winner of Norcross/Mill Creek in the second round slated to begin May 2.

Forsyth Central sweeps South Gwinnett (15-0, 8-1) Forsyth Central had no troubles dispatching South Gwinnett to advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning of Game 1 and piled on the offense with 11 combined runs in the third and fourth. The game was called on the run rule after the bottom of the fourth.

Central’s Game 1 offense was highlighted by a Jacob Ryan grand slam in the third inning. Ryan batted in seven runs in the opening game. He also got the start on the mound and pitched a four-inning complete game allowing three hits with four strikeouts.

Though Game 2 was more competitive, the Bulldogs still racked up eight runs while surrendering just three hits to take the series with an 8-1 win.

Mitchell Gross earned the Game 2 win, allowing two hits and no runs in six

innings with 12 strikeouts. Will Robbins relieved Gross in the seventh, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in Game 2 with a five-run fourth inning behind five hits, including a three-run double from AJ Fiechter. With Gross dominating on the mound, Central added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth. South Gwinnett’s only run came on a home run in the seventh.

Central will go on the road in the second round to face Region 6 champions North Gwinnett.

North Forsyth sweeps Archer (4-1, 2-1) North Forsyth earned two extra-inning wins to sweep Archer April 24.

North’s Anthony DiMola won a pitcher’s battle in Game 1 with an impressive 10-inning performance allowing seven hits and one earned run.

The contest remained scoreless until the 10th inning when Miles Hartsfield hit a two-run double. Garrett Staton and Holton Payne sacrificed to put the Raiders up 4-0.

Archer compiled three hits in the bottom of the 10th, including an RBI single, but DiMola ended the threat with his sixth strikeout to give North the Game 1 win.

Game 2 was another low-scoring affair, but the Raiders used a walk-off hit and another strong pitching performance to take the series.

Brody Westbrooks threw an eight-inning complete game, allowing eight hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts. Archer’s only run came in the top of the first on an RBI single.

North tied the contest in the second inning with help from the Tigers. An Archer error put Carter Mullikin on base and another error allowed him to score.

The contest remained tied at 1-1 in the eighth when Holton Payne hit a walk-off double to secure the Raiders’ series win.

North faces Region 7 champions Parkview on the road in the second round.

Grayson downs Lambert in three games (6-2, 4-8, 8-0) After a late season fight to earn a playoff berth, Lambert took Region 8 champions Grayson to three games but were shut out by the Rams in the decisive game April 25.

Grayson opened Game 3 with five runs in the first inning and held the Longhorns to just two hits throughout the contest. Lambert starting pitcher Asher McAllister was pulled after just 0.2 innings after surrendering five hits, including a home run and five earned runs.

Grayson scored four runs in the first two innings of Game 1 and went on to take the 6-2 win. The Rams jumped out to an early lead in the Game 2, but Lambert knocked in five runs in the fifth inning to power its 8-4 win.

River Ridge defeats Cambridge in decisive Game 3 (6-7, 2-1, 9-8) Cambridge and River Ridge exchanged walk-off wins in their April 24 doubleheader to set up a decisive Game 3 April 25 which ended in heartbreak for the Bears.

Cambridge led 8-0 after five innings and starting pitcher Evan Pollifrone was working a no-hitter. However, River Ridge came alive in the bottom of the

sixth and used multiple hits and a crucial Cambridge fielding error to score nine runs for a comeback win.

The Bears rallied back from a 5-2 deficit and tied Game 1 in the sixth inning to set up a walk-off single from Danny DeSousa in the bottom of the seventh. Blake Renner pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with 10 strikeouts.

River Ridge flipped the script in Game 2 with a 2-1 walk-off win in extra innings.

The Bears tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh with a Cody Rech RBI single, but River Ridge hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to score the winning run.

The Bears compiled a 12-4 record in Region 7-AAAAAA and earned their first playoff home series by securing the No. 2 seed.

Blessed Trinity sweeps Ridgeland (11-1, 16-0) Blessed Trinity blasted Ridgeland for 27 runs to sweep its opening round series April 24.

The Titans scored at least two runs in all five innings of the run-rule shortened Game 1. Trey Baker, CJ Abrams and Steele Chambers all had two RBIs. Baker knocked in his RBIs with a home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hayden Grier batted 3-3 with an RBI. While BT lit up the scoreboard in Game 1, starter Eric Moore earned the win allowing four hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts for the fiveinning complete game.

BT upped its run total in Game 2 with 16 runs on 14 hits.

Abrams led the Titans, batting 3-3, including two doubles and a triple, with three RBIs and a walk. Chambers went 2-2 with an RBI, Ryan Davis batted 2-3 with two RBIs, and Jake Smith had two RBIs on two hits in the lopsided win.

Starter DJ Radtke earned the win, allowing no hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Will Macolino allowed one hit in one inning in the run-rule shortened game.

The Titans will take on the winner of Stephens County/LaGrange in the second round.

Allatoona sweeps Alpharetta (2-1, 12-0) Allatoona got the better of Alpharetta for the second straight year in the playoffs with the Raiders dropping both games of its April 24 doubleheader.

The Raiders tied Game 1 in the third inning on two walks and two hit batters, and the contest went into extra innings still tied at 1-1 in a pitchers’ duel.

With Cole Hamel on the mound for the last 1.2 innings, Allatoona put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth. The Bucs took advantage with a walk-off double to secure the first game of the series.

After a low-scoring Game 1, Allatoona lit up the Raiders for 11 hits to take the series with a 12-0 win. The Bucs scored just five earned runs, but four Alpharetta errors allowed Allatoona to plate 12 and end the game in the fifth inning by run rule.

Alpharetta starter Sam Stratton allowed seven hits and four earned runs in two innings. Jacob Lassiat gave up three hits and one earned run in one inning, and Branden Magill closed out the final two innings allowing one hit.

The Raiders were held to just three hits in Game 2.

Denmark sweeps Northwest Whitfield (8-5, 11-2) Denmark earned a sweep of Northwest Whitfield April 24 to advance to the second round in their inaugural season.

A late-game surge of runs made for an exciting Game 1 with Denmark plating four runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and the game, 8-5.

Denmark took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, but Northwest Whitfield tied in the bottom half with three hits, including an RBI single. Denmark responded with a five-hit rally in the seventh with Carson Russel hitting a two-out, tworun double. Trevor Bryk and Nic Ferrer then stretched the lead to 8-4 with RBI singles.

Jack Kream relieved starter Dalton Hansard in the bottom the frame and got off to an inauspicious start with Northwest Whitfield’s leadoff batter hitting a home run. However, Kream had a strikeout and forced two groundouts to end the potential comeback.

Hansard earned the Game 1 win, allowing nine hits and four earned runs.

While the first game of the doubleheader was a back-and-forth affair, Denmark took an early lead in Game 2 and racked up 12 hits to take the 11-2 win.

Matthew Cassandra batted 3-4 in

Game 2 with two RBIs, a home run and a double, and Logan DeLong went 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Danes’ offense.

Starting pitcher Jack Whitlock earned the win, allowing three hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

Denmark will go on the road against St. Pius X in the second round.

St. Francis sweeps Eagles Landing Christian Academy (9-0, 16-1) St. Francis made quick work of Eagles Landing Christian with a twogame sweep April 25 at home.

Knights’ starting pitcher Will Clark threw a perfect game in the run-rule shortened Game 1. Clark struck out five batters in five innings.

With Clark holding ELCA batters at bay, the Knights’ bats went to work.

Brooks Mitchell hit a three-run home run and Clark, Kyle Bork, Bennett Drake and Griffin Leadbetter had RBIs. The Knights had another dominant performance in Game 2, scoring 16 runs on 10 hits while allowing ELCA one hit in four innings.

Pinecrest Academy and First Presbyterian Day split their April 25 doubleheader to force a decisive Game 3 on April 26.

FPD managed 10 hits in Game 1 but were held to four runs by Pinecrest’s Patrick O’Rourke who pitched a complete game.

The Paladins took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Jay Sorohan and added two more runs in the seventh with an O’Rourke RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Mason Carter.

Trailing 6-3, FPD had three hits in the bottom of the seventh with a run batted in, but a double play by Pinecrest ended the comeback threat.

After taking Game 1, Pinecrest and FPD put on an offensive showcase, combining for 29 runs and 27 hits. However, the Paladins came up short in the high-scoring affair, 17-12.

FPD plated eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 14-4 lead. Though the Paladins scored eight runs in the fifth through seventh inning, FPD’s lead was proved insurmountable and forced a do-ordie Game 3.

FPD’s bats were hot again in Game 3 with the Vikings scoring 14 runs on 13 hits.

Knights erase eight-run deficit, down Cambridge in decisive Game 3

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge looked poised to earn a playoff series win for the first time at home April 25 with an 8-0 lead after five innings of the decisive Game 3 against River Ridge.

Starting pitcher Evan Pollifrone had a no-hitter working, Cambridge’s bats had been effective and River Ridge appeared shaky with multiple errors allowing the Bears to rack up added runs.

But then it all unraveled.

The Knights finally caught up to Pollifrone and used four hits to cut the deficit to 8-4 with no outs.

Michael Polk relieved Pollifrone and earned a quick strikeout, but a Cambridge fielding error allowed another run to cross the plate. The Knights then earned a hit with a bunt tapped beyond Polk to load the bases. River Ridge kept its momentum and sent their dugout into a frenzy with a three-run double to complete the comeback and added another RBI single to take a 9-8 lead in the sixth.

After leading from the first inning, the Bears were suddenly trailing with just three outs to work with. Though

Mitch Fleming reached on a dropped third strike, the Bears could not respond to the Knights’ comeback and the series and season came to an end.

“It just seemed like a sleeping beast woke up out of [River Ridge],” Cambridge head coach Evan Tieles said. “We knew they could put some runs up, and that’s why you never feel comfortable with any kind of a lead against a team like that.

It’s never what you expect to happen, but everything started going their way.

They had some good at bats, they found holes, made in-game adjustments and they just ran with it.”

The devastating nature of the loss was apparent in the Bears’ dugout following the game.

“There’s not much you tell the guys after a game like that,” Tieles said. “You just look back and reflect on the season, the life lessons and hope it was a good experience playing high school baseball.”

Despite the crushing loss, Tieles said the Bears’ can still hold their heads high following a 12-4 record in the highlycompetitive Region 7-AAAAAA gauntlet and for capturing the program’s first home playoff series.

They gave everything they could. Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way at the end of it, but it’s a season to be proud of for sure.”

The second-year head coach was also quick to praise his seven seniors who saw their high school careers end Thursday night.

Annual John Hunter Regatta attracts fans, rowing clubs ROSWELL, Ga— The 33rd Annual John Hunter Regatta was held on March 28 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park with over 42 clubs from around the country and totaling over 385 entries. It was a 2-day event that many teams considered to be an important start to their spring race season. Georgia Tech and Saint Andrew Rowing Club, who share a boathouse and training facility, co-sponsored the competition. College clubs practiced on Friday and raced on Saturday, while the High School programs have a full day of racing on Sunday.

Cambridge took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 3 with Jackson Woods hustling out a ground ball to allow a run to score. With River Ridge protesting the call at first, Cambridge scored another run with heads-up base running.

A little league play allowed the Bears to take a 4-0 lead in the second inning when Justin Hozman laid down a sacrifice bunt. River Ridge had a throwing error to first to allow one run to score and

headed the orchestration and coordination of hundreds of volunteers to fill over 500 positions across three days of activities. This included driving boats, running concessions and judging. “[Our athletes and their families] really take pride in coming back year after year to help make the John Hunter a success for the next generation of athletes,” Renee Stevens, President of St. Andrew Rowing Club, said. “Many alumni return to this amazing venue with their new families to share their love for the sport.”

Hozman rounded the bases and crossed home following another Knights’ throwing error to third on the same play. Ryan Todd hit a two-run double and Ross Friedrick drove in a run to put the Bears up 7-0 in the fourth inning.

Nicho Armstrong drove in a run in the top of the fifth with a double, his third hit of the game.

Pollifrone pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and five earned runs with a walk and a strikeout in Game 3. Polk went 0.2 innings allowing two earned runs off three hits with two walks.

Cambridge took Game 1 in walk-off fashion, rallying back from a 5-2 deficit to set up a game-winning single from Danny DeSousa in the bottom of the seventh inning.

River Ridge flipped the script in Game 2, earning a 2-1 win with a walkoff hit in the eighth inning to force the decisive Game 3.

Roswell Rotary hears from Laws of Life contest winners

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Each year, the Georgia Rotary Clubs encourage students across the state to write about their core personal values or ideals. And on April 25, the Roswell Rotary Club announced this year’s winners and invited the students to read from their essays at the club’s meeting in Roswell Area Park.

“Simply put, ‘Laws of Life’ are words to live by,” said Roswell Rotary Club member Vivian Bankston. “It could be a family saying, it could be a line of poetry, or it could be a famous quotation.”

This year, more than 44,000 students from 69 Georgia high schools entered the contest. Over $21,000 in cash prizes were awarded to winning students.

The number of participants represent fewer than 10 percent of the state’s high school student population, and Rotary

hopes to have more participate in the coming years, Bankston said.

The essay contest is part of the Rotary Clubs’ character-building effort.

Bankston said that research from Clemson University has shown BANKSTON character changes stick when people focus on their values and emotions and are supported by their family and community.

“Character education is important for the whole community,” Bankston said. “Everyone benefits, and everyone learns.”

The essay contest also helps adults become more in tune with what their children and students are facing in schools in the modern age, Bankston said.

“Many are challenged by depression, by bullying, by violence and drug abuse in the home and at school,” Bankston said. “Many are challenged by economic instability. And many make very tough ethical decisions.”

The essay contest can help make a small step toward positive life changes.

“Character education programs such as the Laws of Life contest challenge students to focus on positive character values and to share those through the process of writing,” Bankston said.

Roswell Rotary Club works with two high schools for the Laws of Life essay contest: Independence High School and Roswell High School.

Representatives from Independence High School were unable to attend the meeting because students were busy with district exams.

The school will open with a charter class of 450 freshman who will comprise

the first graduating class in 2024. A new class of freshman will enroll each year until the school reaches its target enrollment of 1,800 students in 2023.

The application process opens in October, and a lottery will be held if applications exceed the number of seats available. The school is open to enrollment for students from across North Fulton; a second STEM high school will open in South Fulton in 2021.

Tim Duncan appointed principal of Innovation Academy Tim Duncan, the longtime principal at Chattahoochee High School, has been appointed by the Fulton County Board of Education to be the first principal at the Innovation Academy.

Duncan will assume full responsibility of the new school at the end of this school year, and he will spend the next year preparing the school, staff and prospective students for the school’s opening in August 2020.

DUNCAN Chief Academic Officer Clifford Jones said Duncan was a natural fit for the high-profile position, bringing with him a long career as an educator, administrator and principal in the Fulton School System.

“I am excited about the depth of leadership he brings to Innovative Academy,” said Jones, citing Duncan’s resume which includes Principal of the Year in Fulton Schools. “He has been a part of this project from the beginning and is very excited to have a part in building the program.”

He noted Duncan was instrumental in creating a STEM-based curriculum at Chattahoochee, collecting multiple awards for the school along the way. At a higher level, Duncan has attended extensive training on the “design thinking” model which will serve as the curriculum base for Innovation Academy.

Duncan has been the principal of Chattahoochee High School since 2003, except for a three-year gap in 2015-2018 when he served as the district’s director of Capital Programs and Academics. Duncan received his bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees from the University of Georgia.

In the coming months, Duncan will be hiring the support staff, teacher leaders and other key positions to prepare for the August opening.

Security footage shows woman stealing clothing ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating an April 16 incident in which a woman was seen shoplifting children’s shirts from the Dillard’s at North Point Circle.

A surveillance camera operator called police that day when she saw the incident in the store’s security footage. The footage showed a woman grab a few children’s shirts at 10 a.m. and conceal herself behind a clothing rack. She appeared to place something in her bag before leaving the store.

The footage then showed that the woman returned a few minutes later, hid five shirts in her bag and left the store without paying.

Backpack removed during Easter event ROSWELL, Ga. — A woman called police April 14 after she noticed her backpack was missing during an Easter event at Northbrook United Methodist Church.

The woman had left the bag in the church offices. It contained an iPhone, two prescription pills, cash, credit cards and makeup.

The woman cancelled her cards before calling police. When she attempted to use the “Find my iPhone” feature, she saw that the phone had been turned off.

That night, we enjoyed a formal catered guest lecture on T.S. Elliot by a famous Elliot scholar. The next day, we showed up at what was supposed to be a very small and private “Socratic seminar “on a different literary topic. We discovered it by accident when Carl had noticed a posting on a scrap of paper pinned on a bulletin board. All it had said was “This is Water discussion,“ and gave a location and time. So, we went. What we found turned out to be a professor and four students meeting in a small conference room.

But “no worries.” The surprised professor invited us to stay and participate — and we did for several hours.

The discussion was about David Foster

Wallace’s commencement speech “This is Water,” which Carl discovered years ago and shared with me. I have watched the YouTube video of his speech many times and it is to this day, one of my more treasured possessions.

Near the end of the discussion, one of the students — the one who until that point had said not a single word the whole time — spoke.

“Wallace made two points,” he observed. The first was that our default is to see the world through a self-centered “me” filter that colors everything — what we see and understand and what we don’t see. “Because we look through that filter, we tend to only take note of things that impact us — the “big” things and not so much things that impact others. “ The student noted that making the decision to not focus just on ourselves is a conscious, moral choice, a decision we make every day and every hour. “It

is important that we understand this because,” he said, “most of our lives are actually made up of these smaller, seemingly mundane less important moments — the points in-between. “ He couldn’t have been older than maybe 22, if that.

No one spoke for what seemed like a very long time.

As we flew home, I couldn’t stop thinking about our visit. I took inventory of the two nights and three days we spent with Carl at his university. We did a lot together. We learned a lot together in those few days.

We met impassioned professors. We revisited an old library that welcomed us like we were long lost children. We felt the embrace of a long dead industrialist. And while we did hurry to pack in as much as we could together, we walked slowly enough to have noticed and read a scrap of paper pinned to a bulletin board — and experience the points in-between.
