Police arrest Roswell teen for selling stolen golf clubs ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a teenager Feb. 18 after the Play It Again Sports on Mansell Road recognized the golf clubs he was trying to sell were stolen.

The original owner of the golf clubs had come into the store four days earlier and reported the equipment, valued at $3,500, missing.

When the teenager, later identified as an 18-year-old from Roswell, brought the golf clubs to the counter, an employee recognized them as the missing clubs.

The teenager was arrested without incident.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man Feb. 20 after officers found him carrying heroin and in violation of probation.

Police spotted a car at 8 p.m. on Ga. 400 northbound identifying the driver as a man with an active warrant for felony probation violation from Forsyth County for heroin possession. The car, they said, had run a red light.

Officers noticed the driver holding a syringe cap with a white substance.

The man, later identified as 22-yearold Eric Salomone of Cumming, admitted the substance was heroin.

He was arrested without incident on

The money was sent before the owners recognized the email as fraudulent. The owners received another email the same day asking for a $285,000 wire transfer, but they did not comply.

Man caught on video shoplifting cigarettes ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are looking for a man suspected of shoplifting several packages of cigarettes from the Walgreens on Windward Parkway.

Police arrived at the store at 1:40 a.m. on Feb. 20 after an alarm was tripped.

Security footage showed a man break through the doors by using a bar. He then jumped behind the counter, filled a bag with cigarettes and left on foot heading north.

Identity fraud discovered during apartment application ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman met with police Feb. 21 after she discovered she was the victim of identity fraud.

The woman said she learned of the fraud when she applied for an apartment but was denied because of some discrepancies on her credit. She did some digging and found several instances of fraudulent activity.

The woman told police she lost her Social Security card in 2013 and believes that someone has been using her identity since then.

Bikes reported stolen from apartment complex ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Feb. 19 incident in which two bikes were stolen from an apartment

complex on Masters Way. The bike owners left that morning at 10 a.m. and returned at 9 p.m., when they noticed that the bikes were missing.

The bikes had been chained together to the bottom floor hallway handrail.

The rear basket attachment to one of the bikes was left in the hallway. There were no surveillance cameras in the area.

Traffic violation stop yields wanted person ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a teenager wanted for forgery on Feb. 17 after he was identified during a traffic stop.

Police stopped the car at 8 p.m. after officers saw it make an illegal left turn.

The passenger was flagged in the system for a warrant.

Police talked to the passenger and found a fake $100 bill on his person and in the car’s glove compartment. The passenger, identified as an 18-year-old from Dacula, was arrested without incident.

Thieves take electronics in residential burglary ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Feb. 21 incident in which several electronics items were stolen from a house on Jon Scott Drive.

The property owner said she left at 9:30 a.m. and returned shortly after 1 p.m., when she noticed several items missing from her house. Four TVs and two Alexa Dots were missing.

The doors were locked before the woman left, and police said there were no signs of forced entry. There were no surveillance cameras in the area.

Alpharetta mayor salutes past leaders

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Mayor Jim Gilvin said Alpharetta’s growing success as the envy of the region can be tracked, in part, to the fledgling businesses that united 25 years ago to form what is today the Alpharetta Business Association.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 250 business and civic leaders at the annual ABA State of the City Address at the Hotel at Avalon Feb. 26, the mayor recounted his years in city government and all the people who helped drive Alpharetta to where it is today.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has,” said Gilvin, citing renowned anthropologist and lecturer Margaret Meade.

“That’s powerful because it’s true,” the mayor said. “When you think back, any change that happens begins with one or two or a few small groups gathered together to make a difference in this world.”

The mayor outlined four priorities he said he hopes to focus on in the coming year.

First, he said, he wants Alpharetta to remain one of the safest cities in the nation by maintaining a well-equipped and well-trained public safety department.

“If the city doesn’t keep you, your families, businesses, employees and everyone else who comes to this city to enjoy what we have, safe, the rest of what we do doesn’t matter,” he said.

Another highlight this year, Gilvin said, will be transportation. Already, the city is engaged in tens of millions of dollars in road projects funded through the transportation sales tax. While those

projects will continue, the city is also working with the state and regional planners to bring rapid transit bus service to the area, he said.

The managed lanes along Ga. 400 will be a game-changer for the city, Gilvin said, allowing greater opportunities for commuters.

Gilvin also stressed the need for continued economic growth without sacrificing the city’s quality of life. Part of the focus, he said, will be on retaining the businesses already in place by opening channels of communication to find new ways the city can help foster their growth.

Another focus, Gilvin said, will be to continue efforts to revitalize the North Point Mall area. Plans are already in place to convert the old Sears site into a mixed-use complex with residential, retail and greenspace. With this initiative, he said, the city hopes other property owners in the area will repurpose the land, break up all the asphalt, add greenspace and turn North Point into its own, vibrant economic ecosystem.

Along those lines, the mayor said he is committed to preserving and expanding the city’s park system. He noted the city has recently mapped out plans to provide the last missing piece of land that will extend the Big Creek Greenway into Forsyth County.

Gilvin spent most of his time paying tribute to civic and business leaders of the past who made Alpharetta what it is.

The reason Alpharetta is special, Gilvin said, is because, decades ago, residents were able to come together and build a place where people from all over the world wanted to be, a place that brought people here to raise their families, build businesses and build a community.

Roswell begins discussion on mixed use amendments

“We’re often so caught up in our lives and the things that are going on in our daily business that we forget to reflect on where we were, how fortunate we are to be in this community at this time,” said Gilvin, who first visited the area in the early ’90s.

Back in 1994, when a group of downtown business owners formed the Downtown Alpharetta Business Association, the city was a much different place, Gilvin said.

“It was still a great place to live, a suburban community,” the mayor said. “It had a few restaurants, but it didn’t have the energy that we have today.”

Soon, things began to take off with the opening of North Point Mall, he said. Residential and commercial development took hold, and the city began to change, he said.

“One of the places in the city that really wasn’t changing was downtown,” Gilvin said. “If you went to downtown, they weren’t the shiny new thing anymore.”

Rundown shopping centers and vacant buildings followed.

“But because a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens wanted to change that, we have a beautiful downtown now – City Center,” Gilvin said.

Now, he said, the city is awakening to a new vitality that he hopes to continue into the future.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell City Council is moving forward to address building type standards in the Unified Development Code.

On Feb. 25, the City Council voted 5-1, with Councilman Matthew Tyser opposed, to initiate amendments to the code regarding mixed use.

The amendments, as currently written, add two requirements to the code.

One states that the mixed use zoning classification requires a minimum of two different building types for the district.

One of the building types must be commercial unless one of the buildings is mixed use, said Planning and Zoning Director Jackie Diebel.

The other amendment to the Unified Development Code removes the townhouse zoning type completely in the commercial heavy zoning district. This would essentially prohibit construction of a new townhome in a commercial heavy district, Diebel said.

Commercial heavy districts include the stretch along Alpharetta Highway from Mansell Road north to the Alpharetta city limits.

Councilman Mike Palermo said he had several concerns with the amendments as they are currently written.

He said his main concern is that although the amendment states there must be at least two building types, that doesn’t prevent applicants from filling a development with primarily residential.

Palermo added that he wants the council to consider adding an amendment, similar to Alpharetta’s, where a minimum of 25 percent of a development must be non-residential. If the development has less than 25 percent non-residential, it should go before the council for a conditional use and a public hearing for community input, Palermo said.

Councilman Matthew Tyser said he was concerned about unintended consequences that a 25 percent rule could bring.

“Zoning codes don’t encourage people to build things — the marketplace encourages people to build things,” Tyser said. “If people weren’t buying townhomes, people wouldn’t be building townhomes.”

get around a 25 percent rule by building only townhomes instead of a mixed-use development, no matter how small the non-residential portion would be. We might only get townhomes if we don’t allow a smaller percentage of mixed use to sometimes be built, Tyser said.

Palermo said he agreed with Tyser’s assessment of the marketplace but added that the problem, as he sees it, is that Roswell has overweighed itself with residential.

“I want a balanced city,” Palermo said.

Councilman Matt Judy asked the City Council to consider taking the item back to committee before voting on it and figure out, “what we need as Roswell, not Alpharetta or any other city.”

He added Palermo was not at the committee meeting where the amendments were first discussed.

Mayor Lori Henry urged the City Council to make a decision instead of scuttling the discussion. She said she could not support doing nothing for the next few years on this issue.

The amendments passed initiation as written and will be discussed in the next Community Development and Transportation Committee Meeting, which is slated for Wednesday, March 27 at 8 a.m.

Alpharetta approves redevelopment plan at North Point Sears site City says project will spark revival of major corridor

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A major step in revitalizing North Point Mall won City Council approval Feb. 25, when officials signed off on a plan that will transform the abandoned Sears site into a mixeduse development.

Brookfield Properties wants to transform the vacant building and parking lot area into a modern complex that would include new, freestanding retail and restaurants, greenspace and 300 apartments. The project would also adjust North Point Circle, which surrounds the property, to accommodate a multi-use trail system for pedestrians and cyclists with tie-ins to nearby trails and the Big Creek Greenway.

The vote was 6-1, with Councilman Ben Burnett voting in opposition. Burnett did not speak on the subject.

Everyone else was less shy.

Councilman Dan Merkel called the decision a “game changer” for North Point and the city. He said he thinks the project will kick start a wave of property revitalization in the area.

Indeed, several nearby mall tenants praised the plan, saying the energy it will create will radiate outward.

Sheila Wilson, store manager for North Point Macy’s, told council members that Brookfield’s initiative has kindled a spirit of investment at her business.

“This allows the opportunity for Macy’s to invest again in this location,” she said. “As you know, our company invests in mall locations that are being invested in. And, Macy’s believes in this location so much that we’re investing

Wilson said Macy’s plans to open a “Backstage” store within its current location this April. Plans are also underway to make improvements to the property, she said.

“To be able to live and work and play in the same community will mean so much to our colleagues and our store,” she said. “The ability for us to hire locally will improve greatly.”

Commercial interests at North Point have taken a hit in recent years with the closures of giant retailers Sears and Toys R Us. Strip malls in the area are also seeing strain, according to a study

by Kimley Horn consultants, which assisted the city in drawing up a Livable Centers Initiative plan in 2018.

field, said that long before Avalon and City Center, North Point Mall was the economic driver for the city. Over its 26 years of operation, the mall has accounted for tens of millions of dollars in taxes and remains the city’s biggest property tax component, she said.

Brookfield’s letter of intent states that the luxury apartments will occupy three 4-story buildings and will include a swimming pool, courtyards, fitness center, business center, dog wash, clubroom, garages, leasing office and pet park.

In addition to the multi-use trail, outdoor amenities include a rock climbing wall, Spanish Steps, athletic fields, parks, overlooks, playground, event lawn/space, bocce garden and splash pad.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said the project is

just what North Point needs. He said he was on the City Council when Avalon was cleared for construction more than six years ago, and everyone was concerned with the effect it would have on North Point.

[We] knew that we were going to have to be proactive in watching that corridor,” Gilvin said, adding that the city’s planning staff has been working for years to come up with a plan tailored for the area.

“Our staff has worked… to come up with a plan that would give us something in that area that was going to convert the North Point corridor into something special, because we don’t just want another development in Alpharetta,” he said. “We consider this a community that deserves better.”

Alpharetta mounts second battle with Legislature City says new bills would lay waste to building codes

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — For the second time in as many weeks, Alpharetta has scolded the Georgia Legislature for what it likens to sticking its nose in city business.

At its Feb. 25 meeting, the City Council adopted a resolution opposing bills they say wrest control over building design standards from cities.

The legislation, House Bill 302 and Senate Bill 172, would prohibit local governments from regulating building design elements in single- or doublefamily dwellings.

“Thomas Jefferson said ‘the government closest to the people serves the people best.’” Councilman John Hipes said. “We are the government closest to the people in Alpharetta.”

The city charges that the legislation “undermines self-determination of citizens” to establish community standards to address specific quality-of-life issues.

These standards, the city argues, pre-

serve home values and protect property owners from incompatible development.

The resolution further argues that local officials are elected to make decisions that reflect their residents’ wishes about the look and feel of their community, and that the proposed bills would transfer that power to others, including real estate developers and homebuilders.

Similar resolutions have been adopted by Johns Creek, Dunwoody and Forsyth County.

Hipes said the same legislators pushing the bills are the first ones to scream when the federal government mandates sweeping regulations that bite into states’ governance.

Alpharetta Councilman Donald Mitchell said the Legislature has proven its ability to foster bad taste, witnessed by its billboard legislation that permits adult-oriented advertising for motorists near the Florida state line. If these bills pass, he said, anyone could build a house constructed of cheap materials right next to homes with brick or stone.

Mitchell issued a message to the Legislature: “Pay attention to your citizens and do what we want instead of what you’re getting paid from the lobbyists to do,” he said.

This is the second consecutive meeting Alpharetta officials have leveled

sharp criticism at the General Assembly.

At their Feb. 18 meeting, City Council members accused legislators of selling out to telecom companies for introducing a bill that would provide the industry greater access to city right of way to install new 5G wireless equipment. The scolding came just months after Alpharetta spent the better part of a month and $33,000 in attorney’s fees crafting its own ordinance to accommodate the telecoms in an effort to maintain some local control over equipment placement.

That bill sailed through the House 170-1 — with all three members of Alpharetta’s House delegation voting in

favor — and is awaiting action in the Senate.

The building design legislation, however, has already drawn opposition from the local delegation. Rep. Chuck Martin said last week he plans to fight it on the floor, and he has already spoken with the House sponsors.

State Sen. John Albers has also come out opposed to the bill.

“I adamantly oppose Senate Bill 172,” Albers said. “Local control is critical to protecting our citizens and communities.”

Business coach suggests getting comfortable with the uncomfortable

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Many people hold back in business and in life when faced with something uncomfortable, but it can cost them opportunities to grow, according to Mark McGraw, sales coach and owner of Sandler Training.

Speaking at the Feb. 28 meeting of the Roswell Rotary Club in Roswell Area Park, McGraw encouraged people to get out of their comfort zone.

McGraw coaches business owners, salespeople and leaders on how to get more out of their business and life. Whenever people want someone to change, McGraw said it’s important to first figure out how to get the self to change.

McGraw said that one quote in particular resonates with him and his approach: “The quality of your life is largely determined by your ability to learn how to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.”

Too many people, he added, want things to change, but don’t want to change themselves or their approach.

It’s impossible to get different results that way.

McGraw boiled the issue down to what he called wimp junctures, when opportunities for change arise, but people tend to wimp out and choose the most comfortable option. In his business, McGraw works to manage how people react when confronted with wimp junctions.

He’s identified three important steps in that process.

The first is to become aware of the wimp junctions

when they arise and to make decisions before they come up.

He shared a personal story of his weight-loss journey as an example of how his philosophy can be applied in daily life. McGraw lost and has kept off 50 pounds in part by deciding, before he even walks into a restaurant, to have a healthy meal.

The second step is to master at least one technique or tool for making and sticking to a decision to change.

Several times during his weight-loss journey, McGraw said he was tempted by desserts, so he developed a way to deal with that temptation without wrecking his diet.

For example, McGraw said that he figured out that about 80 percent of the pleasure he derived from dessert came from the first bite. So he would at times indulge with one bite and then salt the rest of the dessert so that he wouldn’t be tempted to eat more later.

The third and final step is to be gutsy for five seconds at a time instead of striving to maintain perfection the entire time.

“In surviving a wimp junction, we don’t have to be gutsy all the time,” McGraw said. “We need to be gutsy five seconds at a time. It’s those little pivotal moments that make a difference for us, so that we can identify these moments, decide what we’re going to do and then have a moment of courage.”

McGraw ended with an observation — that the most successful people he’s seen are people who are willing to act despite how they feel at the moment.

Lawmakers close loophole on school bus law

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com A bill signed into law this month by Gov. Brian Kemp clarifies the rules of engagement between drivers and school buses when stopped to load and unload children.

Senate Bill 25 clears up the “unintended consequences” of House Bill 978 passed last year, which raised concerns about when drivers had to stop for school buses.

According to legal opinions, the old law in place could be interpreted to allow drivers to continue driving as long as they were on the opposite side of the roadway divided by only a turn lane.

The new legislation allows only drivers on the opposite side of a four-lane roadway to continue traveling only if the roadway is separated by a grass median, unpaved area, or physical barrier (concrete wall, guardrails, etc.). A center turn lane does not qualify as a median.

SB 25 was one of the first pieces of legislation tackled by lawmakers in the early days of the current Legislative Session and passed quickly and unanimously in both chambers.

Fulton County School officials praised the new law, which makes driver

expectations clear when approaching a stopped school bus.

“Fulton County Schools completely supports the new law’s clarification of when to stop for a school bus during the student loading and/or unloading process,” said Sam Ham, executive director of the district’s Transportation Department. “The [law] will allow school districts and the State DOE to better educate the motoring public when it is necessary to stop for the school bus, ultimately enhancing student safety.”

Lawmakers chose to keep in place the fine of $250 for violating the school bus stop law, passed under HB 978. Previously, the fine had been up to $1,000.

Construction overview shows challenges, successes in Fulton County School District Rising material costs, shrinking labor force strain system’s budget

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com The escalating cost of building new schools and renovating older ones is challenging the Fulton County School System as it tackles more than $230 million in current and planned projects in the coming months.

School officials, however, note efficient scheduling and realistic metrics keep the district on budget and on schedule despite the external challenges.

During a School Board work session in February, district officials outlined recent accomplishments, upcoming summer projects and the challenges and priorities of the five-year Capital Program which ends in 2022.

“The Capital Projects team will execute 49 renovations this summer and four [ongoing] large projects contracted at over $231 million,” said Deputy Superintendent of Operations Patrick Burke. “This is a big year coming up.”

This summer 20 area schools are slated for projects, including replacement of fire alarms and roofs, upgrades to security systems and general renovations to keep the schools fully functioning.

Last summer, projects were completed at 22 area schools. Those projects included moving Independence High School from Milton Center back to its original Roswell location and other smaller-scale projects, such as new playground equipment and media centers.

“Sometimes we do big, flashy projects that are really cool, and sometimes we do little projects that make all the difference [to students] and what we are most proud of,” said Barbara Colman, program manager for Jacobs Construction which oversees the district’s construction program.

The economic recovery has changed the landscape of construction, with greater demand for services competing with a diminished labor pool, and driving up costs.

Bill McCorkle, vice president with Evergreen Construction, told the board construction costs have been rising 5 to 6 percent since the economy came out of the recession in 2012.

He cited the examples of Johns Creek High School and Cambridge High school, similarly-designed schools built three years apart but at very different costs.

Johns Creek cost $56.6 million to build in 2007; Cambridge came in at

$43.3 million three years later at the peak of the recession in 2010. “[Cambridge represented] a 23 percent decrease in three years in a market that was deeply depressed…and remained that way for quite some time,” said McCorkle, whose firm specializes in school construction.

He noted the higher costs today reflect a correction in the industry, with costs returning to where the industry can maintain sustainability.

Margaret Rauber of Atlanta-based Winters Construction also briefed the board on the declining pool of qualified workers and its impact on construction.

“The manpower is absolutely a challenge for us in the region, and all major contractors are reporting staffing challenges,” Rauber said.

She noted the construction industry has not returned to the staffing levels seen prior to the downturn when many left for other opportunities. Additionally, the average age of the skilled construction worker is in the mid-50s, so many are headed to retirement.

Fulton School Board member Katha Stuart said the school system recognizes the need for construction skills, pointing to the program in place in the Roswell area. A curriculum in Construction Technology is in place at the elementary school leading all the way to high school to provide a deep understanding of the industry and its opportunities.

Board member Julia Bernath also encouraged the construction companies to offer internships to students to get them interested in the industry.

Roswell band students prepare for annual fundraiser

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell High School band members are gearing up for their annual M.A.R.C.H. fundraiser that will take place March 16.

M.A.R.C.H. — which stands for Musicians Acting with Responsibility, Compassion and Hard work — is an effort to bridge the gap between school funding for the band and the actual operating costs for the program.

“The band program at Roswell High School, as well as other local high schools, is only partially funded by the county,” said Roswell High School Band Booster Association Co-President Michael Dal Cerro. “The lion’s share of the cost to operate the in-class band, marching band, competitions, color guard, indoor drum line, and any band trips falls to the parents and parentorganized booster associations. This fundraiser is designed to empower the students to take ownership of their band program as well as connect in their community through service.”

On Saturday, March 16, band and guard members will spend the day working in multiple locations across Fulton County to help collect donations and pledges toward their goal of $30,000. Each

Last year, the fundraiser’s inaugural

year, was the largest fundraiser in RHS band history, said Roswell High School Band Booster Association Co-President Mark Herring. Students contributed over 600 man hours across the Roswell community to help organizations like North Fulton Community Charities, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, the Old Roswell Cemetery and local senior centers.

Some of this year’s sites and projects will include working on an organic gar-

den at Crabapple Middle School, Vickery Creek clean up, Smith Plantation clean up, Fulton County Foster Care volunteering, city storm drain cleaning and Saturday school program participation at Mimosa Elementary School.

M.A.R.C.H. was inspired by a highschool ministry Herring used to work for in Barrington, Ill. “We would raise all the operational funds, apart from salaries, from a similar community service day,” Herring said. “It became a fun tradition that the kids looked forward to every year and it helped instill a love of community for those students.”

The one-day event is a departure from more traditional methods of fundraising, like selling cookies, candles or popcorn, the profits of which partially go to a separate company.

“We’ve found that people are much more generous and willing to donate monies if nearly all of it goes to the program and students,” Herring said. “Additionally, donors are equally motivated by the fact that it has an impact in the local community. It’s a win/win for everyone and it’s tax deductible.”

Vickery Rose Retirement Resort opens doors

On Feb. 28, Vickery Rose Retirement Resort held its grand opening with several city and community leaders in attendance.

Vickery Rose Retirement Resort is an all-inclusive 55 and older senior living community complete with several resort-style amenities. Construction on the project began early 2017 at 295 East Crossville Road in Roswell. The land was formerly owned by the Tolbert family.

“This is about community,” said Roswell Inc Executive Director Steve Stroud. “When we were approached, this property was owned by the Tolberts.

When they came to us and said they wanted to sell this property, they wanted to find a good use for it... We put all the pieces together, and now we’ve got a better community. Because we’ve got places for you all to live… and not only live here, but shop here, and participate in the City of Roswell.”

Stroud said the resort will be a catalyst for new job growth in Roswell and is expected to bring at least 30 jobs to locals.

Realtor stresses choice in price points ZKTeco to bring as Forsyth County continues to grow $5 million, 40 jobs

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County has a lot working in its favor in the real estate industry, according to Frank Norton, noted real estate expert in north Georgia.

Norton spoke at the CummingForsyth County Chamber of Commerce Commercial Real Estate Roundtable Feb. 28 at ServPro. He said the county’s demographics play a large role in the local housing market, and that leaders need to be aware of the importance of things such as affordable housing.

Norton said the estimated population of Forsyth County in 2018 was 227,967. He compared it to Johns Creek which has been an official city for more than a decade and had an estimated population in 2018 of 202,957.

“Your population growth is so strong, that it is eclipsing almost any other county in the state,” Norton said.

“A fairly sizeable wedge is coming out of Forsyth County and going to Johns Creek. Visualize what that will look like in 2040. In 2040, we are projecting Forsyth County to be somewhere in the 275,000-300,000 people.”

One challenge facing Forsyth is the lack of affordable housing for low income families and residents.

“The county has changed,” he said.

“We need housing. I have been preaching for 20 years that the key to a good, strong community is having multiple price points of housing. You have to have some low income, subsidized and

The average family, with average credit who want to buy the average house, will not live in Forsyth County, Norton said.

“You’re importing that labor to run the county,” he said. “That will get compounded more over the next five years than the last 20 years.”

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — ZKTeco, a global manufacturer of tag-tracking and biometric technology, will soon call Alpharetta home.

Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Economic Development announced Feb. 20 that the company is moving its U.S. headquarters from Fairfield, New Jersey to Fulton County. The move is expected to bring 40 new jobs and invest over $5 million in relocation and expansion.

The new jobs will consist of inside sales, technical support, research and development, light assembly, quality control and logistics personnel.

Braves’ moneyball is actually making money Retain customers Unlike the Oakland A’s version of moneyball, the Atlanta Braves are actually making money. And judging from their recently released 2018 earnings, they are making a ton of it.

Geoff smith Mark Meltzer reAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com ported in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that the Braves took in $442 million in revenue last year, up 14.5 percent from the $386 million they took in in 2017 — and up nearly 69 percent since their last season at Turner Field.

Liberty Media, the owner of the Braves, said the increase in revenues had largely to do with the Braves winning the National League East and earning some homefield playoff games.

That brought in revenue through more ticket-sales and increased profits from concessions.

But another profit source for the Braves has been the real estate it owns in the Battery. Due to increased occupancy rates in 2018, the team generated $38 million more in revenue from its real estate holdings.

While the 2018 numbers have not been released for all the other Major League Baseball teams, in 2017, the Braves ranked 8th in the league with its $336 million in revenue. The $442 million they made last year would have moved them up to 5th place on that list.

If you did not read Michael Lewis’ book “Moneyball,” it tells the story of how the A’s used an algorithm to hire players they determined would score runs. This resulted in them hiring and trading for less sought-after players, but winning more games. Coincidentally, the A’s ranked dead last in 2017 in revenue.

As fans, most of us are probably more concerned with what the Braves are doing to win another pennant and put the team in contention for the World Series. Well, if you base success off of payroll, the Braves current roster ranks 20th out of 30 teams in terms of money spent. Statistically speaking, they didn’t have any superstars last year. Freddie Freeman had the 7th highest batting average and Nick Markakis had the 6th most hits. As a team, they statistically were better than most, but not really in the front of the pack. They had the 5th highest batting average, but were 19th in home runs, 11th in on-base percentage, and perhaps the most important team hitting statistic, they were 10th in runs scored.

The pitchers did a little better. They had the 7th best earned run average, allowed the 3rd fewest home runs, and again, most importantly, allowed the 8th least amount of runs.

It’s hard to say that Liberty Media did a lot in the off-season to drastically improve the Braves. Although it does feel great to get Brian McCann. He always looked out of place in another team’s uniform. And they took a chance on 33-year old Josh Donaldson. He is a former American League MVP third basement, but has been plagued by injuries the last several years. It would have been nice to get a dominant pitcher, but the Braves are touting their young talent as potential gamechangers.

We have a team that will compete and we have a stadium and an atmosphere that makes going to a game an awesome experience. The Battery has grown so much and will continue to grow with an up and coming $200 million expansion. Getting to the game early and hitting the bars and restaurants is way more important than it was at Turner Field.

The only thing standing in the way of continued revenue growth could very well be the continuation of these record rainfalls. Otherwise, Let’s Go Braves!

through managing their expectations Are you meeting the expectations that your customers have with your small business, and the products and services you provide? How are you managing the expectations of your customers to ensure dick jones you can either meet or Founder & President Jones Simply Sales exceed their expectations? The best way to retain customers is to meet their expectations, and managing their expectations is a key component to meeting them.

So how do you manage the expectations of your customers? For starters, make promises that you can deliver on.

If you tell a customer you’ll get back to them within an hour of receiving a voicemail from them, that’s most likely something you won’t consistently be able to do. Conveying a more realistic time (like 24 hours) not only sets the expectation with your customers that they can count on getting a call back in a day, it’s also achievable.

Over-promising and under-delivering leads to customer complaints, dissatisfaction, and potentially losing a customer. There are two easy solutions. Number 1, don’t make promises that you can’t deliver; and number 2, if your customer expects something you know you can’t deliver, manage their expectations.

You can spend a lot of time, effort and money trying to consistently meet the expectations your customers have.

Managing customer expectations will also improve customer satisfaction. Happy customers will do more business with you, and are also more likely to recommend your business to others; both of which will help you grow your small business.

Smart Storage. Sometimes enlarging the kitchen isn’t possible, or sometimes as a component of expanding the kitchen, smart storage options is always a component of the remodel. Spice racks, Keurig inserts, roll-out drawers and hidden appliance options are all surprisingly common features of 2018 kitchens.

Lighting. More light sources create less shadows and more comfortable ambient lighting feel. Remodeling Expo Center emphasizes the use of clear light, LED technology which reflects off counters and backsplash and contributes to truly gorgeous kitchens.

The Total Kitchen. Bringing all of these elements together is what makes truly gorgeous kitchens and they don’t need to be ultra expensive; they just need to be well planned. The more time you spend on planning, the better the kitchen will turn out.

Six tips to help manage kids’ screen time limits (NAPSI) — If any of the nearly 51 million schoolchildren in America today is someone you care about, you may find this information on kids and the internet quite intriguing.

To help your young students make the most of the online world while staying safe, heed these hints: 1. Share Space: Have a shared family computer in a common space. This lets you supervise your kids’ online time without hovering.

2. Limit Time: The length of an online session should match your child’s natural attention span. School-age kids’ brains can focus for about 30 minutes at a time, so they won’t really get much from sessions longer than that. A good idea is to set a schedule of computer time with dinner acting as a halftime.

3. Increase Freedom: Gradually give your children freedom to decide how to use the internet as they grow into teenagers. They will probably push for more freedom, a natural part of preparing for adulthood. Trust your teens to make

good decisions and appropriately manage time online.

4. Turn To Technology: Everyone has preferred shows or spaces online and can watch anywhere via tablets and laptops. Instead of each family member staking out his or her own corner of the house, encourage everyone to gather in one room. This encourages you to share online activities and encourages conversation. When possible, seek out shows or online sites that appeal to all family members so at least some online activities become shared experiences and a focus of learning with and from each other.

5. Be In Control: Use the computer system’s parental controls to manage kids’ access online and prevent accidental exposure to content for which your children aren’t ready.

6. Let Tools Help Teens: Teenagers need to prioritize and manage their time, making sure that a healthy amount of sleep, an “unplugged” family meal, and academic and family obligations come first.

Cambridge girls soccer downs crosstown rivals Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge used strong defensive play and two goals in the first half to earn bragging rights over crosstown foes Milton March 1 at home.

The Bears used their experienced backline and impressive play in the midfield to stymie the injury-riddled Eagles and will head into region play next week with a 4-2 overall record.

“We came off a tough, 1-0 loss (to Sprayberry Feb. 26) where we kind of felt we deserved it,” head coach Jesse Bitting said. “We came into this game — which is a lot bigger considering we’re both Milton teams — wanting to turn it around, and we did that brilliantly.”

Before Cambridge had a chance to flex its defensive muscles, the Bears took an early lead.

Senior forward Hannah Behner sent a pass from the midfield between two defenders to connect with freshman Ella Ciardullo in the attacking third. With the ball approaching no-man’s land, Ciardullo lobbed a shot over the head of Milton keeper Alex Bicknell to give Cambridge a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.

“Ciardullo really keeps things moving and keeps up the momentum,” Bitting said.

Milton senior defender Bianca Norcom had an impressive tackle to clear a Cambridge scoring chance midway through the period, but the Bears found the net five minutes later off a set piece.

Bears’ junior midfielder Molly Booker took a Cambridge corner and bent the ball toward the near post where it deflected off a defender and into the back of the net with 15 minutes left in the first half.

Though Milton had its scoring opportunities in the second half, including a free kick from just outside the corner of the penalty area, they could not find the net and were held to a single shot on goal

by Cambridge’s stout defensive play.

The Bears now turn their attention to region play which begins this week.

Cambridge will look to improve on its 1-7 region record last season, and Bitting said the Bears are confident heading into the 7-AAAAAA slate after downing their rivals.

“We feel good about region play going into it this way,” she said. “I told them tonight to think of this game as a region game, because it kind of is, but it’s also street cred and I think they feel that for sure.”

Bitting said the team’s attitude will be a vital factor in moving forward.

Cambridge boys soccer charges back to down Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge assistant coach Josh McGlamery typically spends the halftime of each game with magnets and a board outlining the strategy for the Bears in the second half. In Friday night’s contest against Milton, his board and magnets did not make an appearance during the break.

“We didn’t need that tonight,” McGlamery said. “We needed desire and intensity.”

McGlamery and Bears’ head coach Bryan Wallace emphasized the need for their squad to rise to its challenges, show their passion and play with a ferocity they did not have in the first half.

That halftime refocus paid off with the Bears using a notable second half performance to erase Milton’s lead and earn a 2-1 victory.

Milton and Cambridge split possession time in the first half, but the Eagles took advantage of a quick transition to take a 1-0 lead midway through the frame. Though the Bears’ strong-suit is not usually set pieces, Wallace said the team focused on them earlier in the week, and it paid off Friday night.

“Our strength is possession and creativity, but we can figure some things out with the athletes we have,” Wallace said. “I think they did a good job of translating what we worked on into some goals.”

The Bears continued to mount offensive pressure the remainder of the half, and though they did not add another goal, possession-oriented play, along with some late Milton turnovers, allowed Cambridge to secure the comeback win.

“We have confidence in our ability to play, I think tonight brings further confidence in our ability to gut it out sometimes,” McGlamery said.

You also are required to present a valid Georgia photo identification and provide a current copy of your Fulton County vehicle registration.
