Lemonade Days marks 23rd year
Music, food and games highlight Dunwoody gala
By ALEXANDER POPP alex@appenmedia.comDUNWOODY, Ga. — Lemonade Days returned to Dunwoody for the 23rd year, offering food, rides, entertainment, and yes, ice-cold lemonade to thousands of participants from throughout the area.
Held from April 19 to 23 at Brook Run Park and hosted by the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, this year’s festival was one of the best yet, officials said, with perfect
weather, staggering attendance levels, and plenty of fun for the entire community.
“I just love the families, the strollers, the diversity, the old and the young, everything,” Post 4 Dunwoody Councilwoman Stacey Harris said from a booth on the festival midway April 22. “You put it on the calendar. It's a tradition.”
Launched in the wake of a tornado that ripped through Dunwoody in 1998, the five-day Lemonade Days festival now funds all the work

Two injured in Dunwoody apartment shooting
By ALEXANDER POPP alex@appenmedia.comDUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody police said two men were rushed to the hospital Friday, April 21, after a shooting at a local apartment complex.
One man was shot in the abdomen multiple times and another was shot in the ankle during an incident at the
apartment complex on Madison Drive, Sgt. Michael Cheek of the Dunwoody Police Department said.
The shooting allegedly occurred after an altercation between two friends. At this point, police believe one of the men forced his friend into an apartment at gunpoint, where both men exchanged gunfire.
Cheek said the men ran out of the
Police recover shotgun shells at Sandy Springs intersection
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — If you, or someone you know, misplaced a large amount of shotgun ammunition while driving through the Perimeter area recently, check the Sandy Springs Police Department’s lost and found.
Police say a “large amount” of 28 gauge shotgun shells were recovered after falling from the back of a vehicle onto the roadway at Hammond Drive and Peachtree Dunwoody Road April 19.
In a Facebook post, officials said they received multiple 911 calls from passing motorists about the spilled ammunition and officers responded quickly to clear the roadway.
From traffic cameras, police determined that the shotgun shells fell out of the back of an SUV, which was driving with its lift gate left open. The vehicle’s owner was later identified and notified that the munitions are ready for pickup from Sandy Springs Police Department custody.

Police conducted a search on the apartment complex where the shooting occurred, and seized multiple guns, and a “substantial” amount of drugs and cash.
Warrants are pending for both individuals involved in the shooting, Cheek said.

Dunwoody Municipal Court offers May amnesty program
DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody Municipal Court will offer amnesty to individuals for certain alleged violations in an effort to settle outstanding court cases and reduce local arrests.
The Dunwoody Municipal Court amnesty program will be held throughout May, giving residents a chance to clear their names and get rid of active warrants for certain offenses by paying fines and court fees.
“During Amnesty Month last year, we disposed of more than 50 failure-to-appear and warrant status cases,” Dunwoody Municipal Court Clerk Norlaundra Huntington said. “Some people may think this is a trick, but it’s not. Our only goal is to encourage people to come back to court by
easing their financial burden.”
Past-due traffic citations and active bench warrants for failure to appear in court will be forgiven if individuals pay their fines in full and set future court dates to appear before a judge when required, officials said.
Cash, money order, cashier checks and credit cards will be accepted to pay fines.
Those interested in taking advantage of the program can visit the Dunwoody Municipal Court located at 4800 Ashford Dunwoody Road Monday, Tuesday or Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
For more information about this program, contact the Dunwoody Municipal Court at 678-382-6973.
Dunwoody High School turns 50
Community, alumni turn out to mark milestone
By ALEXANDER POPP alex@appenmedia.comDUNWOODY, Ga. — Students, families and alumni gathered at Dunwoody High School Saturday, April 15, to celebrate 50 years of education in the community. This major milestone for the high school was marked by educators and local residents with a day-long party, featuring music, food trucks, school tours, exhibi-
tions and an alumni flag football game.
Dunwoody High School opened on Vermack Road in 1972 with 900 students and has since grown to include many new state-of-the-art programs for the nearly 2,100 students it serves today.
Officials said proceeds raised during the celebration will help fund multiple projects at the school, including the construction of new football stadium bleachers.
Dunwoody High School alumni and former teachers visit their old classrooms, catch up, and reminisce about glory days April 15 during the school’s 50th anniversary celebration.
SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH
DeKalb County school librarian pushes for more staff
Board extends contract for interim superintendent
By AMBER PERRY amber@appenmedia.comDEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Miriam Martin, Lakeside High School media specialist, says she performs an essential piece to a child’s learning behavior.
“We teach the joy of reading. Reading is essential to learning,” Martin said. “If you cannot read you cannot think and reflect. Being able to read makes every dream possible.”
But while the media center at her school on Briarcliff Road is well-stocked with resources, Martin said staffing isn’t adequate, a residual effect of the 2008 economic turndown. She manages a $25,000 budget.
“The school district decimated the media center staffing — 15 years later, our staffing has not fully recovered,” said Martin, standing before the DeKalb County School Board at its April 17 meeting.
April is School Library Month. To celebrate, DeKalb School Board member Whitney McGinnis delivered a proclama-
tion that included Lakeside High School’s win in a state competition for reading.
Lakeside’s media center, which serves 2,200 students, is staffed at the same level as an elementary school with 450 students, Martin said. Last year, she said its media center had more than 10,000 student visits. This year, she said the media center has already gone over 16,000.
Lakeside High School currently has one media specialist, Martin, and one library media assistant.
“Why is staffing not predicated on enrollment?” Martin asked.
Martin shared her concern about sending students to college without knowledge and skills of the research process. The school district no longer requires students to read a certain number of books, she said, nor does it require a research paper, even in Advanced Placement classes.
“The district talks about rigor. Where is the rigor? Show me the rigor,” Martin said. “We need a well-staffed media center to teach reading and research skills for our students.”
Martin voiced a wealth of resources at Lakeside High School. But a student at Columbia Middle School said she didn’t
have access to the material she needed to complete a project relating to studying notable individuals of color.
She expressed her hope to see more diversity in textbooks and in classes she takes next year when she moves onto high school and requested a requirement for African American studies as well as Native American and Asian courses.
“African Americans and other people of color have contributed to building our country,” the student said. “We want to learn more about what they have done to make our world better.”
Following the community input portion of the School Board meeting, members extended the contract for Interim Superintendent Vasanne Tinsley to June 30. The one-year contract was set to end April 25.
After a year-long search for a new superintendent, Devon Horton was selected as the sole finalist for the position. Horton is superintendent for the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 in Illinois, a 7,894-student district. DeKalb County Schools has 102,000 students.
The board was expected to meet April 19 to decide whether to hire Horton officially. His proposed start date would come sometime after June 30.

Cultural Development manager said. “This is a great way to celebrate Dunwoody’s diversity. We’re excited to bring this celebration to the outdoor lawn at Ashford Lane, which is a beautiful new community gathering place.”
Performers will include Atlanta Chinese Dance Company, FASCA Yo-Yo and Lion Dance, Korean Dance Academy, Shaolin Institute, Jathiswara School of Dance and Music, Vietnamese TaiChi 132 Forms and many others.
The event will also feature a demonstration of Japanese floral arrangements and information tables on Thailand, China, Laos, Japan, Taiwan and India.
A full list of performances and more information on the celebration can be found by visiting dunwoodyga.gov and clicking on Arts and Culture and Cultural Heritage Events in the Government tab.

Reconnecting with your adult child: A guide to healing broken relationships
Brought to you by – Summit Counseling
Broken relationships between parents and their grown children are, sadly, very common. Whether actions were simply misunderstood, or serious emotional injury was inflicted, it’s a painful situation for everyone involved. While you may not be entirely responsible, initiating reconciliation may be up to you. Here are some points to keep in mind as you seek to reconnect:
• Remember your child is an adult. While you may feel that just yesterday they were children, they are grown and should be treated with the respect they deserve.
• Acknowledge your contribution. There are two sides to every story -
harmless actions in your eyes may have been seen as hurtful to your child. Try to understand their perspective and apologize for your part.
• Be fair. This doesn’t mean you accept all blame and overlook their wrongdoings, but criticizing everything you see wrong may do more harm than good - try to stick to the current issue.
• Get support. By reaching out to a friend or therapist, you can gain a neutral perspective that can help you be more objective and empathetic.
Navigating relationships with adult children can be tricky, but the reward of a healthy connection is worth it. Visit summitcounseling.org to view our services and see how we can help you in your journey!

Thank you for trusting Edison Prep with your student’s college prep needs!
The team at Edison Prep is honored to be named the Best Tutoring Center in Appen Media’s Best of Perimeter 2023 for the second year in a row! We thank the incredible communities of Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, and Brookhaven for continuing to choose our company for your test prep needs.
At Edison Prep, we work with students to help them achieve their goals in standardized testing and in college admissions. It is our honor to help 1,800+ students every year prepare for the SAT, ACT, PSAT, and AP History exams.
Brian and Silvia Eufinger co-
founded Edison Prep in 2010, offering 1-1 tutoring in students’ homes or local coffee shops. In 2011, Brian and Silvia published the first edition of Edison Prep’s SAT and ACT curriculum—comprehensive workbooks with the content, strategies, and practice materials to help students improve their scores— which they continue to revise each year. The company soon added AP History Bootcamps to the yearly rotation! And since then, we’ve expanded our offerings to include SAT and ACT group courses, accelerated bootcamps, and expanded private tutoring options—and much more!
Edison Prep prides itself on being a boutique tutoring agency with a small, experienced team led by the two founders, who still teach full-time in the trenches alongside the rest of the team (this is highly unusual in the test prep industry). The founders
teach all the SAT and ACT group classes, and then do private tutoring whenever they’re not teaching classes. They’ve trained a small team of tutors to assist with the private fine-tuning tutoring that many of the group class students do after taking the class. (85% of students either start off with, or only, do a group class.)
We are proud that our small team of experienced tutors has over 100,000 hours of experience; we pay at the top of the market to ensure quality and retain top tutors who live and breathe these tests, be it by taking the real exams each year, dissecting newly released tests hot off the presses, or talking shop to tighten up our curriculum and materials.
Edison Prep is frequently invited to speak about test prep and admissions at high schools, national conferences, and education podcasts. In 2020, the National Test Prep Association
elected Edison Prep co-founder Brian Eufinger as a board member.
We are fortunate to continue growing our offerings. In 2023, we expanded our office space, added team members, revised our books, and are hard at work building our new Digital SAT curriculum. We also celebrated our 20,000th student!
All services are available both inperson and virtually. While most of our students are in greater Atlanta, technology allows us to serve families around the world: We have worked with students in 30 states and five countries.
We’re happy to help students create timely test prep plans that address their unique needs. Students and families can access free test prep resources, including mock tests every weekend, parent information sessions, and more, at edisonprep. com.

Thank you for voting for Conway Law!
Brought to you by – Conway Law
Wow! This award is such an honor and Conway Law is truly humbled to be chosen by the community as one of the Best of the Perimeter.
In 2013, Attorney Chris Conway left a national insurance defense firm to start Conway Law. He desires to fight for justice for those injured by someone else’s negligence or recklessness. He fights for his clients by using what he learned defending insurance companies. He and his family love living in Dunwoody and being involved in the community whether with Chesnut Elementary, Dunwoody North Fins, Dan & Company, Rush Union, or Orbit Arts Academy.
Here is something practical to remember if you are ever in a car wreck: Conway Law’s Four (4) “C’s” for car wrecks:
(1) CALL the police. People lie and an insurance company will not believe you unless there is a police report documenting the wreck;
(2) COLLECT information. Take pictures of everything: your vehicle, the other vehicle, the locations of the vehicles after the wreck, the other driver’s tag and insurance information. A picture is worth a thousand words and often the car that hits you looks worse that your vehicle.
(3) CARE for yourself. Go and see a medical professional if you feel pain or stiffness, persistent headaches, numbness or tingling going down your arms or legs, or pain in any other area of your body. If you wait to see a doctor hoping that the pain will go away or suffer in silence, an insurance company will use that against you.
(4) CALL Conway Law. Insurance companies are in business to make money and try everything to diminish the value of your claim. You need someone with the knowledge and experience to fight for you.

Our recent client, Leah M., shares her thoughts: “The team at Valarda was respectful, timely and thorough. Each employee that came into our home showed kindness to my children and treated my home with respect. Valarda has an online calendar
that clearly lays out what crew will be at your house and what they will be doing… This was helpful for us to plan around the work and supplies needed that were scheduled for the day. The level of detail paid to each
aspect of the project was impressive. We appreciated the time they took to care for our home. We have nothing but high regards and recommendations for Valarda. We were very happy with the final product and the time-
line with which it was completed.”
To our community - It is an honor to be entrusted to help you build a home you love - It is our pleasure and privilege to continue to serve you... Thank you for this recognition!

Together we make this community a fabulous place to live and work
Brought to you by - Dr. Al Nordone, Dr. Hannah Oh and the Dentistry with a Difference Team
Thank you to the Dunwoody and greater Perimeter Community for voting us Best Dentist for the THIRD year in a row. We are truly proud and humbled to receive such a prestigious designation. For more than 30 years we have felt an obligation to be an active contributing member of this community. With your help we have held Teddy Bear Drives for the police department, sponsored the restoration of the Spruill Farm House, given college scholarships for graduating high school seniors and sponsored the Dunwoody Woman’s Home Tour to name just a few of our projects. All were made possible with your tremendous support. Together we will continue to make this community a fabulous place to live and work.
Providing comprehensive cancer care since 1987
Brought to you by – Piedmont Cancer Institute
Learning that you have cancer is traumatic. Feelings of anxiety, fear and stress may overwhelm you. So many questions. Cancer is a complex disease which needs a comprehensive approach to care. Not all cancers are the same therefore not all care is the same. Searching and finding the best team to treat YOUR cancer is key. At Piedmont Cancer Institute, you will find that individualized, comprehensive cancer care is what we do.
In 1987, Piedmont Cancer Institute began providing care for those diagnosed with cancer. Since that time, PCI has expanded its care to five cities in the Atlanta metro area. We have continued to operate as a private practice allowing our team to build meaningful patient relationships which means you get the individualized care you need. From the beginning, our number one goal has been to provide the best possible care in all aspects of treatment - Clinical, Mind, Body, and Spirit. The physicians treat all types of cancer and hematological diseases. Our physicians and advanced practitioners work closely with your entire treatment team of specialists, primary care physicians, family, and caregivers to address your individualized cancer treatment plan. We integrate leading-edge therapies, the latest clinical trials, and cancer wellness programs for the best care possible.
We also offer convenient telehealth appointments, treatment education appointments and social worker appointments - all easily scheduled through our website.
If you need a partner in care, PCI is here.

THANK YOU!
Brought to you by – Village Animal Hospital
The team at Village Animal Hospital would like to take a moment to thank our wonderful clients and support staff for voting for us to be 2023 Best of Perimeter. We have only been open for one year and as a new practice it truly “takes a village”. As a privately owned practice we strive to treat each client and patient as an individual. We pride ourselves on a good quality of medicine that is not always one size fits all. It is important to us to educate and
support the Dunwoody community on how best to care for their pets in sickness and in health. With our newly renovated office in the works, we are here to stay. Be on the lookout for our grand opening party in the fall of 2023. We are accepting new clients and would love to add your pets to our growing family. Stop by our booth at the Dunwoody Arts Festival and meet our doctors; Dr. Riva Wolkow, Dr. Ashlyn Roberts and Dr. Melanie Lucero. We look forward to continuing to provide outstanding service to our clients and superior veterinary care to our patients.
Building real relationships with our community
Brought to you by – Kaplan Orthodontics
Thank you to our families, friends, patients, dental colleagues, and the community for your votes and support! We are humbled and excited to be Best of Perimeter’s #1 Orthodontist ! For over 16 years, we have strived to not only create beautiful smiles, but also to build real relationships with our patients and community. We are so thankful that all of you in the Dunwoody and surrounding communities have continued to put your trust in us as your orthodontist. Watching our patients’ smiles and confidence transform is the best part of our days! This is a wonderful community, and we are thankful to be a part of it. We are happy to support and volunteer at local schools, swim teams, and community events. Getting to see our patients and dental colleagues outside of the office is a great pleasure. While we understand that Dr. Kaplan’s 20 years of orthodontic expertise, the fact that he is the #1 Invisalign provider in Dunwoody for adults and teens, and our office’s flexible financing options and appointment times may be what initially brings patients through our doors; it makes us smile to know the reason patients choose us as their orthodontist, and then refer their family and friends, is because they have become part of our Kaplan Orthodontics family. They have joked with Dr Kaplan, gotten his advice for family Disney vacations, and cheered along the Kansas Jayhawks! We know it is these relationships, built over almost 20 years, which
have brought us the votes needed to be the #1 Orthodontist in Best of Perimeter. We are honored by this award and so thankful to all of you and this

To our loyal patients and community
Broughtto
you by – Dunwoody Urgent CareWe can't even begin to tell you how much it means to our dedicated staff at Dunwoody Urgent Care that you have voted us the "Best Urgent Care" in the entire Perimeter area for the third year in a row!
For nearly 20 years, we have had the honor and privilege of caring for over 25,000 patients in our community. We had humble beginnings, hoping to fill a void in the medical care offered locally, and our
goal has always been to provide the best care possible to our patients. We live and work in this great city, and we aspire to provide outstanding healthcare for all patients, day after day.
We hope that you remain healthy and injury free, but should you need us, we look forward to caring for you in our newly renovated office, including a state-of-the-art, digital x-ray suite. We are located at 1730 B Mt Vernon Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338. Thank you for putting your trust in us!
Home Helpers of North Atlanta Voted Best of Perimeter Home Care for the 3rd time!
Brought to you by – Home Helpers of Alpharetta and North Atlanta
Home Helpers of Alpharetta and North Atlanta suburbs has won the Best of Perimeter Home Care for Seniors for the third consecutive year. Our deepest thanks go out to our supporters!
“Over the past years we’ve found that being able to recognize the unique needs of our clients and their families has made a true difference in the kind of care we deliver “ say Hilary and Greg Eldridge. “ Using our knowledge and experience to create a truly personalized approach also lets us respond quickly to their ever changing needs. We understand the importance of being able to age in place wherever you call home, whether it’s in a private house, assisted living community, apartment setting or
even receiving additional assistance in a health facility as you recuperate.”
Just one example of listening to our clients and creating a new approach can be found with our live-in care alternatives. A heart-centered, well matched and skilled Home Helpers Caregiver lives in your loved one’s home and can provide daytime support care, ideal for challenges like decreased mobility, increased fall dangers and conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. They’re also available for occasional nighttime assistance or for emergencies. It answers the concerns so many families have about too many people and schedules to manage. But a caregiver needs five hours of uninterrupted sleep and eight hours total sleep, so if care is needed through the night this option was unavailable – usually
making a team of caregivers and more expensive hourly fees the norm. We take a different approach and can also provide a nighttime caregiver who provides supplemental assistance, allows your primary caregiver to get the rest they need, and is still more economical than an hourly team. It also creates a safe, calming environment with no shift changes during the day.
For the past six years we have also been voted the Best Home Care for Seniors in North Atlanta, as we continue in our commitment to discover what we can do to move your best quality of life forward. Our clients appreciate the professionalism and dedication of our wonderful team and caregivers, who face each day with the goal of making each day the best it can be. A Home Helpers caregiver has the skills to assist
with all personal care, help around the house, safely speed up recovery from surgery, or provide specialized care for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc.
Hilary and Greg built this business as a tribute to Hilary’s father and set out eleven years ago to raise the bar for in-home care. “I saw what a difference truly personalized care made for my Dad and strive to provide the kind of care he’d be proud to have inspired”, says Hilary. “I always use his memory as a touchstone to make sure that even in the midst of change we engage the spirit of our clients as we honor the richness of their lives.”
We’re here to help - from six hours a day, several days a week to 24/7 and live-in care. For a free consultation please call Home Helpers of Alpharetta and North Atlanta at (770) 681-0323.

Treating your pets like valued family members
Brought to you by – Dunwoody Animal Medical Center
Dunwoody Animal Medical Center is honored to be voted this year’s winner of Best Veterinarian for the third year in a row! This honor means even more since we have been voted Best Veterinarian in what may have been the 3 most diffi cult years that we have operated as a veterinary hospital. COVID brought challenges to veterinary medicine that continue to this day. Staffing and supply chain issues are only two of the challenges we face as we strive to provide excellent patient and client care to our growing community.
Corporate consolidation of independent veterinary hospitals has been a
huge issue for several years. We are the oldest independently owned veterinary hospital in Dunwoody and are proud of our thirty-three years of service. We feel that remaining independent allows us the freedom and fl exibility to quickly adapt and change in order to best fulfi ll our mission: To take care of our clients by taking care of their pets. Whether we need to alter procedures, introduce new products, purchase new equipment, or switch suppliers in order to provide our best care, we are able to do so quickly and seamlessly without outside restrictions or approvals. Admittedly, it does at times feel like George Bailey living in the world of Mr. Potters, but we feel that remaining independent will give the community
options for veterinary care.
Dunwoody Animal Medical Center was founded in 1990 with the idea of becoming a member of and contributor to the Dunwoody community. Instead of Yellow Page ads (please Google that if you under a certain age!) we chose to use those dollars for support of local schools, community events, and local charities. We are still committed to that philosophy of giving back to our community and wish to remain a personal practice where we know our clients and their pets.
As we have grown, we have added to our veterinary provider staff. While this allows us to better serve our clients and patients, we do not wish to become a hospital where clients feel they can
never see the same doctor. Even as we grow and continue to add staff, we will work hard to make sure that you can have your doctor choice preferences fulfilled as often as possible. We want our clients to always feel free to request the doctor of their choice.
Today, Dunwoody Animal Medical Center would like to thank the community for the support YOU have given us! It is an honor to serve and support the residents of Dunwoody. As the founder of the hospital, I would also like to thank all the wonderful employees who have tirelessly worked to help provide the superior care that we strive to give. We look forward to continuing our relationship with our community and your wonderful pets!

Morrison Farms on Osborne Road in Brookhaven
Morrison Farms, a nursery business which began in 1970, once operated at 3086 Osborne Road in Brookhaven. Today, 3086, 3068 and 3064 Osborne Road are on the market and under contract, according to advertising. The three addresses total 7.1 acres.
William Morrison was born on a farm in Utica, Mississippi, in 1920. Growing up on a farm, raising vegetables and flowers was part of everyday life, and he put that knowledge to use later in life.
Morrison first entered the military in 1942 in Biloxi, Mississippi. When selected for aviation school he was sent to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and from there went to Walla Walla, Washington, to continue training to fly B-24 bombers.
In Walla Walla, Morrison met Mary Elaine Kolberg. When he was transferred again, this time to Langley Air Force Base in Virginia in 1944, he asked Mary to move there so they could get married.
Morrison participated in the Berlin Airlift after World War II. He attended the
Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, and served 25 years in the military, both in the U.S. and overseas. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1966. Four years later, he opened Morrison Farms in Brookhaven, which he continued to operate until 2006. Mary Elaine worked along with
him as bookkeeper for the business.
When The Atlanta Constitution recommended six metro Atlanta nurseries to visit for an enjoyable weekend outing, they included Morrison Farms. The 1991 article advises, “You might miss it because the sign was small with red letters and pointed the way.” Morrison Farms was the only nursery on the list located inside I-285. (The Atlanta Constitution, May 12, 1991, “A weekend escape: Hop in the car and find these 6 nurseries”)
Morrison Farms had 40,000 square feet of greenhouse space and offered vegetables, annuals, perennials, herbs, houseplants, hanging baskets and clay pots. It was described as a farm with shade trees and level terrain, making it a fun place to walk around and explore.
In 1994, suggestions of Morrison as Father Christmas or Colonel Christmas are made. Poinsettias, which are native to Mexico, became the popular plant at the farm.
“William Morrison doesn’t live at the North Pole. But a visit to his Morrison Farms in northeast Atlanta, near Oglethorpe University, will almost make you believe this engagingly energetic 74-year-old nursery owner is the real
thing.” (The Atlanta Constitution, Dec. 23, 1994, “Colonel Christmas: Nurseryman’s knack begets a wonderland of poinsettias”)
The farm’s October 1996 newspaper advertisement announced, “Poinsettias are growing.”
In November of 2000, the nursery was featured in an article about poinsettias. The greenhouses were filled with various varieties of poinsettias and other holiday flowers. Colors included the Freedom variety featuring red, white, and pink, Monet poinsettia with speckled red and cream color flowers, and the Red Velvet variety. (Atlanta Constitution, Nov. 23, 2000, “Welcome holidays with poinsettias from Morrison Farms”) Morrison Farms also advertised their poinsettias and other plant offerings on a regular basis in the Dunwoody Crier newspaper. I don’t remember ever visiting there, but if you have memories to share of Morrison Farms, please send me an e-mail.

Spruill Center kicks off $2.7 million expansion
By ALEXANDER POPP alex@appenmedia.comDUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody has broken ground on a $2.7 million expansion at the Spruill Center for the Arts, adding new classrooms, studio space and capacity to the facility.
Local officials kicked off the project at a ceremony held at the arts center on Chamblee Dunwoody Road April 3.
“This day is a long time coming, Spruill has been in existence for 48 years now, we started in a church basement at Dunwoody Methodist,” Spruill Center CEO Alan Mothner said. “And in those 48 years, we have grown a lot … So today marks the beginning of a new era.”
The Spruill Center expansion project will add seven studio spaces, which Mothner said are especially needed due to the surge in popularity the center has experienced over the past three years.
Previously, Mothner told the Dunwoody City Council that 2022 was the center’s “best year ever” after it held more than 700 classes for nearly 6,000 students and hosted thousands of visitors and participants at special
events during the year. The city has pledged $1 million from its general fund to match the Spruill Center’s own contribution to the project.
“The Spruill Center for Arts is an integral part of service delivery in Dunwoody to our residents. Without a strong partner we would not have the many art courses and art camps available for residents in our community,” Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch said at the groundbreaking. “Not only do you serve people from Dunwoody, but we also attract people into our community who then invest, as well.”
In addition to the seven new classrooms, Mothner said plans call for a community room in the center’s main courtyard, which will allow them to “activate” the space and open up the opportunity to hold large classes and lectures.
“This is a beautiful courtyard space and we’re looking forward to having this open to the community as we celebrate the arts and continue to grow arts and culture here in our city,” he said.

done in the community by the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, from preserving historic properties and holding historical events to championing the causes that make Dunwoody great today.
“The mission of the Dunwoody Preservation Trust is to preserve the past, celebrate the present and build for the future,” said Hope Follmer, Dunwoody Preservation Trust director of community events.
From humble beginnings as a small festival at the historic CheekSpruill Farmhouse, Follmer said the gala has grown into one of Dunwoody’s premier spring celebrations, sprawling throughout Brook Run Park and drawing thousands each day.
Unlike most other festivals and fairs, Lemonade Days is mostly hidden from a wider regional view in the shady and secluded neighborhood park, but two decades of word of mouth and great press have made it a favorite in the community.
“We shouldn’t be as successful as
we are,” Follmer said. “But we're successful because the citizens in Dunwoody support us.”
To pull off the festival, Follmer said the Dunwoody Preservation Trust relies on nearly 150 volunteers and partnerships with the City of Dunwoody, the Dunwoody Police Department, Peachtree Middle School, and other local businesses and nonprofits.
“We're also successful because it's a partnership on so many levels,” she said.
City officials like Harris and fellow City Councilman Joe Seconder said partnering for the yearly celebration makes sense because time and time again people come to Dunwoody for quality of life, and events like Lemonade Days only reinforce the idea.
Seconder said a recent city community survey showed that new residents resoundingly love and support Dunwoody’s fun events and park spaces.
“They just expect to see a lovely place like Brook Run Park and all these great amenities,” he said.
Throughout the weekend, festivalgoers enjoyed clear blue skies and temperate weather, which doesn’t al -
ways happen, Follmer said, recounting years when the festival was threatened by dangerous storms.
This year, the weather couldn’t have been better, she said.
“It's all about the weather,” she said. “Like we could do everything, but if the weather doesn't cooperate, it’s all for nothing.”
The Dunwoody Preservation Trust maintains several historic properties including the Cheek-Spruill House, the Donaldson-Bannister Farm, and three historic cemeteries in the city. In the fall, it hosts Apple Cider Days, a celebration of pioneer history at the Donaldson-Bannister Farm.
But all of these efforts would be out of reach without Dunwoody residents’ support at Lemonade Days, Dunwoody Preservation Trust Executive Director Noelle Ross said.
“This keeps our organization going and able to run our programming and do our preservation efforts,” Ross said.
Funds from this year’s Lemonade Days will go toward opening a history museum in the city. More details about the project will be announced soon, she said.
